The windowpane oyster (Placuna placenta) is common in coastal areas of the Philippines, thriving in brackish waters. Its shells underpin the local craft industries. While its meat is edible, only small amounts are consumed locally, most going to waste. Utilization of this potential nutrient source is hindered by the lack of information concerning its organic and mineral content, the possible presence of heavy metal ions, and the risk of microbial pathogens. We report extensive analysis of the meat from Placuna placenta, harvested during three different seasons to account for potential variations. This comprises proximate analysis, mineral, antioxidant, and microbial analyses. While considerable seasonal variation was observed, the windowpane oyster was found to be a rich source of protein, fats, minerals, and carbohydrates, comparing well with the meats of other shellfish and land animals. Following pre-cooking (~90 °C, 25–30 min), the standard local method for food preparation, no viable E. coli or Salmonella sp. were detected. Mineral content was broadly similar to that reported in fish, although iron, zinc, and copper were more highly represented, nevertheless, heavy metals were below internationally acceptable levels, with the exception of one of three samples, which was slightly above the only current standard, FSANZ. Whether the arsenic was in the safer organic form, which is commonly the case for shellfish, or the more toxic inorganic form remains to be established. This and the variation of arsenic over time will need to be considered when developing food products. Overall, the meat of the windowpane oyster is a valuable food resource and its current (albeit low-level) use should lower any barriers to its acceptance, making it suitable for commercialization. The present data support its development for high-value food products in urban markets. Full article

Although the strawberry tree (A. unedo L.) has been long considered a neglected species of the Mediterranean maquis, the valorization of its fruit production may enhance its socioeconomic value, especially in rural areas. In this study, strawberry trees from different Sicilian sites were investigated in terms of macronutrients, fatty acid (FA) composition, tocopherols, total phenols, carotenoids, and minerals. Sicilian berries were a good source of carbohydrates (mainly fructose, glucose and sucrose) and dietary fiber. They were low in fat; however, the FA composition revealed the abundance of unsaturated FAs over saturated FAs and an advantageous n-6/n-3 ratio. Additionally, Sicilian berries showed an inversed linoleic/α-linolenic acid ratio with respect to berries from other Mediterranean regions, that had previously investigated in literature. This evidence suggests that this ratio may have a chemotaxonomic relevance. Considering antioxidants, the fruits had levels of tocopherols, particularly α-tocopherol, total phenols and carotenoids similar to those of certain commercial fruits. Precious amounts of minerals, such as Ca, K, Zn and Fe were also determined. Interestingly, berries harvested near a Sicilian volcanic area had higher levels of minerals, as well as tocopherols, phenols and carotenoids, than fruits from other Sicilian sites, thereby advancing the hypothesis that fruits from volcanic areas may have a superior nutritional value. Overall, data from this study elaborated by a proper statistical analysis revealed that the geographical origin was a relevant variable to consider in the reliable study of this fruit species. Enhancing the yield and qualitative traits of horticultural crops without further hampering the environment constitutes an urgent challenge that could be addressed by implementing innovative agronomic tools, such as plant biostimulants. This study investigated the effects of three commercial biostimulants—BIO1 (fulvic/humic acids), BIO2 (leonardite-humic acids), and BIO3 (plant-based extracts)—on leaf ecophysiology, yield, and fruit quality in two raspberry cultivars, ‘Autumn Bliss’ (AB) and ‘Zeva’ (Z), grown in an open-field context, to assess their effectiveness in raspberry cultivation. Experimental activities involved two Research Years (RYs), namely, year 2023 (RY 1) and 2024 (RY 2). Leaf parameters such as chlorophyll, flavonols, anthocyanins, and the Nitrogen Balance Index (NBI) were predominantly influenced by the interaction between Treatment, Year and Cultivar factors, indicating context-dependent responses rather than direct biostimulant effects. BIO2 showed a tendency to increase yield (g plant−1) and berry number plant−1, particularly in RY 2 (417.50 g plant−1, +33.93% vs. control). Fruit quality responses were cultivar and time-specific: BIO3 improved soluble solid content in AB (12.8 °Brix, RY 2, Intermediate Harvest) and Z (11.43 °Brix, +13.91% vs. BIO2). BIO2 reduced titratable acidity in AB (3.12 g L−1) and increased pH in Z (3.02, RY 2) but also decreased °Brix in Z. These findings highlight the potential of biostimulants to modulate raspberry physiology and productivity but underscore the critical role of cultivar, environmental conditions, and specific biostimulant composition in determining the outcomes, which were found to critically depend on tailored application strategies. Ocean energy is an abundant, eco-friendly, and renewable energy resource that is useful for powering sensor networks connected to the maritime Internet of Things (MIoT). These sensor networks can be used to measure different marine environmental parameters that affect ocean infrastructure integrity and harm marine ecosystems. This ocean energy can be harnessed through hybrid nanogenerators that combine triboelectric nanogenerators, electromagnetic generators, piezoelectric nanogenerators, and pyroelectric generators. These nanogenerators have advantages such as high-power density, robust design, easy operating principle, and cost-effective fabrication. However, the performance of these nanogenerators can be affected by the wear of their main components, reduction of wave frequency and amplitude, extreme corrosion, and sea storms. To address these challenges, future research on hybrid nanogenerators must improve their mechanical strength, including materials and packages with anti-corrosion coatings. Herein, we present recent advances in the performance of different hybrid nanogenerators to harvest ocean energy, including various transduction mechanisms. Furthermore, this review reports potential applications of hybrid nanogenerators to power devices in marine infrastructure or serve as self-powered MIoT monitoring sensor networks. This review discusses key challenges that must be addressed to achieve the commercial success of these nanogenerators, regarding design strategies with advanced simulation models or digital twins. Also, these strategies must incorporate new materials that improve the performance, reliability, and integration of future nanogenerator array systems. Thus, optimized hybrid nanogenerators can represent a promising technology for ocean energy harvesting with application in the maritime industry. Full article

Lychee (Lychee chinensis Sonn.) is a tropical fruit highly appreciated for its vivid red color, sweet flavor, and nutritional properties. However, it is highly perishable, with postharvest losses often due to oxidative browning and dehydration. This study evaluated the organic olive oil coating (OC), a natural lipidic system with the potential to act as a precursor for organogel development, combined with polyamide/polyethylene (PA/PE) packaging under passive modified atmosphere. Fruits were harvested at commercial maturity and divided into two groups: OC-treated and untreated control (CTR). Both groups were stored at 5 ± 1 °C and 90 ± 5% relative humidity and analyzed on days 0, 3, 6, and 9. The OC-treated fruits showed significantly better retention of physical, chemical, microbiological, and sensory qualities. The coating reduced oxidative stress and enzymatic browning, preserving color and firmness. The PA/PE packaging regulated gas exchange, lowering oxygen levels and delaying respiration and ripening. As a result, OC fruits had lower weight loss, a slower increase in browning index and maturity index, and better visual and sensory scores than the CTR group. This dual strategy proved effective in extending shelf life while maintaining the fruit’s appearance, flavor, and nutritional value. It represents a sustainable and natural approach to enhancing the postharvest stability of lychee. Full article

Continuous and accurate biomass measurement is a critical enabler for control, decision making, and optimization in modern plant production systems. It supports the development of plant growth models for advanced control strategies like model predictive control, and enables responsive, data-driven, and plant state-dependent cultivation. Traditional biomass measurement methods, such as destructive sampling, are time-consuming and unsuitable for high-frequency monitoring. In contrast, image-based estimation using computer vision and deep learning requires frequent retraining and is sensitive to changes in lighting or plant morphology. This work introduces a low-cost, load-cell-based biomass monitoring system tailored for vertical farming applications. The system operates at the level of individual growing trays, offering a valuable middle ground between impractical plant-level sensing and overly coarse rack-level measurements. Tray-level data allow localized control actions, such as adjusting light spectrum and intensity per tray, thereby enhancing the utility of controllable LED systems. This granularity supports layer-specific optimization and anomaly detection, which are not feasible with rack-level feedback. The biomass sensor is easily scalable and can be retrofitted, addressing common challenges such as mechanical noise and thermal drift. It offers a practical and robust solution for biomass monitoring in dynamic, growing environments, enabling finer control and smarter decision making in both commercial and research-oriented vertical farming systems. The developed sensor was tested and validated against manual harvest data, demonstrating high agreement with actual plant biomass and confirming its suitability for integration into vertical farming systems. Drosophila suzukii is an invasive pest of many fruit crops worldwide. Employing the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) could mitigate D. suzukii population growth and crop damage. This study evaluated the efficacy of SIT on commercial fruit, by (1) validating the quality of irradiated sterile males (male mating competitiveness, courtship, and flight performance) in the laboratory, and (2) assessing population suppression and fruit damage reduction in commercial raspberry fields. Treatment with SIT was compared to the grower’s standard chemical insecticide program throughout the season. The principal metrics of efficacy were trap counts of wild adult female D. suzukii in crops and larvae per fruit during harvesting. These metrics together with monitoring of border areas allowed targeting of high-pressure areas with higher releases of sterile males, to maximise efficacy for a given release number. The sterile male D. suzukii were as competitive as their fertile non-irradiated counterparts in laboratory mating competitiveness and flight performance studies while fertility egg-to-pupae recovery was reduced by 99%. In commercial raspberry crops, season-long releases of sterile males significantly suppressed the wild D. suzukii population, compared to the grower standard control strategy; with up to 89% reduction in wild female D. suzukii and 80% decrease in numbers of larvae per harvested fruit. Additionally, relative fruit waste (i.e., percentage of harvested fruits rejected for sale) at harvest was reduced for early, mid and late harvest crops, by up to 58% compared to the grower standard control. SIT has the potential to provide an effective and sustainable strategy for managing D. suzukii in raspberries, increasing marketable yield by reducing adult populations, fruit damage and waste fruit. SIT could therefore serve as a valuable tool for integrated pest management practices in berry production systems. Full article

Petit Manseng is a variety of Vitis vinifera gaining popularity in Virginia, USA because it consistently produces high quality grapes under variable growing conditions. However, its high sugar and acid levels complicate dry wine production. The goal of this study was to characterize Petit Manseng ripening kinetics from veraison to harvest to identify optimal harvest timing for producing dry white wines, using Chardonnay as a comparator because of its popularity in Virginia, well-known ripening kinetics, and ability to produce high quality dry white wines. A total of 74 samples of Petit Manseng and Chardonnay grapes were collected from five commercial sites over 2 years and evaluated for berry weight, pH, titratable acidity (TA), malic acid, total soluble solids (TSS), glucose, and fructose, with ripening kinetics modeled using segmented regressions. Results indicated that harvest timing and grape variety were the primary factors influencing ripening kinetics. In contrast, growing location and vintage had limited impact. In Chardonnay grapes, TA declined from 21 to 7.1 g/L and TSS increased from 6.1 to 19.5 g/L. In Petit Manseng, TA declined from 25 to 10.8 g/L and TSS increased from 8.0 to 23.6 g/L. Acid depletion plateaued ~2 weeks after sugar accumulation plateaued in Petit Manseng grapes, though the plateaus were similar in Chardonnay grapes. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) completely separated grapes based on pH or TA vs. sugars, but not malic acid vs. sugars, suggesting that tartaric acid is driving acidity differences between cultivars. These data indicate that regardless of when grapes are harvested, winemakers may need to employ targeted acid management strategies with Petit Manseng because of its ripening kinetics. Full article

Remote sensing tools have been proposed to assist with rice crop monitoring but have been developed and validated on ponded rice. This two-year study was conducted on a commercial rice farm with irrigation automation technology aimed to (i) understand how canopy reflectance differs between high-yielding ponded and aerobic rice, (ii) validate the feasibility of using the squared simplified canopy chlorophyll content index (SCCCI2) for N uptake estimates, and (iii) explore the SCCCI2 and similar chlorophyll-sensitive indices for grain quality monitoring. Multispectral images were collected from an unmanned aerial vehicle during both rice-growing seasons. Above-ground biomass and nitrogen (N) uptake were measured at panicle initiation (PI). The performance of single-vegetation-index models in estimating rice N uptake, as previously published, was assessed. Yield and grain quality were determined at harvest. Results showed that canopy reflectance in the visible and near-infrared regions differed between aerobic and ponded rice early in the growing season. Chlorophyll-sensitive indices showed lower values in aerobic rice than in the ponded rice at PI, despite having similar yields at harvest. The SCCCI2 model (RMSE = 20.52, Bias = −6.21 Kg N ha−1, and MAPE = 11.95%) outperformed other models assessed. The SCCCI2, squared normalized difference red edge index, and chlorophyll green index correlated at PI with the percentage of cracked grain, immature grain, and quality score, suggesting that grain milling quality parameters could be associated with N uptake at PI. This study highlights canopy reflectance differences between high-yielding aerobic (averaging 15 Mg ha−1) and ponded rice at key phenological stages and confirms the validity of a single-vegetation-index model based on the SCCCI2 for N uptake estimates in ponded and non-ponded rice crops. Phycocyanin is a natural, non-toxic, blue pigment-protein with many commercial applications. Its exploitation in various biotechnological sectors strongly depends on its purity grade (P). Phycocyanin is largely used in food industry where a low purity grade is required, while its widespread use in sectors requiring a higher purity is hampered by the cost of large-scale industrial production. Industry, in fact, needs simple, easily scalable and cost-effective procedures to ensure sustainable production of high-quality pigment. In this work we applied the innovative two-step ultrasound-based process UltraBlu to the pilot-scale production of phycocyanin. A total of 50 L of biomass suspension of commercial Spirulina were processed in batch mode. The pigment extract was obtained in one day, including the biomass harvesting. Food/cosmetic grade (P = 1.41–1.76) and a good yield (Y = 59.2–76.1%) were achieved. The initial results obtained suggest that UltraBlu can be an effective scalable process suitable to produce phycocyanin also on an industrial scale. Full article

The quality of wine largely depends on the quality of wine grapes, which is determined by their chemical composition. Therefore, measuring parameters related to grape ripeness, such as soluble solids content (SSC), is crucial for harvesting high-quality grapes. Visible–Near-Infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopy enables effective, non-destructive detection of SSC in grapes. However, commercial Vis/NIR spectrometers are often expensive, bulky, and power-consuming, making them unsuitable for on-site applications. This article integrated the AS7265X sensor to develop a low-cost handheld IoT multispectral detection device, which can collect 18 variables in the wavelength range of 410–940 nm. The data can be sent in real time to the cloud configuration, where it can be backed up and visualized. After simultaneously removing outliers detected by both Monte Carlo (MC) and principal component analysis (PCA) methods from the raw spectra, the SSC prediction model was established, resulting in an RV2 of 0.697. Eight preprocessing methods were compared, among which moving average smoothing (MAS) and Savitzky–Golay smoothing (SGS) improved the RV2 to 0.756 and 0.766, respectively. Subsequently, feature wavelengths were selected using UVE and SPA, reducing the number of variables from 18 to 5 and 6, respectively, further increasing the RV2 to 0.809 and 0.795. The results indicate that spectral data optimization methods are effective and essential for improving the performance of SSC prediction models. The IoT Vis/NIR Spectroscopic System proposed in this study offers a miniaturized, low-cost, and practical solution for SSC detection in wine grapes. Full article

Opuntia ficus-indica L. (Mill) belongs to the Cactaceae family. The plant produces edible and juicy fruits called cactus pear, recognized for their pleasant flavor and functional properties. However, the fruits have a short shelf life, hard seeds, and the presence of glochidia in the pericarpel. Recently, by inducing parthenocarpy, seedless fruits of cactus pear have been obtained. They have attractive colors, soft and small seminal residues, with a similar flavor to their original seeded counterparts. Nevertheless, their postharvest physiological behavior has not yet been documented. The aim of this study was to compare the biochemical, anatomical, and physiological characteristics of pollinated fruits, CP30 red and CP40 yellow varieties, with their parthenocarpic counterparts (CP30-P and CP40-P), obtained by the application of growth regulators in preanthesis. Fruits of each type were harvested at horticultural maturity, and analyses were carried out on both pulp and pericarpel (peel), using a completely randomized design. Results showed that red fruits CP30 and CP30-P showed higher concentrations of betacyanins in pulp (13.4 and 18.4 mg 100 g−1 FW) and in pericarpel (25.9 and 24.1 mg 100 g−1 FW), respectively; flavonoid content was significantly higher in partenocarpic fruits compared with the pollinated ones. Parthenocarpy mainly affected the shelf life, in pollinated fruits, CP30 was 14 days but 32 days in CP30-P; for CP40, it was 16 days, and 30 days in CP40-P. Also, the partenocarpic fruits were smaller but with a thicker pericarpel, and lower stomatal frequency. Overall, parthenocarpic fruits represent a viable alternative for commercial production due to their extended shelf life, lower weight loss, and soft but edible pericarpel. Full article

The simplex strategies of fertilizer management and problems caused by simultaneous precipitation and high-temperature (SPH) climate were the main factors that led to yield loss and quality decline in the continuous cropping of tea chrysanthemum (Dendranthema morifolium ‘Jinsi Huang’). In this study, with sustainable biofertilizers being proposed as a potential solution. However, their effects under such constraints are underexplored. In this study, we compared different proportions of a sustainable dark tea biofertilizer, made with two commonly used fertilizers, by their contributions to the morphological, photosynthetic, and flowering traits of D. morifolium ‘Jinsi Huang’. The results showed that increasing the dark tea biofertilizer application to 4.5 kg·m−2 significantly enhanced the soil alkali hydrolyzed nitrogen (596.53% increase), available phosphorus (64.11%), and rapidly available potassium (75.56%) compared to the levels in yellow soil. This nutrient enrichment in soil caused D. morifolium ‘Jinsi Huang’ to produce more leaves (272.84% increase) and flower buds (1041.67%), along with a strengthened photosynthetic capacity (higher Fv/Fm values and light saturation point). These improvements alleviated the photoinhibition caused by SPH climate conditions, ultimately leading to significantly higher contents of chlorogenic acid (38.23% increase) and total flavonoids (80.28%) in the harvested flowers compared to the control group. Thus, dark tea biofertilizer is a cost-effective and efficient additive for growing tea chrysanthemum in SPH regions due to improving soil quality and causing nutritional and functional components to accumulate in harvest flowers, which greatly promotes the commercial value of rural revitalization industries centered around tea chrysanthemum. Microwave energy is ideal for wearable devices due to its stable wireless power transfer capabilities. However, rigid receiving antennas in conventional RF energy harvesters compromise wearability. This study presents a wearable system using a flexible dual-band antenna (915 MHz/2.45 GHz) fabricated via conformal 3D printing on arm-mimicking curvatures, minimizing bending-induced performance loss. A hybrid microstrip–lumped element rectifier circuit enhances energy conversion efficiency. Tested with commercial 915 MHz transmitters and Wi-Fi routers, the system consistently delivers 3.27–3.31 V within an operational range, enabling continuous power supply for real-time physiological monitoring (e.g., pulse detection) and data transmission. This work demonstrates a practical solution for sustainable energy harvesting in flexible wearables. Full article

The commercialization of selective broccoli harvesters, a critical response to agricultural labor shortages, is hampered by end effectors with large operational envelopes and poor adaptability to complex field conditions. To address these limitations, this study developed and evaluated a novel end-effector with an integrated transverse cutting mechanism and a foldable grasping cavity. Unlike conventional fixed cylindrical cavities, our design utilizes actuated grasping arms and a mechanical linkage system to significantly reduce the operational footprint and enhance maneuverability. Key design parameters were optimized based on broccoli morphological data and experimental measurements of the maximum stem cutting force. Furthermore, dynamic simulations were employed to validate the operational trajectory and ensure interference-free motion. Field tests demonstrated an operational success rate of 93.33% and a cutting success rate of 92.86%. The end effector successfully operated in dense planting environments, effectively avoiding interference with adjacent broccoli heads. This research provides a robust and promising solution that advances the automation of broccoli harvesting, paving the way for the commercial adoption of robotic harvesting technologies. Full article
