Sorghum is an important C4 crop with various food and nonfood uses. Although improvements through hybridization and selection have been exploited, the introduction of genetic variation and the development of new genotypes in sorghum are still limited. Fast-neutron (FN) mutagenesis is a very effective method for gene functional studies and to create genetic variability. However, the full spectrum of FN-induced mutations in sorghum is poorly understood. To address this, we generated an FN-induced mutant population from the inbred line ‘BTx623’ and sequenced 40 M1 seedlings to evaluate the mutagenic effects of FNs on sorghum. The results show that each line had an average of 43.7 single-base substitutions (SBSs), 3.7 InDels and 35.15 structural variations (SVs). SBSs accounted for approximately 90.0% of the total number of small mutations. Among the eight treatment groups, FN irradiation at a dose of 19 Gy generated the highest number of mutations. The ratio of transition/transversion ranged from 1.77 to 2.21, and the G/C to A/T transition was the most common substitution in all mutant lines. The distributions of the identified SBSs and InDels were similar and uneven across the genome. An average of 3.63 genes were mutated in each mutant line, indicating that FN irradiation resulted in a suitable density of mutated genes, which can be advantageous for improving elite material for one specific or a few traits. These results provide a basis for the selection of the suitable dose of mutagen and new genetic resources for sorghum breeding. Full article

Traditionally, single-color laser beams are used for material processing and modifications of optical, mechanical, conductive, and thermal properties of different materials. So far, there are a limited number of studies about the dual-wavelength laser irradiation of materials, which, however, indicate a strong enhancement in laser energy coupling to solid targets. Here, a theoretical study is reported that aimed at exploring the volumetric excitation of fused silica with dual-wavelength (800 nm and 400 nm) ultrashort laser pulses focused on the material’s bulk. Numerical simulations are based on Maxwell’s equations, accounting for the generation of conduction electrons, their hydrodynamic motion in the laser field, and trapping into an excitonic state. It is shown that, by properly choosing the energies of the two laser harmonics successively coupling with the material, it is possible to strongly enhance the laser energy absorption as compared to the pulses of a single wavelength with the same total energy. Laser energy absorption strongly depends on the sequence of applied wavelengths, so that the shorter wavelength pre-irradiation can yield a dramatic effect on laser excitation by the following longer-wavelength pulse. The predictions of this study can open a new route for enhancing and controlling the highly localized absorption of laser energy inside transparent materials for optoelectronic and photonic applications. Notably, the methyl-3-heptylimidazolium ionic liquid displayed pronounced deacidification capabilities, elevating the paper pH close to a neutral 7. The treated paper exhibited significant color enhancements, particularly with 1-heptyl-3-methylimidazolium and 1-pentyl-3-methylimidazolium ILs, as evidenced by CIE-Lab* parameters. An exploration of ILs as potential UV stabilizers for paper unveiled promising outcomes, with 1-heptyl-3-methylimidazolium IL demonstrating minimal yellowing post-UV irradiation. FTIR spectra elucidated structural alterations, underscoring the efficacy of ILs in removing small-molecular additives and macromolecules. The study also addressed the preservation of inked artifacts during cleaning, showcasing ILs’ ability to solubilize iron gall ink, particularly the one with the 1-ethyl-3-propylimidazolium cation. While exercising caution for prolonged use on inked supports is still recommended, ILs are shown here to be valuable for cleaning ink-stained surfaces, establishing their effectiveness in paper restoration and cultural heritage preservation. Environmental remediation in the presence of robust semiconductor photocatalysts by utilizing renewable energy sources is of keen interest among researchers. In this study, we synthesize a BiVO4/P-g-C3N4 semiconductor heterojunction photocatalytic system through a hydrothermal route followed by utilizing a total-solvent evaporation method. The optical and electronic properties of the as-prepared heterojunction are characterized via various spectroscopic techniques. Rhodamine B (RhB) and Congo Red (CR) are used as synthetic colorants to evaluate the photocatalytic performances of BiVO4/P-g-C3N4. In addition, the chemical environment of the photocatalyst and its mechanistic pathways are confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical Mott–Schottky analysis. The BiVO4/P-g-C3N4 photocatalyst shows higher photodegradation (96.94%) of the mixed synthetic dyes under simulated solar-light irradiation. The as-synthesized BiVO4/P-g-C3N4 heterojunction significantly promotes the quick separation of photoexcited carriers due to the excellent synergetic properties, the extended light absorption, and the photoelectrochemical response. Furthermore, a possible type-II charge transfer mechanism is adopted for the BiVO4/P-g-C3N4 system after investigating the band potentials, active species, and charge carrier migration over the heterojunction interface. Stimuli-responsive color-changing and shape-changing hydrogels are promising intelligent materials for visual detections and bio-inspired actuations, respectively. However, it is still an early stage to integrate the color-changing performance and shape-changing performance together to provide bi-functional synergistic biomimetic devices, which are difficult to design but will greatly expand further applications of intelligent hydrogels. Herein, we present an anisotropic bi-layer hydrogel by combining a pH-responsive rhodamine-B (RhB)-functionalized fluorescent hydrogel layer and a photothermal-responsive shape-changing melanin-added poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel layer with fluorescent color-changing and shape-changing bi-functional synergy. This bi-layer hydrogel can obtain fast and complex actuations under irradiation with 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) light due to both the melanin-composited PNIPAM hydrogel with high efficiency of photothermal conversion and the anisotropic structure of this bi-hydrogel. Furthermore, the RhB-functionalized fluorescent hydrogel layer can provide rapid pH-responsive fluorescent color change, which can be integrated with NIR-responsive shape change to achieve bi-functional synergy. As a result, this bi-layer hydrogel can be designed using various biomimetic devices, which can show the actuating process in the dark for real-time tracking and even mimetic starfish to synchronously change both the color and shape. This work provides a new bi-layer hydrogel biomimetic actuator with color-changing and shape-changing bi-functional synergy, which will inspire new strategies for other intelligent composite materials and high-level biomimetic devices. Abstract
The goal of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of experimental resin dental composites containing a conventional photoinitiating system (camphorquinone CQ and 2-(dimethylami-no)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA)) to a photoinitiator system containing 1-phenyl-1,2 propanedione (PPD) with 2-(dimethylami-no)ethyl methacrylate) or acting alone phenylbis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)-phosphine oxide [...] Read more.
The goal of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of experimental resin dental composites containing a conventional photoinitiating system (camphorquinone CQ and 2-(dimethylami-no)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA)) to a photoinitiator system containing 1-phenyl-1,2 propanedione (PPD) with 2-(dimethylami-no)ethyl methacrylate) or acting alone phenylbis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)-phosphine oxide (BAPO). The manually produced composites consisted of an organic matrix: bis-GMA (60 wt. %), TEGDMA (40 wt. %), and silanized silica filler (45 wt. %). The composites contained 0.4/0.8 wt. %, 0.8/1.6 wt. %, and 1/2 wt. % of PPD/DMAEMA and another group included 0.25, 0.5, or 1 wt. % of BAPO. Vickers hardness, microhardness (in the nanoindentation test), diametral tensile strength, and flexural strength were assessed, and CIE L* a* b* colorimetric analysis was conducted for each composite produced. The highest average Vickers hardness values were obtained for the composite containing 1 wt. % BAPO (43.73 ± 3.52 HV). There was no statistical difference in the results of diametral tensile strength for the experimental composites tested. The results of 3-point bending tests were the highest for composites containing CQ (77.3 ± 8.84 MPa). Despite the higher hardness of experimental composites including PPD or BAPO, compared with composites with CQ, the overall results indicate that the composite with CQ still represents a better solution when used as a photoinitiator system. Moreover, the composites containing PPD and DMAEMA are not promising in terms of color or mechanical properties, especially as they require significantly longer irradiation times. Full article

In this paper, we studied the photophysical behavior of 2,6-bis(4-hydroxybenzylidene) cyclohexanone (BZCH) under the influence of various stimuli. The photophysical properties were correlated with different solvent parameters, such as the Kamlet–Abraham–Taft (KAT), Catalán, and Laurence solvent scales, suggesting that the behavior of BZCH is influenced by both nonspecific and specific solvent-solute interactions. The Catalán solvent dipolarity/polarizability parameters were found to have a significant role in the solvatochromic behavior, which is also confirmed by the KAT and Laurence models. The acidochromism and photochromism properties of this sample in dimethylsulfoxide and chloroform solutions were also investigated. The compound showed reversible acidochromism after the addition of dilute NaOH/HCl solutions, accompanied by a change in color and the appearance of a new absorption band (514 nm). The photochemical behavior was also examined by irradiating BZCH solutions with both 254 and 365 nm light. Full article

Plants can be grouped into sun- and shade-type owing to their distinct irradiance adaptation. Aglaonema commutatum is a typical shade-tolerant perennial foliage plant native to South Asia with various leaf colorations. ‘Red’ cultivars are widely used for interior decorations and as courtyard ornamental plants, owing to their unique hue and bi-adaptation of both low and high irradiance. However, the underlying source of ‘red’ pigment-dependent irradiance bi-adaptation remains largely unknown. Therefore, four A. commutatum cultivars were comparatively evaluated in terms of pigment composition and photosynthetic rate under full light (sunlight) or 50% full light (shade) to unveil the relationship between pigmentation and irradiance bi-adaptation. Our results showed that the photosynthetic rate of sun leaves generated from light response curves was significantly correlated with anthocyanin content and chlorophyll in red cultivars, suggesting the influence of anthocyanin–light interactions on the high/low irradiance bi-adaptation of red A. commutatum. This study provides a theoretical basis for further cultivating red foliage A. commutatum cultivars under diverse light conditions. Full article

Preparing mixed crystals composed of two or more components is one of the useful approaches to not only modifying the physical properties and chemical reactivity of molecular crystals but also creating their novel functionality. Here we report preparation and photoresponsive properties of two-component mixed crystals containing photochromic bis(benzothienyl)ethene derivatives that show different colors in the closed-ring forms depending on the oxidation state of the benzothiophene groups. The similarity in the molecular structures of the two diarylethenes, which are different from each other only in the oxidation state of the benzothiophene groups, allowed the formation of two-component mixed crystals by recrystallization from mixed solutions containing the two compounds. Irradiating the mixed crystals with light of appropriate wavelengths induced the selective photoisomerizaion of the two diarylethenes, leading to multicolor photochromic performance, such as colorless, orange, yellow, and red. Such molecular crystals with multiresponsive functions can find potential applications in multistate optical recording and multicolor displays. The present results demonstrate that combining differently oxidized diarylethene derivatives is an effective strategy for preparing multicomponent mixed crystals with finely tuned composition and desired photoresponsive properties. Mineral trioxide aggregates (MTA) have been widely used in endodontic treatments, but after some time, patients suffer tooth discoloration due to the use of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) as a radiopacifier. Replacement of Bi2O3 with high energy ball-milled single (zirconia ZrO2; hafnia, HfO2; or tantalum pentoxide, Ta2O5) or binary oxide powder was attempted, and corresponding discoloration improvement was investigated in the present study. Bi2O3-free MTA is expected to exhibit superior discoloration. The radiopacity, diametral tensile strength, and discoloration of MTA-like cements prepared from the as-milled powder were investigated. Experimental results showed that MTA-like cements prepared using Ta2O5 exhibited a slightly higher radiopacity than that of HfO2 but had a much higher radiopacity than ZrO2. Milling treatment (30 min to 3 h) did not affect the radiopacities significantly. These MTA-like cements exhibited superior color stability (all measured ΔE00 < 1.0) without any perceptible differences after UV irradiation. MTA-like cements prepared using ZrO2 exhibited the best color stability but the lowest radiopacity, which can be improved by introducing binary oxide. Among the investigated samples, MTA-like cement using (ZrO2)50(Ta2O5)50 exhibited excellent color stability and the best overall performance with a radiopacity of 3.25 mmAl and a diametral tensile strength of 4.39 MPa. Minimizing agricultural losses, accompanied by employing technologies capable of taking advantage of solar energy, are the current challenges of the Antofagasta region of Chile due to having an average solar irradiance of 7.2 kWh/m2 per day. With this objective, using an indirect solar dryer with storage of thermal energy in the form of sensible heat, the effect of drying on the quality of carrot strips was studied using chromatic coordinates CIEL*a*b*, the color difference (ΔE), the relationship between redness/yellowness (R = a*/b*), browning index (BI), whiteness index (WI), chroma (C), hue angle (h°) and drying kinetics. The experimental drying data were fitted to 15 typically employed nonlinear regression models. The ΔE = 14.11 ± 0.14 between the carrots in the dry and fresh conditions represented a detectable color change, the R ratio increased from 0.75 to 0.89, the BI index decreased from 209.82 ± 0.62 to 148.38 ± 0.26 and the WI index increased from 24.5 ± 0.11 to 31.8 ± 0.17, indicating color affectations due to the process. The coefficients of determination, (R2) close to 1 and the values closest to 0 of χ2, SSE and RMSE, led to the best fit corresponding to the Weibull distribution model. In addition, it was found that the operation of the drying installation in the hours without incident solar radiation maintained the drying temperature values throughout the process. Full article

This study investigated the chemical changes of phytochemicals and antioxidant activity during the preparation of traditional Sudanese asida prepared from gamma-radiated (1.0 and 2.0 kGy) flour of two sorghum cultivars (Tabat and Wad Ahmed). For both cultivars, the irradiation process significantly (p < 0.05) increased the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of the raw flour, while it caused a significant reduction in total flavonoid content and tannin content. Traditional asida (fermented food) prepared from irradiated sorghum flour caused a significant reduction in TPC, TFC, and tannin content in both sorghum cultivars, while the antioxidant activities (DPPH, reducing power, and H2O2 scavenging) were significantly increased in both the Tabat (85.0%, 3.8 mg AAE/g, and 84.6%, respectively) and the Wad Ahmed (89.6%, 3.9 mg AAE/g, and 83.1%, respectively) sorghum cultivar grains, particularly in those processed from 2.0 kGy-irradiated flour. A positive high correlation was observed between gamma radiation (2.0 kGy) and the antioxidant activity of asida prepared from both cultivars. In conclusion, traditional fermented asida obtained from irradiated flour showed high antioxidant activity in both sorghum cultivars. Full article

Photochromic materials are interesting materials because of their color-changing property under UV light and visible light irradiation. However, they are vulnerable to many factors, such as pH oxygen, ion, solvent, etc. because of the unsaturated bonds existing on the photochromic molecular. Microencapsulation of the photochromic materials can separate them from the surroundings. Here, photochromic microcapsules using 3,3-Diphenyl-3H-naphtho[2,1-b] pyran (NP)/solution as core and polyurea as shell via interfacial polymerization were prepared, and bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl)sebacate (HALS 770) was used as photostabilizer. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), a laser particle size analyzer, a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a thermogravimetric analyzer and an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer were used for characterization. The results showed that the microcapsules had a uniform particle size of about 0.56 μm when the percentage of the oil phase (core) in the emulsion was less than 15%, the addition amount of the emulsifier was 0.4%, and the stirring rate was 1800 r/min. The microcapsules showed better performance in thermal stability when the core/shell ratio was 1:1. The photostabilizer had little impact on the color-changing property of the microcapsule, but it could protect the microcapsules from UV light radiation aging. Full article

A BiF3 powder sample was prepared from the purchased Bi2O3 powder via the precipitation route. The photocatalytic performance of the prepared BiF3 powder was compared with the Bi2O3 powder and recognized as superior. The prepared BiF3 powder sample was added in a plaster of Paris (POP) matrix in the proportion of 0%, 1%, 5%, and 10% by wt% to form POP–BiF3(0%), POP–BiF3(1%), POP–BiF3(5%), and POP–BiF3(10%) composite pellets, respectively, and activated the photocatalytic property under the UV–light irradiation,in the POP. In this work, Resazurin (Rz) ink was utilized as an indicator to examine the photocatalytic activity and self-cleaning performance of POP–BiF3(0%), POP–BiF3(1%), POP–BiF3(5%), and POP–BiF3(10%) composite pellets. In addition to the digital photographic method, the UV–visible absorption technique was adopted to quantify the rate of the de-colorization of the Rz ink, which is a direct measure of comparative photocatalytic performance of samples. In the present work, visible light active bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) was immobilized on a commercial, non-conductive support (an Al2O3 based ceramic paper) using a novel two-step spray coating technique and investigated with different characterization methods (e.g., SEM, Raman, XPS). Our main goal was to eliminate the separation costs after the photocatalytic measurement and investigate the chemical relevance and opportunity to use this technique in the industry. Our as-prepared uniform BiOI layer had similar properties to the well-known reference BiOI powder. The Raman and XPS measurements confirmed that the enriched amount of the surface iodine defined the color and as well the band gap of the BiOI layer. The durable BiOI layers have prominent photocatalytic activity under UV and visible light irradiation as well. The scale-up procedure proved that the designed BiOI coated paper was reusable and potentially applicable in the industry by straightforward scale-up, which is due to the elaborated non-conventional BiOI coverage estimation method. This immobilization technique could open several opportunities for immobilizing many other visible light active photocatalysts with simple materials and low cost. Full article
