This study investigates the thermal stability and microstructural evolution of the solid electrolyte medium used in DLyte® dry electropolishing and dry anodizing processes. Samples were thermally aged between 30 °C and 45 °C to simulate Joule heating during industrial operation. Visual and SEM analyses revealed shape deformation and microcrack formation at temperatures above 40 °C, potentially reducing particle packing efficiency and electrolyte performance. Particle size distribution shifted from bimodal to trimodal upon aging, with an overall size reduction of up to 39.5% due to dehydration effects, impacting ionic transport properties. Weight-loss measurements indicated a diffusion-limited dehydration mechanism, stabilizing at 15–16% mass loss. Fourier transform infrared analysis confirmed water removal while maintaining the essential sulfonic acid groups responsible for ionic conductivity. In dry anodizing tests on titanium, aged electrolytes enhanced process efficiency, producing TiO2 films with improved optical properties—color and brightness—while preserving thickness and uniformity (~70 nm). The results highlight the need to carefully control thermal exposure to maintain electrolyte integrity and ensure consistent process performance. Full article

Arabinoxylan is a polysaccharide with film-forming properties, present in corn fiber, and a low-value by-product. The extract has a deep brown color, producing films of the same shade, which may not be appealing. This study addresses, for the first time, the adsorption of colored compounds present in an arabinoxylan extract using resin MN102. The resin successfully adsorbed the colored compounds from the arabinoxylan extract. After four consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles, the efficiency of the resin was similar, only decreasing from 63.3% to 52.9%. Langmuir and Freundlich models were fitted to the results of adsorption isotherm experiments, with the Freundlich model demonstrating the best fit to the experimental results. A fixed-bed column loaded with the resin was used for the removal of the colored compounds from the arabinoxylan extract, and the effect of the volumetric flow rate was investigated. The Yan and log-Gompertz models showed the best fit to the experimental breakthrough curves. This study systematically evaluated the adsorption conditions, providing a comprehensive analysis of the performance of the resin in the removal of the colored compounds. Additionally, the ability of the extract to maintain its film-forming properties after decolorization was evaluated, and some of the film’s key characteristics were evaluated, namely its color, solubility in water and mechanical properties. Kefiran, the extracellular polysaccharide produced from the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) bacteria in kefir grains, with its well-documented functional and health-promoting properties, constitutes a promising biopolymer with a variety of possible uses. Its compatibility with other biopolymers, such as milk proteins, and its ability to form standalone cryogels allow it to be utilized for the fabrication of films with improved properties for applications in the food and biomedical–pharmaceutical industries. In the present work, the properties of kefiran films were investigated in the presence of milk proteins (sodium caseinate, native and heat-treated whey proteins, and their mixtures), alongside glycerol (as a plasticizer) and cryo-treatment of the film-forming solution prior to drying. A total of 24 kefiran films were fabricated and studied for their physical (thickness, moisture content, water solubility, color parameters and vapor adsorption), mechanical (tensile strength and elongation at break), and optical properties. Milk proteins increased film thickness, solubility and tensile strength and reduced water vapor adsorption. The hygroscopic effect of glycerol was mitigated in the presence of milk proteins and/or the application of cryo-treatment. Glycerol was the most effective at reducing the films’ opacity. Heat treatment of whey proteins proved to be the most effective in increasing film tensile strength, reducing, at the same time, the elongation at break, while sodium caseinates in combination with cryo-treatment resulted in films with high tensile strength and the highest elongation at break. Cryo-treatment, carried out in the present study through freezing followed by gradual thawing of the film-forming solution, proved to be the most effective factor in decreasing film roughness. Based on our results, proper selection of the film-forming solution composition and its treatment prior to drying can result in kefiran–glycerol films with favorable properties for particular applications. Developing innovative, low-cost halochromic materials for diagnosing microbial contamination in wounds and burns can effectively facilitate tissue regeneration. Here, we combine the pH-sensing capability of highly colorful red cabbage anthocyanins (RCAs) with their healing potential within a unique cellulose polymer film that mimics the skin matrix. Biological activities of RCA extract in bacterial cellulose (BC) showed no cytotoxicity and skin-sensitizing potential to human cells at concentrations of RCAs similar to those released from BC/RCA dressings (4.0–40.0 µg/mL). A decrease in cell viability and apoptosis was observed in human cancer cells with RCAs. The invisible eye detection of the early color change signal from RCAs in response to pH alteration by bacteria was recorded with a smartphone application. The incorporation of RCAs into BC polymer has altered the morphology of its matrix, resulting in a denser cellulose microfibril network. The complete coincidence of the vibrational modes detected in the absorption spectra of the cellulose/RCA composite with the modes in RCAs most likely indicates that RCAs retain their structure in the BC matrix. Affordable, sensitive halochromic BC/RCA hydrogels can be recommended for online monitoring of microbial contamination, making them accessible to patients. Full article

Electrochromic devices (ECDs) capable of modulating both visible color and infrared (IR) emissivity are promising for applications in smart thermal camouflage and multifunctional displays. However, conventional transmissive ECDs suffer from limited IR modulation due to the low IR transmittance of transparent electrodes. Here, we report a reflection-type electrochromic zinc-ion battery (HWEC-ZIB) using a self-doped polyaniline nanorod film (SP(ANI-MA)) as the active layer. By positioning the active material at the device surface, this structure avoids interference from transparent electrodes and enables broadband and efficient IR emissivity tuning. To prevent electrolyte-induced IR absorption, a thermal lamination encapsulation method is employed. The optimized device achieves emissivity modulation ranges of 0.28 (3–5 μm) and 0.19 (8–14 μm), delivering excellent thermal camouflage performance. It also exhibits a visible color change from earthy yellow to deep green, suitable for various natural environments. In addition, the HWEC-ZIB shows a high areal capacity of 72.15 mAh cm−2 at 0.1 mA cm−2 and maintains 80% capacity after 5000 cycles, demonstrating outstanding electrochemical stability. This work offers a versatile device platform integrating IR stealth, visual camouflage, and energy storage, providing a promising solution for next-generation adaptive camouflage and defense-oriented electronics. This work presents a comprehensive study of the structural, luminescent, and photoconversion properties of epitaxial composite phosphor converters based on single crystalline films of Ce3+-activated Ca2−xY1+xMg1+xSc1−xSi3O12:Ce (x = 0–0.25) (CYMSSG:Ce) garnet, grown using the liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) method on single-crystal Y3Al5O12 (YAG) and YAG:Ce substrates. The main goal of this study is to elucidate the structure–composition–property relationships that influence the photoluminescence and photoconversion efficiency of these film–substrate composite converters, aiming to optimize their performance in high-power white light-emitting diode (WLED) applications. Systematic variation in the Y3+/Sc3+/Mg2+ cationic ratios within the garnet structure, combined with the controlled tuning of film thickness (ranging from 19 to 67 µm for CYMSSG:Ce/YAG and 10–22 µm for CYMSSG:Ce/YAG:Ce structures), enabled the precise modulation of their photoconversion properties. Prototypes of phosphor-converted WLEDs (pc-WLEDs) were developed based on these epitaxial structures to assess their performance and investigate how the content and thickness of SCFs affect the colorimetric properties of SCFs and composite converters. Clear trends were observed in the Ce3+ emission peak position, intensity, and color rendering, induced by the Y3+/Sc3+/Mg2+ cation substitution in the film converter, film thickness, and activator concentrations in the substrate and film. These results may be useful for the design of epitaxial phosphor converters with tunable emission spectra based on the epitaxially grown structures of garnet compounds. Full article

A thermochromic cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) mixture was prepared using epoxies. The structural color of the CLCN film was tuned by changing the concentration of a chiral dopant and the polymerization temperature. It was found the yellow CLCN film can be used as a sensor for the discrimination of methanol and ethanol which was proposed to be driven by the difference between the solubility parameters. Moreover, a colorful pattern was prepared based on the thermochromic property of the CLC mixture, which could be applied for decoration and as a sensor for chloroform. Full article

The intense demand for alternatives to conventional plastics has increasingly motivated the development of biodegradable packaging. However, the ecological impact of these materials when discarded in natural settings has not yet been evaluated. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of films based on chia mucilage in different aquatic environments. The solubilization time varied according to water type, ranging from 40 min in ultrapure, deionized, and distilled water to 230 min in saline water. After solubilization, all water samples exhibited increased turbidity (from 1.04 to 15.73 NTU in deionized water) and apparent color (from 0 to 44 PCU in deionized water) as well as pH variations depending on ionic strength. Deionized water also showed the highest viscosity increase (>350 Pa·s at 1 s−1). UV–Vis spectra revealed a moderate rise in absorbance between 236 and 260 nm, indicating organic compound release. Regarding phytotoxicity, the solubilized films had no toxic effect and promoted a biostimulating effect on root elongation, with Relative Germination Index values exceeding 140% in most samples. These results reinforce the potential of chia-based films for controlled disposal, particularly in low-salinity environments, while highlighting the importance of evaluating post-solubilization interactions with aquatic systems. Caseinate–Carboxymethyl Chitosan Composite Edible Coating with Soybean Oil for Extending the Shelf Life of Blueberry Fruit

Utilizing edible films/coatings promises to extend the shelf life of fruits by controlling various physiological parameters (e.g., respiration and transpiration rates), maintaining firmness, and delaying fruit senescence. The influence of composite-based edible coatings made from sodium or calcium caseinate: carboxymethyl chitosan (75:25) on the postharvest quality of fresh blueberries was assessed over a 28-day storage period, on the basis of weight loss and changes in pH, firmness, color, titratable acidity, soluble solids content, mold and yeast count, and respiration rate. The pH of the blueberries increased over the period of storage, with significant differences observed between uncoated and coated (e.g., pH was 3.89, 3.17, and 3.62 at the end of the storage time for uncoated, Ca 75-1% SO, and Na 75-1% SO, respectively. Desirable lower pH values at the end of storage were obtained with the calcium caseinate formulations. Over the duration of storage, other quality parameters (e.g., firmness) were better retained in coated fruits compared to the uncoated (control) one. At the last storage day, the firmness of the uncoated sample was 0.67 N·mm−1 while the sodium and calcium caseinate was 0.63 and 0.81 N.mm−1, respectively. Moreover, the microbial growth was reduced in coated fruits, indicating the effectiveness of coatings in preserving fruit quality. The mold /yeast count was 1.4 and 2.3 log CFU/g for CaCa 75-1% SO and NaCa 75-1% SO compared with uncoated with 4.2 log CFU/g. Adding soybean oil to the caseinate–carboxymethyl chitosan composite edible coating has the potential to positively influence retention of various quality parameters of blueberries, thereby extending their shelf life and maintaining overall quality. Further research could explore the optimization of coating formulations and application methods to enhance their effectiveness in preserving fruit quality during storage. Full article

Electrochromic (EC) devices are gaining increasing attention for next-generation smart windows and low-power displays due to their reversible color modulation, low operating voltage, and flexible form factors. Recently, electrochromic energy storage devices (EESDs) have emerged as a promising class of multifunctional systems, enabling simultaneous energy storage and real-time visual monitoring. In this study, we report a flexible dual-functional EESD constructed using polyaniline (PANI) films doped with anthraquinone-1-sulfonic acid sodium salt (AQS), coupled with a redox-active PVA-based gel electrolyte also incorporating AQS. The incorporation of AQS into both the polymer matrix and the gel electrolyte introduces synergistic redox activity, facilitating bidirectional Faradaic reactions at the film–electrolyte interface and within the bulk gel phase. The resulting vertically aligned PANI-AQS nanoneedle films provide high surface area and efficient ion pathways, while the AQS-doped gel electrolyte contributes to enhanced ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability. The device exhibits rapid and reversible color switching from light green to deep black (within 2 s), along with a high areal capacitance of 194.2 mF·cm−2 at 1 mA·cm−2 and 72.1% capacitance retention over 5000 cycles—representing a 31.5% improvement over undoped systems. These results highlight the critical role of redox-functionalized gel electrolytes in enhancing both the energy storage and optical performance of EESDs, offering a scalable strategy for multifunctional, gel-based electrochemical systems in wearable and smart electronics. This research was designed to explore science-fiction and fantasy (SFF) posters, specifically those related to films and television shows, from the perspective of their owners, examining their potential as sources of social and cultural significance and meaning. The research explored these in terms of the content of the poster, placement, media texts they reference, morals, behavior, identity, sense of self, well-being and self-expression. Data collection took place between 2020 and 2022 via an online survey (N = 273) and follow-up semi-structured interviews (N = 28) with adult science-fiction and fantasy film and television show poster owners. The significance and meaning of SFF posters were framed by two conceptual models: ‘The Three Significances’—esthetics, functionality, and significance (both spatial and personal)—and ‘The Big Three’—content, design, and color. Among these, content held the greatest significance for owners. Posters served as tools for self-expression, reflecting their owners’ identities, affinities, and convictions, while also reinforcing their connection to the media they reference. Posters helped to reinforce a sense of self and fan identity and evoke emotional responses, and the space in which they were displayed helped shape their meaning and significance. The paper sets out some suggestions for future research in this important topic. Full article

Impact of Spectral Irradiance Control on Bioactive Compounds and Color Preservation in Solar-Dried Papaya

The quality effects of spectral irradiance conditions during papaya (Carica papaya L.) drying were investigated using three different dryers: a solar dryer with dynamic irradiance control (SDIC), a cylindrical solar dryer (CSD), and a solar simulator dryer (SSD). This study builds upon previous PDLC film applications in solar drying by specifically examining its impact on phytochemical preservation and color degradation, addressing gaps in spectral-specific effects on food quality parameters. The drying conditions were as follows: a temperature of 50 °C for each method, 700 w/m2 for both SDIC and solar simulator dryers (SSD), and full solar irradiance for the cylindrical solar dryer (CSD). The cylindrical solar dryer exhibited 210 min of drying time due to higher solar irradiance than SDIC (300 min), while SSD lasted 180 min. Drying rates were highest for CSD (0.056 g H2O/g d.m. min−1), followed by SDIC (0.027 g H2O/g d.m. min−1). Color analysis revealed that CSD resulted in the most significant color degradation, followed by SSD and SDIC. This was attributed to the varying spectral composition of radiation in each method. The CSD, with a full solar spectrum, including higher UV and visible radiation, induced more pronounced color changes than SDIC, which received lower intensity radiation in these ranges. Chemical analyses showed that SSD samples had the highest antioxidant activity (1432.91 µmol TE/g dw by ABTS) and phenolic content (58.92 mg GAE/100 g), suggesting simulated conditions may better preserve certain phytochemicals. SDIC maintained better carotenoid-related color parameters while showing intermediate antioxidant levels (1084.09 µmol TE/g dw). These results demonstrate that irradiance control significantly impacts drying efficiency and quality parameters. Full article

Structural Properties, Mechanical Behavior, and Food Protecting Ability of Chickpea Protein-Derived Biopolymer Films

This study aimed to enhance the characteristic properties of chickpea proteins enriched with quercetin by incorporating whey proteins. For this, whey proteins were supplemented into the film systems at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50% of the total protein content, and these formulations were labeled as CWF1, CWF2, CWF3, CWF4, and CWF5, in that order. Negative control (CF) was designed with chickpea protein alone. Essential amino acid content of chickpea protein (16.48%) was higher than that of whey protein (8.09%). FTIR spectra revealed protein–protein interactions occurred within film systems. Raising the whey protein content above 40% led to morphological issues in the films. Differences in moisture content, thickness, color, and opacity were obvious (p < 0.05). As the protein content boasted, a decrease in solubility and an increase in the swelling ratio of the films was detected (p < 0.05). CWF4 exhibited enhanced barriers and mechanical properties, followed by CWF3, CWF2, CWF1, CF, and CWF5 (p < 0.05). Moreover, in food simulators, quercetin release from films was monitored, and the highest release of quercetin occurred in 50% ethanol, followed by water and 95% ethanol. Ultimately, highly functional quercetin-loaded edible films, especially CWF4, stood out in protecting fresh strawberries. Full article

A Gelatin-Based Film with Acerola Pulp: Production, Characterization, and Application in the Stability of Meat Products

The objective of this work was to produce and characterize active gelatin–acerola packaging films based on gelatin incorporated with different concentrations of acerola pulp and applied to evaluate the stability of meat products in packaging. The active films were produced by casting using gelatin (5%), sorbitol (0,1%), and acerola pulp (60, 70, 80, and 90%). The characterization of the acerola pulp was carried out. Visual aspects, thickness, pH, water vapor permeability, and total phenolic compounds were characterized in the films. The commercial acerola pulp presented the characteristics within the identity and quality standards. A good film formation capacity was obtained in all formulations, presenting the color parameters tending to red coloration, characteristic of the acerola pulp. The total phenolic compounds content ranged from 2.88 ± 70.24 to 3.94 ± 96.05 mg GAE/100 g, with 90 g of acerola pulp per 100 g of filmogenic solution. This film formulation was selected to apply in a vacuum pack of beef and chicken samples, analyzing the weight loss, color parameters, pH, water holding capacity, shear strength after 9 days of refrigeration storage, and soil biodegradability. Additionally, beef and chicken (in nature) were stored under the same conditions without using the wrapping film. The beef and chicken samples showed greater water retention capacity and color maintenance over the storage period compared to the control (without film addition). This way, active gelatin–acerola films can be considered a sustainable packaging alternative to preserve meat products. Full article

Insight into the Mechanism for the Emergence of Thermally Stable Reflection Colors from Cholesteric Liquid Crystals of Etherified Ethyl Cellulose Derivatives and Methacrylic Acid

Ethyl cellulose (EC) and its derivatives are known to exhibit the cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) phase with visible light reflection in a lyotropic manner after adding appropriate solvents. Generally, the reflection peak of conventional CLCs is easily wavelength shifted by temperature. However, our previous study showed that the reflection wavelength can be maintained even after heating for the lyotropic CLCs of completely pentyl-etherified EC derivatives with methacrylic acid (MAA). However, the emergence of thermally stable reflection colors still remains obscure in the mechanism at the mesoscopic scale. In this study, we evaluated the temperature dependence of the reflection wavelength for the lyotropic CLCs of a series of completely etherified EC derivatives possessing different alkoxy chains by addition of MAA. It was found that butyl- or pentyl-etherified EC derivatives are suitable for preparation of the lyotropic CLCs with visible Bragg reflection, whereas visible light reflection cannot be observed for the other mixtures of propyl- and hexyl-etherified EC derivatives with MAA. Furthermore, it turned out that lyotropic CLCs of pentyl-etherified EC derivatives with MAA show the smallest temperature dependence of their reflection wavelength. Based on the results of ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements of CLC films, we presumed that the emergence of thermally stable reflection colors from the lyotropic CLCs of pentyl-etherified EC derivatives with MAA arises from their phase separation at the mesoscopic scale by changing the temperature.
