This qualitative study examines how culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) and transformative learning are fostered in higher education when structured reflection, dialogic engagement, and feedback are intentionally embedded in teacher education coursework. Drawing on data from two university courses—one undergraduate course for preservice teachers and one graduate course for in-service educators (n = 44)—the study explores how equity-focused instructional design supports development toward inclusive, globally informed practice. Data sources included student reflective writing, an anonymous pre- and post-semester survey aligned with InTASC dispositions, instructor reflexive journals, peer observation reports, and course feedback artifacts. Of the 44 enrolled participants, 39 completed the pre-survey and 19 completed the post-survey; survey results were analyzed descriptively at the group level because responses were anonymous and could not be matched across time. Analysis followed Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis procedures, with trustworthiness strengthened through triangulation, peer debriefing, member checking with a subset of participants, and reflexive journaling. Findings revealed seven interconnected themes demonstrating how reflective writing, critical scholarship, multimedia exemplars, dialogic feedback, and iterative course design supported movement from awareness toward equity-oriented pedagogical praxis. Four overarching outcomes were especially salient: (a) expanded understandings of CRP as justice-oriented praxis; (b) increased capacity to identify and interrogate personal and systemic bias; (c) stronger connections between global and intercultural perspectives and locally grounded teaching commitments; and (d) reported pedagogical shifts toward more inclusive, equity-centered practice. Survey findings indicated a group-level shift from Agree toward Strongly Agree across equity-oriented dispositions, suggesting strengthened professional commitments while warranting cautious interpretation given unmatched responses and post-survey attrition. Comparative analysis also highlighted cohort-differentiated developmental trajectories, underscoring the importance of scaffolded, context-responsive approaches in equity-focused teacher education. Overall, the study demonstrates how intentional instructional design can position reflection as an ethical and professional stance that supports equity, inclusion, and global readiness across educator career stages. In early childhood initial teacher education, a growing number of mature-aged students with diploma qualifications and years of professional experience are undertaking their early childhood teacher degrees through online modes. Given the national staff shortage of early childhood teachers and the important role of higher education in professional development, it is crucial to support these students’ success in their online learning. Drawing on the critical reflection theory and the notions of “reflection-in-action” and “reflection-on-action”, this autoethnographic study examines a university lecturer’s perspective on the challenges of teaching mature-aged students in online Bachelor of Early Childhood Education programs. Four themes have been identified from the current study: the need for step-by-step technical support for the online learning system; acknowledgment of students’ practical experience contributes to online tutorial classrooms; the need for guidance for ethical and responsible use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in class discussions; and interactive dialogic guidance to support their assessment preparation. This study also included specific pedagogical adaptations to support these students, including offering technical support to assist mature-aged students in transitioning to university study, drawing on students’ professional knowledge to promote active engagement, providing interactive guidance to support understanding of assignment instructions, integrating open discussions about the use of GenAI in online class activities, and asking follow-up questions to encourage critical thinking. This study deepens our understanding of how university educators support mature-aged ECE students in their online learning through tailored pedagogical adaptations that align with their unique needs. This article describes the use of dialogue, through the format of critical conversations, as a creative and reflective anti-racist tool to develop understanding of departmental values of anti-racism, equity and social justice with colleagues across academic, technical, and leadership roles. The project focused on the development and facilitation of spaces for dialogue between staff members employed in an education department in a university in a city in the Southwest of England. Making use of concepts from Smith and Lander’s critical pedagogy and critical race theory as well as philosophy for children (P4C), we developed a framework used by adult participants to encourage the development of racial literacy through reflexive practice. More than seventy staff members were invited to attend five sessions over a six-month period. During each session, staff members were given pre-prepared stimuli designed to encourage ‘epistemological shudders’ that stimulate dialogue in relation to professional roles and responsibilities of anti-racism, equity and social justice within our working context. Each session was facilitated by two colleagues, given the agency to make use of the stimuli within the sessions in any way they chose, together with their participants. Feedback from each session was non-mandatory and informal. In this article, we capture our reflections on the processes of developing and adapting P4C within a university education department. We believe that this evolving model acts as a valuable tool for dialogues, particularly when attempting to encourage discussion of topics perceived as providing professional risk due to their sensitive and controversial status within education and more broadly. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are increasingly called upon to integrate sustainability across curricula and to prepare students to respond critically and responsibly to complex environmental challenges. While sustainability education is often associated with scientific, technological, or policy-oriented disciplines, the contribution of the humanities remains underexplored, particularly in digitally mediated university teaching. This paper argues that ancient texts, approached through the lens of the Environmental Humanities and supported by digital pedagogy, can offer a valuable framework for fostering sustainability literacy in higher education. Drawing on a humanities-based pedagogical model, this article explores how practices such as collaborative close reading, ecocritical discussion, narrative mapping, reflective writing, and digital storytelling can help students connect classical representations of nature, fragility, order, and human responsibility with contemporary ecological concerns. These activities encourage the development of sustainability-related competencies—including critical thinking, ethical reflection, interpretive complexity, and ecological awareness—while also supporting Inner Development Goals such as self-awareness, empathy, relational thinking, and responsible action. Based on a conceptual pedagogical model supported by exploratory qualitative evidence from a small-scale higher education course, this paper suggests that digital pedagogy can make sustainability learning in the humanities more dialogic and reflective. In doing so, this article proposes a practice-based pedagogical framework that may help Higher Education Institutions explore ways of embedding sustainability meaningfully beyond traditionally environmental fields. This article’s primary contribution is therefore pedagogical: it presents a humanities-based model for sustainability education while using exploratory qualitative evidence from one course context to illustrate how such a model may support interpretive, ethical, and sustainability-oriented learning. This paper examines how mathematics can be approached in the context of Adult Learning and education for older adults. Senior Education in university settings can become a highly motivating, engaging, and meaningful experience for senior learners. Drawing on our teaching practice at the Senior Classroom Program of Pablo de Olavide University (Spain), this study analyzes how andragogical principles such as autonomy, relevance, life experience, and intrinsic motivation can shape powerful learning environments for senior learners (i.e., over 50 years old). By focusing on real-world connections and on historical or philosophical perspectives, the teaching of mathematics may become not only more accessible but also intellectually stimulating, particularly when the classroom climate is supportive and inclusive. From this perspective, mathematical content, often perceived as abstract or disconnected from reality, can be approached as a resource for critical reflection, personal growth, and intergenerational dialog. Our analysis suggests that mathematics does not necessarily constitute a barrier for senior learners; under appropriate pedagogical conditions, it may instead function as a bridge to lifelong learning, fostering curiosity about how the surrounding world works and encouraging engagement with meaningful real-life problems. The purpose of this article is to present a systematic reflection on my experience teaching international English as a Second Language (ESL) students about Indigenous rights and reconciliation in a year-long university ESL course in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. Teaching materials and activities originally aimed to engage students in a pre-political form of intercultural citizenship engagement with the historical struggles and contemporary realities of Indigenous communities in Canada. Over a six-week period, I engaged in a journaling process to (1) explore the opportunities and challenges of teaching this topic in an online course environment and (2) reflect on my attempts to support and challenge students to critically examine their views and assumptions about cultural diversity in Canada and within their own cultural contexts. A qualitative analysis of the reflective notes revealed that students’ engagement with the course activities designed for this theme was limited. While students completed all required tasks, their discussions and artifacts suggest that engaging with reconciliation from a distance constitutes a complex demand for their intercultural learning. This complexity was reflected in students’ reliance on surface-level engagement rather than sustained critical or dialogic exploration. These findings raise questions about the pedagogical framing of the activities, the temporal and experiential distance of the learning context, and the role these factors may have played in constraining students’ ability to meaningfully engage with reconciliation as a lived and ethically charged process. Drawing on scholarship addressing the ethical challenges of the teacher role and positionality in teaching sensitive topics within intercultural citizenship education (ICE), this article concludes with a reflexive discussion of instructional intentions, ethical tensions, and design considerations that may inform future intercultural citizenship pedagogy in similarly constrained teaching and learning contexts. Artificial intelligence (AI) has reshaped contemporary approaches to teaching, assessment, and feedback. Most AI systems provide reactive feedback, offering instant answers that reduce learners’ cognitive engagement and sense of agency. In contrast, Mili was developed as a proactive pedagogical intelligence that asks guiding questions and encourages learners to construct their own responses. Through this design, feedback becomes a process of learning rather than an evaluative mechanism. Mili is a Hebrew-language educational chatbot grounded in principles of dialogic feedback, pedagogical mediation, and literacy resilience. Its goal is to create a metacognitive literacy dialogue in which questions replace answers and learning becomes an act of reflection and self-inquiry. The development followed a Design-Based Research approach involving iterative cycles of design, training, and testing. At each stage, pedagogical prompts were crafted to simulate authentic teacher–learner dialogue, including clarifying questions, pedagogical delay, and emotional reinforcement. This process enabled an exploration of how AI can mediate feedback that stimulates deeper cognitive engagement. The resulting model demonstrates proactive dialogic feedback in which AI does not simply respond but initiates reflective dialogue. Simulated interactions with Mili reveal how such feedback supports the three dimensions of literacy resilience: linguistic-cognitive, metacognitive, and emotional. Mili represents a conceptual shift in AI-based feedback, moving from response to process, from outcome to mediation, and from reactive AI to learning-generative AI. The study makes a theoretical contribution by articulating a model of pedagogically mediated AI and a practical contribution by developing a feedback tool that fosters inquiry, reflection, and literacy resilience in learners and teachers. This study examines how psychological safety (PS) relates to employees’ innovation commitment (IC) in private higher education institutions (HEIs) in Egypt by specifying a learning-based mechanism and two enabling boundary conditions. Drawing on organizational learning theory and commitment research, we surveyed 405 academic and administrative staff (faculty members, teaching assistants, and administrators) across six private universities using validated multi-item measures and analyzed the proposed moderated-mediation model using PLS-SEM (SmartPLS 4), alongside procedural checks to mitigate common method bias. Results indicate that psychological safety is positively associated with knowledge sharing (KS) and innovation commitment, and that knowledge sharing partially mediates the relationship between psychological safety and innovation commitment. The findings further show that transformational leadership (TL) strengthens the positive association between psychological safety and knowledge sharing, while digital readiness (DR) strengthens the positive association between knowledge sharing and innovation commitment. The study contributes by clarifying when psychologically safe climates are most likely to be linked to innovation commitment through day-to-day exchange behaviors and by identifying leadership and digital capability conditions that amplify these relationships in private HEIs. Practically, the results underscore the value of institutionalizing psychologically safe dialog, developing transformational leadership behaviors, and investing in digital infrastructure and skills to make knowledge flows more actionable for innovation-related persistence. This study explored dynamic assessment (DA) of writing in a linguistically and culturally diverse context. Drawing on conceptualizations of DA and ecological languaging competencies (ELC), an ELC-based Loop Pedagogy was designed and adapted in a primary English language teaching (ELT) classroom aiming to foster ongoing development of a dynamic, dialogic, and differentiated assessment approach. A mixed methods research design was adopted with data sources including questionnaires, lesson observations, interviews, and documents/artifacts of student works. Research findings indicated that with optimized choices of learning, timely scaffolding, personalized written feedback, as well as a caring and supportive environment, students with diverse learning needs improved their writing abilities, enhanced their language awareness, and increased their positive affect toward writing activities. Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems typically inherit biases from their training data, leading to discriminatory outcomes that undermine equity and inclusion. This issue is particularly significant when popular Generative AI (GAI) applications are used in educational contexts. To respond to this challenge, the study evaluates the effectiveness of dialogic reflection-based training for educators in identifying and mitigating biases in AI. Furthermore, it considers how these sessions contribute to the advancement of algorithmic justice and inclusive practices. A key component of the proposed training methodology involved equipping educators with the skills to design inclusive prompts—specific instructions or queries aimed at minimizing bias in AI outputs. This approach not only raised awareness of algorithmic inequities but also provided practical strategies for educators to actively contribute to fairer AI systems. A qualitative analysis of the course’s Moodle forum interactions was conducted with 102 university professors and graduate students from diverse regions of the Dominican Republic. Participants engaged in interactive activities, debates, and practical exercises addressing AI bias, algorithmic justice, and ethical implications. Responses were analyzed using Atlas.ti across five categories: participation quality, bias identification strategies, ethical responsibility, social impact, and equity proposals. The training methodology emphasized collaborative learning through real case analyses and the co-construction of knowledge. The study contributes a hypothesis-driven model linking dialogic reflection, bias awareness, and inclusive teaching, offering a replicable framework for ethical AI integration in higher education. This qualitative comparative case study examines how culturally grounded philosophies of education shape the teaching and learning of reading in two cross-cultural contexts—an Aboriginal Australian classroom and urban Chinese elementary schools. Drawing on interpretive and reflexive methodologies, it investigates how Aboriginal and Confucian epistemologies influence literacy practices and how these practices align with or resist dominant, decontextualized models of reading instruction. Data sources include classroom observations, reading assessments, teacher interviews, and researcher reflections. Conceptually framed by Gadamer’s hermeneutics, Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital, Habermas’s typology of knowledge, and the Caribbean concept of overstanding, this research finds that Aboriginal literacy is embedded in relational, land-based knowledge systems, whereas Chinese literacy instruction reflects moral discipline and social hierarchy rooted in Confucian traditions. This study introduces overstanding as a pedagogical stance that foregrounds ethical engagement, cultural respect, and mutual understanding. By challenging universalist models of literacy, this research offers a framework for developing dialogical, culturally responsive, and equity-oriented reading practices. Full article

As conversational artificial intelligence (CAI), including smart speakers, social robots, and dialogic learning apps, becomes increasingly present in children’s lives, its potential to support early mathematical thinking warrants closer attention. While existing research largely concentrates on literacy and language development, the role of CAI in early numeracy remains underexplored. This paper examines how voice-based CAI might contribute to informal mathematical thinking in early childhood. Adopting a conceptual lens, this paper synthesises existing theory and research to examine the potential roles of CAI in early mathematical learning. Grounded in sociocultural theory and dialogic pedagogy, this paper positions CAI as a potential mediator of early mathematical thinking through responsive dialogue. Four interrelated dimensions (child agency, cognitive scaffolding, mathematical language quality, and responsiveness and timing) are identified as a conceptual lens for evaluating how dialogue-based interactions with CAI may support or constrain young children’s mathematical thinking. Rather than framing CAI as a direct teaching tool, this paper explores its potential role as a dialogic partner in play-based numeracy and inquiry. The framework contributes to early mathematics education by highlighting both the promise and the limitations of CAI, offering guidance for research, technology design, and educational practice. It underscores the need for intentional, ethically informed integration of CAI that approximates the qualities of human dialogue while acknowledging current constraints in real-world use. This entry is based on the premise that pressing issues of climate change, social injustice, and post-COVID practices appear to have superseded some essential values of architectural and design pedagogy, leading to improvements in content that may be offset by a loss of focus on the core curriculum. The entry reimagines architectural pedagogy by arguing for a transformative shift from traditional product-based education to a process-oriented, inquiry-driven approach that cultivates critical thinking and empirical making, predicated upon experiential learning. It aims to integrate rigorous critical inquiry into both studio-based and lecture-based settings, thus critiquing assumed limitations of conventional approaches that prioritise final outcomes over iterative design processes, dialogue, and active engagement. Employing a comprehensive qualitative approach that incorporates diverse case studies and critical reviews, the analysis is divided into two main threads: one that places emphasis on the studio environment and another that focuses on lecture-based courses. Within these threads, the analysis is structured around a series of key themes central to experiential learning, each of which concludes with a key message that synthesises the core insights derived from case studies. The two threads instigate the identification of aligned areas of emphasis which articulate the need for active engagements and reflection, for bridging theory and practice, and for adopting interdisciplinary and experiential approaches. Conclusions are drawn to establish guidance for a future direction of a strengthened and pedagogically enriched architectural education. Full article

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education offers novel opportunities to enhance critical thinking while also posing challenges to independent cognitive development. In particular, Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI) in education aims to enhance human experience by providing a supportive and collaborative learning environment. Rather than replacing the educator, HCAI serves as a tool that empowers both students and teachers, fostering critical thinking and autonomy in learning. This study investigates the potential for AI to become a collaborative partner that assists learning and enriches academic engagement. The research was conducted during the 2024–2025 winter semester within the Pedagogical and Teaching Sufficiency Program offered by the Audio and Visual Arts Department, Ionian University, Corfu, Greece. The research employs a hybrid ethnographic methodology that blends digital interactions—where students use AI tools to create artistic representations—with physical classroom engagement. Data was collected through student projects, reflective journals, and questionnaires, revealing that structured dialog with AI not only facilitates deeper critical inquiry and analytical reasoning but also induces a state of flow, characterized by intense focus and heightened creativity. The findings highlight a dialectic between individual agency and collaborative co-agency, demonstrating that while automated AI responses may diminish active cognitive engagement, meaningful interactions can transform AI into an intellectual partner that enriches the learning experience. These insights suggest promising directions for future pedagogical strategies that balance digital innovation with traditional teaching methods, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of education. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of integrating reflective practices and adaptive frameworks to support evolving student needs, ensuring a sustainable model. Full article

Background/Objectives: The integration of AI chatbots in nursing education, particularly in simulation-based learning, is advancing rapidly. However, there is a lack of structured evaluation models, especially to assess AI-generated simulations. This article introduces the AI-Integrated Method for Simulation (AIMS) evaluation framework, a dual-phase evaluation framework adapted from the FAITA model, designed to evaluate both prompt design and chatbot performance in the context of nursing education. Methods: This simulation-based study explored the application of an AI chatbot in an emergency planning course. The AIMS framework was developed and applied, consisting of six prompt-level domains (Phase 1) and eight performance criteria (Phase 2). These domains were selected based on current best practices in instructional design, simulation fidelity, and emerging AI evaluation literature. To assess the chatbots educational utility, the study employed a scoring rubric for each phase and incorporated a structured feedback loop to refine both prompt design and chatbox interaction. To demonstrate the framework’s practical application, the researchers configured an AI tool referred to in this study as “Eval-Bot v1”, built using OpenAI’s GPT-4.0, to apply Phase 1 scoring criteria to a real simulation prompt. Insights from this analysis were then used to anticipate Phase 2 performance and identify areas for improvement. Participants (three individuals)—all experienced healthcare educators and advanced practice nurses with expertise in clinical decision-making and simulation-based teaching—reviewed the prompt and Eval-Bot’s score to triangulate findings. Results: Simulated evaluations revealed clear strengths in the prompt alignment with course objectives and its capacity to foster interactive learning. Participants noted that the AI chatbot supported engagement and maintained appropriate pacing, particularly in scenarios involving emergency planning decision-making. However, challenges emerged in areas related to personalization and inclusivity. While the chatbot responded consistently to general queries, it struggled to adapt tone, complexity and content to reflect diverse learner needs or cultural nuances. To support replication and refinement, a sample scoring rubric and simulation prompt template are provided. When evaluated using the Eval-Bot tool, moderate concerns were flagged regarding safety prompts and inclusive language, particularly in how the chatbot navigated sensitive decision points. These gaps were linked to predicted performance issues in Phase 2 domains such as dialog control, equity, and user reassurance. Based on these findings, revised prompt strategies were developed to improve contextual sensitivity, promote inclusivity, and strengthen ethical guidance within chatbot-led simulations. Conclusions: The AIMS evaluation framework provides a practical and replicable approach for evaluating the use of AI chatbots in simulation-based education. By offering structured criteria for both prompt design and chatbot performance, the model supports instructional designers, simulation specialists, and developers in identifying areas of strength and improvement. The findings underscore the importance of intentional design, safety monitoring, and inclusive language when integrating AI into nursing and health education. As AI tools become more embedded in learning environments, this framework offers a thoughtful starting point for ensuring they are applied ethically, effectively, and with learner diversity in mind.
