Metamaterial absorbers in terahertz (THz) based bands have garnered significant attention for their potential applications in military stealth, terahertz imaging, and other fields. Nevertheless, the limited bandwidth, low absorption rate, and heavy weight greatly reduce the further development and wide application of terahertz absorbers. To solve these problems, we propose a polystyrene (PS)-based ultra-broadband metamaterial absorber integrated with a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) double-sided adhesive layer and a patterned indium tin oxide (ITO) film through the simulation method, which operates in the THz band. The electromagnetic wave absorption properties and underlying physical absorption mechanisms of the proposed metamaterial absorbers are comprehensively modeled and rigorously numerically simulated. The research demonstrates the metamaterial absorber can achieve absorption performance of over 90% for fully polarized incident waves in the ultra-wideband range of 1.2–10 THz, especially achieving perfect absorption characteristics of over 99.9% near 1.8–1.9 THz and 5.8–6.2 THz. The proposed absorber has a lightweight physical property of 0.7 kg/m2 and polarization-insensitive characteristic, and it achieves a broad-angle that allows a range of incidence angles up to 60°. The simulation research results of this article provide theoretical support for the design of terahertz absorbers with ultra-wideband absorption characteristics. Full article

This study aims to analyze the bending behavior of polylactic acid (PLA) structures made by fusion deposition modeling (FDM) technology. The investigation analyzed chiral structures such as lozenge and clepsydra, as well as geometries with wavy patterns such as roller and Es, in addition to a honeycomb structure. All geometries have a relative density of 50%. After being subjected to three-point bending tests, the capacity to spring back with respect to the bending angle and the shape recovery of the structures were measured. The roller and lozenge structures demonstrated the best performance, with shape recovery assessed through three consecutive hot water immersion cycles. The lozenge structure exhibits 25% higher energy absorption than the roller, but the latter ensures better replicability and shape stability. Additionally, the roller absorbs 15% less energy than the lozenge, which experiences a 27% decrease in absorption between the first and second cycle. This work provides new insights into the bending-based energy absorption and recovery behavior of PLA metamaterials, relevant for applications in adaptive and energy-dissipating systems. Full article

The proliferation of electromagnetic wave applications has accentuated electromagnetic pollution concerns, highlighting the critical importance of electromagnetic wave absorbers (EMA). This study proposes innovative I-Wrapped Package Lattice electromagnetic wave absorbers (IWP–EMA) based on the triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattice structure. Through a rational design of porous gradient structures, broadband wave absorption was achieved while maintaining lightweight characteristics and mechanical robustness. The optimized three-dimensional configuration features a 20 mm thick gradient structure with a progressive relative density transition from 10% to 30%. Under normal incidence conditions, this gradient IWP–EMA basically achieves broadband absorption with a reflection loss below −10 dB across the 2–40 GHz frequency band, with absorption peaks below −19 dB, demonstrating good impedance-matching characteristics. Additionally, due to the complex interactions of electromagnetic waves within the structure, the proposed IWP–EMA achieves a wide-angle absorption range of 70° under Transverse Electric (TE) polarization and 70° under Transverse Magnetic (TM) polarization. The synergistic integration of the TPMS design and additive manufacturing technology employed in this study significantly expands the design space and application potential of electromagnetic absorption structures. Addressing the urgent need for lightweight and reusable energy-absorbing materials in aviation impact resistance, this study introduces an innovative multi-directional braided metamaterial design enabled by 4D printing technology. This approach overcomes the dual challenges of intricate manufacturing processes and the limited functionality inherent to traditional textile preforms. Six distinct braided structural units (types 1–6) were devised based on periodic trigonometric functions (Y = A sin(12πX)), and integrated with shape memory polylactic acid (SMP-PLA), thereby achieving a synergistic combination of topological architecture and adaptive response characteristics. Compression tests reveal that reducing strip density to 50–25% (as in types 1–3) markedly enhances energy absorption performance, achieving a maximum specific energy absorption of 3.3 J/g. Three-point bending tests further demonstrate that the yarn amplitude parameter A is inversely correlated with load-bearing capacity; for instance, the type 1 structure (A = 3) withstands a maximum load stress of 8 MPa, representing a 100% increase compared to the type 2 structure (A = 4.5). A multi-branch viscoelastic constitutive model elucidates the temperature-dependent stress relaxation behavior during the glass–rubber phase transition and clarifies the relaxation time conversion mechanism governed by the Williams–Landel–Ferry (WLF) and Arrhenius equations. Experimental results further confirm the shape memory effect, with the type 3 structure fully recovering its original shape within 3 s under thermal stimulation at 80 °C, thus addressing the non-reusability issue of conventional energy-absorbing structures. This work establishes a new paradigm for the design of impact-resistant aviation components, particularly in the context of anti-collision structures and reusable energy absorption systems for eVTOL aircraft. Future research should further investigate the regulation of multi-stimulus response behaviors and microstructural optimization to advance the engineering application of smart textile metamaterials in aviation protection systems. Electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials are crucial for a wide range of applications, yet most existing materials suffer from complex fabrication and narrow absorption bands, particularly under harsh environmental conditions. In this study, we introduce a broadband metamaterial absorber based on Ti3C2O2 MXene, a novel two-dimensional material that uniquely combines high electrical and metallic conductivity with hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, and an extensive surface area. Through advanced finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, the proposed absorber achieves over 95% absorption from 0.3 µm to 18 µm. Additionally, other MXene variants, including Ti3C2F2 and Ti3C2(OH)2, demonstrate robust absorption above 85%. This absorber not only outperforms previously reported structures in terms of efficiency and spectral coverage but also opens avenues for integration into applications such as infrared sensing, energy harvesting, wearable electronics, and Internet of Things (IoT) systems. Multi-stable mechanical metamaterials based on the snap-through behavior of cosine beams have been shown to have significant potential in the field of capacity absorption due to their advantages such as reusability and structural simplicity. However, traditional multi-stable metamaterials have exhibited limitations in both energy absorption and trapping ability. Inspired by the bionic multilevel structure, a novel hierarchical multi-stable cylindrical structure (HMCS) based on cosine curved beams is proposed. We investigated the snap-through behaviors and energy absorption capacity of the HMCS. Both finite element simulation results and experimental results show that the hierarchical multi-stable structure exhibits excellent specific energy absorption and energy trapping capabilities compared to traditional multi-stable cylindrical structures (TMCSs). Furthermore, by analyzing the effect of height h and thickness t on the snap-through behavior of the structure, the key parameters determining the mono-stable or bi-stable response are identified. In addition, a gradient-based study of the structure reveals the dominant role of stiffness in the snap-through behavior of multilayer structures. This work provides insights into the application of multi-stable cylindrical structures in energy trapping and absorption and offers a new strategy for designing high-efficiency energy-absorbing metamaterials. In this study, a terahertz microfluidic multi-band sensor was designed. Unlike previous microfluidic absorption sensors that rely on dipole resonance, the proposed sensor uses a physical mechanism for absorption by exciting higher-order lattice resonances in microfluidic structures. With a Fabry–Perot cavity, the sensor can form an absorption peak with a high quality factor (Q) and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM). A high Q value and a narrow FWHM are valuable in the field of sensing and provide strong support for high-precision sensing. On this basis, the sensing performance of the device was investigated. The simulation results clearly show that the absorption sensor has ultra-high sensitivity, which reaches 400 GHz/Refractive Index Unit (RIU). In addition, the sensor generates three absorption peaks, overcoming the limitations of a single frequency band in a composite resonance mode and multidimensional frequency response, which has potential application value in the field of volatile organic compound (VOC) sensing. Electromagnetic absorbers combining ultrathin profiles with robust absorptivity across wide incidence angles are essential for applications such as stealth applications, wireless communications, and quantum computing. Traditional designs, including Salisbury screens, typically require thicknesses of at least a quarter-wavelength (λ/4), restricting their use in compact systems. While metamaterial absorbers (MMAs) offer reduced thicknesses, their absorptivity generally decreases under oblique incidence conditions. Here, we introduce an adjoint optimization-based inverse design method that merges the ultrathin advantage of MMAs with the angle-insensitive characteristics of Salisbury screens. By leveraging the computational efficiency of the adjoint method, we systematically optimize absorber structures as thin as λ/20. The optimized structures achieve absorption exceeding 90% at the target frequency (7.5 GHz) and demonstrate robust performance under oblique incidence, maintaining over 90% absorption up to 50°, approximately 80% at 60°, and around 70% at 70°. Comparative analysis against particle swarm optimization further highlights the superior efficiency of the adjoint method, reducing the computational effort by approximately 98%. This inverse design framework thus provides substantial improvements in both the performance and computational cost, offering a promising solution for advanced electromagnetic absorber design. Noise reduction for manufacturing enterprises is favorable for workers because it relieves occupational diseases and improves productivity. An acoustic metamaterial with parallel, unequal cavities is proposed and optimized, aiming to achieve an optimal broadband sound absorber in the low–frequency range with a limited total thickness. A theoretical model for the acoustic metamaterial of a hexagonal column with 6 triangular cavities and 12 right–angled trapezoidal cavities was established. The lengths of these embedded apertures were optimized using the particle swarm optimization algorithm, with initial parameters obtained from acoustic finite element simulation. Additionally, the impacts of manufacturing errors on different regions were analyzed. The experimental results prove that the proposed acoustic metamaterials can achieve an average absorption coefficient of 0.87 from 384 Hz to 667 Hz with a thickness of 50 mm, 0.83 from 265 Hz to 525 Hz with a thickness of 70 mm, and 0.82 from 156 Hz to 250 Hz with a thickness of 100 mm. The experimental validation demonstrates the accuracy of the finite element model and the effectiveness of the optimization algorithm. This extensible acoustic metamaterial, with excellent sound absorption performance in the low-frequency range, can be mass-produced and widely applied for noise control in industries. Full article

Terahertz metamaterial dual-band absorbers are used for multi-target detection and high-sensitivity sensing in complex environments by enhancing information that reflects differences in the measured substances. Traditional design processes are complex and time-consuming. Machine learning-based methods, such as neural networks and deep learning, require a large number of simulations to gather training samples. Existing design methods based on single-objective optimization often result in uneven multi-objective optimization, which restricts practical applications. In this study, we developed a metamaterial absorber featuring a circular split-ring resonator with four gaps nested in a “卍” structure and used the Multi-Objective Firefly Algorithm based on Multiple Cooperative Strategies to achieve fast optimization of the absorber’s structural parameters. A comparison revealed that our approach requires fewer iterations than the Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization and reduces design time by nearly half. The absorber designed using this method exhibited two resonant peaks at 0.607 THz and 0.936 THz, with absorptivity exceeding 99%, indicating near-perfect absorption and quality factors of 31.42 and 30.08, respectively. Additionally, we validated the absorber’s wave-absorbing mechanism by applying impedance-matching theory. Finally, we elucidated the resonance-peak formation mechanism of the absorber based on the surface current and electric-field distribution at the resonance frequencies. These results confirmed that the proposed dual-band metamaterial absorber design is efficient, representing a significant step toward the development of metamaterial devices. Full article

This study presents a cost-effective Hybrid Metamaterial Absorber (HMA) featuring a simple circular-patterned cylindrical design, comprising an indium antimonide (InSb) resonator on a thin copper sheet. Through numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the structure exhibits temperature-tunable properties and refractive index sensitivity. At 300 K (refractive index = 1), a peak absorption of 99.94% is achieved at 1.797 THz. Efficient operation is observed across a 40 K temperature range and a refractive index spectrum of 1.00–1.05, relevant for thermal imaging and spatial bio-sensing. The simulated temperature sensing sensitivity is 13.07 GHz/K, and the refractive index sensitivity is 1146 GHz/RIU. Parametric analyses reveal tunable absorption through adjustments of the InSb resonator design parameters. Owing to its high efficiency and sensitivity demonstrated in simulations, this HMA shows promise for sensing applications in biotechnology, semiconductor fabrication, and energy harvesting. This study addresses the challenges of high-power consumption and complexity in conventional infrared (IR) gas sensors by integrating metamaterials and gold coatings into IR radiation sources to reduce radiation loss. In addition, emitter design optimization and material selection were employed to minimize conduction loss. Our metasurface exhibited superior performance, achieving a narrower full width at half maximum at 4197 and 3950 nm, resulting in more confined emission spectral ranges. This focused emission reduced energy waste at unnecessary wavelengths, improving efficiency compared to traditional blackbody emitters. At 300 °C, the device consumed only 6.8 mW, while maintaining temperature uniformity and a fast response time. This enhancement is promising for the operation of such sensors in IoT networks with ultra-low power consumption and at suitably low costs for widespread demands in high-technology farming. In this paper, we propose a multi-mode switchable ultra-wideband terahertz absorber based on patterned graphene and VO2 by designing a graphene pattern composed of a large rectangle rotated 45° in the center and four identical small rectangles in the periphery, as well as a VO2 layer pattern composed of four identical rectangular boxes and small rectangles embedded in the dielectric layer. VO2 can regulate conductivity via temperature, the Fermi level of graphene depends on the external voltage, and the graphene layer and VO2 layer produce resonance responses at different frequencies, resulting in high absorption. The proposed absorption microdevices have three modes: Mode 1 (2.52–4.52 THz), Mode 2 (3.91–9.66 THz), and Mode 3 (2.14–10 THz), which are low-band absorption, high-band absorption, and ultra-wideband absorption. At 2.96 THz in Mode 1, the absorption rate reaches 99.98%; at 8.04 THz in Mode 2, the absorption rate reaches 99.76%; at 5.04 THz in Mode 3, the absorption rate reaches 99.85%; and at 8.4 THz, the absorption rate reaches 99.76%. We explain the absorption mechanism by analyzing the electric field distribution and local plasma resonance, and reveal the high-performance absorption mechanism by using the relative impedance theory. In addition, absorption microdevices have the advantages of polarization insensitivity, incident angle insensitivity, multi-mode switching, ultra-wideband absorption, large manufacturing tolerance, etc., and have potential research and application value in electromagnetic stealth devices, filters and optical switches. This work presents a theoretical and numerical investigation of a switchable tri-functional terahertz metamaterial incorporating vanadium dioxide (VO2) and photosensitive silicon. The selective absorption, broadband linear-to-linear polarization conversion, and dual-band asymmetric transmission (AT) can be realized by utilizing the phase transition characteristic of VO2. When VO2 behaves as a metal, the proposed metamaterial functions as a selective perfect absorber for x-polarized waves at 2.84 THz, while exhibiting near-zero absorption for y-polarized waves. When VO2 is in its insulating state, the proposed metamaterial acts as a linear polarization converter, achieving a polarization conversion ratio exceeding 99% within the frequency range of 1.07 to 4.29 THz. Meanwhile, a dual-band AT effect can be simultaneously realized associated with the broadband near-perfect polarization conversion. Furthermore, the polarization conversion efficiency and AT can be actively modulated by adjusting the conductivity of the photosensitive silicon, offering a novel approach for realizing multifunctional terahertz devices.
