Background: Estimating race times for open-water swimming based on pool swimming times could be useful for talent identification and training optimisation. We aimed to compare the swimming speeds of the world’s top and other swimmers in the 2023 Aquatics Championship men’s 10 km OWS race. Methods: Sixty-five swimmers were divided into four groups: G1 (1st–10th positions), G2 (11st–30th positions), G3 (31st–47th positions), and G4 (48th–65th positions). Swimming speed, stroke frequency (SF), and stroke length (SL) for each lap (laps 1–6) were recorded. Critical speed (CS) was calculated from each participant’s personal best times in the 400, 800, and 1500 m freestyle events in the pool. Swimming speed against CS was calculated (%CS). Results: The top performance group (G1) maintained their swimming speed from beginning (lap 1, 1.53 m/s) to end (lap 6, 1.50 m/s), at 92.7 ± 1.9% of CS, characterised by longer SL (1.26 m) and lower SF (72.86 rpm). G3 and G4 were unable to maintain their swimming speed, which decreased from G3: 97.64 ± 1.62% and G4: 96.10 ± 1.96% of CS at lap 1 to G3: 88.39 ± 3.78% and G4: 85.13 ± 5.04% at lap 6. This reduction in swimming speed is consistent with the increased reliance on anaerobic metabolism reported in previous studies under similar conditions. Conclusions: Race pacing for maintaining speeds of 92%CS throughout the race could be an important resilient index in open-water swimming. %CS might be a useful index for estimating the athletic performance level in open-water swimming. Laboratory-based assessment of cardiorespiratory function is a widely applied method in sports science. Most performance evaluations focus on oxygen uptake parameters. Despite the well-established concept of oxygen deficit introduced by Hill in the 1920s, relatively few studies have examined its behavior during submaximal exercise, with limited exploration of deficit dynamics. The present study aimed to analyze the behavior of oxygen deficit in young female handball players (N = 42, age: 15.4 ± 1.3 years) during graded exercise. Oxygen deficit was estimated using the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) algorithm, restricted to subanaerobic threshold segments of a quasi-ramp exercise protocol. Cardiorespiratory parameters were measured with the spiroergometry test on treadmills, and body composition was assessed via Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). Cluster and principal component analyzes revealed two distinct athlete profiles with statistically significant differences in both morphological and physiological traits. Cluster 2 showed significantly higher relative VO2 peak (51.43 ± 3.70 vs. 45.70 ± 2.87 mL·kg−1·min−1; p < 0.001; Cohen’s d = 1.76), yet also exhibited a greater oxygen deficit per kilogram (39.03 ± 16.71 vs. 32.56 ± 14.33 mL·kg−1; p = 0.018; d = 0.80). Cluster 1 had higher absolute body mass (69.67 ± 8.13 vs. 59.66 ± 6.81 kg; p < 0.001), skeletal muscle mass (p < 0.001), and fat mass (p < 0.001), indicating that body composition strongly influenced oxygen deficit values. The observed differences in oxygen deficit profiles suggest a strong influence of genetic predispositions, particularly in cardiovascular and muscular oxygen utilization capacity. Age also emerged as a critical factor in determining the potential for adaptation. Oxygen deficit during submaximal exercise appears to be a multifactorial phenomenon shaped by structural and physiological traits. While certain influencing factors can be modified through training, others especially those of genetic origin pose inherent limitations. Early development of cardiorespiratory capacity may offer the most effective strategy for long-term optimization. Full article

Conductive hydrogels demonstrate substantial potential for flexible wearable sensors in motion monitoring, owing to their unique physicochemical properties; however, current implementations still confront persistent challenges in long-term stability, sensitivity, response speed, and detection limits under complex dynamic conditions, which material innovations are urgently required to resolve. Consequently, this paper comprehensively reviews the recent advancements in conductive hydrogel-based flexible wearable sensors for sports applications. The paper examines the conductivity, self-adhesion, self-repair, and biocompatibility of conductive hydrogels, along with detailed analyses of their working principles in resistance, capacitance, piezoelectric, and battery-based sensing mechanisms. Additionally, the paper summarizes innovative strategies to enhance sensor performance through polymer blending, polyelectrolyte doping, inorganic salt doping, and nanomaterial integration. Furthermore, the paper highlights the latest applications of conductive hydrogel flexible wearable sensors in human motion monitoring, electrophysiological signal detection, and electrochemical biosignal monitoring. Finally, the paper provides an in-depth discussion of the advantages and limitations of existing technologies, offering valuable insights and new perspectives for future research directions. This study examines how medically disqualified NCAA Division I student-athletes experience the abrupt end of their athletic careers and how those experiences reflect broader cultural and psychological dynamics within college sport. Utilizing an interpretive phenomenology analysis, we explore if the experiences of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I student-athletes, who become medically disqualified, can be conceptualized by researchers through the stages of the Kübler-Ross model addressing grief responses. Unlike the prior research criticizing the application of the model to injured athletes, we found ample support for the possible applicability of each emotional stage; however, our study findings also reveal that the staged transitions do not necessarily follow in sequential order, as suggested by Kübler-Ross. Thus, the model applies as a general framework of grief from loss, but not as a fixed set of grieving processes for elite student-athletes who become medically disqualified. We conclude with implications for NCAA policy, athlete mental health services, and the cultivation of exit cultures that prioritize human well-being over athletic productivity. Full article

Collegiate student-athletes are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity (FI). Prevalence rates range from 9.9% to 65%, although research is limited among this population. Background/Objectives: The challenge of balancing academic and degree progression requirements with training and competition demands can increase the risk for FI among student-athletes. Furthermore, insufficient funds for food has been reported for student-athletes living both on campus and off campus. Methods: This qualitative study employed a phenomenological design and constructivist theoretical framework to explore the experiences of athletic trainers, sports dietitians/nutritionists, and other professionals working with student-athletes in identifying and addressing FI among student-athletes via a series of online focus groups. Results: Participants (n = 27, 12 public colleges) had ≥7 years of collegiate athletics work experience, and most had been in their current position for <3 years. Five approaches to FI screening emerged; specifically, no screening, screening varies by team/sport, informal screening, dietitian screening, and formal screening. Emerging social determinants of FI included financial challenges, competing priorities, cultural/societal impacts, limited life skills, and the food environment. All these factors precipitated on a systems level, including individual, team/athletic department, and university/societal tiers. Conclusions: Athletic department and university policies and budgetary decisions emerged as potential antagonists of food security among student-athletes. FI mitigation strategies for student-athletes must go beyond simply addressing individual factors. Obtainment of food security among collegiate student-athletes requires system changes at the team/athletic department and university tiers. Full article

Background: Individuals with ADHD may perform poorly on tasks targeting executive functioning skills such as the ImPACT, which requires the test-taker to employ judgement in non-routine situations Objective: To determine whether ADHD serves as a mediating variable for increasing the likelihood of an invalid score. Materials and Methods: A total of 39,140 collegiate athletes and United States military cadets consented to the Concussion Assessment, Research, and Education (CARE) Consortium study. Participants completed the CARE Baseline Packet which included various sections through which study participants provide self-report data, including demographic, personal, and family history sections. The personal history portion of the CARE Baseline Packet addressed the participant’s neurological history, including self-reported diagnosis of ADHD and history of traumatic brain injury. Variables utilized for the current study included age, gender, race, ethnicity, the participant’s primary college sport, use of mouthguards for athletes competing in sports requiring them, and the presence of an ADHD diagnosis. Participants responded to a question, inquiring if they had ever been diagnosed by a medical professional with ADHD, ultimately producing a dichotomous yes/no response. Results: We found that participants with ADHD were more likely to produce invalid baseline scores (ß = −0.884; p < 0.001). Similar results were found when controlling for sex, race, age, sport played, mouthguard use, and number of previous concussions (ß = −0.786; p < 0.001). Sex, race, sport played, and mouthguard use each played a significant role in determining profile validity, independent of ADHD diagnosis. With ADHD removed from the model, age negatively affected the likelihood of a valid score (ß = −0.052; p = 0.048). Conclusions: Our study suggests that the relationship between age and ImPACT validity is explained by the presence of ADHD. Results support adjusting ImPACT’s validity thresholds for individuals with ADHD. Full article

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of various nutritional supplements in enhancing endurance performance and subjective thermal perception in athletes exposed to high-temperature environments through a systematic review and network meta-analysis. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and EBSCOhost from inception to January 2025. Studies were included if they evaluated the effects of nutritional supplements on either endurance performance or subjective thermal perception in athletes under heat stress. Two independent reviewers screened the literature, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. A network meta-analysis was performed using R software (version 4.3.1). The search was limited to English-language publications and employed both MeSH and free-text terms related to “athletes,” “nutritional supplements,” and “exercise performance,” using Boolean operators (AND/OR) to construct the strategy. Results: Twenty-five randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 552 participants were included, yielding 22 comparisons: 18 assessed endurance performance, and 11 assessed subjective perception. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) and posterior probabilities (P-scores based on Bayesian ranking) were calculated using random-effects and Bayesian models. Menthol (SMD = −1.83, 95% CI [−3.15, −0.51]; P-score = 71.04%) and taurine (SMD = 0.91, 95% CI [0.08, 1.73]; P-score = 12.75%) demonstrated significant positive effects on endurance. Menthol energy gel showed the greatest improvement in thermal comfort (SMD = 2.14, 95% CI [1.01, 3.26]; P-score = 99.54%). Conclusions: Menthol and taurine appear effective in enhancing endurance in hot environments, while menthol energy gel substantially improves perceived thermal comfort. Future research should apply stricter controls regarding environmental conditions, supplement dosage, and participant characteristics. While individual supplements may offer limited benefits, synergistic combinations may yield greater improvements in performance and comfort. Full article

Sports participation according to socioeconomic status (SES) was related to children in high-income Western countries. This study aimed to examine whether family or neighborhood-level SES is associated with current and continued organized sports participation, including the types of sports, among Japanese primary school children from preschool onward. The participants consisted of 269 girls, 255 boys, and their parents. Data on the type of sports participation at the current school or preschool, parental employment, and education were collected by questionnaire. Neighborhood-level SES was evaluated by the average annual income within 4 km of each school. The odds of sports participation was higher among children with mothers identifying as housewives or those with mothers employed part-time. Among girls, the odds of continued sports participation were lower if their mothers were junior high school or high school graduates or junior college/vocational school graduates. The odds of sports type like swimming were higher for children whose mothers had part-time jobs. Lower average community income was associated with lower participation in football and higher participation in baseball. These findings suggest that mothers’ employment and academic background are important correlates of sports participation for children, with variations observed by sport type and gender. Full article

Obesity cardiomyopathy (OCM) represents a rapidly growing health concern globally, characterized by metabolic, structural, and functional abnormalities of the heart. Current research has demonstrated that inflammation plays a pivotal role in obesity-induced cardiomyopathy, and that regular exercise can ameliorate lipid disturbances and inflammatory abnormalities effectively. However, the underlying mechanisms are not fully elucidated. We investigated the effects of an 8-week aerobic exercise intervention on myocardial structure, function, and inflammation in HFD-induced obese mice. The results revealed that aerobic exercise alleviated myocardium pyroptosis and inflammation by down-regulating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Furthermore, the inhibition of the PI3K pathway by LY294002, coupled with exercise, attenuated and suppressed HFD-induced myocardial impairments, inflammation, and pyroptosis, with a synergistic effect. Based on these findings, we concluded that eight weeks of aerobic exercise synergizes with the inhibition of PI3K through inflammatory and pyroptosis mechanisms to improve obesity-associated myocardial remodeling and dysfunction. Therefore, long-term regular aerobic exercise represents a potential strategy in the treatment of OCM. Full article

Collegiate sports serve as a powerful platform for advancing youth development and social engagement, contributing not only to athletic growth but also to personal development, teamwork, and social justice among student-athletes. This study explores the relationships among procedural justice, coach trust, perceived organizational support (POS), and team commitment in collegiate athletes. A self-reported questionnaire administered to college athletes collected 285 usable responses. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. The findings reveal that higher perceptions of procedural justice are significantly associated with greater team commitment, increased coach trust, and higher POS. Additionally, coach trust positively influences both team commitment and POS. However, no significant relationship was found between POS and team commitment, indicating that POS alone may not be a direct predictor of athlete commitment without the presence of mediating factors. These findings highlight the pivotal role of procedural justice, coach trust, and POS in shaping team commitment among collegiate athletes, underscoring the importance of fair decision-making and relational trust in fostering youth development and reflecting the broader influence of behavioral and social dynamics in collegiate sport settings. The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefits of a 12-week plyometric training program intervention on lower limb joint mobility, explosive strength, advanced layup success rates, and injury rates. The study recruited 15 collegiate male basketball players as participants. They underwent basketball training five times per week, each lasting two hours, and additionally received plyometric training twice a week. The study utilized image processing software (ImageJ, version 1.54f, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA) to measure the lower limb joint mobility during the take-off phase of a layup and employed a force plate to assess the explosive strength of the lower limbs during the jump. Furthermore, the study examined the success rate and injury rate of advanced layups—including crossover layups, spin layups, and straight-line layups—as well as the sports injury rate. The results demonstrated that plyometric training significantly enhanced the hip, knee, and ankle joint mobility as well as lower limb explosive strength, with a strong positive correlation between these variables. Furthermore, plyometric training improved joint mobility and lower limb explosive strength. The success rate of advanced layups increased from 50% to 72%, while the sports injury rate decreased from 18% to 8%. In conclusion, plyometric training significantly improved participants’ lower limb joint mobility and explosive strength, which in turn enhanced advanced layup performance and reduced the sports injury rate. Although this study provided preliminary evidence supporting the effectiveness of plyometric training, further research is needed to examine its long-term effects and other influencing factors. Background/Objectives: Diabetes frequently leads to cognitive impairment, encompassing issues with memory and executive function, as well as depression and anxiety. This study examines the impact of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) alongside glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) semaglutide on cognitive dysfunction associated with diabetes. Methods: Db/db mice were divided into a control group, semaglutide group, HIIE group, and semaglutide combined with HIIE group to study metabolic and neurobehavioral effects. Cognitive and behavioral tests, hippocampal morphology, and molecular analyses (APP, BDNF, Aβ, p-Tau, PKA, AMPK) were performed. HT22 cells under high glucose were treated with semaglutide, L-lactate, PKA inhibitor H89, and AMPK inhibitor Compound C to validate mechanisms. Results: Over 8 weeks, both HIIE and semaglutide improved neuronal morphology and cognitive performance while reducing depression in db/db mice. However, the current study observed no synergistic effects. Both therapies decreased Aβ and p-Tau protein levels and increased BDNF levels in the hippocampus, likely through the AMPK and PKA signaling pathways, respectively. In vitro, HT22 cells under high glucose conditions exhibited elevated APP and p-Tau expression and reduced BDNF levels, which could be altered by L-lactate and semaglutide. The AMPK inhibitor Compound C and the PKA inhibitor H89 attenuated the increase in BDNF levels induced by L-lactate and semaglutide, but their combination mitigated this inhibitory effect. This study suggests that while HIIE and semaglutide improve cognitive function and reduce depression via BDNF, their combined use did not show the anticipated synergistic benefits due to potential antagonism between the AMPK and PKA pathways. Conclusions: This has important implications for designing exercise prescriptions for cognitive impairment in diabetics. Full article

Background: Athletes with expertise in sports show extensive procedural and factual information, enhancing their ability to focus attention, use cues, and anticipate events. This study examined the differentiation of perceptual-cognitive skills by focusing on attentional cues, processing speed, and working memory. Methods: The component skill approach was used to assess differences in sports expertise levels using non-sport-specific cognitive measures of perceptual-cognitive skills. The study involved a total of 127 college athletes with a mean age of 20.23 years (SD = 3.08) and an average of 10.99 years of training. Among these participants, there were 43 female athletes with a mean age of 20.23 years (SD = 3.32) and 84 male athletes with a mean age of 20.22 years (SD = 2.98). We analyzed the cohort of students who did not engage in regular sports training, identifying them as the control group for our study. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was employed to analyze the measures of the SPT and CBT perceptual-cognitive tasks, treating them as separate dependent variables. The categorization of elite levels and participants is outlined below: there are 41 semi-elite athletes, 70 competitive elite athletes, 12 successful elite athletes, and 4 world-class elite athletes. Results: There were no differences in semi-elite and competitive elite athletes’ perceptual-cognitive skills regarding visual-spatial reaction time (Wilks’ λ = 0.956, p > 0.05), but there was a significant difference in the working memory span (Wilks’ λ = 0.804, p < 0.05). Conclusions: The study reports that elite college athletes have higher working memory, which is crucial for sport performance, compared to semi-elite athletes. However, no between-group differences were observed in reaction time. Full article

The mental health of college students has become a key focus in higher education, and physical activity may play a crucial role in promoting positive psychology among college students. This study explores the relationship between physical activity and physical self-efficacy among college students and analyzes the mediating effect of psychological resilience to provide theoretical support for health intervention strategies. This study included a sample of 369 college students aged 18–25 from the Zhuhai Campus of Beijing Normal University. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-S), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and the Physical Self-Efficacy Scale for College Students (PSES-CS) were administered to 369 students (138 males and 231 females) through a questionnaire survey. The data were processed using SPSS 29.0 and AMOS 26.0 software. Significant positive correlations were found between physical activity, psychological resilience, and physical self-efficacy. Regression analysis revealed that physical activity had a significant effect on psychological resilience and physical self-efficacy and explained 8.3% and 14.9% of the variance, respectively. Psychological resilience partially mediated the relationship between physical activity and physical self-efficacy, accounting for 30.05% of the total effect. Moreover, gender moderated the relationship between physical activity and physical self-efficacy. Physical activity can enhance the physical self-efficacy of college students, with psychological resilience playing a partial mediating role and gender acting as a moderating factor. Emphasizing the cultivation of psychological resilience in educational and personal growth processes is highly important for improving individuals’ physical self-efficacy and well-being. Full article

Endurance athletes frequently experience muscle damage and inflammation due to prolonged, high-intensity exercise, which can impair recovery and hinder performance. This review examines the role of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation in muscle repair, inflammation modulation, and immune regulation. BCAAs—particularly leucine and isoleucine—activate key molecular pathways, including the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), to promote muscle protein synthesis and enhance energy metabolism. They also attenuate inflammatory responses by modulating the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathways, reducing levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). In addition, BCAAs influence immune function via mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling, enhance autophagy, and mitigate exercise-induced apoptosis. These molecular effects result in reduced muscle soreness, lower muscle damage biomarker levels (e.g., creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase), and improved recovery. Practical considerations such as optimal dosage, timing, and co-supplementation with carbohydrates, proteins, or omega-3s are also addressed. While BCAAs show promise as a nutritional strategy for enhancing recovery and controlling inflammation in endurance athletes, further research is needed to refine personalized protocols and clarify long-term effects.
