This study aims to identify research trends in communication regarding the phenomenon of “fake news” in digital media. Fake news has become a rapidly growing and significant area of research in communication studies in recent years. Published studies were collected from the Science Citation Index Expanded database. The analysis included the annual distribution of publications, citation metrics, leading journals, countries, institutions, and authors. To explore the conceptual structure, topic modeling was conducted using text mining techniques along with DBSCAN and k-means clustering methods. The United States is a leader in the field, both as a producer country and in terms of technology implementation. Vraga, Bode, Tully, Hameleers, and Tandoc are among the most influential authors. The most cited studies specifically focus on misinformation in the health sector and political disinformation and manipulation during elections. Topic modeling analyses show that the literature mainly clusters around health disinformation, political communication, and verification technologies. The findings have important implications for communication policies, media literacy, and fact-checking technologies. Research that systematically examines fake news from a communication perspective, both in performance and conceptual structures, is scarce in the literature. The resulting thematic clusters provide valuable insights for future research. Full article

This study aimed to examine the role of ChatGPT in supporting travel decision-making by investigating its direct influence and the mediating effects of trust in AI-generated content, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use. Data were collected from 1208 qualified respondents and selected through non-probability convenience sampling from active digital travel communities on platforms. The results revealed that ChatGPT affects travel decision-making and also significantly influences users’ trust in AI-generated content, their perception of usefulness, and ease of use. Furthermore, all three mediators were found to significantly impact travel decision-making, and mediation analysis confirmed that these variables partially explain the link between ChatGPT usage and tourists’ behavioral intentions. These findings advance TAM by positioning trust as a central mechanism in AI adoption and demonstrate ChatGPT’s potential as a decision-support tool in tourism. This study offers practical insights for developers and policymakers seeking to improve transparency, reliability, and user experience of conversational AI in travel contexts. Full article

Unseasonal GI Norovirus Trends in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan: Insights from Wastewater Surveillance

Norovirus is the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, responsible for up to 90% of viral gastroenteritis outbreaks and an estimated 10.6 billion USD in annual economic losses in the U.S. Despite its well-documented seasonality, wastewater surveillance in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan reveals persistent GI norovirus detection year-round, diverging from national clinical trends that consistently show far greater GII prevalence. To characterize norovirus dynamics in this region, 250 mL wastewater influent grab samples were collected once per week across 14 sites, concentrated using a PEG-based method, and analyzed via digital droplet PCR (ddPCR) for GI and GII concentrations. Across the study period, the rate of positive sites per month ranged from 57 to 100% for GI and 74 to 97% for GII, with mean positivity rates of 85.4% (GI) and 88.7% (GII), indicating that both genogroups were detected frequently at comparable levels. GI was more prevalent in winter and spring (December–May), whereas GII was more prevalent during spring and summer (March–August). Mean GI gene copies per 100 mL ranged from 12,898 (October) to 532,792 (February), while mean GII concentrations ranged from 29,806 (December) to 1,100,215 (May). These patterns contrast with national clinical data, where GI contributes to a small minority of reported norovirus cases. This study explores potential environmental and behavioral factors contributing to this regional pattern. GI norovirus demonstrates greater resistance to wastewater treatment and environmental stability, which may facilitate its persistence in the region. Additionally, congregate living settings, such as college campuses and correctional facilities, may contribute to sustained GI prevalence through foodborne transmission and asymptomatic viral shedding. Overall, these findings suggest that environmental and social factors influence norovirus seasonality and genogroup distribution in this region, underscoring the need for improved monitoring and expanded multi-site wastewater and epidemiological research to better understand norovirus persistence in similar communities. Battery-Free Sensor Nodes (BFSNs) used in Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) systems often rely on lightweight communication protocols with minimal security overhead due to strict energy constraints. As a result, conventional protocol-dependent security mechanisms cannot be employed, leaving BFSNs vulnerable to replay, spoofing, and other security threats. This paper explores a protocol-independent security mechanism that enhances BFSN security by exploiting the power wave for controlled backscattering. The method introduces a Manchester-encoded digital private key generated by the BFSN’s low-power microcontroller and backscattered through a polarization-shifting module enabled by a fail-safe RF switch, thereby avoiding the need for a dedicated backscattering rectifier. A LoRaWAN-based BFSN integrating this add-on module was implemented to experimentally validate the approach. Results show successful extraction of the backscattered key with minimal energy overhead (approximately 95 µJ for a 3 ms identification sequence), while the original high-efficiency RF rectifier used for harvesting remains unmodified. The orthogonal polarization between the incoming and backscattered waves additionally reduces clutter and cross-jamming effects. These findings demonstrate that secure identification can be seamlessly incorporated into existing BFSNs without altering their core architecture, offering an easy-to-integrate and energy-efficient solution for improving security in SWIPT-based sensing systems. Incivility, Ostracism, and Social Climate Surveys Through the Lens of Disabled People: A Scoping Review

Incivility and civility have been studied for more than a century across disciplines and in many areas ranging from workplaces to communication, the digital world, and everyday life. They are often used to the detriment of marginalized groups. Their negative use is seen to set the groundwork for other negative treatments, such as bullying and harassment, impacting the social climate in a negative way. Ostracism is seen to be linked to incivility. Disabled people disproportionally face negative treatments, such as bullying and harassment, and experience a negative social climate, as highlighted by the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, suggesting that they also disproportionately experience incivility and ostracism. Climate surveys aim to expose toxic social climate in workplaces, schools, and communities caused by incivility, ostracism, bullying, and harassment. As such, how incivility, civility, ostracism, and the design of climate surveys are discussed in the literature is of importance to disabled people. We could find no review that analyzed the use of climate surveys beyond individual surveys and the concepts of incivility and ostracism in relation to disabled people. The objective of our study was to contribute to filling this gap by analyzing the academic literature present in SCOPUS, EBSCO HOST (70 databases), and Web of Science, performing keyword frequency and content analysis of abstracts and full texts. Our findings provide empirical evidence for a systemic neglect of disabled people in the topics covered: from 21,215 abstracts mentioning “civilit*” or “incivilit*”, only 14 were relevant, and of the 8358 abstracts mentioning ostracism, only 26 were relevant. Of the 3643 abstracts mentioning “climate surveys,” 12 sources covered disabled people by focusing on a given survey, but not one study performed an evaluation of the utility of climate surveys for disabled people in general. Racism is seen as a structural problem facilitating civility/incivility. Ableism, the negative judgments of a given set of abilities someone has, and disablism, the systemic discrimination based on such judgments, are structural problems experienced by disabled people, facilitating civility/incivility. However, ableism generated only 2 hits, and disablism/disableism had no hits. Most of our sources focused on workplace incivility, and authors were mostly from the USA. We found no linkage to social and policy discourses that aim to make the social environment better, such as equity, diversity, and inclusion, well-being, and science and technology governance. This is the first paper of its kind to look in depth at how the academic literature engages with the concepts of civility, incivility, and ostracism and with the instrument of social climate surveys in relation to disabled people. Our findings can be used by many different disciplines and fields to strengthen the theoretical and practical discussions on the topics in relation to disabled people and beyond. Full article

Background: Maintaining physical activity (PA) is vital for older people, particularly those with frailty and mobility limitations. Wearable activity trackers and digital feedback tools show promise for encouraging PA, but their feasibility and acceptability in aged care remain underexplored. This study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of using wearable and mobile devices for step tracking and examined the usability of three interfaces (Fitbit, mobile app, and website) for reviewing PA progress in aged care. Methods: This is a user experience and feasibility study that does not involve objective physical activity quantification or device performance analysis. It is a mixed-methods feasibility study conducted with 14 participants aged ≥65 years from residential and community aged care services in metropolitan and regional New South Wales, Australia. Participants used a Fitbit Inspire 3 linked to a study website and a mobile phone step-counting app to monitor their steps across the three interfaces for four weeks. Feasibility was evaluated through enrolment and retention, and acceptability through a facilitator-led survey. Quantitative items on usability, comfort, motivation and device preference were summarised descriptively; open-ended responses were analysed thematically to identify user experiences, benefits, and barriers. Results: Step tracking was feasible, with 82% enrolment and 93% retention. Participants preferred the Fitbit over the mobile phone or website due to its ease of use, visibility and more enjoyable experience. Step tracking increased awareness of PA and supported confidence to move more. Participants valued reminders, rewards and opportunities for social sharing. Reported barriers included illness, usability challenges and occasional technical issues. Conclusions: Wearable step trackers show promise for supporting PA among older people receiving aged care. Despite the small sample and short follow-up, strong acceptability signals suggest that simple digital tools could enhance the reach and sustainability of mobility-promoting interventions into aged care systems. Future studies should examine long-term adherence, usability across diverse mobility and cognitive needs, and conditions for successful scale-up. Full article

In the digital age, social media platforms homogenize beauty standards and intricately link clothing choices to social norms and class identities. Grounded in Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of cultural and social capital, supplemented by Erving Goffman’s theory of stigma, this study examines how social media amplifies pre-existing socio-cultural pressures that influence Turkish women’s decisions to abandon the hijab. The research has practical implications for understanding and addressing hijab abandonment. It employs a qualitative design based on semi-structured interviews with 13 participants, analyzed through a phenomenological approach. The findings reveal that the pursuit of social acceptance and resistance to social exclusion are more decisive factors in hijab abandonment than direct social media influence. While social media serves as a crucial amplifier of aesthetic ideals and a gateway to digital legitimacy, the primary drivers are deeply rooted in the pursuit of social acceptance and resistance to long-standing mechanisms of socio-cultural exclusion, stigmatization, and symbolic violence—processes intensified and mediated through digital platforms. The analysis uncovers the operation of a dual-sided neighborhood pressure, whereby women face scrutiny from both religious communities enforcing idealized piety norms and secular circles perpetuating stigmatizing labels such as backwardness or ignorance. Crucially, participants reported that unveiling was strategically employed as a means of overcoming barriers to professional advancement, gaining access to elite social spheres, and escaping the constant burden of representation. The study concludes that hijab abandonment emerges as a complex strategy of social navigation, where digital platforms act as powerful accelerants of pre-existing class- and identity-based conflicts. This work presents an experimental evaluation of a high-speed analog-to-digital conversion method based on passive reference waveform crossings combined with time-to-digital converter (TDC) time-tagging. Unlike conventional level-crossing event-driven analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) that require dynamically updated digital-to-analog converters (DACs), the proposed architecture compares the input waveform against a broadband periodic sampling function without active threshold control. Crossing instants are detected by a high-speed comparator and converted into rising and falling edge timestamps using a multi-channel TDC. A commercial ScioSense GPX2-based time-tagger with 30 ps single-shot precision was used for validation. A range of test signals—including 5 MHz sine, sawtooth, damped sine, and frequency-modulated chirp waveforms—were acquired using triangular, sinusoidal, and sawtooth sampling functions. Stroboscopic sampling was demonstrated using reference frequencies lower than the signal of interest, enabling effective undersampling of periodic radio frequency (RF) waveforms. The method achieved effective bandwidths approaching 100 MHz, with amplitude reconstruction errors of 0.05–0.30 RMS for sinusoidal signals and 0.15–0.40 RMS for sawtooth signals. Timing jitter showed strong dependence on the relative slope between the acquired waveform and sampling function: steep regions produced jitter near 5 ns, while shallow regions exhibited jitter up to 20 ns. The study has several limitations, including the bandwidth and dead-time constraints of the commercial TDC, the finite slew rate and noise of the comparator front-end, and the limited frequency range of the generated sampling functions. These factors influence the achievable timing precision and reconstruction accuracy, especially in low-gradient signal regions. Overall, the passive waveform-crossing method demonstrates strong potential for wideband, sparse, and rapidly varying signals, with natural scalability to multi-channel systems. Potential application domains include RF acquisition, ultra-wideband (UWB) radar, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems, high-speed instrumentation, and wideband timed antenna arrays. Taiwan’s rural regions face aging populations, digital divides, and fragmented heritage narratives that limit sustainable cultural revitalization. This study investigates how a community-based Alternate Reality Game (ARG) can integrate dispersed cultural assets in Shiding District into a coherent, immersive experience that supports intergenerational learning and community engagement. Drawing on ARG/transmedia narrative theory, scaffolding theory, intergenerational learning, and value co-creation, the research adopts an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design: qualitative interviews and co-design workshops inform ARG system development, followed by field implementation and pre–post evaluation with 78 participants across three age groups. The results show large improvements in user experience and immersion, while quantitative changes in cultural understanding, perceived learning support, and community engagement are modest and not consistently positive, despite rich qualitative accounts of heightened awareness of local history and community life. Participants’ narratives highlight a reciprocal scaffolding dynamic, in which younger visitors provide digital assistance and older residents contribute local knowledge, as well as strong perceptions of co-creation with community hosts. These findings suggest that a low-cost, participatory ARG can effectively reduce on-site narrative fragmentation and foster emotionally engaging, intergenerational experiences, but that deeper and more durable cultural learning effects likely require refined measurement and longer-term engagement. The study contributes an integrated design and evaluation framework for rural ARG applications and offers practical guidelines for communities and policymakers seeking inclusive, story-driven models of digital heritage revitalization. Frailty in older adults is a multidimensional syndrome characterized by reduced physiological resilience and heightened vulnerability to adverse outcomes, yet conventional assessments remain largely clinic-based. This study evaluated the feasibility and explanatory utility of smartphone-based digital lifelogs for assessing frailty in community-dwelling older adults. In a prospective observational study, 300 participants (mean age 73.30, SD 5.37 years) from three sites in Seoul, South Korea, used a custom mobile application for two weeks that passively collected sensor-derived gait speed, 30 s sit-to-stand counts, and daily and hourly step counts, alongside self-reported ratings of perceived exertion and subjective health. Frailty Index (FI) scores were computed, and Pearson correlations, hierarchical linear regression, and independent linear regression were applied to examine associations and model explanatory performance. Significant correlations were observed between FI and gait speed, sit-to-stand performance, daily step counts, perceived exertion, and subjective health. Incorporating digital lifelogs significantly improved explained variance in frailty beyond clinical indicators (ΔR2 = 0.183), with gait speed and daily step counts emerging as key predictors. A model including only digital lifelogs also significantly associated with frailty (R2 = 0.288). These findings suggest that smartphone-based lifelogging offers a feasible, practical, and informative method for two-week monitoring and cross-sectional assessment in community settings. This study explores the interconnections between new farming practices, smart agricultural technology, mathematical skills, data-driven decision-making, and community learning in areas commonly affected by drought. Using a statistical method known as Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and data from 320 farmers, the study explores how new farming ideas encourage smart practices that improve math skills. It also demonstrates how smart farming creates an environment where data helps inform decision-making, which benefits community learning. The results indicate that New Theory Agriculture (NT) encourages Smart Agriculture (SA) engagement, thereby facilitating both Mathematical Literacy (ML) and Data-Driven Decision-Making (DD). Engagement in SA is closely linked to improvements in ML, which, in turn, strengthen DD abilities. ML plays a central role by serving as a bridge between SA and DD, which, in turn, directly affects Community Learning Outcomes (CL). The findings show that NT fosters community-level outcomes by first building SA and ML, both of which shape DD and ultimately enhance CL, clarifying the sequence of concept connections. The findings reveal that implementing NT and smart technology in agriculture systematically enhances farmers’ resource management and the evolution of mathematical and data skills beyond formal education. The research demonstrates how cognitive skills, technological participation, and collective learning are linked within the community: NT leads to SA engagement, which develops ML, enables DD, and produces CL. The study discusses implications for community education, digital agriculture policy, and rural capacity development, suggesting that future longitudinal or experimental studies could clarify how these connections change over time. This study empirically analyzed changes in the representation of older adults in Korean digital media from 2020 to 2024. As Korea enters a super-aged society, social perceptions of aging and older adults are rapidly evolving through digital platforms. This study aimed to identify how public discourse about older adults has shifted in emotional tone and thematic structure within online media environments. Approximately 200,000 text data points were collected from news and YouTube comments containing keywords related to older adults. Text mining techniques—including Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and time-series analysis—were applied to examine annual trends and emotional transitions. The findings revealed a clear shift in thematic emphasis from “health,” “care,” and “vulnerability” toward “participation,” “self-management,” and “digital activity.” Negative sentiments decreased (from 58.3% in 2020 to 37.8% in 2024), while positive sentiments increased (from 22.5% to 42.7%). These results indicate that the image of older adults in digital discourse has transformed from that of passive care recipients to active and independent participants in society. The study supports the ongoing policy debate in Korea on redefining the age threshold for “older adults” from 65 to 70 years, emphasizing capability over chronological age. Digital media play a critical role in shaping these changing perceptions, highlighting the need for intergenerational media literacy education and policy interventions that promote inclusive and age-positive communication. Construction projects play a pivotal role in social development, influencing rural and urban communities through their execution and management. The complexity of these projects necessitates effective collaboration among diverse stakeholders to achieve sustainable social outcomes. While Building Information Modeling (BIM) has reshaped collaboration patterns, its influence on the dynamic evolution of stakeholder relationships across project phases remains underexplored. This study proposes a comprehensive analytical framework integrating Social Network Analysis (SNA) and Cognitive Social Structure (CSS) to examine stakeholder collaboration in construction projects. By incorporating a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) for task-level relationship quantification, the framework captures structural and temporal dynamics of collaboration. A novel network model is also developed to assess BIM’s impact on information exchange networks. The framework is empirically validated through a case study, incorporating stakeholder identification, and network analysis across design and construction preparation phases. Key metrics such as network density, centrality, and collaboration frequency are quantified and analyzed. The findings offer actionable insights for enhancing collaborative efficiency and project performance, contributing to socially sustainable and digitally advanced construction management practices. Cancer is one of the biggest health burdens for women in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), with the incidence of breast, cervical and colorectal cancer on the rise. Although preventive measures such as the HPV vaccination and population-based screening are available, access to them remains very unequal. Women in rural, low-income and refugee communities face additional barriers, cultural stigmatisation, low health literacy, gender norms and fragile health systems, leading to delayed diagnoses and poorer outcomes. This review summarises the results of 724 peer-reviewed publications to assess the current situation of cancer screening in MENA and Mediterranean countries. The studies were classified into four dimensions: cancer type (breast, cervical, colorectal), behavioural constructs (awareness, uptake, education), vulnerability factors (e.g., migrants, refugees, low-literacy groups), and geography (indigenous MENA populations versus diaspora and Mediterranean immigrant communities). The results show large inequalities in access and participation due to fragmented policies, socio-cultural resistance and infrastructure gaps. Nevertheless, promising approaches are emerging: community-led outreach, mobile screening programmes, AI-assisted triage and culturally appropriate digital health interventions. Comparisons between the local and diaspora populations make it clear that systemic and cultural barriers persist even in well-equipped facilities. Closing the screening gap requires a culturally sensitive, digitally enabled and policy aligned approach. Key priorities include engaging religious and community leaders, promoting men’s engagement in women’s health and securing sustainable funding. With coordinated action across all sectors, MENA countries can build inclusive screening programmes that reach vulnerable women and reduce preventable cancer mortality. Full article

While previous research suggests that innovation capability can enhance sustainable operational performance in sustainable supply chain management practices, empirical insights into the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain limited. Drawing on dynamic capability theory, this study investigates how innovation capability influences sustainable operational performance within the context of Alternative Food Networks (AFNs). Utilizing matched survey data and objective performance metrics from 276 fruit and vegetable preserving and specialty food manufacturing firms in China, the study employed Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with bootstrapping techniques to test the mediating roles of business platforms and community building. The findings reveal that novelty-centered innovation capability has a significant positive effect on sustainable operational performance, with business platforms serving as a partial mediator in this relationship. In contrast, value-centered community building neither directly influences sustainable operational performance nor mediates the effect of innovation capability. Furthermore, the mediating effect of business platforms is found to be stronger than that of community building. This research presents a novel empirical framework that distinguishes the operational effectiveness of digital platforms in social community building within AFNs, providing managers with a strategic roadmap for prioritizing innovation investments to achieve sustainability.
