Long-term stability of dam infrastructure is crucial for flood protection, water resource management, and drinking water supply. In many regions, the increasing impact of climate change and structural aging necessitates advanced monitoring approaches for embankment and gravity dams. PSI has emerged as a valuable technique for detecting surface deformation rates with millimeter precision. This study presents a comprehensive monitoring concept that combines satellite-based PSI analyses with the first operational use of ECRs at dam sites in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany. Over a period of more than two years, ECRs were observed under real-world conditions using Sentinel-1 data. Compared to traditional passive reflectors, ECRs offer improved signal stability and a compact design, making them particularly suitable for confined or sensitive dam environments. The analysis of displacement time series confirms the suitability of ECRs for long-term deformation monitoring in complex dam settings. Intercomparison of two PSI time series demonstrated high internal consistency (correlation > 0.9, RMSE < 1 mm), while validation against in situ measurements confirmed millimeter-level agreement with RMSE values between 2 and 5 mm and correlations up to 0.7. In addition, a dedicated web-based platform was developed to provide processed ECR-based PSI results to dam operators, offering interactive visualizations, time-series access, and standardized downloads. This integration of advanced interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) methods, innovative hardware, and user-oriented service delivery marks a significant step toward operational dam monitoring using satellite remote sensing. Ground-Based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (GB-InSAR) is widely used for geohazard and infrastructure health assessment because it enables high-precision deformation monitoring. However, long-term time series observations often contain phase discontinuities caused by localized deformation with large spatial gradients, which can severely compromise phase unwrapping reliability. To address this limitation, we propose an Adaptive Shortest-Path Network (ASPN) method for GB-InSAR phase unwrapping. A temporal sliding window strategy is used to partition the acquisition stream into processing units. Within each unit, arc quality is quantified by least squares inversion using the mean square error (MSE) and temporal coherence. The unreliable arcs are removed, and the network is then reconnected using Dijkstra’s shortest-path algorithm to improve unwrapping stability and accuracy. The method is evaluated on a corner reflector-controlled deformation dataset and a stope slope dataset. In the controlled experiment, ASPN reduces the root mean square error (RMSE) of cumulative deformation from 1.684 mm to 0.037 mm, representing a 97.8% reduction, while in the stope slope experiment, it reduces the mean phase residual by 30.3% relative to the Delaunay network and by 11.6% relative to APSP. Overall, ASPN provides an efficient dynamic update mechanism and a robust, high-accuracy solution for long-term GB-InSAR time series deformation monitoring. Full article

Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) absolute radiometric calibration relies on point targets with a known radar cross-section (RCS), such as triangular trihedral corner reflectors (TTCRs). Traditionally, radiometric calibration using TTCRs requires precise alignment of the corner reflector (CR) boresight to the radar line-of-sight (LOS), leading to frequent field operations and high labor dependency. In this study, a novel compact bidirectional trapezoidal CR is proposed to eliminate such alignment reorientations. The novel CR adopts three design considerations: a scalene shape to optimize the boresight elevation angle and enhance the peak RCS; a bidirectional configuration with azimuth fine-tuning to align with the radar LOS for both ascending and descending passes; and trapezoidal plate trimming to reduce the volume and weight without sacrificing RCS performance. An in-orbit validation is conducted in Xi’an, China, using the SuperView Neo 2-03 satellite. The results demonstrate that the imaging quality of the bidirectional trapezoidal CRs is comparable to that of conventional TTCRs, with all the parameters meeting system specifications. The radiometric calibration constant of the bidirectional trapezoidal CR differs from that of the conventional TTCR by no more than 0.27 dB, with a total uncertainty of ~0.33 dB (1σ)—demonstrating that it achieves equivalent radiometric calibration accuracy to TTCRs. The experiment confirms the feasibility and engineering applicability of the bidirectional trapezoidal CR for X-band SAR radiometric calibration. Full article

Heliostats constitute essential elements within concentrating solar power (CSP), where their structure, load profiles, and operational environment render wind loads a critical factor in their design considerations, as these loads directly impact the cost of energy generation. The aerodynamics significantly influence wind-induced effects, resulting in considerable variability in wind loads among different heliostat geometries. This study utilizes the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology to systematically examine the aerodynamic behavior of an isolated pentagonal heliostat. Employing the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) equations with an atmospheric boundary layer inlet condition, the investigation focuses on the flow field and wind load characteristics at four representative pitch angles: 0° (stow position), 30°, 60°, and 90°. Findings indicate that the pitch angle exerts a decisive impact on flow separation patterns. Specifically, as the elevation angle decreases, the flow regime shifts from being predominantly influenced by the mirror surface to being governed by the support structure, mediated through an interactive coupling between these components. At the 60° operational pitch angle, the pentagonal heliostat’s distinctive corner geometry induces an asymmetric vortex configuration—characterized by a smaller vortex at the top and a larger one at the bottom—thereby disrupting the conventional vortex distribution observed in symmetric heliostat designs. A further analysis of wind load characteristics indicates that, compared to a quadrilateral heliostat, the pentagonal mirror exhibits a significantly lower Elevation Moment Coefficient, despite a slight increase in the normal force coefficient. This reduction is attributed to a balancing mechanism: the “vortex structure asymmetry” creates an upper-large–lower-small distribution of absolute negative pressure on the support surface, while the “stagnation point position” shift with elevation angle produces an upper-small–lower-large distribution of absolute positive pressure on the reflector. The interaction between these opposing trends minimizes the net pressure differential across the mirror height, thereby contributing to superior overall aerodynamic performance. The reduction in the elevation moment coefficient contributes to enhanced structural wind resistance, thereby improving the overall energy efficiency and economic viability of concentrating solar power. Optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) is a widely used method for measuring optical lengths to backscattering points in optical fibers and integrated optical chips. However, its application for measuring absolute distances in other media, including free space, remains insufficiently studied. This work aims to solve two main challenges in developing a free-space distance measurement method based on OFDR. The first one is the adaptation of the standard OFDR method to air-based measurements, considering the complex and/or atypical composition of the optical line, including the combination of fiber and air, as well as differing chromatic dispersion. The second task is the calibration of the reflectometer to ensure high measurement accuracy. The article proposes a mathematical framework for eliminating the influence of chromatic dispersion, based on signal transformation and the introduction of an equivalent phase of the reference interferometer. The method was verified experimentally. The experimental setup included an OFDR system, a collimator, and a corner reflector movable along a 2-m rail. An important result is the development and testing of a dispersion compensation method, which eliminated peak broadening in the trace as the distance increased, maintaining its width at a level of tens of microns. Through calibration using an interferometric fringe-counting method, a frequency-to-distance conversion coefficient was determined, ensuring measurement accuracy up to 2 μm. Thus, the study demonstrates the feasibility of adapting OFDR for precise distributed distance measurements in free space and in complex or otherwise non-standard structured environments, significantly expanding the application scope of the technology. This study introduces an amplitude-based method that applies Spatially Variant Apodization (SVA) to reduce sidelobes in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. Unlike conventional approaches, the filter is applied only to the amplitude while preserving the original interferometric phase, thereby enabling accurate Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) for dam deformation monitoring in Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterers (StaMPS) software. The SVA filter is integrated as an additional processing step within the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) for the SentiNel Application Platform to Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterers (SNAP2StaMPS) workflow. Filtering is performed in two dimensions (azimuth and range) separately on the In-phase (I) and Quadrature (Q) components of the coregistered data using a Python-based implementation via SNAP-Python (snappy). By recombining the SVA-filtered and original I and Q components, the method modifies only the amplitude while leaving the phase unchanged. The approach is evaluated in a proof-of-concept case study of the Sorpe Dam in Germany, where an Electronic Corner Reflector - C Band (ECR-C) produces sidelobe artifacts that degrade the Sentinel-1 (S-1) descending time series. The results demonstrated a successful integration of SVA filtering into the SNAP2StaMPS framework, achieving sidelobe reduction and improved Persistent Scatterer (PS) detection without compromising phase quality. The number of sidelobe-affected PS decreased by 39.26% after SVA filtering, while the amplitude-based approach preserved the original phase and deformation values, with a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of approximately 0.38 mm. Overall, this novel amplitude-based SVA approach extends the SNAP2StaMPS workflow by reducing strong sidelobes while preserving phase information for dam monitoring at the Sorpe dam site. This paper proposes a compact polarimetric CTLR mode calibration method using only two dihedral reflectors. The method leverages the property that the dihedral scattering matrix is unaffected by double-pass Faraday rotation, effectively eliminating the interference of Faraday rotation on distortion parameter estimation. By selecting any two from four dihedral reflectors rotated at 0°, 22.5°, 45°, and 67.5°, the system distortion parameters can be estimated. To resolve the two-fold solution ambiguity inherent in the estimation process, two ambiguity elimination methods are proposed: Method I selects the solution with equivalent crosstalk magnitude less than 0 dB based on the prior knowledge that the transmit antenna is dominated by right-hand circular polarization; Method II employs cross-validation using different dihedral combinations with distinct product constants, applicable when the prior knowledge does not hold. Through simulation analysis, the algorithm’s sensitivity to receive crosstalk levels, signal-to-noise ratio, and polarization orientation angle shift is evaluated. The results demonstrate that to maintain residual receive imbalance amplitude within ±1 dB, phase within ±10°, and residual equivalent crosstalk below −30 dB, the system received crosstalk must be lower than −25 dB, the signal-to-noise ratio must exceed 35 dB, and polarization orientation angle shift should be controlled within ±1°. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated using fully polarimetric calibrated GaoFen-3 satellite data, achieving root mean square errors of 0.10 dB, 1.13°, and 0.42 dB for amplitude imbalance, phase imbalance, and equivalent crosstalk amplitude, respectively. Comparative analysis demonstrates that the proposed method achieves significantly higher calibration accuracy than existing approaches, with substantial improvements in parameter estimation precision. Accurate extrinsic calibration between radar and camera sensors is essential for reliable multi-modal perception in robotics and autonomous navigation. Traditional calibration methods often rely on artificial targets such as checkerboards or corner reflectors, which can be impractical in dynamic or large-scale environments. This study presents a fully targetless calibration framework that estimates the rigid spatial transformation between radar and camera coordinate frames by aligning their observed trajectories of a moving object. The proposed method integrates You Only Look Once version 5 (YOLOv5)-based 3D object localization for the camera stream with Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) and Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) filtering for sparse and noisy radar measurements. A passive temporal synchronization technique, based on Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) minimization, corrects timestamp offsets without requiring hardware triggers. Rigid transformation parameters are computed using Kabsch and Umeyama algorithms, ensuring robust alignment even under millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar sparsity and measurement bias. The framework is experimentally validated in an indoor OptiTrack-equipped laboratory using a Skydio 2 drone as the dynamic target. Results demonstrate sub-degree rotational accuracy and decimeter-level translational error (approximately 0.12–0.27 m depending on the metric), with successful generalization to unseen motion trajectories. The findings highlight the method’s applicability for real-world autonomous systems requiring practical, markerless multi-sensor calibration. Full article

LuTan-1 (LT-1) is China’s first L-band differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar system, comprising two multi-polarization SAR satellites, LT-1A and LT-1B. The satellite uses differential deformation measurement and interferometric altimetry technology to realize surface deformation monitoring and topographic mapping in designated areas. It has the characteristics of all-weather, all-time, and multi-polarization and can be applied to military and civilian fields. In order to further improve the accuracy of image geometric positioning, this paper analyzes the error sources of geometric positioning for the differential deformation measurement mode (strip 1) of the satellite service. The in-orbit data of three years since the launch (2022–2024) are selected to analyze the positioning accuracy and stability of the uncontrolled plane based on the corner reflector and active calibrator deployed in the calibration field. The experimental results show that the positioning accuracy of the satellite strip 1 image without a control plane meets the requirements of the in-orbit index and remains relatively stable. The geometric precision correction positioning accuracy after error source compensation is better than 3.0 m, providing a favorable support for the subsequent application. Full article

To meet pose-control and vibration-suppression requirements in confined spaces, a compact, noncontact six-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) displacement-sensing method is proposed. The method is based on laser reflection and a position-sensitive detector (PSD) and features an adjustable incidence angle. An adjustable-incidence-angle PSD–corner-cube retro-reflector (CCR) configuration is devised, which reduces the PSD’s spatial footprint to 10.4% of that of a conventional layout. Building on this configuration, an analytical model is derived that maps the target’s 6-DoF displacement to the PSD spot motion as a function of the fixed relative pose between the PSD and the CCR mounted on the target. The model is linearized under the small-angle assumption. Experiments show an accuracy of 5.89 μm for translation within ±1.5 mm and 0.0027° for rotation within ±0.5°. The method couples a compact architecture with high precision and provides both a theoretical basis and an engineering-ready pathway for high-bandwidth pose sensing in confined spaces. Full article

In this work, a radar imagery-based signal processing technique to eliminate dynamic clutter interference in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is proposed. This can be considered an application of a joint communication and sensing telecommunication infrastructure, leveraging a base-station as ground-based radar. The dynamic clutter is considered to be a fast moving road user, such as car, truck, or moped. The proposed technique is suitable in case of a dynamic clutter, such that its Doppler contribute alias and falls over the 0 Hz component. In those cases, a standard low-pass filter is not a viable option. Indeed, an excessively shallow low-pass filter preserves the dynamic clutter contribution, while an excessively narrow low-pass filter deletes the displacement information and also preserves the dynamic clutter. The proposed approach leverages the Time Domain Backprojection (TDBP), a well-known technique to produce radar imagery, to transfer the dynamic clutter from the data domain to an image plane, where the dynamic clutter is maximally compressed. Consequently, the dynamic clutter can be more effectively suppressed than in the range-Doppler domain. The dynamic clutter cancellation is performed by coherent subtraction. Throughout this work, a numerical simulation is conducted. The simulation results show consistency with the ground truth. A further validation is performed using real-world data acquired in the C-band by Huawei Technologies. Corner reflectors are placed on an infrastructure, in particular a bridge, to perform the measurements. Here, two case studies are proposed: a bus and a truck. The validation shows consistency with the ground truth, providing a degree of improvement within respect to the corrupted displacement on the mean error and its variance. As a by-product of the algorithm, there is the capability to produce high-resolution imagery of moving targets. Full article

To address this issue, this study proposes a three-dimensional (3D) deformation measurement method that integrates BDS/GNSS positioning with dihedral corner reflectors (CRs). By incorporating high-precision horizontal positioning results obtained from BDS/GNSS into the radar line-of-sight (LOS) correction process and utilizing ascending and descending Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for joint monitoring, the method achieves millimeter-level- accuracy in measuring vertical deformation at corner reflector sites. At the same time, it enhances the 3D positioning accuracy of BDS/GNSS to the 1 mm level under short-baseline configurations. Based on monitoring stations deployed at the Jinsha River dam site, the proposed deformation fusion monitoring method was validated using high-resolution SAR imagery from Germany’s TerraSAR-X (TSX) satellite. Simulated horizontal and vertical displacements were introduced at the stations. The results demonstrate that BDS/GNSS achieves better than 1 mm horizontal monitoring accuracy and a vertical accuracy of around 5 mm. Interferometric SAR (InSAR) CRs achieve approximately 2 mm in horizontal accuracy and 1 mm in vertical accuracy. The integrated method yields a 3D deformation monitoring accuracy better than 1 mm. This paper’s results show high potential for achieving high-precision deformation observations by fusing BDS/GNSS and dihedral CRs, offering promising prospects for deformation monitoring in reservoir canyon regions. In satellite altimetry calibration, the atmosphere’s integrated water vapor content has been customarily derived through the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), principally over land where the satellite radiometer is not operational. Progressively, several alternative methods have emerged to estimate this wet troposphere component with ground instruments, alternative satellite sensors, and global models. For any ground calibration facility, integration of various approaches is required to arrive at an optimum value of a calibration constituent and in accordance with the strategy of Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRM). In this work, different estimation methods and instruments are evaluated for wet troposphere delays, especially when transponder and corner reflectors are employed at the Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration of the European Space Agency. Evaluation includes, first, ground instruments with microwave radiometers and radiosondes; second, satellite sensors with the Ocean Land Color Instrument (OLCI) and the Sea Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 altimeter, as well as the TROPOMI spectrometer on the Sentinel-5P satellite; and finally with global atmospheric models, such as the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. Along these lines, multi-sensor and redundant values for the troposphere delays are thus integrated and used for the calibration of Sentinel-6 MF and Sentinel-3A/B satellite altimeters. All in all, the integrated water vapor value of the troposphere is estimated with an FRM uncertainty of ±15 mm. In the absence of GNSS stations, it is recommended that the OLCI and SLSTR measurements be used for determining tropospheric delays in daylight and night operations, respectively. Ground microwave radiometers can also be used to retrieve tropospheric data with high temporal resolution and accuracy, provided that they are properly installed and calibrated and operated with site-specific parameters. Finally, the synergy of ground radiometers with instruments on board other Copernicus satellites should be further investigated to ensure redundancy and diversity of the produced values for the integrated water vapor. In synthetic aperture radar (SAR) maritime target detection tasks, corner reflector targets (CRTs) and their arrays can easily interfere with the accurate detection of ship targets, significantly increasing the misdetection rate and false alarm rate of detectors. Current deep learning-based research on SAR maritime target detection primarily focuses on ship targets, while dedicated detection methods addressing corner reflector interference have not yet established a comprehensive research framework. There remains a lack of theoretical innovation in detection principles for such targets. To address these issues, utilizing the prior knowledge of cross-shaped structures exhibited by marine CRTs in SAR images, we propose an innovative cross-shaped bounding box (CSBB) annotation strategy and design a novel dedicated detection network CSBBNet. The proposed method is constructed through three innovative component modules, namely the cross-shaped spatial feature perception (CSSFP) module, the wavelet cross-shaped attention downsampling (WCSAD) module, and the cross-shaped attention detection head (CSAD-Head). Additionally, to ensure effective training, we propose a cross-shaped intersection over union (CS-IoU) loss function. Comparative experiments with state-of-the-art methods demonstrate that our approach exhibits efficient detection capabilities for CRTs. Ablation experiment results validate the effectiveness of the proposed component architectures. Full article

A stable and high-precision autonomous orbit determination scheme for a Low Lunar Orbit (LLO) spacecraft is proposed, leveraging satellite-to-satellite tracking (SST) measurement data and lunar laser ranging data. One satellite orbits around the LLO, while the other satellite orbits around the Distant Retrograde Orbit (DRO). An inter-satellite ranging link is established between the two satellites, while the LLO satellite conducts laser ranging with a Corner Cube Reflector (CCR) on the lunar surface. Both inter-satellite ranging data and lunar laser ranging data are acquired through measurements. By integrating these data with orbital dynamics and employing the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) method, the position and velocity states of the two formation satellites are estimated. This orbit determination scheme operates independently of ground measurement and control stations, achieving a high degree of autonomy. Simulation results demonstrate that the position accuracy of the LLO satellite can reach 0.1 m, and that of the DRO satellite can reach 10 m. Compared to the autonomous orbit determination scheme relying solely on SST measurement data, this proposed scheme exhibits several advantages, including shorter convergence time, higher convergence accuracy, and enhanced robustness of the navigation system against initial orbit errors and orbital dynamic model errors. It can provide a valuable engineering reference for the autonomous navigation of lunar-orbiting satellites. Full article
