The range of lubricant applications has broadened to include multiple sectors, aiming to optimize the operational efficiency of mechanical systems. Given their adaptable friction-reducing properties, lubricants have recently been incorporated into energy harvesting technologies such as triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). In such devices, lubricants are essential for mitigating wear, facilitating heat dissipation, eliminating contaminants, and prolonging the service life of mechanically actuated energy harvesters. Notably, emerging developments in sliding and rotational-mode TENGs leverage lubricants to improve electrical output while reducing interface degradation. However, despite significant potential, TENGs still face inherent challenges, including interface friction and energy losses from air breakdown. Recent research indicates that these drawbacks can be effectively addressed by the intentional use of polymer-based lubricants, which contribute to maintaining micro/nanostructured surfaces and minimizing air breakdown, thereby enhancing charge storage capability and increasing device robustness. This review systematically examines the categories, physicochemical attributes, and operational roles of polymeric lubricants used in TENG technology. It underscores their combined function is both primary and support materials to augment triboelectric efficiency. In addition, the article assesses how different lubricants impact device performance and durability, providing a critical analysis of their suitability based on the operational benchmarks of lubricant-embedded TENG configurations. Self-oscillating systems are capable of transforming ambient energy directly into mechanical output, and exploring novel designs is of great value for energy harvesters, actuators, and engine applications. The inspiration for this study is drawn from the four-stroke engine; we designed a new self-rotating engine formed by a turnplate, a hinge, and an LCE fiber, operating with steady illumination applied. To analyze its rotation dynamics, a nonlinear theoretical framework was formulated constructed with the dynamic LCE model as a framework. The central discovery is that the light-driven LCE engine can operate in three distinct states under steady illumination—static equilibrium, pendulum-like oscillation and sustained self-rotation—switching between them through a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The persistence of both the pendulum and rotary motions stems from an energy balance in which the positive work produced by photo-induced contraction of the LCE fiber is exactly offset by damping dissipation, while oscillation amplitude and rotation frequency are strongly governed by light intensity, contraction coefficient, damping coefficient, spring constant and turntable radius. Compared with many previously reported self-oscillating designs, the present self-rotating engine is distinctive for its lightweight and simple configuration, tunable size, and rapid operation. These features enable compact integration and broaden its potential applications in micro-scale systems and devices. The advancement in artificial muscles, medical instruments and micro sensors is strongly promoted by this, making it possible to create devices that are both smaller in size and superior in functionality. Background: Stapes prostheses represent one of the earliest and most widely applied “biomedical actuators” designed to restore hearing in patients with otosclerosis. Unlike conventional actuators, which convert energy into motion, stapes prostheses function as passive or smart micro-actuators, transmitting and modulating acoustic energy through the ossicular chain. Objective: This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of stapes prostheses from an engineering and biomedical perspective, emphasizing design principles, materials science, and recent innovations in smart actuators based on shape-memory alloys combined with surgical applicability. Methods: A narrative review of the evolution of stapes prostheses was consolidated by institutional surgical experience. Comparative evaluation focused on materials (Teflon, Fluoroplastic, Titanium, Nitinol) and design solutions (manual crimping, clip-on, heat-activated prostheses). Special attention was given to endoscopic stapes surgery, which highlights the ergonomic and functional requirements of new device designs. Results: Traditional fluoroplastic and titanium pistons provide reliable sound conduction but require manual crimping, with a higher risk of incus necrosis and displacement. Innovative prostheses, particularly those manufactured from nitinol, act as self-crimping actuators activated by heat, improving coupling precision and reducing surgical trauma. Emerging designs, including bucket-handle and malleus pistons, expand applicability to complex or revision cases. Advances in additive manufacturing and middle ear cement fixation offer opportunities for customized, patient-specific actuators. Conclusions: Stapes prostheses have evolved from simple passive pistons to innovative biomedical actuators exploiting shape-memory and biocompatible materials. Future developments in stapes prosthesis design are closely linked to 3D printing technologies. These developments have the potential to enhance acoustic performance, durability, and patient outcomes, thereby bridging the gap between otologic surgery and biomedical engineering. Full article

This study presents the design, control, and flight experiments of a motor-directly-driven flapping-wing micro air vehicle with extension springs (MDD-FWMAVES). The flapping wing actuation utilizes the resonance of a linear extension spring and a flapping wing. The analysis results of the proposed MDD-FWMAVES revealed a resonant frequency of 19.59 Hz for the flapping-wing mechanism, and actual flapping experiments confirmed this to be 20 Hz. Using a six-axis load cell, we demonstrated the ability to generate roll, pitch, and yaw moments for attitude control based on wing flapping variations. All roll, pitch, and yaw moments were linearly proportional to the wing flapping variations. MEMS gyroscopes and accelerometers were used to measure roll, pitch, and yaw angular velocities and the gravity. A complementary filter was applied to these measurements to obtain the roll and pitch angles required for attitude control. A microprocessor, two motor drive circuits, one MEMS gyroscope/accelerometer, and one EEPROM for flight data storage were implemented on a single, ultra-compact electronic control board and mounted on the MDD-FWMAVES. Simple roll and pitch PD controllers were implemented on this electronic control board, and the controlled flight feasibility of the MDD-FWMAVES was explored. Flight tests demonstrated stable hovering for approximately 6 s. While yaw control was not achieved, the onboard feedback control system demonstrated stable roll and pitch control. Therefore, the MDD-FWMAVES holds the potential to be developed into a high-performance flapping-wing micro air vehicle if its flight system and controller are improved. Full article

To address the altitude control requirements of high-altitude latex balloons, this paper proposes a novel lightweight electromagnetically actuated valve design. The valve employs a permanent magnet–electromagnet–spring composite structure to achieve rapid opening/closing motions through electromagnetic force control, enabling precise regulation of balloon gas venting. 3D electromagnetic field simulations were conducted to validate the magnetic flux density distribution, while computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations were employed to evaluate the valve’s aerodynamic characteristics. The CFD results confirmed stable venting performance, with near-linear flow–pressure relationships and localized jet structures that support reliable operation under stratospheric conditions. A multidisciplinary optimization framework was further applied to achieve a lightweight structural design of critical components. Experimental results demonstrate that the optimized valve achieves a total mass of 984.69 g with an actuation force of 15.263 N, maintaining stable performance across a temperature range of −60 °C to 25 °C. This study provides an innovative and systematically validated solution for micro-valve design in lighter-than-air vehicles. Full article

Electromagnetic micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) micromirrors are widely used in optical scanning systems but often encounter mechanical crosstalk due to the use of shared drive coils. This phenomenon leads to parasitic motion along the slow axis during fast-axis operation, resulting in undesirable elliptical scanning patterns that degrade image quality. To tackle this issue, a hybrid actuation scheme is proposed in which a piezoelectric actuator drives the fast axis through an S-shaped spring structure, achieving a resonance frequency of 792 Hz, while the slow axis is independently driven by an electromagnetic actuator operating in quasi-static mode. Finite element simulations and experimental measurements validate that the proposed decoupled design significantly suppresses mechanical crosstalk. When the fast axis is driven to a 40° optical scan angle, the hybrid system reduces the parasitic slow-axis deflection (typically around 1.43°) to a negligible level, thereby producing a clean single-line scan. The piezoelectric fast axis exhibits a quality factor of Q = 110, while the electromagnetic slow axis achieves a linear 20° deflection at 20 Hz. This hybrid design facilitates a distortion-free field of view measuring 40° × 20° with uniform line spacing, presenting a straightforward and effective solution for high-precision scanning applications such as LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and structured light projection. This work provides the first demonstration of FFTCCV as a dual-purpose method, serving both as a real-time diagnostic tool and as a phase- and morphology-engineering strategy. By adjusting the scan rate, FFTCCV directs the crystallographic evolution of Ni (OH)2 on Ni foam—stabilizing α-nanoflakes at 0.7 V·s−1 and β-platelets at 0.007 V·s−1—while simultaneously enabling electrode-resolved ΔQ tracking and predictive state-of-health (SoH) monitoring. This approach enabled the precise regulation of electrode morphology and phase composition, yielding high areal capacitance (546.5 mF·cm−2 at 5 mA·cm−2) with ~75% retention after 3000 cycles. These improvements advance the development of high-performance micro-supercapacitors, facilitating their integration into wearable and miniaturized devices where compact and durable energy storage is required. Beyond performance enhancement, FFTCCV also enabled continuous monitoring of capacitance during extended operation (up to 40,000 s). By recording both anodic and cathodic responses, the method provided time-resolved insights into device stability and revealed characteristic signatures of electrode degradation, phase transitions, and morphological changes. Such detection allows recognition of early failure pathways that are not accessible through conventional testing. This monitoring capability functions as an embedded health sensor, offering a pathway for predictive diagnosis of supercapacitor failure. Such functionality is particularly important for energy-driven actuators and smart materials, where uninterrupted operation and preventive maintenance are critical. FFTCCV therefore provides a scalable strategy for developing energy-autonomous microsystems with improved performance and real-time state-of-health monitoring. Full article

The art of folding paper, named “origami”, has transformed from serving religious and cultural purposes to various educational and entertainment purposes in the modern world. Significantly, the fundamental folds and creases in origami, which enable the creation of 3D structures from a simple flat sheet with unique crease patterns, serve as a great inspiration in engineering applications such as deployable mechanisms for space exploration, self-folding structures for exoskeletons and surgical procedures, micro-grippers, energy absorption, and programmable robotic morphologies. Therefore, this paper will provide a systematic review of the state-of-the-art origami-inspired structures that have been adopted and exploited in robotics design and operation, called origami-inspired robots (OIRs). The advantages of the flexibility and adaptability of these folding mechanisms enable robots to achieve agile mobility and shape-shifting capabilities that are suited to diverse tasks. Furthermore, the inherent compliance structure, meaning that stiffness can be tuned from rigid to soft with different folding states, allows these robots to perform versatile functions, ranging from soft interactions to robust manipulation and a high-DOF system. In addition, the potential to simplify the fabrication and assembly processes, together with its integration into a wide range of actuation systems, further broadens its capabilities. However, these mechanisms increase the complexity in theoretical analysis and modelling, as well as posing a challenge in control algorithms when the robot’s DOF and reconfigurations are significantly increased. By leveraging the principles of folding and integrating actuation and design strategies, these robots can adapt their shapes, stiffness, and functionality to meet the demands of diverse tasks and environments, offering significant advantages over traditional rigid robots. Micro-accelerometers are in high demand across many due to their compact size, low energy consumption, and excellent precision. Since gravity causes a large movement when the device is positioned vertically, measuring low gravitational acceleration is challenging. This study examines the intrinsic relationship between applied voltage levels and displacement in micro-accelerometers. The study introduces a novel design that integrates hybrid flexures, comprising both linear and angular configurations, with an out-of-plane overlap varying (OPOV) electrostatic actuation mechanism. This design aims to measure the micro-accelerometer’s movement and low frequency response. The proposed device with silicon material is designed and simulated using the IntelliSuite® software, considering its small dimensions and 25 µm thickness. The norm value of 28.0916 μN from gravity’s reaction forces on the body, a resonant frequency of 179.668 Hz at the first desired mode, and a maximum stress of 24.7 MPa were obtained through the electro-mechanical analysis. A comparison of the proposed design was conducted with other configurations, measuring a frequency of 179.668 Hz at a minimum downward displacement of 7.69916 µm under the influence of gravity without electrostatic mechanisms. Following this, an electrostatic actuation mechanism was introduced to minimize displacement by applying different voltage levels, including 1 V, 1.5 V, and 3 V. At 3 V, a significant improvement in displacement reduction was observed compared to the other applied voltages. A gel scaffold for a biological canal is formed using a deformable soft microactuator mat. Three-dimensional cellular tissue structures are important for organ-on-a-chip in in-vitro biomimetic models. However, most traditional cellular tissues have been cultured in a dish or transwell. Furthermore, cellular culture on the inner wall of pre-manufactured channels has been recently reported. In this study, we propose a deformable actuator mat that can transform a flat structure into a tubular structure. The active mat, which is composed of pneumatic balloon actuator arrays, assembles a biological canal from a flat sheet of a gel scaffold for cell culture. The mat can return to its initial flat state so that the gel-based canal structure with cells can self-stand. A self-standing tubular gel structure is demonstrated as a biomimetic canal toward a biological canal with cells. A self-standing tubular gel structure has permeability, which is important for evaluation of pharmacokinetics. The actuator mat under the gel layers was curled into a tubular shape (approximately 1 mm diameter) and returned after the assembly. Culturing cellular tissues on a demonstrated gel structure will reproduce the biological permeability of organs such as an intestinal tract. This study confirms the gel-based canal formation process without cells as a feasibility study. The proposed technique has potential for the flexible design of biological three-dimensional structures, thereby contributing to pharmacokinetics research. Full article

Low-power microcontrollers, wireless sensors, and embedded gateways form the backbone of many Internet of Things (IoT) deployments. However, their limited memory, constrained energy budgets, and lack of standardized firmware make them attractive targets for diverse attacks, including bootloader backdoors, hardcoded keys, unpatched CVE exploits, and code-reuse attacks, while traditional single-layer defenses are insufficient as they often assume abundant resources. This paper presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) conducted according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, covering 196 peer-reviewed studies on cross-layer security for resource-constrained IoT and Industrial IoT environments, and introduces a four-axis taxonomy—system level, algorithmic paradigm, data granularity, and hardware budget—to structure and compare prior work. At the firmware level, we analyze static analysis, symbolic execution, and machine learning-based binary similarity detection that operate without requiring source code or a full runtime; at the network and behavioral levels, we review lightweight and graph-based intrusion detection systems (IDS), including single-packet authorization, unsupervised anomaly detection, RF spectrum monitoring, and sensor–actuator anomaly analysis bridging cyber-physical security; and at the policy level, we survey identity management, micro-segmentation, and zero-trust enforcement mechanisms supported by blockchain-based authentication and programmable policy enforcement points (PEPs). Our review identifies current strengths, limitations, and open challenges—including scalable firmware reverse engineering, efficient cross-ISA symbolic learning, and practical spectrum anomaly detection under constrained computing environments—and by integrating diverse security layers within a unified taxonomy, this SLR highlights both the state-of-the-art and promising research directions for advancing IoT security. This paper presents an enhanced pseudo-rigid body model (PRBM) integrated with the LuGre friction law to analyze the dynamic behavior of flexure-hinge-based piezoelectric stick–slip actuators (PSSAs). The PRBM captures flexure compliance through Lagrangian dynamics, while Newtonian mechanics describe the piezoelectric stack and slider motion. Non-linear contact effects, including stick–slip transitions, are modeled using the LuGre formulation. A mass–spring–damper model (MSDM) is also implemented as a baseline for comparison. The models are solved in MATLAB Simulink version R2021a and validated against experimental data from a published prototype. The enhanced PRBM achieves strong agreement with experiments, with a root mean square error of 20.19%, compared to 51.65% for the MSDM. By reformulating the equations into closed-form expressions, it removes symbolic evaluations required in the standard PRBM, resulting in one to two orders of magnitude faster simulation time while preserving accuracy. Stable transient simulations are achieved at fine time steps (Δt=108 s). A systematic parametric study highlights preload force, flexure stiffness, friction coefficients, and tangential stiffness as dominant factors in extending the linear frequency–velocity regime. Overall, the PRBM–LuGre framework bridges the gap between computationally intensive finite element analysis and oversimplified lumped models, providing an accurate and efficient tool for design-oriented optimization of compliant piezoelectric actuators. Piezoelectric actuators, widely used in micro-positioning and active control systems, show important hysteresis characteristics. In particular, the hysteresis contribution is a complex phenomenon that is difficult to model when the input amplitude and frequency are time-dependent. Existing dynamic physical models poorly describe the hysteresis influence of industrial mechatronic devices. This paper proposes a novel hybrid data-driven model based on the Bouc–Wen and backlash hysteresis formulations to appraise and compensate for the nonlinear effects. Firstly, the performance of the piezoelectric actuator was simulated and then tested in a complete representative domain, and then using the committee machine approach. Experimental campaigns were conducted to develop an algorithm that incorporated Bouc–Wen and backlash hysteresis parameters derived via genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) approaches for identification. These parameters were combined in a committee machine using a set of frequency clusters. The results obtained demonstrated an error reduction of 23.54% for the committee machine approach compared with the complete approach. The root mean square error (RMSE) was 0.42 µm, and the maximum absolute error (MAE) appraisal was close to 0.86 µm in the 150–250 Hz domain via the Bouc–Wen sub-model tuned with the genetic algorithm (GA). Optical phase modulation is essential for a wide range of silicon photonic integrated circuits used in communication applications. In this study, an optical phase shifter utilizing photo-elastic effects is proposed, where mechanical stress is induced by electrostatic micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) with actuators arranged in a comb drive configuration. The design incorporates suspended serpentine silicon nitride (SiN) optical waveguides. Through extensive numerical simulations, it is shown that the change in the effective refractive index (neff) of the optical waveguide is a function of the voltage applied to the electrostatic actuators and that such neff tuning can be achieved for a broad range of wavelengths. Implemented within one arm of an unbalanced Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI), the phase shifter achieves a phase change of π when the stressed optical path measures 4.7 mm, and the actuators are supplied with 80 V DC and consume almost no power. This results in a half-wave voltage-length product (VπL) of 37.6 V·cm. Comparative analysis with contemporary optical phase shifters highlights the proposed design’s superior power efficiency, compact footprint, and simplified fabrication process, making it a highly efficient component for reconfigurable MEMS-based silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits.
