Aiming to enable intelligent vehicles to achieve autonomous charging under low-battery conditions, this paper presents a navigation system for autonomous charging that integrates an improved bidirectional A* algorithm for path planning and an optimized YOLOv11n model for visual recognition. The system utilizes the improved bidirectional A* algorithm to generate collision-free paths from the starting point to the charging area, dynamically adjusting the heuristic function by combining node–target distance and search iterations to optimize bidirectional search weights, pruning expanded nodes via a greedy strategy and smoothing paths into cubic Bézier curves for practical vehicle motion. For precise localization of charging areas and piles, the YOLOv11n model is enhanced with a CAFMFusion mechanism to bridge semantic gaps between shallow and deep features, enabling effective local–global feature fusion and improving detection accuracy. Experimental evaluations in long corridors and complex indoor environments showed that the improved bidirectional A* algorithm outperforms the traditional improved A* algorithm in all metrics, particularly in that it reduces computation time significantly while maintaining robustness in symmetric/non-symmetric and dynamic/non-dynamic scenarios. The optimized YOLOv11n model achieves state-of-the-art precision (P) and mAP@0.5 compared to YOLOv5, YOLOv8n, and the baseline model, with a minor 0.9% recall (R) deficit compared to YOLOv5 but more balanced overall performance and superior capability for small-object detection. By fusing the two improved modules, the proposed system successfully realizes autonomous charging navigation, providing an efficient solution for energy management in intelligent vehicles in real-world environments. Accurate assessment of urban rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) potential is critical for the low-carbon energy transition. This study presents a deep learning-based approach using high-resolution (0.5 m) aerial imagery to automatically identify building rooftops in the central urban area of Wuhan, China (covering seven districts), and to estimate their PV installation potential. Two state-of-the-art semantic segmentation models (DeepLabv3+ and U-Net) were trained and evaluated on a local rooftop dataset; U-Net with a ResNet50 backbone achieved the best performance with an overall segmentation accuracy of ~94%. Using this optimized model, we extracted approximately 130 km2 of suitable rooftop area, which could support an estimated 18.18 GW of PV capacity. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of deep learning for city-scale rooftop mapping and provide a data-driven basis for strategic planning of distributed PV installations to support carbon neutrality goals. The proposed framework can be generalized to facilitate large-scale solar energy assessments in other cities. Full article

In this study, we introduce a novel interdisciplinary framework that applies concepts from statistical physics, specifically lattice-gas models, to the classical order lot-sizing problem in supply chain management. Traditional methods often rely on heuristic or deterministic approaches, which may fail to capture the inherently probabilistic and dynamic nature of decision-making across multiple periods. Drawing on structural parallels between inventory decisions and adsorption phenomena in physical systems, we constructed a mapping that represented order placements as particles on a lattice, governed by an energy function analogous to thermodynamic potentials. This formulation allowed us to employ analytical tools from statistical mechanics to identify optimal ordering strategies via the minimization of a free energy functional. Our approach not only sheds new light on the structural characteristics of optimal planning but also introduces the concept of configurational entropy as a measure of decision variability and robustness. Numerical simulations and analytical approximations demonstrate the efficacy of the lattice gas model in capturing key features of the problem and suggest promising avenues for extending the framework to more complex settings, including multi-item systems and time-varying demand. This work represents a significant step toward bridging physical sciences with supply chain optimization, offering a robust theoretical foundation for both future research and practical applications. Energy storage plays an essential role in stabilizing fluctuations in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, enabling surplus electricity retention, and delivering dynamic frequency regulation. However, relying solely on a single form of storage often proves insufficient due to constraints in performance, capacity, and cost-effectiveness. To tackle frequency regulation challenges in remote desert-based renewable energy hubs—where traditional power infrastructure is unavailable—this study introduces a planning framework for an electro-hydrogen energy storage system with grid-forming capabilities, designed to supply both inertia and frequency response. At the system design stage, a direct current (DC) transmission network is modeled, integrating battery and hydrogen storage technologies. Using this configuration, the capacity settings for both grid-forming batteries and hydrogen units are optimized. This study then explores how hydrogen systems—comprising electrolyzers, storage tanks, and fuel cells—and grid-forming batteries contribute to inertial support. Virtual inertia models are established for each technology, enabling precise estimation of the total synthetic inertia provided. At the operational level, this study addresses stability concerns stemming from renewable generation variability by introducing three security indices. A joint optimization is performed for virtual inertia constants, which define the virtual inertia provided by energy storage systems to assist in frequency regulation, and primary frequency response parameters within the proposed storage scheme are optimized in this model. This enhances the frequency modulation potential of both systems and confirms the robustness of the proposed approach. Lastly, a real-world case study involving a 13 GW renewable energy base in Northwest China, connected via a ±10 GW HVDC export corridor, demonstrates the practical effectiveness of the optimization strategy and system configuration. This study presents the design and development of a structurally optimized mobile robotic system with a machine learning-based energy-efficient path planning framework. Topology optimization (TO) and finite element analysis (FEA) were applied to reduce structural weight while maintaining mechanical integrity. The optimized components were manufactured using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) with ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) material. A custom power analysis tool was developed to compare energy consumption between the optimized and initial designs. Real-world current consumption data were collected under various terrain conditions, including inclined surfaces, vibration-inducing obstacles, gravel, and direction-altering barriers. Based on this dataset, a path planning model was developed using machine learning algorithms, capable of simultaneously optimizing both energy efficiency and path length to reach a predefined target. Unlike prior works that focus separately on structural optimization or learning-based navigation, this study integrates both domains within a single real-world robotic platform. Performance evaluations demonstrated superior results compared to traditional planning methods, which typically optimize distance or energy independently and lack real-time consumption feedback. The proposed framework reduces total energy consumption by 5.8%, cuts prototyping time by 56%, and extends mission duration by ~20%, highlighting the benefits of jointly applying TO and ML for sustainable and energy-aware robotic design. This integrated approach addresses a critical gap in the literature by demonstrating that mechanical light-weighting and intelligent path planning can be co-optimized in a deployable robotic system using empirical energy data. This paper proposes a speed-adaptive autonomous driving path-tracking framework based on the soft actor–critic (SAC) and pure pursuit (PP) methods, named the SACPP controller. The framework first analyzes the obstacles around the vehicle and plans an obstacle-free reference path with the minimum curvature using the hybrid A* algorithm. Next, based on the generated reference path, the current state of the vehicle, and the vehicle motor energy efficiency diagram, the optimal speed is calculated in real time, and the vehicle dynamics preview point at the future moment—specifically, the look-ahead distance—is predicted. This process relies on the learning of the SAC network structure. Finally, PP is used to generate the front wheel angle control value by combining the current speed and the predicted preview point. In the second layer, we carefully designed the evaluation function in the tracking process based on the uncertainties and performance requirements that may occur during vehicle driving. This design ensures that the autonomous vehicle can not only quickly and accurately track the path, but also effectively avoid surrounding obstacles, while keeping the motor running in the high-efficiency range, thereby reducing energy loss. In addition, since the entire framework uses a lightweight network structure and a geometry-based method to generate the front wheel angle, the computational load is significantly reduced, and computing resources are saved. The actual running results on the i7 CPU show that the control cycle of the control framework exceeds 100 Hz. Full article

Integrating variable renewable energy sources such as solar power into existing power grids presents major planning and reliability challenges. This study introduces an approach to optimize the placement of solar plants and allocation of storage in grids with high share of these variable energy sources by using a simulation framework that captures system-wide emergent behaviors. Unlike traditional engineering models focused on detailed component-level dynamics, a modified ORNL-PSERC-Alaska model based on self-organized criticality is used to reproduce the statistical features of blackouts, including cascading failures and long-range correlations. A distinctive feature of this approach is the explicit inclusion of key ingredients that shape these statistics, such as the transmission grid structure, generation and consumer buses, power flow balance, periodic dispatches, system failures, secular demand growth, demand fluctuations, and variability of renewable energy sources. When applied to the Balearic Islands grid, this method identifies generation and storage layouts that minimize storage requirements while maintaining reliability levels comparable to conventional power systems. The results offer a complementary systems-level perspective for planning resilient and efficient renewable energy integration. Full article

Path smoothing is an important part of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) path planning, because the smoothness of the planned path is related to the flight safety and stability of UAVs. In existing smooth UAV path planning methods, different characteristics of a path curve are not considered comprehensively, and the optimization functions established based on the arc length or curvature of the path curve are complex, resulting in low efficiency and quality of path smoothing. To balance the arc length and smoothness of UAV paths, this paper proposes to use energy-minimizing Bézier curves based on composite energy for smooth UAV path planning. In order to simplify the calculation, a kind of approximate stretching energy and bending energy are used to control the arc length and smoothness, respectively, of the path, by which the optimal path can be directly obtained by solving a linear system. Experimental validation in multiple scenarios demonstrates the methodology’s effectiveness and real-time computational viability, where the planned paths by this method have the characteristics of curvature continuity, good smoothness, and short arc length. What is more, in many cases, compared to path smoothing methods based solely on bending energy optimization, the proposed method can generate paths with a smaller maximum curvature, which is more conducive to the safe and stable flight of UAVs. Furthermore, the design of collision-free smooth path for UAVs based on the piecewise energy-minimizing Bézier curve is studied. The new method is simple and efficient, which can help to improve UAV path planning efficiency and thus improve UAV reaction speed and obstacle avoidance ability. Full article

One of the goals of Agenda 2030 is to increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix. In this context, photovoltaic systems play a key role in the transition to clean energy. According to the International Energy Agency, in 2023, solar photovoltaic alone accounted for three-quarters of renewable capacity additions worldwide. Designing a performing photovoltaic system requires careful planning that takes into account various factors, both internal and external, in order to maximize energy production and optimize costs. In addition to the technical characteristics of the system (internal factors), the positions and the shapes of external buildings and surrounding obstacles (external factors) have a significant impact on the output of photovoltaic systems. However, given the complexity of these environmental factors, they cannot be treated accurately in manual design practice. For this reason, this paper proposes a Building Information Modeling-based workflow for the design of a photovoltaic system that can guide the professional step-by-step throughout the design process, starting from the embryonic phase to the definitive, and therefore more detailed, one. The developed methodology allows for an in-depth analysis of the shading, the photovoltaic potential of the building, the performance of the photovoltaic system, and the costs for its construction in order to evaluate the appropriateness of the investment. The main aim of the paper is to create a standardized procedure applicable on a large scale for photovoltaic integration within Building Information Modeling workflows. Multi-Objective Optimization Methods for University Campus Planning and Design—A Case Study of Dalian University of Technology

This study focuses on the multi-objective coordination problem in university campus planning and design, proposing an optimized methodology integrating an improved multi-objective decision-making framework. A five-dimensional objective system—comprising energy efficiency, spatial quality, economic cost, ecological benefits, and cultural expression—was established, alongside the identification and standardization of 29 key variables to construct mapping relationships among objective functions. On the algorithmic level, an adapted NSGA-III was implemented on the MATLAB platform (version R2022b), introducing a dynamic reference point mechanism and hybrid constraint-handling strategy to enhance convergence and solution diversity. Taking the northern residential area of the western campus of Dalian University of Technology as a case study, multiple Pareto-optimal solutions were generated. Five representative alternatives were selected and evaluated through the AHP–TOPSIS method to determine the optimal scheme. The results indicated significant improvements in energy, economic, spatial, and ecological dimensions, while also achieving quantifiable control over cultural expression. On this basis, an integrated optimization strategy targeting “form–function–environment–culture” was proposed, offering data-informed support and procedural reference for systematic campus planning. This study demonstrates the effectiveness, adaptability, and practical value of the proposed approach in addressing multi-objective conflicts in university planning. Full article

Maintenance scheduling of hydropower units is essential for ensuring the operational security and stability of large-scale cascaded hydropower systems and for improving the efficiency of water energy utilization. This study takes the Cascaded Hydropower System of the Lower Jinsha River (CHSJS) as a representative case, identifying four key challenges facing maintenance planning: multi-dimensional influencing factor coupling, spatial and temporal conflicts with generation dispatch, coordination with transmission line maintenance, and compound uncertainties of inflow and load. To address these issues, four strategic recommendations are proposed: (1) identifying and quantifying the impacts of multi-factor influences on maintenance planning; (2) developing integrated models for the co-optimization of power generation dispatch and maintenance scheduling; (3) formulating coordinated maintenance strategies for hydropower units and associated transmission infrastructure; and (4) constructing joint models to manage the coupled uncertainties of inflow and load. The strategy proposed in this study was applied to the CHSJS, obtaining the weight of the impact factor. The coordinated unit maintenance arrangements of transmission line maintenance periods increased from 56% to 97%. This study highlights the critical need for synergistic optimization of generation dispatch and maintenance scheduling in large-scale cascaded hydropower systems and provides a methodological foundation for future research and practical applications. Before the onset of global warming concerns, the idea of manufacturing electric vehicles on a large scale was not widely considered. However, electric vehicles offer several advantages that have garnered attention. They are environmentally friendly, with simpler drive systems compared to traditional fossil fuel vehicles. Additionally, electric vehicles are highly efficient, with an efficiency of around 90%, in contrast to fossil fuel vehicles, which have an efficiency of about 30% to 35%. The higher energy efficiency of electric vehicles contributes to lower operational costs, which, alongside regulatory incentives and shifting consumer preferences, has increased their strategic importance for many vehicle manufacturers. In this paper, we present a thematic literature review on electric vehicles charging station location planning and scheduling. A systematic literature review across various data sources in the area yielded ninety five research papers for the final review. The research results were analyzed thematically, and three key directions were identified, namely charging station deployment and placement, optimal allocation and scheduling of EV parking lots, and V2G and smart charging systems as the top three themes. Each theme was further investigated to identify key topics, ongoing works, and future trends. It has been found that optimization methods followed by simulation and multi-criteria decision-making are most commonly used for EV infrastructure planning. A multistakeholder perspective is often adopted in these decisions to minimize costs and address the range anxiety of users. The future trend is towards the integration of renewable energy in smart grids, uncertainty modeling of user demand, and use of artificial intelligence for service quality improvement. Full article

Underactuated robotic systems are appealing for industrial use due to their reduced actuator number, which lowers energy consumption and system complexity. Underactuated systems are, however, often affected by residual vibrations. This paper addresses the challenge of generating energy-optimal trajectories while imposing theoretical null residual (and yet practical low) vibration in underactuated systems. The trajectory planning problem is cast as a constrained optimal control problem (OCP) for a two-degree-of-freedom revolute–revolute planar manipulator. The proposed method produces energy-efficient motion while limiting residual vibrations under motor torque limitations. Experiments compare the proposed trajectories to input shaping techniques (ZV, ZVD, NZV, NZVD). The integration of high-penetration renewable energy sources (RESs) into transmission networks introduces profound uncertainty that challenges traditional infrastructure planning approaches. Existing transmission expansion planning (TEP) models either rely on static scenario sets or over-conservative worst-case assumptions, failing to capture the operational stress triggered by rare but structurally impactful renewable behaviors. This paper proposes a novel bi-level optimization framework for transmission planning under adversarial uncertainty, coupling a distributionally robust upper-level investment model with a lower-level operational response embedded with physics and market constraints. The uncertainty space was not exogenously fixed, but instead dynamically generated through a physics-informed spatiotemporal generative adversarial network (PI-ST-GAN), which synthesizes high-risk renewable and load scenarios designed to maximally challenge the system’s resilience. The generator was co-trained using a composite stress index—combining expected energy not served, loss-of-load probability, and marginal congestion cost—ensuring that each scenario reflects both physical plausibility and operational extremity. The resulting bi-level model was reformulated using strong duality, and it was decomposed into a tractable mixed-integer structure with embedded adversarial learning loops. The proposed framework was validated on a modified IEEE 118-bus system with high wind and solar penetration. Results demonstrate that the GAN-enhanced planner consistently outperforms deterministic and stochastic baselines, reducing renewable curtailment by up to 48.7% and load shedding by 62.4% under worst-case realization. Moreover, the stress investment frontier exhibits clear convexity, enabling planners to identify cost-efficient resilience strategies. Spatial congestion maps and scenario risk-density plots further illustrate the ability of adversarial learning to reveal latent structural bottlenecks not captured by conventional methods. This work offers a new methodological paradigm, in which optimization and generative AI co-evolve to produce robust, data-aware, and stress-responsive transmission infrastructure designs. This study identifies the optimal location for an offshore energy island to supply sustainable power to desalination plants along the Red Sea coast. As demand for clean energy in water production grows, integrating renewables into desalination systems becomes increasingly essential. A decision-making framework was developed to assess site feasibility based on renewable energy potential (solar, wind, and wave), marine traffic, site suitability, planned developments, and proximity to desalination facilities. Data was sourced from platforms such as Windguru and RETScreen, and spatial analysis was conducted using Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). Results indicate that the central Red Sea region offers the most favorable conditions, combining high renewable resource availability with existing infrastructure. The estimated regional desalination energy demand of 2.1 million kW can be met using available renewable sources. Integrating these sources is expected to reduce local CO2 emissions by up to 43.17% and global desalination-related emissions by 9.5%. Spatial constraints for offshore installations were also identified, with land-based solar energy proposed as a complementary solution. The study underscores the need for further research into wave energy potential in the Red Sea, due to limited real-time data and the absence of a dedicated wave energy atlas. Full article
