This study investigates the friction stir joining of AA6082-T6 aluminum alloy and Noryl GFN2 polymer in a buttstrap configuration, targeting the development of lightweight cylindrical-shaped structures where the polymer provides thermal, chemical, and electrical insulation, while the aluminum ensures mechanical integrity. A parametric analysis was carried out to assess the ability to produce friction stir buttstrap composite panels in a single processing step and assess the resulting tensile and flexural behavior. To that end, travel and rotating speeds ranging from 2150 to 2250 rpm, and 100 to 140 mm/min, respectively, were employed while keeping plunge depth and the tilt angle constant. A total of nine composite joints were successfully produced and subsequently subjected to both tensile and four-point bending tests. The tensile and flexural strength results ranged from 80 to 139 MPa, and 39 to 47 MPa, respectively. Moreover, the microstructural examination revealed that all joints exhibited a defect within the joining region and its size and shape had a significant effect on tensile strength, whereas the flexural strength was less affected with more uniform results. The joining region was also characterized by a decrease in hardness, particularly in the pin-affected region on the aluminum end of the joint, exhibiting a W-shaped pattern. Contrarily, on the polymeric end of the joining region, no significant change in hardness was observed. Full article

The mechanics of an elastic sheet reinforced with fiber mesh is investigated when undergoing bilateral in-plane bending and stretching. The strain energy of FRC is formulated by accounting for the matrix strain energy contribution and the fiber network deformations of extension, flexure, and torsion, where the strain energy potential of the matrix material is characterized via the Mooney–Rivlin strain energy model and the fiber kinematics is computed via the first and second gradient of deformations. By applying the variational principle on the strain energy of FRC, the Euler–Lagrange equilibrium equations are derived and then solved numerically. The theoretical results highlight the matrix and meshwork deformations of FRC subjected to bilateral bending and stretching simultaneously, and it is found that the interaction between bilateral extension and bending manipulates the matrix and network deformation. It is theoretically observed that the transverse Lagrange strain peaks near the bilateral boundary while the longitudinal strain is intensified inside the FRC domain. The continuum model further demonstrates the bidirectional mesh network deformations in the case of plain woven, from which the extension and flexure kinematics of fiber units are illustrated to examine the effects of fiber unit deformations on the overall deformations of the fiber network. To reduce the observed matrix-network dislocation in the case of plain network reinforcement, the pantographic network reinforcement is investigated, suggesting that the bilateral stretch results in the reduced intersection angle at the mesh joints in the FRC domain. For validation of the continuum model, the obtained results are cross-examined with the existing experimental results depicting the failure mode of conventional fiber-reinforced composites to demonstrate the practical utility of the proposed model. A straightforward and versatile numerical approach is proposed for the nonlinear analysis of single and double-curvature masonry structures. The method is designed to broaden accessibility to both experienced and less specialized users. Masonry units are discretized with elastic quadrilateral elements, while mortar joints are modeled with a combination of elastic orthotropic plate elements or shear panels and elastic perfectly brittle trusses (cutoff bars). This method employs the simplest inelastic finite element available in any commercial software to lump nonlinearities exclusively within the mortar joints. It effectively captures the failure of curved structures under Mode 1 deformation, reproducing the typical collapse mechanism of unreinforced arches and vaults via flexural plastic hinges. The proposed method is benchmarked through three case studies drawn from the literature, each supported by experimental data and numerical results of varying complexity. A comprehensive evaluation of the global force–displacement curves, along with the analysis of the thrust line and the evolution of nonlinearities within the model, demonstrates the effectiveness, reliability, and simplicity of the approach proposed. By bridging the gap between advanced simulation and practical application, the approach provides a robust tool suitable for a wide range of users. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the behavior of unreinforced curved masonry structures and lays a base for future advancements in the analysis and conservation of historical heritage. Rapid connectors for shield tunnels represent a critical advancement in underground engineering construction. This study proposes a novel auto-lock connector, detailing its structure and working principle. The flexural behavior of the auto-lock joint is investigated through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, with a comprehensive evaluation of influencing factors. The results indicate that joint opening increases with reduced axial force, peaking at 24.1 mm under negative bending under a 100 kN axial load. The ultimate bending moment demonstrates a nonlinear variation with axial force. At low axial forces, increasing material strength or dimensions enhances joint flexural capacity, with more pronounced improvements under lower loads. This research establishes a theoretical foundation for the practical application of auto-lock connectors. Full article

We designed detachable steel sleeves to reinforce wooden joints and improve their integrity under earthquake action and investigated their mechanical properties. Monotonic bending tests were performed on a half-tenon pure wooden joint and a joint strengthened by a detachable steel sleeve. More obvious tenon pulling-out failure was observed in the pure wood joint; in comparison, only slight extrusion fracture of wooden beams and extrusion deformation of steel sleeves occurred in the wood joint reinforced by a detachable steel sleeve. Our test results showed that the initial rotational stiffness of the strengthened joint, JG1, was increased by 495.4% compared with that of the unstrengthened joint, JG0. The yield bending moment increased by 425.9%, and the ultimate bending moment increased by 627.5%, which indicated that the mechanical performance was significantly improved when the joint was reinforced by a detachable steel sleeve. Numerical simulations of different components were performed with finite element analysis software to analyze the mechanical performance of the reinforced joint. It was found that the stiffness and ultimate flexural performance of the joint could be increased by setting stiffeners on the steel sleeve and connecting the wooden column with self-tapping screws. The results of the tests were compared with those obtained through finite element analysis, and a high degree of accuracy was achieved, which could provide a theoretical basis for the reinforcement of timber structural buildings. This study investigates the fracture toughness of adhesive joints between carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites (CFRP) and boron-alloyed high-strength steel under Mode I and II loading, based on linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). Two adhesive types were examined: the excess resin from the prepreg composite, forming a thin layer, and a toughened structural epoxy (Sika Power-533), designed for the automotive industry, forming a thick layer. Modified double cantilever beam (DCB) and end-notched flexure (ENF) specimens were used for testing. The results show that using Sika Power-533 increases the critical energy release rate by up to 30 times compared to the prepreg resin, highlighting the impact of adhesive layer thickness. Joints with the thick Sika adhesive performed similarly regardless of whether uncoated or Al–Si-coated steel was used, indicating the composite/Sika interface as the failure point. In contrast, the thin resin adhesive layer exhibited poor bonding with uncoated steel, which detached during sample preparation. This suggests that, for thin layers, the resin/steel interface is the weakest link. These findings underline the importance of adhesive selection and layer thickness for optimizing joint performance in composite–metal hybrid structures. Full article

This paper addresses inherent limitations in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) undercarriages hindering vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities on uneven slopes and obstacles. Robotic landing gear (RLG) designs have been proposed to address these limitations; however, existing designs are typically limited to ground slopes of 6–15°, beyond which rollover would happen. Moreover, articulated RLG concepts come with added complexity and weight penalties due to multiple drivetrain components. Previous research has highlighted that even a minor 3-degree slope change can increase the dynamic rollover risks by 40%. Therefore, the design optimization of robotic landing gear for enhanced VTOL capabilities requires a multidisciplinary framework that integrates static analysis, dynamic simulation, and control strategies for operations on complex terrain. This paper presents a novel, hybrid, compliant, belt-driven, three-legged RLG system, supported by a multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) methodology, aimed at achieving enhanced VTOL capabilities on uneven surfaces and moving platforms like ship decks. The proposed system design utilizes compliant mechanisms featuring a series of three-flexure hinges (3SFH), to reduce the number of articulated drivetrain components and actuators. This results in a lower system weight, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced durability, compared to earlier fully actuated, articulated, four-legged, two-jointed designs. Additionally, the compliant belt-driven actuation mitigates issues such as backlash, wear, and high maintenance, while enabling smoother torque transfer and improved vibration damping relative to earlier three-legged cable-driven four-bar link RLG systems. The use of lightweight yet strong materials—aluminum and titanium—enables the legs to bend 19 and 26.57°, respectively, without failure. An animated simulation of full-contact landing tests, performed using a proportional-derivative (PD) controller and ship deck motion input, validate the performance of the design. Simulations are performed for a VTOL UAV, with two flexible legs made of aluminum, incorporating circular flexure hinges, and a passive third one positioned at the tail. The simulation results confirm stable landings with a 2 s settling time and only 2.29° of overshoot, well within the FAA-recommended maximum roll angle of 2.9°. Compared to the single-revolute (1R) model, the implementation of the optimal 3R Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model (PRBM) further improves accuracy by achieving a maximum tip deflection error of only 1.2%. It is anticipated that the proposed hybrid design would also offer improved durability and ease of maintenance, thereby enhancing functionality and safety in comparison with existing robotic landing gear systems. A novel endplate bolted rigid joint is proposed in this study for connecting circular concrete-filled steel tube (CCFT) columns to wide-flange (WF) steel beams. The seismic performance and potential failure mechanisms of the proposed joint were investigated through quasi-static cyclic tests and finite element (FE) simulations. This study aims to address several engineering challenges commonly observed in existing joint configurations, including an irrational force-resisting mechanism, complicated detailing and installation, on-site construction difficulties, constraints on beam size, and limited repairability. By optimizing the force transfer path, the new joint effectively reduces the number of critical tension welds, thereby enhancing the ductility and reliability. The experimental results indicate that the joint exhibits adequate flexural strength, stiffness, and ductility, with stable moment–rotation hysteresis loops under cyclic loading. Moreover, full restoration of the joint can be achieved by replacing only the steel beam and endplate, facilitating post-earthquake repair. FE analysis reveals that, under the ultimate bending moment at the beam end, multiple through cracks develop in the high-strength grout—which serves as a key load-transferring component—and significant debonding occurs between the grout and the surrounding steel members. However, due to confinement from adjacent components, these internal cracks do not compromise the overall strength and stiffness of the joint. This research provides an efficient and practical connection solution, along with valuable experimental insights, for the application of CCFT columns in moment-resisting frames located in high seismic zones. The connection zones between precast concrete composite slabs and composite walls commonly experience severe reinforcement conflicts due to protruding rebars, significantly reducing construction efficiency. To address this, a novel slotted concrete composite slab–composite shear wall (SCS-CW) connection without protruding rebars is proposed in this study. In this novel connection, rectangular slots are introduced at the ends of the precast slabs, and lap-spliced reinforcement is placed within the slots to enable force transfer across the joint region. To investigate the static performance of SCS-CW connections, four groups of connection specimens were designed and fabricated. Using the structural detailing of the connection zone as the variable parameter, the mechanical performance of each specimen group was analyzed. The results show that the specimens demonstrated bending failure behavior. The key failure modes were yielding of the longitudinal reinforcement in the post-cast layer, yielding of the lap-spliced reinforcement, and concrete crushing at the precast slab ends within the plastic hinge zone. Compared to composite slab–composite wall connections with protruding rebars, the SCS-CW connections demonstrated superior ductility and a higher load-carrying capacity, satisfying the design requirements. Additionally, it was revealed that the anchorage length of lap-spliced reinforcement significantly affected the ultimate load-carrying capacity and ductility of SCS-CW connections, thus highlighting anchorage length as a critical design parameter for these connections. This study also presents methods for calculating the flexural bearing capacity and flexural stiffness of SCS-CW connections. Finally, finite element modeling was conducted on the connections to further investigate the influences of the lap-spliced reinforcement quantity, diameter, and anchorage length on the mechanical performance of the connections, and corresponding design recommendations are provided. This paper presents a novel redundant-actuated 4-PSS&S compliant parallel micro-rotation mechanism (P represents the actuated prismatic joint and S denotes the spherical pair) with three rotational degrees of freedom. First, compliance models of the flexure spherical hinge, each branch and the whole mechanism are established using the compliance matrix method. Then, the mechanism is simplified as an equivalent spring system to establish two kinetostatic models, with their correctness validated through finite element simulations. Finally, a comparative analysis is conducted on the performance of the 3-PSS&S mechanism, non-redundant-actuated 4-PSS&S mechanism and redundant-actuated 4-PSS&S mechanism. The results show the following: ① For the 4-PSS&S mechanism, redundant actuation with optimized actuating force distribution effectively reduces the peak actuating force by up to 50% (average 40.95%), achieving an average 10.79% reduction compared to the 3-PSS&S mechanism. ② The 4-PSS&S mechanism’s output stiffness increases by 26.68% in the θx and θy directions and by 33.31% in the θz direction compared to the 3-PSS&S mechanism. ③ Optimal force distribution significantly reduces the parasitic axis drift of the redundant-actuated 4-PSS&S mechanism at the constrained flexure spherical hinge S3, indicating higher motion accuracy. ④ The workspace volume of the redundant-actuated 4-PSS&S mechanism expands by 94.32% compared to the 3-PSS&S mechanism and by 372.89% compared to the non-redundant-actuated 4-PSS&S mechanism. To study the mechanical properties of asymmetric K-shaped square tubular joints with built-in stiffening rib lap joints, axial tensile tests were carried out on one K-shaped joint without built-in stiffening ribs and four K-shaped joints with built-in stiffening ribs using an electro-hydraulic servo structural testing system. The effects of the addition of stiffening ribs and the welding method of the stiffening ribs on the mechanical properties were studied comparatively. The failure mode of the K-shaped joint was obtained, and the strain distribution and peak displacement reaction force in the nodal region were analyzed. A finite element analysis of the K-shaped joint was carried out, and the finite element results were compared with the experimental results. The results showed that the addition of transverse reinforcement ribs and more complete welds shared the squeezing effect of the brace on the chord. Arranging more reinforcing ribs in the fittings makes the chord more uniformly stressed and absorbs more energy while increasing the flexural load capacity of the fittings’ side plates. The presence of a weld gives a short-lived temperature increase in the area around the crack, and the buckling of the structure causes the surface temperature in the buckling area to continue to increase for some time. The temperature change successfully localized where the structure was deforming and creating cracks. The addition of the reinforcing ribs resulted in a change in the deformation pattern of the model, and the difference occurred because the flexural capacity of the brace with the added reinforcing ribs was greater than that of the side plate buckling. New assembly methods for aircraft structural parts, such as skins and stringers, are being investigated to address issues like galvanic corrosion, stress concentration, and weight. For this, many researchers are examining the mechanical and fracture properties of adhesively bonded parts through experimental testing and numerical modelling methods, including Cohesive Zone Modelling (CZM), Compliance-Based Beam Method (CBBM), Double Cantilever Beam (DCB), and End Notched Flexural (ENF) tests. In this study, similarly, DCB and ENF tests were conducted on skin and beam parts bonded with AF163-2K adhesive using CBBM and then modelled and analysed in ABAQUS CAE 2018 software. Four different skin–stringer connection models were analysed, respectively, using only adhesive, only rivets, both adhesive and rivets, and also a reduced number of rivets in the adhesively bonded joint. This study found that adhesive increased initial strength, while rivets improved strength after the adhesive began to crack. Using a hybrid connection that combines both rivets and adhesive has been observed to enhance the overall strength and durability of the assembly. Then, experimental results were compared, and four numerical models for skin–stringer connections (adhesive only, rivets only, adhesive and rivets, and adhesive with reduced rivets) were analysed and discussed. Thermal and Flood Resiliency Evaluation of Rigid Pavement Using Various Pavement Characteristics

Temperature variations have a significant impact on the performance and durability of rigid (concrete) pavement. As concrete is subjected to daily and seasonal temperature changes, it experiences thermal expansion and contraction. These movements, if not properly managed, can lead to cracking, joint deterioration, and loss of structural integrity. The pavement system is adversely affected by intense heat and significant flooding. This study aims to analyze the impact of several parameters on the performance of rigid pavement under typical, thermal, and flooding situations. This study investigates the properties of concrete and the dimensional design of rigid pavement with FEACONS IV software to assess their impact on the performance of concrete pavement during thermal and flooding conditions. The main conclusions of this study derived from the FEACONS IV analysis are as follows. Rigid pavement can enhance load-carrying capacity due to a lower elastic modulus, adequate flexural strength, and aggregates with a lower coefficient of thermal expansion. Increased thickness of concrete slabs and shorter slab lengths assist in minimizing load- and temperature-induced stresses. The increase in the subgrade modulus reaction value during flooding conditions improves pavement strength. However, in higher thermal conditions, a higher subgrade reaction modulus can increase the stress induced by temperature and load. Rigid pavement using porous limestone aggregate exhibits a reduced elastic modulus and coefficient of thermal expansion, suggesting higher resilience compared to rigid pavement composed of river gravel or granite. The findings suggest that higher thermal conditions will cause pavement damage. Agencies need to account for higher temperatures while designing and maintaining pavement. Flooding saturates the concrete pavement and subgrade layer, adversely affecting its performance over time. Full article

A high-gear-ratio anti-backlash 3K planetary gearbox with a preloaded flexure-based carrier is a suitable reducer for robot joints owning to its compact design and high transmission accuracy. However, to design such a 3K planetary gearbox with high bidirectional efficiencies for backdrivable robot joints, it is critical to develop an accurate transmission efficiency model to predict the effects of the preloaded flexure-based carrier on the efficiency of the 3K planetary gearbox. To determine the meshing forces of gear pairs in the 3K planetary gearbox, a quasi-static model is formulated according to tangential displacements of planet gears resulting from the preloaded flexure-based carrier. Considering the reverse meshing forces in the anti-backlash 3K planetary gearbox, a modified efficiency model is developed and the bidirectional transmission efficiencies are analyzed. Simulation results show that both forward and backward transmission efficiencies of the anti-backlash 3K planetary gearbox decrease as the preload increases, while they all increase with the increasing load torque. It is also revealed that the preload primarily affects the meshing efficiency of the sun–planet gear pair. Four different carrier prototypes are fabricated for experiments. The average errors between the predicted and measured results for forward and backward transmission efficiencies are 2.30% and 4.01%, respectively. Full article

Study on the Bending Performance of Connection Joints in a New Type of Modular Steel Structure Emergency Repair Pier

The pier-type repair equipment for bridges is a crucial branch of bridge emergency repair. However, the existing bridge pier repair equipment predominantly utilizes rod systems, which require substantial assembly work, hindering the rapid restoration of damaged bridges. Modular steel structure buildings, as a highly integrated form of prefabricated construction, can play a significant role in emergency rescue operations. Based on the modular architectural design concept, this paper proposes a new type of modular steel structure emergency repair pier joint that facilitates rapid assembly and connection between modular units. Using ABAQUS 2022 software to establish a finite element model of the joint, the bending performance under lateral displacement loads perpendicular to the joint opening direction (X-direction in the model coordinate system) and parallel to the joint opening direction (Z-direction in the model coordinate system) is analyzed. The influence of the width-to-thickness ratio of the upper corner piece base plate D/t1 (where D is the width of the upper corner piece base plate and t1 is the thickness of the upper corner plate), the height-to-thickness ratio of the lower corner piece top plate h/t2 (where h is the height of the protrusion of the lower corner piece and t2 is the thickness of the lower corner piece top plate), the height of the protrusion of the lower corner piece (h), and the bolt diameter (d) on the bending performance of the joint is investigated. Recommendations for the design values of the joint are provided. Then, the flexural behavior of the joint under 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 axial compression ratios is studied, respectively. The results show that with the increase of axial compression ratio, the yield rotation angle and ultimate rotation angle of the joint decrease, and the bearing capacity decreases faster after the joint reaches the ultimate bearing capacity. When the joint is subjected to the X-direction horizontal lateral displacement load, the initial flexural stiffness and flexural capacity of the joint increase with an increase in the axial compression ratio. When subjected to the horizontal lateral displacement load in the Z-direction, the initial bending stiffness of the joint increases with an increase in the axial compression ratio, and the bending capacity does not change much. In addition, the joint is classified; from the perspective of load-bearing capacity, it is a partially resistant joint, and from the perspective of stiffness, it is a semi-rigid joint. Finally, a simplified calculation model for the joint is proposed based on the component method. Full article
