Recently, the demand for electric motors that can achieve high performance while ensuring stable magnet supply has continued to increase across various industrial sectors. Although rare-earth permanent magnets, such as neodymium and samarium cobalt, enable superior electromagnetic performance, their high cost and supply instability have motivated growing interest in motors employing non-rare-earth permanent magnets, such as ferrite magnets. Due to the relatively low remanent flux density and coercivity of non-rare-earth magnets, spoke-type rotor structures are commonly adopted to enhance flux concentration. However, spoke-type configurations inherently suffer from axial leakage flux, in which a portion of the magnetic flux generated by the permanent magnets fails to link with the stator and instead leaks along the axial direction. This axial leakage flux reduces the effective air-gap flux density, leading to a degradation of back electromotive force (back-EMF) and overall motor performance. In this study, a double-spoke-type motor employing asymmetric permanent magnet geometry is investigated. Finite element analysis (FEA) is performed to identify an effective rotor structure that reduces axial leakage flux without increasing magnet usage, demonstrating the feasibility of performance improvement in non-rare-earth permanent magnet motors. The consequent-pole interior permanent-magnet (CPM) motor is a promising alternative for minimizing rare-earth magnet usage while supporting high-speed operation. However, rotor flux asymmetry often leads to distorted back-electromotive force waveforms and increased torque ripple. This study investigated a flared-type CPM motor that employs ferrite magnets arranged in a flared configuration to enhance flux concentration within a compact rotor. To address waveform distortion, structural modifications such as bridge removal and an asymmetric air-gap design were implemented. Three rotor parameters—polar angle, asymmetric air-gap length, and rotor opening length—were optimized using Latin hypercube sampling combined with an evolutionary algorithm. Finite element method analyses conducted under no-load and rated-load conditions showed that the optimized model achieved a 77.8% reduction in torque ripple, a 43.4% decrease in cogging torque, and a 0.5% improvement in efficiency compared with the basic model. Stress analyses were performed to examine the structural bonding strength and rotor deformation of the optimized model under high-speed operation. The results revealed a 5.5× safety margin at four times the rated speed. The proposed approach offers a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to rare-earth magnet machines for high-efficiency household appliances, where vibration reduction, cost stability, and energy efficiency are critical. In consequent-pole permanent magnet (CPPM) machines, the configuration where PM poles and iron poles are alternately arranged causes distortion in the air-gap magnetic field. This results in significant differences in magnetic circuit characteristics compared to conventional PM machines. To address the requirements of reducing torque ripple and enhancing average output torque, the cogging torque and optimization methods for CPPM machines were investigated. A general analytical model for cogging torque was established. This model accounts for asymmetric pole configurations and is particularly well-suited for analyzing CPPM machines. The mechanism through which the consequent-pole (CP) structure improves the utilization rate of PM material was explored, and the parameters influencing the main flux were analyzed. By replacing PMs with soft magnetic materials, the conventional topology of a 12-slot/8-pole surface-inserted PM machine with stator skewing was directly converted into a CP topology. Performance optimization was conducted based on this original scheme. This approach ensures manufacturing convenience while maximizing the sharing of identical components. Simulation results demonstrate that, compared to the benchmark machine, the optimized CPPM machine uses only 60.16% of the PM material while producing 88.19% of the electromagnetic torque, resulting in a 46.61% increase in torque generated per unit volume of PM material. Finally, the benchmark and optimized CPPM prototypes were fabricated, and their torque output capabilities were tested. The finite element simulation results and the measured data show good consistency, validating the correctness of the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the finite element model. This study provides a theoretical basis and engineering reference for the performance analysis and optimal design of CPPM machines. Full article

As critical strategic mineral resources underpinning high-tech industries and national defense security, rare earth elements have become a central focus of international competition, with their global industrial chain configuration deeply intertwined with geopolitical dynamics. Leveraging a novel multilateral database encompassing 140 countries’ geopolitical relationships and rare earth trade flows (2001–2023), this study employs social network analysis and temporal exponential random graph models (TERGMs) to decode structural interdependencies across upstream mineral concentrates, midstream smelting, and downstream permanent magnet sectors. Empirical results show that topological density trajectories reveal intensified network coupling, with upstream/downstream sectors demonstrating strong clustering. Geopolitical cooperation and conflict exert differential impacts along the value chain: downstream trade exhibits heightened sensitivity to cooperative effects, whereas midstream trade suffers the most pronounced obstruction from conflicts. Cooperation fosters long-term trade relationships, whereas conflicts primarily impose short-term suppression. In addition, centrality metrics reveal asymmetric mechanisms. Each unit increase in cooperation degree centrality amplifies the mid/downstream trade by 3.29 times, whereas conflict centrality depresses the midstream trade by 4.76%. The eigenvector centrality of cooperation hub nations enhances the midstream trade probability by 5.37-fold per unit gain, in contrast with the 25.09% midstream trade erosion from conflict-prone nations’ centrality increments. These insights provide implications for mitigating geopolitical risks and achieving sustainable governance in key mineral resource supply chains. Full article

This paper presents a comparative analysis of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives powered by symmetrical and asymmetrical cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters. The asymmetric topology operates using multiple DC sources with different voltage values, generating a voltage waveform with more output voltage levels than its traditional counterpart, all while maintaining the same hardware configuration. The main goal is to demonstrate that asymmetrical multilevel inverters are a promising option for improving the performance of electric drives while maintaining cost-efficiency and reliability. The proposed comparison is conducted through simulations in the MATLAB/Simulink R2024a environment, which allows an in-depth analysis of the dynamic performance of the electric drive. Additionally, the variation of the DC link input power of each H-bridge and the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the voltage and current of the output of the converters were studied for different operating conditions in both cases. The obtained results were confirmed through real-time validation, demonstrating the applicability of electric drives powered by asymmetric converters and the advantages, in terms of efficiency, harmonic content and dynamic performance, in certain conditions of operation in terms of speed and applied load. Interior permanent magnet motors are widely used in applications requiring high power density and high efficiency due to their high torque-generating capabilities. Recently, given the price fluctuations and unstable supply of rare earth permanent magnets, alternative configurations with reduced use of permanent magnets are being sought. Among the various candidates related to this, the consequent-pole type rotor structure can halve the number of permanent magnets used compared with conventional structures. However, in a no-load analysis, the waveform of the back electromotive force becomes asymmetric, generating a harmonic component. As a result, there is a disadvantage that the torque ripple increases. To overcome these shortcomings, we propose a novel rotor structure that applies a consequent-pole structure to an embedded permanent-magnet motor structure, wherein a number of permanent magnets are arranged in a flared structure to constitute a single polarity. In the proposed flared-structured magnet arrangement, it is possible to adjust the angle of the permanent magnet and the polar angle to mitigate the asymmetry of the back-EMF waveform. The proposed structure was optimized with a genetic algorithm and a prototype of the optimal model was constructed and experimentally evaluated to verify its validity. Finally, the performance improvement and validity of the proposed structure were verified by comparing the analysis results of the optimal model with the experimental results. Full article

A novel asymmetric spoke-type interior permanent magnet (AS-IPM) machine is proposed in this paper. It utilizes the magnetic-field-shifting (MFS) effect to improve the torque performance, which achieves a high utilization ratio of both permanent magnet (PM) torque and reluctance torque. In addition, a general pattern of rotor topologies is proposed to represent all possible machine structures. Various rotor structures can be obtained by changing the design parameters of the general pattern. A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) is adopted to automatically search for optimal rotor configurations. With the aid of the optimization program, an asymmetric spoke-type rotor structure with improved performance is obtained. To showcase the advantages of the proposed machine, the electromagnetic performance is compared between a conventional spoke-type interior permanent magnet (S-IPM) machine and a proposed AS-IPM machine. The finite-element simulation results show that the optimal design of the AS-IPM performs a 7.7% higher output torque ripple due to the MFS effect while the total PM volume remains the same. Meanwhile, the torque ripple of the proposed structure is significantly reduced by 82.1%. Full article

Line-start synchronous motors have attracted researchers’ interest as suitable replacements of asynchronous motors due to their high efficiency, which has been provoked by strict regulations regarding applicable efficiency classes of motors in the EU market. The research becomes even more challenging as it takes into consideration the diverse rotor topologies with different magnet locations for this type of motor. The rotor configuration with an interior asymmetric permanent magnet (PM) array rotor was chosen for analysis and optimization in this paper as this specific configuration is particularly challenging in terms of placing the magnets with adequate dimensions into the existing rotor of the asynchronous motor with a squirrel cage winding, in order simultaneously to obtain good operational characteristics such as high efficiency and power factor, good overloading capability and low material consumption. Therefore, an optometric analysis is performed in order to find the best configuration of the air gap length, magnet thickness, magnet width and number of conductors per slot, along with modifications of the rotor slot. The motor outer dimensions remained unchanged compared with the starting model of the line-start motor derived from the asynchronous motor, which is a product of the company Končar. The optimized model obtained higher efficiency, power factor and overloading capability than the starting model, along with good starting and synchronization capabilities. Full article

This paper investigated an electromagnetic torque ripple level of BLDC drives with multiple three-phase (TP) permanent magnet (PM) motors for electric vehicles. For this purpose, mathematical models of PM machines of different armature winding sets-single (STP), dual (DTP), triple (TTP), and quadruple (QTP) ones of asymmetrical configuration and optimal angular displacement between winding sets were developed and corresponding computer models in the Matlab/Simulink environment were created. In conducted simulation, the influence of various factors on the electromagnetic torque ripple of the multiple-TP BLDC drives was investigated—degree of modularity, magnetic coupling between armature winding sets, and drive operation in open and closed-loop control systems. Studies have shown an increase of the electromagnetic torque ripple generated by one module in the multiple TP BLDC drives with magnetically coupled winding sets, due to additional current pulsations caused by magnetic interactions between the machine modules. However, the total electromagnetic torque ripples are much lower than in similar drives with magnetically insulated winding sets. Compared with the STP BLDC drive, the multiple TP BLDC drives with the same output parameters showed a reduction of the electromagnetic torque ripple by 27.6% for the DTP, 32.3% for the TTP, and 34.0% for the QTP BLDC drive. Permanent magnet machines (PMs) equipped with fractional slot concentrated windings (FSCWs) have been preferably proposed for electric vehicle (EV) applications. Moreover, integrated on-board battery chargers (OBCs), which employ the powertrain elements in the charging process, promote the zero-emission future envisaged for transportation through the transition to EVs. Based on the available literature, the employed machine, as well as the adopted winding configuration, highly affects the performance of the integrated OBC. However, the optimal design of the FSCW-based PM machine in the charging mode of operation has not been conceived thus far. In this paper, the design and multi-objective optimization of an asymmetrical 12-slot/10-pole integrated OBC based on the efficient magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) approach are presented, shedding light on machine performance during charging mode. An ‘initial’ surface-mounted PM (SPM) machine is first designed based on the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model. Afterwards, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is utilized to define the optimal machine parameters. Finally, the optimal machine is compared to the ‘initial’ design using finite element (FE) simulations in order to validate the proposed optimization approach and to highlight the performance superiority of the optimal machine over its initial counterpart. This paper proposes a novel interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine with asymmetrical PM configuration. Different from the traditional IPM counterparts, the proposed machine can perform a magnet axis shifted (MAS) effect. The magnet axis is shifted towards the reluctance axis so that a higher resultant torque capability can be obtained. Firstly, the configuration and the basic principle of the proposed machine are described. The design parameters are optimized to improve the torque capability, and the effect of the PM asymmetry ratio on the torque performance is then evaluated in detail. In addition, the major electromagnetic characteristics of the optimized machine are investigated and compared with those of the Prius 2010 IPM machine by finite element method (FEM). The results demonstrate that the proposed asymmetrical PM configuration can achieve the torque improvement due to the MAS effect. Full article

The proposed modular three-phase PMSM has an independent segregated three-phase winding configuration, facilitating the implementation of the control algorithm. Firstly, on the basis of the electromagnetic properties, the mathematical model of the modular three-phase PMSM is established, considering the asymmetrical mutual inductances investigated by finite element analysis (FEA). Then, the predictive torque control (PTC) method combining the inductance characteristics of modular three-phase PMSM is developed, and excellent performance is obtained by adjusting the stator flux and torque. This article presents the results of a comparative analysis of two electronically commutated brushless direct current machines intended for fault-tolerant drives. Two machines designed by the authors were compared: a 12/14 dual-channel brushless direct current motor (DCBLDCM) with permanent magnets and a 12/8 dual-channel switched reluctance motor (DCSRM). Information is provided here on the winding configuration, the parameters, and the power converters of both machines. We developed mathematical models of the DCBLDCM and DCSRM which accounted for the nonlinearity of their magnetization characteristics in dual-channel operation (DCO) and single-channel operation (SCO) modes. The static torque characteristics and flux characteristics of both machines were compared for operation in DCO and SCO modes. The waveforms of the current and the electromagnetic torque are presented for DCO and SCO operating conditions. For DCO mode, an analysis of the behavior of both machines under fault conditions (i.e., asymmetrical control, shorted coil, and open phase) was performed. The two designs were compared, and their strengths and weaknesses were indicated. Full article

This paper proposes the design of a three-phase axial flux permanent magnet alternator (AFPMA) that is characterized with an air-cored stator and two-rotor (ACSTR) configuration. The AFPMA is harnessed with fully controlled AC/DC converter using six bridge Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBTs) capable to deliver a constant DC output power as an attempt to replace the Lundell alternator for automotive applications. First, the design methodology and analysis of the AFPMA is introduced. The most effective parameters, such as rotor diameter, magnet thickness, number of turns, and winding thickness are determined. A smart digital control which facilitates the comparison between the magnitudes of the three-phase input signals instead of finding the zero crossing points is developed. Moreover, custom design comparators are specially designed and developed to generate adaptive signals that are fed into an Arduino Uno microcontroller. Accordingly, the Arduino generates the timely precise pulses that are necessary to maintain the appropriate triggering of the IGBTs. This technique allows the IGBTs to conduct in an adaptive manner to overcome the problem of asymmetrical voltage outputs from the AFPM alternator. The system is also capable of handling the variation in the speed of the AFPMA via the rigor code in Arduino that detects the change in the supply frequency and voltages in a real time process. The system is first analyzed via simulations using MATLAB/Simulink and then experimentally validated at certain speed and loading conditions. The preliminary tests results indicate that such system is capable to provide an efficient solution to satisfy automotive electric power demands. Full article
