This study numerically investigates the suitability of biomass particles of varying diameters as alternative reducing agents in the blast furnace raceway zone, where harsh conditions can create internal gradients affecting conversion. An internally resolved 1D Lagrangian particle model, fully integrated into the open-source CFD toolbox OpenFOAM®, is used to model temperature and species gradients within thermally thick particles. The particle model is coupled with the surrounding Eulerian phase and includes drying, pyrolysis, oxidation, and gasification submodels. Results show that only biomass particles smaller than 250 μm fully convert in the raceway, while larger particles carry unconverted material beyond, potentially reducing blast furnace efficiency. Co-firing large-sized straw biomass in pulverized coal boilers is a potential pathway for carbon emission reduction in China’s thermal power plants. However, experimental data on large-sized straw combustion under pulverized coal boiler combustion conditions are critically lacking. This study selected typical large-sized wheat straw particles. Employing a two-mode experimental setup in a drop tube furnace (DTF) system simulating pulverized coal boiler conditions, we systematically investigated the combustion behavior and alkali metal release characteristics of this large-sized straw biomass, with combustion processes summarized for diverse particle types. The findings reveal asynchronous combustion progression across particle surfaces due to heterogeneous mass transfer and gas diffusion; unique behaviors distinct from denser woody biomass, including bending deformation, fiber branching, and fragmentation, occur; significant and morphology-specific deformations occur during devolatilization; fragmentation universally produces particles of varied shapes (needle-like, flaky, blocky, semi-tubular) during char combustion; and potassium release exceeds 35% after complete devolatilization and surpasses 50% at a burnout degree exceeding 80%. This work provides essential experimental data on the fundamental combustion characteristics and alkali metal release of large-sized wheat straw particles under pulverized coal boiler combustion conditions, offering engineering application guidance for the direct co-firing of large-sized flexible straw biomass in pulverized coal boilers. Based on the low-carbon transition needs of coal-fired boilers, this study conducted industrial trials of direct biomass co-firing on a 620 t/h high-temperature, high-pressure circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler, gradually increasing the co-firing ratio. It used compressed biomass pellets, achieving stable 20 wt% (weight percent) operation. By analyzing boiler parameters and post-shutdown samples, the comprehensive impact of biomass co-firing on the boiler system was assessed. The results indicate that biomass pellets were blended with coal at the last conveyor belt section before the furnace, successfully ensuring operational continuity during co-firing. Further, co-firing biomass up rates of to 20 wt% do not significantly impact the fuel combustion efficiency (gaseous and solid phases) or boiler thermal efficiency and also have positive effects in reducing the bottom ash and SOx and NOx emissions and lowering the risk of low-temperature corrosion. The biomass co-firing slightly increases the combustion share in the dense phase zone and raises the bed temperature. The strong ash adhesion characteristics of the biomass were observed, which were overcome by increasing the ash blowing frequency. Under 20 wt% co-firing, the annual CO2 emissions reductions can reach 130,000 tons. This study provides technical references and practical experience for the engineering application of direct biomass co-firing in industrial-scale CFB boilers. Full article

The amount of waste generated by society is constantly increasing. Consequently, there is a need to develop new and better methods of treating it. A significant part of municipal waste is biowaste, which can be treated as a source of valuable resources such as nutrients, organic matter, and energy. The present work aims to determine the properties of the tested household biowaste and the possibility of using it as feedstock in slow pyrolysis to obtain biochar. The slow pyrolysis process of the biowaste was carried out in an electrically heated Horizontal Tube Furnace (HTF) at temperatures of 400 °C, 500 °C, and 600 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere. The analysis showed that depending on the type and composition of the biowaste, its properties are different. All the biowaste tested has a high moisture content (between 63.51% and 81.53%), which means that the biowaste needs to be dried before the slow pyrolysis process. The characteristics of kitchen biowaste are similar to those of food waste studied by other researchers in different regions of the world. In addition, the properties of kitchen biowaste are similar to those of the typical biomasses used to produce biochar via slow pyrolysis, such as wood, almond shells, and rice husks. Both kinds of garden biowaste tested may have been contaminated (soil, rocks) during collection, which affected the high ash content of spring (17.75%) and autumn (43.83%) biowaste. This, in turn, affected all the properties of the garden biowaste, which differed significantly from both the literature data of other garden wastes and from the properties of typical biomass feedstocks used to produce biochar in slow pyrolysis. For all biowaste tested, it was shown that as the pyrolysis temperature increases, the yield of biochar decreases. The maximum mass yield of biochar for kitchen, spring garden, and autumn garden biowaste was 36.64%, 66.53%, and 66.99%, respectively. Comparing the characteristics of biowaste before slow pyrolysis, biochar obtained from kitchen biowaste had a high carbon content, fixed carbon, and a higher HHV. In contrast, biochar obtained from garden biowaste had a lower carbon content and a lower HHV. Full article

This research paper provides new insights into the impact of accelerated mineralization of alkaline waste materials on the physical and mechanical behavior of low-carbon cement-based mortars. Standardized eco-cement mortars were prepared by replacing Portland cement with 7% and 20% proportions of three alkaline waste materials (white ladle furnace slag, biomass ash, and fine concrete waste fraction) that had been previously carbonated in a static reactor at predefined humidity and CO2 concentration. The mortars’ physical (total/capillary water absorption, electrical resistivity) and mechanical properties (compressive strength up to 90 d of curing) were analyzed, and their microstructures were examined using mercury intrusion porosimetry and computed tomography. The results reveal that carbonated waste materials generate a greater heat of hydration and have a lower total and capillary water absorption capacity, while the electrical resistivity and compressive strength tests generally indicate that they behave similarly to mortars not containing carbonated minerals. Mercury intrusion porosimetry (microporosity) indicates an increase in total porosity, with no clear refinement versus non-carbonated materials, while computed tomography (macroporosity) reveals a refinement of the pore structure with a significant reduction in the number of larger pores (>0.09 mm3) and intermediate pores (0.001–0.09 mm3) when carbonated residues are incorporated that varies depending on waste material. The construction and demolition waste (CCDW-C) introduced the best physical and mechanical behavior. These studies confirm the possibility of recycling carbonated waste materials as low-carbon supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). Full article

The metallurgical industry has been constantly changing over the past decades. On the one hand, there has been the modernization and improvement of production efficiency, and on the other hand, we have seen a reduction in the negative impact on the environment. The possibility of using alternative materials and the circular economy is significant in this area. In the present work, research was carried out to determine the usefulness of biomass in the form of fruit seeds for the recycling processes of metal-bearing raw materials, including slags from copper production processes, which are characterized by a much higher metal content than ores of this metal. The main carbon-bearing material/reducer used in the process is metallurgical coke. The transformation of the European metal industry has been observed in recent years. To carry out the physicochemical characterization of the tested material, a research methodology was adopted using tools to determine the stability of behavior at high temperatures, chemical composition, and volatile components. Thermodynamic analysis was carried out, indicating the theoretical course of reactions of individual system components and thermal effects, allowing a determination of whether the assumed reactions are endothermic or exothermic. The planned research ends with the reduction process in conditions similar to those carried out in industrial conditions. Enforced by the guidelines for reducing CO2 emissions, it contributes to a significant reduction in the demand for coke. This paper addresses the issue of determining the feasibility of using selected bioreducers, including cherry stones, to verify their suitability in the process of reducing copper oxides. The study used copper slag with a composition similar to slags generated at the copper production stage in a flash furnace. The results obtained in reducing copper content above 98 wt. % indicate the great potential of this type of bioreducer. It should be noted that, unlike conventional fossil fuels, the use of cherry stones to reduce copper slag can be considered an environmentally neutral method of carbon offset. The resulting secondary slag is a waste product that can be stored and disposed of without harmful environmental effects due to its low lead content. An additional advantage is the relatively wide availability of cherry stones. Full article

Co-combustion of coal and biomass for power generation technology could not only realize the effective utilization of biomass energy, but also reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. In this study, a system of a settling furnace with high temperature is applied to study the ash deposition of the co-combustion of coal and salix. The effects of salix blending ratio, flue gas temperature, and wall temperature on ash deposition are studied. The micro-morphology, elemental content, and compound composition of the ash samples are characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), respectively. The results show that with the biomass blending ratio increasing from 5% to 30%, the content of Ca in ash increases from 8.92% to 20.59%. In particular, when the salix blending ratio exceeds 20%, plenty of the low-melting-point compounds of Ca aggravate the melting adhesion of ash particles, causing serious ash accumulation. Therefore, the salix blending radio is recommended to be limited to no more than 20%. With the increase in flue gas temperature, ash particles melt and stick, forming ash accumulation. Under the condition of flue gas temperature ≥ 1200 °C, a serious ash particle melting flow occurs, and CaO covers the surface of the ash particles, making the ash particles adhere to each other, which makes them difficult to remove. Therefore, controlling the flue gas temperature below 1200 °C is necessary. When the temperature crosses the threshold range of 500–600 °C, the Ca and K contents increase by 35.6% and 41.9%, respectively, while the Si content decreases by 9.7%. The increase in K and Ca content leads to the thickening of the initial layer of the ash deposit, which facilitates the formation of the sintered layer of the deposited ash. Meanwhile, the reduction in Si content leads to the particles’ adhesion, which markedly increases the degree of ash slagging. Once the wall temperature exceeds 600 °C, severe ash slagging becomes a threat to the safe operation of the boiler. Therefore, the wall temperature should not exceed 600 °C. Full article

Brazil has made progress in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management through national legislation focused on integrated waste handling. However, challenges persist, particularly regarding MSW overproduction. A sustainable alternative is Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF), generated from MSW with or without biomass addition. To be viable for combustion, RDF must meet established energy and environmental quality standards. In this context, a mathematical model based on fuzzy logic was developed to classify RDF quality and support decision-making. Five RDF samples were tested, evaluating their Lower Heating Value (LHV), chlorine, and mercury contents using calorimetry, atomic absorption, and X-ray fluorescence. Results indicate that RDF produced solely from MSW tends to have inadequate LHV, necessitating drying pretreatment. Even with the addition of peanut shells, the highest classification achieved was “Regular”, suggesting limited suitability for combustion in furnaces or boilers without pretreatment. Since the general composition of MSW in Brazil is consistent with the characteristics analyzed, RDF may remain unviable for energy recovery under similar conditions. Economic feasibility studies on drying are recommended, especially in urban centers with limited landfill space. Full article

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) technology converts biomass into a carbon-rich, oxygen-containing solid fuel. Most studies have focused on hydrochar produced under laboratory conditions, leaving a gap in understanding the performance of industrially produced hydrochar. This study comprehensively analyzes three types of industrially produced hydrochar for blast furnace (BF) injection. The results indicate that hydrochar has a higher volatile and lower fixed carbon content. It has a lower high heating value (HHV) than coal and contains more alkali matter. Nevertheless, hydrochar exhibits a better grindability and combustion performance than coal. Blending hydrochar with anthracite significantly enhances the combustion reactivity of the mixture. The theoretical conversion rate calculations reveal a synergistic effect between hydrochar and anthracite during co-combustion. Environmental benefit calculations show that replacing 40% of bituminous coal with hydrochar can reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 145 kg/tHM, which is equivalent to an annual reduction of 528 kton of CO2 and 208 kton of coal in BF operations. While industrially produced hydrochar meets BF injection requirements, its low ignition point and high explosivity necessitate the careful control of the blending ratio. Full article

Modern industrial systems and biomass-fired furnaces require surface treatments that can withstand aggressive chemical, thermal, and corrosive environments. This study investigates the corrosion and thermal resistance of plasma-sprayed Al2O3-TiO2 coatings produced using a DC air–hydrogen plasma spray process. Coatings of compositions of Al2O3, Al2O3-3 wt.% TiO2, Al2O3-13 wt.% TiO2, and Al2O3-40 wt.% TiO2 were deposited on steel substrates with a Ni/Cr bond layer by plasma spraying. The coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to evaluate their morphology, elemental composition, and crystalline phases. Electrochemical tests were performed in a naturally aerated 0.5 mol/L NaCl solution and cyclic thermal–chemical exposure tests (500 °C using 35% KCl) to assess their corrosion kinetics and thermal stability. The results indicate that pure Al2O3 and low TiO2 (3 wt.%) coatings exhibit fine barrier properties, while coatings with a higher TiO2 content develop additional phases (e.g., Ti3O5, Al2TiO5) that improve thermal resistance but reduce chemical durability. This study successfully demonstrates the synthesis of foxtail millet carbon-activated (FMCA) materials using a two-step carbonization process from foxtail millet husk (FMH). The pre-carbonized biomass-derived millet husk was chemically activated with KOH at 500 °C and subsequently carbonized in an inert argon atmosphere at 800 °C in a tubular furnace. XRD analysis revealed a diffraction peak at 2θ = 23.67°, corresponding to the (002) plane, indicating the presence of graphitic structures. The Raman analysis of FMCA materials showed an intensity ratio (IG/ID) of 1.13, signifying enhanced graphitic ordering and structural stability. The as-prepared FMC and FMCA electrode materials demonstrate efficient charge storage electrochemical symmetric devices. Electrochemical analysis revealed the charge–discharge curves and a specific capacitance of Csp (FMC//FMC) 55.47 F/g and (FMCA//FMCA) 82.94 F/g at 0.5 A/g. Additionally, the FMCA//FMCA symmetric device exhibits superior performance with a higher capacity retention of 94.89% over 5000 cycles. The results confirm the suitability of FMCA for energy storage applications, particularly in electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), making it a promising material for next-generation supercapacitors. Natural and liquefied petroleum gases are widely used in industrial heat treatment. However, the rising cost of gas, combined with increased demand, has significantly impacted production costs and the environment. The annealing process typically relies on natural or liquefied petroleum gases as the primary heat source. In this study, we aimed to investigate the use of biomass fuel as a replacement for fossil fuels and to evaluate the mechanical properties and microstructure of wire rod steel after annealing using indirect heat from a gasifier. We experimented to examine the effects of annealing temperatures of 650 °C, 700 °C (below the critical temperature Ac1), and 750 °C (above Ac1 but below the upper temperature Ac3). The batch furnace, made of stainless steel, was modified from a traditional wire annealing furnace that originally used CNG and LPG gas burners. It was adapted into a wire annealing furnace connected to a cross-draft gasifier. The furnace’s interior was designed with spiral cooling fins to minimize energy consumption and shorten annealing time. Additionally, it was modified to use biomass as a substitute fuel, reducing environmental pollution. The furnace was coated with thermal insulation, and the biomass gasifier stove was a cross-draft device with primary air feeding at 20 m3/h and secondary air supplied at a constant flow rate of 32 m3/h, 36 m3/h, or 40 m3/h. As a fuel source, we used eucalyptus. The mechanical properties of wire rod steel were measured in terms of tensile strength and torsion, following the TIS 138-2562 standard. This standard specifies that the tensile strength must be at least 260 MPa. Regarding torsion, the TIS 138-2562 requirements state that the wire must withstand at least 75 rounds of twisting without breaking. Our results showed that after annealing at 650 °C, 700 °C, or 750 °C, with a soaking time of 30 min and subsequent cooling in the furnace at natural temperature for 24 h, the tensile strength values were 494.82, 430.87, and 381.33 MPa, respectively. The torsion values were 126.92, 125.8, and 125.76 rounds, respectively. Additionally, ferrite grain size increased with annealing temperature, reaching a maximum of 750 °C. The total annealing duration for each batch was 2 h and 40 min at 650 °C, 2 h and 10 min at 700 °C, and 2 h at 750 °C. Full article

This study focused on evaluating the combustion ignition, burnout, stability, and intensity of Hwange coal and Pinus sawdust blends within a drop tube furnace (DTF) through modelling. The cocombustion of coal with biomass is gaining attention as a strategy to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Hwange coal, a key energy source in Zimbabwe, produces significant emissions, while Pinus sawdust offers a renewable alternative with favourable combustion properties. Optimising cocombustion performance is highly dependent on understanding various mass- and energy-conservation-related parameters in detail, hence the motivation of this study. The fuels of interest were blended through increasing the Pinus sawdust mass percentages up to 30%. A DTF that is 2 m long and 0.07 m in diameter was modelled and validated successfully using particle residence time and temperature profiles. An increase in blending resulted in an increase in combustion intensity, as made apparent by the heat of reaction profiles, which were also shown to be dependent on the kinetic rate of the reaction between CO and O2 to form CO2. The burnout rate profiles demonstrated that as blending increased, heat was released more abruptly over a short distance; hence, combustion became less stable. The burnout rate profiles were shown to be dependent on the kinetic rate of reaction between char and O2 to form CO. The effect of DTF wall temperatures (1273, 1473, and 1673 K) was also studied, with the results showing that at a low temperature, the reaction zone was delayed to a distance of 0.8 m from the injection point, as compared to 0.4 m at 1673 K. In summary, this study demonstrated that combustion ignition, burnout, and intensity increased with the blending ratio of Pinus sawdust, whilst combustion stability decreased. Full article

An experimental study was carried out on the ignition and combustion processes of particles (100–200 µm in size) of coals of different degrees of metamorphism and biomass, as well as mixtures based on them, under conditions of conductive and convective heating, which correspond to the conditions of fuel ignition in boiler furnaces at grates and flaring combustion. The biomass contents in the composition of the coal-based fuel mixtures were 10, 20, and 30 wt.%. Under the conductive (at 700–1000 °C) and convective (at 500–800 °C) heating of fuel particles, ignition delay times were determined using a hardware–software complex for the high-speed video registration of fast processes. The ignition delay times were found to vary from 1 to 12.2 s for conductive heating and from 0.01 to 0.19 s for convective heating. The addition of 10–30 wt.% biomass to coals reduced the ignition delay times of fuel mixtures by up to 70%. An analysis of the flue gas composition during the combustion of solid fuels allowed us to establish the concentrations of the main anthropogenic emissions. The use of biomass as an additive (from 10 to 230 wt.%) to coal reduced NOx and SOx emissions by 19–42% and 24–39%, respectively. The propensity of fuels to cause slagging depending on their component composition was established. The use of up to 30 wt.% of biomass in the mixture composition did not affect the increase in the tendency to cause slagging on heating surfaces in the boiler furnace and did not pose a threat to the layer agglomeration during the layer combustion of the mixtures. Iron-based oxygen carriers (OCs) have received much attention due to their low costs, high mechanical strengths and high-temperature stabilities in the chemical looping gasification (CLG) of biomass, but their chemical reactivity is very ordinary. Converter steel slags (CSSs) are steelmaking wastes and rich in Fe2O3, CaO and MgO, which have good oxidative ability and good stability as well as catalytic effects on biomass gasification. Therefore, the composite OCs prepared by mechanically mixing CSSs with iron-based OCs are expected to be used to increase the hydrogen production in the CLG of biomass. In this study, the catalytic performance of CSS/Fe2O3 composite OCs prepared by mechanically mixing CSSs with iron-based OCs on the gasification of brewers’ spent grains (BSGs) were investigated in a tubular furnace experimental apparatus. The results showed that when the weight ratio of the CSSs in composite OCs was 0.5, the relative volume fraction of hydrogen reached the maximum value of 49.1%, the product gas yield was 0.85 Nm3/kg and the gasification efficiency was 64.05%. It could be found by X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscope characterizations that the addition of CSSs helped to form MgFe2O4, which are efficient catalysts for H2 production. Owing to the large and widely distributed surface pores of CSSs, mixing them with iron-based OCs was beneficial for catalytic steam reforming to produce hydrogen. Full article
