For the precise description of gas physical processes in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, an advanced and robust numerical framework for the simulation of transient particle densities in the course of corona discharges is developed in this work. The aim is the scalable and consistent modeling of the space charge density under realistic conditions. The core component of the framework is a discontinuous Galerkin method that ensures the conservative properties of the underlying hyperbolic problem. The space charge density at the electrode surface is imposed as a dynamic boundary condition via Lagrange multipliers. To increase the numerical stability and convergence rate, a homotopy approach is also integrated. For the experimental validation, a measurement concept was realised that uses a subtraction method to specifically remove the displacement current component in the signal and thus enables an isolated recording of the transient ion current with superimposed voltage stresses. The experimental results on a small scale agree with the numerical predictions and prove the quality of the model. On this basis, the framework is transferred to hybrid HVDC overhead line systems with a bipolar design. In the event of a fault, significant transient space charge densities can be seen there, especially when superimposed with new types of voltage waveforms. The framework thus provides a reliable contribution to insulation coordination in complex HVDC systems and enables the realistic analysis of electrohydrodynamic coupling effects on an industrial scale. Application of a DPSIR-Based Causal Framework for Sustainable Urban Riparian Forests: Insights from Text Mining and a Case Study in Seoul

As urbanization accelerates and climate change intensifies, the ecological integrity of urban riparian forests faces growing threats, underscoring the need for a systematic framework to guide their sustainable management. To address this gap, we developed a causal framework by applying text mining and sentence classification to 1001 abstracts from previous studies, structured within the DPSIR (Driver–Pressure–State–Impact–Response) model. The analysis identified six dominant thematic clusters—water quality, ecosystem services, basin and land use management, climate-related stressors, anthropogenic impacts, and greenhouse gas emissions—which reflect the multifaceted concerns surrounding urban riparian forest research. These themes were synthesized into a structured causal model that illustrates how urbanization, land use, and pollution contribute to ecological degradation, while also suggesting potential restoration pathways. To validate its applicability, the framework was applied to four major urban streams in Seoul, where indicator-based analysis and correlation mapping revealed meaningful linkages among urban drivers, biodiversity, air quality, and civic engagement. Ultimately, by integrating large-scale text mining with causal inference modeling, this study offers a transferable approach to support adaptive planning and evidence-based decision-making under the uncertainties posed by climate change. This study proposes an innovative Thermodynamic Activity Controlled Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (TAC-HCCI) strategy for diesel–natural gas dual-fuel engines, aiming to achieve high thermal efficiency while maintaining low emissions. By employing numerical simulation methods, the effects of the intake pressure, intake temperature, EGR rate, intake valve closing timing, diesel injection timing, diesel injection pressure, and diesel injection quantity on engine combustion, energy distribution, and emission characteristics were systematically investigated. Through a comprehensive analysis of optimized operating conditions, a high-efficiency and low-emission TAC-HCCI combustion technology for dual-fuel engines was developed. The core mechanism of TAC-HCCI combustion control was elucidated through an analysis of the equivalence ratio and temperature distribution of the in-cylinder mixture. The results indicate that under the constraints of PCP ≤ 30 ± 1 MPa and RI ≤ 5 ± 0.5 MW/m2, the TAC-HCCI technology achieves a gross indicated mean effective pressure (IMEPg) of 24.0 bar, a gross indicated thermal efficiency (ITEg) of up to 52.0%, and indicated specific NOx emissions (ISNOx) as low as 1.0 g/kW∙h. To achieve low combustion loss, reduced heat transfer loss, and high thermal efficiency, it is essential to ensure the complete combustion of the mixture while maintaining low combustion temperatures. Moreover, a reduced diesel injection quantity combined with a high injection pressure can effectively suppress NOx emissions. Full article

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation methodology was implemented to model transient heating processes in steel industry reheating furnaces, targeting combustion efficiency optimization and carbon emission reduction. The effects of oxygen concentration (O2%) and different fuel types on the flow and heat transfer characteristics were investigated under both oxygen-enriched combustion and MILD oxy-fuel combustion. The results indicate that MILD oxy-fuel combustion promotes flue gas entrainment via high-velocity oxygen jets, leading to a substantial improvement in the uniformity of the furnace temperature field. The effect is most obvious at O2% = 31%. MILD oxy-fuel combustion significantly reduces NOx emissions, achieving levels that are one to two orders of magnitude lower than those under oxygen-enriched combustion. Under MILD conditions, the oxygen mass fraction in flue gas remains below 0.001 when O2% ≤ 81%, indicating effective dilution. In contrast, oxygen-enriched combustion leads to a sharp rise in flame temperature with an increasing oxygen concentration, resulting in a significant increase in NOx emissions. Elevating the oxygen concentration enhances both thermal efficiency and the energy-saving rate for both combustion modes; however, the rate of improvement diminishes when O2% exceeds 51%. Based on these findings, MILD oxy-fuel combustion using mixed gas or natural gas is recommended for reheating furnaces operating at O2% = 51–71%, while coke oven gas is not. Full article

The widespread adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel has driven the development of LNG bunkering operations in global ports. Major international hubs, such as Shenzhen Port, have implemented ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering practices. However, this process entails unique safety risks, particularly hazards associated with vapor cloud dispersion caused by bunkering hose releases. This study employs the Phast software developed by DNV to systematically simulate LNG release scenarios during STS operations, integrating real-world meteorological data and storage conditions. The dynamic effects of transfer flow rates, release heights, and release directions on vapor cloud dispersion are quantitatively analyzed under daytime and nighttime conditions. The results demonstrate that transfer flow rate significantly regulates dispersion range, with recommendations to limit the rate below 1500 m3/h and prioritize daytime operations to mitigate risks. Release heights exceeding 10 m significantly amplify dispersion effects, particularly at night (nighttime dispersion area at a height of 20 m is 3.5 times larger than during the daytime). Optimizing release direction effectively suppresses dispersion, with vertically downward releases exhibiting minimal impact. Horizontal releases require avoidance of downwind alignment, and daytime operations are prioritized to reduce lateral dispersion risks. Full article

Steel is an important product in many engineering sectors; however, steelmaking remains one of the largest CO2 emitters. Therefore, new governmental policies drive the steelmaking industry toward a cleaner and more sustainable operation such as the gas-based direct reduction–electric arc furnace process. To become carbon neutral, utilizing more scrap is one of the feasible solutions to achieve this goal. Addressing knowledge gaps regarding scrap heterogeneity (size, shape, and composition) is essential to evaluate the effects of increased scrap ratios in basic oxygen furnace (BOF) operations. This review systematically examines heat and mass transfer correlations relevant to scrap melting in BOF steelmaking, with a focus on low Prandtl number fluids (thick thermal boundary layer) and dense particulate systems. Notably, a majority of these correlations are designed for fluids with high Prandtl numbers. Even for the ones tailored for low Prandtl, they lack the introduction of the porosity effect which alters the melting behavior in such high temperature systems. The review is divided into two parts. First, it surveys heat transfer correlations for single elements (rods, spheres, and prisms) under natural and forced convection, emphasizing their role in predicting melting rates and estimating maximum shell size. Second, it introduces three numerical modeling approaches, highlighting that the computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD–DEM) offers flexibility in modeling diverse scrap geometries and contact interactions while being computationally less demanding than particle-resolved direct numerical simulation (PR-DNS). Nevertheless, the review identifies a critical gap: no current CFD–DEM framework simultaneously captures shell formation (particle growth) and non-isotropic scrap melting (particle shrinkage), underscoring the need for improved multiphase models to enhance BOF operation. Highly efficient and stable non-Pt-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) are highly desirable in energy conversion and storage systems. Herein, we report a hydrothermally synthesized metal chalcogenide cluster-based framework (NCF-3-Mn), which is decorated with transition metal complexes ([Mn(TEPA)]2+, TEPA = tetraethylenepentamine), for an electrocatalytic O2 reduction reaction (ORR). Benefitting from the abundant Mn-S bonds and Mn-N-C structures in NCF-3-Mn, it was found that NCF-3-Mn displayed a high onset potential (0.90 V) and an efficient four-electron transfer reaction pathway, which are much better than those of its analogue framework (T2-GaSbS). Moreover, NCF-3-Mn also exhibited a considerable long-term stability and methanol resistance toward ORRs. This work will present new opportunities for exploring the utilization of chalcogenide frameworks as novel non-Pt electrocatalysts for ORRs. Full article

High-performance hydrogen gas sensors have gained considerable interest for their crucial function in reducing H2 explosion risk. Although MoS2 has good potential for chemical sensing, its application in hydrogen detection at room temperature is limited by slow response and incomplete recovery. In this work, Pd-doped MoS2 thin films are deposited on a Si substrate, forming Pd-doped MoS2/Si heterojunctions via magnetron co-sputtering. The incorporation of Pd nanoparticles significantly enhances the catalytic activity for hydrogen adsorption and facilitates more efficient electron transfer. Owing to its distinct structural characteristics and sharp interface properties, the fabricated Pd-doped MoS2/Si heterojunction device exhibits excellent H2 sensing performance under room temperature conditions. The gas sensor device achieves an impressive sensing response of ~6.4 × 103% under 10,000 ppm H2 concentration, representing a 110% improvement compared to pristine MoS2. Furthermore, the fabricated heterojunction device demonstrates rapid response and recovery times (24.6/12.2 s), excellent repeatability, strong humidity resistance, and a ppb-level detection limit. These results demonstrate the promising application prospects of Pd-doped MoS2/Si heterojunctions in the development of advanced gas sensing devices. Full article

Urban transport is a key driver of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe, making its decarbonization essential to achieving EU climate neutrality targets. This study examines how European strategies, such as the Green Deal, the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, and the Fit for 55 package, are reflected in Romania’s transport policies, with a focus on implementation challenges and urban outcomes in Bucharest. By combining policy analysis, stakeholder mapping, and comparative mobility indicators, the paper critically assesses Bucharest’s current reliance on private vehicles, underperforming public transport satisfaction, and limited progress on active mobility. The study develops a context-sensitive reform framework for the Romanian capital, grounded in transferable lessons from Western and Central European cities. It emphasizes coordinated metropolitan governance, public trust-building, phased car-restraint measures, and investment alignment as key levers. Rather than merely cataloguing policy intentions, the paper offers practical recommendations informed by systemic governance barriers and public attitudes. The findings will contribute to academic debates on urban mobility transitions in post-socialist cities and provide actionable insights for policymakers seeking to operationalize EU decarbonization goals at the metropolitan scale. The production of iron and steel plays a significant role in the anthropogenic carbon footprint, accounting for 7% of global GHG emissions. In the context of CO2 mitigation, the steelmaking industry is looking to potentially replace traditional carbon-based ironmaking processes with hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore in shaft furnaces. Before industrialization, detailed modeling and parametric studies were needed to determine the proper operating parameters of this promising technology. The modeling approach selected here was to complement REDUCTOR, a detailed finite-volume model of the shaft furnace, which can simulate the gas and solid flows, heat transfers and reaction kinetics throughout the reactor, with an extension that describes the whole gas circuit of the direct reduction plant, including the top gas recycling set up and the fresh hydrogen production. Innovative strategies (such as the redirection of part of the bustle gas to a cooling inlet, the use of high nitrogen content in the gas, and the introduction of a hot solid burden) were investigated, and their effects on furnace operation (gas utilization degree and total energy consumption) were studied with a constant metallization target of 94%. It has also been demonstrated that complete metallization can be achieved at little expense. These strategies can improve the thermochemical state of the furnace and lead to different energy requirements. Full article

The geometric design of flow channels in bipolar plates is one of the critical features of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), as it determines the power output of the fuel cell and has a significant impact on its performance and durability. The function of the bipolar plate is to guide the transfer of reactant gases to the gas diffusion layer and catalytic layer inside the PEMFC, while removing unreacted gases and gas–liquid byproducts. Therefore, the design of the bipolar plate flow channel is directly related to the water and thermal management of the PEMFC. In order to improve the comprehensive performance of PEMFCs and ensure their safe and stable operation, it is necessary to design the flow channels in bipolar plates rationally and effectively. This study addresses the limitations of existing bipolar plate flow channels by proposing a new coupling of serpentine and radial channels. The distribution of oxygen, water concentrations, and temperature inside the channel is simulated using the multi-physics simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics 6.0. The performance of this novel design is compared with conventional flow channels, with a particular focus on the pressure drop and current density to evaluate changes in the output performance of the PEMFC. The results show that the maximum current density of this novel design is increased by 67.36% and 10.43% compared to straight channel and single serpentine channels, respectively. The main contribution of this research is the innovative design of a new coupling of serpentine and radial channels in bipolar plates, which improves the overall performance of the PEMFC. This study provides theoretical support for the design of bipolar plate flow channels in PEMFCs and holds significant importance for the green development of energy. Full article

The overall efficiency of combining denitrification and volatile organic compound (VOC) removal through selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology is currently mainly limited by the VOC removal aspect. However, existing studies have not studied the microscopic mechanism of the interaction between VOCs and catalysts, failing to provide a theoretical basis for catalysts. Therefore, this work explored the interaction mechanisms between SCR catalysts doped with different additives and typical VOCs (acetone and toluene) in flue gas based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results showed that the VNi-TiO2 surface exhibited a high adsorption energy of −0.80 eV for acetone and a high adsorption energy of −1.02 eV for toluene on the VMn-TiO2 surface. Electronic structure analysis revealed the VMn-TiO2 and VNi-TiO2 surfaces exhibited more intense orbital hybridization with acetone and toluene, promoting charge transfer between the two and resulting in stronger interactions. The analysis of temperature on adsorption free energy showed that VMn-TiO2 and VNi-TiO2 still maintained high activity at high temperatures. This work contributes to clarifying the interaction mechanism between SCR and VOCs and enhancing the VOC removal efficiency. Full article

Our investigation reveals that the thermal conductivity of UO2 is influenced by defect concentration, defect type, and temperature. Fission products and irradiation defects result in a decrease in thermal conductivity, but they have markedly different impacts on phonon scattering mechanisms. Metal cations tend to scatter low-frequency phonons (less than 5.8 THz), while the fission gas xenon scatters both low-frequency and high-frequency phonons (greater than 5.8 THz), depending on its occupancy at lattice sites. Uranium vacancies scatter low-frequency phonons, while oxygen vacancies scatter high-frequency phonons. When uranium and oxygen vacancies coexist, they scatter phonons across the entire frequency spectrum, which further results in a significant reduction in the thermal conductivity of UO2. Our calculated results align well with experimental data across a wide temperature range and provide fundamental insights into the heat transfer mechanisms in irradiated UO2. These findings are essential for establishing a thermal conductivity database for UO2 under various irradiation conditions and benefit the development of advanced high-performance UO2 fuel. Numerical Study of Gas Dynamics and Condensate Removal in Energy-Efficient Recirculation Modes in Train Cabins

Maintaining the required relative humidity values in the vehicle cabin is an important HVAC task, along with considerations related to the temperature, velocity, air pressure and noise. Deviation from the optimal values worsens the psycho-physiological state of the driver and affects the energy efficiency of the train. In this study, a model of liquid film formation on and removal from various cabin surfaces was constructed using the fundamental Navier–Stokes hydrodynamic equations. A special transport model based on the liquid vapor diffusion equation was used to simulate the air environment inside the cabin. The evaporation and condensation of surface films were simulated using the Euler film model, which directly considers liquid–gas and gas–liquid transitions. Numerical results were obtained using the RANS equations and a turbulence model by means of the finite volume method in Ansys CFD. Conjugate fields of temperature, velocity and moisture concentration were constructed for various time intervals, and the dependence values for the film thicknesses on various surfaces relative to time were determined. The verification was conducted in comparison with the experimental data, based on the protocol for measuring the microclimate indicators in workplaces, as applied to the train cabin: the average ranges encompassed temperature changes from 11% to 18%, and relative humidity ranges from 16% to 26%. Comparison with the results of other studies, without considering the phase transition and condensation, shows that, for the warm mode, the average air temperature in the cabin with condensation is 12.5% lower than without condensation, which is related to the process of liquid evaporation from the heated walls. The difference in temperature values for the model with and without condensation ranged from −12.5% to +4.9%. We demonstrate that, with an effective mode of removing condensate film from the window surface, including recirculation modes, the energy consumption of the climate control system improves significantly, but this requires a more accurate consideration of thermodynamic parameters and relative humidity. Thus, considering the moisture condensation model reveals that this variable can significantly affect other parameters of the microclimate in cabins: in particular, the temperature. This means that it should be considered in the numerical modeling, along with the basic heat transfer equations. Full article

Roses are one of the most essential ornamental flowers in the world. At present, traditional techniques such as cross breeding are mainly used in rose breeding. The inefficiency of the in vitro regeneration system has become the limiting step for the innovation and genetic improvement of rose germplasm resources. A tissue culture rapid propagation system of Rosa ‘Pompon Veranda’ was established using the stem segments with shoots as the initial experimental material. The results showed that the best disinfection method was to soak the explants in 75% ethanol for 1 min, and then soak them in 15% sodium hypochlorite solution for 15 min. The contamination rate was only about 6%. The best rooting medium for tissue culture seedlings was 1/2MS with 0.1 mg∙L−1 NAA, and the rooting rate can reach around 95%. On this basis, calluses were induced by using leaflets of tissue-cultured seedlings as explants. The results showed that the optimal medium for inducing callus tissue was MS + 5.0 mg∙L−1 2,4-D, with an induction rate of 100%. The calluses were cultured in the medium of MS with 0.01 mg∙L−1 NAA, 1.5 mg∙L−1 TDZ and 0.1 mg∙L−1 GA3 for 12 days in the dark and then transferred to light conditions. The differentiation rate of callus was 10.87%. On the medium of MS with 0.5 mg∙L−1 6-BA, 0.004 mg∙L−1 NAA and 0.1 mg∙L−1 GA3, the shoots could regenerate into whole plants. This study has established an in vitro regeneration system of R. ‘Pompon Veranda’, which is a key perquisite for the subsequent establishment of its genetic transformation system. Moreover, this method will also be an important reference for studies on quality traits such as floral scent and prickles of Rosa plants. Full article
