Real-Time Detection and Response to Wormhole and Sinkhole Attacks in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks have become a vital technology that is extensively applied across multiple industries, including agriculture, industrial operations, and smart cities, as well as residential smart homes and environmental monitoring systems. Security threats emerge in these systems through hidden routing-level attacks such as Wormhole and Sinkhole attacks. The aim of this research was to develop a methodology for detecting security incidents in WSNs by conducting real-time analysis of Wormhole and Sinkhole attacks. Furthermore, the paper proposes a novel detection methodology combined with architectural enhancements to improve network robustness, measured by hop counts, delays, false data ratios, and route integrity. A real-time WSN infrastructure was developed using ZigBee and Global System for Mobile Communications/General Packet Radio Service (GSM/GPRS) technologies. To realistically simulate Wormhole and Sinkhole attack scenarios and conduct evaluations, we developed a modular cyber–physical architecture that supports real-time monitoring, repeatability, and integration of ZigBee- and GSM/GPRS-based attacker nodes. During the experimentation, Wormhole attacks caused the hop count to decrease from 4 to 3, while the average delay increased by 40%, and false sensor readings were introduced in over 30% of cases. Additionally, Sinkhole attacks led to a 27% increase in traffic concentration at the malicious node, disrupting load balancing and route integrity. The proposed multi-stage methodology includes data collection, preprocessing, anomaly detection using the 3-sigma rule, and risk-based decision making. Simulation results demonstrated that the methodology successfully detected route shortening, packet loss, and data manipulation in real time. Thus, the integration of anomaly-based detection with ZigBee and GSM/GPRS enables a timely response to security threats in critical WSN deployments. Full article

Background: Empowerment during pregnancy is linked to improved maternal and infant health outcomes and greater maternal well-being. Group Antenatal Care (GANC), a participant-centered model of care, promotes empowerment, active engagement, and the deconstruction of hierarchy between participants and care providers. It combines health assessment, interactive learning, and community building. While empowerment is a core concept of GANC, the ways it manifests and the elements that facilitate it remain unclear. Method: We conducted a generic qualitative study across four organizations in Brussels, using multiple data collection methods. This included interviews with 13 participants and 21 observations of GANC sessions, combining both the insider and outsider perspective. An adapted version of the Pregnancy-Related Empowerment Scale (PRES) guided the interviews guide and thematic analysis. Results: We identified seven themes that capture how empowerment occurs in GANC: peer connectedness, provider connectedness, skillful decision-making, responsibility, sense of control, taking action, and gaining voice. Several aspects of GANC contribute to empowerment, particularly the role of facilitators. Conclusions: This study highlights how GANC enhances empowerment during pregnancy through interpersonal, internal, and external processes. Important components within GANC that support this process include the group-based format and the interactive nature of the discussions. The presence of skillful GANC facilitators is an essential prerequisite. In a diverse and often vulnerable context like Brussels, strengthening empowerment through GANC presents challenges but is especially crucial. Full article

Exclusive Breastfeeding or Formula Use? A Cross-Sectional Survey of Romanian Mothers’ Feeding Practices and Influencing Factors

Background and Objectives: Exclusive breastfeeding offers optimal nutrition and health benefits for infants, yet many mothers face challenges that impact their ability to breastfeed. This study aimed to explore breastfeeding practices among Romanian mothers and identify factors associated with successful exclusive breastfeeding. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from February to March 2025, targeting Romanian mothers via social media platforms. The questionnaire, developed specifically for this study, collected data on sociodemographics, birth and neonatal variables, hospital practices, feeding intentions, community influences, and breastfeeding outcomes. A total of 874 valid responses were analyzed using Fisher’s exact tests and multivariable logistic regression. Results: While 87.2% of mothers intended to breastfeed, only 56.1% reported exclusive breastfeeding. Factors significantly associated with reduced likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding included maternal age ≥ 30 years (OR = 1.40, p = 0.042), Cesarean delivery (OR = 1.78, p < 0.001), absence of rooming-in (OR = 2.32, p < 0.001), and pacifier use (OR > 4.7, p < 0.001). Protective factors included non-smoking status (OR = 0.52, p < 0.001) and encouragement to breastfeed by medical staff (OR = 1.60, p = 0.004). Despite external advice to use formula, many mothers continued breastfeeding. Conclusions: Although breastfeeding intention was high, exclusive breastfeeding remains suboptimal in Romania. Targeted support—particularly in maternity hospitals and for mothers recovering from Cesarean sections—alongside prenatal education and consistent postnatal guidance are essential to bridge the gap between intention and practice. Isotopic investigations focused on determining the mobility and provenance of ancient human civilizations and sourcing of archeological artifacts continue to gain prominence in archeology. Most studies focus on the premise that the geographic variation in isotope systems of interest (e.g., Sr, Pb, Nd, O) in the natural environment is recorded in both human hard tissues of local individuals and raw materials sourced for artifacts within the same region. The introduction of multi-collection–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) and laser ablation systems are techniques that consume smaller sample sizes compared to previous mass spectrometric approaches due to their higher ionization efficiency and increased sensitivity. This development has facilitated the isotopic measurement of trace elements present at low abundances (e.g., Pb, Nd, <1-to-low ppm range) particularly in human tooth enamel. Accurate interpretation of any isotope ratio measurement for the proveniencing of such low-abundance samples requires the adequate evaluation of post-mortem diagenetic alteration. A synopsis of practices currently in use for identifying post-mortem alteration in human archeological samples is discussed here. Post-mortem shifts in radiogenic isotope signatures resulting from secondary alteration are distinct from those potentially related to the impact of climate change on the bioavailable budgets for these elements. This topic is of interest to the archeological community and discussed here in the context of Holocene-aged samples from burial sites within the Nile River Valley System, and preferred dust source areas from the neighboring Sahara Desert. Travel Frequent-Route Identification Based on the Snake Algorithm Using License Plate Recognition Data

Path flow always plays a critical role in extracting vehicle travel patterns and reflecting network-scale traffic features. However, the comprehensive topological structure of urban road networks induces massive route choices, so frequent travel routes have been gradually regarded as an ideal countermeasure to represent traffic states. Widely used license plate recognition (LPR) devices can collect the abundant traffic features of all vehicles, but their sparse spatial distributions restrict the conventional models in frequent travel identification. Therefore, this study develops a network reconstruction method to construct a topological network from the LPR dataset, avoiding the adverse effects caused by the sparse distribution of detectors on the road network and further uses the Snake algorithm to fully utilize the road network structure and traffic attributes for clustering to obtain various travel patterns, with frequent routes under different travel patterns finally identified based on Steiner trees and frequent item recognition. To address the sparse spatial distribution of LPR devices, we utilize the word2vec model to extract spatial correlations among intersections. A threshold-based method is then applied to transform the correlation matrix into a reconstructed network, connecting intersections with strong vehicle transition relationships. This community structure can be interpreted as representing different travel patterns. Consequently, the Snake algorithm is employed to cluster intersections into distinct categories, reflecting these varied travel patterns. By leveraging the word2vec model, the detector installation rate requirement for Snake is significantly reduced, ensuring that the clustering results accurately represent the intrinsic relevance of traffic roads. Subsequently, frequent routes are identified from both macro- and micro-perspectives using the Steiner tree and Frequent Pattern Growth (FP Growth) algorithm, respectively. Validated on the LPR dataset in Changsha, China, the experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively identify travel patterns and extract frequent routes in the sparsely installed LPR devices. Autonomous vehicles and intelligent traffic transportation are widely investigated for road networks. Context-aware traffic light scheduling algorithms determine signal phases by analyzing the real-time characteristics and contextual information of competing traffic flows. The context of traffic flows mainly considers the existence of regular, emergency, or heavy vehicles. This is an important factor in setting the phases of the traffic light schedule and assigning a high priority for emergency vehicles to pass through the signalized intersection first. VANET technology, through its communication capabilities and the exchange of data packets among moving vehicles, is utilized to collect real-time traffic information for the analyzed road scenarios. This introduces an attractive environment for hackers, intruders, and criminals to deceive drivers and intelligent infrastructure by manipulating the transmitted packets. This consequently leads to the deployment of less efficient traffic light scheduling algorithms. Therefore, ensuring secure communications between traveling vehicles and verifying the integrity of transmitted data are crucial. In this work, we investigate the possible attacks on the integrity of transferred messages and vehicles’ identities and their effects on the traffic light schedules. Then, a new secure context-aware traffic light scheduling system is proposed that guarantees the integrity of transmitted messages and verifies the vehicles’ identities. Finally, a comprehensive series of experiments were performed to assess the proposed secure system in comparison to the absence of security mechanisms within a simulated road intersection. We can infer from the experimental study that attacks on the integrity of vehicles have different effects on the efficiency of the scheduling algorithm. The throughput of the signalized intersection and the waiting delay time of traveling vehicles are highly affected parameters. Full article

Background/Objectives: Previous studies assessing dietary intake have used self-report methods, prone to misreporting. Using researcher-conducted weighed food records, we assessed rural and urban mothers’ energy and nutrient intakes of concern and compared them to recommended nutrient intakes (RNIs). Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in rural (Asaase Kokoo) and urban (University of Ghana Staff Village) communities. Dietary data were collected from fifty-four mothers (26 rural, 28 urban) on 2 weekdays and 1 weekend day, analyzed with software, and programmed with West African, FNDDS, Kenyan, Ugandan, and USDA food composition databases. Results: Mean (SD) ages (years) were 35.8 (11.6) and 44.4 (7.6), and mean energy intakes (kcal) were 2026 (461) and 1669 (385) for rural and urban mothers, respectively. Mean percentage contributions of macronutrients to energy intake were within recommended ranges for rural and urban mothers. All participants met or exceeded vitamin A RNI, irrespective of location. While all rural mothers met or exceeded iron RNI, some urban mothers (14.3%) did not. Few rural (7.7%) and urban mothers (10.7%) did not meet zinc RNI. About half of rural (46.2%) and urban mothers (53.6%) did not meet folate RNI. Most rural (96.1%) and urban mothers (92.8%) met or exceeded fiber RNI. Conclusions: Overall, rural mothers had higher energy and nutrient intakes than urban mothers. While most met RNIs, there were some micronutrient inadequacies, particularly folate, where almost half of rural and urban mothers consumed below RNI. Our findings indicate the need for tailored interventions to prevent nutrient deficiencies or excesses in Ghanaian mothers. Full article

Ibisia marginata (Diptera, Athericidae) is an important species in macrozoobenthic communities in freshwater streams and rivers of Europe. It is a merolimnic insect whose larvae live in aquatic habitats and are predators. Pupation takes place out of water, mainly in moss, and adults live in terrestrial habitats in close proximity to water. The goals of this study were to determine the distributional patterns of I. marginata in Croatia, both as larvae and adults. Additionally, a goal was to recognize emergence patterns through the 16 years of research at Plitvice Lakes NP. The preference of larvae towards the different substrates represented at Plitvice Lakes NP was also analyzed. Samples of larvae and adults were collected at 50 sampling sites. Adults of I. marginata were collected monthly using pyramid-type emergence traps at four sampling sites in Plitvice Lakes National Park. At two of these sites, samples were collected from 2007 to 2008, while at the other two sites, sampling was conducted from 2007 to 2022. A total of 374 adult specimens were collected during the 16 years of the emergence study. Ibisia marginata is a univoltine species with a peak emergence in July and a flight period lasting from June to August, depending on the year. Preferred larval substrates were moss and gravel. Association Between Legionnaires’ Disease Incidence and Meteorological Data by Region and Time on the Island of Crete, Greece

Since its first appearance as a human pathogen in 1976, Legionella pneumophila has been identified as a causative agent of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). It survives in rivers, bays, lakes, and water reservoirs, and it is categorized as the fourth most common causative agent of CAP leading to hospitalization. We aimed to investigate patterns in which environmental, seasonal and regional factors may affect the prevalence of Legionnaires’ disease in Crete during the last two decades (2000–2022).The data used originated from the national surveillance database and included any person reported with travel-associated Legionnaires’ disease (TALD) between January 2000 and December 2022. Meteorological data were collected from the National Weather Service. The meteorological variables included (max) temperature (in °C), cloudiness (in octas), wind speed (in knots), and relative humidity (RH) (%). The statistical analysis was based on a case-crossover design with 1:1 matching characteristic. We revealed both seasonal and regional effects on the incidence of Legionnaires’ disease. Cases are significantly more frequent in autumn, in comparison to the other three seasons, while Rethymnon is the prefecture with fewer cases in comparison to Chania or Heraklion. In addition, our research showed that the majority of cases occurred during the years 2017–2018. TALD in Crete is significantly associated with temperature in °C and wind speed in knots. Our research suggests that temporal and spatial factors significantly influence disease cases. These results are in line with studies from foreign countries. The study results aspire to expand our knowledge regarding the epidemiological characteristics of Legionnaires’ disease in relation to local, geographical and meteorological factors on the island of Crete. Water-related ecosystem services provide a broad range of benefits, including the mitigation of extreme hydrometeorological events, the provision of water for various uses, the support of tourism, and the provision of cultural services. This study assesses the perceptions and accessibility of these services among communities located near the Alafiarou and Okpara dams in Benin and the Bagré dam in Burkina Faso. The methodology involved designing and implementing a questionnaire in KoboCollect, with trained agents deployed to conduct data collection at each of the three sites. Data analysis indicates that respondents identified biodiversity conservation and the provision of drinking water as the most crucial ecosystem services. Over two-thirds of participants reported observing both positive and negative changes in the services provided by rivers and in socio-economic activities since the construction of the dams. While the majority noted improvements in agriculture, irrigation, water quality, fisheries, and flow rates, other changes included biodiversity loss, a decrease in vegetation cover (notably trees and shrubs), an increase in the population of mosquitoes and other insects, and a decline in fishery resources downstream. Despite these challenges, local communities were strongly willing to participate in initiatives aimed at protecting and restoring river ecosystems and their related services. Full article

Objectives: Diabetes Mellitus involves demanding challenges that interfere with family functioning and routines. In turn, family and social context impacts individual glycemic control. This study aims to identify this recursive interplay, the mutual influences of family systems and diabetes management. Design: Data was collected through a cross-sectional design comparing patients, aged 22–55, with and without metabolic control. Methods: Participants filled out a set of self-report measures of sociodemographic, clinical and family systems assessment. Patients (91) were also invited to describe their perception about disease management interference regarding family functioning. We first examined the extent to which family variables grouped dataset to determine if there were similarities and dissimilarities that fit with our initial diabetic groups’ classification. Results: Cluster analysis results identify a two-cluster solution validating initial classification of two groups of patients: 49 with metabolic control (MC) and 42 without metabolic control (NoMC). Independent sample tests suggested statistically significant differences between groups in family subscales- family difficulties and family communication (p < 0.05). Binary logistic regression shed light on predictors of explained variance to no metabolic control, in four models: Sociodemographic, Clinical data, SCORE-15/Congruence Scale and Eating Behavior. Furthermore, groups differ on family support, level and sources of family conflict caused by diabetes management issues. Considering only patients who co-habit with a partner for more than one year (N = 44), NoMC patients score lower on marital functioning in all categories (p < 0.05). Discussion: Family-Chronic illness interaction plays a significant role in a patient’s adherence to treatment. This study highlights the Standards of Medical Care for Diabetes, considering caregivers and family members on diabetes care. Full article

Integrated Sampling Approaches Enhance Assessment of Saproxylic Beetle Biodiversity in a Mediterranean Forest Ecosystem (Sila National Park, Italy)

Saproxylic beetles are key bioindicators of forest ecosystem quality and play essential roles in deadwood decomposition and nutrient cycling. However, their populations are increasingly threatened by habitat fragmentation, deadwood removal, and climate-driven environmental changes. For this reason, an integrated sampling method can increase the detection of species with varying ecological traits. We evaluated the effectiveness of integrative sampling methodologies to assess saproxylic beetle diversity within Sila National Park, a Mediterranean forest ecosystem of high conservation value, specifically in two beech forests and four pine forests. The sampling methods tested included Pan Traps (PaTs), Malaise Traps (MTs), Pitfall Traps (PTs), Bait Bottle Traps (BBTs), and Visual Census (VC). All specimens were identified to the species level whenever possible, using specialized dichotomous keys and preserved in the Entomological Collection TB, Unical. Various trap types captured a different number of species: the PaT collected 32 species, followed by the PT with 24, the MT with 16, the VC with 7, and the BBT with 5 species. Interestingly, biodiversity analyses conducted using PAST software version 4.17 revealed that PaTs and MTs recorded the highest biodiversity indices. The GLMM analysis, performed using SPSS software 29.0.1.0, demonstrated that various traps attracted different species with different abundances. By combining multiple trapping techniques, we documented a more comprehensive community composition compared to single-method approaches. Moreover, PaTs, MTs, and PTs recorded 20%, 40%, and 33% of the Near Threatened species, respectively. We report new records for Sila National Park, including the LC species Pteryngium crenulatum (Curculionidae) and the NT species Grynocharis oblonga (Trogossitidae). For the first time in Calabria, the LC species Triplax rufipes (Erotylidae) and the NT species Oxypleurus nodieri (Cerambycidae) and Glischrochilus quadrisignatus (Nitidulidae) were collected. Our results emphasize the importance of method diversity in capturing species with distinct ecological requirements and highlight the relevance of saproxylic beetles as indicators of forest health. These findings support the adoption of multi-method sampling protocols in forest biodiversity monitoring and management programs, especially in biodiversity-rich and structurally heterogeneous landscapes. Background/Objectives: Frailty is a prevalent geriatric syndrome associated with impaired postural control and elevated fall risk. Although conventional exercise is a core strategy for frailty management, adherence remains limited. Virtual reality (VR)-based interventions have emerged as potentially engaging alternatives, but their effects on objective postural control and task-specific confidence in frail populations remain understudied. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a supervised VR training program using the Nintendo Ring Fit Plus™ on postural control, functional mobility, and balance confidence among frail community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Fifty-one adults aged ≥65 years classified as frail or prefrail were enrolled in a four-week trial. Participants were assigned to either a VR intervention group (n = 28) or control group (n = 23). Participants were non-randomly assigned based on availability and preference. Outcome measures were collected at baseline and post-intervention. Primary outcomes included center of pressure (CoP) metrics—sway area, mean velocity, and sway path. Secondary outcomes were the Timed Up and Go (TUG), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC), and Falls Efficacy Scale–International (FES-I). Results: After adjusting for baseline values, age, and BMI, the intervention group showed significantly greater improvements than the control group across all postural control outcomes. Notably, reductions in sway area, mean velocity, and sway path were observed under both eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions, with effect sizes ranging from moderate to very large (Cohen’s d = 0.57 to 1.61). For secondary outcomes, significant between-group differences were found in functional mobility (TUG), balance performance (BBS), and balance confidence (ABC), with moderate-to-large effect sizes (Cohen’s d = 0.53 to 0.73). However, no significant improvement was observed in fear of falling (FES-I), despite a small-to-moderate effect size. Conclusions: A supervised VR program significantly enhanced postural control, mobility, and task-specific balance confidence in frail older adults. These findings support the feasibility and efficacy of VR-based training as a scalable strategy for mitigating frailty-related mobility impairments. Full article

Terahertz (THz) communication is regarded as a key technology for achieving high-speed data transmission and wireless communication due to its ultra-high frequency and large bandwidth characteristics. In this study, we focus on a single-carrier THz communication system and propose a two-stage deep learning-based time-domain equalization method, specifically designed to mitigate the nonlinear distortions in such systems, thereby enhancing communication reliability and performance. The method adopts a progressive learning strategy, whereby global characteristics are initially captured before progressing to local levels. This enables the effective identification and equalization of channel characteristics, particularly in the mitigation of nonlinear distortion and random interference, which can otherwise negatively impact communication quality. In an experimental setting at a frequency of 230 GHz and a channel distance of 2.1 m, this method demonstrated a substantial reduction in the system’s bit error rate (BER), exhibiting particularly noteworthy performance enhancements in comparison to before equalization. To validate the model’s generalization capability, data collection and testing were also conducted at a frequency of 310 GHz and a channel distance of 1.5 m. Experimental results show that the proposed time-domain equalizer, trained using the two-stage DL framework, achieved significant BER reductions of approximately 92.15% at 230 GHz (2.1 m) and 83.33% at 310 GHz (1.5 m), compared to the system’s performance prior to equalization. The method exhibits stable performance under varying conditions, supporting its use in future THz communication studies. Full article

The Fernald Feed Materials Production Center (FMPC), located in Fernald, Ohio, USA, released radon (Rn) as a byproduct of the processing of uranium materials during the years from 1951 to 1989. Rn is a colorless, odorless gas that emits charged alpha radiation that interacts with cells in the lung and trachea-bronchial tree, leading to DNA damage, mutations, and tumor initiation. The purpose of this project was to use evidence collected by the Fernald Dosimetry Reconstruction Project and other sources to estimate the outdoor Rn exposure to individuals in the community immediately surrounding the FMPC during the years of plant operation. Using previously tabulated source terms, diffusion and meteorological data, and self-reported detailed residential histories, we estimated radon exposure for approximately 9300 persons who lived at more than 14,000 addresses. The results indicated that a portion of the population cohort experiences mean annual Rn exposure exceeding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) action limit of 4 pCiL−1. These exposure estimates support the analysis of the incidence of lung cancer in the Fernald Community Cohort (FCC). Full article
