Functional food plays an increasingly important role in shaping healthy dietary habits by integrating health-promoting components into consumers’ everyday diets and helping reduce food waste. Products developed using by-products and raw material streams from food processing can support the principles of the circular economy (CE) by improving resource efficiency and lowering the environmental footprint of the food system. In Poland, as in many countries worldwide, functional food is a rapidly growing category that can contribute to public health and serve as a driver of economic development. However, the excessive and scientifically unsupported use of the term “functional food” for marketing purposes may mislead consumers and weaken trust in this product group. From a CE perspective, transparent communication and informed consumer choices are essential, as they promote environmentally responsible behaviors and support sustainable production models. The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge about functional food among residents of Eastern Poland, which is a less industrialized and predominantly agricultural region. The analysis focused on awareness of health benefits, consumption frequency, consumer attitudes, and interest in educational initiatives promoting functional food within CE principles. The study also examined whether consumers associate functional food with sustainability-oriented practices. The findings offer insights for educational and marketing strategies grounded in scientific evidence and highlight the potential of functional food in building a sustainable, resource-efficient food system. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the main type of liver cancer and one of the malignancies with the highest mortality rates worldwide. HCC is associated with diverse etiological factors including alcohol use, viral infections, fatty liver disease, and liver cirrhosis (a major risk factor for HCC). Unfortunately, many patients are diagnosed at advanced stages of the disease and receive palliative treatment only. Therefore, early markers of HCC and novel therapeutic approaches are urgently needed. The endocannabinoid system is involved in various physiological processes such as motor coordination, emotional control, learning and memory, neuronal development, antinociception, and immunological processes. Interestingly, endocannabinoids modulate signaling pathways involved in cell survival, proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, and immune response. Consistently, several cannabinoids have demonstrated potential antitumor properties in experimental models. The participation of metabotropic and ionotropic cannabinoid receptors in the biological effects of cannabinoids has been extensively described. In addition, cannabinoids interact with other targets, including several ion channels. Notably, several ion channels targeted by cannabinoids are involved in inflammation, proliferation, and apoptosis in liver diseases, including HCC. In this literature review, we describe and discuss both the endocannabinoid system and exogenous phytocannabinoids, such as cannabidiol and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, along with their canonical receptors, as well as the cannabidiol-targeted ion channels and their role in liver cancer and its preceding liver diseases. The cannabidiol-ion channel association is an extraordinary opportunity in liver cancer prevention and therapy, with potential implications for several environments that are for the benefit of cancer patients, including sociocultural, public health, and economic systems. Even though environmental health and climate change are rapidly intensifying the severity of determinants of disease and inequity, training for health professionals in these areas remains fragmented across Europe. To address this gap, the European Medical Association (EMA), in collaboration with the European Network on Climate and Health Education (ENCHE), the International Network on Public Health and Environment Tracking (INPHET) and University College London, convened a one-day hybrid roundtable in London on 17 September 2025, focused on “Preparing Health Professionals for Environmental Health and Climate Change: A Challenge for Europe”. The programme combined keynote presentations on global and European policy, health economics and curriculum design with three disease-focused roundtables (respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological conditions), each examining the following topics: (A) climate and environment as preventable causes of disease; (B) healthcare as a source of environmental harm; and (C) capacity building through education and training. Contributors highlighted how environmental epidemiology, community-based prevention programmes and sustainable clinical practice can be integrated into teaching, illustrating models from respiratory, cardiovascular, surgical and neurological care. EU-level speakers outlined the policy framework (European Green Deal, Zero Pollution Action Plan and forthcoming global health programme) and tools through which professional and scientific societies can both inform and benefit from European action on environment and health. Discussions converged on persistent obstacles, including patchy national commitments to decarbonising healthcare, isolated innovations that are not scaled and curricula that do not yet embed sustainability in examinable clinical competencies. The conference concluded with proposals to develop an operational education package on environmental and climate health; map and harmonise core competencies across undergraduate, postgraduate and Continuing -professional-development pathways; and establish a permanent EMA-led working group to co-produce a broader position paper with professional and scientific societies. This conference report summarises the main messages and is intended as a bridge between practice-based experience and a formal EMA position on environmental-health training in Europe. Full article

Antimicrobials are common drugs used to treat and prevent infectious diseases in plants, animals, and humans. Since their discovery in the mid-20th century, their use has dramatically increased for the benefit of humanity, and also for animal care. However, antimicrobial resistance soon appeared, which, according to the WHO, will limit or impede their use at the horizon of 2050. Indeed, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is a natural phenomenon in bacteria increased dramatically over the last 3 decades mainly due to the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in humans, animals, and plants. Apart from affecting human health, drug-resistant diseases also adversely affect plant and animal health, reduce agricultural productivity, and threaten food security. AMR affects all countries, regardless of economic status, and imposes high costs on health systems and national economies. Therefore, antimicrobial resistance should be studied and analyzed under the One Health paradigm. In mind of the One Health paradigm, to reduce and overcome AMR, we must take at least 3 complementary and integrated actions: (i) monitoring the resistome; (ii) developing protective strategies against antibiotic resistance; (iii) taking curative actions by designing new and original treatments. Background: Healthcare is a large contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, contributing to climate change and health impairments. However, the magnitude of health and climate benefits of local and regional GHG mitigation strategies has not been well quantified. Few studies have demonstrated the use of public tools for this purpose in healthcare facilities. Methods: We evaluated several renewable energy and energy efficiency scenarios focused on one academic medical center in New York State. We used the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) publicly available AVoided Emissions and geneRation Tool to estimate avoided GHG and health-harmful air pollutant emissions. The economic value of the resulting avoided health and climate damages was quantified using EPA’s CO-Benefits Risk Assessment screening tool. Results: Transitioning one healthcare institution to 100% solar energy and improving energy efficiency by 25% could yield approximately $807,000 to $1.5 million in annual health savings, with an additional $2.3 million benefits in avoided climate damages. There is an approximate $108.5–$196.6 million in annual climate and health benefits when extrapolating these energy solutions to hospitals across the same state. Conclusions: There are significant health savings from healthcare GHG mitigation strategies. This application of publicly available and accessible tools demonstrates ways to integrate climate and health benefits into local decision-making around climate change mitigation and sustainability efforts. Objectives. To integrate clinical and economic evidence on the main non-pharmacological interventions aimed to reduce the burden of caregivers of people with dementia, with specific attention to stated preference measures (SPM), Willingness-to-Pay (WTP) and Willingness-to-Accept (WTA), alongside other cost-effectiveness indicators (ICER, QALY). Methods. A systematic review was conducted on randomized and quasi-experimental evaluations, economic models, and preference studies concerning psychoeducational/coping interventions, activity-centered/occupational programs (TAP), technological solutions and tele-support, and goal-oriented cognitive rehabilitation (CR). For each study, the following indexes were extracted: design, sample size, psychological outcomes (anxiety/depression, burden, engagement), utility per QALY, costs per perspective (the health–social and the broader societal perspectives), ICER, WTP/WTA, and sensitivity results. Results. Psychoeducational programs and CR show consistent benefits on distress, anxiety/depression, and caregiver quality of life; TAP reduces caregiver burden and patient behavioral problems, with favorable signs of cost–effectiveness; results on the effects of technologies are heterogeneous, but online modules with telephone support improve psychological morbidity. QALY improvement is generally modest, but the probability of cost-effectiveness remains high when costs do not differ significantly from treatment as usual, or when, from a societal perspective, the unpaid caregiving time of the caregiver is valued. Preference studies indicate positive WTP for additional hours of home care, health–social integration, and facilitated groups; evidence on WTA is scarcer and methodologically variable. Conclusions. Short, structured interventions with a human support component offer good value-for-money; the adoption of societal perspectives and the systematic use of WTP/WTA can better capture the value perceived by caregivers. The massive influx of pelagic Sargassum in the Caribbean poses a serious environmental, social, and economic problem, as the stranded biomass is often treated as waste and deposited in landfills. This literature review synthesizes recent research highlighting its potential for valorization in various industries, turning this challenge into an opportunity. Sargassum has low levels of protein and lipids. Still, it is particularly rich in carbohydrates, such as alginates, fucoidans, mannitol, and cellulose, as well as secondary metabolites, including phenolic compounds, flavonoids, pigments, and phytosterols with antioxidant and bioactive properties. These biochemical characteristics allow for its application in renewable energy (bioethanol, biogas, biodiesel, and combustion), agriculture (fertilizers and biostimulants), construction (composite materials, cement additives, and insulation), bioremediation (adsorption of heavy metals and dyes), and in the health sector (antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and pharmacological uses). A major limitation is its high bioaccumulation capacity for heavy metals, particularly arsenic, which increases environmental and health risks and limits its direct use in food and feed. Therefore, innovative pretreatment and bioprocessing are essential to mitigate these risks. The most promising approach for its utilization is a biorefinery model, which allows for the sequential extraction of multiple high-value compounds and energy products to maximize benefits, reduce costs, and sustainably transform Sargassum from a coastal pest into a valuable industrial resource. The impact of tourism on Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) in Patagonia is a complex issue that requires a balanced approach between conservation and sustainable tourism development. While tourism in the region can bring significant economic benefits, it can also have a negative impact on the penguins by disrupting nesting behavior and chick rearing, and even increasing the risk of disease and predation. We examined a comparative analysis of scientific papers on the impact of tourism on Magellanic penguins in two breeding colonies in Argentinean Patagonia, which have been visited for 10 to 50 years and whose visitor numbers range from 10,000 to 120,000 per year. We analyzed different physiological parameters (i.e., immunological, hematological, biochemical, and stress parameters) and behavioral respond (alternate head turns) in adult birds and chicks in these colonies. Although the results suggest that Magellanic penguins have adapted well to the presence of tourists in their breeding colonies, we documented changes in certain physiological parameters that indicate chronic stress due to high exposure to tourism. It is important to promote sustainable tourism in Patagonia that not only minimizes these negative impacts but also improves the protection of the penguins and their habitat. This includes the creation of new nature reserves, environmental education, and the regulation of tourism activities. Implementing responsible tourism practices can ensure economic benefits while protecting the well-being and health of penguin populations. The combination of increased tourist awareness and concrete conservation measures can protect not only the Magellanic penguins but also the natural wealth of the entire Patagonia region. Full article

As critical urban blue–green infrastructure, urban wetland parks serve as vital venues for visitors to obtain restorative experiences. However, existing studies primarily emphasize their ecological and economic benefits, with comparatively limited attention paid to their roles in promoting public mental health and enhancing well-being. Using Yanghu Wetland Park in Changsha as a case study, this research investigates how restorative environmental perception influences visitors’ well-being through two mediating variables: environmental preference and place attachment. A total of 251 valid responses were collected through field surveys and questionnaires. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to empirically examine the relationships among the variables. This study enriches the theoretical framework of environmental psychology and urban landscape behavior research. It also provides evidence-based insights into the planning and design of urban wetland parks, contributing to the enhancement of public well-being and overall life satisfaction. Full article

The deployment of solar and other renewable energy technologies (RETs) plays a central role in the global energy transition and the pursuit of sustainable development. Beyond reducing greenhouse gas emissions, these technologies generate far-reaching societal co-benefits that shape environmental quality, social equity, and economic growth. This study systematically reviews peer-reviewed literature published between 2009 and 2025 to identify, integrate, and assess empirical evidence on how RET deployment contributes to societal welfare. Following the SALSA framework and PRISMA guidelines, 147 studies were selected from Scopus and Web of Science. The evidence reveals a consistent welfare triad: environmental gains (emission and pollution reduction, climate mitigation), social gains (improved health, affordability, energy security, and inclusion), and economic gains (employment and income growth, local development). These benefits are, however, heterogeneous and depend on enabling conditions such as policy stability, financial development, grid integration, innovation capacity, and social acceptance. The review highlights that solar energy, in particular, acts as both an environmental and social catalyst in advancing sustainable welfare outcomes. The findings provide a comprehensive basis for policymakers and researchers seeking to design equitable and welfare-enhancing renewable energy transitions. Full article

Ethiopia presents a compelling paradox in sustainable development: despite decades of rapid economic growth, improvements in human well-being have not been commensurate. This study examines the role of global economic integration in resolving this paradox by analyzing the impact of trade openness (TOP) and foreign direct investment (FDI) on human development in Ethiopia from 1991 to 2021. We hypothesize that this paradox arises because the benefits of trade and FDI operate primarily through an income-growth channel, with a weaker direct effect on health and education capabilities. Moving beyond the standard Human Development Index (HDI), we construct a modified index (HDI*) that excludes the income component, allowing us to disentangle direct effects on health and education from indirect effects mediated through economic growth. Using the ARDL bounds testing approach, we find that TOP and FDI have significantly stronger long-run effects on standard HDI (0.343 and 0.214, respectively) than on the non-income HDI* (0.235 and 0.136). This indicates that approximately one-third (31.5%) of TOP’s and over one-third (36.4%) of FDI’s total benefit is income-mediated, while the remainder reflects direct capability enhancement. The analysis further reveals that institutional quality significantly amplifies these benefits, whereas inflation specifically undermines non-income dimensions, highlighting the acute vulnerability of social sectors to macroeconomic instability. We conclude that the Ethiopian paradox stems not from a failure of growth but from its weak translation into direct, sustainable gains in health and education. We recommend policies to strengthen institutional governance, attract FDI into health and education sectors, lower trade barriers for agricultural exports, and use trade agreements to address structural trade deficits and promote sustainable human development. Background: Caryocar brasiliense Camb. Caryocaraceae is a typical tree from the Brazilian Cerrado with commercial importance due to its edible fruit, known as pequi. This native plant holds significant economic value and is a key candidate for cropping systems. Rich in phytochemicals, such as phenolics, flavonoids, and terpenoids, it has shown notable health benefits. Methods: Considering the importance of terpenes and their biological properties, and based on the first draft genome of C. brasiliense, this study aimed to identify putative terpene synthase genes and classify them into the phylogenetic subfamilies previously identified across all plant lineages. The presence of terpenes was also verified in samples of the outer portion of the fruit by solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography mass-spectrometry. Results: Analysis of genome completeness showed that over 90% of genes were identified despite a highly fragmented assembly, with 71% containing complete gene sequences. Twenty-two genes were retained as putative terpene synthase genes considering their homology with the terpene synthase Hidden Markov Model (HMM) profiles in the Pfam-A database. Ten sequences with a minimum length of 298 amino acids were used for phylogenetic inference. In the resulting phylogenetic tree, C. brasiliense terpene synthase genes clustered within the different previously identified Angiosperm clades and allowed us to classify each gene into different phylogenetic subfamilies: six genes belonged to the h/d/a/b/g, three to the c, and one to the e/f. The headspace solid-phase microextraction technique, in conjunction with gas chromatography mass-spectrometry, has allowed for the identification of eleven chemical compounds, including a terpene. Conclusions: This initial identification of putative terpene synthase genes in pequi, together with the chemical analysis of the outer fruits, lays the groundwork for future studies aimed at optimizing terpene biosynthesis for both biological and commercial applications. Therapy farms are increasingly recognized as social innovations that respond to exclusion, mental health challenges, and youth disconnection, particularly in rural areas. While often praised for their inclusive and rehabilitative potential, their broader impact on structural social transformation remains under-examined. This study explores the House of Educational Experiences, a therapeutic farm in rural Lithuania, to critically assess how such initiatives function as both agents of inclusion and stabilizers of existing socio-economic arrangements. Drawing on a qualitative case study approach, the research analyses in-depth interview data through the lens of the social innovation cycle, focusing on novelty, process, heterogeneity, impact, scalability, and transformative potential. Our findings reveal that the therapeutic farm generates significant individual and community benefits, particularly in psychosocial well-being, social skills, and pathways back into education and employment. However, the initiative also operates within institutional constraints, relying on project-based funding and reproducing aspects of conventional care systems. As such, its transformative capacity appears limited by structural dependencies and policy fragmentation. The study concludes that therapy farms represent an ambivalent form of social innovation: capable of creating inclusive, localized change, but often constrained in their ability to catalyze systemic transformation. Policy recommendations emphasize the need for long-term funding, institutional integration, and cross-sector collaboration. Full article

Urban and population densification have resulted in deteriorating living conditions for populations and the loss of UGSs. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities of our societies, but it has also demonstrated the importance of UGSs as intrinsic elements for maintaining the quality of life of the population and making urban spaces sustainable. Due to its considerable area of UGS, the district of Benfica in Lisbon, Portugal, is the object of study. The study focuses on understanding how the proximity of UGS influences the practice of leisure activities for different publics, and how they are reflected in the populations’ lives, exploring the context during the COVID-19 pandemic. It develops a methodology with a mixed-methods approach: (1) literature review, policies, and urban planning; (2) observation methods, mapping and spatial analysis of UGS types; and (3) surveys. The empirical results indicate the importance of proximity to improve the frequency, namely for the elderly and children. The results also demonstrate that the quality (infrastructure and equipment) of UGS, despite having less walking proximity, is an important element to attract people to use the UGS. A general conclusion is that the proximity and accessibility (walking or public transport) are interlinked in both profiles of UGS, demonstrating a relationship between the place of residence, easy access and frequency of UGS in the practice of activities and the self-assessed physical and mental health benefits. Native to the western Atlantic, the Atlantic blue crab Callinectes sapidus (CS) has spread to the Mediterranean, affecting local ecosystems and mussel aquaculture and leading to severe ecological and financial losses in Italy and other areas. Given its rapid spread and socio-economic impacts, several countries have begun to exploit CS commercially, but the consumers’ interest is still limited. In this study, we analysed both nutrient and nutraceutical profiles of CS meats, evaluating potential differences related to sex and meat typology. We found that CS meats are rich in high quality proteins and contain all the essential amino acids required for a correct diet. The fat of CS is not only rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) but also displays remarkably low atherogenicity and thrombogenicity indices, highlighting its strong potential in promoting cardiovascular health. In addition, CS is rich in nutraceutical compounds, in particular polyphenols and astaxanthin, revealing a good antioxidant activity maintained after simulated gastrointestinal hydrolysis. Last but not least, CS has remarkable α-glucosidase and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory activity, highlighting potential benefits in controlling glycaemic peaks and hypertension.
