Resilience and Mobbing Among Nurses in Emergency Departments: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Moral harassment (mobbing) in healthcare, particularly among nurses, remains a persistent issue with detrimental effects on mental health, resilience, and quality of life. Aim: We examine the relationship between the resilience of nurses working in Emergency Departments (EDs) and how these factors influence experiences of workplace mobbing. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 90 nurses from four public hospitals in Greece’s 5th Health District. Data were collected between October 2023 and March 2024 using the WHOQOL-BREF, Workplace Psychologically Violent Behaviors (WPVB) scale and the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). The sample consisted primarily of full-time nurses (84.3% female; mean age = 43.1 years), with 21.1% reporting chronic conditions. Most participants were married (80.0%) and had children (74.4%), typically two (56.1%). Statistical analyses—conducted using SPSS version 27.0—included descriptive statistics, Pearson and Spearman correlations, multiple linear regression, and mediation analysis, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Resilience was moderate (mean = 66.38%; Cronbach’s α = 0.93) and positively correlated with all WHOQOL-BREF domains—physical, psychological, social, and environmental (r = 0.30–0.40)—but not with the overall WHOQOL-BREF. The mean overall WHOQOL-BREF score was 68.4%, with the lowest scores observed in the environmental domain (mean = 53.76%). Workplace mobbing levels were low to moderate (mean WPVB score = 17.87), with subscale reliabilities ranging from α = 0.78 to 0.95. Mobbing was negatively associated with social relationships and the environmental WHOQOL-BREF (ρ = –0.23 to –0.33). Regression analysis showed that cohabitation and higher resilience significantly predicted better WHOQOL-BREF outcomes, whereas mobbing was not a significant predictor. Mediation analysis (bootstrap N = 5000) indicated no significant indirect effect of resilience in the relationship between mobbing and WHOQOL-BREF. Conclusions: Resilience was identified as a key protective factor for nurses’ quality of life in emergency care settings. Although workplace mobbing was present at low-to-moderate levels, it was negatively associated with specific WHOQOL-BREF domains. Enhancing mental resilience among nurses may serve as a valuable strategy to mitigate the psychological effects of moral harassment in healthcare environments. Full article

(1) The beach areas of Galveston, Texas, USA are heavily used for recreational activities and often experience elevated fecal indicator bacteria levels, representing a potential threat to ecosystem services, human health, and tourism-based economies that rely on suitable water quality. (2) During the span of 15 months (March 2022–May 2023), water samples that exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-accepted alternative Beach Action Value (BAV) for enterococci of 104 MPN/100 mL were analyzed via microbial source tracking (MST) through quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays. The Bacteroides HF183 and DogBact as well as the Catellicoccus LeeSeaGull markers were used to detect human, dog, and gull fecal sources, respectively. The qPCR MST data were then utilized in a quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) to assess human health risks. Additionally, samples collected in July and August 2022 were sequenced for 16S rRNA and matched with fecal sources through the Bayesian SourceTracker2 program. (3) Overall, 26% of the 110 samples with enterococci exceedances were positive for at least one of the MST markers. Gull was revealed to be the primary source of identified fecal contamination through qPCR and SourceTracker2. Human contamination was detected at very low levels (<1%), whereas dog contamination was found to co-occur with human contamination through qPCR. QMRA identified Campylobacter from canine sources as being the primary driver for human health risks for contact recreation for both adults and children. (4) These MST results coupled with QMRA provide important insight into water quality in Galveston that can inform future water quality and beach management decisions that prioritize public health risks. This study aims to assess the ecological and human health risks associated with four heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn) in the soil of a dumpsite in Targuist city, Morocco. In total, 16 surface soil samples were collected from the dumpsite and its nearby areas following leaching drain flows. The pollution load index (PLI), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), and potential ecological risk index (RI) were subsequently determined. In addition, hazard quotient (HQ) and health index (HI) were used to assess the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks associated with the soil heavy metal contents. The PLI indicated significant contamination by the studied heavy metals. On the other hand, the Igeo values suggested no Cr contamination, moderate contamination by Cu and Zn, and severe contamination by Cd. The RI indicated a dominant contribution from Cd, with minor contributions from Cu, Zn, and Cr accounting for 92.47, 5.44, 1.11, and 0.96%, respectively, to the potential ecological risk in the study area. The non-carcinogenic health risks associated with exposure of the nearby population to the soil heavy metals at the dumpsite and burned solid waste-derived air pollution were below the threshold value of 1 for both children and adults. Although carcinogenic risks were observed in the study area, they were acceptable for both children and adults according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). However, carcinogenic risks associated with Cr were unacceptable according to the Italian Legislation. Finally, strategies to mitigate the risks posed by the dumpsite were also discussed in this study. Full article

Pesticide residues pose risks to the environment and human health. Little is known about how tillage and straw management affect herbicide behavior in soil. This study investigated the effects of different tillage practices under varying straw incorporation scenarios on the degradation of five commonly used herbicides in a long-term experimental field located in the maize belt of Siping, Jilin Province. Post-harvest soil samples were analyzed for residual herbicide concentrations and basic soil physicochemical properties. A human health risk assessment was conducted, and a controlled incubation experiment was carried out to evaluate herbicide degradation dynamics under three management systems: straw incorporation with traditional rotary tillage (ST), straw incorporation with strip tillage (SS), and no-till without straw (CK). Residual concentrations of atrazine ranged from not detected (ND) to 21.10 μg/kg (mean: 5.28 μg/kg), while acetochlor showed the highest variability (2.29–120.61 μg/kg, mean: 25.26 μg/kg). Alachlor levels were much lower (ND–5.71 μg/kg, mean: 0.34 μg/kg), and neither nicosulfuron nor mesotrione was detected. Soil organic matter (17.6–20.89 g/kg) positively correlated with available potassium and acetochlor residues. Health risk assessments indicated negligible non-cancer risks for both adults and children via ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation. The results demonstrate that tillage methods significantly influence herbicide degradation kinetics, thereby affecting environmental persistence and ecological risks. Integrating straw with ST or SS enhanced the dissipation of atrazine and mesotrione, suggesting their potential as effective residue mitigation strategies. This study highlights the importance of tailoring tillage and straw management practices to pesticide type for optimizing herbicide fate and promoting sustainable agroecosystem management. Background: Childhood obesity disproportionately affects Hispanic families in the U.S. Although parenting practices and interventions appear to be viable approaches to lower the risk of childhood obesity, there is limited information on which parenting practices would be relevant and culturally appropriate for Hispanic families. This study aimed to document the health-related factors that impact Hispanic parenting practices to inform evidence-based parenting interventions to improve child health outcomes and reduce the risk of childhood obesity. Methods: We conducted cross-sectional, formative research guided by the COREQ checklist. Hispanic parents of elementary school-aged children were recruited using purposive and snowball sampling. Eligible parents completed a brief sociodemographic survey, the Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire (CFPQ), and an individual semi-structured interview. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were analyzed using a coding-based thematic approach. Results: Seventeen parents (88.2% female) participated in the study, and the majority reported Spanish as their preferred language (70.6%). According to parent-reported data, the children’s (52.9% female) mean age was 8.4 ± 1.5 years, and over half were classified as having overweight or obesity. The CFPQ analysis indicated that parents scored highest on subscales related to encouraging healthy eating and eating variety, a finding that was reinforced by interview data. Qualitative analysis identified four key themes: 1. parenting roles, routines, and strategies for promoting culturally appropriate and healthy meals; 2. beliefs of children’s health and weight; 3. beliefs on physical activity and screen time; and 4. environmental and social factors affecting access to healthy food and physical activity. Conclusions: Both quantitative and qualitative results emphasize that parents engage in healthy eating guidance and eating variety and are aware of the factors that impact parenting practices and their children’s health. To improve child health outcomes and reduce the risk of childhood obesity among Hispanic families, parenting interventions need to be culturally responsive and address the factors that influence parenting practices. The findings from this study highlight four key areas to prioritize when designing or adapting parenting interventions to lower the risk of childhood obesity among Hispanic families. Full article

Artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the largest source of global mercury (Hg) emissions. This study investigated Hg contamination in water, soil, sediment, fish, and cassava plants around ASGM sites in Gunung Pongkor, West Java, Indonesia. Hg concentration ranged from 0.06 to 4.49 µg/L in water; 0.420 to 144 mg/kg dw in soil; 0.920 to 150 mg/kg dw in sediment; 0.259 to 1.23 mg/kg dw in fish; 0.097 to 5.09 mg/kg dw in cassava root; and 0.350 to 8.84 mg/kg dw in cassava leaf. Geo-accumulation index (Igeo) analysis revealed moderate to heavy soil contamination upstream, likely due to direct ASGM input. In contrast, sediment Igeo values indicated heavy contamination downstream, suggesting Hg transport and sedimentation. Bioconcentration factors (BCFs) in fish were predominantly high in downstream and midstream areas, indicating enhanced Hg bioavailability. Bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) in cassava were higher in upstream areas. Health risk assessment, based on the Hazard Quotient (HQ) and Hazard Index (HI), identified ingestion as the primary exposure route, with children exhibiting significantly higher risks than adults. These findings highlight the significant Hg contamination associated with ASGM in Gunung Pongkor and emphasize the need for targeted mitigation strategies to protect human and environmental health. Despite spending a substantial proportion of their time indoors, the mental health effects of indoor air pollution on children and adolescents remain inadequately explored. This study aimed to elucidate the spatiotemporal variations and sociodemographic inequalities in exposure to multiple indoor pollutants and to assess their potential associations with depressive symptoms among school-aged children in Beijing. Using real-time portable monitors, concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), coarse particulate matter (PM10), carbon dioxide (CO2), formaldehyde (HCHO), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), temperature, and humidity in classrooms and bedrooms were measured during both weekdays and weekends. Moreover, substantial spatiotemporal heterogeneity was observed. It was found that concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and TVOC peaked in classrooms during weekday daytime, while CO2 levels were highest in bedrooms on weekend nights. Exposure levels were notably higher among children whose mothers had lower educational attainment and those living in recently renovated homes, indicating marked socio-demographic disparities. In multivariable logistic regression models, indoor exposure to CO2 and TVOC was significantly associated with increased odds of depressive symptoms. These findings highlight the critical need to improve indoor air quality through enhanced ventilation and the mitigation of emissions from indoor sources, particularly within school and residential settings. The results offer valuable empirical evidence to guide the development of targeted environmental interventions and public health policies designed to support and enhance the psychological well-being of children. Carbonaceous–siliceous–argillaceous rock-type uranium deposits, a major uranium resource in China, pose significant environmental risks due to heavy metal contamination. Geochemical investigations in the former Zoige uranium mine revealed elevated As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, U, and Zn concentrations in soils and sediments, particularly at river confluences and downstream regions, attributed to leachate migration from ore bodies and tailings ponds. Surface samples exhibited high Cd bioavailability. The integrated BCR and mineral analysis reveals that Acid-soluble and reducible fractions of Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb are governed by carbonate dissolution and Fe-Mn oxide dynamics via silicate weathering, while residual and oxidizable fractions show weak mineral-phase dependencies. Positive Matrix Factorization identified natural lithogenic, anthropogenic–natural composite, mining-related sources. Pollution assessments using geo-accumulation index and contamination factor demonstrated severe contamination disparities: soils showed extreme Cd pollution, moderate U, As, Zn contamination, and no Cr, Pb pollution (overall moderate risk); sediments exhibited extreme Cd pollution, moderate Ni, Zn, U levels, and negligible Cr, Pb impacts (overall extreme risk). USEPA health risk models indicated notable non-carcinogenic (higher in adults) and carcinogenic risks (higher in children) for both age groups. Ecological risk assessments categorized As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn as low risk, contrasting with Cd (extremely high risk) and sediment-bound U (high risk). These findings underscore mining legacy as a critical environmental stressor and highlight the necessity for multi-source pollution mitigation strategies. Full article

Deciduous teeth accumulate toxic metals until fully mineralized, making them a stable biological matrix for assessing chronic exposure during fetal and early postnatal life. Their metal content is influenced by environmental factors (e.g., industrial areas, mining sites) and individual factors (e.g., maternal diet, early nutrition, passive smoking). The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxic metal content in deciduous teeth and to identify factors contributing to its accumulation, as well as possible health implications. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines and following the PICO framework. Quality assessment was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist for quasi-experimental studies. The literature search was carried out in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases using the following keywords: deciduous, milk, primary, decidua, teeth, dentition, heavy metal, toxic metals. A total of 134 articles were initially identified, with 95 remaining after duplicate removal. After screening, 75 articles were excluded: 71 did not meet the inclusion criteria, 3 were not available in English, and 1 lacked full-text access. Ultimately, 20 studies were included in the review. Toxic metal concentrations were determined using various analytical techniques, mainly inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Higher levels of metals, especially lead, were observed in the teeth of children residing in industrial areas, near mines, or in regions affected by armed conflict. Although two out of five studies indicated a possible link between fathers’ smoking habits and elevated lead concentrations, no definitive relationship was established between secondhand smoke exposure and the levels of lead and cadmium found in dental tissue. Similarly, no definitive relationship was identified between mercury and lead content and the prevalence of autism. However, lower manganese levels were associated with the presence of autistic traits, weaker verbal performance, and reduced memory capacity. In conclusion, deciduous teeth represent a valuable biological material for assessing chronic prenatal and early postnatal exposure to toxic metals, which may serve as a starting point for further research into diseases of unknown etiology, such as autism, and in the future may have clinical significance in their prevention and treatment. And it is also important for monitoring environmental pollution levels. Full article

Toxoplasma gondii, Giardia intestinalis, and Cryptosporidium spp. are common pathogens that contaminate water and food. They can pose serious health risks, especially to vulnerable groups like immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, young children, and aging people. An all-encompassing approach to minimizing transmission involves identifying effective techniques for detecting, treating, and preventing protozoan parasites. This study confirmed the effectiveness of a Droplet Digital Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (dd RT-PCR) method for quickly and accurately identifying Toxoplasma gondii, Giardia intestinalis, and Cryptosporidium species in honeybees, honey, and pollen by using ISO 17468 and ISO 16140 standard guidelines. The study evaluated honeybee (n = 16), honey (n = 12), and pollen (n = 8) samples collected from various apiaries in Southern Italy between June and September 2023. The results showed that honeybees, honey, and pollen can be considered bioindicators of infections by T. gondii, G. intestinalis, and Cryptosporidium spp. Furthermore, pollen, along with honey to a lesser degree, can serve as significant indicators for evaluating food safety. Therefore, it is essential to monitor their quality and purity due to environmental influences. Full article

In order to evaluate spatial pollution patterns of the Shaying River and assess human health risk, thirty-three sampling points were established in different reaches of the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the Shaying River. According to the difference in human activities and land use types, the sampling points were artificially divided into three areas: mountainous area, urban area, and agricultural area. Water samples and sediments were collected at each sampling site, and the physicochemical parameters of the water at each site were measured simultaneously. The nutrient content of water samples and the heavy metal content of sediments were measured in the laboratory. The water pollution status of the Shaying River, as well as the status of heavy metal pollution and its associated risk to human health, were assessed and analyzed using the Water Quality Index (WQI) method, principal component analysis (PCA) method, potential ecological risk index method, and health risk assessment method, respectively. The results of the Water Quality Index indicated that the water quality of the Shaying River was moderate, with the reaches in the urban area being more polluted, the agricultural area being the second most polluted, and the mountainous area being in better condition. The results of the principal component analysis showed that soluble ions, organic matter, and nutrients were the main factors contributing to water pollution in the Shaying River, and there was significant variability in the factors contributing to water pollution in different regions, with human activities being the main cause of this variation. The results of a potential ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in sediments showed that heavy metal pollution in the water bodies of the Shaying River was serious and had significant spatial variability. Mountain reaches were the most polluted, followed by agricultural reaches, and urban reaches were the least polluted. The results of the health risk assessment showed that non-carcinogenic risks of heavy metals in different reaches of the Shaying River were within acceptable limits, while carcinogenic risks in agricultural areas exceeded thresholds. Among them, agricultural areas had the highest health risk, with Cr being the most carcinogenic heavy metal and Pb and Cr being the most non-carcinogenic heavy metals. The assessment also found that children’s carcinogenic risk was 8.4 times higher than adult males and 7.3 times higher than adult females. This study involves the typical diverse areas where the Shaying River passes, in order to provide data support and a theoretical basis for environmental protection of the Shaying River Basin. Assessment of the Human Health Risks Associated with Heavy Metals in Surface Water Near Gold Mining Sites in Côte d’Ivoire

Heavy metals are a major cause for concern in relation to water systems, due to their high toxicity at elevated levels. The metals can originate from both natural processes, including geological weathering and volcanic activity, as well as anthropogenic activi-ties such as industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, mining, and urbanization, which significantly contribute to water pollution and environmental degradation. The as-sessment of these risks is crucial for protecting public health, especially in populations reliant on contaminated water sources. Exposure to such contaminants can result in severe health consequences, including neurological impairments, organ deterioration, and an elevated risk of cancer. To conduct this assessment study, six surface water sampling sites were selected (i.e., S1 (Gobia), S2 (Kouamefla), S3 (Benkro), S4 (Dou-kouya), S5 (Doka), and S6 (Zengue)) due to their proximity to mining activities. We used the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) methods to estimate the levels of non-carcinogenic health risk associated with heavy metals. Then, the assessment of carcinogenic health risk was carried out using the Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) methods. First, the highest ILCR total values were observed in the Doya locality (i.e., 0.4237 for the children and 0.5650 for the adults) and during the great dry season (i.e., 0.4333 for the children and 0.5743 for the adults). These findings highlight that populations in this locale experience heightened exposure during the period of the Great Rainy Season. The results indicated that the population exposed to Cd and Hg may experience health concerns irrespective of season and locality. For As and Pb, risks are present in both seasons (i.e., Short Dry Season (SDS) and Short Rainy Season (SRS)). On the other hand, the HIs are well above 1, indicating that the population may be exposed to non-carcinogenic diseases associated with the metals, regardless of the season or locality. To further explore the results, the assessment by ILCR was em-ployed, which demonstrated that for all the designated localities, the ILCRs of As and Cd are well above 10−4 for the entire population, indicating that the population con-suming this water may develop major carcinogenic risks. In addition, the highest ILCR values were obtained for Cd, regardless of the age group. It should be noted that sea-sonal variation had no significant effect on the trend in ILCRs determined for the en-tire population. Full article

Several studies suggest a relationship between phthalates (PAEs) and allergic diseases in children. Therefore, we speculated that PAE exposure may be an important environmental factor causing allergic diseases. The present study employed meta-analysis and network toxicology to analyze the interactions and assess potential pathogenic pathways between prenatal and postnatal PAE exposure and childhood allergic diseases. This study found that prenatal PAEs exposure was positively associated with childhood wheezing and eczema (OR = 1.03, 1.05), and postnatal PAEs exposure was positively associated with childhood wheezing, eczema, and rhinitis (OR = 1.10, 1.05, 1.06). PAE exposure from dust may elicit distinct effects compared to direct exposure to PAEs. Furthermore, a large number of overlapping genes between disease targets and PAEs were identified. Enrichment analysis highlighted the association of PAE-targeted genes with biological pathways integral to allergic diseases. Molecular docking results indicated a strong link between the PAEs and the core proteins, such as SRC, AKT1, and HSP90AA1. These proteins are critically involved in the regulation of immune–inflammatory processes underlying allergic diseases. This discovery not only enhances our understanding of the relationship between environmental pollutants and child health but also provides a robust reference for experimental studies on the induction of childhood diseases by early-life exposure to environmental pollutants. Toxic elements are considered a significant threat to public health in oil-producing countries. Western Kazakhstan is experiencing serious environmental problems due to the development of the oil and gas industry. This study aimed to assess the concentrations of toxic trace elements—aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), beryllium (Be), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb)—in the hair of children residing in Kazakhstan’s oil and gas-producing region, and to evaluate the relationship between the concentration of toxic elements and the remoteness of their residence from oil and gas fields. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted involving 1595 school-aged children. Element levels in hair samples were quantified using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The association between trace element concentrations and residential distance from oil and gas fields was examined across three distance-based groups and further analyzed through multiple linear regression. The highest concentration of Al = 4.824 μg/g and Hg = 0.096 μg/g was found in the hair of children living close to oil and gas fields (0–16 km). A decrease in levels of Al (−0.072 (CI: −0.109; −0.036)) and Hg (−0.293 (CI: −0.343; −0.243)) is associated with increasing distance from oil and gas fields. As, Cd, and Pb had the lowest median concentrations in the hair of children living near oil and gas fields (0.030, 0.010, and 0.122 µg/g, respectively). There is a tendency for levels of As, Cd, and Pb to increase with distance from the fields (0.064 (CI: 0.039; 0.089), 0.093 (CI: 0.045; 0.141), and 0.244 (CI: 0.202; 0.287), respectively). Our findings indicate the need for biomonitoring of toxic elements to determine long-term temporal trends in the influence of toxic trace elements on the health of the child population of Western Kazakhstan. Air pollution is one of the most serious environmental threats, with particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5 representing its most harmful components, significantly affecting public health. These particles are primarily generated by transport, industry, residential heating, and agriculture, and are associated with increased incidence of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, asthma attacks, and heart attacks, as well as chronic illnesses and premature mortality. The most vulnerable groups include children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. This study focuses on the analysis of health risks associated with PM10 and PM2.5 air pollution in the city of Zvolen, which serves as a representative case due to its urban structure, traffic load, and industrial activity. The aim is to assess the current state of air quality, identify the main sources of pollution, and evaluate the health impacts of particulate matter on the local population. The results will be compared with selected Slovak cities—Banská Bystrica and Ružomberok—to understand regional differences in exposure and its health consequences. The results revealed consistently elevated concentrations of particulate matter (PM) across all analyzed cities, frequently exceeding the guideline values recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), although remaining below the thresholds set by current national legislation. The lowest average concentrations were recorded in the city of Zvolen (PM10: 20 μg/m3; PM2.5: 15 μg/m3). These lower values may be attributed to the location of the reference monitoring station operated by the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ), situated on J. Alexy Street in the southern part of the city—south of Zvolen’s primary industrial emitter, Kronospan. Due to predominantly southerly wind patterns, PM particles are transported northward, potentially leading to higher pollution loads in the northern areas of the city, which are currently not being monitored. We analyzed trends in PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations and their relationship with hospitalization data for respiratory diseases. The results indicate a clear correlation between the concentration of suspended particulate matter and the number of hospital admissions due to respiratory illnesses. Our findings thus confirm the significant adverse effects of particulate air pollution on population health and highlight the urgent need for systematic monitoring and effective measures to reduce emissions, particularly in urban areas.
