Pharmaceutical residues, including a wide range of therapeutic drugs, have been increasingly reported in drinking water sources worldwide, raising environmental concerns due to their potential impact on aquatic ecosystems. Among the available treatment approaches, adsorption has emerged as one of the most reliable methods for eliminating these pollutants. In the present study, metformin was effectively removed from water using a nanocomposite adsorbent consisting of copper nanoparticles anchored onto magnetic chitosan (Cu@MCS). The removal of metformin by Cu@MCS was governed by several mechanisms: surface complexation with copper species, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic associations between the drug’s methyl groups and magnetite, and hydrogen bonding between metformin’s amino groups and oxygenated functional groups of chitosan. The structural and surface properties of the nanocomposite were characterized through FTIR, XPS, XRD, SEM, and HRTEM analyses. Key experimental factors, such as initial drug concentration, contact time, pH, and ionic strength, were systematically optimized to maximize adsorption efficiency. Adsorption data closely followed the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum capacity (qm;) of 52.91 mg·g−1 at 298 K. Regeneration tests demonstrated excellent reusability, showing only a 3.7% decline in performance after six adsorption–desorption cycles. The Cu@MCS material also proved effective in removing metformin from diverse real water samples, including river water, wastewater, bottled water, and tap water. A notable advantage of this nanosorbent is its magnetic separability, which enables straightforward recovery from solution, even at low contaminant levels and with large sample volumes. These results underline the potential of magnetic chitosan-based nanocomposites as fast, efficient, and reusable adsorbents for the removal of pharmaceutical contaminants from aquatic systems. In this work, we revisited the method of effervescence-assisted microextraction, aiming to assess the effects of the process of effervescence on the extraction efficiency of organic compounds. We used a magnetic nano-sorbent material composed of stearic acid-coated cobalt-ferrite magnetic nanoparticles as an adsorbent and dispersed it in water using 12 combinations of acid and base mixtures at two different mass ratios. The solution pH, the ionic strength, and the duration of effervescence were calculated and correlated to the extraction efficiency of nonpolar UV filters from aqueous samples as model organic compounds. Our findings provide a general perspective into the influence of the process of effervescence on extraction efficiency. Based on these findings, we developed and optimized a new analytical method for extracting UV filters from water samples using HPLC-UV as a detector. Under the optimum experimental conditions (0.2 g fumaric acid/0.1 g Na2CO3, 50 mg of magnetic nanoparticles and methanol as an elution solvent assisted by vortex agitation for 5 min) the method was found to afford good linearity in the calibration curves expanding by two orders of magnitude, satisfactory reproducibility and repeatability (1.8–11.1%), and high recoveries (78.4–127.1%). This research provides a new perspective on the influence of the process of effervescence on the extraction efficiency of nonpolar organic compounds and introduces a new method for extracting UV filters from aqueous media. Microplastics contamination is growing globally, being a risk for different environmental compartments including animals and humans. At present, some Spanish beaches and coasts have been affected by discharges of these pollutants, which have caused a serious environmental problem. Therefore, efficient strategies to remove microplastics (MPs) from environmental samples are needed. In this study, the application of three magnetic materials, namely iron oxide (Fe3O4) and the composites Fe3O4@Ag and Fe3O4@Ag@L-Cysteine, to remove MPs, specifically polystyrene (PS), from water samples has been assessed. The magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized by field effect scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy detection (FESEM-EDX). Experimental conditions such as temperature, time, and pH during the removal process were assessed for the different adsorbent materials. The removal rate was calculated by filtering the treated water samples and counting the remaining MPs in the water using ImageJ software. The strongest removal efficiency (100%) was shown using Fe3O4@Ag@L-Cysteine for PS at 50 mg L−1 within 15 min of the separation process at room temperature and a neutral pH. A thermodynamic study demonstrated that the developed MPs elimination strategy was a spontaneous and physisorption process. Coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were demonstrated to be an efficient adsorbent for MP removal in aquatic environments and their use a promising technique for the control of MPs contamination. Magnetic nanosorbents efficiently capture substances, particularly basic dyes, and can be easily recovered using a magnetic field in water treatment. Adsorption is a cost-effective and highly efficient method for basic dye removal. This study compared eight nonlinear kinetic adsorption models using Microsoft Excel 2023, which provided a detailed analysis and statistical results comparable to advanced programs like MATLAB and OriginPro. The Fractal Like-Pseudo First Order (FL-PFO) model showed the best fit for the kinetic adsorption model, closely predicting experimental data at 33.09 mg g−1. This suggests that the diffusion rate of basic dye within the magnetic nanosorbent pores is a crucial factor. The statistical parameters confirmed the suitability of these kinetic adsorption models for describing the observed behavior. Overall, Microsoft Excel emerged as a reliable tool for predicting adsorption behavior using various kinetic models for basic dye removal, offering a wide range of functions for diverse applications, including environmental monitoring and modeling. Corrected Akaike’s information criterion was used to determine the optimal model. It found the lowest AICcorrected value of about −3.8479 for the FL-PFO kinetic model, while the Elovich kinetic adsorption model had the highest AICcorrected value of 29.6605. This indicates that the FL-PFO kinetic model effectively correlated the kinetic data. It can be concluded that Microsoft Excel’s accessibility, familiarity, and broad range of capabilities make it a valuable resource for many aspects of environmental engineering. Full article

Superparamagnetic magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs, Fe3O4) were first synthesized based on a chemical co–precipitation method, and the core–shell magnetic silica nanoparticles (MSNPs, Fe3O4@SiO2) were obtained via hydrolysis and the condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate onto Fe3O4 seed using a sol–gel process. Following that, MSNPs were immobilized using a three–step grafting strategy, where 8-hloroacetyl–aminoquinoline (CAAQ) was employed as a metal ion affinity ligand for trapping specific heavy metal ions, and a macromolecular polymer (polyethylenimine (PEI)) was selected as a bridge between the surface hydroxyl group and CAAQ to fabricate a network of organic networks onto the MSNPs’ surface. The as–synthesized MSNPs–CAAQ nanocomposites possessed abundant active functional groups and thus contained excellent removal features for heavy metal ions. Specifically, the maximum adsorption capacities at room temperature and without adjusting pH were 324.7, 306.8, and 293.3 mg/g for Fe3+, Cu2+, and Cr3+ ions, respectively, according to Langmuir linear fitting. The adsorption–desorption experiment results indicated that Na2EDTA proved to be more suitable as a desorbing agent for Cr3+ desorption on the MSNPs–CAAQ surface than HCl and HNO3. MSNPs–CAAQ exhibited a satisfactory adsorption capacity toward Cr3+ ions even after six consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles; the adsorption efficiency for Cr3+ ions was still 88.8% with 0.1 mol/L Na2EDTA as the desorbing agent. Furthermore, the MSNPs–CAAQ nanosorbent displayed a strong magnetic response with a saturated magnetization of 24.0 emu/g, and they could be easily separated from the aqueous medium under the attraction of a magnet, which could facilitate the sustainable removal of Cr3+ ions in practical applications. Phosphorus (P) management in the “water-energy-resource-nexus” in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) remains a longstanding challenge. P adsorption from the P-enriched digested sludge liquor (DSL) is a comparatively more practical and economically viable approach for P recovery in WWTPs. However, high concentrations of impurities in DSL might pose a negative and interferential effect on P adsorption, hindering the application of sorbents or precipitation methods. Given such a situation, highly efficient and cost-effective sorbent towards P reclamation from DSL is highly needed. Therefore, this study aims to develop a novel complex agent containing aluminum coagulant and superparamagnetic nano-sorbent (SNS) that can be used in magnetic seeding coagulation for P recovery. The complex agents with different PACl: SNS ratios showed varied turbidity removal rates and P recovery efficiencies and the optimal ratio was 15 mg PACl: 15 g SNS. PAC and SNS showed significant interaction because PAC could enhance P adsorption by shielding the interferential effect of colloidal impurities. In addition, the complex is highly regenerative, with turbidity and P removal rate stably maintained at 70–80% after 10 adsorption/regeneration cycles. The cost–benefit analysis of the dosing complex agent showed a dosing cost of 0.154 EUR/m3, admittedly much higher than the conventional magnetic seeding coagulation, which could probably be covered by the profit if the expensive and rare P product is reclaimed. This work indicated that the complex agent was superior due to its high adsorption capacity, easy separation, and repeated dosing, and therefore had the potential for P recovery from DSL. New magnetic nanocomposite sorbents were obtained by doping natural bentonite with nanosized CoFe2O4 spinel (10 and 20 wt.%). Nanocrystals of cobalt ferrite were synthesized by a citrate burning method. The structure and physical-chemical properties of the composites were characterized by XRD, XRF, TEM, BET, FTIR and Faraday balance magnetometry. During the formation of nanocomposites, 10–30 nm particles of cobalt ferrite occupied mainly the interparticle space of Fe-aluminosilicate that significantly changed the particle morphology and composite porosity, but at the same time retained the structure of the 2:1 smectite layer. A combination of two functional properties of composites, adsorption and magnetism has been found. The adsorption capacity of magnetic nanosorbents exceeded this parameter for bentonite and spinel. Despite the decrease in the adsorption volume, pore size and specific surface area of the composite material relative to bentonite, the sorption activity of the composite increases by 12%, which indicated the influence of the magnetic component on the sorption process. FTIR data confirmed the mechanism of formaldehyde sorption by the composite sorbent. The production of a magnetic nanosorbent opens up new possibilities for controlling the sorption processes and makes it possible to selectively separate the sorbent from the adsorption medium by the action of a magnetic field. Nucleic acid extraction and purification are crucial steps in sample preparation for multiple diagnostic procedures. Routine methodologies of DNA isolation require benchtop equipment (e.g., centrifuges) and labor-intensive steps. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as solid-phase sorbents could simplify this procedure. A wide range of surface coatings employs various molecular interactions between dsDNA and magnetic nano-sorbents. However, a reliable, comparative evaluation of their performance is complex. In this work, selected Fe3O4 modifications, i.e., polyethyleneimine, gold, silica, and graphene derivatives, were comprehensively evaluated for applications in dsDNA extraction. A family of single batch nanoparticles was compared in terms of morphology (STEM), composition (ICP-MS/MS and elemental analysis), surface coating (UV-Vis, TGA, FTIR), and MNP charge (ζ-potential). ICP-MS/MS was also used to unify MNPs concentration allowing a reliable assessment of individual coatings on DNA extraction. Moreover, studies on adsorption medium (monovalent vs. divalent ions) and extraction buffer composition were carried out. As a result, essential relationships between nanoparticle coatings and DNA adsorption efficiencies have been noticed. Fe3O4@PEI MNPs turned out to be the most efficient nano sorbents. The optimized composition of the extraction buffer (medium containing 0.1 mM EDTA) helped avoid problems with Fe3+ stripping, which improved the validity of the spectroscopic determination of DNA recovery. Boron is a special pollutant. Because of its relatively small molecular weight, it can freely penetrate the reverse osmosis membrane in the same way that water molecules can in reverse osmosis during seawater desalination, which affects the effluent quality of desalinated seawater. In this study, a new magnetic adsorption material, MNP-NMDG, was synthesized by combining magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) of Fe3O4 with N-methyl-d-glucamine with a high selectivity to boron, and MNP-NMDG was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The adsorption properties of the MNP-NMDG for boron during seawater desalination under static and dynamic conditions was studied from the aspects of pH, adsorbent dosage, adsorption kinetics, and isotherms. The results showed that according to the breakthrough curve of dynamic adsorption, MNP-NMDG had a high boron-adsorption capacity, and the static adsorption capacity was 9.21 mg/g. The adsorption performance was the best at pH = 9, and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 40 min. Boron adsorption conformed to the Freundlich adsorption isotherm and to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. This composite material not only provides an effective and rapid way to remove boron from desalinated seawater, but also has a shorter removal time and makes it more easily separated using the external magnetic field. In this research, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were functionalized by oxidation with strong acids HNO3, H2SO4, and H2O2. Then, magnetite/MWCNTs nanocomposites were prepared and polystyrene was added to prepare polystyrene/MWCNTs/magnetite (PS:MWCNTs:Fe) nanocomposites. The magnetic property of the prepared nano-adsorbent PS:MWCNTs:Fe was successfully checked. For characterization, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and BET surface area were used to determine the structure, morphology, chemical nature, functional groups, and surface area with pore volume of the prepared nano-adsorbents. The adsorption procedures were carried out for fresh MWCNTs, oxidized MWCNTs, MWCNTs-Fe, and PS:MWCNTs:Fe nanocomposites in batch experiments. Toluene standard was used to develop the calibration curve. The results of toluene adsorption experiments exhibited that the PS:MWCNTs:Fe nonabsorbent achieved the highest removal efficiency and adsorption capacity of toluene removal. The optimum parameters for toluene removal from water were found to be 60 min, 2 mg nano-sorbent dose, pH of 5, solution temperature of 35 °C at 50 mL volume, toluene concentration of 50 mg/L, and shaking speed of 240 rpm. The adsorption kinetic study of toluene followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics, with the best correlation (R2) value of 0.998, while the equilibrium adsorption study showed that the Langmuir isotherm was obeyed, which suggested that the adsorption is a monolayer and homogenous. This article reports effective removal of methylene blue (MB) dyes from aqueous solutions using a novel magnetic polymer nanocomposite. The core-shell structured nanosorbents was fabricated via coating Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a layer of hydrogel material, that synthesized by carboxymethyl cellulose cross-linked with poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide). Some physico-chemical properties of the nanosorbents were characterized by various testing methods. The nanosorbent could be easily separated from aqueous solutions by an external magnetic field and the mass fraction of outer hydrogel shell was 20.3 wt%. The adsorption performance was investigated as the effects of solution pH, adsorbent content, initial dye concentration, and contact time. The maximum adsorption capacity was obtained at neutral pH of 7 with a sorbent dose of 1.5 g L−1. The experimental data of MB adsorption were fit to Langmuir isotherm model and Pseudo-second-order kinetic model with maximum adsorption of 34.3 mg g−1. XPS technique was applied to study the mechanism of adsorption, electrostatic attraction and physically adsorption may control the adsorption behavior of the composite nanosorbents. In addition, a good reusability of 83.5% MB recovering with adsorption capacity decreasing by 16.5% over five cycles of sorption/desorption was observed. Full article

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most common pharmaceuticals used worldwide. They are widely detected in natural waters due to their persistence in wastewater treatment, and their removal is desirable in wastewater management. As a contribution to tackle this challenge, this study explores magnetic quaternary chitosan-based nanosorbents for the effective magnetically assisted removal of three NSAIDs (diclofenac, naproxen, and ketoprofen) from water. Toward this goal, silane groups were grafted onto the backbone of trimethyl chitosan through the reaction with an epoxide functionalized silane. Once silanized, the modified chitosan was employed to coat Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The prepared materials were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy and solid-state 29Si and 13C NMR spectroscopy, which confirmed the encapsulation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a hybrid siliceous material enriched in trimethyl chitosan. The effect of the initial NSAIDs concentration, pH, and contact time in the adsorption behavior was investigated. The kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating a chemisorption mechanism. The maximum adsorption capacities estimated from the Langmuir model were 188.5 mg/g (0.5925 mmol/g), 438.1 mg/g (1.7371 mmol/g), and 221.5 mg/g (0.8710 mmol/g) for diclofenac, naproxen, and ketoprofen, respectively. These adsorption capacities are higher than those of most reported sorbents, indicating the potential of these biosorbents to remove the selected NSAIDs using low-energy magnetically assisted separation. The sorption of basic dyes onto magnetic nanosorbent is commonly used as a novel material to combat powdered activated carbon, which is difficult to handle and separate during water and wastewater treatment. This adsorption method is commonly implemented in water and wastewater treatment due to its low cost and high performance. To explore the feasibility of adsorption, six different nonlinear isotherm models were applied and introduced to evaluate the performance and adsorption mechanisms via Microsoft Excel, and they were then compared to those of MATLAB and OriginPro. The Langmuir best provided the sorption of methylene blue adsorbed for a two-parameter isotherm model. The three-parameter model Toth gave a goodness of fit indicating a heterogeneous sorbent surface. Error function analysis found that the Residual Sum of Squares Error, Chi-square, Coefficient of determination, Average Relative Error, Hybrid Fractional Error Function, Marquardt’s Percent Standard Deviation and Root Mean Square Error provided the best overall results. In comparison, it could be concluded that six isotherm models showed the confidence interval that is simply the best fit at all experimental data points provided by the three software tools. All error function results indicated that the Microsoft Excel Solver function spreadsheet method satisfied all the statistic measures to predict the real variance of the probability of experimental data for all six isotherm models of adsorption of basic dye removal. One added benefit of this Microsoft Excel software tool is the built-in function associated with the desired type of application, which designates the desired type of error/statistical functions not mentioned in this research to the adsorbent materials used. We report in the present study the in situ formation of magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4 or Fe) within porous N-doped carbon (Fe3O4/N@C) via simple impregnation, polymerization, and calcination sequentially. The synthesized nanocomposite structural properties were investigated using different techniques showing its good construction. The formed nanocomposite showed a saturation magnetization (Ms) of 23.0 emu g−1 due to the implanted magnetic nanoparticles and high surface area from the porous N-doped carbon. The nanocomposite was formed as graphite-type layers. The well-synthesized nanocomposite showed a high adsorption affinity toward Pb2+ toxic ions. The nanosorbent showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 250.0 mg/g toward the Pb2+ metallic ions at pH of 5.5, initial Pb2+ concentration of 180.0 mg/L, and room temperature. Due to its superparamagnetic characteristics, an external magnet was used for the fast separation of the nanocomposite. This enabled the study of the nanocomposite reusability toward Pb2+ ions, showing good chemical stability even after six cycles. Subsequently, Fe3O4/N@C nanocomposite was shown to have excellent efficiency for the removal of toxic Pb2+ ions from water. Full article

The removal of heavy metals from water has become a global environmental problem. Various materials have been applied as adsorbent to remove metals from water. In this field, nanomaterials have been gaining increasing interest due to their exceptional properties. In this work, we discuss the synthesis of a core-shell structure nanocomposite by the modification of magnetic chitosan (CS) (Fe3O4/CS) with polyethylenimine (PEI) to produce Fe3O4/CS/PEI composite for the adsorption of arsenic ions (As(V) and As(III)) from aqueous solution. The synthesized materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results indicated the successful combination of three components of the nanocomposite. The adsorption conditions were optimized by studying the effect of different parameters included pH, contact time, initial concentration, and adsorbent dosage. The optimum adsorption pH was found to be 6.7 while the optimum adsorbent dosage was found to be 2.0 and 1.5 g/L for As(III) and As(V), respectively. The removal efficiency for the uptake of As(III) and As(V) ions over Fe3O4/CS/PEI nanocomposite at optimum conditions was found to be 99.5 and 99.7%, respectively. The experimental results were fitted using Freundlich’s and Langmuir’s isotherms. The data were more fitted to Langmuir isotherm providing a suggestion of monolayer adsorption with maximum adsorption capacity equal to 77.61 and 86.50 mg/g for the removal of As(III) and As(V), respectively. Moreover, linear regression coefficient (R2) indicated that the adsorption of arsenic ions over the synthesized magnetic nanocomposite obeyed pseudo 2nd order suggesting the chemisorption process. The reusability of the nanosorbent for arsenic uptake using sodium hydroxide as eluent was also assessed up to five cycles. Interestingly, Fe3O4/CS/PEI nanocomposite can be considered as a promising adsorbent for As ions’ removal from water and should be tested for the removal of other pollutants. Full article
