Binary logic transmission (BLT), a stepped transmission system, has been utilized in military vehicles and heavy-duty commercial vehicles due to its high transmission efficiency, strong load-bearing capacity, and compact structure. Its adaptability to agricultural tractor operations is notable. This study modularizes BLT into a binary logic transmission unit (BLT-U) for application in agricultural tractor Hydro-Mechanical Continuously Variable Transmission (HMCVT), optimizing its wet clutch to enhance HMCVT shifting performance. This provides a basis for BLT-U’s application in other transmission systems and subsequent optimization. A wet clutch test bench was employed to validate the modeling approach. The optimal BLT-U configuration was selected using both light/heavy load conditions and subjective–objective evaluation criteria. The WOA improved the spread value in the GRNN algorithm, establishing a GRNN to predict the optimal range for wet clutch design values in BLT-U; the model validation showed an average correlation coefficient of 0.92 for speed curves and an average relative error of 5.58% for dynamic loads. Under light-load conditions, the optimal configuration improved average and maximum scores by 13.38% and 11.53%, respectively, while under heavy-load conditions, the corresponding improvements were 9.38% and 5.86%. Under light-load conditions, the optimized GRNN reduced total relative error by 39.6%, while under heavy-load conditions, it achieved a 61% reduction. This study confirms the rationality of the modeling method, identifies Configuration 1 as optimal, and determines the optimal range for clutch design values under light-load and heavy-load conditions, respectively. In response to the absence of an effective variable speed control strategy for tractors equipped with hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission (HMCVT) during rotary-tillage operations, this study investigates the power transfer and fuel economy characteristics of the rotary-tilling tractor during operation. A dynamic analysis of the rotary-tilling tractor is conducted, and a dynamic model for the rotary-tilling tractor is developed. This model comprehensively incorporates factors such as the transmission efficiency of the HMCVT, the horizontal cutting force of the rotary tillage, and the torque coupling relationships between the various transmission subsystems and utilizes a backward modeling approach with dual inputs: walking load and rotary-tillage load. Based on the measured data of the effective fuel consumption rate from 64 engine groups within the study, a BP neural network model of the engine’s fuel characteristics is developed. Furthermore, it is proposed that fuel consumption per kilometer of rotary-tillage operation be used to characterize the fuel economy of the rotary-tilling tractor. The results demonstrate that the increase in forward speed concurrently enhances both the productivity and fuel economy of the rotary-tilling tractor. This finding provides a theoretical foundation for developing a variable speed control strategy for the rotary-tilling tractor. Full article

Transmission efficiency is a key characteristic of Hydro-mechanical Continuously Variable Transmission (HMCVT), which is related to the performance of heavy-duty tractors. Predicting the HMCVT transmission efficiency is beneficial for the real-time adjustment of transmission ratio during heavy-duty tractor operations, so as to obtain better performance. Aiming at the problems of accurate method, low accuracy, and high noise in the prediction of HMCVT transmission efficiency, this paper proposes a method based on Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Back Propagation (BP) neural networks to improve the quality of transmission efficiency prediction. Firstly, a simple theoretical model was established to obtain the influencing factors of transmission efficiency. Then, based on these factors, the transmission efficiency was tested on the bench under multiple conditions and the influence degree of each factor on transmission efficiency was divided using Partial Least Squares (PLS) method. Finally, the VMD method was used to denoise the test data, and a BP model, which was improved using the PSO method, was established to predict the processed data. The results showed that transmission efficiency of HMCVT is most affected by output speed, followed by power, and least by input speed. The VMD method can accurately extract effective signals and noise signals from the original data, and reconstruct signals, reducing the noise proportion. Using three conditions, the prediction regression accuracy of the PSO–BP model is 7.02%, 7.88%, and 9.26% higher than that of the BP model, respectively. In the three prediction experiments, the maximum differences in the MAE, the MAPE, and the RMSE of the PSO–BP model are 0.002, 0.463%, and 0.004, respectively, which are 0.006, 0.796%, and 0.003 lower than those of the BP model. Aiming at the stability of the output speed and the poor adaptability of the transmission system during the operation of a cotton picker, a control strategy of hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission (HMCVT) for cotton pickers based on gray prediction and fuzzy PID is proposed. Firstly, the hardware and software of the existing hydraulic mechanical coupling transmission test-bed of cotton pickers are designed, and the HMCVT human-computer interaction measurement and control system is built by using LABVIEW 2020 software. Then, combined with the transmission theory, the control strategy and gray prediction model are designed. Finally, the continuity test, transmission efficiency test, and adaptive control verification test are carried out. The results show that as the input speed increases, the peak time of the pump motor output speed is prolonged, while the overall speed regulation process is smoother, and the output speed process of the HMCVT system is continuous. As the displacement ratio of the variable pump increases, the transmission efficiency of the hydraulic system increases accordingly, but the highest efficiency is around 0.8. At a working speed of 10 km/h, the transmission efficiency of the HMCVT system of the cotton picker is more than 80%, and the high efficiency of the mechanical system in the whole system makes up for the low efficiency of the hydraulic system, and the transmission efficiency of the cotton picker is the highest at 15–25 km/h. The speed under the adaptive control strategy is better, with good robustness to sudden torque changes and speed fluctuations in the range of ±0.0125% under external load conditions. This study provides a reference for future adaptive control of transmission output speed for heavy-duty vehicles and construction machinery. Full article

The HMCVT (Hydro-mechanical Continuously Variable Transmission) can realize continuously variable speed in a large range and transmit high power through power diving, and thus, it is widely applied in agricultural machineries, such as tractors. The engineering technology requirements of precision agriculture and intelligent agriculture have put forward higher requests for the research and development of HMCVT. In order to further improve the performance of HMCVT in the design stage and match the service characteristics of agricultural tractors in the whole life cycle, this paper proposes a new HMCVT optimization design method which mainly consists of 5 steps. The proposed method takes the regular and continuous transmission ratio variation, matching the working requirements in the whole life cycle of agricultural tractors and transmission efficiency maximization as comprehensive objectives. The improved genetic algorithm (I-GA) is applied. The HMCVT efficiency characteristic model combines the characteristic efficiency model of the hydraulic system, which has been verified, and the theoretical calculation model based on the engaging power method. By analyzing the statistical data of the tractor speed operating frequency in the whole life cycle, the proposed method is used to determine the weight of each hydro-mechanical power dividing stage (i.e., HM stage) service time. In the design process, the HMCVT efficiency is integrated with the displacement ratio so as to realize the evaluation of the maximum efficiency in the whole life cycle of the tractor. Research results show that the proposed method can improve HMCVT performance significantly, and the mean error between speed regulating characteristics and expected value in design is 1.04% or so. The HMCVT service efficiency in the whole life cycle of the tractor has been improved by 19.93%. The research in the paper offers a valuable reference for getting the law of HMCVT characteristics and performance improvement design of tractors. Full article

A wet clutch is the key shift part of the hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission (HMCVT), and the working characteristics have an important influence on the shift quality of HMCVT. To reduce impact during the shift and improve engagement quality, this paper analyzed the influence of system oil pressure and the clutch’s working flow on the engagement characteristics of the wet clutch in terms of shift quality. Firstly, the engagement characteristics (including oil pressure variation characteristics and dynamic torque characteristics) of the wet clutch were tested with different working flows and system oil pressures based on the HMCVT shift clutch bench. Then, the shift impact and sliding friction work were used to evaluate the shift quality. An evaluation function was established based on the maximum shift impact and the maximum sliding friction work to obtain the optimal shift quality. Finally, a shift model was built using Simulation X to simulate the shift quality of nine groups of engagement characteristics. The results showed that increasing the working flow can reduce the wet clutch engagement time by 1.7 s at most, and increasing the system oil pressure can only reduce this by 0.1 s. The higher working flow and system oil pressure can increase the shift impact and reduce the sliding friction work. The combination of the working flow and system oil pressure with the minimum evaluation function value is (10 L/min, 2.0 MPa), and the shift quality is the best. The research can provide a reference for the design, shift control, and shift quality improvement of an HMCVT wet clutch. Full article

In order to solve the problem of high fuel consumption and poor emission performance in high horsepower tractors, a parallel hybrid tractor system was designed using a dual power source of an engine and motor matched with a hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission (HMCVT). An equivalent fuel consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) was used for power distribution of this hybrid system. To address the problem of poor adaptability of the equivalence factor to different working cycles in the conventional ECMS, a fuzzy adaptive equivalent fuel consumption minimization strategy (FA-ECMS) was proposed. A fuzzy PI controller based on battery SOC (State of Charge) feedback was designed to adjust the equivalence factor in real time, so as to achieve adaptive control of the equivalence factor. The physical model of the system was built by SimulationX, and the model of the control strategy was built using Matlab/Simulink. Two typical cycles of tractor plowing and road transportation were simulated. Under ECMS, the fuel consumption of the hybrid agricultural tractor was 14.3 L and 1.19 L in one plowing cycle and one transport cycle, respectively, with final battery SOC values of 60.75% and 60.32%, respectively. Under FA-ECMS, the hybrid farm tractor consumed 13.34 L and 1.13 L in one plowing cycle and one transport cycle, respectively, with final battery SOC values of 60.27% and 60.17%, respectively. The results showed that, with the introduction of a fuzzy PI controller to dynamically adjust the equivalence factor, the overall fuel consumption was reduced by 6.71% and 5.04%, respectively, and the battery power maintenance performance was improved. The designed control strategy could achieve a more reasonable power distribution between the engine and motor while maintaining the balance of the battery SOC. Full article

The hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission (HMCVT) is the critical component in the transmission system of the high-horsepower tractor. However, different structural layouts have a significant influence on transmission efficiency, especially for the HMCVT with multiple planetary rows. Therefore, the double planetary HMCVT, which, based on efficiency characteristics, was designed in this study, as well as the efficiency distribution area under different loads, were analysed. First, the method of the single planetary row in structure layout is constructed and redefined, revealing the transformation law of transmission in different layouts. Moreover, the different layout efficiencies and output transmission ratios were derived as the theoretical basis for selection. Then, the obtained transmission and efficiency characteristics were selected as the best combination to design the double planetary HMCVT. The theoretical efficiency and hydraulic power shunt characteristics were analysed with the circulating power, and the influence of circulating power on operational efficiency was determined. Finally, the hardware-in-the-loop system of HMCVT was designed. Herein, a new type of variable load efficiency characteristic analysis method is proposed, which treats the engine and transmission as an efficient whole. The variational performance of the efficiency field in hydro-mechanical stages are discussed under full load and variable load. This research provides theoretical support for efficiency improvements in design and analysis of the multi-planetary HMCVT tractor. Full article

The shift quality is one of the most important criteria for evaluating the operation and transportation of a hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission (HMCVT) tractor. In this study, a comprehensive shifting control strategy of a hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission in a high horsepower tractor is investigated for enhancing shift quality. The detailed mathematical model of the transmission assembly components, such as the pump-motor system, the clutch system and the equivalent gear shaft system of the hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission, are established to analyze the exact shifting process. For different transmission systems, two different control methods are proposed to achieve precise control of the transmission. The double-loop control (PID-Model Predictive Control) is used for the pump-motor hydraulic system, which not only ensures the anti-interference of the control signal when the displacement is a fixed value but also improves the response characteristics and stability of the control output when the displacement ratio is variable. The PID control is used for oil pressure control of the clutch system, and experimental results reveal that a simple method can obtain better control performance. Finally, a comprehensive control strategy in the process of shifting is proposed, and the optimal control strategy is obtained by comprehensively adjusting the pump-motor hydraulic system and the clutch system at the shifting point. The results show that the shift acceleration under the optimal control strategy is 64.4% lower than that without control. The proposed control strategy can effectively reduce shift shock and Improve shift smoothness. Full article

The hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission (HMCVT) has complicated transmission characteristics. To analyze the influences of various factors on HMCVT’s efficiency characteristics and build a more precise HMCVT efficiency characteristic model, the paper conducted a full factorial simulation test for and a modeling study on a novel five-stage HMCVT’s efficiency characteristics. The full factorial test considered four factors with a total of 160 groups of test samples and used a range analysis method. Moreover, we proposed a piecewise modeling method for HMCVT efficiency characteristics based on the improved genetic algorithm (I-GA) and compared the precision of seven models. Research results showed that the working stage with the power output from the planet carrier had relatively higher efficiency. The variable pump’s displacement ratio had the greatest influence, and the HMCVT’s efficiency characteristics presented two variation laws with the boundary that the displacement ratio is 0. The load power and the engine speed showed a positive correlation and a negative correlation with the efficiency characteristics, respectively, and the influences decreased as the factor values increased. The modeling method proposed had high modeling precision and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of seven models was in the range of 1.6884~3.1375%. The estimation precision greatly could be improved (the MAPE reduced by 7.7024% and the R2 increased by 9.2943%) by introducing the first-order term of engine speed on the basis of a two-factor model (in which the factors were the displacement ratio and the load power). The paper aimed to offer direct reference information on parameters of the mechanical design and control strategy development of HMCVT from an energy-saving perspective in the design stage. To improve the speed regulating characteristics of continuously variable transmission for agricultural machinery, in order to meet the engineering and technical requirements of precision agriculture and intelligent agriculture, the paper researches and proposes a method combining the analysis of speed regulating characteristics, regression-based correction, and the improved particle swarm optimization (I-PSO) algorithm. First, the paper analyzes the degree of deviation between the linearization degree and the theoretical value of the speed regulating characteristics of the variable-pump constant-motor system of agricultural machinery according to the measurement results of the bench test. Next, the paper corrects the speed regulating characteristics and compares the regression results based on four models. Finally, the paper proposes a design method for the expected speed regulating characteristics of agricultural machinery and it completes the optimization of speed regulating characteristics and the matching of transmission parameters with the I-PSO algorithm. Results indicate that the speed regulating characteristics of the variable-pump constant-motor system show high linearization (with a coefficient of determination of 0.9775). The theoretical and measured values of the speed regulating characteristics have a certain deviation (with a coefficient of determination of 0.8934). Therefore, correcting the speed regulating characteristics of the variable-pimp constant-motor system is highly necessary. In addition, the second reciprocal function model proposed has the highest correction precision (with a coefficient of determination of 0.9978). The I-PSO algorithm is applicable to the design and application of hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission (HMCVT) for agricultural machinery. The new method proposed can improve the HMCVT’s speed regulating characteristics efficiently and quickly. It also ensures that the speed regulating characteristics are highly consistent with the expected design characteristics (with a mean error of 1.73%). Thus, the research offers a theoretical direction and design basis for the research and development of continuously variable transmission units in agricultural machinery. Full article

Energy-saving and emission reduction has become the theme of the world. The wheel loader has a harsh working environment, complicated working conditions, and drastic changes in load, and the performance of the engine cannot be fully utilized. Therefore, the variable speed transmission of vehicles plays a vital role in improving the efficiency and performance of the vehicle. This paper establishes the general characteristic equations for the input coupling type of hydro-mechanical continuously variable transmission (HMCVT) based on the wheel loader and determines reasonable structural forms for connection of working conditions. It establishes the general efficiency equation for the reasonable structural form for efficiency analysis and presents a method of co-validation of the simulation and test for making the results of efficiency more accurate. Through this method, the transmission performance is more accurately analyzed, which provides an important guiding role and validation for the early design of HMCVT.
