In the present study, we evaluated the potential use of a humic substance (HS)-based biostimulant in mitigating drought stress in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) by comparing both root and foliar modes of application. To achieve this, lettuce plants were grown in a growth chamber on a solid substrate composed of vermiculite and perlite (3:1). Plants were exposed to drought conditions (50% of Field Capacity, FC) and 50% FC + HS applied as radicular (‘R’) and foliar (‘F’) at concentrations: R-HS 0.40 and 0.60 mL/L, respectively, and 7.50 and 10.00 mL/L, respectively, along with a control (100% FC). HSs were applied three times at 10-day intervals. Plant growth, nutrient concentration, lipid peroxidation, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants were estimated. Various photosynthetic and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were also analyzed. The results showed that HS applications alleviated drought stress, increased plant growth, and reduced lipid peroxidation and ROS accumulation. HSs also improved the net photosynthetic rate, carboxylation efficiency, electron transport flux, and water use efficiency. Although foliar HSs showed a greater tendency to enhance shoot growth and photosynthetic capacity, the differences between the application methods were not significant. Hence, in this preliminary work, the HS-based product evaluated in this study demonstrated potential for alleviating drought stress in lettuce plants at the applied doses, regardless of the mode of application. This study highlights HS-based biostimulants as an effective and sustainable tool to improve crop resilience and support sustainable agriculture under climate change. However, further studies under controlled growth chamber conditions are needed to confirm these results before field trials. Full article

This research considers a preliminary comparative technical evaluation of two micro-gas turbine (MGT) systems in combined heat and power (CHP) mode (100 kWe), aimed at supplying heat to a residential community of 15 average-sized buildings located in Central Europe over a year. Two systems were modelled in Ebsilon 15 software: a natural gas case (benchmark) and an ammonia-fueled case, both based on the same on-design parameters. Off-design simulations evaluated performance over variable ambient temperatures and loads. Idealized, unrecuperated cycles were adopted to isolate the thermodynamic impact of the fuel switch under complete combustion assumption. Under these assumptions, the study shows that the ammonia system produces more electrical energy and less excess heat, yielding marginally higher electrical efficiency and EUF (26.05% and 77.63%) than the natural gas system (24.59% and 77.55%), highlighting ammonia’s utilization potential in such a context. Future research should target validating ammonia combustion and emission profiles across the turbine load range, and updating the thermodynamic model with a recuperator and SCR accounting for realistic pressure losses. This study investigates the factors influencing school trip mode choice among senior high school students in the Chiang Rai urban area, Chiang Rai, Thailand, under normal and adverse weather conditions. Utilizing data from 472 students across six extra-large urban schools, a Multinomial Logit (MNL) regression model was applied to examine the effects of socio-demographic attributes, household vehicle ownership, travel distance, and spatial variables on mode selection. The results revealed notable modal shifts during adverse weather, with motorcycle usage decreasing and private vehicle reliance increasing, while school bus usage remained stable, highlighting its role as a resilient transport option. Car ownership emerged as a strong enabler of modal flexibility, whereas students with limited access to private transport demonstrated reduced adaptability. Additionally, increased waiting and travel times during adverse conditions underscored infrastructure and service vulnerabilities, particularly for mid-distance travelers. The findings suggest an urgent need for transport policies that promote inclusive and climate-resilient mobility systems, particularly in the context of Chiang Rai, including expanded school bus services, improved first-mile connectivity, and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure. This study contributes to the literature by addressing environmental variability in school travel behavior and offers actionable insights for sustainable transport planning in secondary cities and border regions. Background: Pain is a complex phenomenon characterized by unpleasant experiences with profound heterogeneity influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. According to the National Health Interview Survey, 50.2 million U.S. adults (20.5%) experience pain on most days, with the annual cost of prescription medication for pain reaching approximately USD 17.8 billion. Theranostic pain nanomedicine therefore emerges as an attractive analgesic strategy with the potential for increased efficacy, reduced side-effects, and treatment personalization. Theranostic nanomedicine combines drug delivery and diagnostic features, allowing for real-time monitoring of analgesic efficacy in vivo using molecular imaging. However, clinical translation of these nanomedicines are challenging due to complex manufacturing methodologies, lack of standardized quality control, and potentially high costs. Quality by Design (QbD) can navigate these challenges and lead to the development of an optimal pain nanomedicine. Our lab previously reported a macrophage-targeted perfluorocarbon nanoemulsion (PFC NE) that demonstrated analgesic efficacy across multiple rodent pain models in both sexes. Here, we report PFC-free, biphasic nanoemulsions formulated with a biocompatible and non-immunogenic plant-based coconut oil loaded with a COX-2 inhibitor and a clinical-grade, indocyanine green (ICG) near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) dye for parenteral theranostic analgesic nanomedicine. Methods: Critical process parameters and material attributes were identified through the FMECA (Failure, Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis) method and optimized using a 3 × 2 full-factorial design of experiments. We investigated the impact of the oil-to-surfactant ratio (w/w) with three different surfactant systems on the colloidal properties of NE. Small-scale (100 mL) batches were manufactured using sonication and microfluidization, and the final formulation was scaled up to 500 mL with microfluidization. The colloidal stability of NE was assessed using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and drug quantification was conducted through reverse-phase HPLC. An in vitro drug release study was conducted using the dialysis bag method, accompanied by HPLC quantification. The formulation was further evaluated for cell viability, cellular uptake, and COX-2 inhibition in the RAW 264.7 macrophage cell line. Results: Nanoemulsion droplet size increased with a higher oil-to-surfactant ratio (w/w) but was no significant impact by the type of surfactant system used. Thermal cycling and serum stability studies confirmed NE colloidal stability upon exposure to high and low temperatures and biological fluids. We also demonstrated the necessity of a solubilizer for long-term fluorescence stability of ICG. The nanoemulsion showed no cellular toxicity and effectively inhibited PGE2 in activated macrophages. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first instance of a celecoxib-loaded theranostic platform developed using a plant-derived hydrocarbon oil, applying the QbD approach that demonstrated COX-2 inhibition. Fetal tachyarrhythmias, particularly supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and atrial flutter (AFL), pose significant clinical challenges, especially when complicated by hydrops fetalis. This article provides a comprehensive review of the tachyarrhythmia types, the diagnostic modalities applied, and the therapeutic strategies followed in fetal tachyarrhythmias. Diagnostic techniques such as M-mode echocardiography and fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG) are highlighted for their capacity to provide real-time, high-quality assessments of fetal cardiac rhythms. The review, also, focuses on pharmacologic management via transplacental therapy, discussing the safety and efficacy of the key agents including digoxin, flecainide, and sotalol, under different clinical scenarios, such as hydropic fetus and renal impairment. In addition to transplacental administration, alternative approaches such as direct fetal intramuscular or intravascular injections are examined. These direct methods, while potentially more effective in refractory cases, carry risks that necessitate specialized expertise and careful consideration of maternal and fetal safety. The limitations of current evidence, largely based on small case studies and retrospective analyses, underscore the need for larger, prospective multicenter observational studies and randomized control trials to establish standardized protocols for fetal tachyarrhythmia management. Overall, this review advocates for a personalized, multidisciplinary approach, emphasizing early fetal tachyarrhythmias diagnosis, tailored treatment regimens that balances efficacy with safety, and rigorous monitoring to optimize outcomes for both the fetus and the mother. Global supply chains often face uncertainties in production lead times, fluctuating exchange rates, and varying tariff regulations, all of which can significantly impact total profit. To address these challenges, this study formulates a multi-country supply chain problem as a Semi-Markov Decision Process (SMDP), integrating both currency variability and tariff levels. Using a Q-learning-based method (SMART), we explore three scenarios: (1) wide currency gaps under a uniform tariff, (2) narrowed currency gaps encouraging more local sourcing, and (3) distinct tariff structures that highlight how varying duties can reshape global fulfillment decisions. Beyond these baselines we analyze uncertainty-extended variants and targeted sensitivities (quantity discounts, tariff escalation, and the joint influence of inventory holding costs and tariff costs). Simulation results, accompanied by policy heatmaps and performance metrics, illustrate how small or large shifts in exchange rates and tariffs can alter sourcing strategies, transportation modes, and inventory management. A Deep Q-Network (DQN) is also applied to validate the Q-learning policy, demonstrating alignment with a more advanced neural model for moderate-scale problems. These findings underscore the adaptability of reinforcement learning in guiding practitioners and policymakers, especially under rapidly changing trade environments where exchange rate volatility and incremental tariff changes demand robust, data-driven decision-making. What Determines Carbon Emissions of Multimodal Travel? Insights from Interpretable Machine Learning on Mobility Trajectory Data

Understanding the carbon emissions of multimodal travel—comprising walking, metro, bus, cycling, and ride-hailing—is essential for promoting sustainable urban mobility. However, most existing studies focus on single-mode travel, while underlying spatiotemporal and behavioral determinants remain insufficiently explored due to the lack of fine-grained data and interpretable analytical frameworks. This study proposes a novel integration of high-frequency, real-world mobility trajectory data with interpretable machine learning to systematically identify the key drivers of carbon emissions at the individual trip level. Firstly, multimodal travel chains are reconstructed using continuous GPS trajectory data collected in Beijing. Secondly, a model based on Calculate Emissions from Road Transport (COPERT) is developed to quantify trip-level CO2 emissions. Thirdly, four interpretable machine learning models based on gradient boosting—XGBoost, GBDT, LightGBM, and CatBoost—are trained using transportation and built environment features to model the relationship between CO2 emissions and a set of explanatory variables; finally, Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and partial dependence plots (PDPs) are used to interpret the model outputs, revealing key determinants and their non-linear interaction effects. The results show that transportation-related features account for 75.1% of the explained variance in emissions, with bus usage being the most influential single factor (contributing 22.6%). Built environment features explain the remaining 24.9%. The PDP analysis reveals that substantial emission reductions occur only when the shares of bus, metro, and cycling surpass threshold levels of approximately 40%, 40%, and 30%, respectively. Additionally, travel carbon emissions are minimized when trip origins and destinations are located within a 10 to 11 km radius of the central business district (CBD). This study advances the field by establishing a scalable, interpretable, and behaviorally grounded framework to assess carbon emissions from multimodal travel, providing actionable insights for low-carbon transport planning and policy design. To reduce the carbon footprint of the concrete industry and promote a circular economy, this study explores the reuse of waste materials such as glass powder (GP) and nitrile rubber (NR) fibres in concrete. However, the inclusion of these waste materials results in lower compressive strength compared to conventional concrete, limiting their application to non-structural elements. To overcome this limitation, this study adopts the concept of confined concrete by developing concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) stub columns. In total, twelve concrete mix variations were developed, with and without steel tube confinement. GP was utilised at replacement levels of 10–30% by weight of cement, while NR fibres were introduced at 0.5% and 1% by volume of concrete. The findings demonstrate that the incorporation of GP and NR fibres leads to a reduction in compressive strength, with a compounded effect observed when both materials are combined. Steel confinement within CFST columns effectively mitigated the strength reductions, restoring up to 17% of the lost capacity and significantly improving ductility and energy absorption capacity. All CFST columns exhibited consistent local outward buckling failure mode, irrespective of the concrete mix variations. A comparison with predictions from existing design codes and empirical models revealed discrepancies, underscoring the need for refined design approaches for CFST columns incorporating sustainable concrete infill. This study contributes valuable insights into the development of eco-friendly, high-performance structural systems, highlighting the potential of CFST technology in facilitating the adoption of waste materials in the construction sector. A Safety-Based Approach for the Design of an Innovative Microvehicle

The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

Amidst the escalating demand for high-precision structural health monitoring in large-scale engineering applications, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer fiber Bragg grating (CFRP-FBG) sensors have emerged as a pivotal technology for fatigue life evaluation, owing to their exceptional sensitivity and intrinsic immunity to electromagnetic interference. A time-series predictive architecture based on long short-term memory (LSTM) networks is developed in this work to facilitate intelligent fatigue life assessment of structures subjected to complex cyclic loading by capturing and modeling critical spectral characteristics of CFRP-FBG sensors, specifically the side-mode suppression ratio and main-lobe peak-to-valley ratio. To enhance model robustness and generalization, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was employed to isolate the most salient spectral features, followed by data preprocessing via normalization and model optimization through the integration of the Adam optimizer and Dropout regularization strategy. Relative to conventional Backpropagation (BP) neural networks, the LSTM model demonstrated a substantial improvement in predicting the side-mode suppression ratio, achieving a 61.62% reduction in mean squared error (MSE) and a 34.99% decrease in root mean squared error (RMSE), thereby markedly enhancing robustness to outliers and ensuring greater overall prediction stability. In predicting the peak-to-valley ratio, the model attained a notable 24.9% decrease in mean absolute error (MAE) and a 21.2% reduction in root mean squared error (RMSE), thereby substantially curtailing localized inaccuracies. The forecasted confidence intervals were correspondingly narrower and exhibited diminished fluctuation, highlighting the LSTM architecture’s enhanced proficiency in capturing nonlinear dynamics and modeling temporal dependencies. The proposed method manifests considerable practical engineering relevance and delivers resilient intelligent assistance for the seamless implementation of CFRP-FBG sensor technology in structural health monitoring and fatigue life prognostics. The fast-maturing photonic integration technology is calling for a versatile platform that supports both active and passive functions as well as high scalability through component miniaturization. Indium phosphide (InP) has long been recognized for its ability to deliver a comprehensive suite of photonic components. InP membrane technology has emerged as a next-generation solution that could unite the functional completeness with high scalability. This paper describes recent advancements in the InP-membrane-on-Si (IMOS) platform, which supports high-performance passives, polarization and mode handling, native light sources, amplifiers, modulators and detectors, and novel material integration. Chronic atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia (IM) are gastric precancerous conditions (GPCs) associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer. Early detection and accurate characterization of GPC are therefore crucial for risk stratification and the implementation of preventive strategies. In the absence of clear mucosal changes observed through white-light imaging (WLI) or virtual chromoendoscopy, endocytoscopy can help unveil the presence of GPC by enabling in vivo assessment of nuclear and cellular structures at ultra-high magnification. Endocytoscopy is typically performed using WLI following dye-based staining of the mucosa. In this case, we demonstrate that combining endocytoscopy with the texture and color enhancement imaging (TXI) mode substantially improves the assessment of the gastric mucosa. In a 61-year-old man undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy, WLI showed multifocal erythema in the stomach, without clearly visible lesions on either WLI or narrow-band imaging. Conventional endocytoscopy revealed multiple small spots of IM with characteristic changes in glandular structures, which were even more evident when using the TXI mode. Histological analysis of targeted biopsies confirmed small foci of IM in both the antrum and corpus. The patient was enrolled in a surveillance program because of his clinical background. The combination of endocytoscopy with the TXI mode significantly enhances the delineation of mucosal and cellular architecture, supporting a more accurate optical diagnosis. Full article

Boda boda motorbike taxis are a primary mode of transport in Nairobi, Kenya, and a major source of urban air pollution. This study investigates the environmental and electrical grid impacts of electrifying Nairobi’s boda boda fleet. Using real-world tracking data from 118 motorbikes, we simulated the effects of a full-scale transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric motorbikes. We analysed various scenarios, including different battery charging strategies (swapping and home charging), motor efficiencies, battery capacities, charging rates, and the potential for solar power offsetting. The results indicate that electrification could reduce daily CO2 emissions by approximately 85% and eliminate tailpipe particulate matter emissions. However, transitioning the entire country’s fleet would increase the national daily energy demand by up to 6.85 GWh and could introduce peak grid loads as high as 2.40 GW, depending on the charging approach and vehicle efficiency. Battery swapping was found to distribute the grid load more evenly and better complement solar power integration compared to home charging, which concentrates demand in the evening. This research provides a scalable, data-driven framework for policymakers to assess the impacts of transport electrification in similar urban contexts, highlighting the critical trade-offs between environmental benefits and grid infrastructure requirements. The Impact of Advanced Maternal Age on Pregnancy Complications and Neonatal Outcomes

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate and compare maternal and fetal outcomes between pregnancies in women aged 40 and over and those in women under 40 years of age at a tertiary care hospital. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at Necmettin Erbakan University Medical Faculty Hospital, analyzing data from 345 women aged 40 and over and 366 women under 40 who delivered between January 2015 and December 2024. Maternal and perinatal outcomes—including mode of delivery, gestational age, birth weight, and complications such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and postpartum hemorrhage—were compared between the two groups. Results: Women aged 40 and over had significantly higher rates of cesarean section (73% vs. 36.1%, p < 0.0001), preterm delivery (27.8% vs. 18%, p = 0.002), and gestational diabetes (14.8% vs. 7.7%, p = 0.002). Additionally, these women had a higher incidence of preeclampsia (13% vs. 5.7%, p = 0.001) and postpartum hemorrhage (18% vs. 10.5%, p = 0.003). Despite these increased risks, the 5 min APGAR score was significantly higher in the ≥40 age group (median 8 vs. 7, p < 0.0001). The incidence of chromosomal abnormalities was significantly higher in patients≥ 40 years, with 5 cases (1.4%) reported, compared to no cases (0%) in the <40 age group (p = 0.025). Conclusions: This study shows that pregnancies in women aged 40 and above carry higher maternal and fetal risks compared to younger women. Complications such as preterm labor, cesarean delivery, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia occur more frequently in this group. However, with careful prenatal care, positive neonatal outcomes are often achievable, highlighting the need for age-specific management and early risk detection. Full article

Transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR) is a disease caused by the deposition of transthyretin-derived fibrils in the body. Despite extensive research conducted over the years, there are currently only four drugs available in clinical use to treat this condition, two of which are repurposed drugs used off-label. However, these treatments present several limitations; therefore, there is an urgent need for new therapeutic options. In this context, dietary supplements containing natural compounds capable of stabilizing the transthyretin (TTR) protein could represent a promising approach to contrast the disease progression, potentially supporting the therapeutic effects of the aforementioned drugs. In light of this, the present review highlights and analyzes the natural compounds that have most recently been reported in the literature as TTR stabilizers. In particular, the studies elucidating the potential of these compounds in the treatment of ATTR, along with the available crystallographic data explaining their binding mode to TTR, are reported. Overall, although the use of natural compounds as supplements shows promise in managing ATTR, further research is still needed to explore its feasibility and confirm its effectiveness. Hopefully, this work will help shed light on these issues and serve as a useful starting point for the development of new strategies to treat this disease. Full article
