Effective studying is important to learn better and increase academic achievement in postsecondary education, which also holds true for the challenging content of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Informed by previous research, this study mainly aimed to investigate first-year STEM college students’ study habits and perceptions of the effectiveness of different study strategies, and the frequency of use of these strategies. To this end, this study employed a cross-sectional survey using the Prolific platform. The results revealed that participants use various study strategies, including more and less effective ones, generally do not study in a planned way nor believe that learning takes hard work, and also prioritize approaching deadlines. The results also showed that the participants (a) frequently use the study strategies that they think are effective, suggesting that perceived effectiveness can have an important role in students’ strategy choice, and (b) mostly use study strategies for studying only or for both studying and while learning for fun. However, the frequency of the use of strategies partially aligned with the perceived effectiveness of the strategies. Overall, these results suggest the need to further investigate the conditions under which college students find study strategies effective, which can affect their choices. Full article

The integration of Lesson Study (LS) and Didactic Suitability Criteria (DSC) presents an innovative framework for enhancing mathematics teacher training in higher education. This study examines how LS-DSC fosters instructional refinement, professional growth, and pedagogical transformation among in-service teachers. Using a quasi-experimental mixed-methods approach, the study analyzed data from 520 mathematics educators participating in a six-month training program incorporating collaborative lesson planning, structured pedagogical assessment, and reflective teaching practices. Findings indicate significant improvements in instructional design, mathematical discourse facilitation, and adaptive teaching strategies, with post-training evaluations demonstrating a strong positive correlation (r = 0.78) between initial competency levels and learning gains. Participants reported increased confidence in implementing student-centered methodologies and sustained engagement in peer collaboration beyond the training period. The results align with prior research emphasizing the effectiveness of lesson study models and structured evaluation frameworks in teacher professionalization. This study contributes to higher education policy and practice by advocating for the institutional adoption of LS-DSC methodologies to promote evidence-based professional development. Future research should explore the long-term scalability of LS-DSC in diverse educational contexts and its impact on student learning outcomes. Full article

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is envisioned to revolutionize urban transportation by improving traffic efficiency and mitigating surface-level congestion. One of the fundamental challenges in implementing UAM systems lies in the optimal siting of vertiports, which requires a delicate balance among infrastructure construction costs, passenger access costs to their assigned vertiports, and the operational connectivity of the resulting vertiport network. This study develops an integrated mathematical model for vertiport location decision, aiming to minimize total system cost while ensuring UAM network connectivity among the selected vertiport locations. To efficiently solve the problem and improve solution quality, a hybrid genetic algorithm is developed by incorporating a Minimum Spanning Tree (MST)-based connectivity enforcement mechanism, a fundamental concept in graph theory that connects all nodes in a given network with minimal total link cost, enhanced by a greedy initialization strategy. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through numerical experiments conducted on both synthetic datasets and the real-world transportation network of New York City. The results show that the proposed hybrid methodology not only yields high-quality solutions but also significantly reduces computational time, enabling faster convergence. Overall, this study provides practical insights for UAM infrastructure planning by emphasizing demand-oriented vertiport siting and inter-vertiport connectivity, thereby contributing to both theoretical development and large-scale implementation in complex urban environments. Axis definition plays a key role in the establishment of animal body plans, both in normal development and regeneration. The cnidarian Hydra can re-establish its simple body plan when regenerating from a random cell aggregate or a sufficiently small tissue fragment. At the beginning of regeneration, a hollow cellular spheroid forms, which then undergoes symmetry breaking and de novo body axis definition. In the past, we have published related work in a physics journal, which is difficult to read for scientists from other disciplines. Here, we review our work for readers not so familiar with this type of approach at a level that requires very little knowledge in mathematics. At the same time, we present a few aspects of Hydra biology that we believe to be linked to our work. These biological aspects may be of interest to physicists or members of related disciplines to better understand our approach. The proposed theoretical model is based on fluctuations of gene expression that are triggered by mechanical signaling, leading to increasingly large groups of cells acting in sync. With a single free parameter, the model quantitatively reproduces the experimentally observed expression pattern of the gene ks1, a marker for ‘head forming potential’. We observed that Hydra positions its axis as a function of a weak temperature gradient, but in a non-intuitive way. Supposing that a large fluctuation including ks1 expression is locked to define the head position, the model reproduces this behavior as well—without further changes. We explain why we believe that the proposed fluctuation-based symmetry breaking process agrees well with recent experimental findings where actin filament organization or anisotropic mechanical stimulation act as axis-positioning events. The model suggests that the Hydra spheroid exhibits huge sensitivity to external perturbations that will eventually position the axis. Full article

Mathematical modeling and computer visualization of hazardous zones of toxic substance cloud spread that occur during different accidents at industrial enterprises located near residential areas are in high demand to support the operational planning of evacuation measures and accident response. The possible chain-like nature of fires and explosions of containers with toxic substances inside increases the importance of predicting changes in hazardous zone parameters in real time. The objective of this study is to develop algorithms for the development of a mathematical model of a hazardous zone during an explosion and fire at an enterprise. The subject of this study is a software tool created for the visualization of hazardous substance emission zones in real time, superimposed onto a development map to determine potential damage to human health and for the operational planning of evacuation measures. The proposed model takes into account variables such as the air temperature, wind speed and direction, the mass of the substance at each explosion and fire site, etc. C# and Visual Studio 2022 languages and an SQL database were used to create a software tool for visualizing the hazardous area. The testing of the calculation model and software used for the visualization of the hazardous zones of toxic substance cloud spread are presented on the basis of explosion cases involving a railway tank containing ammonia and the combustion of polyvinyl chloride at a chemical industry enterprise. The results confirmed the operability of the software and the prospects of its use in regard to the mitigation of the consequences of human-made accidents. Full article

Metacognition and self-regulated learning are widely understood to offer significant benefits for pupils’ mathematical problem solving; however, the existing literature highlights that the under-representation of these concepts in curriculum, policy, and teacher professional development means that their potential for impact remains unfulfilled. This article, therefore, examines the potential value of an innovative fading professional development programme—“Stepping Stones”—in enhancing teachers’ understanding and use of metacognitive strategies for mathematical problem solving. Adopting a convergent mixed methods design, this pilot evaluation involved Year 2 teachers across five primary schools. The results from both qualitative and quantitative data demonstrate that, as the scaffolding provided by programme materials faded and teachers assumed greater responsibility for session planning, they incorporated metacognitive strategies into their planning and delivery with increased independence. The results also indicate the acceptability of this professional development model, suggesting that, when combined with peer collaboration, the fading design was associated with improvements in knowledge and confidence regarding both metacognition and mathematical problem solving, alongside increased ownership and buy in. The conclusions advocate further examination and implementation of fading models of professional development to promote the understanding and use of metacognition for mathematical problem solving and recommend exploration into different professional development contexts. In the present era, achieving sustainability requires the development of planning strategies to develop a safer urban infrastructure. This study examines the realistic aspects of cyclist safety by analysing cyclists’ fields of view, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data analysis. The research introduces novel geoprocessing tools-based GIS techniques that mathematically simulate cyclists’ angles of view and the distances to nearby environmental features. It provides precise insights into some potential hazards and infrastructure challenges encountered while cycling. This research focuses on managing and analysing the data collected, utilising OpenStreetMap (OSM) as vector-based supporting data. It integrates cyclists’ behavioural data with the urban environmental features encountered, such as intersections, road design, and traffic controls. The analysis is categorised into specific classes to evaluate the impacts of these aspects of the environment on cyclists’ behaviours. The current investigation highlights the importance of integrating the objective environmental elements surrounding the route with subjective perceptions and then determining the influence of these environmental elements on cyclists’ behaviours. Unlike previous studies that ignore cyclists’ visual perspectives in the context of real-world data, this work integrates objective GIS data with cyclists’ field of view-based modelling to identify high-risk areas and highlight the need for enhanced safety measures. The proposed approach equips urban planners and designers with data-informed strategies for creating safer cycling infrastructure, fostering sustainable mobility, and mitigating urban congestion. Hydrogen is widely recognized as a versatile energy carrier with significant potential to support the decarbonization of the power, transport, and industrial sectors. This paper analyzes the integration of hydrogen into power systems and offers an overview of the operation of electrolyzers and fuel cells for readers with limited background in these technologies. Applications of hydrogen beyond the scope of power systems are not considered. Then, this paper explores the mathematical modeling of hydrogen-related technologies, including electrolyzers and fuel cells, to assess their impact on hydrogen production and electricity generation. The paper also reviews recent developments in electricity storage through power-to-gas systems and examines planning models for integrating hydrogen into power systems. Furthermore, the role of hydrogen facilities in power system operations is analyzed in depth. The integration of hydrogen vehicles into power grids is also discussed, emphasizing their diverse applications. Additionally, the paper examines the production of ammonia, which can be used as a fuel for electricity generation. Finally, the most important conclusions of the literature review are summarized, offering an overview of the main findings and identified research gaps. Full article

The sustainable utilization of forest biomass for bioenergy production is increasingly challenged by the variability and unpredictability of raw material availability. These challenges are particularly critical in regions like Central Portugal, where seasonality, dispersed resources, and wildfire prevention policies disrupt procurement planning. This study investigates two flexibility strategies—dynamic network reconfiguration and operations postponement—as policy relevant tools to enhance resilience in forest-to-bioenergy supply chains. A novel mathematical model, the mobile Facility Location Problem with dynamic Operations Assignment (mFLP-dOA), is proposed and solved using a scalable matheuristic approach. Applying the model to a real case study, we demonstrate that incorporating temporary intermediate nodes and adaptable processing schedules can reduce costs by up to 17% while improving operational responsiveness and reducing non-productive machine time. The findings offer strategic insights for policymakers, biomass operators, and regional planners aiming to design more adaptive and cost-effective biomass supply systems, particularly under environmental risk scenarios such as summer operation bans. This work supports evidence-based planning and investment in flexible logistics infrastructure for cleaner and more resilient bioenergy supply chains. Full article

This paper presents an energy-optimized path planning approach for fully actuated autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in three-dimensional ocean environments to enhance their operational range and endurance. A fully actuated AUV is characterized by its high degrees of freedom and precise controllability. Using real terrain data, we construct environmental models incorporating a Lamb vortex and random obstacles. We develop a mathematical model of the AUV’s total energy consumption, accounting for constraints imposed by its fully actuated design and extensive maneuverability. To minimize energy usage, we propose an energy-optimized path planning algorithm that combines energy-optimized particle swarm optimization (EOPSO) and sequential quadratic programming (SQP). The proposed method identifies the optimal path for energy consumption and the corresponding optimal surge speed. The efficacy of the algorithm in optimizing the total energy consumption of the AUV is demonstrated through the simulation of various scenarios. In comparison to other algorithms, paths planned by this algorithm are shown to have superior robustness and optimized energy consumption. Full article

Path planning is crucial for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and plays a vital role in ocean engineering. To improve the search efficiency and accuracy, this study proposed a three-dimensional path-planning method for AUVs based on the interval multi-objective secretary bird optimization algorithm (IMOSBOA). This method addressed path-planning challenges under imprecise current predictions and uncertain hazard source locations. First, the marine environment was modeled in three dimensions using the interval theory. Second, the danger levels and navigation times were set as the optimization objectives to construct a three-dimensional path-planning mathematical model. Finally, IMOSBOA was proposed and applied to solve the optimization problem. To verify the optimization performance of the new algorithm, its planning results were compared with those of the other algorithms. The simulation results demonstrated that the robustness and search capability of the proposed algorithm surpass those of comparative algorithms. Full article

This paper addresses the critical need for detailed electricity and peak power demand maps for urban public transportation vehicles. Current approaches often rely on overly general assumptions, leading to considerable errors in specific applications or, conversely, overly specific measurements that limit generalisability. We aim to present a comprehensive data-driven methodology for analysing energy consumption within a large urban agglomeration. The method leverages a unique and extensive set of real-world performance data, collected over two years from onboard recorders on all public bus lines in the Capital City of Warsaw. This large dataset enables a robust probabilistic analysis, ensuring high accuracy of the results. For this study, three representative bus lines were selected. The approach involves isolating inter-stop trips, for which instantaneous power waveforms and energy consumption are determined using classical mathematical models of vehicle drive systems. The extracted data for these sections is then characterised using probability distributions. This methodology provides accurate calculation results for specific operating conditions and allows for generalisation with additional factors like air conditioning or heating. The direct result of this paper is a detailed urban map of energy demand and peak power for public transport vehicles. Such a map is invaluable for planning new traffic routes, verifying existing ones regarding energy consumption, and providing a reliable input source for strategic charger deployment analysis along the route. The scheduling of carrier-based aircraft departure operations is subject to stringent temporal, spatial, and resource constraints. Conventional approaches struggle to yield exact solutions or provide a comprehensive mathematical description of this complex, dynamic process. This study proposes a simulation-based optimization method, establishing a high-fidelity simulation model for aircraft departure scheduling. To address the coupled challenges of path planning under spatial constraints and station matching/sequencing under operational constraints, we developed (1) a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based path planning algorithm (AAE-SAC), and (2) an enhanced particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm (LTA-HPSO). This integrated two-stage framework, termed LTA-HPSO + AAE-SAC, facilitates efficient, collision-free departure scheduling optimization. Simulation experiments across varying sortie scales were conducted to validate the framework’s effectiveness and robustness. Notably, for a complex scenario involving 24 aircraft with diverse priorities and stringent spatial constraints, LTA-HPSO + AAE-SAC achieved an average solution time of 185.19 s, reducing scheduling time by 26.18% and 49.54% compared to benchmark algorithms (PSO + Heuristic and PSO + SAC, respectively). The proposed LTA-HPSO + AAE-SAC framework significantly enhances the quality and robustness of carrier-based aircraft departure scheduling. Full article

This paper proposes the generalized modified unstable nonlinear Schrödinger’s equation with applications in modulated wavetrain instabilities. The extended direct algebra and generalized Ricatti equation methods are applied to find innovative soliton solutions to the equation. The solutions are obtained in the form of elliptic, hyperbolic, and trigonometric functions. Moreover, a Galilean transformation is used to convert the problem into a dynamical system. We use the theory of planar dynamical systems to derive the equilibrium points of the dynamical system and analyze the Hamiltonian polynomial. We further investigate the bifurcation phase portrait of the system and study its chaotic behaviors when an external force is applied to the system. Graphical 2D and 3D plots are explored to support our mathematical analysis. A sensitivity analysis confirms that the variation in initial conditions has no substantial effect on the stability of the solutions. Furthermore, we give the modulation instability gain spectrum of the considered model and graphically indicate its dynamics using 2D plots. The reported results demonstrate not only the dynamics of the analyzed equation but are also conceptually relevant in establishing the temporal development of modest disturbances in stable or unstable media. These disturbances will be critical for anticipating, planning treatments, and creating novel mechanisms for modulated wavetrain instabilities. Full article

This study provides a comprehensive overview of watershed hydrology and mathematical models, focusing on its hydrological features and the implementation of hydrological modeling for effective water resource modeling and assessment, planning, and management. The study presents a thorough review of the primary transport mechanisms of water within a watershed, particularly the river network, and examines its physical and stochastic characteristics. It also discusses the derivation of governing equations for various hydrological processes within a watershed, including evaluating their applicability in the context of watershed modeling. Additionally, this research reviews the generation of hydrologic flux from rainfall events within a watershed and its subsequent routing through overland flow and channel networks. Furthermore, the study examines commonly utilized statistical distributions and methods in watershed hydrology, emphasizing their implications for watershed modeling. Finally, this research evaluates various mathematical models used in watershed processes modeling, highlighting their respective advantages and disadvantages in the context of water resource management studies.
