Electromagnetic and magnetic devices are increasingly prevalent in sectors such as transportation, industry, and renewable energy due to the ongoing electrification trend. These devices exhibit nonlinear behavior, particularly under signals rich in harmonics. They require precise and appropriate modeling for accurate sizing. Identifying model-specific parameters, which depend on frequency, is crucial. This article focuses on a specific frequency range where a circuit model with series resistance and inductance, along with a parallel resistance to account for iron losses (Riron), is applicable. While the determination of series elements is well documented, the determination of Riron remains complex and debated, with traditional methods neglecting operating conditions such as magnetic saturation. To address these limitations, an innovative experimental method is proposed, comprising two main steps: determining the complex impedance of the magnetic device and extracting Riron from the model. This method aims to provide a more precise and representative estimation of Riron, improving the reliability and accuracy of electromagnetic and magnetic device simulations and designs. The obtained values of the iron loss equivalent resistance are different by at least 300% than those obtained by an impedance analyzer. The proposed method is expected to advance the understanding and modeling of losses in electromagnetic and magnetic devices, offering more robust tools for engineers and researchers in optimizing device performance and efficiency. Measuring weak magnetic fields proposes significant challenges to the sensing capabilities of magnetic field sensors. The magnetic field detection capacity of tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensors is often insufficient for such applications, necessitating targeted optimization strategies to improve their performance in weak-field measurements. Utilizing magnetic flux concentrators (MFCs) offers an effective approach to enhance TMR sensitivity. In this study, the finite element method was employed to analyze the effects of different MFC geometric structures on the uniformity of the magnetic field in the air gap and the magnetic circuit gain (MCG). It was determined that the MCG of the MFC is not directly related to the absolute values of its parameters but rather to their ratios. Simulation analyses evaluated the impact of these parameter ratios on both the MCG and its spatial distribution uniformity, leading to the formulation of MFC design optimization principles. Building on these simulation-derived principles, several MFCs were fabricated using the 1J85 material, and an experimental platform was established to validate the simulation findings. The fabricated MFCs achieved an MCG of 7.325 times. Based on the previously developed TMR devices, a detection sensitivity of 2.46 nT/Hz @1Hz was obtained. By optimizing parameter configurations, this work provides theoretical guidance for further enhancing the performance of TMR sensors in magnetic field measurements. Full article

Permanent magnetic couplings provide critical advantages for deep-sea systems through static-sealed, contactless power transmission. However, conventional metallic isolation sleeves incur significant eddy current losses, limiting efficiency and high-speed operation. Limited torque capacities fail to meet the operational demands of harsh marine environments. This study presents a novel permanent magnet coupling featuring a ceramic isolation sleeve engineered for deep-sea cryogenic ammonia submersible pumps. The ceramic sleeve eliminates eddy current losses and provides exceptional corrosion resistance in acidic/alkaline environments. To withstand 3.5 MPa hydrostatic pressure, a 6-mm-thick sleeve necessitates a 10 mm operational air gap, challenging magnetic circuit efficiency. To address this limitation, an improved 3D magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model was developed that explicitly accounts for flux leakage and axial end-effects, enabling the accurate characterization of large air gap fields. Leveraging this model, a Taguchi method-based optimization framework was implemented by balancing key parameters to maximize the torque density. This co-design strategy achieved a 21% increase in torque density, enabling higher torque transfer per unit volume. Experimental validation demonstrated a maximum torque of 920 Nm, with stable performance under simulated deep-sea conditions. This design establishes a new paradigm for high-power leak-free transmission in corrosive, high-pressure marine environments, advancing applications from deep-sea propulsion to offshore energy systems. Inter-turn short-circuit (ITSC) faults in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) present a significant reliability challenge in electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains, particularly under non-stationary operating conditions characterized by inverter-driven transients, variable loads, and magnetic saturation. Existing diagnostic approaches, including motor current signature analysis (MCSA) and wavelet-based methods, are primarily designed for steady-state conditions and rely on manual feature selection, limiting their applicability in real-time embedded systems. Furthermore, the lack of publicly available, high-fidelity datasets capturing the transient dynamics and nonlinear flux-linkage behaviors of PMSMs under fault conditions poses an additional barrier to developing data-driven diagnostic solutions. To address these challenges, this study introduces a simulation framework that generates a comprehensive dataset using finite element method (FEM) models, incorporating magnetic saturation effects and inverter-driven transients across diverse EV operating scenarios. Time-frequency features extracted via Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) from stator current signals are used to train a Transformer model for automated ITSC fault detection. The Transformer model, leveraging self-attention mechanisms, captures both local transient patterns and long-range dependencies within the time-frequency feature space. This architecture operates without sequential processing, in contrast to recurrent models such as LSTM or RNN models, enabling efficient inference with a relatively low parameter count, which is advantageous for embedded applications. The proposed model achieves 97% validation accuracy on simulated data, demonstrating its potential for real-time PMSM fault detection. Additionally, the provided dataset and methodology contribute to the facilitation of reproducible research in ITSC diagnostics under realistic EV operating conditions. Full article

With their superior switching speed, GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) enable high power density, reduce energy losses, and increase power efficiency in a wide range of applications, such as power electronics, due to their high breakdown voltage. GaN-HEMT devices are subject to long-term reliability due to the self-heating effect and lattice mismatch between the SiC substrate and the GaN. Depletion-mode GaN HEMTs are utilized for radio frequency applications, and this work investigates three wide-bandgap (WBG) GaN HEMT fixed-frequency oscillators with output buffers. The first GaN-on-SiC HEMT oscillator consists of an HEMT amplifier with an LC feedback network. With the supply voltage of 0.8 V, the single-ended GaN oscillator can generate a signal at 8.85 GHz, and it also supplies output power of 2.4 dBm with a buffer supply of 3.0 V. At 1 MHz frequency offset from the carrier, the phase noise is −124.8 dBc/Hz, and the figure of merit (FOM) of the oscillator is −199.8 dBc/Hz. After the previous study, the hot-carrier stressed RF performance of the GaN oscillator is studied, and the oscillator was subject to a drain supply of 8 V for a stressing step time equal to 30 min and measured at the supply voltage of 0.8 V after the step operation for performance benchmark. Stress study indicates the power oscillator with buffer is a good structure for a reliable structure by operating the oscillator core at low supply and the buffer at high supply. The second balanced oscillator can generate a differential signal. The feedback filter consists of a left-handed transmission-line LC network by cascading three unit cells. At a 1 MHz frequency offset from the carrier of 3.818 GHz, the phase noise is −131.73 dBc/Hz, and the FOM of the 2nd oscillator is −188.4 dBc/Hz. High supply voltage operation shows phase noise degradation. The third GaN cross-coupled VCO uses 8-shaped inductors. The VCO uses a pair of drain inductors to improve the Q-factor of the LC tank, and it uses 8-shaped inductors for magnetic coupling noise suppression. At the VCO-core supply of 1.3 V and high buffer supply, the FOM at 6.397 GHz is −190.09 dBc/Hz. This work enhances the design techniques for reliable GaN HEMT oscillators and knowledge to design high-performance circuits. Full article

Aiming at the problems of low thermal analysis efficiency and high computational cost of traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods for modular fault-tolerant permanent magnet synchronous motors (MFT-PMSMs) under complex working conditions, this paper proposes a fast modeling and calculation method of motor temperature field based on a high-efficiency and high-precision network algorithm. In this method, the physical structure of the motor is equivalent to a parameterized network model, and the computational efficiency is significantly improved by model partitioning and Fourth-order Runge Kutta method. The temperature change of the cooling medium is further considered, and the temperature rise change of the motor at different spatial positions is effectively considered. Based on the finite element method (FEM), the space loss distribution under rated, single-phase open circuit and overload conditions is obtained and mapped to the thermal network nodes. Through the transient thermal network solution, the rapid calculation of the temperature rise law of key components such as windings and permanent magnets is realized. The accuracy of the thermal network model was verified by using fluid-structure coupling simulation and prototype test for temperature analysis. This method provides an efficient tool for thermal safety assessment and optimization in the motor fault-tolerant design stage, especially for heat capacity check under extreme conditions and fault modes. In a power transformer short-circuit, transient current and magnetic flux interactions create strong electromagnetic forces that can deform windings and the core, risking failure. Accurate calculation of these forces during design is critical to prevent such outcomes. This paper employs two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) finite-element analysis (FEA) to model a 110 kV, 40 MVA three-phase transformer, calculating magnetic flux density, short-circuit current, and electromagnetic forces. The difference in force values at inner and outer core window positions, reaching up to 40%, is analyzed. The impact of physical winding displacement on axial forces is also studied. Simulation results, validated against analytical calculations, show peak short-circuit currents of 6963 A on the high-voltage (HV) winding and 70,411 A on the low-voltage (LV) winding. Average radial forces were 136 kN on the HV winding and 89 kN on the LV winding, while average axial forces were 8 kN on the HV and 9 kN on the LV. This agreement verifies the FEA models’ reliability. The results provide insights into winding behavior under severe faults and enhance transformer design reliability. Full article

This paper presents a novel analytical model of a double-stator single-rotor (DSSR) ironless axial flux machine (IAFM), with no iron either in the rotor or in the stator, that has cylindrical magnets in the rotor. The model is based on sizing equations that include the peak no-load flux density as a determining parameter, and then static simulations using the finite element method show that the 3D magnetic field created by cylindrical magnets can be generally fitted with an empirical function. The analytical model is validated throughout this work with finite element simulations and experiments over a prototype, showing a good agreement. It is stated that the integration of the magnetic field for different rotor positions, using the empirical approach presented here, gives accurate results regarding the back-electromotive force waveform and harmonics, with a reduced computation time and effort compared to the finite element method and avoiding complex formulations of previous analytical models. Moreover, this straightforward approach facilitates the design and comparison of IAFMs with other machine topologies, as sizing equations and magnetic circuits developed for conventional electrical machines are not valid for IAFMs, because, here, the magnetic field circulates entirely through air due to the absence of ferromagnetic materials. Furthermore, the scope of this paper is limited to a DSSR-IAFM, but the method can be directly applied to single-sided IAFMs and could be refined to deal with single-stator double-rotor IAFMs. Full article

This study presents a comprehensive mathematical model of a semiconductor structure based on vanadium dioxide (VO2), specifically in its conductive phase. The model was developed using the finite element method (FEM), enabling detailed simulation of the formation of a conductive channel under the influence of low-frequency alternating voltage (50 Hz). The VO2 structure under investigation exhibits pronounced electric field concentration at the surface, where the field strength reaches approximately 5 × 104 V/m, while maintaining a more uniform distribution of around 2 × 104 V/m within the bulk of the material. The simulation results were validated experimentally using a test circuit. Minor deviations—no greater than 8%—were observed between the simulated and measured current values, attributed to magnetic core saturation and modeling assumptions. A distinctive feature of the model is its ability to incorporate the nonlinear dependencies of VO2’s electrical properties on frequency. Analytical expressions were derived for the magnetic permeability and resistivity of VO2, demonstrating excellent agreement with experimental data. The coefficients of determination (R2) for the frequency dependence of magnetic permeability and resistance were found to be 0.9976 and 0.9999, respectively. The current version of the model focuses exclusively on the conductive phase and does not include the thermally induced metal–insulator phase transition characteristic of VO2. The study confirms that VO2-based structures exhibit high responsiveness and nonlinear switching behavior, making them suitable for applications in electronic surge protection, current limiting, and switching elements. The developed model provides a reliable and physically grounded tool for the design and optimization components based on VO2 in power electronics and protective circuitry. Full article

This paper introduces an enhanced bi-directional full-bridge resonant converter designed for Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems. A key innovation lies in the incorporation of an auxiliary LC resonant circuit connected via a tertiary transformer winding. This circuit dynamically modifies the magnetizing inductance based on operating frequency, enabling soft-switching across all primary switches, specifically, Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) at turn-on and near Zero-Current Switching (ZCS) at turn-off across the entire load spectrum. Additionally, the converter supports both Constant Current (CC) and Constant Voltage (CV) charging modes at distinct, fixed operating frequencies, thus avoiding wide frequency variations. A 3.3 kW prototype developed for onboard electric vehicle charging applications demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed topology. Experimental results confirm high efficiency in both charging and discharging operations, achieving up to 98.13% efficiency in charge mode and 98% in discharge mode. Full article

This paper presents a new resonance circuit design method for LCC-LCC wireless power transfer (WPT) systems that incorporate reactive shielding (SH) coils on the receiver (RX) side to suppress the electromagnetic field (EMF). While reactive SH coils are known to reduce leakage magnetic fields, they alter the equivalent inductance of the system, thereby disrupting resonance conditions. To address this, we derive the changes in the equivalent inductance caused by SH coils and propose a method to re-select the series capacitor on both the RX and TX sides. Furthermore, we investigate the adjustment of the required input voltage to maintain output power with the SH coils. The proposed methodology eliminates the need for a series capacitor on the RX side, simplifies the network, and reduces the magnetic leakage field by up to 55.6%, as verified by the simulation and measurement results. This study provides a new pathway toward compact, EMF-conscious and LCC-based WPT systems. Full article

In order to solve the zoom delay issue for high-magnification zoom optical systems, a voice coil motor (VCM) is used to achieve rapid zooming. In this paper, the structural design of VCMs is systematically analyzed through magnetic field numerical computations. Firstly, finite element method (FEM) is used to analyze magnetic field of single magnets, and simulations correspond to experimental results. Both FEM and equivalent magnetic charge (EMC) results confirm that increasing magnet thickness while reducing its lateral dimensions will contribute to magnetic enhancement. Furthermore, the influence of structural parameters VCM is analyzed, validating the yoke’s critical role in suppressing edge effects and optimizing magnetic circuit efficiency, and optimal yoke thickness and magnet width range are determined. Moreover, a simple EMC calculation method is proposed for rapid and accurate determination of the magnetic field distribution in the VCM air gap. Optimal structural parameters of VCM are determined for a 40× rapid zoom lens with cost and space limitations. Driving force Fdrive = 5.58 N is about 5 times the demand force Fd = 1.06 N, and the prototype fabrication of the rapid zoom lens is successfully accomplished. Moving group reaches 35.4 mm destination within 0.18 s, and photographs confirm that the rapid zoom system achieves 100-ms-level short/long-focus transition. Rapid zoom lens shows great potential in applications including security surveillance, industrial visual inspection, and intelligent logistics management. Full article

This paper presents a broadband near-field probe designed for measuring the normal magnetic field (Hz) in radio frequency (RF) circuits operating within a frequency range of 2–8 GHz. The proposed probe uses a cost-effective 4-layer printed circuit board (PCB) structure made with an FR-4 substrate. The probe primarily consists of an Hz detection unit, a broadband microstrip balun, and a coaxial-like output. The broadband balun facilitates the conversion from differential to single-ended signals, thereby enhancing the probe’s common-mode rejection capability. This design ensures that the probe achieves both cost efficiency and high broadband measurement performance. Additionally, this work investigates the feasibility of employing microstrip lines as calibration standards for the Hz probe. The probe’s structural parameters and magnetic field response were initially determined through simulations, and the calibration factor was subsequently verified by calibration experiments. In practical measurements, the field distributions above a microstrip line and a low-noise amplifier (LNA) were captured. The measured field distribution of the microstrip line was compared with simulation results to verify the probe’s performance. Meanwhile, the measured field distribution of the LNA was utilized to identify the radiating components within the amplifier. Full article

The aim of this work was to design a coil for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to analyze the morphology of cells in vitro. This newly developed hardware, due to compatibility to the 1.5-Tesla MRI scanner (GE Healthcare, Boston, MA, USA), allows for the characterization of cell cultures in vitro. To adapt a designed coil on the 1.5-Tesla MRI scanner, some changes in hardware and software were carried out. The advantage of the designed receiving circuit is the ability to perform MRI with a resolution of 80 μm × 80 μm pixel size. Additionally, this coil can be used to visualize cell cultures and tissue sections, which, due to their small dimensions, could not be imaged on standard MRS and MRI coils at 1.5 Tesla. Full article

An Iterative Error Correction Procedure for Single Sheet Testers Using FEM 3D Model

Determination of single-valued BH curve and power loss curve of electric steels is an important parameter in the design of electrical machines and transformers. This paper proposes a correction procedure for the measurement of anhysteretic BH curve and power losses, based on the finite element model (FEM) and SST apparatus. A 3D finite element model (FEM) of the SST (Single Sheet Tester) was developed with respect to the IEC 60404-3 standard. The measurement results obtained with a standardized SST apparatus are fed to its FEM and used to iteratively correct initial BH and power loss curves, obtained using magnetic equivalent circuits theory. The proposed iterative correction procedure is based on the steepest descent algorithm, while the stopping criteria were based on the difference between simulated and measured global variables (power loss, induced voltage, and primary current). After correction, root mean squared errors were decreased from 1.85 A/m to 42.88 × 10−3 A/m for the BH curve, and from 44.5 × 10−4 W/kg to 7.28 × 10−4 W/kg for the power loss curve. Full article
