The tilework of Talavera de la Reina (Toledo, Spain) was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019, with one of its landmarks being the tilework preserved in the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Prado, known as the ‘Sistine Chapel of Talavera tilework’. In the entrance portico to the Basilica, we find the ceramic panel of Virgins and Tercios in front of Christ, which should be reinterpreted as two different compositions: virgins in front of Mary and tercios in front of Christ (milites Christi), on which we will focus our research. The analysis of the location and state of conservation of the pieces that currently make up this panel, as well as the existence of pieces in various areas of the Basilica, which most likely belong to each of the compositions, allow us to propose a recomposition and reintegration of elements that would enable a better view and interpretation of these panels. To this end, a scientific methodology and appropriate intervention criteria are proposed to completely recompose this panel through the restoration of all the necessary pieces. This example can be extrapolated to the rest of the altarpieces and interior panels of the Basilica, which would facilitate their proper conservation, interpretation and dissemination. Full article

Gastronomic tourism has emerged as a significant driver of destination competitiveness, cultural preservation, and sustainable development. This comprehensive review synthesizes the scientific literature published between 2010 and 2025, examining the evolution of gastronomic tourism research, global trends, sustainability dimensions, and emerging challenges. Through systematic analysis of 150 peer-reviewed articles from major academic databases, this paper identifies key themes including cultural heritage preservation, sustainability practices, digital transformation, and educational innovations. The findings reveal a growing recognition of gastronomy as intangible cultural heritage, increased focus on farm-to-fork practices, and the transformative role of social media in destination branding. Despite the rapid growth of gastronomic tourism research, important gaps remain. The literature lacks standardized sustainability indicators, limiting comparability across studies, while cross-cultural comparative research and interdisciplinary integration remain insufficiently developed. Addressing these gaps is essential for advancing theoretical coherence and supporting evidence-based practice in gastronomic tourism. Full article

Traditional Turkish marbling (Ebru) art is an intangible cultural heritage characterized by highly asymmetric, fluid, and non-reproducible patterns, making its long-term preservation and large-scale dissemination challenging. It is highly sensitive to environmental conditions, making it enormously difficult to mass produce while maintaining its original aesthetic qualities. A data-driven generative model is therefore required to create unlimited, high-fidelity digital surrogates that safeguard this UNESCO heritage against physical loss and enable large-scale cultural applications. This study introduces a deep generative modeling framework for the digital reconstruction of traditional Turkish marbling (Ebru) art using a Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DCGAN). A dataset of 20,400 image patches, systematically derived from 17 original marbling works, was used to train the proposed model. The framework aims to mathematically capture the asymmetric, fluid, and stochastic nature of Ebru patterns, enabling the reproduction of their aesthetic structure in a digital medium. The generated images were evaluated using multiple quantitative and perceptual metrics, including Fréchet Inception Distance (FID), Kernel Inception Distance (KID), Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity (LPIPS), and PRDC-based indicators (Precision, Recall, Density, Coverage). For experimental validation, the proposed DCGAN framework is additionally compared against a Vanilla GAN baseline trained under identical conditions, highlighting the advantages of convolutional architectures for modeling marbling textures. The results show that the DCGAN model achieved a high level of realism and diversity without mode collapse or overfitting, producing images that were perceptually close to authentic marbling works. In addition to the quantitative evaluation, expert qualitative assessment by a traditional Ebru artist confirmed that the model reproduced the organic textures, color dynamics, and compositional asymmetrical characteristic of real marbling art. The proposed approach demonstrates the potential of deep generative models for the digital preservation, dissemination, and reinterpretation of intangible cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO. The Wua-Lai silvercraft community in Chiang Mai is experiencing a widening disconnect with younger visitors, raising concerns about the erosion of intangible cultural heritage. This study evaluates “Silver Craft Journey,” a location-based augmented reality (LBAR) system designed to revitalize cultural engagement and enhance cultural-heritage experience through context-aware, gamified exploration. A quasi-experimental field study with 254 participants across three age groups examined the system’s impact on cultural-heritage experience, knowledge acquisition, and real-world engagement. Results demonstrate substantial knowledge gains, with a mean increase of 7.74 points (SD = 4.37) and a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.77), supporting the effectiveness of LBAR in supporting tangible and intangible heritage understanding. Behavioral log data reveal clear age-related engagement patterns: older participants (41–51) showed declining mission completion rates and reduced interaction times at later points of interest, which may reflect increased cognitive and physical demands during extended AR navigation under real-world conditions. These findings underscore the potential of location-based AR to enhance cultural-heritage experience in real-world settings while highlighting the importance of age-adaptive interaction and route-design strategies. The study contributes a replicable model for integrating digital tourism, embodied AR experience, and community-based heritage preservation. Full article

Interventions on Heritage Buildings (HBs) involve significant challenges due to their tangible (embodied in the material, architectural, physical and technical integrity of the cultural asset), and intangible values (linked to socio-historical–cultural and collective identity, memory, customs and symbols meanings), which must be preserved while also adapting to current sustainability and circular economy goals. However, current conservation and management practices often lack systematic tools to trace, assess, and organise material and component information, hindering the implementation of circular strategies. In line with the European Union’s objectives for climate neutrality and resource efficiency and sufficiency, Material and Product Passports (MPPs) have emerged as digital tools that enhance data traceability, interoperability and transparency throughout a building’s lifecycle. This paper examines the potential of MPPs to support circular management of HBs by analysing the structure of MPPs and outlining the information flows generated by rehabilitation, maintenance and adaptive reuse strategies. A mixed methods approach, combining literature review and data structure analysis, is adopted to identify how the different categories of data produced during maintenance, rehabilitation and adaptive reuse processes can be integrated into MPP modules. The research highlights the conceptual opportunities of MPPs to document and interlink historical, cultural, and technical data, thereby improving decision-making and transparency across intervention stages. The analysis suggests that adapting MPPs to the specificities of historic contexts, such as authenticity preservation, reversibility, and contextual sensitivity, can foster innovative, sustainable, and circular practices in the conservation and management of HBs. The IPCC has emphasised the increasing impacts of climate change across multiple sectors, including cultural heritage. In response, UNESCO launched the Policy Document on Climate Action for World Heritage in 2023, offering guidance on mitigation strategies for historic sites. Cultural heritage faces risks not only from sudden catastrophic events—such as floods, droughts, and wildfires—but also from the gradual deterioration of buildings and artefacts due to shifting environmental conditions. Climate change further affects the indoor microclimate of heritage sites, including museums, archives, and libraries, which are critical to the long-term preservation of cultural assets. Heritage, including heritage buildings and both tangible and intangible heritages, are subject to changes; therefore, their conservation should be assessed to identify sustainable approaches. This study investigates how climate change and microclimate alterations impact the conservation of historic buildings without modern climate control, using the Malatestiana Library—a UNESCO Memory of the World site—as a case study. The library has preserved a remarkably stable indoor environment for centuries, without the introduction of heating, cooling, or major restorations. A monitoring campaign during the summer of 2024 assessed the effects of extreme heat events on the library’s microclimate, comparing two internal spaces to examine the attic’s role in mitigating thermal stress. Data from the 2024 heatwave are also compared with similar data collected in 2013. Results show a marked shift toward a more tropical indoor climate over the past decade, signalling new threats to the preservation of historic materials. These findings highlight the urgent need for adaptive conservation strategies to address the evolving challenges posed by climate change. Full article

This study examines how digital transformational leadership (DTL) drives superior and enduring organizational performance through the mediating roles of organizational agility (OA) and digital transformation (DT) while assessing the contingent moderating role of digital culture (DC). Anchored in the Resource-Based View (RBV), the study conceptualizes DTL as a strategic intangible capability that enables the orchestration of digital and agile resources into sustained performance outcomes in digitally turbulent environments. Data were collected from 284 senior and middle managers across 13 Palestinian commercial banks—a highly regulated sector undergoing intensive digital pressure in an emerging-economy context—using an online survey. The proposed relationships were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4.0. The results reveal that DTL significantly enhances both OA and DT, which in turn contribute positively to organizational performance. OA and DT operate as both independent and sequential mediators, uncovering a multistage capability-building pathway through which leadership fosters long-term adaptability and resilience. The findings further indicate that digital culture conditions the effectiveness of leadership-driven transformation, shaping how digital initiatives consolidate into enduring organizational routines rather than short-term efficiency gains. By reframing sustainable transformation as the continuity of organizational performance through agility, digital renewal, and cultural alignment—rather than as an ESG outcome alone—this study refines RBV boundary conditions in digital contexts. The study contributes theoretically by clarifying how leadership-enabled capabilities generate sustainable competitive advantage and offers actionable managerial insights for cultivating agility, embedding digital transformation, and strengthening cultural readiness to support long-term organizational resilience. As unique forms of intangible cultural heritage of Inner Mongolia, traditional musical instruments from the region have undergone significant changes alongside socioeconomic development and evolving performance styles. The performance environment has transitioned from early outdoor and non-fixed venues to professional concert halls. Existing research has demonstrated a correlation between the acoustic quality of performance halls and their objective architectural acoustic parameters. However, no studies have been conducted in China on the acoustic parameters suitable for the performance environments of traditional Inner Mongolian musical instruments. This study determined the optimal acoustic environment for performances of traditional musical instruments, unique to Inner Mongolia, by employing computer simulations and subjective listening experiments in representative performance spaces. Participants were asked to select preferred audio samples of different reverberation times, generated by convolving the impulse responses of simulated spatial models with dry recordings of the instruments. Statistical analysis of the results revealed that the optimal reverberation times for traditional Inner Mongolian instruments are 1.2 s and 1.4 s in a theater space, and 0.9 s and 1.1 s in a rectangular space. Furthermore, under the influence of different factors, the four instruments exhibited distinct preferences for optimal reverberation values in the sampled spaces. Full article

Cultural ecosystem services are intangible benefits people gain from ecosystems that enhance well-being. However, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment indicates that about 70% of cultural ecosystem services are degraded or unsustainably used. To mitigate this decline, many regions and policies promote the assessment and mapping of cultural ecosystem services. Since 2005, related research and publications have increased, yet place-based cultural ecosystem services assessments remain limited. This study aims to clarify key aspects of cultural ecosystem services assessment, including categories, methods, and case study area types. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses method, this study systematically reviewed 163 articles on place-based cultural ecosystem services assessment from Web of Science and Scopus from 2010 to September 2024. The results show diverse ecosystem types, assessment categories, and methods, with urban ecosystems most frequently studied. Fourteen cultural ecosystem service categories were identified based on term definitions and relevance. Non-monetary methods, such as questionnaires and social media data, were most commonly applied. Future research trends will focus on spatial visualization and mapping of supply and demand of cultural ecosystem services, emphasizing public perception. These findings provide planners and decision-makers with more detailed and specific information to better manage, design, and develop regions in a sustainable and culturally sensitive way. Cultural practices such as Catalonia’s correfocs (fire parades) represent a vibrant expression of intangible heritage. Outdoor activities are conditioned by weather and threatened by climate change. This study analyses the long-term evolution of night-time thermal conditions during correfoc festivals performed in six Catalan towns located on the coast and in the pre-coastal region from 1950 to 2023, using reanalysis-based indicators of air temperature, humidity, and perceived heat as a first exploratory step prior to incorporating in situ meteorological records. Specifically, the Heat Index (HI) and the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) were computed for the typical event window (21:00–23:00 local time) to assess changes in human thermal comfort. Results reveal a clear and statistically significant warming trend in most pre-coastal locations—particularly Reus, El Vendrell, and Vilafranca—while coastal cities such as Barcelona exhibit weaker or non-significant changes, likely due to maritime moderation. The frequency and intensity of positive temperature anomalies have increased since the 1990s, with a growing proportion of events falling into “caution” or “moderate heat stress” categories under HI and UTCI classifications. These findings demonstrate that correfocs are now celebrated under markedly warmer night-time conditions than in the mid-twentieth century, implying a tangible rise in thermal discomfort and potential safety risks for participants. By integrating climatic and cultural perspectives, this research shows that rising night-time heat can constrain attendance, participation conditions, and event scheduling for correfocs, thereby directly exposing weather-sensitive form of intangible cultural heritage to climate risks. It therefore underscores the need for climate adaptation frameworks and to promote context-specific strategies to sustain these community-based traditions under ongoing Mediterranean warming. An architectural and cultural heritage analysis is performed in this study by systematically examining the social significance of historical hammams in today’s Historical Peninsula of Istanbul, which symbolize washing–cleansing–hygiene activities and also have socialization–entertainment–economic dimensions, as well as reflecting urban development and change. Within this scope, 81 historic hammams listed as cultural heritage sites were researched using a multi-layered dataset that integrates on-site morphological studies and historical maps. The physical and intangible transformations of these hammams are analyzed based on a database of 24 examples documented through in situ observations of hammams still in active use, revealing the effects of changing cultural and historical contexts on these buildings. The other 19 examples, which are not currently operating as hammams but still exist as buildings, are assessed to determine their current purpose or whether they are undergoing restoration. The findings reveal the evolution of hammams and identify dominant architectural typologies, such as double and single hammams. In this paper, a conceptual framework is presented that places the cultural heritage–tourism combination within a broader discussion while also revealing the current state of hammams in the Historical Peninsula of Istanbul, the primary source of their physical and cultural existence and development. This study demonstrates that hammams constitute an important part and provide concrete evidence of regional cultural heritage areas, human–environment interactions, and the spatial representation of urban memory regarding preservation and transmission to future generations. Bullfighting in the bullrings of the Iberian Peninsula, with its most direct antecedent in the Roman amphitheatre, represents an established tradition that has been exported to the Americas. Bullfighting in Portugal shares general aspects with the bullfighting culture in neighbouring Spain. However, in Portugal, particular aspects are present: there is a preference for horseback bullfighting (cavaleiros) and forcados (a special type of bullfighting), and the bull is not killed in the ring. In this work, the authors aim to contribute to the acoustic narrative of bullfighting by linking architecture with the sounds of voice, environment, music, and silence that manifest in the emblematic Campo Pequeno bullring in Lisbon, thereby providing valuable information regarding its unknown intangible acoustic heritage. The presence of a mobile roof increases the number of reflections in the bullring, leads to a more linear energy decay, and prevents the acoustic inconveniences of roofless performance venues. The 3D impulse response measurements enable an overall monaural parametric analysis, together with the analysis of the distribution of sound energy in the time–frequency domain of early reflections, to determine the acoustic signature of the venue complemented with the direction of arrival of these early reflections. This study investigates the traditional life within Al-Gh’deer Market Square, which constitutes a fundamental component of the vernacular urban fabric of Sidi Okba’s old city from a sensorial perspective. This oasis, located in the southeast of Algeria, is currently severely degraded and requires urban and architectural preservation. However, the sensory experiences that once characterised traditional urban life have not yet been systematically explored. The aim of this study is to fill this gap by analysing the historical atmospheres depicted in various literary and iconographic sources created by French and European explorers who visited Algeria during the colonial period. This research highlights each component of the “Al-Gh’deer” market square, which had a sensory impact on writers and photographers during their visit to Sidi Okba. This impact is revealed through the different tangible and intangible signals generated by these components, which were then felt and described textually and/or visually by the travellers. To this end, the thematic content analysis is used as a research technique in order to analyse this textual corpus, whilst the image formatting and staging constitute the method used for the iconographic corpus study. The first method makes it possible to detect the most relayed ambiences by travellers. This is revealed by the identification and computation of the associated words and/or expressions within the considered textual corpus. The second technique consists of the extraction of the elements generating the physical signals that should create a sensory relationship with the people within the scene or looking at it. The identified ambiences among the two corpora are crossed in order to determine the most felt ones in the marketplace as well as the various components generating them. The outcomes of this research work would serve as a basis for revitalisation initiatives within the frame of socio-economic and cultural development projects. Full article

Traditional villages stand as irreplaceable treasures of global cultural heritage, embodying profound historical, cultural, and esthetic values. However, the accelerating pace of urbanization has exposed them to unprecedented threats, including structural degradation, loss of intangible cultural practices, and the homogenization of rural landscapes. In recent years, three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and other advanced geospatial technologies have been increasingly applied in the conservation and restoration of architectural heritage. The digital documentation of traditional dwellings not only ensures the accuracy and efficiency of conservation efforts but also minimizes physical intervention, thereby safeguarding the authenticity and integrity of heritage sites. This study examines the architectural characteristics and conservation challenges of traditional Huizhou dwellings in Huangshan City, Anhui Province, by integrating oblique photogrammetry, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), and 3D modeling. Close-range photogrammetry, combined with image matching algorithms and computer vision techniques, was used to produce highly detailed 3D models of historical structures. UAV-based data acquisition was further employed to generate Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM) from point cloud datasets, which were subsequently pre-processed and denoised for restoration simulations. In addition, HBIM was utilized to conduct quantitative analyses of architectural components, providing critical support for heritage management and decision-making in conservation planning. The findings demonstrate that 3D digitization offers a sustainable and replicable model for the protection, revitalization, and adaptive reuse of traditional villages, contributing to the long-term preservation of their cultural and architectural legacy. This paper examines how entrenched dichotomies between natural/cultural and tangible/intangible heritage shape conservation policy in contexts where material, ecological, and socio-cultural dimensions are deeply interdependent. Despite calls for more integrated frameworks, limited empirical research examines how such categorical divisions operate within living rural heritage environments or how they align with community perspectives and inform conservation policies. This paper addresses this gap by analysing the persistence of rigid heritage taxonomies in officially designated traditional villages in central rural Greece exploring how heritage officials and residents perceive and value their heritage. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork across six villages—including interviews, focus groups, and consultations with heritage professionals—it demonstrates that these categorical divisions fail to reflect local understandings of heritage as a living socio-ecological system. For residents, ecological conditions, built forms, agricultural practices, and social relations are interdependent and tied to livelihoods, land stewardship, and communal identity. Findings show that the Authorized Heritage Discourse (AHD) reinforces artificial separations that are misaligned with grassroots perceptions and hinder integrated planning. This mismatch has direct implications for sustainability: governance models that fragment nature, culture, and community obscure socio-ecological processes and limit the development of meaningful sustainability strategies. By foregrounding experiential and affective dimensions of heritage, the paper advances debates on community-centred and context-responsive heritage management. It reframes rural heritage as a co-produced, evolving system of material, social, and ecological relations, positioning rural landscapes as critical arenas for addressing sustainability challenges and offering new empirical insights into an underexplored dimension of heritage research. The study further advocates for governance approaches that embed local ontologies and lived knowledge into policy and practice, fostering more inclusive, resilient, and socio-ecologically grounded heritage frameworks capable of supporting long-term sustainable development.
