Background: Increasing regulatory pressure for maritime decarbonization (e.g., IMO CII, FuelEU) drives adoption of low-carbon fuels and prompts reassessment of regional ports’ competitiveness. This study aims to evaluate the economic and environmental viability of rerouting deep-sea container services to regional ports in a decarbonizing world. Methods: A scenario-based analysis is used to evaluate total costs and CO2 emissions across the entire container shipping supply chain, incorporating deep-sea shipping, port operations, feeder services, and inland rail/road transport. The Port of Liverpool serves as the primary case study for rerouting Asia–Europe services from major ports. Results: Analysis indicates Liverpool’s competitiveness improves with shipping lines’ slow steaming, growth in hinterland shipment volume, reductions in the emission factors of alternative low-carbon fuels, and an increased modal shift to rail matching that of competitor ports (e.g., Southampton). A dual-port strategy, rerouting services to call at both Liverpool and Southampton, shows potential for both economic and environmental benefits. Conclusions: The study concludes that rerouting deep-sea services to regional ports can offer cost and emission advantages under specific operational and market conditions. Findings on factors and conditions influencing competitiveness and the dual-port strategy provide insights for shippers, ports, shipping lines, logistics agents, and policymakers navigating maritime decarbonization. Impact of Radar Data Assimilation on the Simulation of Typhoon Morakot

The high spatial resolution of radar data enables the detailed resolution of typhoon vortices and their embedded structures; the assimilation of radar data in the initialization of numerical weather prediction exerts an important influence on the forecasting of typhoon track, intensity, and structures up to at least 12 h. For the case of typhoon Morakot (2009), Taiwan radar data was assimilated to adjust the dynamic and thermodynamic structures of the vortex in the model initialization by the three-dimensional variation data assimilation system in the Advanced Region Prediction System (ARPS). The radial wind was directly assimilated to tune the original unbalanced velocity fields through a 3-dimensional variation method, and complex cloud analysis was conducted by using the reflectivity data. The influence of radar data assimilation on typhoon prediction was examined at the stages of Morakot landing on Taiwan Island and subsequently going inland. The results showed that the assimilation made some improvement in the prediction of vortex intensity, track, and structures in the initialization and subsequent forecast. For example, besides deepening the central sea level pressure and enhancing the maximum surface wind speed, the radar data assimilation corrected the typhoon center movement to the best track and adjusted the size and inner-core structure of the vortex to be close to the observations. It was also shown that the specific humidity adjustment in the cloud analysis procedure during the assimilation time window played an important role, producing more hydrometeors and tuning the unbalanced moisture and temperature fields. The neighborhood-based ETS revealed that the assimilation with the specific humidity adjustment was propitious in improving forecast skill, specifically for smaller-scale reflectivity at the stage of Morakot landing, and for larger-scale reflectivity at the stage of Morakot going inland. The calculation of the intensity-scale skill score of the hourly precipitation forecast showed the assimilation with the specific humidity adjustment performed skillful forecasting for the spatial forecast-error scales of 30–160 km. Coastal climate processes that affect landscape hydrology and beach dynamics are studied using local and remote data sets near Cape Vidal (28.12° S, 32.55° E). The sporadic intra-seasonal pulsing of coastal runoff, vegetation, and winds is analyzed to understand sediment inputs and transport by near-shore wind-waves and currents. River-borne sediments, eroded coral substrates, and reworked beach sand are mobilized by frequent storms. Surf-zone currents ~0.4 m/s instill the northward transport of ~6 105 kg/yr/m. An analysis of the mean annual cycle over the period of 1997–2024 indicates a crest of rainfall over the Umfolozi catchment during summer (Oct–Mar), whereas coastal suspended sediment, based on satellite red-band reflectivity, rises in winter (Apr–Sep) due to a deeper mixed layer and larger northward wave heights. Sediment input to the beaches near Cape Vidal exhibit a 3–6-year cycle of southeasterly waves and rainy weather associated with cool La Nina tropical sea temperatures. Beachfront sand dunes are wind-swept and release sediment at ~103 m3/yr/m, which builds tall back-dunes and helps replenish the shoreline, especially during anticyclonic dry spells. A wind event in Nov 2018 is analyzed to quantify aeolian transport, and a flood in Jan–Feb 2025 is studied for river plumes that meet with stormy seas. Management efforts to limit development and recreational access have contributed to a sustainable coastal environment despite rising tides and inland temperatures. Full article

The effective assessment and improvement of water quality require analysis not only of the main river flowing into the sea but also of its tributaries, which may contribute to significant pollution. This study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical conditions of water in nine streams flowing into the Rega River between 2018 and 2022. It also sought to determine whether the water quality in these tributaries meets the standards defined by EU regulations for inland waters that serve as habitats for fish. The parameters analyzed included water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, total suspended solids (TSSs), electrical conductivity (EC), alkalinity, total hardness (TH), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), nitrite nitrogen (NO2-N), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), and total phosphorus (TP). The results indicated that most indicators met the requirements for waters suitable for salmonid species. Elevated concentrations of NO2-N observed across all sites were still within acceptable limits for cyprinid species. Among the parameters studied, TSSs was identified as the main factor that downgraded water quality over the study period. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the dominant variables influencing water chemistry were NH4+-N, NO2-N, TP, EC, and chloride (Cl), all of which are associated with anthropogenic sources. The pilot study is devoted to the assessment of both the accumulation and spatial distribution of microplastics in the snow cover of the Zhetysu region. The height of snow cover in the study area varied from 4.0 to 80.5 cm, with a volume of melt water ranging from 1.5 to 143 L. The analysis of 53 snow samples taken at different altitudes (from 350 to 1500 m above sea level) showed the presence of microplastics in 92.6% of samples in concentrations from 1 to 12 particles per square meter. In total, 170 microplastic particles were identified. The main polymers identified by Raman spectroscopy were polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS). These are typical components of plastic waste. The spatial distribution of microplastics showed elevated concentrations near settlements and roads. Notable contaminations were also recorded in remote mountainous areas, confirming the significant role of long-range atmospheric transport. Particles smaller than 0.5 mm dominated, having high aerodynamic mobility and capable of long-range atmospheric transport. Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of microplastics in snow cover have been realized for the first time both in Kazakhstan and in the Central Asian region, which contributes to the formation of primary ideas and future approaches about microplastic pollution in continental inland regions. The obtained results demonstrate the importance of atmospheric transport in the distribution of microplastics. They indicate the need for further monitoring and microplastic pollution analyses in Central Asia, taking into account its detection even in hard-to-reach and remote areas. Full article

Extreme rainfall in urban areas can cause major economic damage, a problem expected to intensify with climate change. Despite this, high-resolution studies at the city scale remain limited. This study analyzes rainfall organization and storm dynamics over Barcelona using data from a dense rain gauge network (1994–2019). The aim is to identify dominant spatial patterns and understand how storms evolve in relation to local urban and topographic features. Principal component analysis and simple scaling analysis revealed signs of a rainfall island effect, possibly linked to the urban heat island and modulated by orographic and coastal influences. Tailored rainfall indices highlighted a division between inland areas shaped by orography and coastal zones influenced by the sea. These spatial structures evolved with rainfall duration, shifting from localized contrasts at a 10 min resolution to more homogeneous distributions at daily scales. Storm tracking showed that 90% of speeds ranged from 5 to 60 km/h and intense rainfall events typically moved east–southeast toward the sea and north–northeast. Faster storms tended to follow preferred directions reflecting mesoscale circulations and possible modulations by local terrain. These findings underscore how urban morphology, local relief, and a coastal setting may shape rainfall at the city scale, in interaction with broader Mediterranean synoptic dynamics. Full article

Optimizing Intermodal Port–Inland Hub Systems in Spain: A Capacitated Multiple-Allocation Model for Strategic and Sustainable Freight Planning

This paper presents an enhanced hub location model tailored to port–hinterland logistics planning, grounded in the Capacitated Multiple-Allocation Hub Location Problem (CMAHLP). The formulation incorporates nonlinear cost structures, hub-specific operating costs, adaptive capacity constraints, and a feasibility condition based on the Social Net Present Value (NPVsocial) to support the design of intermodal freight networks under asymmetric spatial and socio-environmental conditions. The empirical case focuses on Spain, leveraging its strategic position between Asia, North Africa, and Europe. The model includes four major ports—Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga, and Algeciras—as intermodal gateways connected to the 47 provinces of peninsular Spain through calibrated cost matrices based on real distances and mode-specific road and rail costs. A Genetic Algorithm is applied to evaluate 120 scenarios, varying the number of active hubs (4, 6, 8, 10, 12), transshipment discounts (α = 0.2 and 1.0), and internal parameters. The most efficient configuration involved 300 generations, 150 individuals, a crossover rate of 0.85, and a mutation rate of 0.40. The algorithm integrates guided mutation, elitist reinsertion, and local search on the top 15% of individuals. Results confirm the central role of Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona, frequently accompanied by high-performance inland hubs such as Málaga, Córdoba, Jaén, Palencia, León, and Zaragoza. Cities with active ports such as Cartagena, Seville, and Alicante appear in several of the most efficient network configurations. Their recurring presence underscores the strategic role of inland hubs located near seaports in supporting logistical cohesion and operational resilience across the system. The COVID-19 crisis, the Suez Canal incident, and the persistent tensions in the Red Sea have made clear the fragility of traditional freight corridors linking Asia and Europe. These shocks have brought renewed strategic attention to southern Spain—particularly the Mediterranean and Andalusian axes—as viable alternatives that offer both geographic and intermodal advantages. In this evolving context, the contribution of southern hubs gains further support through strong system-wide performance indicators such as entropy, cluster diversity, and Pareto efficiency, which allow for the assessment of spatial balance, structural robustness, and optimal trade-offs in intermodal freight planning. Southern hubs, particularly in coordination with North African partners, are poised to gain prominence in an emerging Euro–Maghreb logistics interface that demands a territorial balance and resilient port–hinterland integration. In recent years, spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite System reflectometry (GNSS-R) technology has made significant progress in the fields of Earth observation and remote sensing, with a wide range of applications, important research value, and broad development prospects. However, despite existing research focusing on the application of spaceborne GNSS-R L1-level data, the potential value of raw intermediate-frequency (IF) signals has not been fully explored for special applications that require a high accuracy and spatiotemporal resolution. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current status of the measurement of raw IF signals from spaceborne GNSS-R in multiple application fields. Firstly, the development of spaceborne GNSS-R microsatellites launch technology is introduced, including the ability of microsatellites to receive GNSS signals and receiver technique, as well as related frequency bands and technological advancements. Secondly, the key role of coherence detection in spaceborne GNSS-R is discussed. By analyzing the phase and amplitude information of the reflected signals, parameters such as scattering characteristics, roughness, and the shape of surface features are extracted. Then, the application of spaceborne GNSS-R in inland water monitoring is explored, including inland water detection and the measurement of the surface height of inland (or lake) water bodies. In addition, the widespread application of group delay sea surface height measurement and carrier-phase sea surface height measurement technology in the marine field are also discussed. Further research is conducted on the progress of spaceborne GNSS-R in the retrieval of ice height or ice sheet height, as well as tropospheric parameter monitoring and the study of atmospheric parameters. Finally, the existing research results are summarized, and suggestions for future prospects are put forward, including improving the accuracy of signal processing and reflection signal analysis, developing more advanced algorithms and technologies, and so on, to achieve more accurate and reliable Earth observation and remote sensing applications. These research results have important application potential in fields such as environmental monitoring, climate change research, and weather prediction, and are expected to provide new technological means for global geophysical parameter retrieval. Unlocking Coastal Insights: An Integrated Geophysical Study for Engineering Projects—A Case Study of Thorikos, Attica, Greece

Urban expansion in coastal areas involves infrastructure development, industrial growth, and mining activities. These coastal environments face various environmental and geological hazards that require geo-engineers to devise solutions. An integrated geophysical approach aims to address such complex challenges as sea level rise, sea water intrusion, shoreline erosion, landslides and previous anthropogenic activity in coastal settings. In this study, the proposed methodology involves the systematic application of geophysical methods (FDEM, 3D GPR, 3D ERT, seismic), starting with a broad-scale survey and then proceeding to a localized exploration, in order to identify lithostratigraphy, bedrock depth, sea water intrusion and detect anthropogenic buried features. The critical aspect is to leverage the unique strengths and limitations of each method within the coastal environment, so as to derive valuable insights for survey design (extension and orientation of measurements) and data interpretation. The coastal zone of Throrikos valley, Attica, Greece, serves as the test site of our geophysical investigation methodology. The planning of the geophysical survey included three phases: The application of frequency-domain electromagnetic (FDEM) and 3D ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods followed by a 3D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) survey and finally, using the seismic refraction tomography (SRT) and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW). The FDEM method confirmed the geomorphological study findings by revealing the paleo-coastline, superficial layers of coarse material deposits and sea water preferential flow due to the presence of anthropogenic buried features. Subsequently, the 3D GPR survey was able to offer greater detail in detecting the remains of an old marble pier inland and top layer relief of coarse material deposits. The 3D ERT measurements, deployed in a U-shaped grid, successfully identified the anthropogenic feature, mapped sea water intrusion, and revealed possible impermeable formation connected to the bedrock. ERT results cannot clearly discriminate between limestone or deposits, as sea water intrusion lowers resistivity values in both formations. Finally, SRT, in combination with MASW, clearly resolves this dilemma identifying the lithostratigraphy and bedrock top relief. The findings provide critical input for engineering decisions related to foundation planning, construction feasibility, and preservation of coastal infrastructure. The methodology supports risk-informed design and sustainable development in areas with both natural and cultural heritage sensitivity. The applied approach aims to provide a complete information package to the modern engineer when faced with specific challenges in coastal settings. Full article

Thunderstorms downbursts can be hazardous during aircraft landing and take-off. A warming climate increases low- to mid-level troposphere water vapor, typically transported from high sea-surface temperature regions. Consequently, the future occurrence and intensity of destructive wind gusts from wet microburst thunderstorms are expected to increase. Wet microbursts are downdrafts from heavily precipitating thunderstorms and are several kilometers in diameter, often producing near-surface extreme wind gusts. Brisbane airport recorded a wet microburst wind gust of 157 km/h in November 2016. Numerous locations in eastern Australia experience warm season (October to March) wet microbursts. Here, eight machine learning techniques comprising forward and backward linear regression, radial basis forward and backward support vector regression, polynomial-based forward and backward support vector regression, and forward and backward random forest selection were employed. They identified primary attributes for increased atmospheric instability by warm moist air influx from regions of high sea-surface temperatures. The climate drivers detected here are indicative of increased future eastern Australian warm season thunderstorm downbursts, occurring as wet microbursts. They suggest a greater frequency and intensity of impacts on aircraft safety and operations affecting major east coast airports, such as Sydney and Brisbane, and smaller aircraft at inland regional airports in southeastern Australia. Reliable coastal and offshore sediment transport data is a requirement for many engineering and environmental projects including port and harbour design, dredging and beach nourishment, sea shoreline protection, inland navigation, marine pollution monitoring, benthic habitat mapping, and offshore renewable energy (ORE). Novel sediment transport numerical modelling approaches allow engineers and scientists to investigate the physical interactions involved in these projects both in the near and far field. However, a lack of confidence in simulated sediment transport results is evident in many coastal and offshore studies, mainly due to limited access to validation datasets. This study addresses the need for cost-effective sediment validation datasets by investigating the applicability of four new suspended load validation techniques to a 2D model of the south-western Irish Sea. This involves integrating an estimated spatial time series of suspended solids concentration (SSCsolids) derived from acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) acoustic backscatter with several in situ water sample-based SSCsolids datasets. Ultimately, a robust spatial time series of ADCP-based SSCsolids was successfully calculated in this offshore, tidally dominated setting, where the correlation coefficient between estimated SSCsolids and directly measured SSCsolids is 0.87. Three out of the four assessed validation techniques are deemed advantageous in developing an accurate 2D suspended sediment transport model given the assumptions of the depth-integrated approach. These recommended techniques include (i) the validation of 2D modelled suspended sediment concentration (SSCsediment) using water sample-based SSCsolids, (ii) the validation of the flood–ebb characteristics of 2D modelled suspended load transport and SSCsediment using ADCP-based datasets, and (iii) the validation of the 2D modelled peak SSCsediment over a spring–neap cycle using the ADCP-based SSCsolids. Overall, the multi-disciplinary method of collecting in situ metocean and sediment dynamic data via acoustic instruments (ADCPs) is a cost-effective in situ data collection method for future ORE developments and other engineering and scientific projects. The Pinglu Canal, China’s first strategic river–sea transport canal, connects the inland waterway trunk line with the Beibu Gulf International Hub Port, while a diversion channel extension is needed for port development. This study proposed a comparative study of extension routes to Fangchenggang through qualitative analysis and quantitative modeling. Eventually, Route 4 is selected considering the engineering feasibility, ecological impact, and hydrodynamic modeling. It yields the lowest engineering cost, effectively bypasses the ecological protection red lines and cultural heritage areas, and only intersects the controllable ecological restoration zones in a limited manner. Hydrodynamic results show moderate tidal velocities, with maximum rising and falling speeds of 0.72–0.80 m/s and 0.72–0.86 m/s, respectively. The sediment deposition intensity (0.06 m/a) and total volume (58,600 m3/a) are generally lower than the other alternatives. The comparative study shares useful insights into canal route selection and would support the sustainable development of the logistics transportation system in Southwest China. Full article

Climate change will have a significant impact on saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers between now and 2150. Global sea levels are predicted to rise somewhere between 0.5 and 1.8 m. To mitigate sea level rise, coastal aquifers will require intensive management to avoid inland migration of seawater that could impact water supplies. In addition to reducing pumping of freshwater, the construction and operation of salinity barriers will be required in many locations. Eleven types of salinity barriers were investigated, including physical barriers (curtain wall and grout curtains), infiltration canals filled with freshwater paralleling the coastline, injection of freshwater (treated surface water or wastewater), pumping or abstraction barriers, mixed injection and abstraction barriers, combined abstraction, desalination, and recharge (ADR), ADR hybrid barriers using various water sources including desalinated water and treated wastewater, compressed air barriers, aquifer storage and recovery dual use systems, biofilm barriers, and clay swelling or dispersion barriers. Feasibility of the use of each salinity barrier type was evaluated within the context of the most recent projections of sea level changes. Key factors used in the evaluation included local hydrogeology, land surface slope, water use, the rate of sea level rise, technical feasibility (operational track record), and economics. The Interannual Cyclicity of Precipitation in Xinjiang During the Past 70 Years and Its Contributing Factors

Precipitation cyclicity plays a crucial role in regional water supply and climate predictions. In this study, we used observational data from 34 representative meteorological stations in the Xinjiang region, a major part of inland arid China, to characterize the interannual cyclicity of regional precipitation from 1951 to 2021 and analyze its contributing factors. The results indicated that the mean annual precipitation in Xinjiang (MAP_XJ) was dominated by a remarkably increasing trend over the past 70 years, which was superimposed by two bands of interannual cycles of approximately 3 years with explanatory variance of 56.57% (Band I) and 6–7 years with explanatory variance of 23.38% (Band II). This is generally consistent with previous studies on the cyclicity of precipitation in Xinjiang for both seasonal and annual precipitation. We analyzed the North Tropical Atlantic sea-surface temperature (NTASST), El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Arctic Oscillation (AO), and Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) as potential forcing factors that show similar interannual cycles and may contribute to the identified precipitation variability. Two approaches, multivariate linear regression and the Random Forest model, were employed to ascertain the relative significance of each factor influencing Bands I and II, respectively. The multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that the AO index contributed the most to Band I, with a significance score of −0.656, whereas the ENSO index with a one-year lead (ENSO−1yr) played a dominant role in Band II (significance score = 0.457). The Random Forest model also suggested that the AO index exhibited the highest significance score (0.859) for Band I, whereas the AO index with a one-year lead (AO−1yr) had the highest significance score (0.876) for Band II. Overall, our findings highlight the necessity of employing different methods that consider both the linear and non-linear response of climate variability to driving factors crucial for future climate prediction. This study combines field and laboratory analyses from seven shallow wells (ZK1 to ZK7) positioned perpendicular to the coastline to investigate groundwater discharge and dynamics in the coastal unconfined aquifer of the intertidal zone at Yazhou Bay, Sanya, Hainan Province. The research highlights spatial variations in N2O concentration, temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), pH, and the distribution of CFCs and CCl4 in shallow groundwater, utilizing samples from wells ZK1 to ZK7 and seawater collected near ZK1. Key findings indicate that groundwater temperature decreases toward the ocean, while EC exhibits a stepwise increase from land to sea, with a sharp transition near ZK3 marking the freshwater–saltwater mixing zone. pH values are lowest in ZK3 and ZK4, gradually rising both inland and seaward. N2O concentrations in the shallow wells (ZK1–ZK7) are divided into two distinct groups: higher concentrations (9.69–57.77 nmol/kg) in ZK5–ZK7 and lower concentrations (6.63–23.03 nmol/kg) in ZK1–ZK4. Wells ZK3 and ZK4 show minimal variation in CFC-11 and CFC-113 concentrations, suggesting they represent a transition zone that likely delineates groundwater flow paths. In contrast, significant concentration differences in wells ZK5–ZK7 (north) and ZK1–ZK2 (south) reflect the influence of aquifer structure variability, recharge sources, and local hydrogeochemical conditions. CFC-12 concentrations exhibit a clear freshwater–saltwater mixing gradient between ZK3 and ZK1, with higher concentrations in freshwater-dominated areas (ZK3–ZK7) and lower concentrations near seawater (ZK1). CCl4 concentrations at ZK7 and ZK3 differ markedly from other wells, indicating unique hydrogeochemical conditions or localized anthropogenic influences. A model for the formation of upper saline plumes (USP) under tidal forcing at the low tidal line was established previously. Here, we establish a new model that accounts for the absence of USP driven by hydrological processes influenced by artificial sandy beach topography, and a fresh groundwater wedge is identified, which can serve as a significant fast-flow pathway for terrestrial water and nutrients to the ocean.
