Background: Chlamydia trachomatis is the most prevalent bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) globally, linked to severe complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. In the Brazilian Amazon, socioeconomic vulnerability and the absence of screening policies exacerbate risks, particularly among female sex workers (FSWs). Objective: This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of anti-C. trachomatis IgG antibodies among FSWs in five municipalities of Pará State, Brazilian Amazon, and identify epidemiological factors associated with infection. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study (2005–2007) included 348 FSWs recruited via convenience sampling. Sociodemographic and behavioral data were collected through questionnaires, and blood samples were analyzed by ELISA for anti-C. trachomatis IgG. Statistical analyses included Fisher’s exact tests, odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), using SPSS 21.0. Results: Overall seroprevalence was 93.9% (327/348; 95% CI: 83.1–90%). Significant associations included a household income of 1–3 minimum wages (98.4%; p = 0.0002), sexual partners from the same region (98.8%; p = 0.0421), and age >42 years (96.3%). Most reported inconsistent condom use (43.7%), multiple monthly partners (54.6%), and illicit drug use (53.4%). Discussion: The extremely high seroprevalence reflects chronic C. trachomatis exposure, driven by socioeconomic deprivation and limited healthcare access. Comparisons with global data underscore the urgent need for screening policies, absent in Brazil for FSWs, and highlight the vulnerability of this population. Conclusions: The findings reveal an alarming burden of C. trachomatis exposure among Amazonian FSWs. Integrated strategies, including routine screening, sexual health education, and inclusion of FSWs in priority health programs, are critical to reduce transmission and associated complications. Background: Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a prevalent and potentially life-threatening condition caused by rapid exposure to high-altitude hypoxia, affecting pulmonary and neurological functions. Tongqiao Jiuxin Oil (TQ), a traditional Chinese medicine formula composed of aromatic and resinous ingredients such as sandalwood, agarwood, frankincense, borneol, and musk, has been widely used in the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders. Clinical observations suggest its potential efficacy against AMS, yet its pharmacological mechanisms remain poorly understood. Methods: The chemical profile of TQ was characterized using UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap HRMS. Network pharmacology was applied to predict the potential targets and pathways involved in AMS. A rat model of AMS was established by exposing animals to hypobaric hypoxia (~10% oxygen), simulating an altitude of approximately 5500 m. TQ was administered at varying doses. Physiological indices, oxidative stress markers (MDA, SOD, GSH), histopathological changes, and the expression of hypoxia- and apoptosis-related proteins (HIF-1α, VEGFA, EPO, Bax, Bcl-2, Caspase-3) in lung and brain tissues were assessed. Results: A total of 774 chemical constituents were identified from TQ. Network pharmacology predicted the involvement of multiple targets and pathways. TQ significantly improved arterial oxygenation and reduced histopathological damage in both lung and brain tissues. It enhanced antioxidant activity by elevating SOD and GSH levels and reducing MDA content. Mechanistically, TQ downregulated the expression of HIF-1α, VEGFA, EPO, and pro-apoptotic markers (Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, Caspase-3), while upregulated Bcl-2, the anti-apoptotic protein expression. Conclusions: TQ exerts protective effects against AMS-induced tissue injury by improving oxygen homeostasis, alleviating oxidative stress, and modulating hypoxia-related and apoptotic signaling pathways. This study provides pharmacological evidence supporting the potential of TQ as a promising candidate for AMS intervention, as well as the modern research method for multi-component traditional Chinese medicine. Background and Objectives: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) following pelvic osteotomy for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is technically challenging due to altered acetabular morphology. This study aimed to compare radiographic cup position and perioperative characteristics of THA after three common pelvic osteotomies—periacetabular osteotomy (PAO), shelf procedure, and Chiari osteotomy—with primary THA in Crowe type I DDH. Methods: A retrospective review identified 25 hips that underwent conversion THA after pelvic osteotomy (PAO = 12, shelf = 8, Chiari = 5) and 25 primary THAs without prior osteotomy. One-to-one matching was performed based on sex (exact match), age (within 5 years), and BMI (within 2 kg/m2) without the use of propensity scores. Cup inclination, radiographic anteversion, center-edge (CE) angle, and cup height were measured on standardized anteroposterior radiographs (ICC = 0.91). Operative time, estimated blood loss, and use of bulk bone grafts or reinforcement rings were reviewed. One-way ANOVA with Dunnett’s post hoc test and chi-square test were used for statistical comparison. Results: Cup inclination, anteversion, and CE angle did not differ significantly among groups. Cup height was significantly greater in the PAO group than in controls (29.0 mm vs. 21.8 mm; p = 0.0075), indicating a more proximal hip center. The Chiari and shelf groups showed upward trends, though not significant. Mean operative time tended to be longer after PAO (123 min vs. 93 min; p = 0.078). Bulk bone grafts and reinforcement rings were more frequently required in the PAO group (17%; p = 0.036 vs. control), and occasionally in Chiari cases, but not in shelf or control groups. Conclusions: THA after PAO is associated with higher cup placement and greater need for reconstructive devices, indicating increased technical complexity. In contrast, shelf and Chiari conversions more closely resemble primary THA. Preoperative planning should consider hip center translation and bone-stock restoration in post-osteotomy THA. Change point models are widely used in medical and epidemiological studies to capture the threshold effects of continuous covariates on health outcomes. These threshold effects represent critical points at which the relationship between biomarkers or risk factors and disease risk shifts, often reflecting underlying biological mechanisms or clinically relevant intervention points. While most existing methods focus on right-censored data, interval censoring is common in large-scale clinical trials and follow-up studies, where the exact event times are not observed but are known to fall within time intervals. In this paper, we propose a semiparametric transformation model with an unknown change point for interval-censored data. The model allows flexible transformation functions, including the proportional hazards and proportional odds models, and it accommodates both main effects and their interactions with the threshold variable. Model parameters are estimated via the EM algorithm, with the change point identified through a profile likelihood approach using grid search. We establish the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators and evaluate their finite-sample performance through extensive simulations, showing good accuracy and coverage properties. The method is further illustrated through an application to the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial data. Full article

The periodic vehicle routing problem (PVRP) is a well-known challenge in real-life logistics, requiring the planning of vehicle routes over multiple days while enforcing visitation frequency constraints. Although numerous metaheuristic and exact methods have tackled various PVRP extensions, real-world settings call for additional features such as depot configurations, tight visitation frequency constraints, and heterogeneous fleets. In this paper, we present a two-phase biased–randomized algorithm that addresses these complexities. In the first phase, a round-robin assignment quickly generates feasible and promising solutions, ensuring each customer’s frequency requirement is met across the multi-day horizon. The second phase refines these assignments via an iterative search procedure, improving route efficiency and reducing total operational costs. Extensive experimentation on standard PVRP benchmarks shows that our approach is able to generate solutions of comparable quality to established state-of-the-art algorithms in relatively low computational times and stands out in many instances, making it a practical choice for real life multi-day vehicle routing applications. Monitoring the health of wind turbine foundations is essential for ensuring their operational safety. This paper presents a cost-effective approach to obtain rotational stiffness of wind turbine foundations by using only acceleration and wind speed data that are part of SCADA data, thus lowering the use of moment and tilt sensors that are currently being used for obtaining foundation stiffness. First, a convolutional neural network model is applied to map acceleration and wind speed data within a moving window to corresponding moment and tilt values. Rotational stiffness of the foundation is then estimated by fitting a line in the moment-tilt plane. The results obtained indicate that such a mapping model can provide stiffness values that are within 7% of ground truth stiffness values on average. Second, the developed mapping model is re-trained by using synthetic acceleration and wind speed data that are generated by an autoencoder generative AI network. The results obtained indicate that although the exact amount of stiffness drop cannot be determined, the drops themselves can be detected. This mapping model can be used not only to lower the cost associated with obtaining foundation rotational stiffness but also to sound an alarm when a foundation starts deteriorating. Full article

The Kuroshio Current’s flow velocity imposes exacting requirements on underwater vehicle propulsive systems. Ecological preservation necessitates low-noise propeller designs to mitigate operational disturbances. As technological evolution advances toward greater intelligence and system integration, intelligent unmanned systems are positioning themselves as a critical frontier in marine innovation. In recent years, the global research community has increased its efforts towards the development of high-maneuverability underwater vehicles. However, propeller design optimization ignores the key balance between acoustic performance and hydrodynamic efficiency, as well as the appropriate speed threshold for blade rotation. In order to solve this problem, the propeller design of the NACA 65A010 airfoil is optimized by using OpenProp v3.3.4 and XFlow 2022 software, aiming at innovating the propulsion system of shallow water agile submersibles. The study presents an integrated design framework combining lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations synergized with fully Lagrangian-LES modeling, implementing rotational speed thresholds to detect cavitation inception, followed by advanced acoustic propagation analysis. Through rigorous comparative assessment of hydrodynamic metrics, we establish an optimization protocol for propeller selection tailored to littoral zone operational demands. Studies have shown that increasing the number of propeller blades can reduce the single-blade load and delay cavitation, but too many blades will aggravate the complexity of the flow field, resulting in reduced efficiency and noise rebound. It is concluded that the propeller with five blades, a diameter of 234 mm, and a speed of 500 RPM exhibits the best performance. Under these conditions, the water efficiency is 69.01%, and the noise is the lowest, which basically realizes the balance between hydrodynamic efficiency and acoustic performance. This paradigm-shifting research carries substantial implications for next-generation marine vehicles, particularly in optimizing operational stealth and energy efficiency through intelligent propulsion architecture. Introduction: Haglund’s deformity, characterized by bony enlargement at the back of the heel, often coincides with Achilles tendon pathology due to impingement on the retrocalcaneal bursa and tendon insertion. Surgical management of Haglund’s deformity with a preexisting Achilles tendon rupture is complex, and understanding the outcomes of this subset of patients is essential for optimizing treatment strategies. Methods: This retrospective study reviewed patients undergoing open surgical management for Haglund’s syndrome between January 2015 and December 2023. Patients with chronic degenerative changes secondary to Haglund’s deformity and a preoperative Achilles tendon rupture were compared to those without. Data on demographics, surgical techniques, weightbearing protocols, and complications were collected. Univariate analysis was performed using χ2 or Fisher’s exact test for categorical variables, and the T-test or Wilcoxon rank-sum test for continuous and ordinal variables, with normality assessed via the Shapiro–Wilk test. Results: Four hundred and three patients were included, with 13 having a preoperative Achilles tendon rupture. There was a higher incidence of preoperative ruptures among males. Surgical repair techniques and postoperative weightbearing protocols varied, though were not randomized. Complications included persistent pain, wound breakdown, infection, plantar flexion weakness, and revision surgery. While patients with Haglund’s deformity and a preoperative Achilles tendon rupture demonstrated a trend toward higher complication rates, including postoperative rupture and wound breakdown, these differences were not statistically significant in our analysis. Conclusions: A cautious approach is warranted in managing these patients, with careful consideration of surgical planning and postoperative rehabilitation. While our findings provide valuable insights into managing patients with Haglund’s deformity and preoperative Achilles tendon rupture, the retrospective design, limited sample size of the rupture group, and short duration of follow-up restrict generalizability and the strength of the conclusions by limiting the power of the analysis and underestimating the incidence of long-term complications. Therefore, the results of this study should be interpreted with caution. Further studies with larger patient cohorts, validated functional outcome measures, and comparable follow-up durations between groups are needed to confirm these results and optimize treatment approaches. The double wishbone suspension (DWS) system is widely used in automotive engineering because of its favorable kinematic properties, which affect vehicle dynamics, handling, and ride comfort; hence, it is important to have an accurate 3D model, simulation, and analysis of the system in order to optimize its design. This requires efficient computational tools for parametric study. The development of effective computational tools that support parametric exploration stands as an essential requirement. Our research demonstrates a complete Wolfram Mathematica system that creates parametric 3D kinematic models and conducts simulations, performs analyses, and generates interactive visualizations of DWS systems. The system uses homogeneous transformation matrices to establish the spatial relationships between components relative to a global coordinate system. The symbolic geometric parameters allow designers to perform flexible design exploration and the kinematic constraints create an algebraic equation system. The numerical solution function NSolve computes linkage positions from input data, which enables fast evaluation of different design parameters. The integrated 3D visualization module based on Mathematica’s manipulate function enables users to see immediate results of geometric configurations and parameter effects while calculating exact 3D coordinates. The resulting robust, systematic, and flexible computational environment integrates parametric 3D design, kinematic simulation, analysis, and dynamic visualization for DWS, serving as a valuable and efficient tool for engineers during the design, development, assessment, and optimization phases of these complex automotive systems. The white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) is a widely cultivated edible and medicinal mushroom, which contains various active substances, and has application value against pathogenic bacteria in aquaculture. Firstly, A. bisporus water extract (AB-WE) was prepared. Through the detection kits, it was found that the polysaccharide, protein, and polyphenol components of AB-WE were 9.11%, 3.3%, and 1.5%, respectively. The 246 compounds were identified in AB-WE, and the major small-molecule components included L-Isoleucine, L-Tyrosine, L-Valine, and Linoleic acid by HPLC-Q Exactive-Orbitrap-MS. Secondly, the AB-WE was evaluated for its immunological activities through dietary administration and pathogen challenge (Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio fluvialis) in goldfish (Carassius auratus). The results showed that the levels of immune factors of acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), and lysozyme (LZM) increased (p < 0.05) in goldfish, and the relative percentage survival of AB-WE against A. hydrophila and V. fluvialis were 80.00% (p < 0.05) and 81.82% (p < 0.05), respectively. The AB-WE reduced the bacterial content in renal tissue, enhanced the phagocytic activity of leukocytes, and exhibited antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects by reducing the expression of antioxidant-related factors and inflammatory factors. Through histopathological and immunofluorescence techniques, it was found that AB-WE maintained the integrity of visceral tissues and reduced renal tissue apoptosis and DNA damage. Therefore, AB-WE exhibits immunoprotective activity against A. hydrophila and V. fluvialis infections in fish, and holds promise as an immunotherapeutic agent against major pathogenic bacteria in aquaculture. The present paper proposes a three-dimensional (3D) spherical shell model for the magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) free vibration analysis of simply supported multilayered smart shells. A mixed curvilinear orthogonal reference system is used to write the unified 3D governing equations for cylinders, cylindrical panels and spherical shells. The closed-form solution of the problem is performed considering Navier harmonic forms in the in-plane directions and the exponential matrix method in the thickness direction. A layerwise approach is possible, considering the interlaminar continuity conditions for displacements, electric and magnetic potentials, transverse shear/normal stresses, transverse normal magnetic induction and transverse normal electric displacement. Some preliminary cases are proposed to validate the present 3D MEE free vibration model for several curvatures, materials, thickness values and vibration modes. Then, new benchmarks are proposed in order to discuss possible effects in multilayered MEE curved smart structures. In the new benchmarks, first, three circular frequencies for several half-wave number couples and for different thickness ratios are proposed. Thickness vibration modes are shown in terms of displacements, stresses, electric displacement and magnetic induction along the thickness direction. These new benchmarks are useful to understand the free vibration behavior of MEE curved smart structures, and they can be used as reference for researchers interested in the development of of 2D/3D MEE models. Background and Clinical SignificanceSarcina ventriculi is a rare Gram-positive coccus that thrives in acidic environments such as the human stomach. It has been increasingly identified in individuals with delayed gastric emptying and has been reported in association with various gastric disorders. However, its exact pathogenic role is not fully understood and remains controversial. Case Presentation: We present two cases of patients, one with a small bowel obstruction and the other with epigastric pain, both diagnosed with Sarcina ventriculi infection by histological examination of gastric biopsies. The patients were managed with a combination of antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor, resulting in symptom resolution and clearance of Sarcina ventriculi upon follow-up examinations. Conclusions: This report explores the pathogenicity of Sarcina ventriculi by documenting its presence in symptomatic patients without other identifiable pathogens and demonstrating complete symptom resolution following targeted therapy. These findings raise the possibility of Sarcina ventriculi’s pathogenic potential under specific clinical conditions, suggesting it may act as more than a benign colonizer. Full article

We study the shape of the Bachelier-implied volatility of a spread option on two assets following correlated local volatility models. This includes the limiting case of spread options on two correlated Black–Scholes (BS) assets. We give an analytical result for the at-the-money (ATM) skew of the spread-implied volatility, which depends only on the components’ ATM volatilities and skews. We also compute the ATM convexity of the implied spread option for the case when the assets follow correlated BS models. The results are extracted from the short-maturity asymptotics for basket options obtained previously by Avellaneda, Boyer-Olson, Busca and Friz and, thus, become exact in the short-maturity limit. Numerical testing of the short-maturity analytical results under the Black–Scholes model and in a local volatility model show good agreement for strikes sufficiently close to the ATM point. Numerical experiments suggest that a linear approximation for the spread Bachelier volatility constructed from the ATM spread volatility and skew gives a good approximation for the spread volatility for highly correlated assets. In this study, we focus on solving the nonlinear time-fractional Hirota–Satsuma coupled Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) and modified Korteweg–de Vries (MKdV) equations, using the Yang transform iterative method (YTIM). This method combines the Yang transform with a new iterative scheme to construct reliable and efficient solutions. Readers can understand the procedures clearly, since the implementation of Yang transform directly transforms fractional derivative sections into algebraic terms in the given problems. The new iterative scheme is applied to generate series solutions for the provided problems. The fractional derivatives are considered in the Caputo sense. To validate the proposed approach, two numerical examples are analysed and compared with exact solutions, as well as with the results obtained from the fractional reduced differential transform method (FRDTM) and the q-homotopy analysis transform method (q-HATM). The comparisons, presented through both tables and graphical illustrations, confirm the enhanced accuracy and reliability of the proposed method. Moreover, the effect of varying the fractional order is explored, demonstrating convergence of the solution as the order approaches an integer value. Importantly, the time-fractional Hirota–Satsuma coupled KdV and modified Korteweg–de Vries (MKdV) equations investigated in this work are not only of theoretical and computational interest but also possess significant implications for achieving global sustainability goals. Specifically, these equations contribute to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) “Life Below Water” by offering advanced modelling capabilities for understanding wave propagation and ocean dynamics, thus supporting marine ecosystem research and management. It is also relevant to SDG “Climate Action” as it aids in the simulation of environmental phenomena crucial to climate change analysis and mitigation. Additionally, the development and application of innovative mathematical modelling techniques align with “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure” promoting advanced computational tools for use in ocean engineering, environmental monitoring, and other infrastructure-related domains. Therefore, the proposed method not only advances mathematical and numerical analysis but also fosters interdisciplinary contributions toward sustainable development. Full article

Some Cretaceous ants belonging to the stem group of Formicidae exhibit bizarre morphology. This wide range of unusual adaptive features is primarily related to the mouthparts and clypeus. The researchers were perplexed by their specific ecology, as modern ant lineages do not exhibit anything similar. Here, we report and describe a new genus based on an extraordinary and mysterious alate ant from Late Eocene Baltic amber. Undoubtedly, the new ant is classified within the subfamily Formicinae (one of the crown groups), yet it displays a highly specialised morphology and an unusual array of features that are not observed in any extant ant lineages. Neither recent nor extinct ants have such a combination of features. While the exact phylogenetic placement of the new ant remains uncertain, we offer a discussion of its potential affinities based on our constrained phylogenetic analyses. We propose that †Eridanomyrma gen. n. should be considered in the new tribe †Eridanomyrmini trib. n. This new taxon highlights the adaptive diversity of a highly specialised, extinct lineage of Eocene crown-group ants. We also present a 3D model based on X-ray computed microtomography (µCT).
