Persistent Traumatic Stress Exposure: Rethinking PTSD for Frontline Workers

Frontline workers across health, emergency, and social care sectors are repeatedly exposed to distressing events and chronic stressors as part of their occupational roles. Unlike single-event trauma, these cumulative exposures accrue over time, generating persistent psychological and physiological strain. Traditional diagnostic frameworks, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), were not designed to capture the layered and ongoing nature of this occupational trauma. This commentary introduces the concept of Persistent Traumatic Stress Exposure (PTSE), a framework that reframes trauma among frontline workers as an exposure arising from organisational and systemic conditions rather than solely an individual disorder. It aims to reorient understanding, responsibility, and intervention from a purely clinical lens toward systems, cultures, and organisational duties of care. PTSE is presented as an integrative paradigm informed by contemporary theory and evidence on trauma, moral injury, organisational stress, and trauma-informed systems. The framework synthesises findings from health, emergency, and social care settings, illustrating how repeated exposure, ethical conflict, and institutional pressures contribute to cumulative psychological harm. PTSE highlights that psychological injury may build across shifts, careers, and lifetimes, requiring preventive, real-time, and sustained responses. The framework emphasises that effective support is dependent on both organisational readiness, the structural conditions that enable trauma-informed work, and organisational preparedness, the practical capability to enact safe, predictable, and stigma-free responses to trauma exposure. PTSE challenges prevailing stigma by framing trauma as a predictable occupational hazard rather than a personal weakness. It aligns with modern occupational health perspectives by advocating for systems that strengthen psychological safety, leadership capability and access to support. By adopting PTSE, organisations can shift from reactive treatment models toward proactive cultural and structural protection, honouring the lived realities of frontline workers and promoting long-term wellbeing and resilience. Population aging is driving the need for unobtrusive, continuous monitoring solutions in residential care environments. Radio-frequency (RF)-based technologies such as Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar are particularly attractive for providing detailed information on presence and movement while preserving privacy. Building on a UWB–mmWave localization system deployed in a senior living residence, this paper focuses on the data-processing methodology for extracting quantitative mobility indicators from long-term indoor monitoring data. The system combines a device-free mmWave radar setup in bedrooms and bathrooms with a tag-based UWB positioning system in common areas. For mmWave data, an adaptive short-term average/long-term average (STA/LTA) detector operating on an aggregated, normalized radar energy signal is used to classify micro- and macromovements into bedroom occupancy and non-sedentary activity episodes. For UWB data, a partially constrained Kalman filter with a nearly constant velocity dynamics model and floor-plan information yields smoothed trajectories, from which daily gait- and mobility-related metrics are derived. The approach is illustrated using one-day samples from three users as a proof of concept. The proposed methodology provides individualized indicators of bedroom occupancy, sedentary behavior, and mobility in shared spaces, supporting the feasibility of combined UWB and mmWave radar sensing for longitudinal routine analysis in real-world elderly care environments. According to the degrowth concept, it is necessary to reduce material consumption and the use of natural resources in order to achieve a more sustainable and equitable economy. Consumers in wealthy countries should consider reducing their consumption levels, which can be hard to accept in these societies. The objective of the current study is to examine the role of environmental self-efficacy in building intention to reduce consumption voluntarily. The analysis was based on data collected from 705 respondents across Poland and Spain. To test the hypotheses, we used the PLS-SEM algorithm and IPMA. The current research results showed that both environmental concern and social norms lead to the intention to reduce consumption through environmental self-efficacy. The mediating effect of self-efficacy in the case of environmental concern’s influence on intention to reduce consumption is stronger in Poland than in Spain, whereas the same effect in the case of social norms’ impact on intention to reduce consumption is similar in both countries. We also observed that the direct effect of social norms on intention to reduce consumption was noticeable in both countries separately but not found after combining both countries’ samples. Methane emissions from underground coal mines are a significant source of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and a major safety concern. In highly methane-prone operations, a large proportion of emissions comes from low-content abandoned mine methane (LCAMM) accumulated in post-mining goafs, where concentrations usually stay below 30% CH4. Building on the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) REM project, this paper presents a cost–benefit analysis of a comprehensive scheme for capturing, transporting, and utilising LCAMM from post-mining goafs for electricity generation. The concept involves long-reach directional boreholes drilled behind isolation dams, a dedicated methane-reduced drainage system connected to a surface methane drainage station, and four 2 MWe gas engines designed to run on a 20–40% CH4 mixture. Greenhouse gas performance is evaluated by comparing a “business-as-usual” scenario in which post-mining methane is combusted in gas engines to produce electricity without further GHG cost–benefit consideration. The results indicate that the project can achieve a positive net present value, highlighting the role of LCAMM utilisation for methane-intensive coal mines. The paper also explores the monetisation of non-emitted methane using the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), as well as social cost benchmarks and penalty levels consistent with the emerging EU Methane Emissions Regulation (EU MER). As universities increasingly work towards the adoption of their third mission—fostering entrepreneurship and innovation—the concept of the Entrepreneurial University (EntUni) emphasizes the need to cultivate a defined set of entrepreneurial competencies in students, such as opportunity recognition, risk-taking, perseverance, self-efficacy, and adaptability. The purpose of this study is to identify which entrepreneurial competencies are most critical for student readiness within the context of an Entrepreneurial University. However, limited consensus remains on which competencies are most essential. This study identifies the entrepreneurial competencies most critical for students within an Entrepreneurial University context through a mixed-methods approach. A student survey assesses self-perceived competencies; a stakeholder survey captures the perspectives of faculty, industry experts, and entrepreneurs; and qualitative interviews with industry professionals explore best practices for competency development. Findings reveal six core competencies that EntUnis should help students cultivate: proactiveness, perseverance, grit, risk propensity, self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial intention. Industry experts further highlight the importance of teamwork, ethical and sustainable thinking, and ambiguity tolerance—competencies often underdeveloped in academic environments. The study also identifies a disconnect between entrepreneurial education and practical application, with many students demonstrating high entrepreneurial intention but limited participation in start-up activities. These insights offer actionable implications for educators, policymakers, and university administrators. Overall, the study highlights the importance of experiential learning, academia-industry collaboration, and structured competency-building to enhance entrepreneurial readiness. By addressing these gaps, EntUnis can better equip students to drive innovation, economic growth, and societal impact. Full article

Videogames (VGs) are highly attractive for children and young people. Although videogames were once viewed mainly as sources of distraction and leisure, they are now widely recognised as powerful tools for competence development across diverse domains. Designing and implementing a videogame is even more appealing for children and novice students than merely playing it, but developing programming competencies using a text-based language often constitutes a significant barrier to entry. This article presents the implementation and evaluation of a videogame development experience with university students using the Unity engine and its Visual Scripting block-based tool. Students worked in teams and successfully completed videogame projects, demonstrating substantial gains in programming and game construction skills. The adopted methodology facilitated learning, collaboration, and engagement. Building on a quasi-experimental design that compared a prior unit based on C# and MonoGame with a subsequent unit based on Unity Visual Scripting, the study analyses differences in performance, development effort, and motivational indicators. The results show statistically significant improvements in grades, reduced development time for core mechanics, and higher self-reported confidence when Visual Scripting is employed. The evidence supports the view of Visual Scripting as an effective educational strategy to introduce programming concepts without the syntactic and semantic barriers of traditional text-based languages. The findings further suggest that Unity Visual Scripting can act as a didactic bridge towards advanced programming, and that its adoption in secondary and primary education is promising both for reinforcing traditional subjects (history, language, mathematics) and for fostering foundational programming and videogame development skills in an inclusive manner. This article presents a case study from a Social and Health Care School in Denmark, where a rooftop garden was designed to promote student health and support nature-based teaching across subject areas. A novel aspect of the project is the formal integration of the garden into teaching, implying that its long-term impact may extend beyond the students to the end-users they will later encounter in nursing homes and hospitals nationwide. This study applies the Evidence-Based Health Design in Landscape Architecture (EBHDL) process model, encompassing evidence collection, programming, and concept design, with the University of Copenhagen acting in a consultancy role. A co-design process with students and teachers was included as a novel source of case-specific evidence. Methodologically, this is a participatory practice-based case study focusing on the full design and construction processes, combining continuous documentation with reflective analysis of ‘process insights,’ generating lessons learned from the application of the EBHDL process model. This study identifies two categories of lessons learned. First, general insights emerged concerning governance, stakeholder roles, and the critical importance of site selection, procurement, and continuity of design responsibility. Second, specific insights were gained regarding the application of the EBHDL model, including its alignment with Danish and international standardised construction phases. These insights are particularly relevant for project managers in nature-based initiatives. The results also show how the EBHDL model aligns with Danish and international standardised construction phases, offering a bridge between health design methods and established building practice. The case focuses on the EBHDL process rather than verified outcomes and demonstrates how evidence-based and participatory approaches can help structure complex design processes, facilitate stakeholder engagement, and support decision-making in institutional projects. This paper is a theoretical contribution that introduces a new reasoning framework for SAT solving based on resolvable networks (RNs). RNs provide a graph-based representation of propositional satisfiability in which clauses are interpreted as directed reaches between disjoint subsets of Boolean variables (nodes). Building on this framework, we introduce a novel RN-based SAT solver, called RN-Solver, which replaces local assignment-driven branching by global reasoning over token distributions. Token distributions, interpreted as truth assignments, are generated by monotone CNF–DNF dualization applied to white (all-positive) clauses. New white clauses are derived via resolution along private-pivot chains, and the solver’s progression is governed by a taxonomy of token distributions (black-blocked, terminal, active, resolved, and non-resolved). The main results establish the soundness and completeness of the RN-Solver. Experimentally, the solver performs very well on pigeonhole formulas, where the separation between white and black clauses enables effective global reasoning. In contrast, its current implementation performs poorly on random 3-SAT instances, highlighting both practical limitations and significant opportunities for optimization and theoretical refinement. The presented RN-Solver implementation is a proof-of-concept which validates the underlying theory rather than a state-of-the-art competitive solver. One promising direction is the generalization of strongly connected components from directed graphs to resolvable networks. Finally, the token-based perspective naturally suggests a connection to token-superposition Petri net models. Full article

Promoting the value realization of ecological products is a central issue in practicing the concept that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets.” This is particularly urgent for alpine regions, which are vital ecological security barriers but face stringent developmental constraints. This study takes Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province as a case study. It establishes a Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP) accounting framework tailored to the characteristics of alpine ecosystems and conducts continuous empirical accounting for the period 2020–2023. The findings reveal that: (i) The total GEP of Golog is immense (reaching 655.586 billion yuan in 2023) but exhibits significant dynamic non-stationarity driven by climatic fluctuations, with a coefficient of variation as high as 11.48%. (ii) The value structure of the GEP is highly unbalanced, with regulatory services contributing over 97.6%. Water conservation and biodiversity protection are the two pillars, highlighting its role as a supplier of public ecological products and the predicament of market failure. (iii) The spatial distribution of GEP is highly heterogeneous. Maduo County, comprising 34% of the prefecture’s land area, contributes 48% of its total GEP, with its value per unit area being 1.68 times that of Gande County, revealing the spatial agglomeration of key ecosystem services. To address the dynamic, structural, and spatial constraints identified by these quantitative features, this paper proposes synergistic realization pathways centered on “monetizing regulatory services,” “precision policy regulation,” and “capacity and institution building”. The aim is to overcome the systemic bottlenecks—“difficulties in measurement, trading, coarse compensation, and weak incentives”—in alpine ecological functional zones. This provides a systematic theoretical and practical solution for fostering a virtuous cycle between ecological conservation and regional sustainable development. Full article

Amid China’s “Manufacturing Power” push, full-chain digital restructuring in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area remains hampered by mismatches among technology, organization, and environment. We therefore explored how shop floor actors perceive and shape this Technology–Organization–Environment (TOE) interplay. Semi-structured interviews with frontline operators, maintainers, and supply chain staff from GBA manufacturers were inductively coded, yielding 36 concepts, 10 categories, and 3 core TOE aggregates that were woven into a grounded model. The analysis shows that industrial internet platforms and smart equipment only create value when matched by flexible shop floor structures, cross-department data protocols, and skilled teams; otherwise, data silos, simulation–production deviations, and “buy-but-not-build” procurement stall adoption. Market pressure for customized, short-lead-time products and divergent municipal pilot policies further intensify the TOE balancing act, particularly for SMEs with weak absorptive capacity. By revealing a grassroots “technology-driven → organization-adapted → environment-adjusted” spiral that is moderated by frontline feedback, the study extends the TOE framework to micro-level, regional innovation theory and offers policy–practice levers for differentiated, cross-city manufacturing upgrading. The complexity and interconnectivity of modern automotive systems are rapidly increasing, particularly with the rise of distributed and cooperative driving functions. These developments increase exposure to a range of disruptions, from technical failures to cyberattacks, and demand a shift towards resilience-by-design. This study addresses the early integration of resilience into the automotive design process by proposing a structured method for identifying gaps and eliciting resilience requirements. Building upon the concept of resilience scenarios, the approach extends traditional hazard and threat analyses as defined in ISO 26262, ISO 21448 and ISO/SAE 21434. Using a structured, graph-based modeling method, these scenarios enable the anticipation of functional degradation and its impact on driving scenarios. The methodology helps developers to specify resilience requirements at an early stage, enabling the integration of resilience properties throughout the system lifecycle. Its practical applicability is demonstrated through an example in the field of automotive cybersecurity. This study advances the field of resilience engineering by providing a concrete approach for operationalizing resilience within automotive systems engineering. Full article

The Potocki family of the Pilawa coat of arms was among the most powerful noble lineages of the former Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, and its history is closely intertwined with that of Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. In the late seventeenth century, Feliks Kazimierz Potocki (1630–1702) founded the town of Krystynopol (now Chervonohrad), named in honor of his wife, Krystyna Lubomirska. The residence, passed down through successive generations of the Potocki family, was transformed in the mid-eighteenth century into an impressive Baroque palace-and-garden complex designed by Pierre Ricaudde Tirregaille, becoming a model example of the magnate cultural landscape on the border of present-day Poland and Ukraine. In the centuries that followed, the estate changed owners multiple times, suffered devastation during the world wars, and in the Soviet period housed the Museum of Atheism. Today, the partially restored palace accommodates a small regional museum. Although in the eighteenth century the palace was surrounded by an extensive Italian-French style garden with water canals, ponds, and fountains, the area has since been built over with public-utility buildings. This study presents a concept for the development of the surviving elements of the historical palace park. The project is based on historical analyses, field research, site inspections, interviews with museum staff and town residents, as well as a detailed dendrological inventory including an assessment of tree health. The study area covers 4.71 ha, and the current tree stand is composed mainly of Salix alba, Populus nigra, Populus alba, Betula pendula, Quercus robur, Fraxinus excelsior, Ulmus laevis, Acer negundo, and Acer pseudoplatanus. Recent advancements in prosthetic technology have increasingly focused on enhancing dexterity and autonomy through intelligent control systems. Vision-based approaches offer promising results for enabling prosthetic hands to interact more naturally with diverse objects in dynamic environments. Building on this foundation, the paper presents a vision-guided grasping algorithm for a prosthetic hand, integrating perception, planning, and control for dexterous manipulation. A camera mounted on the set up captures the scene, and a Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH)-based vision algorithm is employed to segment an object for grasping and define its bounding box. Grasp contact points are then computed by generating candidate trajectories using Rapidly-exploring Random Tree Star (RRT*) algorithm, and selecting fingertip end poses based on the minimum Euclidean distance between these trajectories and the object’s point cloud. Each finger’s grasp pose is determined independently, enabling adaptive, object-specific configurations. Damped Least Square (DLS) based Inverse kinematics solver is used to compute the corresponding joint angles, which are subsequently transmitted to the finger actuators for execution. Our intention in this work was to present a proof-of-concept pipeline demonstrating that fingertip poses derived from a simple, computationally lightweight geometric representation, specifically an AABB-based segmentation can be successfully propagated through per-finger planning and executed in real time on the Linker Hand O7 platform. The proposed method is validated in simulation, and experimental integration on a Linker Hand O7 platform. Full article

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used as rubric-guided graders for short-answer exams, but their decisions can be unstable across prompts and vulnerable to answer-side prompt injection. In this paper, we study SteadyEval, a guardrailed exam-grading pipeline in which an adversarially trained LoRA filter (SteadyEval-7B-deep) preprocesses student answers to remove answer-side prompt injection, after which the original Mistral-7B-Instruct rubric-guided grader assigns the final score. We build two exam-grading pipelines on top of Mistral-7B-Instruct: a baseline pipeline that scores student answers directly, and a guardrailed pipeline in which a LoRA-based filter (SteadyEval-7B-deep) first removes injection content from the answer and a downstream grader then assigns the final score. Using two rubric-guided short-answer datasets in machine learning and computer networking, we generate grouped families of clean answers and four classes of answer-side attacks, and we evaluate the impact of these attacks on score shifts, attack success rates, stability across prompt variants, and alignment with human graders. On the pooled dataset, answer-side attacks inflate grades in the unguarded baseline by an average of about +1.2 points on a 1–10 scale, and substantially increase score dispersion across prompt variants. The guardrailed pipeline largely removes this systematic grade inflation and reduces instability for many items, especially in the machine-learning exam, while keeping mean absolute error with respect to human reference scores in a similar range to the unguarded baseline on clean answers, with a conservative shift in networking that motivates per-course calibration. Chief-panel comparisons further show that the guardrailed pipeline tracks human grading more closely on machine-learning items, but tends to under-score networking answers. These findings are best interpreted as a proof-of-concept guardrail and require per-course validation and calibration before operational use. Full article

This paper addresses the problem of imbalance between coastal and inland areas and recognises the reuse of abandoned buildings as an evolutionary regeneration strategy which, through specific interventions linked by a system of routes for tourism and sport, can gradually trigger sustainable development on a regional scale. It presents research conducted in recent years on behalf of local administrations and continued in national and European projects. The reference context is the Abruzzo region, where coastal, hilly and mountainous areas are a short distance apart and include both densely built-up and populated urban centres and small depopulated towns surrounded by landscapes of high environmental value. The objective is to define, through the responsible use of built resources, viable and sustainable strategies for regeneration and rebalancing oriented towards the concept of transformative resilience. The methodology adopted is divided into phases and includes both theoretical developments and case study applications according to an approach that networks building restoration and reuse interventions in the region. The key results consist of defining a reuse logic that considers the regional territory as a whole, linking different resources, functions and environments. This logic, which envisages the organisation of new functions on a regional scale, emphasises the capacity of building reuse to produce positive effects on the territory and trigger socio-economic development dynamics. This research forms part of the experience underlying a project of significant national interest (PRIN 2022 TRIALs), which will provide guidelines for activating the transformative resilience capacities of inland areas of central Italy.
