Modernizing irrigation systems (ISs) from traditional gravity methods to sprinkler and drip technologies has significantly improved water use efficiency. However, it has simultaneously increased electricity demand and operational costs. Integrating photovoltaic generators into ISs represents a promising solution, as solar energy availability typically aligns with peak irrigation periods. Despite this potential, photovoltaic pumping systems (PVPSs) often face reliability issues due to fluctuations in solar irradiance, resulting in frequent start/stop cycles and premature equipment wear. The IEC 62253 standard establishes procedures for evaluating PVPS performance but primarily addresses steady-state conditions, neglecting transient regimes. As the main contribution, the current paper proposes a non-intrusive, high-resolution monitoring system and a methodology to assess the performance of an isolated, high-power PVPS, considering also transient regimes. The system records critical electrical, hydraulic and environmental parameters every second, enabling in-depth analysis under various weather conditions. Two performance indicators, pumped volume efficiency and equivalent operating time, were used to evaluate the system’s performance. The results indicate that near-optimal performance is only achievable under clear sky conditions. Under the appearance of clouds, control strategies designed to protect the system reduce overall efficiency. The proposed methodology enables detailed performance diagnostics and supports the development of more robust PVPSs. Full article

Monthly Load Forecasting in a Region Experiencing Demand Growth: A Case Study of Texas

In this study, we consider monthly load forecasting, which is an essential decision for energy infrastructure planning and investment. This study focuses on the Texas power grid, where electricity consumption has surged due to rising industrial activity and the increased construction of data centers driven by growing demand for AI. Based on an extensive exploratory data analysis, we identify key characteristics of monthly electricity demand in Texas, including an accelerating upward trend, strong seasonality, and temperature sensitivity. In response, we propose a regression-based forecasting model that incorporates a carefully designed set of input features, including a nonlinear trend, lagged demand variables, a seasonality-adjusted month variable, average temperature of a representative area, and calendar-based proxies for industrial activity. We adopt a rolling forecasting approach, generating 12-month-ahead forecasts for both 2023 and 2024 using monthly data from 2013 onward. Comparative experiments against benchmarks including Holt–Winters, SARIMA, Prophet, RNN, LSTM, Transformer, Random Forest, LightGBM, and XGBoost show that the proposed model achieves superior performance with a mean absolute percentage error of approximately 2%. The results indicate that a well-designed regression approach can effectively outperform even the latest machine learning methods in monthly load forecasting. Full article

This work presents a high-fidelity simulation of the Peach Bottom turbine trip (PBTT) benchmark using the Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA), a multiphysics reactor modeling tool developed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors energy innovation hub. The PBTT benchmark, based on a 1977 transient event at the end of cycle 2 in a General Electric Type-4 boiling water reactor (BWR), is a critical test case for validating core physics models with thermal feedback during rapid reactivity events. VERA was employed to perform end-to-end, pin-resolved simulations from conditions at the beginning of cycle 1 through the turbine-trip transient, incorporating detailed neutron transport, fuel depletion, and subchannel thermal hydraulics. The simulation reproduced key benchmark observables with high accuracy: the peak power excursion occurred at 0.75 s, matching the scram time and closely aligning with the benchmark average of 0.742 s; the simulated maximum power spike was approximately 7600 MW, which is within 3% of the benchmark average of 7400 MW; and void-collapse dynamics were consistent with benchmark expectations. Reactivity predictions during cycles 1 and 2 remained within 1500 pcm and 400 pcm of criticality, respectively. These results confirm VERA’s ability to model complex coupled neutronic and thermal hydraulic behavior in a BWR turbine-trip transient, which will support its use in future studies of modeling dryout, fuel performance, and uncertainty quantification for transients of this type. The introduction of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) into the electricity grid is changing the price dynamics of the electricity market and creating room for flexibility on the consumption side. This paper investigates different aspects of the interaction between the RES share, electricity spot prices, and electric vehicle (EV) charging strategies. Based on empirical data from Germany, France, and the Czech Republic for the period 2015–2025, four research hypotheses are tested using correlation and regression analysis, cost simulations, and classification algorithms. The results confirm a negative correlation between the RES share and electricity prices, as well as the effectiveness of smart charging in reducing costs. At the same time, it is shown that the occurrence of negative prices is significantly affected by a high RES share. The correlation analysis further suggests that higher production from RESs increases the potential for price optimisation through smart charging. The findings have implications for policymaking aimed at flexible consumption and efficient RES integration. Full article

The efficiency of electric motors is highly dependent on their operating temperature, with lower temperatures contributing to enhanced performance, reliability, and extended service life. This study presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art cooling technologies and evaluates their impact on the thermal behavior of a commercial motor–generator system in high-demand applications. A baseline model of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) was developed using MotorCAD 2023® software, which was supported by reverse engineering techniques to accurately replicate the motor’s physical and thermal characteristics. Subsequently, multiple cooling strategies were simulated under consistent operating conditions to assess their effectiveness. These strategies include conventional axial water jackets as well as advanced oil-based methods such as shaft cooling and direct oil spray to the windings. The integration of these systems in hybrid configurations was also explored to maximize thermal efficiency. Simulation results reveal that hybrid cooling significantly reduces the temperature of critical components such as stator windings and permanent magnets. This reduction in thermal stress improves current efficiency, power output, and torque capacity, enabling reliable motor operation across a broader range of speeds and under sustained high-load conditions. The findings highlight the effectiveness of hybrid cooling systems in optimizing both thermal management and operational performance of electric machines. Full article

This study investigates a novel heat pipe integrated cooling system designed for thermal management of Tesla’s 4680 cylindrical lithium–ion batteries in electric vehicles (EVs). Through a comprehensive approach combining experimental analysis, 1-D AMESim simulations, and 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling, the thermal performance of various wick structures and working fluid filling ratios was evaluated. The experimental setup utilized a triangular prism chamber housing three surrogate heater blocks to replicate the heat generation of 4680 cells under 1C, 2C, and 3C discharge rates. Results demonstrated that a blended fabric wick with a crown-shaped design (Wick 5) at a 30–40% filling ratio achieved the lowest maximum temperature (Tmax of 47.0°C), minimal surface temperature deviation (ΔTsurface of 2.8°C), and optimal thermal resistance (Rth of 0.27°C/W) under 85 W heat input. CFD simulations validated experimental findings, confirming stable evaporation–condensation circulation at a 40% filling ratio, while identifying thermal limits at high heat loads (155 W). The proposed hybrid battery thermal management system (BTMS) offers significant potential for enhancing the performance and safety of high-energy density EV batteries. This research provides a foundation for optimizing thermal management in next-generation electric vehicles. Full article

The problem of choosing an electric generator in order to increase the reliability and continuity of energy supply to households in Ukraine was considered. It was shown that this choice is made under conditions of uncertainty. The methods of choosing alternatives to technical systems under conditions of uncertainty, based on axiomatic, heuristic and verbal decision-making methods described in the sources, were analyzed, and the Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) was selected to develop a model for choosing an electric generator. The technical, economic, operational and ergonomic criteria for choosing an electric generator were justified. The novelty of the article lies in the use of the developed structural hierarchical model for choosing an electric generator for a household, and the selection of the appropriate generator option for a household was carried out using the AHP. The selected F3001 generator model is characterized by the highest value of the generalized weighting factor due to the impact of estimates based on economic and operational criteria. The use of the cogeneration unit in an agricultural biogas plant was also indicated—as an alternative to household energy supply. Full article

To enhance the reliability of electric propulsion in electric aircraft and address power interruptions caused by current sensor failures, this study proposes a current sensorless fault-tolerant control strategy for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) based on a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. First, a hierarchical architecture is constructed to fuse multi-phase electrical signals in the fault diagnosis layer (sliding mode observer). A symbolic function for the reaching law observer is designed based on Lyapunov theory, in order to generate current predictions for fault diagnosis. Second, when a fault occurs, the system switches to the LSTM reconstruction layer. Finally, gating units are used to model nonlinear dynamics to achieve direct mapping of speed/position to phase current. Verification using a physical prototype shows that the proposed method can complete mode switching within 10 ms after a sensor failure, which is 80% faster than EKF, and its speed error is less than 2.5%, fully meeting the high speed error requirements of electric aircraft propulsion systems (i.e., ≤3%). The current reconstruction RMSE is reduced by more than 50% compared with that of the EKF, which ensures continuous and reliable control while maintaining the stable operation of the motor and realizing rapid switching. The intelligent algorithm and sliding mode control fusion strategy meet the requirements of high real-time performance and provide a highly reliable fault-tolerant scheme for electric aircraft propulsion. This study proposes the SMR Smart Net-Zero City (SSNC) framework—a scalable model for achieving carbon neutrality by integrating Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), renewable energy sources, and sector coupling within a microgrid architecture. As deploying renewables alone would require economically and technically impractical energy storage systems, SMRs provide a reliable and flexible baseload power source. Sector coupling systems—such as hydrogen production and heat generation—enhance grid stability by absorbing surplus energy and supporting the decarbonization of non-electric sectors. The core contribution of this study lies in its real-time data emulation framework, which overcomes a critical limitation in the current energy landscape: the absence of operational data for future technologies such as SMRs and their coupled hydrogen production systems. As these technologies are still in the pre-commercial stage, direct physical integration and validation are not yet feasible. To address this, the researchers leveraged real-time data from an existing commercial microgrid, specifically focusing on the import of grid electricity during energy shortfalls and export during solar surpluses. These patterns were repurposed to simulate the real-time operational behavior of future SMRs (ProxySMR) and sector coupling loads. This physically grounded simulation approach enables high-fidelity approximation of unavailable technologies and introduces a novel methodology to characterize their dynamic response within operational contexts. A key element of the SSNC control logic is a day–night strategy: maximum SMR output and minimal hydrogen production at night, and minimal SMR output with maximum hydrogen production during the day—balancing supply and demand while maintaining high SMR utilization for economic efficiency. The SSNC testbed was validated through a seven-day continuous operation in Busan, demonstrating stable performance and approximately 75% SMR utilization, thereby supporting the feasibility of this proxy-based method. Importantly, to the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first publicly reported attempt to emulate the real-time dynamics of a net-zero city concept based on not-yet-commercial SMRs and sector coupling systems using live operational data. This simulation-based framework offers a forward-looking, data-driven pathway to inform the development and control of next-generation carbon-neutral energy systems. Full article

Geospatial Assessment and Economic Analysis of Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Potential in Thailand

Evaluating the renewable energy potential, such as that of solar photovoltaics (PV), is important for developing renewable energy policies. This study investigated rooftop solar PV potential in Thailand based on open-source geographic information system (GIS) building footprints, solar PV power output, and the most recent land use data (2022). GIS-based overlay analysis, buffering, fishnet modeling, and spatial join operations were applied to assess rooftop availability across various building types, taking into account PV module installation parameters and optimal panel orientation. Economic feasibility and sensitivity analyses were conducted using standard economic metrics, including net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), payback period, and benefit–cost ratio (BCR). The findings showed a total rooftop solar PV power generation potential of 50.32 TWh/year, equivalent to 25.5% of Thailand’s total electricity demand in 2022. The Central region contributed the highest potential (19.59 TWh/year, 38.94%), followed by the Northeastern (10.49 TWh/year, 20.84%), Eastern (8.16 TWh/year, 16.22%), Northern (8.09 TWh/year, 16.09%), and Southern regions (3.99 TWh/year, 7.92%). Both commercial and industrial sectors reflect the financial viability of rooftop PV installations and significantly contribute to the overall energy output. These results demonstrate the importance of incorporating rooftop solar PV in renewable energy policy development in regions with similar data infrastructure, particularly the availability of detailed and standardized land use data for building type classification. Diamond, renowned for its exceptional electrical, physical, and chemical properties, including ultra-wide bandgap, superior hardness, high thermal conductivity, and unparalleled stability, serves as an ideal candidate for next-generation high-power and high-temperature electronic devices. Among diamond-based devices, Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) have garnered significant attention due to their simple architecture and superior rectifying characteristics. This review systematically summarizes recent advances in diamond SBDs, focusing on both metal–semiconductor (MS) and metal–interlayer–semiconductor (MIS) configurations. For MS structures, we critically analyze the roles of single-layer metals (including noble metals, transition metals, and other metals) and multilayer metals in modulating Schottky barrier height (SBH) and enhancing thermal stability. However, the presence of interface-related issues such as high densities of surface states and Fermi level pinning often leads to poor control of the SBH, limiting device performance and reliability. To address these challenges and achieve high-quality metal/diamond interfaces, researchers have proposed various interface engineering strategies. In particular, the introduction of interfacial layers in MIS structures has emerged as a promising approach. For MIS architectures, functional interlayers—including high-k materials (Al2O3, HfO2, SnO2) and low-work-function materials (LaB6, CeB6)—are evaluated for their efficacy in interface passivation, barrier modulation, and electric field control. Terminal engineering strategies, such as field-plate designs and surface termination treatments, are also highlighted for their role in improving breakdown voltage. Furthermore, we emphasize the limitations in current parameter extraction from current–voltage (I–V) properties and call for a unified new method to accurately determine SBH. This comprehensive analysis provides critical insights into interface engineering strategies and evaluation protocols for high-performance diamond SBDs, paving the way for their reliable deployment in extreme conditions. This work presents a semi-classical, quantum-corrected model of gravitational collapse for a charged, spherically symmetric dust cloud, extending the classical Oppenheimer–Snyder (OS) framework through loop quantum gravity effects. Our goal is to study phenomenological quantum modifications to geometry, without necessarily embedding them within full loop quantum gravity (LQG). Building upon the quantum Oppenheimer–Snyder (qOS) model, which replaces the classical singularity with a nonsingular bounce via a modified Friedmann equation, we introduce electric and magnetic charges concentrated on a massive thin shell at the boundary of the dust ball. The resulting exterior spacetime generalizes the Schwarzschild solution to a charged, regular black hole geometry akin to a quantum-corrected Reissner–Nordström metric. The Israel junction conditions are applied to match the interior APS (Ashtekar–Pawlowski–Singh) cosmological solution to the charged exterior, yielding constraints on the shell’s mass, pressure, and energy. Stability conditions are derived, including a minimum radius preventing full collapse and ensuring positivity of energy density. With the popularization of electric vehicles and the continuous expansion of the electric vehicle market, the construction and management of charging facilities for electric vehicles have become important issues in research and practice. In some remote areas, the charging stations are idle due to low traffic flow, resulting in a waste of resources. Areas with high traffic flow may have fewer charging stations, resulting in long queues and road congestion. The purpose of this study is to optimize the location of charging stations and the number of charging piles in the stations based on the distribution of traffic flow, and to construct a bi-level programming model by analyzing the distribution of traffic flow. The upper-level planning model is the user-balanced flow allocation model, which is solved to obtain the optimal traffic flow allocation of the road network, and the output of the upper-level planning model is used as the input of the lower-layer model. The lower-level planning model is a generalized minimum cost model with driving time, charging waiting time, charging time, and the cost of electricity consumed to reach the destination of the trip as objective functions. In this study, an empirical simulation is conducted on the road network of Hefei City, Anhui Province, utilizing three algorithms—GA, GWO, and PSO—for optimization and sensitivity analysis. The optimized results are compared with the existing charging station deployment scheme in the road network to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Full article

Brain organoid technology has revolutionized in vitro modeling of human neurodevelopment and disease, providing unprecedented insights into cortical patterning, neural circuit assembly, and pathogenic mechanisms of neurological disorders. Critically, human brain organoids uniquely recapitulate human-specific developmental processes—such as the expansion of outer radial glia and neuromelanin—that are absent in rodent models, making them indispensable for studying human brain evolution and dysfunction. However, a major bottleneck persists: Extended culture periods (≥6 months) are empirically required to achieve late-stage maturation markers like synaptic refinement, functional network plasticity, and gliogenesis. Yet prolonged conventional 3D culture exacerbates metabolic stress, hypoxia-induced necrosis, and microenvironmental instability, leading to asynchronous tissue maturation—electrophysiologically active superficial layers juxtaposed with degenerating cores. This immaturity/heterogeneity severely limits their utility in modeling adult-onset disorders (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease) and high-fidelity drug screening, as organoids fail to recapitulate postnatal transcriptional signatures or neurovascular interactions without bioengineering interventions. We summarize emerging strategies to decouple maturation milestones from rigid temporal frameworks, emphasizing the synergistic integration of chronological optimization (e.g., vascularized co-cultures) and active bioengineering accelerators (e.g., electrical stimulation and microfluidics). By bridging biological timelines with scalable engineering, this review charts a roadmap to generate translationally relevant, functionally mature brain organoids. Full article

Mechanism-Driven Strength–Conductivity Synergy in Hypereutectic Al-Si Alloys Reinforced with Interface-Engineered Ni-Coated CNTs

Secondary hypereutectic Al-Si alloys are attractive for sustainable manufacturing, yet their application is often limited by low strength and electrical conductivity due to impurity-induced microstructural defects. Achieving a balance between mechanical and conductive performance remains a significant challenge. In this work, nickel-coated carbon nanotubes (Ni-CNTs) were introduced into secondary Al-20Si alloys to tailor the microstructure and enhance properties through interfacial engineering. Composites containing 0 to 0.4 wt.% Ni-CNTs were fabricated by conventional casting and systematically characterized. The addition of 0.1 wt.% Ni-CNTs resulted in the best combination of properties, with a tensile strength of 170.13 MPa and electrical conductivity of 27.60% IACS. These improvements stem from refined α-Al dendrites, uniform eutectic Si distribution, and strong interfacial bonding. Strengthening was achieved through grain refinement, Orowan looping, dislocation generation from thermal mismatch, and the formation of reinforcing interfacial phases such as AlNi3C0.9 and Al4SiC4. At higher Ni-CNT contents, property degradation occurred due to agglomeration and phase coarsening. This study presents an effective and scalable strategy for achieving strength–conductivity synergy in secondary aluminum alloys via nanoscale interfacial design, offering guidance for the development of multifunctional lightweight materials.
