Bacterial and Physicochemical Dynamics During the Vermicomposting of Bovine Manure: A Comparative Analysis of the Eisenia fetida Gut and Compost Matrix

Vermicomposting is a sustainable biotechnological process that transforms organic waste through the synergistic activity of earthworms, such as Eisenia fetida, and their associated microbiota. This study evaluated bacterial and physicochemical dynamics during the vermicomposting of bovine manure by analyzing the microbial composition of the substrate and the gut of E. fetida at three time points (weeks 0, 6, and 12). The V3–V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced, and microbial diversity was characterized using QIIME2. Significant differences in alpha diversity (observed features, Shannon index, and phylogenetic diversity) and beta diversity indicated active microbial succession. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Actinobacteriota were the dominant phyla, with abundances varying across habitats and over time. A significant enrichment of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and the genera Chryseolinea, Flavobacterium, and Sphingomonas was observed in the manure treatments. In contrast, Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, and the genera Methylobacter, Brevibacillus, Enhygromyxa, and Bacillus, among others, were distinctive of the gut samples and contributed to their dissimilarity from the manure treatments. Simultaneously, the physicochemical parameters indicated progressive substrate stabilization and nutrient enrichment. Notably, the organic matter and total organic carbon contents decreased (from 79.47% to 47.80% and from 46.10% to 27.73%, respectively), whereas the total nitrogen content increased (from 1.70% to 2.23%); these effects reduced the C/N ratio, which is a recognized indicator of maturity, from 27.13 to 12.40. The macronutrient contents also increased, with final values of 1.41% for phosphorus, 1.50% for potassium, 0.89% for magnesium, and 2.81% for calcium. These results demonstrate that vermicomposting modifies microbial communities and enhances substrate quality, supporting its use as a biofertilizer for sustainable agriculture, soil restoration, and agrochemical reduction. Magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) exhibits brittleness when utilized as a repair material for bridge decks. To address this issue, this study employs nano-TiO2 (NT) and a novel material (basalt fiber bar) as modifiers. A double-K fracture model is developed for the modified MPC to quantitatively evaluate the enhancement of fracture toughness induced by NT and basalt fiber bars. The cracking behavior and toughening mechanisms of the NT and basalt fiber bar reinforced MPC are investigated using extended finite element theory and composite material theory. Additionally, a formula is proposed to calculate the incremental fracture toughness of NT and basalt fiber bar reinforced MPC. The results indicated that NT and basalt fiber bar can effectively enhance the ultimate bending capacity of MPC. The improvement increases with the fiber volume fraction, and noticeable bending hardening occurs when the fiber content exceeds 2%. With the same fiber volume fraction, the peak load can be increased by up to 11.7% with the addition of NT. The crack initiation toughness of the NT group without basalt fiber bars is 58% higher than that of the CC group. The content and diameter of basalt fiber bar are critical parameters affecting the toughness of the NT and basalt fiber bar reinforced MPC. Full article

The utilisation of edible insects for human nutrition is a long-standing practice in many parts of the globe, and is being gradually introduced into countries without an entomophagic tradition as well. These unconventional sources of protein of animal origin have arisen as a sustainable alternative to other animal protein sources, such as meat. This review intends to present the compilation of data in the scientific literature on the chemical composition and nutritional value of the bee brood of A. mellifera species and subspecies as edible foods. For this, a comprehensive search of the scientific literature was carried out using the databases ScienceDirect, Scopus, Pub-Med, BOn, and SciELO. Appropriate keywords were used for the search to reach the research works that addressed the topics of the review. The results showed that bee brood has considerable quantities of protein, fat and carbohydrates. The most abundant amino acids are leucine and lysine (these two being essential amino acids) and aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and proline (these three being non-essential amino acids). As for the fatty acids, bee broods contain approximately equal fractions of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, while the polyunsaturated fatty acids are negligible. The dietary minerals present in higher quantities are potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium, and the most abundant vitamins are vitamin C and niacin; choline is also present, although it is not a true vitamin. Although bee brood from A. mellifera has potential for human consumption as a nutrient-rich food, there are still many aspects that need to be further studied in the future, such as safety and hazards linked to possible regular consumption. Altitude-Linked Distribution Patterns of Serum and Hair Mineral Elements in Healthy Yak Calves from Ganzi Prefecture

Mineral imbalances in livestock can critically impair growth, immunity, and productivity. Yaks inhabiting the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau face unique environmental challenges, including high-altitude-induced nutrient variability. This study investigated the status of mineral elements and their correlations with altitude in healthy yak calves across five regions in Ganzi Prefecture, located at elevations ranging from 3100 to 4100 m. Hair and serum samples from 35 calves were analyzed for 11 essential elements (Na, K, Ca, Mg, S, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Co, and Se). The results revealed widespread deficiencies. Key deficiencies were identified: hair Na and Co were significantly below references value (p < 0.05), and Se was consistently deficient across all regions, with deficiency rates ranging from 35.73% to 56.57%. Serum Mg and Cu were generally deficient (Mg deficiency > 26% above 3800 m). S, Mn (low detection), and Co were also suboptimal. Serum selenium deficiency was notably severe in lower-altitude areas (≤59.07%). Significant correlations with altitude were observed: hair sodium levels decreased with increasing altitude (r = −0.72), while hair manganese (r = 0.88) and cobalt (r = 0.65) levels increased. Serum magnesium deficiency became more pronounced at higher elevations (r = 0.58), whereas selenium deficiency in serum was more severe at lower altitudes (r = −0.61). These findings indicate prevalent multi-element deficiencies in yak calves that are closely linked to altitude and are potentially influenced by soil mineral composition and feeding practices, as suggested by previous studies. The study underscores the urgent need for region-specific nutritional standards and altitude-adapted mineral supplementation strategies to support optimal yak health and development. Full article

This study presents the structural and compositional characterisation of a newly developed Ti55Al27Mo13 alloy synthesised via aluminothermic reaction. The alloy was designed to overcome the limitations of conventional processing routes for high–melting–point elements such as Ti and Mo, enabling the formation of a complex, multi–phase microstructure in a single high–temperature step. The aim was to develop and characterise a material with microstructural features expected to enhance wear resistance, oxidation behaviour, and thermal stability in future applications. The alloy is intended as a precursor for composite nanopowders and surface coatings applied to aluminium–, magnesium–, and iron–based substrates subjected to mechanical and thermal loading. Elemental analysis (XRF, EDS) confirmed the presence of Ti, Al, Mo, and minor elements such as Si, Fe, and C. Microstructural investigations using laser confocal and scanning electron microscopy revealed a heterogeneous structure comprising solid solutions, eutectic regions, and dispersed oxide and carbide phases. Notably, the alloy exhibits high hardness values, reaching >2400 HV in Al2O3 regions and ~1300 HV in Mo– and Si–enriched solid solutions. These results suggest the material’s substantial potential for protective surface engineering. Further tribological, thermal, and corrosion testing, conducted with meticulous attention to detail, will follow to validate its functional performance in target applications. Full article

This study examined the comprehensive properties of Mg-Zn-Nd-Zr alloys in order to achieve both high strength and thermal conductivity simultaneously. The impact of rolling on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal conductivity was analyzed for Mg-5Zn-xNd-0.4Zr alloys (x = 1, 2). The results indicate that the addition of Nd promotes the formation of the W phase (Mg3Zn3RE2), which contributes to grain boundary strengthening and enhances the overall strength. Moreover, dynamic precipitation during the rolling process leads to the formation of nanoscale MgZn2 and Zn2Zr phases, significantly improving both the strength and thermal conductivity. After rolling, both the Mg-5Zn-1Nd-0.4Zr (ZNK510) and Mg-5Zn-2Nd-0.4Zr (ZNK520) alloys exhibited a notable enhancement in thermal conductivity, with ZNK520 demonstrating superior properties due to its higher Nd content. This study highlights that optimizing alloy composition and phase evolution through rolling can markedly enhance both the mechanical and thermal properties, offering a promising strategy for the development of high-performance magnesium alloys. Halogenated flame retardants have been amongst the most widely used and effective solutions for enhancing fire resistance. However, their use is currently strictly regulated due to serious health and environmental concerns. In this context, phosphorus-based and mineral flame retardants have emerged as promising alternatives. Despite this, their combined use is neither straightforward nor guaranteed to be effective. This study scrutinizes the interactions between these two classes of flame retardants (FR) through a systematic analysis aimed at elucidating the antagonistic pathways that arise from their coexistence. Specifically, this study focuses on two inorganic fillers, mineral huntite and chemically precipitated magnesium hydroxide, both of which produce basic oxides upon thermal decomposition. These fillers were incorporated into a poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) matrix to be utilized as advanced-mattress FR coating fabric and were subjected to a series of flammability tests. The pyrolysis products of the prepared polymeric composite compounds were isolated and thoroughly characterized using a combination of analytical techniques. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermogravimetric analysis (dTGA) were employed to monitor decomposition behavior, while the char residues collected at different pyrolysis stages were examined spectroscopically, using FTIR-ATR and Raman spectroscopy, to identify their structure and the chemical reactions that led to their formation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments were also conducted to complement the spectroscopic findings in the chemical composition of the resulting char residues and to pinpoint the different species that constitute them. The morphological changes of the char’s structure were monitored by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Finally, the Limited Oxygen Index (LOI) and UL94 (vertical sample mode) methods were used to assess the relative flammability of the samples, revealing a significant drop in flame retardancy when both types of flame retardants are present. This reduction is attributed to the neutralization of acidic phosphorus species by the basic oxides generated during the decomposition of the basic inorganic fillers, as confirmed by the characterization techniques employed. These findings underscore the challenge of combining organophosphorus with popular flame-retardant classes such as mineral or basic metal flame retardants, offering insight into a key difficulty in formulating next-generation halogen-free flame-retardant composite coatings. Introduction: The sodium-to-potassium (Na:K) ratio in the diet is a critical biomarker for cardiovascular and metabolic health, yet global adherence to recommended levels remains poor. Objectives: The objective of this study was to identify dietary determinants of the dietary Na:K ratio and its associations with micronutrient intake and diet quality. Methods: An observational cross-sectional survey was conducted in a representative sample of manufacturing workers through a combined stratified proportional and two-stage probability sampling plan, with strata defined by company size and industrial sector from the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Dietary intake was assessed using 24 h recalls via the Multiple Pass Method, with Na:K ratios calculated from quantified food composition data. Diet quality was assessed with the Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I). Multiple linear regression was used to analyze associations of Na:K ratio with the study variables. Results: The survey was conducted in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, in 921 randomly selected manufacturing workers. The sample mean age was 38.2 ± 10.7 years, 55.9% males, mean BMI 27.2 ± 4.80 kg/m2. The mean Na:K ratio was 1.97 ± 0.86, with only 0.54% of participants meeting the WHO recommended target (<0.57). Fast food (+3.29 mg/mg per serving, p < 0.001), rice, bread, and red meat significantly increased the ratio, while fruits (−0.16 mg/mg), dairy, white meat, and coffee were protective. Higher Na:K ratios were associated with lower intake of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamins C, D, and E, as well as poorer diet quality (DQI-I score: −0.026 per 1 mg/mg increase, p < 0.001). Conclusions: These findings highlight the critical role of processed foods in elevating Na:K ratios and the potential for dietary modifications to improve both electrolyte balance and micronutrient adequacy in industrial workers. The study underscores the need for workplace interventions that simultaneously address sodium reduction, potassium enhancement, and overall diet quality improvement tailored to socioeconomic and cultural contexts, a triple approach not previously tested in intervention studies. Future studies should further investigate nutritional consequences of imbalanced Na:K intake. Full article

Milk lactose concentration has been proposed as a noninvasive indicator of metabolic health in dairy cows, particularly during early lactation when metabolic demands are elevated. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between milk lactose levels and physiological, biochemical, and behavioral parameters in early-lactation Holstein cows. Twenty-eight clinically healthy cows were divided into two groups: Group 1 (milk lactose < 4.70%, n = 14) and Group 2 (milk lactose ≥ 4.70%, n = 14). Both groups were monitored over a 21-day period using the Brolis HerdLine in-line milk analyzer (Brolis Sensor Technology, Vilnius, Lithuania) and SmaXtec intraruminal boluses (SmaXtec Animal Care Technology®, Graz, Austria). Parameters including milk yield, milk composition (lactose, fat, protein, and fat-to-protein ratio), blood biomarkers, and behavior were recorded. Cows with higher milk lactose concentrations (≥4.70%) produced significantly more milk (+12.76%) and showed increased water intake (+15.44%), as well as elevated levels of urea (+21.63%), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (+22.96%), glucose (+4.75%), magnesium (+8.25%), and iron (+13.41%) compared to cows with lower lactose concentrations (<4.70%). A moderate positive correlation was found between milk lactose and urea levels (r = 0.429, p < 0.01), and low but significant correlations were observed with other indicators. These findings support the use of milk lactose concentration as a practical biomarker for assessing metabolic and physiological status in dairy cows, and highlight the value of integrating real-time monitoring technologies in precision livestock management. The accelerated hydrolytic degradation of poly(L-lactide) (PLA)/magnesium (Mg) composite films was investigated to elucidate the influence of surface modification of Mg particles on the degradation behavior and characteristics of PLA composites. Accelerated degradation studies were conducted at 60 °C in a pH 7.4 phosphate-buffered solution over 7 weeks, with degradation monitored using several techniques: mass loss, water absorption, thermal analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicated that all composite films experienced more than 90% mass loss at the end of experiment; however, PLA/5MgTT and PLA/5MgPEI exhibited the highest resistance to degradation, likely due to the protective effect of the surface modification induced by thermal treatment and polyethylenimine (PEI). Notably, these characteristics did not compromise the biocompatibility or osteogenic potential of the films, which remained comparable to the control samples when tested on human bone marrow multipotent mesenchymal/stromal cells. Currently, in the context of the emphasis on introducing a reduction in mineral fertilization and the increase in pressure on sustainable agriculture, magnesium fertilization and the use of biostimulants are becoming an alternative tool to increase the quality of potato tuber yield. This study aimed to assess the impact of potato genotype, cultivation technology, and long-term storage on the susceptibility of tubers to enzymatic browning. Two edible potato varieties were examined: the early ‘Wega’ and the mid-early ‘Soraya’. It was demonstrated that the varieties maintained their characteristic browning susceptibility consistent with their breeding descriptions. The ‘Wega’ variety exhibited decreasing browning susceptibility immediately after harvest; however, after 6 months of storage, its susceptibility significantly increased, exceeding that of the ‘Soraya’ variety. Additionally, the application of magnesium fertilization (90 kg ha−1) and biostimulant treatment (3 L ha−1) most effectively reduced the oxidative potential of the tubers, thereby decreasing browning susceptibility. This is due to a significant change in the concentration of organic acids responsible for enzymatic browning processes. A decrease in the content of chlorogenic acid by 9.4% and 8.4% and an increase in the content of citric and ascorbic acid by 11.1%, 5.3%, and 13.6% were achieved. Storage significantly affected the chemical composition of the tubers. An increase in chlorogenic (7.3%) and citric (5.8%) acids and a decrease in ascorbic (34%) acid content were observed. These changes correlated with the intensification of browning, with the increase in chlorogenic acid and the decrease in ascorbic acid having the greatest influence. The results indicate that the technology based on supplementary fertilization and biostimulation improves the quality of potato raw material without a significant increase in production costs. Further research on varieties with different vegetation lengths and those intended for food processing and starch production is advised. Full article

The intensifying global demand for sustainable and nutrient-dense food sources necessitates the exploration of underutilized local resources. Arthrospira platensis var. toliarensis, a cyanobacterium endemic to Madagascar, was evaluated for its nutritional, functional, and environmental potential under small-scale, low-input outdoor cultivation. The study assessed growth kinetics, physicochemical parameters, and composition during two contrasting seasons. Biomass increased 7.5-fold in 10 days, reaching a productivity of 7.8 ± 0.58 g/m2/day and a protein yield of 4.68 ± 0.35 g/m2/day. The hot-season harvest showed significantly higher protein content (65.1% vs. 44.6%), enriched in essential amino acids. On a dry matter basis, mineral profiling revealed high levels of sodium (2140 ± 35.4 mg/100 g), potassium (1530 ± 21.8 mg/100 g), calcium (968 ± 15.1 mg/100 g), phosphorus (815 ± 13.2 mg/100 g), magnesium (389.28 ± 6.4 mg/100 g), and iron (235 ± 9.1 mg/100 g), underscoring its value as a micronutrient-rich supplement. The hydroethanolic extract had the highest polyphenol content (4.67 g GAE/100 g of dry extract), while the hexanic extract exhibited the strongest antioxidant capacity (IC50 = 101.03 ± 1.37 µg/mL), indicating fat-soluble antioxidants. Aflatoxin levels (B1, B2, G1, and G2) remained below EU safety thresholds. Compared to soy and beef, this strain showed superior protein productivity and water-use efficiency. These findings confirm A. platensis var. toliarensis as a promising, ecologically sound alternative for improving food and nutrition security, and its local production can offer substantial benefits to smallholder livelihoods. Xylanase is an essential industrial enzyme for degrading plant biomass, pulp and paper, textiles, bio-scouring, food, animal feed, biorefinery, chemicals, and pharmaceutical industries. Despite its significant industrial importance, the extensive application of xylanase is hampered by high production costs and concerns regarding the safety of xylanase-producing microorganisms. The utilisation of renewable polymers for enzyme production is becoming a cost-effective alternative. Among the prospective candidates, non-pathogenic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are promising for safe and eco-friendly applications. Our investigation revealed that Pediococcus pentosaceus G4, isolated from plant sources, is a notable producer of extracellular xylanase. Improving the production of extracellular xylanase is crucial for viable industrial applications. Therefore, the current study investigated the impact of various medium components and optimised the selected medium composition for extracellular xylanase production of P. pentosaceus G4 using Plackett–Burman Design (PBD) and Central Composite Design (CCD) statistical approaches. According to BPD analysis, 8 out of the 19 investigated factors (glucose, almond shell, peanut shell, walnut shell, malt extract, xylan, urea, and magnesium sulphate) demonstrated significant positive effects on extracellular xylanase production of P. pentosaceus G4. Among them, glucose, almond shells, peanut shells, urea, and magnesium sulphate were identified as the main medium components that significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the production of extracellular xylanase of P. pentosaceus G4. The optimal concentrations of glucose, almond shells, peanut shells, urea, and magnesium sulphate, as determined via CCD, were 26.87 g/L, 16 g/L, 30 g/L, 2.85 g/L, and 0.10 g/L, respectively. The optimised concentrations resulted in extracellular xylanase activity of 2.765 U/mg, which was similar to the predicted extracellular xylanase activity of 2.737 U/mg. The CCD-optimised medium yielded a 3.13-fold enhancement in specific extracellular xylanase activity and a 7.99-fold decrease in production costs compared to the commercial de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe medium, implying that the CCD-optimised medium is a cost-effective medium for extracellular xylanase production of P. pentosaceus G4. Moreover, this study demonstrated a positive correlation between extracellular xylanase production, growth, lactic acid production and the amount of sugar utilised, implying the multifaceted interactions of the physiological variables affecting extracellular xylanase production in P. pentosaceus G4. In conclusion, statistical methods are effective in rapidly assessing and optimising the medium composition to enhance extracellular xylanase production of P. pentosaceus G4. Furthermore, the findings of this study highlighted the potential of using LAB as a cost-effective producer of extracellular xylanase enzymes using optimised renewable polymers, offering insights into the future use of LAB in producing hemicellulolytic enzymes. The scientific literature currently lacks studies that evaluate the nutritional composition of the tissues of cattle raised in different systems, so that the nutritional effects can be known and used to enhance consumption and use in the diet. The aim was therefore to assess whether the mineral content of muscle tissue (longissimus lumborum) in cattle finished during the rainy season in the Eastern Amazon is influenced by different farming systems. The treatments consisted of four systems (three pasture production systems and one feedlot system). 1. native wetland pasture in Santa Cruz do Arari (Mesoregion of Marajó); 2. native wetland pasture in Monte Alegre (Mesoregion of Baixo Amazonas); 3. cultivated dryland pasture in São Miguel do Guamá (Mesoregion of Nordeste Paraense); and 4. Confinement in Santa Izabel do Pará (Metropolitan Region of Belém). The analyses were carried out on samples of the longissimus lumborum muscle tissue of 48 male, castrated, crossbred Nelore cattle, twelve per breeding system, from commercial farms, destined for meat production, finished during the rainiest period of the year (between January and June). In systems 1 and 2, the animals were slaughtered in licensed slaughterhouses; the animals in systems 3 and 4 were slaughtered in commercial slaughterhouses. Food sampling and chemical analysis, soil sample collection and analysis, longissimus lumborum muscle tissue collection, sample preparation and digestion, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry were evaluated. The experimental design was completely randomized in a linear model with four rearing systems and one period (rainy). The data was compared using the Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS) program. All analyses were carried out considering a significance level of 0.05. Samples of the diets offered (pasture and concentrate) were also collected. The Amazon systems influenced the macro- and micromineral content in the muscles of cattle (p < 0.05). The interaction between pasture systems vs. confinement showed differences in the minerals calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) (p < 0.05). However, there was no difference in the values of sodium (Na), potassium (K), and sulfur (S) between the rearing systems (p > 0.05). By contrast, the cultivated pasture system vs. extensive pasture showed differences in all the elements evaluated (p < 0.05). The rearing systems of the Eastern Amazon influenced the mineral content of beef, which continues to be an excellent source of macro- and microminerals and can compose the human diet. Full article

The development of lightweight composites with superior mechanical properties and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance is essential for various structural and functional applications. This study investigates the effect of hybrid nanocarbon (graphene nanosheet (GNS) and carbon nanotube (CNT)) reinforcements on the properties of magnesium (Mg) matrix composites. Specifically, the GNS-CNT hybrid, which forms a three-dimensional interconnected network structure, was analyzed and compared to composites reinforced with only GNSs or CNTs. The objective was to determine the benefits of hybrid reinforcements on the mechanical strength and EMI shielding capability of the composites. The results indicated that the GNS-CNT/Mg composite, at a nanocarbon content of 0.5 wt.% and a GNS-CNT ratio of 1:2, achieved optimal performance, with a 55% increase in tensile strength and an EMI shielding effectiveness of 70 dB. The observed enhancements can be attributed to several key mechanisms: effective load transfer, which promotes tensile twinning, along with improved impedance matching and multiple internal reflections within the GNS-CNT network, which enhance absorption loss. These significant improvements position the composite as a promising candidate for advanced applications requiring high strength, toughness, and efficient electromagnetic shielding, providing valuable insights into the design of high-performance lightweight materials.
