Electric motors play a decisive role in electric vehicles by converting electrical energy into mechanical motion across various drivetrain components. However, failures in these motors can interrupt the motor function, with approximately 40% of these failures stemming from bearing issues. Key contributors to bearing degradation include shaft voltage, bearing current, and electric discharge material spalling current, especially in motors powered by inverters or variable frequency drives. This review explores the tribological and vibrational aspects of bearing currents, analyzing their mechanisms and influence on electric motor performance. It addresses the challenges faced by electric vehicles, such as high-speed operation, elevated temperatures, electrical conductivity, and energy efficiency. This study investigates the origins of bearing currents, damage linked to shaft voltage and electric discharge material spalling current, and the effects of lubricant properties on bearing functionality. Moreover, it covers various methods for measuring shaft voltage and bearing current, as well as strategies to alleviate the adverse impacts of bearing currents. This comprehensive analysis aims to shed light on the detrimental effects of bearing currents on the performance and lifespan of electric motors in electric vehicles, emphasizing the importance of tribological considerations for reliable operation and durability. The aim of this study is to address the engineering problem of bearing failure in inverter-fed EV motors by integrating electrical, tribological, and lubrication perspectives. The novelty lies in proposing a conceptual link between lubricant breakdown and damage morphology to guide mitigation strategies. The study tasks include literature review, analysis of bearing current mechanisms and diagnostics, and identification of technological trends. The findings provide insights into lubricant properties and diagnostic approaches that can support industrial solutions. Full article

The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

In light of the persistent environmental degradation driven by fossil fuels, developing new energy sources is essential for achieving sustainability. The recent surge in electric vehicle adoption has underscored the significance of new energy batteries. However, the supply chains of new energy battery manufacturers face multiple sustainability risks, which impede sustainable practice adoption. To tackle these challenges, leanness philosophy is an effective tool, and Industry 5.0 enhances its efficacy significantly, further mitigating sustainability risks. This study integrates the supply chain, leanness philosophy, and Industry 5.0 by applying quality function deployment. A novel four-phase hybrid MCDM model integrating the fuzzy Delphi method, DEMATEL, AHP, and fuzzy VIKOR, identified five key sustainability risks five core leanness principles, and eight critical Industry 5.0 enablers. By examining a Chinese new energy battery manufacturer as a case study, the findings aim to assist managers and decision-makers in mitigating sustainability risks within their supply chains. This study analyses the greenhouse gas reduction potential of different end-of-life (EoL) strategies based on a case study of light electric vehicles (LEVs). Using a shared electric moped scooter as a reference, four EoL scenarios are evaluated in a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA). The modelling of the scenarios combines different R-strategies (e.g., recycling, reusing, and repurposing) regarding both the vehicle itself and the battery. German and EU regulations for vehicle and battery disposal are incorporated, as well as EU directives such as the Battery Product Pass. The global warming potential (GWP100) of the production and EoL life cycle stages ranges from 644 to 1025 kg CO2 eq among the four analysed scenarios. Landfill treatment led to the highest GWP100, with 1.47 times higher emissions than those of the base scenario (status quo treatment following EU directives), while increasing component reuse and repurposing the battery cells achieved GWP100 reductions of 2.8% and 7.8%, respectively. Overall, the importance of implementing sustainable EoL strategies for LEVs is apparent. To achieve this, a product design that facilitates EoL material and component separation is essential as well as the development of political and economic frameworks. Accurate State of Charge (SOC) estimation is critical for optimizing the performance and longevity of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which are widely used in applications ranging from electric vehicles to renewable energy storage. Traditional SOC estimation methods, such as Coulomb counting and open-circuit voltage measurement, suffer from cumulative errors and slow response times. This paper proposes a novel machine learning-based approach for SOC estimation by integrating Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) with the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method, Atom Search Optimization (ASO), and Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM). This study focuses on large-capacity lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries (3.2 V, 104 Ah), addressing a gap in existing research. EIS data collected at various SOC levels and temperatures were processed using SHAP for feature extraction (FE), and the ASO–LightGBM model was employed for SOC prediction. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed SHAP–ASO–LightGBM method significantly improves estimation accuracy, achieving an RMSE of 3.3%, MAE of 1.86%, and R2 of 0.99, outperforming traditional methods like LSTM and DNN. The findings highlight the potential of EIS and machine learning (ML) for robust SOC estimation in large-capacity LIBs. Full article

The urgent demand for sustainable energy solutions in the face of climate change and resource depletion has catalyzed a global shift toward cleaner energy production and more efficient storage technologies. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), as the cornerstone of modern portable electronics, electric vehicles, and grid-scale storage systems, are continually evolving to meet the growing performance requirements. In this dynamic context, two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as highly promising candidates for use in electrodes due to their layered structure, tunable electronic properties, and high theoretical capacity. Among 2D materials, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has gained increasing attention as a promising low-dimensional candidate for LIB anode applications. This review provides a comprehensive yet concise overview of recent advances in the application of MoS2 in LIB electrodes, with particular attention to its unique electrochemical behavior at the nanoscale. We critically examine the interplay between structural features, charge-storage mechanisms, and performance metrics—chiefly the specific capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability. Furthermore, we discuss current challenges, primarily poor intrinsic conductivity and volume fluctuations, and highlight innovative strategies aimed at overcoming these limitations, such as through nanostructuring, composite formation, and surface engineering. By shedding light on the opportunities and hurdles in this rapidly progressing field, this work offers a forward-looking perspective on the role of MoS2 in the next generation of high-performance LIBs. The increasing adoption of Light Electric Vehicles (LEVs) in urban areas, driven by the micromobility wave, raises significant safety concerns, particularly regarding battery fire incidents. This research investigates the electromechanical performance of aged 18650 lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) from LEVs under mechanical impact conditions. For this study, a battery module from a used e-scooter was disassembled, and its constituent cells were reconfigured into compact modules for testing. To characterize their initial condition, the cells underwent cycling tests to evaluate their state of health (SOH). Although a slight majority of the cells retained an SOH greater than 80%, a notable increase in their internal resistance (IR) was also observed, indicating degradation due to aging. The mechanical impact tests were conducted in adherence to the UL 2271:2018 standard, employing a semi-sinusoidal acceleration pulse. During these tests, linear kinematics were analyzed using videogrammetry, while key electrical and thermal parameters were monitored. Additionally, strain gauges were installed on the central cells to measure stress and deformation. The results from the mechanical shock tests revealed characteristic acceleration and velocity patterns. These findings clarify the electromechanical behavior of aged LIBs under impact, providing critical data to enhance the safety and reliability of these vehicles. Full article

The development of solar technologies and the widespread adoption of photovoltaic (PV) panels have significantly transformed the global energy landscape. PV panels have evolved from niche applications to become a primary source of electricity generation, driven by their environmental benefits and declining costs. However, the performance and operational lifespan of PV systems are often compromised by various faults, which can lead to efficiency losses and increased maintenance costs. Consequently, effective and timely fault detection methods have become a critical focus of current research in the field. This work proposes an innovative video-based method for the dimensional evaluation and detection of malfunctions in solar panels, utilizing processing techniques applied to aerial images captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). The method is based on a novel mini-pattern matching algorithm designed to identify specific defect features despite challenging environmental conditions such as strong gradients of non-uniform lighting, partial shading effects, or the presence of accidental deposits that obscure panel surfaces. The proposed approach aims to enhance the accuracy and reliability of fault detection, enabling more efficient monitoring and maintenance of PV installations. Full article

If new technologies can increase production efficiency and reduce the consumption of natural resources, they can also bring new environmental risks. This dynamic is particularly relevant for the automotive industry, since it is one of the sectors that invests most in R&D, but at the same time also contributes a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions and consumes a large amount of energy. This article aims to analyze the feasibility of meeting the environmental targets in place within 32 European countries in light of the recent technological trajectory of the automotive industry, namely with regard to the adoption of the propulsion model’s alternative to oil and diesel. Using data disaggregated by countries from 2000 up until 2020, in this paper, the estimated regressions aimed to not only verify whether electrical vehicles had a positive impact on CO2 emissions found in the European market, but to also assess whether they will meet the target set for the next 30 years, with attention to the economy recovery after 2025 and a more robust EV market penetration in replacement of traditional fossil fuels cars. Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are widely used in applications such as Electric Vehicles (EVs) due to their high efficiency, low maintenance, and favorable torque-to-mass ratio. However, one major challenge in BLDC motors is the presence of current harmonics, which can lead to increased noise, vibration, and reduced efficiency, particularly at low speeds or light loads. These harmonics primarily arise from abrupt current transitions during phase commutation. To address this, thispaper presents an innovative approach that combines the Proposed Sigmoid Trapezoidal Current Model with hysteresis control to reduce current harmonics. The model facilitates smooth current changes by applying a sigmoid function, replacing sharp transitions with gradual ones, thus significantly minimizing harmonic distortion. Additionally, hysteresis PWM control enhances the system by precisely regulating the current and dynamically adjusting the switching frequency to maintain the current within a defined range. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of this method, showing substantial reductions in current harmonics, speed ripple, and torque ripple. Specifically, the proposed method reduces torque ripple by 81% compared to traditional Electronic Commutation Control and improves torque ripple by 30% compared to the conventional method. The adoption of heavy-duty electric vehicles (HDEVs) is key to achieving transportation decarbonization. A major component of this transition is the need for new supporting infrastructure: electric charging stations (CSs). HDEV CSs must be planned considering charging requirements, economic constraints, the rollout plan for HDEVs, and local utility grid conditions. Together, these considerations highly differentiate HDEV CS planning from light-duty CS planning. This paper addresses the challenges of HDEV CS planning by presenting a framework for determining the optimal sizing of multiple HDEV CSs using a multi-period expansion model. The framework uses historical data from depots and applies a mixed-approach optimization solver to determine the optimal sizes of two types of CSs: one that relies entirely on power generated by a PV system with local battery storage, and another that relies entirely on utility grid power supply. A two-layer uncertainty model is proposed to account for variations in PV power generation, HDEV arrival/departure times, and charger failures. The multi-period expansion strategy achieves up to a 78% reduction in total annual costs during the first deployment period, compared to fully expanded CSs. Full article

Aiming at the problems of energy utilization efficiency and braking stability in electric vehicles, a high-efficiency and energy-saving control strategy that takes both driving and braking into account is proposed with the distributed hub motor-driven vehicle as the research object. Under regular driving and braking conditions, the front and rear axle torque distribution coefficients are optimized by an adaptive particle swarm algorithm based on simulated annealing and a multi-objective co-optimization strategy based on variable weight coefficients, respectively. During emergency braking, the anti-lock braking strategy (ABS) based on sliding mode control realizes the independent distribution of torque among four wheels. The joint simulation verification based on MATLAB R2023a/Simulink-Carsim 2020.0 shows that under World Light Vehicle Test Cycle (WLTC) conditions, the optimization strategy reduces the driving energy consumption by 3.20% and 2.00%, respectively, compared with the average allocation and the traditional strategy. The braking recovery energy increases by 4.07% compared with the fixed proportion allocation, improving the energy utilization rate of the entire vehicle. The wheel slip rate can be quickly stabilized near the optimal value during emergency braking under different adhesion coefficients, which ensures the braking stability of the vehicle. The effectiveness of the strategy is verified. Full article

Frequency regulation (FR) constitutes a fundamental aspect of power system stability, particularly in the context of the growing integration of intermittent renewable energy sources (RES) and electric vehicles (EVs). The load frequency control (LFC) mechanism, essential for achieving FR, is increasingly reliant on communication infrastructures that are inherently vulnerable to cyber threats. Cyberattacks targeting these communication links can severely compromise coordination among smart grid components, resulting in erroneous control actions that jeopardize the security and stability of the power system. In light of these concerns, this study proposes a cyber-physical LFC framework incorporating a fuzzy linear active disturbance rejection controller (F-LADRC), wherein the controller parameters are systematically optimized using the quasi-opposition-based reptile search algorithm (QORSA). Furthermore, the proposed approach integrates a comprehensive cyberattack detection and prevention scheme, employing Haar wavelet transforms for anomaly detection and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks for predictive mitigation. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is validated through simulations conducted on a restructured power system integrating RES and EVs, as well as a modified IEEE 39-bus test system. The simulation outcomes substantiate the capability of the proposed framework to deliver robust and resilient frequency regulation, maintaining system frequency and tie-line power fluctuations within nominal operational thresholds, even under adverse cyberattack scenarios. The Renewable Energy Community (REC) has emerged in Europe, encouraging the use of renewable energy sources (RESs) within localities, bringing social, economic, and environmental benefits. RESs are characterized by various loads, including household consumption, storage systems, and the increasing integration of electric vehicles (EVs). EVs offer opportunities for distributed RESs, such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, which can be economically advantageous for RECs whose members own EVs and charge them within the community. This article focuses on the integration of PV systems and the management of energy loads for different participants—consumers and prosumers—along with a small EV charging setup in the REC. A REC consisting of a multi-unit building is examined through a mathematical and numerical model. In the model, hourly PV generation data are obtained from the PVGIS tool, while residential load data are modeled by converting monthly electricity bills, including peak and off-peak details, into hourly profiles. Finally, EV hourly load data are obtained after converting the data of voltage and current data from the charging monitoring portal into power profiles. These data are then used in our mathematical model to evaluate energy fluxes and to calculate self-consumed, exported, and shared energy within the REC based on energy balance criteria. In the model, an energy management system (EMS) is included within the REC to analyze EV charging behavior and optimize it in order to increase self-consumption and shared energy. Following the EMS, it is also suggested that the number of EVs to be charged should be evaluated in light of energy-sharing incentives. Numerical results have been reported for different seasons, showing the possibility for the owners of EVs to charge their vehicles within the community to optimize self-consumption and shared energy. The present study evaluates the viability of fabricating unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) propellers using fused filament fabrication (FFF), with an emphasis on low-cost, desktop-scale production. The study’s backdrop is the recent adoption of UAVs and advancements in additive manufacturing. While the scope targets accessibility for individual and small-scale users, the results have broader implications for scalable UAV propulsion systems. The research was conducted within an experimental UAV development framework aimed at optimizing propeller performance through strategic material selection, geometrical design optimization, and additive manufacturing processes. Six propeller variants were manufactured using widely available thermoplastic polymers, including polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified (PETG) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), as well as photopolymer-based propellers fabricated using vat photopolymerization, also known as digital light processing (DLP). Mechanical and aerodynamic characterizations were performed to assess the structural integrity, flexibility, and performance of each material under dynamic conditions. Two blade configurations, a toroidal propeller with anticipated aerodynamic advantages and a conventional tri-blade propeller (Gemfan 51466-3)—were comparatively analyzed. The primary contribution of this work is the systematic evaluation of performance metrics such as thrust generation, acoustic signature, mechanical strength, and thermal stress imposed on the electrical motor, thereby establishing a benchmark for polymer-based propeller fabrication via additive manufacturing. The findings underscore the potential of polymeric materials and layer-based manufacturing techniques in advancing the design and production of UAV propulsion components. Full article
