Understanding the driving mechanisms of land-use structure change is fundamental for exploring co-evolutionary dynamics of coupled human-land systems. This study focuses on traditional villages in Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, integrating spatial analysis, landscape pattern indices, and structural equation modeling (SEM) with field surveys and multi-source data. It analyzes spatial distribution, spatiotemporal evolution, and the direct and indirect pathways of topographic heterogeneity, human activities, economic development, and social level on land-use structure change. Results show: (1) Villages concentrate in mountainous junctions at 800–1200 m (52.2%), forming a multi-core, west-dense east-sparse pattern with significant spatial dependence. (2) During 1990–2020, Dong villages exhibited a development-oriented evolution, with slightly expanded cultivated and forest land, intensified fragmentation (patch density increased by up to 8.55%), increased landscape diversity, and slightly decreased grassland and water, reflecting an adaptive balance between economic development and ecological constraints. (3) SEM reveals that topographic heterogeneity exerts significant negative direct effects on human activities (−0.694) and economic development (−0.686), and indirectly constrains social level through multiple mediating pathways; human activities (0.829) and economic development (0.837) strongly drive social level, with economic development also synergistically promoting human activities. This study reveals cascading transmission mechanisms of land-use structure change, providing an empirically grounded theoretical foundation and decision-making reference for ecological protection, cultural inheritance, and sustainable development in mountainous ethnic areas. Existing studies have mainly focused on either intangible cultural heritage (ICH) or traditional villages separately, while limited attention has been paid to their coupled spatial relationship and influencing mechanisms at the provincial scale. To address this gap, this study investigates the spatial characteristics and influencing factors of 869 national and provincial intangible cultural heritage (ICH) items and 777 traditional villages in Yunnan Province using Geographic Information Systems (GISs) and geographic detector methods. The results indicate significant differences in their spatial distribution patterns: ICH exhibits a “multi-core clustering” structure, whereas traditional villages present a “dual-core clustering with multiple dispersed patches” pattern. The study further reveals a spatial mismatch as well as a significant positive spatial correlation between ICH and traditional villages. Natural environmental conditions and historical-cultural factors jointly shape their spatial differentiation, while socio-economic factors such as urbanization exert a stronger influence on ICH distribution, and demographic and economic conditions more strongly affect traditional villages. This study contributes to the literature by integrating cultural landscape theory with GIS-based spatial analysis to reveal the spatial interaction mechanisms between ICH and traditional villages in Yunnan Province. The findings provide theoretical support and practical implications for cultural heritage conservation, rural revitalization, and territorial spatial planning in ethnically diverse border regions. To address the scattered protection efforts and uneven effectiveness of traditional villages in southwestern Hubei, this study focuses on 92 nationally recognized traditional villages in Enshi Prefecture. By integrating literature research, field investigation, and multi-source data fusion, we developed an innovative model that combines the Analytic Network Process (ANP), entropy weight, and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation, thereby integrating subjective and objective weighting to improve evaluation accuracy. A quantitative evaluation was conducted across 13 criteria and 32 indicators, including traffic conditions, intangible cultural heritage resources, and industrial foundation. The results reveal that traditional villages in Enshi Prefecture exhibit a significant spatial pattern of “overall dispersion with local concentration,” accompanied by a high concentration index. Traffic conditions, intangible cultural heritage, and infrastructure emerge as the core factors affecting protection effectiveness, and a spatial differentiation pattern of “two cores and one corridor” is identified within the region. Based on the quantitative evaluation, we propose targeted cluster protection strategies, including a “dual-core multi-node” transportation network, “three-industry linkage” industrial collaboration, and a living heritage approach that integrates cultural relics with intangible cultural heritage. These strategies were validated in pilot villages such as Yejiaoyuan Village, resulting in significant increases in village satisfaction and tourist volume. The findings provide methodological support and practical paradigms for the systematic protection and sustainable development of traditional villages in southwestern ethnic minority areas. Against the backdrop of rural revitalization, traditional ethnic minority villages in Guizhou face the dual challenges of conservation and development. Existing research has largely focused on macro-scale morphological descriptions, lacking an operational spatial classification method that can directly guide planning and management. To address this gap, this paper takes Fengxi Village in Dejiang County as a case study, integrates Conzenian urban morphology with the concept of “management units”, and proposes a spatial unit classification method for traditional villages based on the overlay analysis of “morphological region + building unit”. First, using Conzenian plan analysis, the study systematically deconstructs land use, road systems, plot combinations, and building types of Fengxi Village to delineate morphological regions. Second, it introduces three evaluation factors—building value, building quality, and building style—and, through quantitative assessment, classifies all 702 buildings in the village into five categories, protection units, repair and improvement units, comprehensive renovation units, demolition and renewal units, and new construction units, with the number and proportion of each category calculated. On this basis, differentiated control guidelines and development strategies are proposed for each unit category. The research shows that this method represents a preliminary attempt to translate “morphological description” into “operational control”, breaking down the relatively macro goal of “integral conservation” into concrete “unit-based control” actions, thereby providing a technical workflow that can be referenced for similar studies on the fine-grained planning and management of traditional villages. The main contribution of this paper is the construction of a systematic technical framework of “morphological analysis–factor evaluation–unit-based control”, and the demonstration of its application at the micro-operational level through the Fengxi Village case study, offering a meaningful complement to the existing research in terms of operationalization. In multi-ethnic villages, public space serves as more than just a venue for social interaction; it is the vital ground where cultural integration and community identity take root. This study examines Cizhong Village in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan, employing a mixed-methods approach that combines questionnaire surveys (N = 120), semi-structured interviews (N = 32), and Social Network Analysis (SNA) to compare the village’s planned spatial network with residents’ actual movement patterns. Findings reveal a significant structural mismatch: while the planned network exhibits higher density (0.32) and clustering (0.70), the behavioral network demonstrates a stronger small-world index (2.14 vs. 1.94), indicating that villagers organically form compact activity clusters around key social hubs such as the church and supermarket. QAP correlation analysis further shows that Tibetan and Naxi behavioral networks are highly similar (r = 0.833, p < 0.001), whereas Han networks exhibit weaker correlations (r = 0.527–0.607, p < 0.05), revealing a spatial pattern of “broad integration with localized ethnic preferences”. Grounded theory coding of interview data (55 initial concepts, 14 categories, 4 core categories) validates these structural findings and identifies the core theme of “superposed space of multi-ethnic dynamic sharing”. Based on these results, three optimization strategies are proposed: improving connectivity between public spaces, revitalizing key social hubs, and respecting established ethnic spatial traditions. These insights provide an evidence-based framework for managing public spaces in multi-ethnic rural communities. Full article

Background/Objectives: Estimate the prevalence of myopia among children aged 6–17 years in county and rural areas across seven geographically diverse provinces of China, and identify demographic, behavioral, and geographic factors associated with myopia, with particular focus on urban–rural and ethnic differences. Methods: A multi-stage stratified cluster sampling design was employed. Seven provinces were randomly selected, one from each of seven geographical regions of China (Southeast, North, Central, South, Southwest, Northwest, and Northeast). In each province, one rural county was randomly chosen. Within each county, one urban survey site (county town) and one rural survey site (village) were selected. From each site, one primary school and one junior high school were included. In each school, approximately 20 ± 2 students per grade (grades 1–9) were recruited. Uncorrected visual acuity and non-cycloplegic autorefraction were measured. Multivariable generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) with random intercepts at the class level were used to identify factors associated with myopia, accounting for the cluster sampling design. Results: The overall myopia prevalence was 42.9% (urban 49.6%, rural 36.0%). In the multivariable GLMM, educational stage was the strongest risk factor (grades 7–9 vs. 1–3: OR = 5.54). A significant district × ethnicity interaction was found only for Mongolian children: rural residence was strongly protective (OR = 0.19) compared to Han (OR = 0.65), and the ethnic advantage disappeared in county towns. Only 14.2% of myopic students had adequate correction. Conclusions: In conclusion, myopia is highly prevalent and severely under-corrected in rural China. Educational pressure is the main risk factor, and the rural protective effect is strongest in Mongolians but erodes with urbanization. Urgent public health actions, including vision screening, affordable spectacles, and lifestyle preservation, are needed to address this growing burden. Full article

Traditional villages in ecologically fragile and multi-ethnic frontier regions are increasingly threatened by rapid urbanization and socio-economic transformation. Northwestern Yunnan, located in the longitudinal valleys of the Hengduan Mountains, represents a key cultural landscape of plateau agropastoral civilization and ethnic interaction, yet its spatial organization and clustering mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. This study develops a four-dimensional analytical framework integrating four dimensions—spatial morphology (village distribution patterns and density), geomorphological conditions (elevation, slope, and terrain features), cultural attributes (ethnic composition and historical-cultural corridors), and architectural typologies (dominant residential structure types) to examine 246 officially recognized traditional villages. Using GIS-based spatial statistics, kernel density estimation (KDE), spatial autocorrelation, and a hierarchical overlay model, the study identifies the spatial structure (distribution patterns and density gradients), environmental adaptability (relationships with elevation, slope, and hydrological conditions), and multidimensional clustering characteristics (integrated clustering intensity across four analytical dimensions) of settlements. The results reveal a highly uneven and a statistically significant clustered spatial pattern (R = 0.606, Moran’s I = 0.251, p < 0.05) characterized by a “two corridors–six clusters–multiple nodes” structure. Settlement distribution demonstrates strong coupling with mid-elevation plateau basins, river valley systems, and trade-cultural corridors shaped by the Ancient Tea Horse Road. Multidimensional integration further classifies villages into three typologies—comprehensive, specialized, and general clusters—reflecting different levels of coordination among spatial, environmental, cultural, and architectural dimensions. These findings reveal the spatial regularities and multidimensional clustering characteristics of officially recognized traditional villages in Northwestern Yunnan, and suggest that environmental setting, historical corridors, and cultural-architectural features jointly shape the current recognized heritage landscape. The proposed framework provides a context-sensitive basis for differentiated heritage conservation and rural management in mountainous multi-ethnic regions. Full article

Developing regions rich in ethnic cultures face structural tensions between cultural heritage preservation, ecological conservation, and economic development. Yet existing research analyzes village types in isolation, overlooks non-additive factor interactions, and lacks frameworks connecting spatial heterogeneity to differentiated sustainability pathways. This study addresses these three gaps through integrated spatial analysis of 4083 characteristic villages across five nationally designated types in Southwest China, a region harboring over 40% of China’s Traditional Villages and high densities of Forest Villages, Key Tourism Villages, Ethnic Minority Characteristic Villages, and Historic and Cultural Villages. Kernel Density Estimation, Average Nearest Neighbor analysis, Standard Deviational Ellipse, and Geographical Detector methods are employed in a three-stage analytical progression. Spatial characterization reveals pronounced heterogeneity with “large-scale dispersion, small-scale agglomeration” patterns and systematic cross-type spatial co-location in high-heritage, high-vulnerability zones. Mechanism quantification shows that intangible cultural heritage (q-values 0.66–0.78) and GDP per capita (q-values 0.68–0.82) are dominant drivers whose pairwise interactions exceed individual effects by 40–60%. Sustainability classification translates q-value-weighted composite indices into four context zones across 506 counties, Culture-Ecology Tension Zones (22.7%), Economic Isolation Nodes (17.0%), Tourism-Driven Development Corridors (19.6%), and Balanced Development Potentials (40.7%), each exhibiting a distinct configuration of cultural, ecological, and economic conditions that necessitates differentiated pathways. The “culture-ecology-economy” tripartite framework advances sustainability science in three ways: it empirically identifies non-additive spatial interactions as generative mechanisms of heterogeneity, achieves a methodological progression from pattern description to sustainability diagnosis, and reconceptualizes cultural heritage from a development constraint into a measurable sustainability asset. The framework is transferable to analogous mountain regions globally where heritage-rich communities confront coupled ecological and economic vulnerabilities. Full article

In this article I analyse the period of social and political upheaval faced by mixed Greek Catholic and Roman Catholic families living in the Subcarpathian countryside in the 1930s and 1940s. Focusing on a vernacular perspective often overlooked in nation-centric historiographies, I describe the nature of neighbourly relations and collective identity both before and after World War II. I pay particular attention to the ambiguous connections between religious and ethnic identities before the war, highlighting phenomena such as bi-ritualism and diglossia. I then juxtapose this with the specific circumstances of 1944–1945, when villagers were frequently forced to choose their ethnic identity under the threat of Polish and Ukrainian nationalist guerrillas, especially active during that time. Building on a rich body of ethnographic material, I argue that choices of ethnic identity during a “state of exception” were often unstable and shaped primarily by the imperative of survival and other pragmatic considerations. However, I also present tragic stories of mixed families, where the ethnic choices made by some individuals were rooted in their deeply held convictions. Additionally, I reference scholars who are re-evaluating and complicating the relationship between nationalism and religious identity in rural European communities living in border areas, including Norman Davies, Kate Brown, Max Bergholz, and Jarosław Syrnyk. Ecological resettlement (ER), or conservation-led displacement, is widely implemented to safeguard biodiversity but often produces complex socio-ecological outcomes. This study assessed the environmental justice (both social and ecological) impacts of ER in Nepal’s Terai Arc Landscape (TAL) using an enhanced (including social, ecological, and environmental aspects) environmental justice (EJ) framework. Data were collected from 240 households across all resettled villages within the Chitwan and Parsa National Parks (NPs) of Nepal through household interviews, key informant interviews, focus groups, and field observations, supplemented by policy reviews, reports, and unpublished documents. Household demographics indicated an average family size of 5.5, gender parity (664 females, 658 males), and diverse caste/ethnic composition (ethnic: 146 households; higher caste: 64; lower caste: 6). Wealth distribution and literacy were uneven, with disparities in land ownership, assets, and social positions. Social and ecological justice outcomes were analysed using chi-square and McNemar tests. We observed a significant difference (p < 0.05) in substantive justice (food, shelter, clothing, and security) attributes before and after the resettlements. Similarly, significant improvements post-resettlement were observed in procedural and recognition justice: participation in decision-making increased from 43% to 62% (χ2 = 12.34, p < 0.05). However, recognition of Indigenous knowledge and FPIC rights remained low, with 93% of households reporting inadequate acknowledgment (χ2 = 198.5, p < 0.05). Distributive justice indicators, including access to compensation and forest resources, showed mixed outcomes, with 52% reporting fair compensation and 48% citing inequities (p < 0.05). Ecological outcomes also shifted significantly: forest cover decreased in 65% of surveyed areas post-resettlement, while grassland extent increased in 28% (χ2 = 27.4, p < 0.05). Water source accessibility declined for 48% of households (χ2 = 21.6, p < 0.05), and bushfire incidence decreased by 15% (χ2 = 9.8, p < 0.05). Composite scoring revealed strong linkages between social justice deficits and ecological downturn in the resettled areas, suggesting that inadequate participation, recognition, inequitable compensation, and ecological degradation shift the issues from parks to the outside and exacerbate environmental vulnerability. These findings demonstrate that ER can achieve partial ecological objectives inside the parks but often perpetuates social inequities and ecological downturn in the resettled areas, undermining the long-term sustainability of the socio-ecological landscape. The study highlights the critical need to integrate social justice, participatory governance, and ecological monitoring into resettlement planning. Future policies should be grounded in the understanding that conservation effectiveness and social equity are mutually reinforcing, and that ignoring justice dimensions risks undermining both biodiversity outcomes and human wellbeing. As a unique cultural heritage of Chinese ethnic minorities, Dong architecture provides rich historical and cultural information. Rapid and accurate extraction of ethnic building information from remote sensing images in complex terrain and high-density settlement environments is highly important for the protection of architectural heritage and the management of rural space. Huanggang Dong Village in Liping County, Guizhou Province, China, is taken as a case study. This paper develops a multifeature fusion machine learning framework for the automatic recognition of Dong ethnic architecture based on centimeter-level visible images captured by UAV. First, the vegetation index, HSI color features and texture features based on the gray level co-occurrence matrix are extracted from the UAV visible light orthophoto image. Through the random forest feature importance ranking and correlation test, six key features, namely, the VDVI, HSI-S, HSI-I, mean, variance and contrast, are selected to construct a multifeature space. This step constitutes the feature construction stage of the proposed methodology and provides the basis for subsequent classification. Second, on the basis of a support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF), classification models are constructed. The effects of different feature combinations and different algorithms on classification accuracy are systematically compared, and the results are evaluated in terms of overall accuracy (OA), the kappa coefficient, user accuracy (UA) and producer accuracy (PA). This second part highlights the classification phase of the methodology, which tests the feature space using different algorithms and evaluates the performance of the models. The experimental data fully show that under the condition of a single feature, the SVM model dominated by texture features performs best, with an OA of 85.33% and a kappa of 0.799; under the condition of multifeature fusion, the RF algorithm has a stronger ability to integrate multisource features. The accuracy of building category recognition based on the total feature and dimensionality reduction feature space is particularly prominent. The total feature and overall accuracy reach 89.00%, and the kappa coefficient is 0.850. The UA and PA reached 89.66% and 94.55%, respectively. Through in-depth comparative analysis, the vegetation index–color–texture multifeature fusion and machine learning classification framework based on UAV visible light images can achieve high-precision extraction of Dong architecture without relying on high-cost sensors. It can effectively alleviate the confusion between water bodies and shadows and between dark roofs and vegetation and effectively separate traditional Dong architecture from roads, vegetation and other elements. It provides a low-cost and feasible way for digital archiving, dynamic monitoring and protection management of the traditional village architectural heritage of ethnic minorities. Full article

Exploring the spatial patterns and associated mechanisms of Rural Tourism Demonstration Villages (RTDVs) and Potential Rural Tourism Villages (PRTVs) is crucial for rural tourism planning and regional coordination. This study focuses on the arid region of Northwest China. Based on national and provincial official directories, it selects villages listed under tourism-oriented categories as RTDVs, while designating other villages categorized for their ecological, cultural, and agricultural characteristics as PRTVs. Multiple geospatial analyses were conducted to identify spatial distribution characteristics and differences between RTDVs and PRTVs, while the optimal-parameter geographical detector model quantified the influences and interactions of natural, socioeconomic, locational, and cultural–tourism factors. Results show that rural tourism is concentrated in the Ili River Valley, the mid-Hexi Corridor, and the Urumqi–Turpan area. RTDVs follow this pattern but display stronger hierarchical differentiation. Cultural Potential Rural Tourism Villages (C-PRTVs) cluster in multi-ethnic areas. Ecological Potential Rural Tourism Villages (E-PRTVs) occur mainly in mountain oases, and agricultural Potential Rural Tourism Villages (A-PRTVs) agglomerate near provincial capitals and major transport corridors. Overall, influencing factors exhibit interactive enhancement, suggesting that spatial patterns are associated with multidimensional synergy. Cultural diversity holds an irreplaceable ecological value in biodiversity conservation. Jingxi is a county-level city in Baise City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. In Jingxi, where the Zhuang ethnic group accounts for 99.4% of the population, a symbiotic relationship has developed between its unique ethnic culture and ecological environment. According to the 2017 census of old trees (OTs) in Jingxi, a total of 1361 OTs were recorded, of which 63.3% (865 trees) were concentrated in human settlements, including village entrances or exits, and cultivated lands, demonstrating significant spatial differentiation. This distinctive distribution pattern raises two core research questions: (1) What are the spatial distribution patterns of OTs within human settlements? (2) Do cultural factors play a significant role in OTs conservation? Therefore, an ethnobotanical study of OTs in Jingxi is necessary. The objectives of this study are to: (1) conduct a comprehensive ethnobotanical investigation of the OTs among the Zhuang people in the region; (2) summarize the environmental spaces of OTs based on their geographical locations; (3) analyze the symbolic cultural meaning associated with OTs across different environmental spaces. This study also aims to reveal conservation strategies for OTs from a cultural perspective and to integrate cultural values into biodiversity conservation, thereby providing significant insights into the mechanisms underlying cultural–ecological synergy. The enclave villages of Lake Malawi National Park (LMNP) are human settlements within a World Natural Heritage landscape. While social heterogeneity has been widely discussed in social–ecological systems (SES) scholarship, ethnic diversity has often remained analytically implicit. This study makes ethnic diversity central to analysis by examining how it shapes livelihoods, resource use, and governance across enclave villages. Drawing on an integrated household survey, key informant interviews, and extended field observations, and informed by collaboration theory, the SES framework, and scholarship on social differentiation, the analysis shows that ethnic diversity facilitates exchanges of fishing techniques, farming skills, ecological knowledge, and market linkages, producing plural and seasonally adaptive livelihood portfolios. Households routinely combine fishing, agriculture, tourism, petty trade, and forest use, contributing to diversified resource use. However, pressures on fish stocks, forest resources, and agricultural land highlight the need for more inclusive co-management. Emerging community-based institutions and collaborative initiatives increasingly facilitate coordination, rule-making, and shared stewardship. Overall, the findings identify practical and conceptual entry points through which ethnic diversity, ecological knowledge, and adaptive livelihoods can jointly support more resilient and inclusive pathways for sustainability at the crossroads of resource-dependent livelihoods and conservation, offering insights for socially diverse human–nature landscapes. Traditional villages in Southwest China serve as vital carriers of ethnic culture, vernacular architecture, and ecological wisdom, embodying centuries of dynamic human–land interaction. This study explores the spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of traditional villages in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Chongqing by applying a human–land relationship theoretical framework. This study uses spatial analysis methods, including average nearest neighbor, spatial autocorrelation, and kernel density estimation, combined with geographic detectors. The research identifies spatial clustering patterns and reveals key natural, infrastructural, and socio-economic drivers. The results demonstrate that traditional villages exhibit a significantly clustered distribution, particularly in areas such as Qiandongnan, Lijiang, and Dali, where cultural heritage and tourism resources are abundant. Among the nine analyzed factors, river density, road density, and temperature show the strongest explanatory power, while the interaction between natural and socio-economic elements, such as altitude and urbanization, further enhances spatial influence. These findings reflect the complex interplay between geographical constraints, human adaptation, and modern tourism dynamics. By situating the spatial evolution of traditional villages within the broader process of rural tourism development, this study highlights the need for adaptive spatial planning and culturally sensitive infrastructure strategies. It provides theoretical and empirical support for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to promote sustainable development, spatial equity, and cultural continuity in the context of village revitalization.
