While the legal framework in Mozambique in principle provides equal rights to land for women and men, its underlying assumptions imply that customary tenure is patrilineal, that women get access to land through their relationships with men, while men in practice own and control land. This article focuses on matrilineal land institutions in Makhuwa communities in northern Mozambique. It argues that local matrilineal institutions have provided women with transferable rights to land, while men get access to land in various ways within the matrilineal institutional framework. Based on the Land Law of 1997, the Mozambican government in 2015 launched a large-scale land tenure formalisation programme, Terra Segura (“Secure Land”), with World Bank funding. The Mozambican Land Law recognises local community rights to customary land, while Land Law Regulations define the requirements for both community and individual formalisation of such rights. Field data collected in Makhuwa communities, where individual titling was carried out in the period 2019–2023, indicate that both women and men received titles. But what is secured through these individual titles? The article discusses to what extent formalised “secure land tenure” for individuals can weaken women’s land rights and traditional rights to subsistence—provided by matrilineal land institutions over time, across generations. This paper examines how entrenched dichotomies between natural/cultural and tangible/intangible heritage shape conservation policy in contexts where material, ecological, and socio-cultural dimensions are deeply interdependent. Despite calls for more integrated frameworks, limited empirical research examines how such categorical divisions operate within living rural heritage environments or how they align with community perspectives and inform conservation policies. This paper addresses this gap by analysing the persistence of rigid heritage taxonomies in officially designated traditional villages in central rural Greece exploring how heritage officials and residents perceive and value their heritage. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork across six villages—including interviews, focus groups, and consultations with heritage professionals—it demonstrates that these categorical divisions fail to reflect local understandings of heritage as a living socio-ecological system. For residents, ecological conditions, built forms, agricultural practices, and social relations are interdependent and tied to livelihoods, land stewardship, and communal identity. Findings show that the Authorized Heritage Discourse (AHD) reinforces artificial separations that are misaligned with grassroots perceptions and hinder integrated planning. This mismatch has direct implications for sustainability: governance models that fragment nature, culture, and community obscure socio-ecological processes and limit the development of meaningful sustainability strategies. By foregrounding experiential and affective dimensions of heritage, the paper advances debates on community-centred and context-responsive heritage management. It reframes rural heritage as a co-produced, evolving system of material, social, and ecological relations, positioning rural landscapes as critical arenas for addressing sustainability challenges and offering new empirical insights into an underexplored dimension of heritage research. The study further advocates for governance approaches that embed local ontologies and lived knowledge into policy and practice, fostering more inclusive, resilient, and socio-ecologically grounded heritage frameworks capable of supporting long-term sustainable development. The Congo Basin peatlands, the world’s largest tropical peatland complex, are critical for global carbon storage yet remain poorly understood from a human dimension’s perspective. This study explores the perceptions, lifestyles, and knowledge systems of Indigenous Peoples and local communities around Lake Tumba, Democratic Republic of Congo, to identify practices supporting peatland conservation. Using a mixed-methods approach—household surveys (n = 320), focus groups, and statistical analyses including chi-square tests and Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA)—the study reveals a predominantly Indigenous agrarian society with limited formal education and strong reliance on peatlands for food (93.7%), construction materials (79.0%), and medicines (75.9%). While regulating services such as carbon storage were seldom recognized, traditional ecological knowledge was evident in sacred species protection, ritual plant and animal uses, and intergenerational knowledge transfer, mainly father-to-son. However, 95.3% of respondents cited religion as the main barrier to this transmission. MCA confirmed that livelihoods, village status, and ritual practices form an integrated socio-cultural system aligned with conservation. These findings stress the role of endogenous governance in sustaining peatland-compatible lifestyles. Conservation efforts should move beyond carbon-centered or top-down approaches to reinforce land tenure, traditional governance, and knowledge transmission, thereby protecting both peatlands and the cultural identities sustaining them. Country parks are an important instrument for implementing China’s strategies on ecological civilization and integrated urban–rural development. This study conducted field surveys in seven country parks of Shanghai. Meanwhile, stakeholder seminars were organized with local residents and park authorities. To assess visitor satisfaction, a questionnaire survey was administered both on-site and online. Through case analysis and a policy review, this study systematically identifies key challenges in leveraging country parks for rural revitalization. The findings indicate that visitors highly value the ecological qualities of the parks, and basic infrastructure like roads and resting facilities generally meets expectations. However, shuttle services and smart guiding systems remain notable shortcomings that hinder the overall visitor experience. Moreover, gaps in service quality, local cultural representation, and the depth of nature education constitute the primary weaknesses affecting visitor satisfaction. Regarding rural revitalization, this study identifies four main limitations in the contribution of country parks: (1) Inadequate functional positioning and weak integration with surrounding resources; (2) Low land use efficiency and an unbalanced provision of supporting facilities; (3) Homogenized industrial formats with limited innovation and integration capacity; and (4) Restricted participation of local farmers and underdeveloped multi-stakeholder governance mechanisms. To address these issues, this study proposes four strategic recommendations: (1) Develop distinctive local brands and strengthen synergies with surrounding resources; (2) Promote mixed land use and enhance supporting service facilities; (3) Foster diversified business formats and facilitate the value realization of ecological products; and (4) Expand income-generation channels for farmers and improve multi-stakeholder governance frameworks. The research demonstrates that optimizing the functions of country parks can improve ecological and recreational services and help establish an integrated “ecology–industry–community” framework through industrial chain extension and community participation, thereby supporting rural revitalization. Human–wildlife conflicts arise from increasing human populations and the growing demand for land for agriculture and urban development. In Saudi Arabia, these dynamics have increased the impact of baboons on human communities, as expanding settlements encroach upon the natural habitats of baboons, while rising baboon populations increasingly invade urban areas in search of food, shelter, and water. We aimed to assess the effects of human–baboon coexistence on residents in the Al-Baha region, Saudi Arabia. From October 2021 to April 2022, we administered a 43-item semi-structured online questionnaire addressing emotional, social, environmental and financial impacts of nearby baboons. A total of 318 residents of the Al-Baha region completed the survey and shared their experiences regarding interactions with hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) near human properties. In addition, three semi-structured life interviews with residents aged over 70 explored historical perceptions. Respondents attributed increased baboon presence to urban expansion, accessible waste, and intentional feeding and strongly supported government-led mitigation plans. Human–baboon interactions in Al Baha produce emotional stress, social disruption, and economic burdens for residents. Findings support integrated management combining public education, improved waste management, non-lethal deterrents, and carefully planned population control measures, developed with community consultation. Limitations of the study include convenience online sampling and reliance on self-reported impacts; future work should quantify baboon abundance and objectively measure economic losses. Full article

This study examines how platformized e-commerce logistics reshapes urban land use at the neighborhood scale, using Shanghai as an empirical case. It argues that last-mile logistics infrastructure operates through two intertwined mechanisms: as physical service nodes that generate localized pedestrian flows sustaining neighborhood retail, and as neighborhood-level execution points within a digitally coordinated logistics system that produces citywide substitution pressures and restructures commercial spaces, particularly community-oriented shopping malls. Theoretically, the study advances platform and logistics urbanism by reconceptualizing last-mile infrastructure as a dual-role urban system with scale-dependent land-use effects. Methodologically, it combines street-segment regression analysis with shopping-mall case studies to link logistics proximity to fine-grained spatial outcomes. Empirically, the findings reveal complementary effects for street retail alongside accelerated restructuring and functional repurposing in community malls—patterns not captured by uniform displacement models. Planning analysis further identifies a governance mismatch in Shanghai’s 2017–2035 Master Plan, underscoring the need for platform-responsive planning to address emerging hybrid commercial–logistics spaces. While artisanal gold mining (AGM) has been credited as a sector that sustains many households in Zimbabwe, it has at the same time been criticized as the chief driver of ecological degradation and social vulnerability. This study qualitatively examines the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of AGM by conducting in-depth interviews with miners, residents, and policymakers across six central mining districts. The study findings indicate that the use of mercury has resulted in severe contamination of water bodies, while clearing land to pave the way for mining has led to severe deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and declining agricultural productivity due to the loss of fertile soils. It was also found that most AGMs were unregulated, and their unregulated operations have intensified health risks, social inequality, and land-use conflicts with the local community. This study provides an insight into how dependence on AGM has perpetuated a cycle of ecological degradation and poverty among many Zimbabweans. The study, therefore, attempts to combine community narratives with policy analysis, thereby proposing a framework for sustainable AGM in Zimbabwe. This involves advocating for the use of environmentally friendly technologies and promoting participatory environmental governance among all key stakeholders. The study contributes to achieving a balance between economic benefits and environmental management by advancing the discourse on sustainable development and community resilience in resource-dependent economies. Community-managed forests within agroforestry landscapes are vital for both carbon sequestration and agricultural sustainability. This study assesses the Hariyali Community Forest (HCF) in western Nepal, emphasizing its role in carbon storage within a Sal (Shorea robusta)-dominated lowland forest containing diverse native and medicinal species. Stratified field inventories combined with satellite-derived biomass and land-use/land-cover data were used to quantify carbon stocks and spatial trends. In 2022, the mean aboveground carbon density was 165 tC ha−1, totaling approximately 101,640 tC (~373,017 tCO2e), which closely matches satellite-based trends and indicates consistent carbon accumulation. Remote sensing from 2015–2022 showed a net tree cover gain of 427 ha compared to a 2000 baseline of 188 ha, evidencing effective community-led regeneration. The 615 ha Sal-dominated landscape also sustains agroforestry, small-scale horticulture, and subsistence crops, integrating livelihoods with conservation. Temporary carbon declines between 2020 and 2022, linked to localized harvesting and management shifts, highlight the need for stronger governance and local capacity. This study, among the first integrated carbon assessments in Nepal’s lowland Sal forests, demonstrates how community forestry advances REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries) objectives while enhancing rural resilience. Linking field inventories with satellite-derived biomass and land-cover data situates community forestry within regional environmental change and SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) targets (13, 15, and 1) through measurable ecosystem restoration and livelihood gains. Historical irrigation districts (HIDs) are integrated systems of natural and cultural assets, with cultivated land providing critical functions such as food security, environmental conservation, and cultural inheritance. This study presents a research framework for evaluating multifunctional potential, performance, and geographical matching along the “potential-performance” dimensions using analytical tools such as SPSS26.0, ArcGIS pro3.5.2, GeoDa1.22, InVEST3.13, and bivariate spatial autocorrelation. We use Mulanbei HID in China as a case study because of its thousand-year irrigation history and unique location at the intersection of coastal urban and rural communities. The results show the following: (1) In the Mulanbei HID, multifunctional cultivated land exhibits functions in the following order: producing functions, ecological functions, landscape–cultural functions, and social functions. The production function has a homogenous distribution characterized by high values. The ecological function, on the other hand, is distinguished by high-value clusters that decrease significantly as building land approaches its periphery. Social and landscape–cultural roles continue to be undervalued, with high-value places isolated on metropolitan margins. (2) In terms of matching multifunctional potential and performance, in the High-Potential–High-Performance cluster, production and ecological functions account for 19% and 20%, respectively, while in the High-Potential–Low-Performance cluster, social and landscape–cultural functions account for 33% and 27%. The Low-Potential–Low-Performance cluster has 4% production, 4% ecological, 10% social, and 13% landscape–cultural functions, but all four functions are less than 4% in the Low-Potential–High-Performance cluster. These findings provide a scientific foundation for improving cultivated land zoning and governance with a focus on heritage protection. Full article

Rural areas are complex multi-level regional systems comprising multiple elements such as natural resources, human resources, social systems, and economic elements. Drawing on the socio-ecological system framework, we develop a new evaluation system to better understand rural sustainable development and the interactions between economic, social, and natural factors. Applying this system to the case of Guizhou Province reveals the following: First, the overall level of sustainable development of rural communities is low. Furthermore, the development gap between communities is significant, mainly driven by differences in the resource system and economic outcomes. Second, the overall coupling and coordination level among the rural sustainable development subsystems is low, and they are all in the grinding and less coordinated stage. Compared with communities with lower sustainable development, those with higher sustainable development levels exhibit higher coupling and coupling coordination. Third, the obstacles to sustainable development in rural communities are mainly concentrated in the resource systems and economic outcomes, including construction land, housing, government funding, asset growth, income growth, profitability, and bonus sharing. The mitigation of natural hazards is a persistent challenge in Chile, where recurrent events such as summer forest fires and winter floods cause severe material and human losses. Municipalities, as key actors in disaster management, often face difficulties due to fragmented territorial information and the lack of standardized tools to support decision-making. This study applies the Land Administration Domain Model (ISO 19152) International Standard to design a multipurpose cadastre adapted to the Chilean context. The methodological approach integrates cadastral data with hazard and risk information, structuring it into standardized sub-packages that facilitate spatial analysis, interoperability, and municipal planning. The proposed model demonstrates its capacity to identify risk-prone areas, link property units with hazard data, and generate reliable inputs for disaster risk reduction plans. A prototype decision-support panel illustrates how the integration of cadastral and risk data can improve access to territorial information and support local governance. The contribution of this research is twofold: first, it establishes a standardized framework for territorial information management based on ISO 19152; second, it provides municipalities with a practical tool to strengthen disaster preparedness and response, promoting more resilient and sustainable communities. The purpose of this study is to clarify the impact of government embedment on villagers’ willingness to engage in mutual supervision of rural residential land utilization. It also examines the role of local elders’ involvement in this process, with the goal of improving the regulatory framework for rural residential land utilization. The data used in this study are sourced from a field survey of 450 rural households in Sichuan Province, China. Data analysis was conducted using Logit, Probit, and moderation effect models, among others. The results show the following: (1) Organizational Embedment significantly enhances villagers’ willingness to participate in mutual supervision, with government-established regulatory bodies and dedicated management personnel effectively incentivizing oversight participation. (2) Due to social risks in actual supervision, Ideological Embedment fails to effectively stimulate supervisory behavior. (3) The effects of Government Embedment vary significantly across villages in different geographic locations. (4) The involvement of local elders enhances the effectiveness of Government Organizational Embedment, with their role in rural residential land governance leaning more toward practical implementation than conceptual dissemination. The findings of this study are as follows: Against the backdrop of government administrative embedment in rural residential land governance, the involvement of local elders has played a significant role in enhancing effectiveness. Efforts should continue to focus on strengthening organizational oversight of rural residential land utilization, reinforcing communication between the government and villagers, and deepening collaboration with local elders to encourage active villager participation in the supervision and management of rural residential land use. The research found that in the process of agricultural transformation in developing countries, rural land transfer played a positive role in improving farmers’ welfare. Rural land transfer enables land lessors to obtain physical rent or implicit rent, which increases household income or enhances relationships with relatives and neighbors, generating a positive impact on farmers’ welfare. Land transfer was a comprehensive decision-making of households based on the optimal allocation of factor resources such as land, labor, and capital. Risks associated with land transfer and social security arrangements after transferring land rights have emerged as prominent obstacles. These factors tend to induce anxiety among land-leasing households regarding the livelihood risks their families might face post-transfer, thus making them hesitant and reluctant to engage in land transfer due to lingering concerns over both immediate and long-term interests. The welfare-enhancing effects of land transfer on farmers vary significantly depending on the local rural governance context, household’s social status within the community, and relative importance of internal family opinions in decision-making processes. This study demonstrates that the allocation of production factors should be examined within the overarching framework of urban–rural integration and provides empirical evidence and theoretical insights for central and local governments to refine relevant policy documents. Many Australian suburbs are threaded with open drainage networks. However, a preoccupation with drainage functions means that most of this drainage land delivers few liveability benefits to surrounding communities. As a result, numerous Local and State Governments are engaged in providing Living Stream upgrades to drainage land. Nonetheless, questions remain about where such improvements should be targeted for maximum benefit. In response, this paper documents a Delphi survey of experts and a related geospatial suitability analysis using a wide-ranging set of urban, societal, and environmental criteria to determine which areas of drainage land are most suitable for upgrades in Perth, Western Australia, a city which experiences a Mediterranean climate. The novelty of the paper’s contribution stems from the highly seasonal rainfall and related ephemeral summer hydrology distinguish Perth from many other cities where Water-Sensitive Urban Design is well-established. Moreover, the inclusion and evaluation of both tangible criteria (e.g., areas with a shortage of Public Open Space) and more intangible criteria (e.g., areas with population experiencing psychological distress) in the suitability analysis are comparatively rare. The results indicate that Living Stream-oriented Public Open Space should be deployed in areas with limited Public Open Space reserves, urban forest degradation, increasing urban densification, and Urban Heat Island challenges. The Indonesian palm oil industry faces enduring social, environmental, and sustainability challenges stemming from rapid expansion over the past decade. Although technologies exist to enhance productivity and balance economic and ecological goals, adoption among smallholders remains limited. This study explores how rural communities respond to the climate crisis and how social and environmental justice is distributed within palm oil-producing regions in Indonesia. Using an exploratory qualitative design grounded in a collective social change perspective, data were collected through observations and document studies to examine institutional dynamics influencing smallholder behavior. The analysis applies institutional logic to understand smallholder attitudes toward sustainability and innovation, and institutional context to assess constraints such as limited access to land, credit, and technical resources. Findings reveal that structural barriers—including corruption, weak legal certainty, and social exclusion—impede innovation and reinforce inequality. This study contributes theoretically by integrating eco-colonialism, intersectionality, and political ecology frameworks to advance understanding of socio-ecological justice in palm oil governance. It highlights how gender, ethnicity, and class shape access to resources, vulnerability, and resilience, emphasizing that environmental issues are embedded in broader power structures rooted in colonial legacies and neoliberal policies. Practically, the research calls for community-centered, participatory policies that recognize customary land rights, institutionalize transparent licensing and FPIC processes, and strengthen smallholder capacity through ISPO-aligned training. These measures can foster inclusive governance, mitigate conflict, and enhance sustainability, contributing to more equitable and resilient palm oil supply chains. Full article
