A compact and polarization-insensitive hexa-band metamaterial absorber (MMA) is designed, fabricated, and experimentally validated for S, C, X, and Ku band applications. The proposed unit cell consists of two square rings, two hexagonal rings, and two diamond-shaped copper resonators printed on an FR-4 dielectric substrate with a thickness of 1.6 mm. The structure exhibits six distinct absorption peaks at 2.178, 5.484, 8.391, 11.811, 15.858, and 18.689 GHz, with corresponding absorptivities of 99%, 98%, 99%, 99%, 99%, and 97%, respectively. The compact unit cell of 12.5 × 12.5 mm2 achieves high absorption efficiency due to strong electromagnetic coupling among the resonators. Simulated and measured results show strong agreement, confirming the accuracy of the design. Owing to its four-fold symmetric geometry, the absorber maintains stable performance under varying polarization angles and incidence angles up to 60° for both TE and TM polarizations. The electric field, magnetic field, and surface current distributions are analyzed to explain the absorption mechanism at each resonant frequency. The proposed MMA demonstrates multiband functionality, angular stability, and high absorptivity within a simple and low-cost design, making it a promising candidate for stealth, air traffic control, and satellite communication applications. All-medium metamaterial absorbers (MMAs) have attracted considerable attention for ultra-broadband electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. Herein, a lightweight graphene aerogel (GA) was synthesized through a low-temperature, atmospheric-pressure reduction route. Benefiting from its 3D porous network, enriched oxygen-containing functional groups, and improved graphitization, the GA offers diverse intrinsic attenuation pathways and a limited effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of only 6.46 GHz (11.54–18.00 GHz at 1.95 mm). To clarify its attenuation mechanism, nonlinear least-squares fitting was used to quantitatively separate electrical loss contributions. Compared with graphene, the GA shows markedly superior attenuation capability, making it a more suitable medium for MMA design. Guided by equivalent circuit modeling, a stacked frustum-configured GA-based MMA (GA-MMA) was developed, where structure-induced resonances compensate for the intrinsic absence of magnetic components in the GA, thereby substantially broadening its absorption range. The GA-MMA achieves an EAB of 40.7 GHz (9.1–49.8 GHz, reflection loss < −10 dB) and maintains stable absorption under incident angles up to ± 70°. Radar cross-section simulations further indicate its potential in electromagnetic interference mitigation, human health protection, and defense information security. This work provides a feasible route for constructing ultralight and broadband MMAs by coupling electrical loss with structural effects. Full article

Electromagnetic absorbers combining ultrathin profiles with robust absorptivity across wide incidence angles are essential for applications such as stealth applications, wireless communications, and quantum computing. Traditional designs, including Salisbury screens, typically require thicknesses of at least a quarter-wavelength (λ/4), restricting their use in compact systems. While metamaterial absorbers (MMAs) offer reduced thicknesses, their absorptivity generally decreases under oblique incidence conditions. Here, we introduce an adjoint optimization-based inverse design method that merges the ultrathin advantage of MMAs with the angle-insensitive characteristics of Salisbury screens. By leveraging the computational efficiency of the adjoint method, we systematically optimize absorber structures as thin as λ/20. The optimized structures achieve absorption exceeding 90% at the target frequency (7.5 GHz) and demonstrate robust performance under oblique incidence, maintaining over 90% absorption up to 50°, approximately 80% at 60°, and around 70% at 70°. Comparative analysis against particle swarm optimization further highlights the superior efficiency of the adjoint method, reducing the computational effort by approximately 98%. This inverse design framework thus provides substantial improvements in both the performance and computational cost, offering a promising solution for advanced electromagnetic absorber design. In stealth applications, there is a growing emphasis on the development of radar-absorbing structures that are efficient, flexible, and optically transparent. This study proposes a screen-printed metamaterial absorber (MMA) on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates using indium tin oxide (ITO) as the grounding layer, which achieves both optical transparency and flexibility. These materials and methods enhance the overall flexibility and transparency of MMA. To address the limited transparency caused by the silver nanoparticle ink for the top pattern, a metal mesh was incorporated to reduce the area ratio of the printed patterns, thereby enhancing transparency. By incrementing the fractal order of the structure, we optimized the operating frequency to target the X-band, which is most commonly used in radar detection. The proposed MMA demonstrates remarkable performance, with a measured absorption of 91.99% at 8.85 GHz and an average optical transmittance of 46.70% across the visible light spectrum (450 to 700 nm), indicating its potential for applications in transparent windows or drone stealth. In this paper, we propose an optically transparent dual-band metamaterial absorber (MMA) that uses Ag nanowire screen-printed fractal structures. The proposed MMA exhibits near-perfect absorption in the C- and K-bands. This dual-band absorption property is achieved through two inductive–capacitive (L-C) resonances located at 6.45 and 21.14 GHz, which are generated by the second-order fractal structures. We analyzed the microwave absorbing mechanisms through the distributions of the surface current and electromagnetic field on the top and bottom layers. The MMA demonstrates an optical transmittance of 63.1% at a wavelength of 550 nm. This high optical transmittance is attained by screen printing transparent Ag nanowire ink onto a transparent PET substrate. Since screen printing is a simple and low-cost fabrication method, the proposed MMA offers the advantages of being low cost while having the properties of optical transparency and effective dual-band absorption. Consequently, it holds great potential for the radar stealth application of C- and K-bands in that it can be attached to the windows of stealth aircraft due to its optical transparency and dual-band near-perfect absorption property. A transparent metamaterial absorber (MMA) with both tunable absorption bandwidth and low infrared (IR) emissivity is proposed in this paper. The MMA is hierarchical, which consists of an infrared shielding layer (IRSL), two radar-absorption layers (RALs), an air/water layer, and an indium–tin–oxide (ITO) backplane from the top downwards. The IRSL and the RALs are made of ITO patterns etched on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates. By changing the thickness of the water, the 90% absorption bandwidth can be tuned from 6.4–11.3 GHz to 12.7–20.6 GHz, while retaining good polarization and angular stability. An equivalent circuit model (ECM) is present, to reveal the physical mechanism of absorption. The proposed MMA has a low theoretical IR emissivity of about 0.24. A sample was fabricated and measured, and the experimental results are consistent with the simulation results, showing its potential applications in stealth glass and multifunctional radome. In this paper, the design and optimization of a wideband THz metamaterial absorber (MMA) are proposed. By simulation, we reached four structures with absorptions higher than 50%, 70%, 80%, and 90%, with relative absorption bandwidths (RABWs) of 1.43, 1.29, 0.93, and 0.72, respectively. Terahertz absorbers can be used in many potential applications, such as in imaging, energy harvesting, scattering reduction, and thermal sensing. Our intended application was to use the optimal absorber on a thermal detector for detectivity over a wide THz range. Since broadband absorption in the range of 0.3 to 2 terahertz is considered for use in medical imaging, the MMA with more than 50% absorption in the range of 0.35-2.1 THz was selected. The designs were also intended to have the capability of being implemented on different devices, such as bolometers. The cost of the fabrication of the proposed absorber was also low because of the implementation of a single-layer MMA design and the utilization of affordable and more accessible materials and techniques. Our proposed structure had a minimum feature size of 3 μm, making the fabrication process convenient using the standard photolithography method as well. We used thin layers of nickel as the metal for both the single-layer pattern and ground layer, which were placed on the front and back sides of the structure, respectively. The nickel thin film layers were deposited using the sputtering technique and separated by a dielectric layer. The material chosen for the dielectric layer was SU8, which has proper electromagnetic properties and also good adhesion to nickel. Characterization of the fabricated absorber was performed using a terahertz spectroscopy system, and the experimental results verified the high absorption of the sample. Full article

Energy-efficient buildings are a new demand in the current era. In this paper, we present a novel metamaterial design aimed at achieving efficient solar energy absorption through a periodic MMA structure composed of a W-GaAs-W. The proposed structure can be implemented as the window coating and in turn it can absorb the incident solar energy and, then, this energy can be used to fulfill the energy demand of the building. Our results reveal significant improvements, achieving an average absorptance of 96.94% in the spectral range. Furthermore, we explore the influence of the angle of incidence on the absorber’s response, demonstrating its angle-insensitive behavior with high absorption levels (above 90%) for incidence angles up to 60° for TE polarization and 40° for TM polarization. The proposed structure presents a significant advancement in metamaterial-based solar energy absorption. By exploring the effects of structural parameters and incident angles, we have demonstrated the optimized version of our proposed absorber. The potential applications of this metamaterial absorber in self-sufficient futuristic building technologies and self-sustaining systems offer new opportunities for harnessing solar energy and are a valuable contribution to future developments in the fields of metamaterials and renewable energy. Terahertz (THz) metamaterials have attracted great attention due to their widely application potential in smart THz devices; however, most of them are fabricated on rigid substrate and thus limit the exploration of flexible THz electronics. In this paper, a flexible THz metamaterial absorber (MMA) incorporated with phase change material vanadium dioxide (VO2) is proposed. The simulation results indicate that two absorption peaks at around 0.24 THz (marked as A) and 0.46 THz (marked as B) can be observed by designing a I-shaped metamaterial combined with split ring structure. The strong absorption over 92% at 0.24 THz is bending-insensitive, but the absorption at 0.46 THz is bending-sensitive, across the bending angle in the range of 0–50 degrees. Moreover, dynamic modulation of the absorption can be achieved across the insulator-metal phase transition of VO2. Particularly, the absorption of the A-peak can be tuned from 99.4% to 46.9%, while the absorption of the B-peak can be tuned from 39.6% to 99.3%. This work would provide significance for the design of flexible THz smart devices. Full article

We created an ultra-thin, triple-band incident angle-insensitive perfect metamaterial absorber (MMA) with a metallic patch and a continuous metal ground isolated by a central dielectric substrate. The top metallic patch, placed across the edges of the 0.58 mm thickness Rogers RO4003C (lossy) substrate, forms the bulk of the projected absorber’s ultra-thin layer. Nonetheless, absorption is exceedingly strong, covering C-band, X-band and K-band and reaching levels of 97.8%, 99.9%, and 99.9%, respectively, under normal and even oblique (0° to 45°) incident conditions. In chosen ranges of frequency of 6.24, 10.608, and 18.624 GHz for both TM and TE mode, the displayed Q-factors were 62.4, 17.68, and 26.61, respectively. We correspondingly calculated the RAB (relative absorption bandwidth) to evaluate absorption performance. An equivalent circuit proved its performance capabilities, indicating that it would produce a high-quality MMA from ADS software. Furthermore, the absorber’s performance has been verified in free space on a sample being tested using a different array of unit cells. Moreover, the proposed structures with HFSS simulators to display the MMA’s absolute absorption at each absorption peak are somewhat inconsistent with the results of the CST simulator. Because of its superior performance, the ultra-thin absorber is suited for a wide range of applications, including satellite applications such as radar systems, stealth technology, imaging, and electromagnetic interference reduction. Metamaterial absorbers (MMAs) that absorb electromagnetic waves among an ultra-broad frequency band have attracted great attention in military and civilian applications. In this paper, an ultra-broadband and highly-efficient MMA is presented. The unit cell of the proposed MMA was constructed with two cross-placed stand-up gradient impedance graphene films, which play a key role in improving impedance matching. Considering the trade-off between absorbing performance and processing complexity, in our design, we adopted the stand-up graphene films that have a gradient with three orders of magnitude in total. The simulated results of the proposed absorber show an ultra-broadband absorption (absorptivity > 90%) from 1.8 GHz to 66.7 GHz and a highly-efficient absorption (absorptivity > 97%) in the range of 2–21.7 GHz and 39.6–57 GHz. The field analysis was adopted to explain the mechanism of the proposed absorber. To validate this design, a prototype of 20 × 20 units was processed and assembled. The graphene films were processed with graphene conductive ink using screen print technology. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulated ones. The proposed absorber may find potential applications in the field of stealth technologies and electromagnetic interference. Full article

This article proposes a square split-ring resonator (SSRR) metamaterial absorber (MMA) for sub-6 GHz application. The unit cell of the MMA was designed and fabricated on commercially available low-cost FR-4 substrate material with a dielectric constant o 4.3. The higher effective medium ratio (EMR) of the designed unit cell shows the compactness of the MMA. The dimension of the unit cell is 9.5 × 9.5 × 1.6 mm3, which consists of two split rings and two arms with outer SSRR. The proposed MMA operates at 2.5 GHz, 4.9 GHz, and 6 GHz frequency bands with a 90% absorption peak and shows a single negative metamaterial property. The E-field, H-field, and surface current are also explored in support of absorption analysis. Moreover, the equivalent circuit model of the proposed MMA is modelled and simulated to validate the resonance behavior of the MMA structure. Finally, the proposed MMA can be used for the specific frequency bands of 5G applications such as signal absorption, crowdsensing, SAR reduction, etc. Full article

Researchers are trying to work out how to make a broadband response metamaterial absorber (MMA). Electromagnetic (EM) waves that can pass through the atmosphere and reach the ground are most commonly used in the visible frequency range. In addition, they are used to detect faults, inspect tapped live-powered components, electrical failures, and thermal leaking hot spots. This research provides a numerical analysis of a compact split ring resonator (SRR) and circular ring resonator (CRR) based metamaterial absorber (MMA) using a three-layer substrate material configuration for wideband visible optical wavelength applications. The proposed metamaterial absorber has an overall unit cell size of 800 nm × 800 nm × 175 nm in both TE and TM mode simulations and it achieved above 80% absorbance in the visible spectrums from 450 nm to 650 nm wavelength. The proposed MA performed a maximum absorptivity of 99.99% at 557 nm. In addition, the steady absorption property has a broad range of oblique incidence angle stability. The polarization conversion ratio (PCR) is evaluated to ensure that the MMA is perfect. Both TM and TE modes can observe polarization insensitivity and wide-angle incidence angle stability with 18° bending effects. Moreover, a structural study using electric and magnetic fields was carried out to better understand the MMA’s absorption properties. The observable novelty of the proposed metamaterial is compact in size compared with reference paper, and it achieves an average absorbance of 91.82% for visible optical wavelength. The proposed MMA also has bendable properties. The proposed MMA validation has been done by two numerical simulation software. The MMA has diverse applications, such as color image, wide-angle stability, substantial absorption, absolute invisible layers, thermal imaging, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications. Advanced wireless communication technology claims miniaturized, reconfigurable, highly efficient, and flexible meta-devices for various applications, including conformal implementation, flexible antennas, wearable sensors, etc. Therefore, bearing these challenges in mind, a dual-band flexible metamaterial absorber (MMA) with frequency-reconfigurable characteristics is developed in this research. The geometry of the proposed MMA comprises a square patch surrounded by a square ring, which is mounted over a copper-backed flexible dielectric substrate. The top surface of the MMA is made of silver nanoparticle ink and a middle polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate backed by a copper groundsheet. The proposed MMA shows an absorption rate of above 99% at 24 and 35 GHz. In addition, the absorption features are also studied for different oblique incident angles, and it is found that the proposed MMA remains stable for θ = 10–50°. The frequency tunability characteristics are achieved by stimulating the capacitance of the varactor diode, which connects the inner patch with the outer ring. To justify the robustness and conformability of the presented MMA, the absorption features are also studied by bending the MMA over different radii of an arbitrary cylinder. Moreover, a multiple-reflection interference model is developed to justify the simulated and calculated absorption of the proposed MMA. It is found that the simulated and calculated results are in close agreement with each other. This kind of MMA could be useful for dual-band sensing and filtering operations. Full article

The direct wave between the transceiver antenna negatively affects the dynamic range and imaging quality of ground penetrating radar (GPR). Suppressing this direct wave is a vital problem in enhancing the performance of the whole GPR system. In this paper, a Minkowski-fractal metamaterial absorber (MMA) with the resistive film is proposed in the GPR transceiver antenna to reduce the mutual coupling. The simulated and measured results indicate that this MMA has an effective wideband absorption in 1.0-8.0 GHz. And the thickness of MMA is only 0.007 λ0 (with respect to 2.0 GHz). This wideband MMA can reduce the mutual coupling of the proposed GPR transceiver antenna by an average of 10 dB. And it also mitigates the time-domain ringing problem of the transmit antenna. Real-world experiments demonstrate that the direct wave from the transmitting antenna can be reduced and the target echo arriving at the receiving antenna can be increased if this MMA is placed in the proposed transceiver antenna. This resistive film-based MMA offers great promise in realizing low-cost, compact, and lightweight GPR antennas, which can also be extended to high-frequency microwave imaging. Full article
