HgCdSe has recently been proposed as a potential alternative material to HgCdTe for fabricating high-performance infrared detectors. This work presents a study on the growth of high-crystalline-quality HgCdSe materials on GaSb (211)B substrates via molecular beam epitaxy and demonstration of the first prototype HgCdSe-based mid-wave infrared detectors. By optimizing the MBE growth parameters, and especially the thermal cleaning process of the GaSb substrate surface prior to epitaxial growth, high-quality HgCdSe material was achieved with a record XRD full width at half maximum of ~65 arcsec. At a temperature of 77 K, the mid-wave infrared HgCdSe n-type material demonstrated a minority carrier lifetime of ~1.19 µs, background electron concentration of ~2.2 × 1017 cm−3, and electron mobility of ~1.6 × 104 cm2/Vs. The fabricated mid-wave infrared HgCdSe photoconductor presented a cut-off wavelength of 4.2 µm, a peak responsivity of ~40 V/W, and a peak detectivity of ~1.2 × 109 cmHz1/2/W at 77 K. Due to the relatively high background electron concentration, the detector performance is lower than that of state-of-the-art low-doped HgCdTe counterparts. However, these preliminary results indicate the great potential of HgCdSe materials for achieving next-generation IR detectors on large-area substrates with features of lower cost and larger array format size. This study aimed to evaluate and optimize the effects of three auxin types—indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)—applied at four concentrations (1000, 3000, 5000, and 8000 ppm) on the rooting performance of Photinia × fraseri Dress. stem cuttings. The experiment was conducted under controlled greenhouse conditions using a sterile perlite medium. Rooting trays were placed on bottom-heated propagation benches maintained at a set temperature of 25 ± 2 °C to stimulate root formation. However, the actual rooting medium temperature—measured manually every four days from the perlite zone using a calibrated thermometer—ranged between 18 °C and 22 °C, with an overall average of approximately 20 ± 2 °C. The average values of these root-zone temperatures were used in the statistical analyses. Rooting percentage, root number, root length, callus formation, and mortality rate were recorded after 120 days. In addition to classical one-way ANOVA, response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to model and optimize the interactions between auxin type, concentration, and temperature. The results revealed that 5000 ppm IBA significantly enhanced rooting performance, yielding the highest rooting percentage (85%), average root number (5.80), and root length (6.30 cm). RSM-based regression models demonstrated strong predictive power, with the model for rooting percentage explaining up to 92.79% of the total variance. Temperature and auxin concentration were identified as the most influential linear factors, while second-order and interaction terms—particularly T·ppm—contributed substantially to root length variation. These findings validate IBA as the most effective exogenous auxin for the vegetative propagation of Photinia × fraseri Dress. and provide practical recommendations for optimizing hormone treatments. Moreover, the study offers a robust statistical modeling framework that can be applied to similar propagation systems in woody ornamental plants. Full article

In the context of increasing demand for sustainable floriculture, this study evaluated the effects of salicylic acid (SA) on phenotypic traits of poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd.). A factorial experiment was conducted in a commercial glasshouse using rooted poinsettia cuttings treated with three SA concentrations (10−3, 10−4, 10−5 M) applied via foliar or root application. Morphological parameters, colorimetric traits (CIELAB), canopy development, and biomass accumulation were assessed throughout the cultivation cycle. SA had no significant influence on the plant height, leaf number, or biomass of stems, leaves, and roots. However, notable phenotypic changes were observed. Foliar applications, particularly at 10−5 M, induced visible changes in leaf and bract color, including reduced brightness, saturation, and red pigmentation, especially in newly developed tissues. Conversely, root applications had milder effects and were generally associated with a more stable bract color. The 10−4 M root treatment promoted greater bract surface and color saturation. Canopy expansion and dry matter accumulation were also influenced by SA in a dose- and method-dependent manner, with high-dose foliar treatments (10−3 M) exerting suppressive effects. These findings suggest that the application mode and concentration of SA are critical in modulating ornamental quality traits, with low-to-moderate doses—particularly via root application—offering promising strategies to enhance plant performance in sustainable poinsettia cultivation. Background: The increased incidence of malignant melanoma is observed in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Methods: The anti-proliferative effects of carbidopa and rasagiline on four human malignant melanoma cell lines (A375, SK-MEL28, FM55P and FM55M2) were determined in MTT assay. The interaction profiles of rasagiline in combinations with cisplatin (CDDP) and mitoxantrone (MTX) in four human melanoma cell lines (A375, SK-MEL28, FM55P and FM55M2) were assessed by means of the isobolographic analysis in the MTT test; Results: Rasagiline, but not carbidopa, produced clear-cut anti-proliferative effects on various melanoma cell lines. The median inhibitory concentrations (IC50 values) of rasagiline in the MTT were 280.69 µM for A375, 402.89 µM for SK-MEL28, 349.44 µM for FM55P, and 117.45 µM for FM55M2, respectively. The experimentally-derived selectivity index for rasagiline ranged from 8.22 to 28.18. Flow cytometry assay revealed, in two melanoma cell lines (FM55P and A375), a significant increase in the number of cells in the G0/G1 (up to 76.48% and 75.46% for cell lines, respectively), accompanied by a decrease in the percentage of cells in the S phase (decrease to 9.91% and 10.83% for cell lines, respectively), which may indicate potential cytostatic properties of rasagiline. The combinations of rasagiline with CDDP (at the fixed-ratio of 1:1) exerted either antagonistic interactions (p < 0.05) in the A375 and SK-MEL28, or additive interactions, with a tendency toward antagonism in the FM55P and FM55M2 cell lines in the MTT test. In contrast, the combinations of rasagiline with MTX (ratio of 1:1) produced either synergistic interaction (p < 0.05) in the FM55P cell line or additive interactions with a tendency toward synergy in the FM55M2, SK-MEL28, and A375 cell lines in the MTT test. Conclusions: Rasagiline combined with MTX exerted the most desirable synergistic interactions in relation to the anti-proliferative effects in four malignant melanoma cell lines, as assessed isobolographically. In contrast, rasagiline should not be combined with CDDP during the treatment of malignant melanoma due to the antagonistic interactions in the MTT assay. Full article

Complex mechanical systems, such as agricultural combine harvesters, are subjected to dynamic excitations from multiple coupled sources, compromising structural integrity and operational reliability. Disentangling these vibrations to identify dominant sources and quantify their transmission paths remains a significant engineering challenge. This study proposes a robust diagnostic framework to address this issue. We employed a multi-condition vibration test with sequential source activation and an improved Operational Transfer Path Analysis (OTPA) method. Applied to a harvester chassis, the results revealed that vibration energy is predominantly concentrated in the 0–200 Hz frequency band. Path contribution analysis quantified that the “cutting header → conveyor trough → hydraulic cylinder → chassis frame” path is the most critical contributor to vertical vibration, with a vibration acceleration level of 117.6 dB. Further analysis identified the engine (29.3 Hz) as the primary source for vertical vibration, while lateral vibration was mainly attributed to a coupled resonance between the threshing cylinder (58 Hz) and the engine’s second-order harmonic. This study’s theoretical contribution lies in validating a powerful methodology for vibration source apportionment in complex systems. Practically, the findings provide direct, actionable insights for targeted structural optimization and vibration suppression. Full article

In today’s industrial applications, cutting fluids have attained prime importance due to their all-round features, including increase of tool life by lubrication of the tool at the tool–workpiece interface. This study compares the effects of mango seed oil and pongamia oil on cutting force and surface morphology during the turning of AISI 304 steel. The design of experiments was applied using Taguchi’s method with an L9 array of experiments. During the experiment, it was discovered that mango seed and pongamia-based cutting fluid exhibited the lowest contact angles of 22.1° and 24.4°, respectively, at a 97:3 volumetric concentration of deionized water and eco-friendly oil. The use of mango seed oil as a cutting fluid with MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) resulted in the lowest surface roughness of 0.809 µm, compared to 0.921 µm with pongamia-based cutting fluid. The cutting force was reduced by a maximum of 28.68% using mango seed-based cutting fluid, compared to pongamia-based cutting fluid. ANOVA analysis revealed that feed rate had the maximum influence on the optimization of output parameters for mango seed cutting fluid. For pongamia-based cutting fluid, feed rate had the maximum influence on cutting force, while the depth of cut had the strongest influence on surface roughness. Full article

This study focuses on the optimization of valve assemblies in downhole rod pumping units (DRPUs), which remain the predominant artificial lift technology in oil production worldwide. The research addresses the critical issue of premature failures in DRPUs caused by leakage in valve pairs, i.e., a problem that accounts for approximately 15% of all failures, as identified in a statistical analysis of the 2022 operational data from the Uzen oilfield in Kazakhstan. The leakage is primarily attributed to the accumulation of mechanical impurities and paraffin deposits between the valve ball and seat, leading to concentrated surface wear and compromised sealing. To mitigate this issue, a novel valve assembly design was developed featuring a flow turbulizer positioned beneath the valve seat. The turbulizer generates controlled vortex motion in the fluid flow, which increases the rotational frequency of the valve ball during operation. This motion promotes more uniform wear across the contact surfaces and reduces the risk of localized degradation. The turbulizers were manufactured using additive FDM technology, and several design variants were tested in a full-scale laboratory setup simulating downhole conditions. Experimental results revealed that the most effective configuration was a spiral plate turbulizer with a 7.5 mm width, installed without axis deviation from the vertical, which achieved the highest ball rotation frequency and enhanced lapping effect between the ball and the seat. Subsequent field trials using valves with duralumin-based turbulizers demonstrated increased operational lifespans compared to standard valves, confirming the viability of the proposed solution. However, cases of abrasive wear were observed under conditions of high mechanical impurity concentration, indicating the need for more durable materials. To address this, the study recommends transitioning to 316 L stainless steel for turbulizer fabrication due to its superior tensile strength, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. Implementing this design improvement can significantly reduce maintenance intervals, improve pump reliability, and lower operating costs in mature oilfields with high water cut and solid content. The findings of this research contribute to the broader efforts in petroleum engineering to enhance the longevity and performance of artificial lift systems through targeted mechanical design improvements and material innovation. In the context of industrial digitalization, the Industry 5.0 paradigm introduces digital twins as a cutting-edge solution. This study explores the concept of digital twins and their integration with the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), offering insights into how these technologies bring intelligence to industrial settings to drive both process optimization and sustainability. Industrial digitalization connects products and processes, boosting the productivity and efficiency of people, facilities, and equipment. These advancements are expected to yield broad economic and environmental benefits. As connected systems continuously generate data, this information becomes a vital asset, but also introduces new challenges for industrial operations. The work presented in this article aims to demonstrate the possibility of generating advanced tools for process optimization. This, which ultimately impacts the environment and empowers people in the processes, is achieved through data integration and the development of a digital twin using open tools such as NodeRed v4.0.9 and Python 3.13.5 frameworks, among others. The article begins with a conceptual analysis of IIoT and digital twin integration and then presents a case study to demonstrate how these technologies support the principles of the Industry 5.0 framework. Specifically, it examines the requirements for applying the golden batch concept within a biological production environment. The goal is to illustrate how digital twins can facilitate the achievement of quality standards while fostering a more sustainable production process. The results from the case study show that biomaterial concentration was optimized by approximately 10%, reducing excess in an initially overdesigned process. In doing so, this paper highlights the potential of digital twins as key enablers of Industry 5.0—enhancing sustainability, empowering operators, and building resilience throughout the value chain. To address the issues of burr formation, structural deformation, and tearing in the conventional machining of Nomex honeycomb composites, this study aims to clarify the mechanisms by which ultrasonic vibration-assisted cutting enhances machining quality. A multi-scale analysis framework is developed to examine the effects of ultrasonic vibration on fiber distribution, cell-level shear response, and the overall cutting mechanics. At the microscale, analyses show that ultrasonic vibration mitigates stress concentrations, thereby shortening fiber length. At the mesoscale, elastic buckling and plastic yielding models show that ultrasonic vibration lowers shear strength and modifies the deformation. A macro-scale comparison of cutting behavior with and without ultrasonic vibration was conducted. The results indicate that the intermittent contact effect induced by vibration significantly reduces cutting force. Specifically, at an amplitude of 40 μm, the cutting force decreased by approximately 29.7% compared to the condition without ultrasonic vibration, with an average prediction error below 8.6%. Compared to conventional machining, which causes the honeycomb angle to deform to approximately 130°, ultrasonic vibration preserves the original 120° geometry and reduces burr length by 36%. These results demonstrate that ultrasonic vibration effectively reduces damage through multi-scale interactions, offering theoretical guidance for high-precision machining of fiber-reinforced composites. Phonolite is a fine-grained, shallow extrusive rock rich in alkali minerals and containing iron/titanium-bearing minerals. This rock is widely used as a construction material for building exteriors due to its excellent abrasion resistance and insulation properties. However, during the cutting process, approximately 70% of the rock is discarded as tailing. So, this study aims to repurpose tailings from a phonolite cutting and sizing plant into a high-alkali ceramic raw mineral concentrate. To enable the use of phonolite tailings in ceramic manufacturing, it is necessary to remove coloring iron/titanium-bearing minerals, which negatively affect the final product. To achieve this removal, dry/wet magnetic separation processes, along with flotation, were employed both individually and in combination. The results demonstrated that using dry high-intensity magnetic separation (DHIMS) resulted in a concentrate with an Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade of 0.95% and a removal efficiency of 85%. The wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) process reduced the Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade of the concentrate to 1.2%, with 70% removal efficiency. During flotation tests, both pH levels and collector concentration impacted the efficiency and Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade (%) of the concentrate. The lowest Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade of 1.65% was achieved at a pH level of 10 with a collector concentration of 2000 g/t. Flotation concentrates processed with DHIMS achieved a minimum Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade of 0.90%, while those processed with WHIMS exhibited higher Fe2O3 + TiO2 grades (>1.1%) and higher recovery rates (80%). Additionally, studies on flotation applied to WHIMS concentrates showed that collector concentration, pulp density, and conditioning time significantly influenced the Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade of the final concentrate. Independent studies reported metabolic alterations in connective tissues of hernia patients, especially involving collagen fibers, compared to healthy controls. In the present work, we evaluated plasma concentrations of metalloproteinases (MMPs) and lysyl oxidase (LOX), enzymes involved in collagen metabolism, and peptides produced during collagen biosynthesis (PINP, PIIINP, and PIVNP) as potential biomarkers for the estimation of hernia risk. Zymography and ELISA assays were performed with plasma samples of 51 patients with primary or recurrent inguinal hernia and 42 healthy controls. A reduction in PINP (p = 0.007) and a concomitant increase in PIIINP (p < 0.001) were observed in patients. In controls, PINP levels were inversely related to age, whereas in patients PIIINP levels increased with age. Body mass index (BMI) showed a strong positive correlation with PIIINP plasma levels in controls but not in patients (p < 0.001). Moreover, patients with larger lesions had the lowest PINP/PIIINP ratio (p = 0.003). PIVNP collagen did not differ between controls and hernia patients. Plasma MMP-9 was reduced in patients (p = 0.015), while MMP-2 and LOX were unchanged. However, MMP-2 concentrations appeared lower in patients with familial history of hernia compared to those without. In regression analysis, the PINP/PIIINP ratio was inversely related to hernia risk, and a cut-off value of 0.948 was found by ROC analysis which classified hernia patients with a sensitivity of 82.9% and a specificity of 77.1%. In conclusion, our findings identified the PINP/PIIINP ratio as the most relevant molecular predictor of inguinal hernia risk. Full article

With the accelerated development of urban underground spaces, prefabricated tunnel linings have become a research focus due to their advantages in construction efficiency and cost effectiveness. However, issues such as stress concentration at joints and insufficient overall stability hinder their broader application. This study investigates a cut-and-cover prefabricated tunnel project in the Chongqing High-Tech Zone through scale model tests and numerical simulations to systematically compare the mechanical behaviors of cast-in situ linings and three-segment prefabricated linings under surrounding rock loads. The experimental results show that the ultimate bearing capacity of the prefabricated lining is 15.3% lower than that of the cast-in situ lining, with asymmetric failure modes and cracks concentrated near joint regions. Numerical simulations further reveal the influence of joint stiffness on structural performance: when the joint stiffness is 30 MN·m/rad, the bending moment of the segmented lining decreases by 37.7% compared to the cast-in situ lining, while displacement increments remain controllable. By optimising joint pre-tightening forces and stiffness parameters, prefabricated linings can achieve stability comparable to cast-in situ structures while retaining construction efficiency. This research provides theoretical and technical references for the design and construction of open-cut prefabricated tunnel linings. Full article

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is one of the major preventable causes of intellectual disability. This study evaluates the incidence of CH through a newborn screening (NBS) program in eastern Morocco. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used and heel prick blood samples were collected on blotting paper to measure Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) using an immunofluorimetric assay. 4062 newborns were screened (51.3% male, 48.7% female). TSH levels significantly varied by age: newborns sampled before 24 h had a higher median TSH (3.7 µU/mL [0.10–28.90]) compared to those sampled at 24 h or more (2.1 µU/mL [0.10–32.30]; p < 0.001). Using age-specific cut-off values, 18 suspected CH cases were recalled (recall rate: 0.44%). Among the 16 cases who completed confirmatory testing, 4 had transient hyperthyrotropinemia (HTT), characterized by mildly abnormal serum TSH and T4 levels that normalized spontaneously after few months without treatment. Three cases were diagnosed with CH confirmed at birth with markedly elevated serum TSH concentrations and significantly reduced T4 levels. Consequently, the birth prevalence of CH confirmed at birth was 1:1354 live births. The median preanalytical delay was 6 days (IQR: 3–12) and the TSH result turnaround was 8 days (IQR: 5–15), potentially affecting timely intervention. This first report from eastern Morocco confirms the relevance of neonatal screening but highlights delays that must be addressed to enhance early diagnosis and management. Full article

This study investigated how propagation systems, growth regulators, and hormone formulations interactively affect the rooting and subsequent growth of rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus Spenn) cuttings. A three factorial (3 × 2 × 7) experiment was conducted under a fully controlled greenhouse environment, incorporating three soilless propagation systems (mist, float, aeroponics), two rooting hormone formulations (powder and gel-based IBA), and two growth regulators (paclobutrazol and daminozide) at three concentrations each. Significant differences (p < 0.001) were found in shoot height, root length, and number of lateral roots. The float system combined with powder hormone and no retardants achieved the highest shoot height (mean = 16.7 cm), while aeroponics with powder hormone and daminozide 1000 ppm promoted the greatest root branching (mean = 12.2 lateral roots per cutting). Root length was maximized (mean = 15.9 cm) under float systems with daminozide 1000 ppm. High doses of both growth regulators negatively affected all parameters across systems. Post-transplantation monitoring confirmed that cuttings from float and mist systems treated with powder hormone and low or no growth retardants exhibited superior establishment and net growth over 60 days. These findings demonstrate the critical importance of pairing hormone type, regulator concentration, and propagation system, providing actionable protocols for nursery managers aiming to enhance Salvia rosmarinus propagation in commercial practice.
