Static analysis is conducted for functionally graded material (FGM) spherical shells under thermo-mechanical loads, based on the three-dimensional thermo-elasticity theory. The material properties, which vary with both the radial coordinate and temperature, introduce nonlinearity to the problem. To address this, a layer model is proposed, wherein the shell is discretized into numerous concentric spherical layers, each possessing uniform material properties. Within this framework, the nonlinear heat conduction equations are first solved iteratively. The resulting temperature field is then applied to the thermo-elastic equations, which are subsequently solved using a combined state space and transfer matrix method to obtain displacement and stress solutions. Comparison with existing literature results demonstrates good agreement. Finally, a parametric study is presented to investigate the effects of material temperature dependence and gradient index on the thermo-mechanical behaviors of the FGM spherical shells. Full article

High-energy solid propellants are multiphase engineering materials, whose mechanical behavior is predominantly governed by the characteristics of embedded crystalline particles. While microstructural influences have been extensively examined, quantitative correlations between microstructure and macroscopic mechanical properties remain underexplored. This work develops a cohesive finite element method (CFEM) framework to quantify the thermomechanical response of high-energy solid propellants at the microstructural scale. The analysis focuses on impact loading at strain rates ranging from 103 to 104 s−1, accounting for large deformation, thermomechanical coupling, and microcrack-induced failure. Damage evolution under impact conditions was evaluated using a combined neural network-based inverse identification method and a three-dimensional cohesive finite element model to determine temperature-dependent bilinear-polynomial cohesive parameters. Results demonstrate a strong dependence of the propellant’s mechanical behavior on both strain rate and temperature. Validation against experimental data confirms that the proposed temperature-sensitive CFEM accurately predicts both damage progression and macroscopic mechanical responses. Full article

Room-temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone foams are used in many industrial applications that require the material to perform over long time periods. However, mechanical properties tend to deteriorate when these foams age under a compressive load. The chemical aging is attributed to the presence of unreacted functional groups of the prepolymers, residues from acid, and catalytically active tin (II) species. Here, an optimized thermal treatment of an RTV foam that achieves completion of curing reactions and deactivation of reactive species is proposed. Foams that were thermally aged for three months under compressive load showed no signs of compression set, indicative of the effectiveness of the implemented post-curing approach. In addition, the effects of fillers (diatomaceous earth, fumed silica, and carbon nanofibers) on thermomechanical properties were investigated. Tensile strength, tear strength, and thermal conductivity increased when these fillers were added to the unfilled RTV formulation, with carbon nanofibers (CNFs) being the most effective filler. Rheological studies of RTV formulations indicated that 2.5 wt.% of CNFs is the upper limit that can be added to the RTV formulation. Full article

This study introduces and validates a comparative experiment-based method for determining the effective thickness of composite glass, including polymeric laminated glass (with polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and SentryGlas® (SGP) interlayers) and vacuum glazing. This method employs comparative four-point bending tests, defining effective thickness by equating the bending stress of a composite specimen to that of a reference monolithic glass specimen under identical loading and boundary conditions. Specimens with varying configurations (glass thicknesses of 5 mm, 6 mm and 8 mm) were tested using non-destructive four-point bending tests under a multi-stage loading protocol (100 N–1000 N). Strain rosettes measured maximum strains at each loading stage to calculate bending stress. Analysis of the bending stress state revealed that vacuum glazing and SGP laminated glass exhibit superior load-bearing capacity compared to PVB laminated glass. The proposed method successfully determined the effective thickness for both laminated glass and vacuum glazing. Furthermore, results demonstrate that employing a 12 mm monolithic reference glass provides the highest accuracy for effective thickness determination. Theoretical bending stress calculations using the effective thickness derived from the 12 mm reference glass showed less than 10% deviation from experimental values. Conversely, compared to established standards and empirical formulas, the proposed method offers superior accuracy, particularly for vacuum glazing. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the viscoelastic interlayers (PVB and SGP) were investigated through static tensile tests and dynamic thermomechanical analysis (DMA). Distinct tensile behaviors and differing time-dependent shear transfer capacities between the two interlayer materials are found out. Key factors influencing the reliability of the method are also discussed and analyzed. This study provides a universally practical and applicable solution for accurate and effective thickness estimation in composite glass design. Full article

Thermomechanical processing has a significant impact on the porosity and mechanical properties of AISI 316L stainless steel produced by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). This work evaluated the effect of three heat treatment conditions: as-built (HT0), annealed at 650 °C for 3 h with air cooling (HT1), and annealed at 1050 °C for 1 h followed by water quenching (HT2), combined with cold and hot rolling at different strain levels. The most pronounced improvement was observed after 20% hot rolling followed by water quenching (HR + WQ), which reduced porosity to 0.05% and yielded the most spherical pores, with a circularity factor (fcircle) of 0.90 and an aspect ratio (AsR) of 1.57. At elevated temperatures, the matrix becomes more pliable, which promotes pore closure and helps reduce stress concentrations. On the other hand, applying heat treatment without causing deformation resulted in the pores growing and increasing porosity in the build direction. The fractography supported these findings, showing a transition from brittle to more ductile fracture surfaces. Heat treatment combined with plastic deformation effectively reduced internal defects and improved both structural integrity and strength. Full article

A physical and mathematical model and a methodology for studying the mechanical properties of a nonferromagnetic conductive panel under the action of a quasi-steady electromagnetic field are proposed. A two-dimensional thermomechanics problem is formulated for the considered panel of a rectangular cross-section. The initial relations for finding the determinant functions, namely, the components of the quasi-static stress tensor, are given. The thermomechanical problem was addressed using the author’s approach, which involves approximating the defining functions by cubic polynomials along the thickness direction. This approach enabled the transformation of the initial two-dimensional boundary value problems into one-dimensional formulations based on the integral characteristics of the defining functions. Using a finite integral transformation in the transverse coordinate, the expressions of all integral characteristics and determinant functions were obtained. On the basis of the proposed mathematical model, a computer analysis of all components of the quasi-static stress tensor and stress intensity in a tungsten panel depending on the dimensionless Fourier time, the Biot criterion, and the induction heating parameters was carried out. The thermomechanical behavior of the panel was analyzed using two modes of near-surface and in-depth induction heating of the panel by a homogeneous quasi-steady electromagnetic field. Full article

In this study, the effects of post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) on residual stress distribution and fatigue crack propagation (FCP) behavior in linear friction welded (LFW) Ti-6Al-4V joints were investigated. Microstructural evolution in the weld center zone (WCZ), thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ), heat-affected zone (HAZ), and base metal (BM) was characterized using scanning electron microscropy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Mechanical properties were evaluated via Vickers hardness testing and digital image correlation (DIC)-based tensile testing. Residual stresses before and after PWHT were measured using the contour method. The LFW process introduced significant residual stresses, with tensile stresses up to 709.2 MPa in the WCZ, resulting in non-uniform fatigue crack growth behavior. PWHT at 650 °C and 750 °C effectively reduced these stresses. After PWHT, fatigue cracks propagated uniformly across the weld region, enabling reliable determination of crack growth rates. The average crack growth rates of the heat-treated specimens were comparable to those of the base metal, confirming that PWHT, particularly at 750 °C, stabilizes the fatigue crack path and relieves internal stress. Nowadays, Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printing offers promising opportunities for the customized manufacturing of ankle–foot orthoses (AFOs) targeted towards rehabilitation purposes. Polypropylene (PP) represents an ideal candidate in orthotic applications due to its light weight and superior mechanical properties, offering an excellent balance between flexibility, chemical resistance, biocompatibility, and long-term durability. However, Additive Manufacturing (AM) of AFOs based on PP remains a major challenge due to its limited bed adhesion and high shrinkage, especially for making large parts such as AFOs. The primary innovation of the present study lies in the optimization of FFF 3D printing parameters for the fabrication of functional, patient-specific orthoses using PP, a material still underutilized in the AM of medical devices. Firstly, a thorough thermomechanical characterization was conducted, allowing the implementation of a (thermo-)elastic material model for the used PP filament. Thereafter, a Taguchi design of experiments (DOE) was established to study the influence of several printing parameters (extrusion temperature, printing speed, layer thickness, infill density, infill pattern, and part orientation) on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed specimens. Three-point bending tests were conducted to evaluate the strength and stiffness of the samples, while additional tensile tests were performed on the 3D-printed orthoses using a home-made innovative device to validate the optimal configurations. The results showed that the maximum flexural modulus of 3D-printed specimens was achieved when the printing speed was around 50 mm/s. The most significant parameter for mechanical performance and reduction in printing time was shown to be infill density, contributing 73.2% to maximum stress and 75.2% to Interlaminar Shear Strength (ILSS). Finally, the applicability of the finite element method (FEM) to simulate the FFF process-induced deflections, part distortion (warpage), and residual stresses in 3D-printed orthoses was investigated using a numerical simulation tool (Digimat-AM®). The combination of Taguchi DOE with Digimat-AM for polypropylene AFOs highlighted that the 90° orientation appeared to be the most suitable configuration, as it minimizes deformation and von Mises stress, ensuring improved quality and robustness of the printed orthoses. The findings from this study contribute by providing a reliable method for printing PP parts with improved mechanical performance, thereby opening new opportunities for its use in medical-grade additive manufacturing. Polymer blending techniques enable the tailoring of desired properties for diverse applications. This study investigates the effect of PMMA content on the thermomechanical, chemical, mechanical, and fatigue life properties of PC/ABS/PMMA (polycarbonate/acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene/polymethylmethacrylate) ternary blends. To this end, various characterization analyses, as well as tensile, impact, and fatigue tests, were conducted. The results indicate that the viscoelastic modulus improves with increasing PMMA content in ternary blends. Furthermore, PC/ABS/PMMA blends exhibit an immiscible phase morphology. The elastic modulus, yield strength, and tensile strength increase with higher PMMA content, while the elongation at break and impact strength decrease. Fatigue strength and the fatigue strength exponent were found to vary nonlinearly with PMMA content. Compared to PC/ABS blends, PC/ABS/PMMA blends demonstrated improvements of approximately 12% to 58% and 26% to 117% in hysteresis energy and the dynamic elastic modulus, respectively. Additionally, fatigue life cycles improved by 5% to 11% at low stress amplitudes. This experimental study provides comprehensive insight into the complex interplay among the chemical, thermomechanical, mechanical, and fatigue properties of ternary PC/ABS/PMMA blends, highlighting their potential for applications requiring balanced or tailored structural and material characteristics. With the rapid development of wearable electronics, traditional rigid thermal management materials face limitations in flexibility, conformability, and multi-physics adaptability. Low-dimensional carbon materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes combine ultrahigh thermal conductivity with outstanding mechanical compliance, making them promising building blocks for flexible thermal regulation. This review summarizes recent advances in integrating these materials into textile architectures, mapping the evolution of this emerging field. Key topics include phonon-dominated heat transfer mechanisms, strategies for modulating interfacial thermal resistance, and dimensional effects across scales; beyond these intrinsic factors, hierarchical textile configurations further tailor macroscopic performance. We highlight how one-dimensional fiber bundles, two-dimensional woven fabrics, and three-dimensional porous networks construct multi-directional thermal pathways while enhancing porosity and stress tolerance. As for practical applications, the performance of carbon-based textiles in wearable systems, flexible electronic packaging, and thermal coatings is also critically assessed. Current obstacles—namely limited manufacturing scalability, interfacial mismatches, and thermal performance degradation under repeated deformation—are analyzed. To overcome these challenges, future studies should prioritize the co-design of structural and thermo-mechanical properties, the integration of multiple functionalities, and optimization guided by data-driven approaches. This review thus lays a solid foundation for advancing carbon-based smart textiles toward next-generation flexible thermal management technologies. Full article

The effects of thermo-mechanical treatment and different annealing temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a nickel-based superalloy were investigated by metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscope, and mechanical properties measurements. The results demonstrated that the tensile strength and elongation of the hot-rolled samples were higher than those of the annealed ones. The ultimate engineering stress and engineering strain of the studied samples solid solution treated at 1175 °C for 4 h were 709 ± 19.8 MPa and 87.2 ± 1.4%, and the product of strength times elongation (PSE) was 61.8 GPa·%. These findings indicated that the thermo-mechanical treatment was an effective method to improve both the strength and the ductility of the nickel-based superalloy. Full article

This study explored the effects of the finishing deformation temperature on the microstructure and properties of CrVNb micro-alloyed steel following thermomechanical processing (TMP). The investigation encompassed the influence of the deformation temperature on the ferrite grain size, precipitate characteristics, hardness and flow stress. The microstructure characterization was performed using optical and electron microscopy techniques. The results show that decreasing the deformation temperature refined the ferrite grains, though a bimodal ferrite grain structure formed when the deformation temperature fell to about 100 °C below the Ar3 temperature. Additionally, lower deformation temperatures increased the number density of strain-induced precipitates (SIPs), whereas the density of finer precipitates (random and interphase precipitates (IPs)) decreased. The highest hardness was observed in a sample deformed at 950–850 °C temperatures. These findings highlight the impact of the finishing deformation temperatures on the microstructural and mechanical properties, providing valuable insights for optimizing steel processing conditions. Resol phenol–formaldehyde (PF) resin was modified with 2.5 and 5.0 wt% polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS). This study characterizes the modified resin and its subsequently fabricated glass fiber (GF)-reinforced composites (30–60 wt% GF). Formation of an organic–inorganic hybrid network, via reaction between Si-H groups of PMHS and hydroxyl (-OH) groups of the resol resin, was confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR. DSC and TGA/DTG revealed enhanced thermal stability for PMHS-modified resin: the decomposition temperature of Resol–PMHS 5.0% increased to 483 °C (neat resin: 438 °C), and char yield at 800 °C rose to 57% (neat resin: 38%). The 60 wt% GF-reinforced Resol–PMHS 5.0% composite exhibited tensile, flexural, and impact strengths of 145 ± 7 MPa, 160 ± 7 MPa, and 71 ± 5 kJ/m2, respectively, superior to the unmodified resin composite (136 ± 6 MPa, 112 ± 6 MPa, and 51 ± 5 kJ/m2). SEM observations indicated improved fiber–matrix interfacial adhesion and reduced delamination. These results demonstrate that PMHS modification effectively enhances the thermo-mechanical properties of the PF resin and its composites, highlighting potential for industrial applications. Tread braking is still extensively used on freight wagons due to lower purchasing and maintenance costs compared to disk braking. Cast iron brake blocks were replaced by composite materials (organic or sintered) that result in a lower wheel roughness, reducing rolling noise. Unfortunately, composite brake blocks have a lower thermal conductivity, negatively affecting the wheel mechanical behavior as the braking energy is almost entirely dissipated by the wheels, which are therefore subjected to higher temperatures. Mechanical properties of the wheel material, such as yield stress and Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF) behavior, markedly decrease with temperature, resulting in higher wear rates and wheel tread damage. Contacted to analyze defects not clearly defined in the current regulations used for maintenance and inspections, the authors surveyed the literature and the technical documentation about tread-braked wheels. The paper provides an updated view about the state-of-the-art of the research on thermomechanical behavior of railway wheels and discusses the implication of the increased thermal stresses generated by composite brake blocks. This study presents a novel method for producing extrudable alginate-based films using continuous thermo-mechanical mixing, providing a scalable alternative to conventional solvent-casting techniques. The effects of glycerol concentration (30–50 wt%) and processing temperature (110–120 °C) on the films’ thermal, mechanical, and structural properties were systematically investigated. Structural characterization was performed using 1H NMR and FT-IR, and thermal transitions were analyzed via DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis). The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the alginate/glycerol/water system was modeled using the Gordon–Taylor equation. Glycerol incorporation significantly reduced Tg—by up to 76 °C with 40 wt% glycerol—and enhanced ductility and toughness, reaching 3.26 MJ/m3 at the optimal level. The influence of processing temperature was found to depend on plasticizer content: at lower glycerol levels, elevated temperatures decreased Tg and elongation at break, likely due to thermal degradation. However, films with higher glycerol content retained stable mechanical and thermal behavior across both temperature profiles. This work is among the first to explore how processing temperature affects extruded, plasticized pure alginate films. The findings provide key insights into the formulation and scalable production of bio-based packaging materials, highlighting the importance of optimizing both plasticizer concentration and processing parameters.
