This study investigates indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring in a student dormitory located in northern Milan (Italy) using low-cost sensors. This research compares two monitoring periods in June and October 2024 to examine common PM2.5 vertical patterns and differences at the building level, as well as their influence on the indoor spaces at the corresponding positions. In each period, around 30 sensors were installed at various heights and orientations across indoor and outdoor spots for 2 weeks to capture spatial variations around the building. Meanwhile, qualitative surveys on occupation presence, satisfaction, and well-being were distributed in selected rooms. The analysis of PM2.5 data reveals that the building’s lower floors tended to have slightly higher outdoor PM2.5 concentrations, while the upper floors generally had lower PM2.5 indoor/outdoor (I/O) ratios, with the top-floor rooms often below 1. High outdoor humidity reduced PM infiltration, but when outdoor PM fell below 20 µg/m3 in these two periods, indoor sources became dominant, especially on the lower floors. Air pressure I/O differences had minimal impact on PM2.5 I/O ratios, though slightly positive indoor pressure might help prevent indoor PM infiltration. Lower ventilation in Period-2 possibly contributed to more reported symptoms, especially in rooms with higher PM from shared kitchens. While outdoor air quality affects IAQ, occupant behavior—especially window opening and ventilation management—remains crucial in minimizing indoor pollutants. Users can also manage exposure by ventilating at night based on comfort and avoiding periods of high outdoor PM. Full article

Wheelchair-mounted assistive robotic manipulators can provide reach and grasp functions for power wheelchair users. This in-lab study evaluated a vision-guided shared control (VGS) system with twelve users completing two multi-step kitchen tasks: a drinking task and a popcorn making task. Using a mixed methods approach participants compared VGS and manual joystick control, providing performance metrics, qualitative insights, and lessons learned. Data collection included demographic questionnaires, the System Usability Scale (SUS), NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX), and exit interviews. No significant SUS differences were found between control modes, but NASA-TLX scores revealed VGS control significantly reduced workload during the drinking task and the popcorn task. VGS control reduced operation time and improved task success but was not universally preferred. Six participants preferred VGS, five preferred manual, and one had no preference. In addition, participants expressed interest in robotic arms for daily tasks and described two main operation challenges: distinguishing wrist orientation from rotation modes and managing depth perception. They also shared perspectives on how a personal robotic arm could complement caregiver support in their home. Full article

Integrated Flushing and Corrosion Control Measures to Reduce Lead Exposure in Households with Lead Service Lines

The quality of water in households can be affected by plumbing design and materials, water usage patterns, and source water quality characteristics. These factors influence stagnation duration, disinfection residuals, metal release, and microbial activity. In particular, stagnation can degrade water quality and increase lead release from lead service lines. This study employs numerical modeling to assess how combined corrosion control and flushing strategies affect lead levels in household taps with lead service lines under reduced water use. To estimate potential health risks, the U.S. EPA model is used to predict the percentage of children likely to exceed safe blood lead levels. Lead exceedances are assessed based on various regulatory requirements. Results show that exceedances at the kitchen tap range from 3 to 74% of usage time for the 5 µg/L standard, and from 0 to 49% for the 10 µg/L threshold, across different scenarios. Implementing corrosion control treatment in combination with periodic flushing proves effective in lowering lead levels under the studied low-consumption scenarios. Under these conditions, the combined strategy limits lead exceedances above 5 µg/L to only 3% of usage time, with none above 10 µg/L. This demonstrates its value as a practical short-term strategy for households awaiting full pipe replacement. Targeted flushing before peak water use reduces the median time that water remains stagnant in household pipes from 8 to 3 h at the kitchen tap under low-demand conditions. Finally, the risk model indicates that the combined approach can reduce the predicted percentage of children with blood lead levels exceeding 5 μg/dL from 61 to 6% under low water demand. There is still a need to develop scenarios and models aimed at substituting fuelwood and reducing the use of fossil fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), on which low-income rural households in the Global South often depend. The use of these fuels for cooking and heating in domestic and productive activities poses significant health and environmental risks. This study validated, in three different phases, the sustainability of a model for the production and use of biogas from the treatment of swine-rearing wastewater (WWs) on a community farm: (i) A Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA), incorporating environmental, social/health, technical, and economic criteria, identified the main weighted criterion to C8 (use of small-scale technologies and low-cost access), with a score of 0.44 points, as well as the Tubular biodigester (Tb) as the most suitable option for the study area, scoring 8.1 points. (ii) Monitoring of the Tb over 90 days showed an average biogas production of 2.6 m3 d−1, with average correlation 0.21 m3 Biogas kg Biomass−1. Using the experimental biogas production rate (k = 0.0512 d−1), the process was simulated with the BgMod model, achieving an average deviation of only 10.4% during the final production phase. (iii) The quantification of benefits demonstrated significant reductions in firewood use: in Scenario S1 (kitchen energy needs), biogas replaced 83.1% of firewood, while in Scenario S2 (citronella essential oil production), the substitution rate was 24.1%. In both cases, the avoided emissions amounted to 0.52 tons of CO2eq per month. Finally, this study proposes a synthesised, community-based rural biogas framework designed for replication in regions with similar socio-environmental, technical, and economic conditions. A Disappearing Cultural Landscape: The Heritage of German-Style Land Use and Pug-And-Pine Architecture in Australia

This paper investigates the cultural landscapes established by nineteenth-century German immigrants in South Australia and the southern Riverina of New South Wales, with particular attention to settlement patterns, architectural traditions and toponymic transformation. German immigration to Australia, though numerically modest compared to the Americas, significantly shaped local communities, especially due to religious cohesion among Lutheran migrants. These settlers established distinct, enduring rural enclaves characterized by linguistic, religious and architectural continuity. The paper examines three manifestations of these cultural landscapes. A rich toponymic landscape was created by imposing on natural landscape features and newly founded settlements the names of the communities from which the German settlers originated. It discusses the erosion of German toponyms under wartime nationalist pressures, the subsequent partial reinstatement and the implications for cultural memory. The study traces the second manifestation of a cultural landscapes in the form of nucleated villages such as Hahndorf, Bethanien and Lobethal, which often followed the Hufendorf or Straßendorf layout, integrating Silesian land-use principles into the Australian context. Intensification of land use through housing subdivisions in two communities as well as agricultural intensification through broad acre farming has led to the fragmentation (town) and obliteration (rural) of the uniquely German form of land use. The final focus is the material expression of cultural identity through architecture, particularly the use of traditional Fachwerk (half-timbered) construction and adaptations such as pug-and-pine walling suited to local materials and climate. The paper examines domestic forms, including the distinctive black kitchen, and highlights how environmental and functional adaptation reshaped German building traditions in the antipodes. Despite a conservation movement and despite considerable documentation research in the late twentieth century, the paper shows that most German rural structures remain unlisted and vulnerable. Heritage neglect, rural depopulation, economic rationalization, lack of commercial relevance and local government policy have accelerated the decline of many of these vernacular buildings. The study concludes by problematizing the sustainability of conserving German Australian rural heritage in the face of regulatory, economic and demographic pressures. With its layering of intangible (toponymic), structural (buildings) and land use (cadastral) features, the examination of the cultural landscape established by nineteenth-century German immigrants adds to the body of literature on immigrant communities, settler colonialism and landscape research. The urbanization-driven surge in kitchen waste necessitates optimized dry anaerobic digestion (DAD; total solids > 15%). Despite its valorization potential, this technology requires efficiency improvements due to mass transfer constraints. This study evaluated TS effects (15%, 20%, or 25%) on methane production. The TS = 20% system achieved peak cumulative methane yield (405.73 ± 11.71 mL/gVS), exceeding TS = 15% (348.09 ± 12.19 mL/gVS) and TS = 25% (293.08 ± 3.55 mL/gVS). This optimization was attributable to synergistic maintenance of metabolic equilibrium through autonomous pH recovery, rapid VFAs degradation, and enhanced TAN tolerance. Conversely, TS = 25% exhibited impaired mass transfer efficiency under high solids, causing VFAs accumulation, ammonia toxicity, and progressive pH decline to 7.5, indicating system destabilization. Organic degradation analysis confirmed superior conversion efficiency in TS = 20% through dynamic SPS–SPN equilibrium. Microbial analysis revealed enhanced metabolic efficiency via synergistic interactions between acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogens in TS = 20%. This research provides technical parameters for optimizing methane production in kitchen waste DAD systems. Full article

Promoting domestic fire safety is crucial for preventing and effectively managing risky situations. This study evaluated the effectiveness of virtual environments (VEs) in fire drills to improve citizens’ knowledge and safe behavior in domestic settings. Conducted at the Citizen School for Risk Prevention (CSRP) in Zaragoza (Spain), the experiment involved 20 participants facing a simulated kitchen fire using a combination of physical and virtual extinguishing equipment. A theoretical session accompanied the drills to reinforce learning. Participants were divided into two groups: one completed the drill before and after the theoretical session, while the other completed it only afterward. Performance was assessed based on the ability to extinguish, control, or lose control of the fire. Surveys administered before, immediately after, and three months after training measured knowledge retention and behavioral changes. The results indicate a significant improvement in fire safety awareness and lasting adoption of safe practices. Participants also emerged as safety advocates. This study highlights the potential of combining theoretical instruction with immersive practical training and identifies strategies for replicating this approach in other prevention schools. The amount of waste generated by society is constantly increasing. Consequently, there is a need to develop new and better methods of treating it. A significant part of municipal waste is biowaste, which can be treated as a source of valuable resources such as nutrients, organic matter, and energy. The present work aims to determine the properties of the tested household biowaste and the possibility of using it as feedstock in slow pyrolysis to obtain biochar. The slow pyrolysis process of the biowaste was carried out in an electrically heated Horizontal Tube Furnace (HTF) at temperatures of 400 °C, 500 °C, and 600 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere. The analysis showed that depending on the type and composition of the biowaste, its properties are different. All the biowaste tested has a high moisture content (between 63.51% and 81.53%), which means that the biowaste needs to be dried before the slow pyrolysis process. The characteristics of kitchen biowaste are similar to those of food waste studied by other researchers in different regions of the world. In addition, the properties of kitchen biowaste are similar to those of the typical biomasses used to produce biochar via slow pyrolysis, such as wood, almond shells, and rice husks. Both kinds of garden biowaste tested may have been contaminated (soil, rocks) during collection, which affected the high ash content of spring (17.75%) and autumn (43.83%) biowaste. This, in turn, affected all the properties of the garden biowaste, which differed significantly from both the literature data of other garden wastes and from the properties of typical biomass feedstocks used to produce biochar in slow pyrolysis. For all biowaste tested, it was shown that as the pyrolysis temperature increases, the yield of biochar decreases. The maximum mass yield of biochar for kitchen, spring garden, and autumn garden biowaste was 36.64%, 66.53%, and 66.99%, respectively. Comparing the characteristics of biowaste before slow pyrolysis, biochar obtained from kitchen biowaste had a high carbon content, fixed carbon, and a higher HHV. With the rapid development of wearable electronics, traditional rigid thermal management materials face limitations in flexibility, conformability, and multi-physics adaptability. Low-dimensional carbon materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes combine ultrahigh thermal conductivity with outstanding mechanical compliance, making them promising building blocks for flexible thermal regulation. This review summarizes recent advances in integrating these materials into textile architectures, mapping the evolution of this emerging field. Key topics include phonon-dominated heat transfer mechanisms, strategies for modulating interfacial thermal resistance, and dimensional effects across scales; beyond these intrinsic factors, hierarchical textile configurations further tailor macroscopic performance. We highlight how one-dimensional fiber bundles, two-dimensional woven fabrics, and three-dimensional porous networks construct multi-directional thermal pathways while enhancing porosity and stress tolerance. As for practical applications, the performance of carbon-based textiles in wearable systems, flexible electronic packaging, and thermal coatings is also critically assessed. Current obstacles—namely limited manufacturing scalability, interfacial mismatches, and thermal performance degradation under repeated deformation—are analyzed. To overcome these challenges, future studies should prioritize the co-design of structural and thermo-mechanical properties, the integration of multiple functionalities, and optimization guided by data-driven approaches. This review thus lays a solid foundation for advancing carbon-based smart textiles toward next-generation flexible thermal management technologies. Full article

This research explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to optimize packaging design, reduce operational costs, and enhance sustainability in e-commerce. As packaging waste and shipping inefficiencies grow alongside global online retail demand, traditional methods for determining box size, material use, and logistics planning have become economically and environmentally inadequate. Using a three-phase framework, this study integrates data-driven diagnostics, AI modeling, and real-world validation. In the first phase, a systematic analysis of current packaging inefficiencies was conducted through secondary data, benchmarking, and cost modeling. Findings revealed significant waste caused by over-packaging, suboptimal box-sizing, and poor alignment between product characteristics and logistics strategy. In the second phase, a random forest (RF) machine learning model was developed to predict optimal packaging configurations using key product features: weight, volume, and fragility. This model was supported by AI simulation tools that enabled virtual testing of material performance, space efficiency, and damage risk. Results demonstrated measurable improvements in packaging optimization, cost reduction, and emission mitigation. The third phase validated the AI framework using practical case studies—ranging from a college textbook to a fragile kitchen dish set and a high-volume children’s bicycle. The model successfully recommended right-sized packaging for each product, resulting in reduced material usage, improved shipping density, and enhanced protection. Simulated cost-saving scenarios further confirmed that smart packaging and AI-generated configurations can drive efficiency. The research concludes that AI-based packaging systems offer substantial strategic value, including cost savings, environmental benefits, and alignment with regulatory and consumer expectations—providing scalable, data-driven solutions for e-commerce enterprises such as Amazon and others. Understanding the characteristics of residential hot-water consumption can be useful for developing effective water-conservation strategies in response to increasing pressure on natural resources. This study systematically investigates residential hot-water consumption through direct monitoring of over 40 domestic fixtures (belonging to six different end-use categories) in five Italian households, recorded over a period ranging from approximately two weeks to nearly four months, and using smart meters with 5 min resolution. A multi-step analysis is applied—at both household and end-use levels, explicitly differentiating tap uses by purpose and location—to (i) quantify daily per capita hot-water consumption, (ii) calculate hot-water ratios, and (iii) assess daily profiles. The results show an average total water consumption of 106.7 L/person/day, with at least 26.1% attributed to hot water. In addition, daily profiles reveal distinct patterns across end uses: hot- and cold-water consumption at kitchen sinks are not aligned over time (with cold water peaking before meals and hot water used predominantly afterward), while bathroom taps show more synchronized use and a marked evening peak in hot-water consumption. Study findings—along with the related open-access dataset—provide a valuable benchmark based on field measurements to support in the process of water demand modeling and the development of targeted demand-management strategies. A majority of households in sub-Saharan Africa use inefficient biomass stoves in poorly ventilated kitchens, leading to indoor air pollution. Biomass for cooking can be sustainably sourced from agricultural residues such as prunings from agroforestry. This study assessed biochar-producing gasifier cookstove performance among 150 households in Embu, Kwale, and Siaya Counties through household surveys and participatory cooking tests with 75 households. With the gasifier, carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations were lower in Embu (5.1 ppm), while carbon dioxide (CO2) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were lower in Kwale, at 588 ppm and 136 μg/m3, respectively. Compared to the three-stone open fire, reductions in CO and PM2.5 concentrations were highest in Embu, at 82% and 97%, respectively. The biomass-to-char conversion efficiency with the gasifier was 17–18%. If households consider the produced char as a soil amendment, they could save 24–43% of fuel compared to the three-stone open fire; if the char is seen as fuel, the potential savings are 42–65%. Significant differences between the three sites were observed with the gasifier for gross and net fuel use, and for concentrations of PM2.5 and CO2. Gasifier uptake can reduce the need for fuel collection and indoor air pollution, with a positive impact on both the environment and human wellbeing. Full article

Enhanced Copper Adsorption with Sustainable Biochar Derived from Kitchen Waste

The escalating threats of climate change, pollution, and a rapidly growing global population are putting immense pressure on water resources, highlighting the urgent need for innovative wastewater recycling solutions. This study explores the potential of biochar, derived from common kitchen waste as a sustainable and efficient adsorbent for copper removal from contaminated water. Seven factors were studied for their influence on the adsorption process, including heavy metal concentration (50–250 ppm), biochar dosage (0.5–2.5 g), contact time (30 min to 29 h), temperature (20–80 °C), pH (2.67–8.07), and the efficacy of activated versus non-activated biochar, with activation carried out using phosphoric acid, silver nitrate, and sulfuric acid. Biochar characterization using Raman spectroscopy, specific surface area by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electron Microscopy—Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), and zeta potential analysis revealed its robust adsorption capacity. Notably, silver nitrate-loaded biochar exhibited the highest adsorption capacity (24.44 mg/g) at 250 ppm of copper and the highest removal rate at about 99.3%, whereas phosphoric acid activation reduced this capacity to 5 mg/g due to structural damage. Importantly, biochar’s adsorption capacity was found to be pH-independent, simplifying operational requirements for treatment systems. Optimal conditions for maximum copper removal were determined to be 100 ppm of copper, a temperature of 60 °C, and a contact time of 30 min. The Langmuir isotherm model best described the adsorption process, indicating a monolayer adsorption with a maximum capacity of 23.25 mg/g. This comprehensive analysis underscores biochar’s potential as a cost-effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly solution for copper removal from wastewater. Full article

The Fourth Industrial Revolution and artificial intelligence (AI) technology are driving the transformation of the meat industry from mechanization and automation to intelligence and digitization. This paper provides a systematic review of key technological innovations in this field, including physical technologies (such as smart cutting precision improved to the millimeter level, pulse electric field sterilization efficiency exceeding 90%, ultrasonic-assisted marinating time reduced by 12 h, and ultra-high-pressure processing extending shelf life) and digital technologies (IoT real-time monitoring, blockchain-enhanced traceability transparency, and AI-optimized production decision-making). Additionally, it explores the potential of alternative meat production technologies (cell-cultured meat and 3D bioprinting) to disrupt traditional models. In application scenarios such as central kitchen efficiency improvements (e.g., food companies leveraging the “S2B2C” model to apply AI agents, supply chain management, and intelligent control systems, resulting in a 26.98% increase in overall profits), end-to-end temperature control in cold chain logistics (e.g., using multi-array sensors for real-time monitoring of meat spoilage), intelligent freshness recognition of products (based on deep learning or sensors), and personalized customization (e.g., 3D-printed customized nutritional meat products), these technologies have significantly improved production efficiency, product quality, and safety. However, large-scale application still faces key challenges, including high costs (such as the high investment in cell-cultured meat bioreactors), lack of standardization (such as the absence of unified standards for non-thermal technology parameters), and consumer acceptance (surveys indicate that approximately 41% of consumers are concerned about contracting illnesses from consuming cultured meat, and only 25% are willing to try it). These challenges constrain the economic viability and market promotion of the aforementioned technologies. Future efforts should focus on collaborative innovation to establish a truly intelligent and sustainable meat production system. Full article

This study aimed to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) in an existing college building in London by addressing two key pollutants: PM2.5 particles (from indoor and outdoor sources) and SARS-CoV-2 as a biological contaminant. Various mitigation strategies were assessed, including hybrid ventilation that combined CIBSE-recommended rates with partial window and door opening. The effectiveness of HEPA-based air purifiers (APs) and upper-room ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) systems with different intensities was also evaluated for reducing viral transmission and the basic reproduction number (R0). To manage PM2.5 in the kitchen, HEPA and in-duct MERV13 filters were integrated into the ventilation system. Results showed that hybrid ventilation outperformed mechanical systems by achieving greater reductions in infection probability (PI) and maintained higher performance as the number of infectors increased, showing only a 2.5–16% drop, compared to 35% with mechanical ventilation. An R0 analysis indicated that UVGI is more suitable in high-risk settings, while APs combined with hybrid ventilation are effective in lower-risk scenarios. The findings also emphasize that combining Supply–Exhaust ventilation with APs or MERV13 filters is crucial for maintaining safe IAQ in kitchens, aligning with the WHO’s short- and long-term exposure limits.
