Structural Optimization of Numerical Simulation for Spherical Grid-Structured Microporous Aeration Reactor

As the core equipment for efficient wastewater treatment, the internal structure of microporous aeration bioreactors directly determines the mass transfer efficiency and treatment performance. Based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology, this study explores the optimization mechanism of a Spherical Grid-Structured on the internal flow field of the reactor through a 3D numerical simulation system, aiming to improve the aeration efficiency and resource utilization. This study used a combination of experimental and numerical simulations to compare and analyze different configurations of the Spherical Grid-Structure. The simulation results show that the optimal equilibrium of the flow field inside the reactor is achieved when the diameter of the grid sphere is 2980 mm: the average flow velocity is increased by 22%, the uniformity of the pressure distribution is improved by 25%, and the peak turbulent kinetic energy is increased by 30%. Based on the Kalman vortex street theory, the periodic vortex induced by the grid structure refines the bubble size to 50–80 microns, improves the oxygen transfer efficiency by 20%, increases the spatial distribution uniformity of bubbles by 35%, and significantly reduces the dead zone volume from 28% to 16.8%, which is a decrease of 40%. This study reveals the quantitative relationship between the structural parameters of the grid and the flow field characteristics through a pure numerical simulation, which provides a theoretical basis and quantifiable optimization scheme for the structural design of the microporous aeration bioreactor, which is of great significance in promoting the development of low-energy and high-efficiency wastewater treatment technology. To address the problems of the time consumption, labor intensiveness, easy contamination, uneven drying, and impact on the medicinal efficacy of Fritillaria ussuriensis in the traditional drying method, the hot-air-drying characteristics of Fritillaria ussuriensis were studied. The changes in the moisture ratio and drying rate of Fritillaria ussuriensis under different hot-air-drying conditions (45 °C, 55 °C, 65 °C) were compared and analyzed. Six common mathematical models were used to fit the moisture change law, and it was found that the cubic model was the most suitable for describing the drying characteristics of Fritillaria ussuriensis. The R2 values after fitting under the three temperature conditions were all greater than 0.99, and the maximum was achieved at 45 °C. Based on the principle of hot-air drying, a drying device for Fritillaria ussuriensis with a processing capacity of 15 kg/h was designed. It adopted a thermal circulation structure of inner and outer drying ovens, with the heating chamber separated from the drying chamber. The structural parameters were optimized based on Fluent simulation analysis. After optimization, the temperature of each layer was stable at 338 K ± 2 K, and the pressure field and velocity field were evenly distributed. The drying process parameters of Fritillaria ussuriensis were optimized based on response surface analysis, and the optimal process parameters were obtained as follows: inlet temperature: 338 K (65 °C), inlet air velocity: 3 m/s, and drying time: 10 h. The simulation results showed that the predicted moisture content of Fritillaria ussuriensis under the optimal working conditions was 12.58%, the temperature difference of Fritillaria ussuriensis at different positions was within 0.8 °C, and the humidity deviation was about 1%. A prototype of the drying device was built, and the drying test of Fritillaria ussuriensis was carried out. It was found that the temperature and moisture content of Fritillaria ussuriensis were consistent with the simulation results and met the design requirements, verifying the rationality of the device structure and the reliability of the simulation model. This design can significantly improve the distribution of the internal flow field and temperature field of the drying device, improve the drying quality and production efficiency of Fritillaria ussuriensis, and provide a technical reference for the Chinese herbal medicine-drying industry. The converter transformer is subjected to AC/DC composite voltage during operation, and the sealed and time-varying internal state makes its electric field distribution and charge accumulation unable to be monitored in real-time experiments. In this paper, aiming at the influence of bubbles in the oil passage of the converter transformer on charge accumulation before discharge, a simulation model in a laminar flow environment is established, and four different calculation conditions are set to simulate the charge accumulation in 1 s. It is found that under laminar flow conditions, the trapped bubbles on the insulation paper wall play an obvious role in intensifying the charge accumulation in transformer oil, and the extreme range of charge density will increase by about 104 times. Bubbles aggravate the electric field distortion, and the insulation strength of bubbles is lower, which becomes the weak link of insulation. In the laminar flow environment, the oil flow will take away part of the accumulated charge in the oil, but in the case of trapped bubbles, the charge accumulation in the insulating paper will increase from the order of 10−2 to 10−1. In the case of no bubbles, the transformer oil layer flow will increase the charge accumulation in the insulation paper by 4–5 orders of magnitude. Therefore, it can be seen that the flow of transformer oil will increase the deterioration level of insulation paper. And when the transformer oil is already in the laminar flow state, the influence of laminar flow velocity on charge accumulation is not obvious. The research results in this paper provide a time-varying simulation reference state for the charge accumulation problem that cannot be measured experimentally under normal charged operation conditions, and we obtain quantitative numerical results, which can provide a valuable reference for the study of transformer operation and insulation discharge characteristics. A slanted axial-flow pump is extensively applied in coastal pumping stations; however, severe bias flow within the outlet passage will result in unstable operation and low efficiency of the slanted axial flow pump system. In order to mitigate bias flow in a slanted axial-flow pump outlet passage, seven exit setting angle schemes of the guide vanes were designed. The influence mechanisms of the guide vane exit setting angle on internal flow characteristics, hydraulic loss, flow deviation coefficient, vortex evolution patterns, and pump system efficiency were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that under design flow conditions, as the exit setting angle of the guide vane ranges from 90° to 105°, the flow field in the first half of the guide vane remains essentially the same. The low-velocity region at the guide vane outlet demonstrates initial contraction followed by gradual expansion with increasing stagger angles. Looking downstream within the flow passage from the left to the right, the hydraulic loss in the outlet passage goes up after an initial descending trend as the exit setting angle increases. When the exit setting angle is 97.5°, the bias coefficient of the outlet passage is 1.031. At this point, the vortex core distribution intensity within the outlet passage reaches a minimum, corresponding to the lowest recorded hydraulic loss of 0.230 m. Compared with the original guide vane scheme, the scheme with an angle set at 97.5° can improve the pump system efficiency of the slanted axial flow pump system, whether the flow is set at a design point or at a large point, and the pump system efficiency is increased by 2.3% under design flow conditions. With the global transition towards renewable energy, pumped storage has become a pivotal technology for large-scale energy storage, playing an essential role in peak load regulation, frequency control, and ensuring the stability of modern power systems. As the core equipment of pumped storage power stations, pump-turbines operate under complex and frequently changing conditions. These units are required to switch repeatedly between pumping, generating, and transitional modes, giving rise to significant fluid–structure interactions (FSIs). Such interactions have a profound impact on the operational performance and stability of the units. This review provides a comprehensive summary of current research on FSIs in pump-turbines, encompassing both experimental investigations and numerical simulations. Key topics discussed include internal flow dynamics, vibration and acoustic characteristics, and structural responses such as runner deformation and stress distribution. Various numerical coupling strategies for FSI modeling are also examined in detail. Despite progress in this field, several challenges remain, including the complexity of multidisciplinary coupling, the difficulty in developing and solving accurate models, and limitations in predictive capabilities. This review highlights the critical requirements for advancing FSI research in pump-turbines and identifies gaps in the current literature that warrant further investigation. Full article

To achieve efficient and sustainable marine aquaculture, STAR-CCM+ was used to simulate the internal and external field characteristics of a semi-submersible aquaculture platform based on a porous media model, focusing on the influence of incoming flow velocity and net solidity ratio. The results indicate that the flow field distribution around the platform exhibits no significant regularity and that low-velocity vortex regions are primarily concentrated near the pillars and nets. After velocity attenuation, the velocity reduction coefficients at the centers of the three cages are 90.26%, 63.65%, and 52.56%, respectively. Furthermore, the velocity attenuation inside the cages is minimally influenced by incoming flow velocity, with a maximum difference of 3.10%. In contrast, differences in net solidity ratio significantly affect velocity attenuation, particularly in downstream regions. The velocity reduction coefficient in the third cage varies by up to 43.25% depending on the net solidity ratio. These findings provide practical insights for the engineering design and application of aquaculture platforms. Full article

This paper presents the results of laboratory tests on the intensity of mass and heat exchange in a polytunnel, with a focus on the synergy between the polytunnel and a stone accumulator. The subject of study was a standard polytunnel made of double polythene sheathing. In the process of selecting the appropriate working conditions for such a polytunnel, the characteristic operating parameters were modeled and verified. They were related to the process of mass and energy exchange, which takes place in regular controlled-environment agriculture (CEA). Then, experimental tests of a heat accumulator on a fixed stone bed were carried out. The experiments were carried out for various accumulator surfaces ranging from 18.7 m2 to 74.8 m2, which was measured perpendicularly to the heat medium. To standardize the results obtained, the analysis included the unit area of the accumulator and the unit time of the experiment. In this way, 835 heat and mass exchange events were analyzed, including 437 accumulator charging processes and 398 discharging processes from April to October, which is a standard period of polytunnel use in the Polish climate. During the tests, internal and external parameters of the process were recorded, such as temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, wind speed and air flow speed in the accumulator system. Based on the parameters, a set of empirical relationships was developed using mathematical modeling. This provided the foundation for calculating heat gains as a result of its storage in a stone accumulator and its discharging process. The research results, including the developed dependencies, not only fill the scientific gap in the field of heat storage, but can also be used in engineering design of polytunnels supported by a heat storage system on a stone bed. In addition, the proposed methodology can be used in the study of other heat accumulators, not only in plant production facilities. Full article

On Control Synthesis of Hydraulic Servomechanisms in Flight Controls Applications

This paper presents some of the most significant findings in the design of a hydraulic servomechanism for flight controls, which were primarily achieved by the first author during his activity in an aviation institute. These results are grouped into four main topics. The first one outlines a classical theory, from the 1950s–1970s, of the analysis of nonlinear automatic systems and namely the issue of absolute stability. The uninformed public may be misled by the adjective “absolute”. This is not a “maximalist” solution of stability but rather highlights in the system of equations a nonlinear function that describes, for the case of hydraulic servomechanisms, the flow-control dependence in the distributor spool. This function is odd, and it is therefore located in quadrants 1 and 3. The decision regarding stability is made within the so-called Lurie problem and is materialized by a matrix inequality, called the Lefschetz condition, which must be satisfied by the parameters of the electrohydraulic servomechanism and also by the components of the control feedback vector. Another approach starts from a classical theorem of V. M. Popov, extended in a stochastic framework by T. Morozan and I. Ursu, which ends with the description of the local and global spool valve flow-control characteristics that ensure stability in the large with respect to bounded perturbations for the mechano-hydraulic servomechanism. We add that a conjecture regarding the more pronounced flexibility of mathematical models in relation to mathematical instruments (theories) was used. Furthermore, the second topic concerns, the importance of the impedance characteristic of the mechano-hydraulic servomechanism in preventing flutter of the flight controls is emphasized. Impedance, also called dynamic stiffness, is defined as the ratio, in a dynamic regime, between the output exerted force (at the actuator rod of the servomechanism) and the displacement induced by this force under the assumption of a blocked input. It is demonstrated in the paper that there are two forms of the impedance function: one that favors the appearance of flutter and another that allows for flutter damping. It is interesting to note that these theoretical considerations were established in the institute’s reports some time before their introduction in the Aviation Regulation AvP.970. However, it was precisely the absence of the impedance criterion in the regulation at the appropriate time that ultimately led, by chance or not, to a disaster: the crash of a prototype due to tailplane flutter. A third topic shows how an important problem in the theory of automatic systems of the 1970s–1980s, namely the robust synthesis of the servomechanism, is formulated, applied and solved in the case of an electrohydraulic servomechanism. In general, the solution of a robust servomechanism problem consists of two distinct components: a servo-compensator, in fact an internal model of the exogenous dynamics, and a stabilizing compensator. These components are adapted in the case of an electrohydraulic servomechanism. In addition to the classical case mentioned above, a synthesis problem of an anti-windup (anti-saturation) compensator is formulated and solved. The fourth topic, and the last one presented in detail, is the synthesis of a fuzzy supervised neurocontrol (FSNC) for the position tracking of an electrohydraulic servomechanism, with experimental validation, in the laboratory, of this control law. The neurocontrol module is designed using a single-layered perceptron architecture. Neurocontrol is in principle optimal, but it is not free from saturation. To this end, in order to counteract saturation, a Mamdani-type fuzzy logic was developed, which takes control when neurocontrol has saturated. It returns to neurocontrol when it returns to normal, respectively, when saturation is eliminated. What distinguishes this FSNC law is its simplicity and efficiency and especially the fact that against quite a few opponents in the field, it still works very well on quite complicated physical systems. Finally, a brief section reviews some recent works by the authors, in which current approaches to hydraulic servomechanisms are presented: the backstepping control synthesis technique, input delay treated with Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals, and critical stability treated with Lyapunov–Malkin theory. Internal soil erosion caused by water infiltration around defective buried pipes poses a significant threat to the long-term stability of underground infrastructures such as pipelines and highway culverts. This study employs a coupled computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD–DEM) framework to simulate the detachment, transport, and redistribution of soil particles under varying infiltration pressures and pipe defect geometries. Using ANSYS Fluent (CFD) and Rocky (DEM), the simulation resolves both the fluid flow field and granular particle dynamics, capturing erosion cavity formation, void evolution, and soil particle transport in three dimensions. The results reveal that increased infiltration pressure and defect size in the buried pipe significantly accelerate the process of erosion and sinkhole formation, leading to potentially unstable subsurface conditions. Visualization of particle migration, sinkhole development, and soil velocity distributions provides insight into the mechanisms driving localized failure. The findings highlight the importance of considering fluid–particle interactions and defect characteristics in the design and maintenance of buried structures, offering a predictive basis for assessing erosion risk and infrastructure vulnerability. Hydraulic Performance and Flow Characteristics of a High-Speed Centrifugal Pump Based on Multi-Objective Optimization

Pump-driven liquid cooling systems are widely utilized in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) electronic thermal management. As a critical power component, the miniaturization and lightweight design of the pump are essential. Increasing the operating speed of the pump allows for a reduction in impeller size while maintaining hydraulic performance, thereby significantly decreasing the overall volume and mass. However, high-speed operation introduces considerable internal flow losses, placing stricter demands on the geometric design and flow-field compatibility of the impeller. In this study, a miniature high-speed centrifugal pump (MHCP) was investigated, and a multi-objective optimization of the impeller was carried out using response surface methodology (RSM) to improve internal flow characteristics and overall hydraulic performance. Numerical simulations demonstrated strong predictive capability, and experimental results validated the model’s accuracy. At the design condition (10,000 rpm, 4.8 m3/h), the pump achieved a head of 46.1 m and an efficiency of 49.7%, corresponding to its best efficiency point (BEP). Sensitivity analysis revealed that impeller outlet diameter and blade outlet angle were the most influential parameters affecting pump performance. Following the optimization, the pump head increased by 3.7 m, and the hydraulic efficiency improved by 4.8%. In addition, the pressure distribution and streamlines within the impeller exhibited better uniformity, while the turbulent kinetic energy near the blade suction surface and at the impeller outlet was markedly decreased. This work provides theoretical support and design guidance for the efficient application of MHCPs in UAV thermal management systems. Full article

Digitalization is leading the development direction of oilfields in the future. And the precise measurement of produced fluids is the core component supporting the construction of digital oilfields. To mitigate the adverse effects of liquid carryover from gas wells on metering devices at the wellhead, this paper proposed a compact tandem-type gas–liquid separator structure (CTGLS) based on the principle of cyclone separation. The internal flow field characteristics and separation performance of the gas–liquid separator were analyzed through numerical simulation and experimental methods. The influence of various liquid concentrations, inlet flow rates, and overflow split ratios on the velocity field, medium distribution, and separation efficiency of gas–liquid separators was obtained. The optimal regulatory relationship of the underflow split ratio under different operating parameters was elucidated. The results indicate that, as the liquid concentration increases, the axial velocity changes significantly within the underflow region of the secondary separator, while the liquid volume fraction in the cyclone chamber increases gradually. Increasing the inlet flow rate and the split ratio can enhance the axial velocity at the overflow outlet, but it will reduce the liquid phase separation efficiency. The mathematical model correlating the operating parameters with the separation efficiency was established using the response surface method. And the best operation regulation mechanism of the split ratio was obtained under different inlet flow rates and liquid concentrations. Full article

In practical applications, the fully enclosed structure is always required by self-starting permanent magnet synchronous motors for safety. However, internal heat dissipation can be obstructed as a result, which affects operational reliability. To resolve the issue, this study takes a 3 kW self-starting permanent magnet synchronous motor as the research object. Based on fluid dynamics and fluid solid coupling heat transfer theory, the model is reasonably simplified according to the characteristics of the structure of motor cooling, and basic assumptions and boundary conditions are given to establish a three-dimensional, whole machine solution domain model. The finite element method is used to numerically analyze and calculate under rated conditions. The fluid flow characteristics, heat transfer characteristics, motion trajectories of the cooling medium on the surface of the external casing, fan, and internal stator and rotor domains, and winding ends are analyzed. Therefore, the internal rheological characteristics and temperature rise distribution law of the self-starting permanent magnet synchronous motor can be revealed. Based on the aforementioned research, a novel method to design the wind spur structure on the surface of the rotor end is proposed. By comparing the simulation results of the fluid field and temperature field of the motor under wind spur structures with different lengths and equidistant distributions in the circumferential direction of the rotor end, the influence of the convective heat characteristics can be systematically studied. Lastly, the accuracy of the calculation results and the rationality of the solution method are verified through experiments of temperature rise, and the flow temperature distribution characteristics of the motor can be optimized by the wind spur structure, which can be used in practical applications. This study presents a comprehensive numerical investigation into the influence of blade profile geometry on the internal flow dynamics and hydraulic performance of Cross-Flow Turbines (CFTs) under varying runner speeds. Four blade configurations, flat, round, sharp, and aerodynamic, were systematically evaluated using steady-state, two-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The Shear Stress Transport (SST) k–ω turbulence model was employed to resolve the flow separation, recirculation, and turbulence across both energy conversion stages of the turbine. The simulations were performed across runner speeds ranging from 270 to 940 rpm under a constant head of 10 m. The performance metrics, including the torque, hydraulic efficiency, water volume fraction, pressure distribution, and velocity field characteristics, were analyzed in detail. The aerodynamic blade consistently outperformed the other geometries, achieving a peak efficiency of 83.5% at 800 rpm, with improved flow attachment, reduced vortex shedding, and lower exit pressure. Sharp blades also demonstrated competitive efficiency within a narrower optimal speed range. In contrast, the flat and round blades exhibited higher turbulence and recirculation, particularly at off-optimal speeds. The results underscore the pivotal role of blade edge geometry in enhancing energy recovery, suppressing flow instabilities, and optimizing the stage-wise performance in CFTs. These findings offer valuable insights for the design of high-efficiency, site-adapted turbines suitable for micro-hydropower applications. Full article

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) Brayton cycle has emerged as a hot topic of research in the energy field. Among its key components, the sCO2 compressor has received significant attention. In particular, axial-flow sCO2 compressors are increasingly being investigated as power systems advance toward high power scaling. This paper reviews global research progress in this field. As for performance characteristics, currently, sCO2 axial-flow compressors are mostly designed with large mass flow rates (>100 kg/s), near-critical inlet conditions, multistage configurations with relatively low stage pressure ratios (1.1–1.2), and high isentropic efficiencies (87–93%). As for internal flow characteristics, although similarity laws remain applicable to sCO2 turbomachinery, the flow dynamics are strongly influenced by abrupt variations in thermophysical properties (e.g., viscosities, sound speeds, and isentropic exponents). High Reynolds numbers reduce frictional losses and enhance flow stability against separation but increase sensitivity to wall roughness. The locally reduced sound speed may induce shock waves and choke, while drastic variation in the isentropic exponent makes the multistage matching difficult and disperses normalized performance curves. Additionally, the quantitative impact of a near-critical phase change remains insufficiently understood. As for the experimental investigation, so far, it has been publicly shown that only the University of Notre Dame has conducted an axial-flow compressor experimental test, for the first stage of a 10 MW sCO2 multistage axial-flow compressor. Although the measured efficiency is higher than that of all known sCO2 centrifugal compressors, the inlet conditions evidently deviate from the critical point, limiting the applicability of the results to sCO2 power cycles. As for design and optimization, conventional design methodologies for axial-flow compressors require adaptations to incorporate real-gas property correction models, re-evaluations of maximum diffusion (e.g., the DF parameter) for sCO2 applications, and the intensification of structural constraints due to the high pressure and density of sCO2. In conclusion, further research should focus on two aspects. The first is to carry out more fundamental cascade experiments and numerical simulations to reveal the complex mechanisms for the near-critical, transonic, and two-phase flow within the sCO2 axial-flow compressor. The second is to develop loss models and design a space suitable for sCO2 multistage axial-flow compressors, thus improving the design tools for high-efficiency and wide-margin sCO2 axial-flow compressors. Film cooling, a vital method for controlling surface temperatures in components subjected to intense heat, strives to enhance efficiency through innovative technological advancements. Over the last several decades, considerable advancements have been made in film cooling technologies for applications such as liquid rocket engines, combustion chambers, nozzle sections, gas turbine components, and hypersonic vehicles, all of which operate under extreme temperatures. This review presents an in-depth investigation of film cooling, its applications, and its key mechanisms and performance characteristics. The review also explores design optimization for combustion chamber components and examines the role of gaseous film cooling in nozzle systems, supported by experimental and numerical validation. Gas turbine cooling relies on integrated methods, including internal and external cooling, material selection, and coolant treatment to prevent overheating. Notably, the cross-flow jet in blade cooling improves heat transfer and reduces thermal fatigue. Film cooling is an indispensable technique for addressing the challenges of high-speed and hypersonic flight, aided by cutting-edge injection methods and advanced transpiration coolants. Special attention is given to factors influencing film cooling performance, as well as state-of-the-art developments in the field. The challenges related to film cooling are reviewed and presented, along with the difficulties in resolving them. Suggestions for addressing these problems in future research are also provided.
