The construction sector emphasises circular economy principles that prioritise eco-design strategies, particularly the usage of secondary raw materials. The growing interest in using industrial hemp as a sustainable building material in the construction sector is driven by its versatility. Industrial hemp has been preferential in comparison to other traditional building materials due to its lower global warming impact. Claims regarding the environmental benefits of hemp-containing construction materials based on the single impact category could be misleading; therefore, life cycle assessment (LCA) studies including multiple environmental indicators should be implemented. This study aims to compare two alternative wall designs regarding their environmental impacts. The comparative LCA study for hempcrete and prefabricated walls used in residential buildings was assessed using IPCC and ReCiPe life cycle impact assessment methods. The study highlighted a significant discrepancy depending on the number of environmental indicators considered, as well as between characterised and weighted LCA results. A hempcrete wall was recognised as a slightly (13.63%) better alternative when assessed by the single-issue IPCC method, while its total burden assessed by the ReCiPe method was recognised to be significantly (2.78 times) higher. Based on the results from this case study, regulators could re-evaluate the appropriateness of reporting LCA results solely on the midpoint level, particularly when limited to a single impact indicator, while producers in the construction sector should recognise the threat of greenwashing when reporting using a single impact indicator only. The aim of this study is to analyze the factors that influence consumer referents or reference points and their interaction during the decision-making process, along with the principles of prospect theory in the metaverse with market and retail examples. We conducted an integrative literature review. Consumers’ preference for reference points is determined and structured during the buying process, which can be affected by potential signals and biased decisions. To guide consumers’ shopping experiences and purchasing behavior in the most effective way, marketers and organizations must investigate the factors that influence consumer reference points beyond physical or tangible attributes. Businesses must be adaptable and adapt their strategies to changing consumer preferences based on reference points. Our findings can advance discussions about how reference points are being used in the market by using consumer decision-making claims in the discursive construction of the metaverse. By comprehending this, developers can create better experiences and assist users in navigating virtual risks. Our research aids us in better comprehending the influence of referents on consumer purchasing decisions in the marketing communications field. Numerous opportunities for academic research into consumer reference points have arisen, in which individuals as digital consumers are influenced by the same biases and heuristics that guide their behavior in reality. Highway construction in China has bolstered Chinese claims of having the longest highways in the world, yet it has led to the involuntary relocation and resettlement of millions of people all over China. This study examines the interplay of power relationships in modernity and ethnic cultures. Using interviews with 201 Zhuang ethnic minority people and participant observations from two years in the Southwest of China, this paper presents findings that show both the positive and negative effects of urbanization and modernization as the consequence of highway expansion. By discussing the removal of a religious Sacred Rock which was in the way of the highway construction, the authors reveal the subtleties of the power interplay of majority–minority relations and the meanings of cultures and rituals in the face of modernity. In the process of modernization, highway construction reconstructs new communities while deconstructing the old one. The authors argue that recognizing the meanings of ethnic cultures as defined by ethnic people themselves is the first step to the reconciliation of social relationships between the majority and minority people in created new communities. To enhance social integration, religion has an important role to play in Chinese society. Full article

Corporate environmental claims often neglect the substantial ecological impact of land-use changes. This case study examines the spatial dimension of retail-driven land-use transformation by analyzing supermarket expansion in the Veneto region (northern Italy), with a focus on a large grocery retailer. We evaluated its corporate environmental claims by assessing land consumption patterns from 1983 to 2024 using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The GIS-based methodology involved geocoding 113 Points of Sale (POS—individual retail outlets), performing photo-interpretation of historical aerial imagery, and classifying land-cover types prior to construction. We applied spatial metrics such as total converted surface area, land-cover class frequency across eight categories (e.g., agricultural, herbaceous, arboreal), and the average linear distance between afforestation sites and POS developed on previously rural land. Our findings reveal that 65.97% of the total land converted for Points of Sale development occurred in rural areas, primarily agricultural and herbaceous lands. These landscapes play a critical role in supporting urban biodiversity and providing essential ecosystem services, which are increasingly threatened by unchecked land conversion. While the corporate sustainability reports and marketing strategies emphasize afforestation efforts under their “We Love Nature” initiative, our spatial analysis uncovers no evidence of actual land-use conversion. Additionally, reforestation activities are located an average of 40.75 km from converted sites, undermining their role as effective compensatory measures. These findings raise concerns about selective disclosure and greenwashing, driving the need for more comprehensive and transparent corporate sustainability reporting. The study argues for stronger policy frameworks to incentivize urban regeneration over greenfield development and calls for the integration of land-use data into corporate sustainability disclosures. By combining geospatial methods with content analysis, the research offers new insights into the intersection of land use, business practices, and environmental sustainability in climate-vulnerable regions. The HoReCa (Hotels, Restaurants, and Cafes) sector plays a pivotal role in the economy due to its strong connections with various other industries, including agriculture, food and beverage, construction, packaging, waste management, water, and textiles. Given its broad impact, understanding the perceptions of students—emerging consumers and future professionals—could provide valuable insights for businesses seeking to enhance sustainable practices in ways that resonate with younger generations and improve their competitiveness. However, there is still limited understanding of how students perceive and engage with sustainability in this sector. This study explores student perceptions of sustainability practices within the HoReCa sector, examining their awareness levels, expectations, and behavior. The objective is to assess how effectively current business approaches align with student values regarding sustainability initiatives and identify key factors influencing their engagement. A structured questionnaire was distributed among university students, and the collected data was analyzed using statistical techniques to identify meaningful trends and correlations. Findings revealed a notable disconnect between students’ professed sustainability values and their actual behavior. Primary obstacles included price sensitivity, skepticism toward environmental marketing claims, and insufficient access to clear sustainability information from businesses. Despite supporting sustainable initiatives in principle, students often struggle to translate their values into purchasing decisions. The research suggests that greater business transparency, enhanced sustainability education, and incentive programs could foster increased student engagement. Full article

Green and low-carbon development of supply chains represents a practical approach to addressing climate change and enhancing corporate competitiveness. From the perspective of the relationship between policy subsidies and channel power structures, this paper constructs Stackelberg game models under four different scenarios to conduct theoretical analyses of the optimal strategies, supported by numerical simulations. The research findings reveal the following. (1) Under the product subsidy policy, the enhancement of consumers’ green preference will lead to a green premium, and in the case of the technology subsidy policy, consumers’ green preference will inhibit wholesale prices and retail prices. However, there is a threshold in the manufacturer-led case, and a “green premium” is also claimed when this threshold is exceeded. (2) The effects of the product subsidy policy and the green technology level subsidy policy on prices are opposite, where an increase in the product subsidy will increase the wholesale price and retail price, while an increase in the green technology level subsidy will reduce the wholesale price. The technology subsidy policy has a more significant effect on the promotion of green technology. (3) The power of supply chain channels will directly affect corporate profits, and the leader of the supply chain often has higher profits. Compared with product subsidies, technology subsidies can inhibit the channel power of retailers. Full article

The construction of a fence in the sea made of bamboo sticks along the coastal areas of Tangerang, Indonesia, caused controversy and many public debates in most Indonesian media. The case is, however, not unique. It provides a means to pose three questions related to the following topics: (1) which controversies and contradictions between formal procedures and informal practices related to land and sea rights exist; (2) which values and perceptions of the involved stakeholders play a role in these controversies and contradictions; and (3) which kinds of boundary work or boundary objects could resolve these controversies and contradictions. The theoretical embedding for the subject lies in the theories of territory and space on the one hand and formal institutional models of land and sea on the other. The analytical model used to evaluate the controversies and contradictions is McKinsey’s 7S model, while the data used are extracted from journalistic public media reports and social media. The results show a significant discrepancy between the values connected to formal and informal territorial claims, as well as a lack of enforcement capacity to address this discrepancy. Instead, the policy response exhibits an excessive and uncontrolled discretionary space for all stakeholders to pursue their own interests. The theoretical novelty is that institutional models governing territorial sea and land rights, restrictions and responsibilities need to be aligned and connected based on detecting where and how the values of affected stakeholders can be harmonized, rather than enforcing a unilateral system of values of disconnected systems (of either land or sea). The policy implementation implications are to create stricter procedural steps when providing building permits in coastal areas, with better enforcement and stricter control. Soft governance campaigns should raise awareness of what is allowed and required for coastal building permits and reclamations. Additionally, there could be quicker, more thorough inspections of emerging or hidden practices of non-approved fencing and non-approved occupation of coastal land and sea. Full article

From the mid-Ming to early Qing dynasties, Mount Jizu 雞足山 in Yunnan achieved unexpected prominence within China’s Buddhist sacred landscape—an event of regional, national, and transnational significance. Employing an explicit comparative lens that juxtaposes Jizu with China’s core-region sacred sites like Mount Wutai and Emei, this study investigates the timing, regional dynamics, institutional mechanisms, and causal drivers behind the rapid ascent. Rejecting teleological narratives, it traces the mountain’s trajectory through four developmental phases to address critical historiographical questions: how did a peripheral Yunnan site achieve national prominence within a remarkably compressed timeframe? By what mechanisms could its sacred authority be constructed to inspire pilgrimages even across vast distances? Which historical agents and processes orchestrated these transformations, and how did the mountain’s symbolic meaning shift dynamically over time? Departing from earlier scholarship that privileges regional and secular frameworks, this work not only rebalances the emphasis on religious dimensions but also expands the analytical scope beyond regional confines to situate Mount Jizu within national and transnational frameworks. Eventually, by analyzing the structural, institutional, and agential dynamics—spanning local, imperial, and transnational dimensions—this study reveals how the mountain’s sacralization emerged from the convergence of local agency, acculturative pressures, state-building imperatives, late-Ming Buddhist revival, literati networks, and the strategic mobilization of symbolic capital. It also reveals that Mount Jizu was not a static sacred site but a dynamic arena of contestation and negotiation, where competing claims to spiritual authority and cultural identity were perpetually redefined. Sustainable architectural heritage conservation focuses on preserving historical buildings while promoting environmental sustainability. It involves using eco-friendly materials and methods to ensure that the cultural value of these structures is maintained while minimizing their ecological impact. In this paper, the use of the hydroxyapatite (HAp) in various combinations on masonry samples is presented, with the aim of identifying the ideal solution to be applied to an entire historical building in Banloc monument. The new solution has various advantages: compatibility with historical lime mortars (chemical and physical), increased durability under aggressive environmental conditions, non-invasive and reversible, aligning with conservation ethics, bioinspired material that avoids harmful synthetic additives, preservation of esthetics—minimal visual change to treated surfaces, and nanostructural (determined via SEM and AFM) reinforcement to improve cohesion without altering the porosity. An innovative approach involving hydroxiapatite addition to commercial mortars is developed and presented within this paper. Physico-chemical, mechanical studies, and architectural and economic trends will be addressed in this paper. Some specific tests (reduced water absorption, increased adhesion, high mechanical strength, unchanged chromatic aspect, high contact angle, not dangerous freeze–thaw test, reduced carbonation test), will be presented to evidence the capability of hydroxyapatite to be incorporated into green renovation efforts, strengthen the consolidation layer, and focus on its potential uses as an eco-material in building construction and renovation. The methodology employed in evaluating the comparative performance of hydroxyapatite (HAp)-modified mortar versus standard Baumit MPI25 mortar includes a standard error (SE) analysis computed column-wise across performance indicators. To further substantiate the claim of “optimal performance” at 20% HAp addition, independent samples t-tests were performed. The results of the independent samples t-tests were applied to three performance and cost indicators: Application Cost, Annualized Cost, and Efficiency-Cost-Performance (ECP) Index. This validates the claim that HAp-modified mortar offers superior overall performance when considering efficiency, cost, and durability combined. Full article

With climate change mitigation and carbon emission reduction as global priorities, the expansion of renewable energy has become a core strategy globally. The purpose of this study is to identify trends in key renewable energy technologies, such as solar, wind, geothermal, and water technologies, and to compare and evaluate their competitiveness across leading nations. To this end, we performed trend analyses and both patent and technology portfolio assessments employing indicators such as the number of patents granted, claim count ratio, citation ratio, and patent family ratio on 194,485 granted patents collected from 1975 to 2024, according to International Patent Classification (IPC) codes, for the five major energy powers—the United States, European Union, Japan, China, and Korea. Trend analysis revealed a sharp increase in energy-related patents from 2010, with solar technologies accounting for over 60 percent of the total. Patent portfolio results positioned the United States as the Technology Leader, leading in both activity and quality; China stood out for its quantitative expansion and Europe for its qualitative strengths. Technology portfolio findings show that, although core technologies are shared globally, application-level technologies vary by country, reflecting each nation’s industrial base, policy orientation, and technological maturity. This study delineates priority technology domains, identifies optimal R&D collaboration pathways, and recommends policy levers that accelerate commercialization—enabling policymakers and industry stakeholders to allocate resources strategically and construct balanced technology portfolios aligned with global initiatives such as carbon-neutrality targets and the RE100 commitment. The risks arising from contractual claims in the civil engineering construction industry in South Africa are a concern. Currently, there are no risk mitigation models available for managers to help reduce such risks. A theoretical risk mitigation model was developed from the literature and validated through partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), using primary questionnaire data obtained from 166 respondents drawn from a pool of South African construction industry professionals, including project directors, project managers, supervisors, consultants, and contractors. The descriptive results indicate significant patterns, trends, and distributions of the variables across the three constructs in the study. The PLS-SEM results indicate that factors causing contractual claims risk in civil infrastructure projects have a significant relation to the impact of risk occurrence on these projects, influencing the strategies to be implemented to mitigate such risks. The PLS-SEM results also indicate a significant direct relation between the factors causing contractual claims risk and the strategies to be implemented to mitigate risks, thus implying that the holistic adaptation of the PLS-SEM (risk mitigation model) by construction industry professionals in South Africa should reduce contractual claims risk in civil infrastructure projects. The findings serve as a valuable guide not only to construction industry professionals but also to government agencies such as the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure. Full article

The increasing sophistication and volume of misinformation on digital platforms necessitate scalable, explainable, and semantically granular fact-checking systems. Existing approaches typically treat claims as indivisible units, overlooking internal contradictions and partial truths, thereby limiting their interpretability and trustworthiness. This paper addresses this gap by proposing a novel probabilistic framework that decomposes complex assertions into semantically atomic claims and computes their veracity through a structured evaluation of source credibility and evidence frequency. Each atomic unit is matched against a curated corpus of 11,928 cyber-related news entries using a binary alignment function, and its truthfulness is quantified via a composite score integrating both source reliability and support density. The framework introduces multiple aggregation strategies—arithmetic and geometric means—to construct claim-level veracity indices, offering both sensitivity and robustness. Empirical evaluation across eight cyber misinformation scenarios—encompassing over 40 atomic claims—demonstrates the system’s effectiveness. The model achieves a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.037, Brier Score of 0.042, and a Spearman rank correlation of 0.88 against expert annotations. When thresholded for binary classification, the system records a Precision of 0.82, Recall of 0.79, and an F1-score of 0.805. The Expected Calibration Error (ECE) of 0.068 further validates the trustworthiness of the score distributions. These results affirm the framework’s ability to deliver interpretable, statistically reliable, and operationally scalable misinformation detection, with implications for automated journalism, governmental monitoring, and AI-based verification platforms. More recently, the concept of organoid intelligence (OI) has emerged, proposing that these constructs could evolve to support learning, memory, or even sentience. While this perspective has driven enthusiasm in the field of organoid research and suggested new applications in fields such as neuromorphic computing, it also introduces significant scientific and conceptual concerns. Current brain organoids lack the anatomical complexity, network organization, and sensorimotor integration necessary for intelligence or sentience. Despite this, claims surrounding OI often rely on oversimplified interpretations of neural activity, fueled by neurorealist and reification biases that misattribute neurophysiological properties to biologically limited systems. Beyond scientific limitations, the framing of OI risks imposing ethical and regulatory challenges based on speculative concerns rather than empirical evidence. The assumption that organoids might possess sentience, or could develop it over time, could lead to unnecessary restrictions on legitimate research while misrepresenting their actual capabilities. Additionally, comparing biological systems to silicon-based computing overlooks fundamental differences in scalability, efficiency, and predictability, raising questions about whether organoids can meaningfully contribute to computational advancements. The field must recognize the limitations of these models rather than prematurely defining OI as a distinct research domain. A more cautious, evidence-driven approach is necessary to ensure that brain organoids remain valuable tools for neuroscience without overstating their potential. To maintain scientific credibility and public trust, it is essential to separate speculative narratives from grounded research, thus allowing for continued progress in organoid studies without reinforcing misconceptions about intelligence or sentience. Fatherhood Practices and Shared Parental Leave: Advancing Gender Equity in Parenting

In this article, we examine the theoretical concept of hybrid masculinities from a praxeological perspective, focusing on fathers as caring parents. Examining the development of parenting practices and parental knowledge exchange, we conducted couple interviews with 42 couples (n = 42, 2021 and 2022) and analyzed how fathers’ and couples’ motivations for sharing parental leave (PL) and childcare allowance (CA) in Austria shape fatherhood practices. All interviewees had claimed CA for a minimum duration of five months. Since infant care has only recently been incorporated into normative constructions of masculinity, our praxeological analysis centers on fathers. By applying the theoretical concept of hybrid masculinities, we examine these practices which are still perceived as “new”. In the couple interviews we conducted, we analyzed the reports and views of both parents, which tended to be more fully expressed when the parents interviewed were in conversation with each other. We applied topic-specific content analysis and Informed Grounded Theory to analyze the empirical data, guided by semi-structured interview protocols and coded with MAXQDA. Our findings indicate that fathers successfully take on and embody caregiving responsibilities. However, they also continue to conform to traditional constructions of masculinity, particularly in their long-term reconciliation of childcare and employment. Considering international PL and CA policies, we discuss the relationship between parents’ dual PL uptake and social sustainability in the transformation of gendered parenting norms and the reduction in gender inequalities. Determining Average Available Workdays for Roadway Construction Projects Using Long-Term Weather Data—A Case Study for Alabama

Construction project durations specified on contracts are influenced by adverse weather conditions such as rainfall and low temperatures. This study aimed to develop an efficient method for determining monthly Average Available Workdays (AAWDs) for roadway construction projects using historical long-term (ten years or more) local weather data. A survey was conducted to understand the status of current practices using weather information for contract time determination by transportation agencies. Excel spreadsheet tools with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programs were developed to process the downloaded long-term weather data with two different formats. Instead of manually processing the short-term (e.g., one–three years) weather data, VBA programs efficiently count for weekends, legal holidays, and adverse weather days as non-workdays each month over the years with weather data (>10 years) and then determine the monthly available workdays (AWDs) and AAWDs. This method was verified using daily records from five completed roadway construction projects. Many contractor-claimed non-workdays due to other factors, not weather-related, that contributed to substantially longer project duration affect the comparison of AWDs determined from nearby weather stations using the developed VBA tools. The method and VBA tools developed were applied to 88 weather stations (10–122 years, average 42 years of data) to determine AAWDs in Alabama, USA, as a case study. Monthly AAWDs in Alabama were grouped into three climate zones: North Region, Central Regions, and South Regions with 185, 193, and 200 AAWDs per year, respectively, with more workdays (17–19 days) in warmer months and fewer (9–11 days) in colder months. The determined AAWDs help both DOTs and construction contractors determine/propose reasonable construction project durations and resolve the construction delay issues. The method and VBA tools can be revised/updated by other DOTs and construction companies for different definitions and thresholds on non-workdays and then efficiently determine AWDs and AAWDs using long-term local weather data.
