To prolong the service life of asphalt pavement and reduce its maintenance cost, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor encapsulated in carboxylated carbon nanotube (CNT-COOH)-modified gel material suitable for strain monitoring of asphalt pavement was developed. Through tensile and bending tests, the effects of carboxylated carbon nanotubes on the mechanical properties of gel materials under different dosages were evaluated and the optimal dosage of carbon nanotubes was determined. Infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscopy were used to compare and analyze the infrared spectra and microstructure of carbon nanotubes before and after carboxyl functionalization and modified gel materials. The results show that the incorporation of CNTs-COOH increased the tensile strength, elongation at break, and tensile modulus of the gel material by 36.2%, 47%, and 17.2%, respectively, and increased the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and flexural strain by 89.7%, 7.5%, and 63.8%, respectively. Through infrared spectrum analysis, it was determined that carboxyl (COOH) and hydroxyl (OH) were successfully introduced on the surface of carbon nanotubes. By analyzing the microstructure, it can be seen that the carboxyl functionalization of CNTs improved the agglomeration of carbon nanotubes. The tensile section of the modified gel material is rougher than that of the pure epoxy resin, showing obvious plastic deformation, and the toughness is improved. According to the data from the calibration experiment, the strain and temperature sensitivity coefficients of the packaged sensor are 1.9864 pm/μm and 0.0383 nm/°C, respectively, which are 1.63 times and 3.61 times higher than those of the bare fiber grating. The results of an applicability study show that the internal structure strain of asphalt rutting specimen changed linearly with the external static load, and the fitting sensitivity is 0.0286 με/N. Combined with ANSYS finite element analysis, it is verified that the simulation analysis results are close to the measured data, which verifies the effectiveness and monitoring accuracy of the sensor. The dynamic load test results reflect the internal strain change trend of asphalt mixture under external rutting load, confirming that the encapsulated FBG sensor is suitable for the long-term monitoring of asphalt pavement strain. Currently, numerous conventional airport runways suffer from cracking distresses and cannot meet their structural and functional requirements. To address the urgent demand for rapid and durable maintenance of airport runways, this study investigates the material optimization and curing behavior of cold-mix epoxy asphalt (CEA) for non-disruptive overlays. Eight commercial CEAs were examined through tensile and overlay tests to evaluate their strength, toughness, and reflective cracking resistance. Two high-performing formulations (CEA 1 and CEA 8) were selected for further curing characterization using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests, and the non-isothermal curing kinetics were analyzed with different contents of Component C. The results reveal that CEA 1 and CEA 8 were selected as promising formulations with superior toughness and reflective cracking resistance across a wide temperature range. DSC-based curing kinetic analysis shows that the curing reactions follow an autocatalytic mechanism, and activation energy decreases with conversion, confirming a self-accelerating process of CEA. The addition of Component C effectively modified the curing behavior, and CEA 8 with 30% Component C reduced curing time by 60%, enabling traffic reopening within half a day. The curing times were accurately predicted for each type of CEA using curing kinetic models based on autocatalytic and iso-conversional approaches. These findings will provide theoretical and practical guidance for high-performance airport runway overlays, supporting rapid repair, extended service life, and environmental sustainability. Asphalt pavement cracking is an important factor affecting its service life. Under certain conditions, the self-healing behavior of asphalt itself can repair pavement cracks. However, the self-healing ability of asphalt itself is limited. In order to strengthen the self-healing ability of asphalt, the microcapsule wrapped with a repair agent is pre-mixed into the asphalt mixture. When the crack occurs and spreads to the surface of the microcapsule, the microcapsule ruptures and the healing agent flows out to realize the self-healing of the crack. Current microcapsules are mostly prepared with healing agents and bio-oil as core materials, and their high-temperature resistance to rutting is poor. While the epoxy resin contains a three-membered cyclic ether, it can undergo ring-opening polymerization to bond and repair the asphalt matrix. In addition, research on microcapsules mainly focuses on the self-healing properties of microcapsule-modified asphalt. In fact, before adding microcapsules to asphalt to improve its self-healing performance, it is necessary to ensure that the asphalt has a good road performance. On this basis, the self-healing performance of asphalt is improved, thereby extending the service life of asphalt pavement. Therefore, two-component epoxy self-healing microcapsules (E-mic and G-mic) were first prepared in this paper. Then, a temperature scanning test, rheological test of bending beams, and linear amplitude scanning test were, respectively, conducted for the microcapsule/asphalt to evaluate its road performance, including the high-temperature performance, low-temperature crack resistance, and fatigue performance. Finally, the self-healing performance of microcapsules/asphalt was tested. The results showed that the self-developed epoxy self-healing microcapsules were well encapsulated and presented as spherical micron-sized particles. The average particle size of the E-mic was approximately 23.582 μm, while the average particle size of the G-mic was approximately 22.440 μm, exhibiting a good normal distribution. In addition, they can remain intact and unbroken under high-temperature conditions. The results of road performance tests indicated that the microcapsule/asphalt mixture exhibits an excellent high-temperature resistance to permanent deformation, low-temperature crack resistance, and fatigue resistance. The self-healing test demonstrated that the microcapsule/asphalt exhibited an excellent self-healing performance. When the microcapsule content was 4%, the self-healing rate reached its optimal level of 67.8%, which was 149.2% higher than that of the base asphalt. Full article

To obtain waterborne polymer-modified emulsified asphalt materials with better comprehensive performance, waterborne polymer modifiers including waterborne epoxy resin (WER)-reinforced styrene–butadiene–styrene block copolymer (SBS), waterborne acrylate (WA) or styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) emulsion were prepared. The mechanical strength, toughness, adhesion and impact resistance of these waterborne polymers were evaluated. Furthermore, the correlation between the performance indicators of the waterborne polymers was analyzed. Based on Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, the mechanism of WER-modified SBS and WA was characterized. The results show that adding 10%–15% WER can significantly improve the mechanical properties of the waterborne polymer. The performances of modified SBS and WA are better than that of modified SBR. When the content of WER is 10%, the tensile strength, elongation at break and pull-off strength of WER-modified SBS and WA are 4.80–6.38 MPa, 476.3%–579.6% and 1.62–1.70 MPa, respectively. The mechanical strength and breaking energy of the waterborne polymers show a significant linear correlation with their application properties such as adhesion, bonding and impact resistance. FTIR and TG analyses indicate that WER-modified SBS or WA prepared via emulsion blending undergo primarily physical modifications, enhancing thermal stability while promoting crosslinking and curing. Epoxy Resin System (ERS) steel bridge pavement, which comprises a resin asphalt (RA) base layer and a modified asphalt wearing course, offers cost efficiency and rapid installation. However, the combined effects of traffic loads and environmental conditions pose significant challenges, requiring greater high-temperature stability than conventional pavements. The thermal sensitivity of resin materials and the use of conventional asphalt mixtures may weaken deformation resistance under elevated temperature conditions. This study investigates the thermal field distribution and high-temperature performance of ERS pavements under extreme conditions and explores temperature reduction strategies. A three-dimensional thermal field model developed using finite element analysis software analyzes interactions between the steel box girder and pavement layers. Based on simulation results, wheel tracking and dynamic creep tests confirm the superior performance of the RA05 mixture, with dynamic stability reaching 23,318 cycles/mm at 70 °C and a 2.1-fold improvement in rutting resistance in Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA)-13 + RA05 composites. Model-driven optimization identifies that enhancing internal airflow within the steel box girder is possible without compromising its structural integrity. The cooling effect is particularly significant when the internal airflow aligns with ambient wind speeds (open-girder configuration). Surface peak temperatures can be reduced by up to 20 °C and high-temperature durations can be shortened by 3–7 h. Full article

To address the challenge of assessing the thickness uniformity of epoxy asphalt layers on steel bridge decks, three-dimensional ground-penetrating radar (3D-GPR) was employed for non-destructive, full cross-sectional detection of the pavement layer’s thickness. The antenna array spacing was optimized using the common midpoint (CMP) method, enabling precise measurement of the relative permittivity of epoxy asphalt mixtures. A significant correlation between relative permittivity and the void ratio was established, providing a novel approach to identifying areas prone to coarse segregation and early-stage water damage. Grayscale maps of the thickness distribution enabled precise detection of regions with acceptable, under-thickness and over-thickness values. The uniformity of construction thickness was quantitatively evaluated using standard deviations and coefficients of variation. Results indicated that when the coefficient exceeds 12%, improvements in the pavement construction process are necessary. This research demonstrates the capability of 3D-GPR to effectively detect thickness variations, offering a valuable tool for enhancing pavement paving and compaction practices on steel bridge decks. To address the deficiencies of traditional emulsified asphalt-pavement maintenance material in cohesive strength, high-temperature rutting resistance, as well as adhesion to aggregates, this study developed waterborne epoxy resin-modified emulsified asphalt (WEA) binders using a two-component waterborne epoxy resin (WER) and systematically investigated their modification mechanisms and pavement performance. The results indicated that WER emulsions and curing agents could polymerize to form epoxy resin within the emulsified asphalt dispersion medium, with the modification process dominated by physical interactions. When the WER content exceeded 12%, a continuous modifier network structure was established within the emulsified asphalt. The epoxy resin formed after curing could significantly increase the polarity component of the binder, thereby increasing the surface free energy. The linear viscoelastic range of the WEA binder exhibited a negative correlation with the dosage of the WER modifier. Notably, when the WER content exceeded 6%, the high-temperature stability (rutting resistance and elastic recovery performance) of the binder was significantly enhanced. Concurrently, stress sensitivity and frequency dependence gradually decrease, demonstrating superior thermomechanical stability. Furthermore, WER significantly enhanced the interfacial interaction and adhesion between the binder and aggregates. However, the incorporation of WER adversely affects the low-temperature cracking resistance of the binder, necessitating strict control over its dosage in practical applications. Full article

Highway service area pavements are exposed to severe conditions such as heavy traffic, oil infiltration, and temperature fluctuations, which lead to issues like rutting and cracking in conventional asphalt mixtures. Although warm mix epoxy asphalt mixtures have high strength and corrosion resistance, their high epoxy content and stringent construction requirements limit their engineering applications. To address these challenges, a design and construction method for warm mix epoxy asphalt mixtures with low epoxy content (≤20%) was proposed. The mineral aggregate gradation was optimized using the CAVF volumetric method, and the impact of different epoxy asphalt-aggregate ratios was analyzed through various performance tests, including Marshall stability, high-temperature stability, low-temperature bending, and oil resistance tests. The construction available time was determined using viscosity tests, and process parameters were optimized based on infrared thermography and real-time compaction monitoring. The results show that a 5.4% epoxy asphalt-aggregate ratio yields the best overall performance, with significantly better dynamic stability, tensile strain, and oil resistance compared to SBS-modified asphalt mixtures. The recommended construction parameters, including temperature control and compaction process, ensure optimal performance and durability. The proposed methods provide essential technical support for the effective application of warm mix epoxy asphalt in service area pavements. Full article

Conventional micro-surfacing materials often delaminate, crack, or peel. These defects shorten pavement life. High-performance polymer-modified mixtures are essential for rapid pavement maintenance. We added waterborne epoxy resin (WER) at different dosages to styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) to create a composite-modified micro-surfacing mixture. A series of laboratory comparative tests were conducted to investigate the effect of WER content on the overall performance of the WER-SBR micro-surfacing mixture. In addition, the microstructure of the mixtures was observed to analyze the mechanism by which the composite-modified emulsified asphalt enhances material performance, and the optimal WER dosage was determined. The results showed that higher WER content improved abrasion and rutting resistance but gains plateaued above 6% WER. Below 9% WER, mixtures showed good water stability; at 3–6% WER, they also maintained skid and low-temperature crack resistance. Notably, when the WER content was approximately 6%, the WER-SBR micro-surfacing mixture showed significantly reduced abrasion damage after exposure to freeze–thaw cycles, moisture, and salt spray conditions. SEM images confirmed that 6% WER creates a uniform asphalt film over aggregates, boosting mixture performance. Therefore, we recommend 6% WER. This study has developed a WER-SBR composite-modified emulsified asphalt micro-surfacing product with excellent overall performance. It holds significant practical value for extending pavement service life and improving road service quality. Full article

High Friction Surface Treatments (HFSTs) are frequently used to increase skid resistance and reduce collisions, particularly in crash-prone zones, including horizontal curves and intersections. Epoxy-based binders traditionally have been the sole option for HFSTs, but their drawbacks, such as high costs and compatibility challenges, have led to the search for substitute binders, including asphalt-based options. This study investigates the comparative performance of highly modified asphalt-based binders, including polymer-modified, mastic, and highly modified emulsions, in HFST applications using two aggregate types, Calcined Bauxite (CB) and Rhyolite with different gradations, with an emphasis on their frictional properties, durability, and resistance to polishing. Laboratory evaluations, including the Pendulum Tester (BPT), Dynamic Friction Testing Equipment (DFT), Surface Texture Measurement Apparatus (CTM), and Binder Bond Strength Test (BBS), were carried out to examine the Coefficient of Friction (COF), Mean Profile Depth (MPD), and aggregate bonding and retention. In terms of durability and friction, this study indicated that highly modified asphalt-based binders performed better than PG binders and conventional emulsions. The highest BPT values, both prior to and following polishing, were consistently observed for CB, with the emulsion containing the highest reactive polymer modifier showing the smallest decrease in BPT value (12.86% for CB and 10.34% for Rhyolite). Epoxy showed a greater COF retention over lengthy polishing cycles; however, highly polymer-modified (PM) binders like PG82-22 (PM) performed better than Epoxy under specific conditions. The macrotexture analysis revealed that Epoxy-based samples retained surface texture for further polishing cycles, while Mastic2 and PG82-22 (PM) also showed strong MPD retention. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing aggregate–binder combinations to ensure durable and effective HFST applications. Full article

Semi-flexible pavement (SFP) mixture consists of porous matrix asphalt mixture and cement-based grouting material. This composite material gains advantages from both the rigid cementitious material and flexible asphalt mixture. It exhibits excellent anti-rutting capability while no joints are needed. However, SFP is prone to cracks in the field. This study employs water-based epoxy resin and emulsified asphalt as polymer additives to modify the grouting material. A response surface methodology (RSM) model was employed for multi-factor and multi-response optimization design. The ratio of water-based epoxy resin to emulsified asphalt (w/e ratio), polymer content, defoamer content, and mixing speed were considered in the model. Fluidity, compressive strength, and fracture energy were selected as response indicators. It was found that a low mixing speed was not able to produce grouting slurry with acceptable fluidity. The addition of higher polymer contents would lower the compressive strength of the grouting material due to the low stiffness of the polymer and entrained air produced during mixing. The addition of defoamer eliminated the bubbles and, therefore, increased the strength and fracture energy of the samples. By solving for the optimal model solution, the values of optimized parameters were determined to be a w/e ratio of 0.64, polymer content of 3.3%, defoamer content of 0.2%, and mixing speed of 2000 rpm. Microstructural analysis further confirmed that the synergistic effect of water-based epoxy resin and emulsified asphalt can effectively make the microstructure of the hardened samples denser. The anti-cracking ability of the SFP mixture can be increased by 22% using optimally designed grouting material. The findings in this study shed light on the design of toughness-reinforced SFP materials. Full article

Study on the Road Performance of Terminal Carboxylated Nitrile Rubber-Modified Epoxy Asphalt Permeable Concrete

In cold regions, the overlay effect often leads to pavement and subgrade distresses, severely compromising the functionality of roads and infrastructure. To address this issue, this study proposes a solution involving permeable pavements and roadbed structures. However, the application of permeable pavement materials in cold regions remains a significant challenge. Building on previous research, this paper introduces a novel pavement material with exceptional mechanical and temperature performance: terminal carboxylated nitrile rubber-modified epoxy asphalt. Specifically, the mechanical properties, viscosity, high-temperature rutting resistance, low-temperature cracking resistance, and modification mechanisms of five terminal carboxylated nitrile rubber-modified epoxy asphalt mixtures with varying terminal carboxylated nitrile rubber contents were investigated. Additionally, the high-temperature, low-temperature, and water stability properties of three types of porous asphalt concrete were compared. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of terminal carboxylated nitrile rubber significantly enhances the mechanical properties and low-temperature cracking resistance of the asphalt without altering the curing time. Although the high-temperature rutting resistance of the asphalt itself decreases, the high-temperature, low-temperature, and water stability properties of the porous asphalt concrete are improved. This improvement is attributed to the chemical reaction between terminal carboxylated nitrile rubber and epoxy resin, which generates a prepolymer containing new substances and forms a stable sea–island structure. This structure promotes a more homogeneous distribution of the asphalt matrix, thereby increasing the cohesive strength and toughness of the asphalt. Full article

As a polymer-like organic material, asphalt often undergoes aging during service life. Regeneration technology is the main approach to achieve its recycling; therefore, the rejuvenator is an important factor affecting the regeneration effect. In order to evaluate the rejuvenation effects of rejuvenators on aged asphalt, fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) slurry and a penetrant containing epoxy functional groups were used to prepare conventional rejuvenators (CR1 and CR2) and a penetrable rejuvenator (PR). The impact of the penetrant on the physical properties of the rejuvenator was investigated, and the rejuvenation effects of different rejuvenators on mild and severe aged asphalt were evaluated through physical and rheological tests. Results show that the penetrant effectively lubricates the movement of rejuvenator molecules, improving the high temperature stability and aging resistance of the rejuvenator. CR1 and CR2 are more suitable for mild aged asphalt, as mild aging has a relatively minimal effect on the chemical composition and colloidal structure of asphalt. At a 25% dosage, the PR significantly restores the physical properties of severe aged asphalt, while CR1 and CR2 still fail to meet specifications. The PR is more effective for severe aged asphalt because it not only dissolves and disperses asphaltenes but also weakens interactions between asphaltenes, which facilitates a more effective restoration of the colloidal structure and significantly enhances the rejuvenation effect. The findings of this study provide insights into the design of penetrable rejuvenators for a more efficient utilization of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Full article

Epoxy asphalt, as a thermosetting and thermoplastic polymer composite material, has been widely used for steel bridge decks and specialty pavements due to its road performance, thermal stability, rutting resistance, and durability. However, the poor compatibility between epoxy resin binder and asphalt, due to the difference in chemical structure, polarity, and solubleness, severely restricts their practical applications in the construction of bridges and roads. Herein, we proposed a facial method to strengthen their compatibility by blending the poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene)-modified carbon nanotubes (SBS-CNTs) in the composite. The SBS-CNTs were found to evenly disperse in epoxy asphalt matrix with the epoxy resin contents of 10%–30% and could form the three-dimensional bi-continuous cross-linked structure at 30%. Moreover, the addition of epoxy resin increased the glass transition temperature (Tg) and enhanced the high-temperature shear capacity and tensile strength (over an order of magnitudes) of SBS-CNT-modified asphalt, which showed high potential for applications in the construction of bridges and roads, providing an alternative approach for improving the performance of epoxy asphalt. Comprehensive Performance Evaluation of Epoxy Reclaimed Asphalt and Mixtures

In order to improve the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) dosing and the road performance of recycled asphalt mixtures, this study prepared epoxy recycled binder (ERB) and epoxy recycled mixtures (ERMs) by dosing epoxy asphalt, respectively. The rheological characteristics and microstructure of ERB were comprehensively analyzed using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), a bending beam rheometer (BBR), and fluorescence microscopy (FM). The road performance of ERM was evaluated by a four-point bending test, a rutting test, trabecular beam bending test, a freeze–thaw splitting test, an immersion Marshall test, and a uniaxial compression dynamic modulus test. Grey relational analysis (GRA) was used to quantify the correlation between the dosage of epoxy system and road performance indicators. The results show that, after the addition of the epoxy system, the high- and low-temperature rheological properties of ERB were improved by 458.3% and 97.9% compared with those of ordinary asphalt, and the high-temperature performance and fatigue performance of ERM were improved by 220.4% and 80.5% compared with SBS-modified asphalt mixtures. The dynamic modulus test showed that the dynamic modulus of ERM was positively correlated with the dosage of epoxy system. GRA showed that the dosage of epoxy system was most closely related to the fatigue performance of recycled mixtures. Full article
