Twin-screw compressors (TSCs) are widely used in various industries. Their performance is influenced by several parameters, such as rotor profiles, clearance gaps, operating speed, and thermal effects. Traditionally, optimizing these parameters relied on experimental methods, which are costly and time-consuming. However, advancements in computational tools, such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA), have revolutionized compressor analysis. This study presents a CFD analysis of a specific model of a TSC in a 5 male/6 female lobe configuration using the SolidWorks Flow Simulation environment—an approach not traditionally applied to such positive displacement machines. The results visually present internal flow trajectories, fluid velocities, pressure distributions, temperature gradients, and leakage behaviors with high spatial and temporal resolution. Additionally, torque fluctuations and isosurface visualizations revealed insights into mechanical loads and flow behavior. Oil spill simulation models are essential for predicting the oil spill behavior and movement in marine environments. In this study, we comprehensively reviewed a large and diverse body of peer-reviewed literature obtained from Scopus and Web of Science. Our initial analysis phase focused on examining trends in scientific publications, utilizing the complete dataset derived after systematic screening and database integration. In the second phase, we applied elements of a systematic review to identify and evaluate the most influential contributions in the scientific field of oil spill simulations. Our analysis revealed a steady and accelerating growth of research activity over the past five decades, with a particularly notable expansion in the last two. The field has also experienced a marked increase in collaborative practices, including a rise in international co-authorship and multi-authored contributions, reflecting a more global and interdisciplinary research landscape. We cataloged the key modeling frameworks that have shaped the field from established systems such as OSCAR, OIL-MAP/SIMAP, and GNOME to emerging hybrid and Lagrangian approaches. Hydrodynamic models were consistently central, often integrated with biogeochemical, wave, atmospheric, and oil-spill-specific modules. Environmental variables such as wind, ocean currents, and temperature were frequently used to drive model behavior. Geographically, research has concentrated on ecologically and economically sensitive coastal and marine regions. We conclude that future progress will rely on the real-time integration of high-resolution environmental data streams, the development of machine-learning-based surrogate models to accelerate computations, and the incorporation of advanced biodegradation and weathering mechanisms supported by experimental data. These advancements are expected to enhance the accuracy, responsiveness, and operational value of oil spill modeling tools, supporting environmental monitoring and emergency response. Full article

Difficult, extreme operating conditions of parabolic antennas under precipitation and sub-zero temperatures require the creation of effective heating systems. The purpose of the research is to develop a multilayer coating containing two metal-ceramic layers, epoxy composite layers, carbon fabric, and an outer layer of basalt fabric, which allows for effective heating of the antenna, and to study the properties of this coating. The multilayer coating was formed on an aluminum base that was subjected to abrasive jet processing. The first and second metal-ceramic layers, Al2O3 + 5% Al, which were applied by high-speed multi-chamber cumulative detonation spraying (CDS), respectively, provide maximum adhesion strength to the aluminum base and high adhesion strength to the third layer of the epoxy composite containing Al2O3. On this not-yet-polymerized layer of epoxy composite containing Al2O3, a layer of carbon fabric (impregnated with epoxy resin) was formed, which serves as a resistive heating element. On top of this carbon fabric, a layer of epoxy composite containing Cr2O3 and SiO2 was applied. Next, basalt fabric was applied to this still-not-yet-polymerized layer. Then, the resulting layered coating was compacted and dried. To study this multilayer coating, X-ray analysis, light and raster scanning microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used. The thickness of the coating layers and microhardness were measured on transverse microsections. The adhesion strength of the metal-ceramic coating layers to the aluminum base was determined by both bending testing and peeling using the adhesive method. It was established that CDS provides the formation of metal-ceramic layers with a maximum fraction of lamellae and a microhardness of 7900–10,520 MPa. In these metal-ceramic layers, a dispersed subgrain structure, a uniform distribution of nanoparticles, and a gradient-free level of dislocation density are observed. Such a structure prevents the formation of local concentrators of internal stresses, thereby increasing the level of dispersion and substructural strengthening of the metal-ceramic layers’ material. The formation of materials with a nanostructure increases their strength and crack resistance. The effectiveness of using aluminum, chromium, and silicon oxides as nanofillers in epoxy composite layers was demonstrated. The presence of structures near the surface of these nanofillers, which differ from the properties of the epoxy matrix in the coating, was established. Such zones, specifically the outer surface layers (OSL), significantly affect the properties of the epoxy composite. The results of industrial tests showed the high performance of the multilayer coating during antenna heating. Full article

The object of this study is welded joints of AISI 321 and Ti-6Al-4V, obtained by diffusion welding on developed conical surfaces. The problem of creating bimetallic joints of AISI 321 and Ti-6Al-4V with developed conical contact surfaces, using diffusion welding through an intermediate Electrolytic Tough Pitch Copper (Cu-ETP) copper layer, was solved. The joints were studied using micro-X-ray spectral analysis, microstructural analysis, and mechanical tests. High mutual diffusion of copper and titanium, along with increased concentrations of Cr and V in copper, was detected. The shear strength of the obtained welded joints is 250 MPa and 235 MPa at 30 min and 15 min, respectively, which is higher than the copper layer’s strength (180 MPa). The obtained results are explained by the dislocation diffusion mechanism in the volume of grains and beyond, due to thermal deformations during welding. Under operating conditions of internal pressure and cryogenic temperatures, the strength of the connection is ensured by the entire two-layer structure, and tightness is ensured by a vacuum-tight diffusion connection. The obtained strength of the connection (250 MPa) is sufficient under the specified operating conditions. Analysis of existing solutions in the literature review indicates that industrial application of technology for manufacturing bimetallic adapters from AISI 321 stainless steel and Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy is limited to butt joints with small geometric dimensions. Studies of the transition zone structure and diffusion processes in bimetallic joints with developed conical contact surfaces enabled determination of factors affecting joint structure and diffusion coefficients. The obtained bimetallic adapters, made of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and AISI 321 stainless steel, can be used to connect titanium high-pressure vessels with stainless steel pipelines. Full article

Many low-temperature applications, such as rocket engines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport pumps, necessitate ultra-low-temperature operational environments. In these conditions, the properties of lubricating oils and greases are significantly influenced by temperature, leading to the widespread adoption of solid lubrication. Currently, there is no international research regarding the influence of bearing coatings on the subsurface stress distribution in raceways. The Lundberg–Palmgren (L-P) theory states that subsurface stress variations govern bearing lifespan. Therefore, this paper utilizes existing formulas and Python programming to calculate the subsurface stress field of the inner raceway in a MoS2 solid-lubricated angular contact ball bearing. Furthermore, it analyzes the impacts of factors such as coating material properties, slide-to-roll ratio, traction coefficient, and load on its subsurface stress field. The results reveal that for solid-lubricated ball bearings, as the load increases, the maximum subsurface stress shifts closer to the center of the contact area, and the maximum subsurface shear stress becomes more concentrated. As the traction coefficient increases, the stress on the XZ-plane side increases and its position moves closer to the surface, while the opposite trend is observed on the other side. Additionally, the maximum value of the subsurface von Mises stress is approximately 0.64P0, and the maximum value of the orthogonal shear stress component τyz in the subsurface is approximately 0.25P0. High-titanium steel contains an elevated titanium content, which promotes the formation of abundant non-metallic inclusions in molten steel at high temperatures, including titanium oxides, sulfides, and nitrides. These inclusions adversely affect continuous casting operations and generate substantial internal/surface defects in cast slabs, ultimately compromising product performance and service reliability. Therefore, stringent control over the size, distribution, and population density of inclusions is imperative during the smelting of high-titanium steel to minimize their detrimental effects. In this paper, samples of high titanium steel (0.4% Ti, 0.004% N) casting billets were analyzed by industrial test sampling and full section comparative analysis of the samples at the center and quarter position. Using the Particle X inclusions, as well as automatic scanning and analyzing equipment, the number, size, location distribution, type and morphology of inclusions in different positions were systematically and comprehensively investigated. The results revealed that the primary inclusions in the steel consisted of TiN, TiS, TiC and their composite forms. TiN inclusions exhibited a size range of 1–5 µm on the slab surface, while larger particles of 2–10 μm were predominantly observed in the interior regions. Large-sized TiN inclusions (5–10 μm) are particularly detrimental, and this problematic type of inclusion predominantly concentrates in the interior regions of the steel slab. A gradual decrease in TiN inclusion number density was identified from the surface toward the core of the slab. Thermodynamic and kinetic calculations incorporating solute segregation effects demonstrated that TiN precipitates primarily in the liquid phase. The computational results showed excellent agreement with experimental data regarding the relationship between TiN size and solidification rate under different cooling conditions, confirming that increased cooling rates lead to reduced TiN particle sizes. Both enhanced cooling rates and reduced titanium content were found to effectively delay TiN precipitation, thereby suppressing the formation of large-sized TiN inclusions in high-titanium steels. Creating a comfortable microclimate in the premises of buildings is currently becoming one of the priorities in the field of architecture, construction and engineering systems. The increased attention from the scientific community to this topic is due not only to the desire to ensure healthy and favorable conditions for human life but also to the need for the rational use of energy resources. This area is becoming particularly relevant in the context of global challenges related to climate change, rising energy costs and increased environmental requirements. Practice shows that any technical solutions to ensure comfortable temperature, humidity and air exchange in rooms should be closely linked to the concept of energy efficiency. This allows one not only to reduce operating costs but also to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thereby contributing to sustainable development and environmental safety. In this connection, this study presents a parametric assessment of the influence of climatic and geometric factors on the aerodynamic characteristics of the air cavity, which affect the heat exchange process in the ventilated layer of curtain wall systems. The assessment was carried out using a combined analytical calculation method that provides averaged thermophysical parameters, such as mean air velocity (Vs), average internal surface temperature (tin.sav), and convective heat transfer coefficient (αs) within the air cavity. This study resulted in empirical average values, demonstrating that the air velocity within the cavity significantly depends on atmospheric pressure and façade height difference. For instance, a 10-fold increase in façade height leads to a 4.4-fold increase in air velocity. Furthermore, a three-fold variation in local resistance coefficients results in up to a two-fold change in airflow velocity. The cavity thickness, depending on atmospheric pressure, was also found to affect airflow velocity by up to 25%. Similar patterns were observed under ambient temperatures of +20 °C, +30 °C, and +40 °C. The analysis confirmed that airflow velocity is directly affected by cavity height, while the impact of solar radiation is negligible. However, based on the outcomes of the analytical model, it was concluded that the method does not adequately account for the effects of solar radiation and vertical temperature gradients on airflow within ventilated façades. This highlights the need for further full-scale experimental investigations under hot climate conditions in South Kazakhstan. The findings are expected to be applicable internationally to regions with comparable climatic characteristics. Ultimately, a correct understanding of thermophysical processes in such structures will support the advancement of trends such as Lightweight Design, Functionally Graded Design, and Value Engineering in the development of curtain wall systems, through the optimized selection of façade configurations, accounting for temperature loads under specific climatic and design conditions. In the present work, we design a laminated composite composed of molybdenum–rhenium alloy and silicon carbide ceramics for use in space reactors as a candidate structural material with neutron spectral shift properties. The influence of the internal microstructure on the mechanical properties is investigated by finite element simulation based on scale separation. The results of the study showed that the incorporation of gradient transition layers between the metallic and ceramic phases effectively mitigates thermally induced local stresses arising from mismatches in coefficients of thermal expansion. By optimizing the composition of the gradient transition layers, the stress distribution within the composite under operating conditions has been adjusted. As a result, the stress experienced by the alloy phase is significantly reduced, potentially extending the high-temperature creep rupture life. Full article

The escalating demand for efficient thermal management in lithium-ion batteries necessitates precise characterization of their thermal behavior under diverse operating conditions. This study develops a three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical–thermal coupling model grounded in porous electrode theory and energy conservation principles. The model solves multi-physics equations such as Fick’s law, Ohm’s law, and the Butler–Volmer equation, to resolve coupled electrochemical and thermal dynamics, with temperature-dependent parameters calibrated via the Arrhenius equation. Simulations under varying discharge rates reveal that high-rate discharges exacerbate internal heat accumulation. Low ambient temperatures amplify polarization effects. Forced convection cooling reduces surface temperatures but exacerbates core-to-surface thermal gradients. Structural optimization strategies demonstrate that enhancing through-thickness thermal conductivity reduces temperature differences. These findings underscore the necessity of balancing energy density and thermal management in lithium-ion battery design, proposing actionable insights such as preheating protocols for low-temperature operation, optimized cooling systems for high-rate scenarios, and material-level enhancements for improved thermal uniformity. In airport operations management, accurately estimating the service durations of ground support equipment such as Potable Water Trucks (PWTs) is essential for improving resource allocation efficiency and ensuring timely aircraft turnaround. Traditional estimation methods often use fixed averages or assume normal distributions, failing to capture real-world variability and extreme scenarios effectively. To address these limitations, this study performs a comprehensive statistical analysis of PWT service durations using operational data from Beijing Daxing International Airport (ZBAD) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (ZSPD). Employing chi-square goodness-of-fit tests, twenty probability distributions—including several heavy-tailed candidates—were rigorously evaluated under segmented scenarios, such as peak versus non-peak periods, varying temperature conditions, and different aircraft sizes. Results reveal that heavy-tailed distributions offer context-dependent advantages: the stable distribution exhibits superior modeling performance during peak operational periods, whereas the Burr distribution excels under non-peak conditions. Interestingly, contrary to existing operational assumptions, service durations at extremely high and low temperatures showed no significant statistical differences, prompting a reconsideration of temperature-dependent planning practices. Additionally, analysis by aircraft category showed that the Burr distribution best described service durations for large aircraft, while stable and log-logistic distributions were optimal for medium-sized aircraft. Numerical simulations confirmed these findings, demonstrating that the proposed heavy-tailed probabilistic models significantly improved resource prediction accuracy, reducing estimation errors by 13% to 25% compared to conventional methods. This research uniquely demonstrates the practical effectiveness of employing context-sensitive heavy-tailed distributions, substantially enhancing resource efficiency and operational reliability in airport ground handling management. To achieve an intelligent battery management system (BMS), it is crucial to accurately estimate the internal state of the power battery. The purpose of this review is to analyze the current status of research on multi-state estimation of power batteries, which mainly focuses on the estimation of state of charge (SOC), state of energy (SOE), state of health (SOH), state of power (SOP), state of temperature (SOT), and state of safety (SOS). Moreover, it also analyzes and prospects the research hotspots, development trends, and future challenges of battery state estimation. Aero-engine casings with excellent impact resistance are a practical requirement for ensuring the safe operation of aero-engines. In this paper, we report on numerical simulations of broken rotating blades impacting aluminum honeycomb sandwich casings under different temperatures and optimization of structural parameters. Firstly, an impact test system with adjustable temperature was established. Restricted by the temperature range of the strain gauge, ballistic impact tests were carried out at 25 °C, 100 °C, and 200 °C. Secondly, a finite element (FE) model including a pointed bullet and an aluminum honeycomb sandwich plate was built using LS-DYNA. The corresponding simulations of the strain–time curve and damage conditions showed good agreement with the test results. Then, the containment capability of the aluminum honeycomb sandwich aero-engine casing at different temperatures was analyzed based on the kinetic energy loss of the blade, the internal energy increment of the casing, and the containment state of the blade. Finally, with the design objectives of minimizing the casing mass and maximizing the blade kinetic energy loss, the structural parameters of the casing were optimized using the multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). This study proposes an iterative method based on thermal equilibrium equations to calculate the radial temperature distribution of long-span overhead transmission lines under forced convection. This paper takes the ACSR 500/280 conductor as the research object, establishes the three-dimensional finite element model considering the helix angle of the conductor, and carries out the experimental validation for the LGJ 300/40 conductor under the same conditions. The model captures internal temperature distribution through contour analysis and examines the effects of current, wind speed, and ambient temperature. Unlike traditional models assuming uniform conductor temperature, this method reveals internal thermal gradients and introduces a novel three-stage radial attenuation characterization. The iterative method converges and accurately reflects temperature variations. The results show a non-uniform radial distribution, with a maximum temperature difference of 8 °C and steeper gradients in aluminum than in steel. Increasing current raises temperature nonlinearly, enlarging the radial difference. Higher wind speeds reduce both temperature and radial difference, while rising ambient temperatures increase conductor temperature with a stable radial profile. This work provides valuable insights for the safe operation and optimal design of long-span transmission lines and supports future research on dynamic and environmental coupling effects. Full article

This paper presents the results of laboratory tests on the intensity of mass and heat exchange in a polytunnel, with a focus on the synergy between the polytunnel and a stone accumulator. The subject of study was a standard polytunnel made of double polythene sheathing. In the process of selecting the appropriate working conditions for such a polytunnel, the characteristic operating parameters were modeled and verified. They were related to the process of mass and energy exchange, which takes place in regular controlled-environment agriculture (CEA). Then, experimental tests of a heat accumulator on a fixed stone bed were carried out. The experiments were carried out for various accumulator surfaces ranging from 18.7 m2 to 74.8 m2, which was measured perpendicularly to the heat medium. To standardize the results obtained, the analysis included the unit area of the accumulator and the unit time of the experiment. In this way, 835 heat and mass exchange events were analyzed, including 437 accumulator charging processes and 398 discharging processes from April to October, which is a standard period of polytunnel use in the Polish climate. During the tests, internal and external parameters of the process were recorded, such as temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, wind speed and air flow speed in the accumulator system. Based on the parameters, a set of empirical relationships was developed using mathematical modeling. This provided the foundation for calculating heat gains as a result of its storage in a stone accumulator and its discharging process. The research results, including the developed dependencies, not only fill the scientific gap in the field of heat storage, but can also be used in engineering design of polytunnels supported by a heat storage system on a stone bed. In addition, the proposed methodology can be used in the study of other heat accumulators, not only in plant production facilities. Full article

We report a new concept of a pressure sensor fully made from polydimethylsiloxane with a solid core and porous cladding that operates through (frustrated) total internal reflection. A flexible and sensitive rectangular cross-section waveguide was fabricated via the casting and molding method. The waveguide’s optical losses can be temperature-controlled during the fabrication process by controlling the quantity of microbubbles incorporated (2% approximately for samples made at 70 °C). By controlling the precuring temperature, the microbubbles are incorporated into the waveguides during the simple and cost-effective fabrication process through the casting and molding method. For these samples, we measured good optical loss tradeoff of the order of 1.85 dB/cm, which means that it is possible to fabricate a solid-core/clad waveguide with porous cladding able to guide light properly. We demonstrated the microbubble concentration control in the waveguide, and we measured an average diameter of 239 ± 16 µm. A sensitivity to pressure of 0.1035 dB/kPa optical power loss was measured. The results show that in a biomedical dynamic pressure range (0 to 13.3 kPa), this new device indicates the critical pressure threshold level, which constitutes a crucial asset for potential applications such as pressure injury prevention.
