Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is essential for global food security, especially in tropical regions. As an important genetic resource, its genetics plays a key role in crop breeding, enabling the development of more productive and pest- and disease-resistant varieties. Scientometrics, which quantitatively analyzes the production and impact of scientific research, is crucial for understanding trends in cassava genetics. This study aimed to apply bibliometric methods to conduct a scientific mapping analysis based on yearly publication trends, paper classification, author productivity, journal impact factor, keywords occurrences, and omic approaches to investigate the application of genetics to the species from 1960 to 2022. From the quantitative data analyzed, 3246 articles were retrieved from the Web of Science platform, of which 654 met the inclusion criteria. A significant increase in scientific production was observed from 1993, peaking in 2018. The first article focused on genetics was published in 1969. Among the most relevant journals, Euphytica stood out with 36 articles, followed by Genetics and Molecular Research (n = 30) and Frontiers in Plant Science (n = 25). Brazil leads in the number of papers on cassava genetics (n = 143), followed by China (n = 110) and the United States (n = 75). The analysis of major methodologies (n = 185) reveals a diversified panorama during the study period. Morpho-agronomic descriptors persisted from 1978 to 2022; however, microsatellite markers were the most widely used, with 102 records. Genomics was addressed in 87 articles, and transcriptomics in 65. By clarifying the current landscape, this study supports cassava conservation and breeding, assists in public policy formulation, and guides future research in the field. Full article

To minimize the deleterious effects of oxidative stress and improve oocyte competence, we assessed the impact of melatonin during in vitro pre-maturation (pre-IVM) in bovine cumulus–oocyte complexes (COCs). We compared three groups: control (conventional IVM), pre-IVM control (without melatonin), and pre-IVM + MTn (with melatonin). The analyses included levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial activity, oocyte lipid content, and the expression of genes related to oxidative stress and lipid metabolism in oocytes and cumulus cells. We also examined embryo quality by evaluating kinetics of development and gene expression. The pre-IVM + MTn group exhibited an increase (p ≤ 0.05) in ROS levels and a decrease (p ≤ 0.05) in lipid content, while maintaining mitochondrial activity similar (p > 0.05) to that of the control group. Regarding gene expression, the effect of pre-IVM, independent of melatonin, was characterized by a decrease in FABP3 transcripts in cumulus cells and reductions in GSS and NFE2L2 transcripts in oocytes (p ≤ 0.05). The pre-IVM + MTn group also displayed a decrease (p ≤ 0.05) in CAT and SOD2 transcript levels. In terms of embryonic development, the pre-IVM + MTn group achieved a higher blastocyst rate on D7 (p ≤ 0.05) compared to the control group (30.8% versus 25.8%), but with similar rates (p > 0.05) to the pre-IVM control group (30.8% versus 35.9%). However, there was a decrease in the levels of the PLAC8 transcript. This study indicates that, under the conditions tested, melatonin did not significantly benefit oocyte competence. Full article

UNS S41003 is a low-cost, low-carbon ferritic stainless steel that exhibits moderate corrosion resistance but limited mechanical performance. This study evaluates the electrochemical behavior of untreated and thermomechanically treated UNS S41003 samples. Corrosion tests were conducted in acidic electrolytes with varying pH to simulate aggressive environments relevant to industrial and structural applications where exposure to acidic media and corrosive pollutants occurs. Potentiodynamic polarization curves for all samples displayed passive regions typically associated with protective oxide film formation; however, localized pitting corrosion was detected post-test. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated a marked decrease in corrosion resistance as pH decreased. The corrosion resistance of the treated alloy remained comparable to that of the untreated condition, indicating that thermomechanical processing did not detrimentally affect passivity or corrosion performance under the tested conditions. The literature suggests that the applied treatment enhances mechanical properties, supporting the potential use of this alloy in structural components subjected to acidic environments requiring a balance of mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. Oral mucositis (OM) is a severe inflammatory condition of the oral mucosa that is commonly associated with cancer therapies. Traditional treatments typically have limited efficacy and significant side effects, necessitating alternative approaches. Nanobased drug delivery systems (DDSs) present promising solutions, enhancing therapeutic outcomes while minimizing side effects. This review aims to evaluate the use of nanobased DDSs to treat OM. To reach these aims, an extensive literature review was conducted using the following databases: BVS, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The search strategy included the keywords “microparticles,” “nanoparticles,” “drug delivery system,” “oral mucositis,” “therapy,” and “treatment,” combined with the Boolean operators “AND” and “OR.” After applying filters for language, relevance, full-text availability, exclusion of review articles, and removal of duplicates, a total of 32 articles were selected for analysis. Of the 32 studies included in this review, 25 employed polymeric micro- or nanosystems for the treatment of OM. Regarding the stage of investigation, 10 studies were conducted in vitro, 16 were conducted in vivo, and 6 corresponded to clinical trials. Compared with conventional drug delivery approaches, most of these studies reported improved therapeutic outcomes. These findings highlight the potential of nanosystems as innovative strategies for enhancing OM treatment. Nonetheless, challenges in large-scale manufacturing, including reproducibility and safety, and the limited number of clinical trials warrant careful consideration. Future research with larger clinical trials is essential to validate these findings and effectively guide clinical practice. Full article

The retrofitting of legacy systems enables upgrades that extend the lifespan of outdated equipment, improve efficiency, and reduce environmental impacts. This manuscript builds on existing approaches to retrofitting legacy systems using Industry 4.0 technologies. Therefore, it explores how the proposed modernization envisions the transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0, which emphasizes human-centric approaches, sustainability, and resilience. Tools such as RAMI 4.0 (a reference architecture model for Industry 4.0), Lean Six Sigma (a methodology for process improvement), and Big Data analytics are highlighted throughout the text as essential for optimizing processes and ensuring alignment with global challenges, including resource efficiency and environmental sustainability. This work addresses both conceptual and technical aspects of system modernization. It provides a comprehensive framework for retrofitting systems and integrating advanced technologies such as digital twins. These efforts ensure that industries are prepared for the evolving demands of Industry 4.0 and beyond. Full article

This study evaluated the effect of pearl millet subjected to different processing on the intestinal health of rats. The animals were fed a standard iron-free diet (28 days) (hemoglobin depletion: 8.65 + 1.40 g/dL of hemoglobin). Subsequently, they were divided into four groups for hemoglobin repletion (21 days): standard diet + ferrous sulfate (SD + FS); standard diet + non-germinated open-pan cooked millet flour (SD + NGOPCMF); standard diet + germinated open-pan cooked millet flour (SD + GOPCMF); and standard diet + extrusion-cooked millet flour (SD + ECMF). Hemoglobin level did not differ among groups. The SD + NGOPCMF, SD + GOPCMF and SD + ECMF groups demonstrated a higher Chao index in the microbiome and a higher number and area of goblet cells and longitudinal muscle layer width. The SD + NGOPCMF and SD + GOPCMF groups demonstrated increased cecum weight, crypt depth, crypt thickness, and circular muscle layer width; lower fecal pH; and a higher relative abundance of Bacteroidota, while the SD + FS group showed the highest abundance of Actinobacteriota. The SD + GOPCMF group stood out for showing the lowest fecal pH, better α-diversity (Chao and Shannon index), and the highest width of the longitudinal muscle layer. In conclusion, pearl millet subjected to different processing, mainly germination, has the potential to improve the composition of the intestinal microbiota and the intestinal morphology in rats induced to iron deficiency. Targeting the Oviduct Microbiota and Redox Status: A Novel Perspective on Probiotic Use in Laying Hens

(1) Background: The goal of the present study was to evaluate whether the supplementation with a multi-species probiotic in the diet of laying hens can change the microbiota and health status of the oviduct. (2) Methods: A total of 60 cages housing lightweight laying hens (36 weeks old) were randomly assigned to the following two different treatments: a control group fed a diet without probiotic, and a treatment group receiving diets supplemented with 50 g/ton of probiotics. The trial lasted for 26 weeks, after which five layers were slaughtered per treatment for oviduct (magnum) assessment, focusing on microbiome composition, oxidant and antioxidant status, and morphological analyses. Additionally, intestinal (jejunum) samples were collected to determine oxidant and antioxidant status. (3) Results: Probiotic supplementation resulted in lower counts of organisms from the RB41 order (p = 0.039) and Burkholderia genus (p = 0.017), and a total reduction in Bacillus and Corynebacterium (p = 0.050) compared to the control treatment. Genera Burkholderia (p = 0.017), Corynebacterium (p = 0.050), and Bacillus (p = 0.050) were also lower with the probiotic supplementation in relation to the control. Genera Epulopiscium (p = 0.089), Flavobacterium (p = 0.100), Ruminococcus (p = 0.089), and Staphylococcus (p = 0.100) tended to be lower in the probiotic group compared to the control. No significant differences were found between treatments for oviduct lesions. Probiotic treatment resulted in a higher protein thiol level in the intestine compared to the control (p < 0.001). However, the use of probiotics tended to reduce glutathione S-transferase levels in the oviduct compared to the control (p = 0.068). (4) Conclusions: These results suggest that dietary supplementation with probiotics can modulate the oviduct microbiota and improve the antioxidant status of laying hens, without causing tissue damage. Further research is warranted to explore the long-term implications of these changes on reproductive performance and egg quality. Full article

Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) is a major oilseed crop rich in phytosterols and tocopherols, compounds associated with functional and nutritional properties of vegetable oils. This study aimed to apply, for the first time, Independent Component Analysis (ICA) to discriminate the composition of phytosterols (β-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol) and tocopherols (α, β, γ, δ) in 20 soybean genotypes—14 non-transgenic and six transgenic—cultivated in two major producing regions of Paraná state, Brazil (Londrina and Ponta Grossa). Lipophilic compounds were extracted from soybean seeds, quantified via gas chromatography and HPLC, and statistically analyzed using ICA with the JADE algorithm. The extracted independent components successfully differentiated soybean varieties based on phytochemical profiles. Notably, transgenic cultivars from Ponta Grossa exhibited higher levels of total tocopherols, including α- and β-tocopherol, while conventional cultivars from both regions showed elevated phytosterol content, particularly campesterol and stigmasterol. ICA proved to be a powerful unsupervised method for visualizing patterns in complex compositional data. These findings highlight the significant influence of genotype and growing region on the nutraceutical potential of soybean, and support the use of multivariate analysis as a strategic tool for cultivar selection aimed at enhancing functional quality in food applications. Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are widely applied to reduce particle concentrations. However, the performance of ESPs is impaired in the nanosized diameter range due to the difficulty in electrically charging these particles. The present work evaluated the inclusion of a wire screen, perpendicular to the airflow, as an additional collecting electrode of a single-stage wire-plate ESP containing two collecting plates and a single discharge wire. ESP performance was evaluated in terms of voltage, air velocity and electrode positioning in relation to the beginning of the collecting plate (inlet spacings of 1.5, 10 and 23 cm). When compared to theoretical prediction, the penetration results presented a decay for larger particles not predicted by the diffusion battery model. It was observed that the inclusion of the wire screen increased the removal of ultrafine particles and that the overall collection efficiencies increased up to 70% in the operating conditions evaluated. Moreover, the central positioning of the electrodes (inlet spacing of 10 cm) achieved the highest collection efficiencies at high voltages, but the final positioning (inlet spacing of 23 cm) presented a better performance at higher air velocities. Therefore, the wire screen can be an alternative to enhance nanoparticle collection. Full article

Background/Objectives: Curcumin (CUR) is well known for its therapeutic properties, particularly attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in managing chronic diseases such as arthritis. While CUR application for biomedical purposes is well known, the phytochemical has several restrictions given its poor water solubility, physicochemical instability, and low bioavailability. These limitations have led to innovative formulations, with nanocarriers emerging as a promising alternative. For this reason, this study aimed to address the potential advantages of associating CUR with nanocarrier systems in managing arthritis through a scoping review. Methods: A systematic literature search of preclinical (in vivo) and clinical studies was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (December 2024). General inclusion criteria include using CUR or natural derivatives in nano-based formulations for arthritis treatment. These elements lead to the question: “What is the impact of the association of CUR or derivatives in nanocarriers in treating arthritis?”. Results: From an initial 536 articles, 34 were selected for further analysis (31 preclinical investigations and three randomized clinical trials). Most studies used pure CUR (25/34), associated with organic (30/34) nanocarrier systems. Remarkably, nanoparticles (16/34) and nanoemulsions (5/34) were emphasized. The formulations were primarily presented in liquid form (23/34) and were generally administered to animal models through intra-articular injection (11/31). Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA) was the most frequently utilized among the various models to induce arthritis-like joint damage. The findings indicate that associating CUR or its derivatives with nanocarrier systems enhances its pharmacological efficacy through controlled release and enhanced solubility, bioavailability, and stability. Moreover, the encapsulation of CUR showed better results in most cases than in its free form. Nonetheless, most studies were restricted to the preclinical model, not providing direct evidence in humans. Additionally, inadequate information and clarity presented considerable challenges for preclinical evidence, which was confirmed by SYRCLE’s bias detection tools. Conclusions: Hence, this scoping review highlights the anti-arthritic effects of CUR nanocarriers as a promising alternative for improved treatment. Full article

Euterpe precatoria Mart. is an increasingly important palm for subsistence and income generation in central and western Amazonia with growing demand for its fruit pulp, which is an alternative source of açaí juice for domestic and international markets. This study synthesizes current knowledge on its systematics, ecology, fruit production in natural populations, fruit quality, uses, population management, and related areas, identifying critical research gaps. A systematic literature survey was conducted across databases including Web of Science, Scopus, Scielo, CAPES, and Embrapa. Of 1568 studies referencing Euterpe, 273 focused on E. precatoria, with 90 addressing priority themes. Genetic diversity studies suggest the E. precatoria may represent a complex of species. Its population abundance varies across habitats: the highest variability occurs in terra firme, followed by baixios and várzeas. Várzeas exhibit greater productivity potential, with more bunches per plant and higher fruit weight than baixios; no production data exist for terra firme. Additionally, E. precatoria has higher anthocyanin content than E. oleracea, the primary commercial açaí species. Management of natural populations and cultivation practices are essential for sustainable production; however, studies in these fields are still limited. The information is crucial to inform strategies aiming to promote the sustainable production of the species. Full article

This study investigates the production and economic feasibility of biochar for smallholder and family farms in Central Amazonia, with potential implications for other tropical regions. The costs of construction of a prototype mobile kiln and biochar production were evaluated, using small-sized biomass from acai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) agro-industrial residues as feedstock. The biochar produced was characterised in terms of its liming capacity (calcium carbonate equivalence, CaCO3eq), nutrient content via organic fertilisation methods, and ash analysis by ICP-OES. Field trials with cowpea assessed economic outcomes, as well scenarios of fractional biochar application and cost comparison between biochar production in the prototype kiln and a traditional earth-brick kiln. The prototype kiln showed production costs of USD 0.87–2.06 kg−1, whereas traditional kiln significantly reduced costs (USD 0.03–0.08 kg−1). Biochar application alone increased cowpea revenue by 34%, while combining biochar and lime raised cowpea revenues by up to 84.6%. Owing to high input costs and the low value of the crop, the control treatment generated greater net revenue compared to treatments using lime alone. Moreover, biochar produced in traditional kilns provided a 94% increase in net revenue compared to liming. The estimated externalities indicated that carbon credits represented the most significant potential source of income (USD 2217 ha−1). Finally, fractional biochar application in ten years can retain over 97% of soil carbon content, demonstrating potential for sustainable agriculture and carbon sequestration and a potential further motivation for farmers if integrated into carbon markets. Public policies and technological adaptations are essential for facilitating biochar adoption by small-scale tropical farmers. Full article

Cone Penetration Tests with pore pressure measurements (CPTu) are widely used in geotechnical site investigations due to their high-resolution profiling capabilities. However, traditional interpretation methods—such as the Soil Behavior Type Index (Ic)—often fail to capture the internal heterogeneity typical of mining tailings deposits. This study presents a machine learning-based approach to enhance stratigraphic interpretation from CPTu data. Four unsupervised clustering algorithms—k-means, DBSCAN, MeanShift, and Affinity Propagation—were evaluated using a dataset of 12 CPTu soundings collected over a 19-year period from an iron tailings dam in Brazil. Clustering performance was assessed through visual inspection, stratigraphic consistency, and comparison with Ic-based profiles. k-means and MeanShift produced the most consistent stratigraphic segmentation, clearly delineating depositional layers, consolidated zones, and transitions linked to dam raising. In contrast, DBSCAN and Affinity Propagation either over-fragmented or failed to identify meaningful structures. The results demonstrate that clustering methods can reveal behavioral trends not detected by Ic alone, offering a complementary perspective for understanding depositional and mechanical evolution in tailings. Integrating clustering outputs with conventional geotechnical indices improves the interpretability of CPTu profiles, supporting more informed geomechanical modeling, dam monitoring, and design. The approach provides a replicable methodology for data-rich environments with high spatial and temporal variability. Full article

Widely employed in diverse engineering applications, stiffened steel plates are often subjected to biaxial compressive loads. Under these conditions, buckling may occur, initially within the elastic range but potentially progressing into the elasto-plastic domain, which can lead to permanent deformations or structural collapse. To increase the ultimate buckling stress of plates, the implementation of longitudinal and transverse stiffeners is effective; however, this complexity makes analytical stress calculations challenging. As a result, numerical methods like the Finite Element Method (FEM) are attractive alternatives. In this study, the Constructal Design method and the Exhaustive Search technique were employed and associated with the FEM to optimize the geometric configuration of stiffened plates. A steel plate without stiffeners was considered, and 30% of its volume was redistributed into stiffeners, creating multiple configuration scenarios. The objective was to investigate how different arrangements and geometries of stiffeners affect the ultimate buckling stress under biaxial compressive loading. Among the configurations evaluated, the optimal design featured four longitudinal and two transverse stiffeners, with a height-to-thickness ratio of 4.80. This configuration significantly improved the performance, achieving an ultimate buckling stress 472% higher than the unstiffened reference plate. In contrast, the worst stiffened configuration led to a 57% reduction in performance, showing that not all stiffening strategies are beneficial. These results demonstrate that geometric optimization of stiffeners can significantly enhance the structural performance of steel plates under biaxial compression, even without increasing material usage. The approach also revealed that intermediate slenderness values lead to better stress distribution and delayed local buckling. Therefore, the methodology adopted in this work provides a practical and effective tool for the design of more efficient stiffened plates. Full article

Background: Trichosporon spp. are opportunistic fungi, capable of causing infection, especially in critically ill individuals who often use broad-spectrum antibiotics, invasive devices, and have comorbidities. Objectives The aim of this study was to analyze individuals’ clinical characteristics, evaluate tolerance to biocides, as well as biofilm formation and efflux pump activity in isolates of Trichosporon asahii. Methods: Clinical isolates of T. asahii collected between 2020 and 2023 from both hospitalized and non-hospitalized individuals, of both sexes, regardless of age, were tested for tolerance to sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, benzalkonium chloride, and ethyl alcohol. Efflux pump activity was also assessed using ethidium bromide, and biofilm formation was measured with the Safranin test. Clinical parameters such as outcomes, source, and length of hospitalization were analyzed through electronic medical records. Results: A total of 37 clinical isolates of T. asahii were identified. Thirty-three (83.8%) isolates were from hospitalized individuals, with 81.82% collected in ICUs, an average hospital stay of 35 days, and a mortality rate of 51.6%. The tested strains displayed the largest mean inhibition zone for 2% sodium hypochlorite, indicating lower tolerance. A high level of efflux pump expression was detected among clinical isolates. Biofilm formation was detected in 25/67.5% of the isolates. Conclusions: These findings highlight the clinical relevance of T. asahii, particularly in critically ill individuals, and underscore the pathogen’s ability to tolerate biocides, express efflux pumps, and form biofilms, all of which may contribute to its persistence and pathogenicity in hospital environments. Enhanced surveillance and effective microbial control measures are essential to mitigate the risks associated with T. asahii infections. Full article
