Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce this Special Issue, entitled “Actuators in 2025”, which is a part of the MDPI journal New Year Special Issue Series. This Special Issue will be a collection of high-quality reviews and original articles from Advisory Board Members, Editorial Board Members, Guest Editors, Topical Advisory Panel Members, and Reviewer Board Members, in addition to excellent editorials from EiCs and Section EiCs. This Special Issue collects papers regarding innovative ideas on actuators, including actuator principles, actuator materials, actuator mechanisms/designs, drive/control schemes, and their applications.

The submission deadline for this Special Issue is 31 December 2025. We kindly encourage all research groups to contribute up-to-date results from the latest developments in your respected laboratories. We look forward to your submissions.

We investigated the electrochemical properties of and conducted an electromechanical analysis on a stacked polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel actuator, comprising a PVC gel plasticized with dibutyl adipate (DBA) sandwiched between a metal mesh and a metal disk electrode. In this study, we examined the electrochemical impedance, displacement, and electric current responses to square-wave voltage inputs. The linear motion of PVC gel actuators with and without ionic liquid (IL) additives was analyzed in relation to the mesh size and metal composition of the mesh electrode. The displacement increased with decreasing mesh numbers, indicating that displacement increases with increasing wire diameter and space length. The linear motion of the stacked PVC gel actuators with and without IL additives depended on the metal species of the mesh electrodes. The electrochemical impedance of the stacked PVC gel actuators under DC voltage application was analyzed with and without the IL. Based on the electromechanical and electrochemical results, a deformation model was developed to describe the linear motion of stacked PVC gel actuators in response to the applied voltage. The model attributed this motion to the deformation induced by Maxwell stress in the solvent-rich layer, successfully accounting for the experimental observations. Full article

The Systematic Design of Voice Coil Motor Structures for Rapid Zoom Optical Lens

In order to solve the zoom delay issue for high-magnification zoom optical systems, a voice coil motor (VCM) is used to achieve rapid zooming. In this paper, the structural design of VCMs is systematically analyzed through magnetic field numerical computations. Firstly, finite element method (FEM) is used to analyze magnetic field of single magnets, and simulations correspond to experimental results. Both FEM and equivalent magnetic charge (EMC) results confirm that increasing magnet thickness while reducing its lateral dimensions will contribute to magnetic enhancement. Furthermore, the influence of structural parameters VCM is analyzed, validating the yoke’s critical role in suppressing edge effects and optimizing magnetic circuit efficiency, and optimal yoke thickness and magnet width range are determined. Moreover, a simple EMC calculation method is proposed for rapid and accurate determination of the magnetic field distribution in the VCM air gap. Optimal structural parameters of VCM are determined for a 40× rapid zoom lens with cost and space limitations. Driving force Fdrive = 5.58 N is about 5 times the demand force Fd = 1.06 N, and the prototype fabrication of the rapid zoom lens is successfully accomplished. Moving group reaches 35.4 mm destination within 0.18 s, and photographs confirm that the rapid zoom system achieves 100-ms-level short/long-focus transition. Rapid zoom lens shows great potential in applications including security surveillance, industrial visual inspection, and intelligent logistics management. Full article
