Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as a promising technology for harvesting mechanical energy via contact electrification (CE) at diverse interfaces, including solid–liquid, liquid–liquid, and gas–liquid phases. This review systematically explores fluid-based TENGs (Flu-TENGs), introducing a foundational and novel classification framework based on direct versus indirect charge transfer to the charge-collecting electrode (CCE). This framework addresses a critical gap by providing the first unified analysis of charge transfer mechanisms across all major fluid interfaces, establishing a clear design principle for future device engineering. We comprehensively compare the underlying mechanisms and performance outcomes, revealing that direct charge transfer consistently delivers superior energy conversion—with specific studies achieving up to 11-fold higher current and 8.8-fold higher voltage in solid–liquid TENGs (SL-TENGs), 60-fold current and 3-fold voltage gains in liquid–liquid TENGs (LL-TENGs), and 34-fold current and 10-fold voltage enhancements in gas–liquid TENGs (GL-TENGs). Indirect mechanisms, relying on electrostatic induction, provide stable Alternating Current (AC) output ideal for low-power, long-term applications such as environmental sensors and wearable bioelectronics, while direct mechanisms enable high-efficiency Direct Current (DC) output suitable for energy-intensive systems including soft actuators and biomedical micro-pumps. This review highlights a paradigm shift in Flu-TENG design, where the deliberate selection of charge transfer pathways based on this framework can optimize energy harvesting and device performance across a broad spectrum of next-generation sensing, actuation, and micro-power systems. By bridging fundamental charge dynamics with application-driven engineering, this work provides actionable insights for advancing sustainable energy solutions and expanding the practical impact of TENG technology. Background: Stapes prostheses represent one of the earliest and most widely applied “biomedical actuators” designed to restore hearing in patients with otosclerosis. Unlike conventional actuators, which convert energy into motion, stapes prostheses function as passive or smart micro-actuators, transmitting and modulating acoustic energy through the ossicular chain. Objective: This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of stapes prostheses from an engineering and biomedical perspective, emphasizing design principles, materials science, and recent innovations in smart actuators based on shape-memory alloys combined with surgical applicability. Methods: A narrative review of the evolution of stapes prostheses was consolidated by institutional surgical experience. Comparative evaluation focused on materials (Teflon, Fluoroplastic, Titanium, Nitinol) and design solutions (manual crimping, clip-on, heat-activated prostheses). Special attention was given to endoscopic stapes surgery, which highlights the ergonomic and functional requirements of new device designs. Results: Traditional fluoroplastic and titanium pistons provide reliable sound conduction but require manual crimping, with a higher risk of incus necrosis and displacement. Innovative prostheses, particularly those manufactured from nitinol, act as self-crimping actuators activated by heat, improving coupling precision and reducing surgical trauma. Emerging designs, including bucket-handle and malleus pistons, expand applicability to complex or revision cases. Advances in additive manufacturing and middle ear cement fixation offer opportunities for customized, patient-specific actuators. Conclusions: Stapes prostheses have evolved from simple passive pistons to innovative biomedical actuators exploiting shape-memory and biocompatible materials. Future developments in stapes prosthesis design are closely linked to 3D printing technologies. These developments have the potential to enhance acoustic performance, durability, and patient outcomes, thereby bridging the gap between otologic surgery and biomedical engineering. Full article

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) have shown great potential in the field of soft robotics due to their unique actuation capabilities. Despite the growing number of experimental studies in the soft robotics field, theoretical research remains limited. In this paper, a dynamic model of a bionic arm using an LCE fiber as artificial muscle is established, which exhibits periodic oscillation controlled by periodic illumination. Based on the assumption of linear damping and angular momentum theorem, the dynamics equation of the model oscillation is derived. Then, based on the assumption of linear elasticity model, the periodic spring force of the fiber is given. Subsequently, the evolution equations for the cis number fraction within the fiber are developed, and consequently, the analytical solution for the light-excited strain is derived. Following that, the dynamics equation is numerically solved, and the mechanism of the controllable oscillation is elucidated. Numerical calculations show that the stable oscillation period of the bionic arm depends on the illumination period. When the illumination period aligns with the natural period of the bionic arm, the resonance is formed and the amplitude is the largest. Additionally, the effects of various parameters on forced oscillation are analyzed. The results of numerical studies on the bionic arm can provide theoretical support for the design of micro-machines, bionic devices, soft robots, biomedical devices, and energy harvesters. Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) piezoelectric ceramics are widely used functional materials due to their strong and stable piezoelectric properties. A leveling method based on lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric ceramics is proposed for the high level of accuracy required in microelectromechanical fields such as aerospace, industrial robotics, biomedical, and photolithography. A leveling mechanism consisting of core components such as piezoelectric ceramic actuators and sensors is designed. The closed-loop leveling of the working platform is performed using the electromechanical coupling effect of the PZT piezoelectric material. Combined with the theory of the dielectric inverse piezoelectric effect in electric fields, a simulation is used to analyze the four force and deformation cases generated by the drive legs when the load is attached at different positions of the working platform, and the leveling is realized by applying the drive voltage to generate micro-motion displacement. Simulation and calculation results show that the leveling method can reduce the tilt angle of the working platform by 60% when the driving voltage is in the range of 10~150 V. The feasibility of the leveling method and the uniformity of the theoretical calculation and simulation are verified. Full article

Light-actuated microbots have been studied as a viable tool for interacting with micro/nano environments. Considering their applicability to a wide range of biomedical applications, novel designs, fabrication techniques, and control methodologies are being developed. Especially, micro/nanoscale three-dimensional fabrication techniques have opened many possibilities for developing microbots with complex geometries using resins as materials. Here, we developed microbots that can be actuated with tightly focused laser beams to be used in targeted drug delivery, cell poking, and cell characterization studies. These microbots were fabricated in batches using two-photon polymerization (TPP). Each microbot utilizes a deposited metal layer inside its body to manipulate convective microfluidic flows. Additionally, micro-sized end effectors allow them to make measurable physical contact with biological objects. Their expected performance was evaluated using numerical simulations with the use of multiphysics software. Furthermore, laser-induced loading and unloading of micro-sized cargo show their capability for in vitro applications. Full article

This research focuses on the development, design, implementation, and testing (with complete hardware and software integration) of a 6D Electromagnetic Actuation (EMA) system for the precise control and navigation of micro/nanorobots (MNRs) in high-viscosity fluids, addressing critical challenges in targeted drug delivery within complex biological environments, such as blood vessels. The primary objective is to overcome limitations in the actuation efficiency, trajectory stability, and accurate path-tracking of MNRs. The EMA system utilizes three controllable orthogonal pairs of Helmholtz coils to generate uniform magnetic fields, which magnetize and steer MNRs in 3D for orientation. Another three controllable orthogonal pairs of Helmholtz coils generate uniform magnetic fields for the precise 3D orientation and steering of MNRs. Additionally, three orthogonal pairs of Maxwell coils generate uniform magnetic field gradients, enabling efficient propulsion in dynamic 3D fluidic environments in real time. This hardware configuration is complemented by three high-resolution digital microscopes that provide real-time visual feedback, enable the dynamic tracking of MNRs, and facilitate an effective closed-loop control mechanism. The implemented closed-loop control technique aimed to enhance trajectory accuracy, minimize deviations, and ensure the stable movement of MNRs along predefined paths. The system’s functionality, operation, and performance were tested and verified through various experiments, focusing on hardware, software integration, and the control algorithm. The experimental results show the developed system’s ability to activate MNRs of different sizes (1 mm and 0.5 mm) along selected desired trajectories. Additionally, the EMA system can stably position the MNR at any point within the 3D fluidic environment, effectively counteracting gravitational forces while adhering to established safety standards for electromagnetic exposure to ensure biocompatibility and regulatory compliance. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer films, renowned for their exceptional piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric properties, offer a versatile platform for the development of cutting-edge micro-scale functional devices, enabling innovative applications ranging from energy harvesting and sensing to medical diagnostics and actuation. This paper presents an in-depth review of the material properties, fabrication methodologies, and characterization of PVDF films. Initially, a comprehensive description of the physical, mechanical, chemical, thermal, electrical, and electromechanical properties is provided. The unique combination of piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and ferroelectric properties, coupled with its excellent chemical resistance and mechanical strength, makes PVDF a highly valuable material for a wide range of applications. Subsequently, the fabrication techniques, phase transitions and their achievement methods, and copolymerization and composites employed to improve and optimize the PVDF properties were elaborated. Enhancing the phase transition in PVDF films, especially promoting the high-performance β-phase, can be achieved through various processing techniques, leading to significantly enhanced piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties, which are essential for diverse applications. This concludes the discussion of PVDF material characterization and its associated techniques for thermal, crystal structure, mechanical, electrical, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, electromechanical, and pyroelectric properties, which provide crucial insights into the material properties of PVDF films, directly impacting their performance in applications. By understanding these aspects, researchers and engineers can gain valuable insights into optimizing PVDF-based devices for various applications, including energy-harvesting, sensing, and biomedical devices, thereby driving advancements in these fields. This review summarizes the fundamental concepts, recent advancements, and emerging trends in the field of stimuli-responsive hydrogels. While numerous reviews exist on this topic, the field continues to evolve dynamically, and certain research directions are often overlooked. To address this, we classify stimuli-responsive hydrogels based on their response mechanisms and provide an in-depth discussion of key properties and mechanisms, including swelling kinetics, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility/biodegradability. We then explore hydrogel design, synthesis, and structural engineering, followed by an overview of applications that are relatively well established from a scientific perspective, including biomedical uses (biosensing, drug delivery, wound healing, and tissue engineering), environmental applications (heavy metal and phosphate removal from the environment and polluted water), and soft robotics and actuation. Additionally, we highlight emerging and unconventional applications such as local micro-thermometers and cell mechanotransduction. This review concludes with a discussion of current challenges and future prospects in the field, aiming to inspire further innovations and advancements in stimuli-responsive hydrogel research and applications to bring them closer to the societal needs. Piezoelectric ultrasonic motors (USMs) are actuators that use ultrasonic frequency piezoelectric vibration-generated waves to transform electrical energy into rotary or translating motion. USMs receive more attention because they offer distinct qualities over traditional magnet-coil-based motors, such as miniaturization, great accuracy, speed, non-magnetic nature, silent operation, straightforward construction, broad temperature operations, and adaptability. This review study focuses on the principle of USMs and their classifications, characterization, fabrication methods, applications, and future challenges. Firstly, the classifications of USMs, especially, standing-wave, traveling-wave, hybrid-mode, and multi-degree-of-freedom USMs, are summarized, and their respective functioning principles are explained. Secondly, finite element modeling analysis for design and performance predictions, conventional and nano/micro-fabrication methods, and various characterization methods are presented. Thirdly, their advantages, such as high accuracy, small size, and silent operation, and their benefits over conventional motors for the different specific applications are examined. Fourthly, the advantages and disadvantages of USMs are highlighted. In addition, their substantial contributions to a variety of technical fields like surgical robots and industrial, aerospace, and biomedical applications are introduced. Finally, their future prospects and challenges, as well as research directions in USM development, are outlined, with an emphasis on downsizing, increasing efficiency, and new materials. Full article

Mobile microrobots are of great scientific significance. However, external actuation and control methods are still challenging to conduct. We present a single carbon nanocoil (CNC) microrobot induced by an NIR laser beam, capable of light-driven locomotion and photothermal actuation. This research demonstrates that CNC-based microrobots roll away from the focal spot when the laser beam is focused near the CNC. The maximum translational distance of a CNC microrobot increases with an increase in laser power, and the direction of motion is guided by controlling the focusing position of NIR. CNC-based microrobots can load and transport multiple cells under NIR light irradiation, resulting from the temperature gradient generated by photothermal conversion, which causes thermophoresis. The hydrophobic surface and unique helical structure of CNCs are beneficial to the underwater drag reduction in CNC microrobots’ motion and the adhesion of cells on CNC microrobots. Therefore, CNC microrobots, as cell vectors driven by a laser beam, may find applications in a wide range of biomedical applications. In addition, the rotation of a CNC powered by a laser beam provides promising prospects for the future of nanomechanical devices using a carbon nanocoil as a micro/nanomotor. Full article

Magnetically actuated microrobots have become a research hotspot in recent years due to their tiny size, untethered control, and rapid response capability. Moreover, an increasing number of researchers are applying them for micro-/nano-manipulation in the biomedical field. This survey provides a comprehensive overview of the recent developments in magnetic microrobots, focusing on materials, propulsion mechanisms, design strategies, fabrication techniques, and diverse micro-/nano-manipulation applications. The exploration of magnetic materials, biosafety considerations, and propulsion methods serves as a foundation for the diverse designs discussed in this review. The paper delves into the design categories, encompassing helical, surface, ciliary, scaffold, and biohybrid microrobots, with each demonstrating unique capabilities. Furthermore, various fabrication techniques, including direct laser writing, glancing angle deposition, biotemplating synthesis, template-assisted electrochemical deposition, and magnetic self-assembly, are examined owing to their contributions to the realization of magnetic microrobots. The potential impact of magnetic microrobots across multidisciplinary domains is presented through various application areas, such as drug delivery, minimally invasive surgery, cell manipulation, and environmental remediation. This review highlights a comprehensive summary of the current challenges, hurdles to overcome, and future directions in magnetic microrobot research across different fields. Full article

Compared to other actuating methods, acoustic actuators offer the distinctive capability of the contactless manipulation of small objects, such as microscale and nanoscale robots. Furthermore, they have the ability to penetrate the skin, allowing for the trapping and manipulation of micro/nanorobots that carry therapeutic agents in diverse media. In this review, we summarize the current progress in using acoustic actuators for the manipulation of micro/nanorobots used in various biomedical applications. First, we introduce the actuating method of using acoustic waves to manipulate objects, including the principle of operation and different types of acoustic actuators that are usually employed. Then, applications involving manipulating different types of devices are reviewed, including bubble-based microrobots, bubble-free robots, biohybrid microrobots, and nanorobots. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future perspectives for the development of the field. Full article

Exceptionally fast temperature-responsive, mechanically strong, tough and extensible monolithic non-porous hydrogels were synthesized. They are based on divinyl-crosslinked poly(N-isopropyl-acrylamide) (PNIPAm) intercalated by hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). HPMC was largely extracted after polymerization, thus yielding a ‘template-modified’ PNIPAm network intercalated with a modest residue of HPMC. High contents of divinyl crosslinker and of HPMC caused a varying degree of micro-phase-separation in some products, but without detriment to mechanical or tensile properties. After extraction of non-fixed HPMC, the micro-phase-separated products combine superior mechanical properties with ultra-fast T-response (in 30 s). Their PNIPAm network was highly regular and extensible (intercalation effect), toughened by hydrogen bonds to HPMC, and interpenetrated by a network of nano-channels (left behind by extracted HPMC), which ensured the water transport rates needed for ultra-fast deswelling. Moreover, the T-response rate could be widely tuned by the degree of heterogeneity during synthesis. The fastest-responsive among our hydrogels could be of practical interest as soft actuators with very good mechanical properties (soft robotics), while the slower ones offer applications in drug delivery systems (as tested on the example of Theophylline), or in related biomedical engineering applications. Four-dimensional (4D) printing is an innovative additive manufacturing technology used to fabricate structures that can evolve over time when exposed to a predefined environmental stimulus. 4D printed objects are no longer static objects but programmable active structures that accomplish their functions thanks to a change over time in their physical/chemical properties that usually displays macroscopically as a shapeshifting in response to an external stimulus. 4D printing is characterized by several entangled features (e.g., involved material(s), structure geometry, and applied stimulus entities) that need to be carefully coupled to obtain a favorable fabrication and a functioning structure. Overall, the integration of micro-/nanofabrication methods of biomaterials with nanomaterials represents a promising approach for the development of advanced materials. The ability to construct complex and multifunctional triggerable structures capable of being activated allows for the control of biomedical device activity, reducing the need for invasive interventions. Such advancements provide new tools to biomedical engineers and clinicians to design dynamically actuated implantable devices. In this context, the aim of this review is to demonstrate the potential of 4D printing as an enabling manufacturing technology to code the environmentally triggered physical evolution of structures and devices of biomedical interest.
