This study examines how the newly established United States pursued economic development through diplomatic and commercial initiatives with the Ottoman Empire, navigating regional powers and the era’s political-economic conditions. It analyzes using American archival sources how America endeavored to establish commercial and diplomatic relations with the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, which it viewed as critical markets in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before signing any formal agreement. The research tracks how these early efforts laid foundations for what would become one of the world’s largest economies. The study analyzes America’s diplomatic efforts to secure an agreement with the Ottoman Empire prior to the 7 May 1830 trade agreement—which laid the foundation for bilateral relations—alongside the reactions of regional powers, the prevailing conditions of the period, and the Ottoman administration’s reluctance due to various factors, based on U.S. archival sources that, to the best of our knowledge, have not previously been utilized in existing studies. This paper reports a statistical analysis of a database archiving information on the strengths of the materials in existing Italian bridges having pre- and post-tensioned concrete beams. Data were collected in anonymous form by analyzing a stock of about 170 bridges built between 1960 and 2000 and located in several Italian regions. To date, the database refers to steel reinforcing bars, concrete, and prestressing steel, whose strengths were gathered from design nominal values, acceptance certificates, and in situ test results, all derived by consulting the available documents for each examined bridge. At first, this paper describes how the available data were collected. Then, the results of a statistical analysis are presented and commented on. Moreover, goodness-of-fit tests are carried out to verify the assumption validity of a normal distribution for steel reinforcing bars and prestressing steel, and a log-normal distribution for concrete. The database represents a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners for the assessment of existing bridges. It may be applied for the use of prior knowledge within a framework where Bayesian methods are included for reducing uncertainties. The database provides essential information on the strengths of the materials to be used for a simulated design and/or for verification in the case of limited knowledge. Goodness-of-fit tests make the collected information very useful, even if probabilistic methods are applied. Full article

Museums play an essential role in preserving both cultural and natural heritage, safeguarding samples that offer invaluable insights into our history and scientific understanding. The integration of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) has significantly advanced the study, restoration, and conservation of these priceless objects. This work explores the application of micro-CT across three critical areas of museum practice: sample virtualization, restoration assessment, and the analysis of fossil specimens. Specifically, micro-CT scanning was applied to fossils stored in the G.A.M.P.S. collection (Scandicci, Italy), enabling the creation of highly detailed non-invasive 3D models for digital archiving and virtual exhibitions. At the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, micro-CT was employed to evaluate fossil bone restoration treatments, focusing on the internal impact of menthol as a consolidant and its effects on the structural integrity of the material. Furthermore, micro-CT was utilized to investigate a sealed bee preserved in its cocoon within a paleosol in Costa Vicentina (Portugal), providing unprecedented insights into its internal anatomy and state of preservation, all while maintaining the integrity of the specimen. The results of this study underscore the versatility of micro-CT as a powerful non-destructive tool for advancing the fields of conservation, restoration, and scientific analysis of cultural and natural heritage. By integrating high-resolution imaging with both virtual and hands-on conservation strategies, micro-CT empowers museums to enhance research capabilities, improve preservation methodologies, and foster greater public engagement with their collections. Early printed books, particularly incunabula, are invaluable archives of the beginnings of modern educational systems. However, their complex layouts, antique typefaces, and page degradation caused by bleed-through and ink fading pose significant challenges for automatic transcription. In this work, we present a modular pipeline that addresses these problems by combining modern layout analysis and language modeling techniques. The pipeline begins with historical layout-aware text segmentation using Kraken, a neural network-based tool tailored for early typographic structures. Initial optical character recognition (OCR) is then performed with Kraken’s recognition engine, followed by post-correction using a fine-tuned ByT5 transformer model trained on manually aligned line-level data. By learning to map noisy OCR outputs to verified transcriptions, the model substantially improves recognition quality. The pipeline also integrates a preprocessing stage based on our previous work on bleed-through removal using robust statistical filters, including non-local means, Gaussian mixtures, biweight estimation, and Gaussian blur. This step enhances the legibility of degraded pages prior to OCR. The entire solution is open, modular, and scalable, supporting long-term preservation and improved accessibility of cultural heritage materials. Experimental results on 15th-century incunabula show a reduction in the Character Error Rate (CER) from around 38% to around 15% and an increase in the Bilingual Evaluation Understudy (BLEU) score from 22 to 44, confirming the effectiveness of our approach. This work demonstrates the potential of integrating transformer-based correction with layout-aware segmentation to enhance OCR accuracy in digital humanities applications. Full article

Human exploitation has been a major driver of marine turtle population declines, particularly affecting naturally scarce species such as the pantropical hawksbill turtle. Although hawksbill sea turtles have been documented in the Gulf of California since the early 20th century, data on their historical demography during periods of high exploitation in this region are nonexistent. We investigated the size structure of hawksbill turtles from the Western Central Gulf of California by examining a unique sample of decorative taxidermies, corresponding to 31 specimens captured during fishing operations near Santa Rosalía, Baja California Sur, Mexico, between 1980 and 1990. An analysis of the curved carapace measures revealed a length range (nuchal notch to posterior of supracaudals) of 29.5–59.5 cm (mean = 38.75 ± 6.67 cm) and a width range of 25.0–51.5 cm (mean = 33.63 ± 5.66 cm), with 87% of specimens having lengths between 30 and 45 cm. Based on the carapace length measurements, we estimated the ages to be between 7 and 20 years, indicating that the population included juveniles. Our findings provide baseline data for an understudied period and region, suggesting that this area previously served as an important juvenile habitat. These results contribute essential historical demographic information for conservation planning. Full article

This study focuses on Richard Wilhelm (1873–1930), a German Protestant missionary, employing archival research methods to examine his experiences in China and his contributions to the dissemination of Christianity. After arriving in Qingdao (青島) in 1899, Wilhelm adopted a missionary approach that was relatively new to the German missionary community. Under the influence of the theory of “direct Christianity”, he focused on “cultural evangelism” in an effort to establish a non-dogmatic Chinese Christianity. By establishing modern schools and hospitals, he played a pivotal role in fostering reconciliation between Christian and non-Christian communities in China, thereby enhancing the legitimacy of Christian educational institutions within the indigenous educational framework. Furthermore, through extensive dialogues with both intellectual elites and ordinary citizens, Wilhelm demonstrated that traditional Confucian values are not inherently in conflict with Christian teachings. His missionary endeavors thus promoted the indigenization of Christianity in China and significantly facilitated Sino-German cultural exchange. Full article

This study proposes a non-semantic multimodal approach to predict segment access frequency (SAF) in lecture archives. Such archives, widely used as supplementary resources in modern education, often consist of long, unedited recordings that are difficult to navigate and review efficiently. The predicted SAF, an indicator of student viewing behavior, serves as a practical proxy for student engagement. The increasing volume of recorded material renders manual editing and annotation impractical, making the automatic identification of high-SAF segments crucial for improving accessibility and supporting targeted content review. The approach focuses on lecture archives from a real-world blended learning context, characterized by resource constraints such as no specialized hardware and limited student numbers. The model integrates multimodal features from instructor’s actions (via OpenPose and optical flow), audio spectrograms, and slide page progression—a selection of features that makes the approach applicable regardless of lecture language. The model was evaluated on 665 labeled one-minute segments from one such course. Experiments show that the best-performing model achieves a Pearson correlation of 0.5143 in 7-fold cross-validation and 61.05% average accuracy in a downstream three-class classification task. These results demonstrate the system’s capacity to enhance lecture archives by automatically identifying key segments, which aids students in efficient, targeted review and provides instructors with valuable data for pedagogical feedback. The Arctic Ocean is turning blue. Abrupt Arctic warming and amplification is driving rapid sea ice decline and irreversible deglaciation of Greenland. The already emerging, substantial consequences for the planet and society are intensifying and yet, model-based projections lack validatory consensus. To date, we cannot anticipate how a blue Arctic will respond to and amplify an increasingly warmer future climate, nor how it will impact the wider planet and society. Climate projections are inconclusive as we critically lack key Arctic geological archives that preserved the answers. This “Arctic Challenge” of global significance can only be addressed by investigating the processes, consequences, and impacts of past “greenhouse” (warmer-than-present) climate states. To address this challenge, the ERC Synergy Grant project Into the Blue (i2B) is undertaking a program of research focused on retrieving new Arctic geological archives of past warmth and key breakthroughs in climate model performance to deliver a ground-breaking, synergistic framework to answer the central question: “Why and what were the global ramifications of a “blue” (ice-free) Arctic during past warmer-than-present climates?” Here, we present the proposed research plan that will be conducted as part of this program. Into the Blue will quantify cryosphere (sea ice and land ice) change in a warmer world that will form the scientific basis for understanding the dynamics of Arctic cryosphere and ocean changes to enable the quantitative assessment of the impact of Arctic change on ocean biosphere, climate extremes, and society that will underpin future cryosphere-inclusive IPCC assessments. The Tree–Seed Algorithm (TSA) is a symmetry-driven metaheuristic algorithm that shows potential for complex optimization problems, but it suffers from local optimum entrapment and slow convergence. To address these limitations, we propose the ADTSA algorithm. First, ADTSA adopts a symmetry-driven dual-layer framework for seed generation, which promotes effective information exchange between subpopulations and accelerates convergence speed. In later iterations, ADTSA enhances the population’s exploitation ability through a population fusion mechanism, further improving the convergence speed. Moreover, we propose a historical optimal solution archiving and replacement mechanism, along with a t-distribution perturbation mechanism, to enhance the algorithm’s ability to escape local optima. ADTSA also strengthens population diversity and avoids local optima through convex lens symmetric reverse generation based on the optimal solution. With these mechanisms, ADTSA converges more effectively to the global optimum during the evolutionary process. Tests on the IEEE CEC 2014 benchmark functions showed that ADTSA outperformed several top-performing algorithms, such as LSHADE, JADE, LSHADE-RSP, and the latest TSA variants, and it also excelled in comparison with other optimization algorithms, including GWO, PSO, BOA, GA, and RSA, underscoring its robust performance across diverse testing scenarios. The proposed ADTSA’s applicability in solving complex constrained problems was also validated, with the results showing that ADTSA achieved the best solutions for these complex problems. Full article

The history of bizzoche and tertiaries in early modern Malta is still largely unexplored. Through archival material, this paper provides an initial overview of the women who opted for a semi-religious lifestyle in Malta in the period up to c.1700, examining their modes of living and status within society. It also examines their position within the structures of the Church in Malta, shaped by both societal and ecclesiastical norms and the female Christian experience, within the context of the Catholic Reformation. Background and Objectives: Meniscal pathologies are common abnormalities of the knee joint and a frequent cause of knee pain. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential to ensure appropriate treatment. Ultrasonography is increasingly used due to its accessibility, cost- and time-efficiency, and capacity for dynamic assessment. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of ultrasonography in identifying specific types of meniscal tears and to assess their frequency of occurrence. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to assess the frequency and sonographic appearance of various meniscal pathologies. The study population included all patients who underwent ultrasonographic examination of the knee in our clinic over one year for various indications (n = 430). Archived ultrasound images were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Results: Meniscal pathologies were identified in 134 patients. The findings included 95 cases of degenerative lesions (70.9%), 18 meniscal cyst-related pathologies (13.4%), 8 complex tears (6.0%), 5 flap tears (3.7%), 3 vertical pericapsular tears (2.2%), 3 partial thickness tears (2.2%), and 2 bucket-handle-type tears (1.5%). Each lesion type was characterized and illustrated through representative ultrasound images. Conclusions: Ultrasound imaging of meniscal pathology offers a valuable diagnostic option. By characterizing and visually documenting different meniscal lesions, this study highlights the practical potential of ultrasonography in routine clinical settings. These findings may enhance diagnostic accuracy and guide more targeted management strategies. Moreover, the results contribute to the expanding body of research on musculoskeletal ultrasonography and may encourage broader adoption of ultrasound in orthopedic diagnostics. Full article

The increasing integration of 3D technologies and machine learning is fundamentally reshaping mineral sciences and cultural heritage, establishing the foundation for an emerging “Mineralogy 4.0” framework. However, public engagement with digital 3D collections is often limited by complex or costly interfaces, such as VR/AR systems and traditional touchscreen kiosks, creating a clear need for more intuitive, accessible, and more engaging and inclusive solutions. This paper presents PETRA, an open-source, gesture-controlled system for exploring 3D rocks and minerals. Developed in the TouchDesigner environment, PETRA utilizes a standard webcam and the MediaPipe framework to translate natural hand movements into real-time manipulation of digital specimens, requiring no specialized hardware. The system provides a customizable, node-based framework for creating touchless, interactive exhibits. Successfully evaluated during a “Long Night of Museums” public event with 550 visitors, direct qualitative observations confirmed high user engagement, rapid instruction-free learnability across diverse age groups, and robust system stability in a continuous-use setting. As a practical case study, PETRA demonstrates that low-cost, webcam-based gesture control is a viable solution for creating accessible and immersive learning experiences. This work offers a significant contribution to the fields of digital mineralogy, human–machine interaction, and cultural heritage by providing a hygienic, scalable, and socially engaging method for interacting with geological collections. This research confirms that as digital archives grow, the development of human-centered interfaces is paramount in unlocking their full scientific and educational potential. Full article

The UNESCO heritage model, rooted in concepts of physical fixity and authenticity, is shown as inadequate for born-digital works like comics, which derive meaning from technological infrastructure, dynamic platforms, and ongoing community interaction rather than static material forms. Drawing on heritage futures and digital materiality theories, the authors argue that digital comics exemplify "temporal authenticity," evolving through continual transformation and algorithmic curation. The paper details how platform recommendation systems and analytics directly shape which comics achieve cultural visibility and preservation, while community-driven initiatives—such as The Flashpoint Archive—demonstrate effective models for holistic, grassroots digital preservation beyond institutional reach. Ultimately, the study calls for new theoretical and practical approaches to heritage, recognizing digital comics as both cultural artifacts and dynamic, platform-specific vernacular expressions. This study introduces an algorithm for quantifying oceanic wind speed and identifying sound sources in the local underwater soundscape. Utilizing low-complexity metrics like one-minute spectral kurtosis and power spectral density levels, the algorithm categorizes different soundscapes and estimates wind speed. It detects rain, vessels, fin and blue whales, as well as clicks and whistles from dolphins. Positioned as a foundational tool for implementing the Ocean Sound Essential Ocean Variable (EOV), it contributes to understanding long-term trends in climate change for sustainable ocean health and predicting threats through forecasts. The proposed soundscape classification algorithm, validated using extensive acoustic recordings (≥32 kHz) collected at various depths and latitudes, demonstrates high performance, achieving an average precision of 89% and an average recall of 86.59% through optimized parameter tuning via a genetic algorithm. Here, wind speed is determined using a cubic function with power spectral density (PSD) at 6 kHz and the MASLUW method, exhibiting strong agreement with satellite data below 15 m/s. Designed for compatibility with low-power electronics, the algorithm can be applied to both archival datasets and real-time data streams. It provides a straightforward metric for ocean monitoring and sound source identification. Full article

Hundreds of Japanese features of war (field positions, tunnels, and fortifications) were constructed in Hong Kong during World War II. However, most of them were poorly documented and were left unknown but still in relatively good condition because of their durable design, workmanship, and remoteness. These features of war form parts of Hong Kong’s brutal history. Conservation, at least in digital form, is worth considering. With the authors coming from multidisciplinary and varied backgrounds, this paper aims to explore these features using a scientific workflow. First, we reviewed the surviving archival sources of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy. Second, airborne LiDAR data were used to form territory digital terrain models (DTM) based on the Red Relief Image Map (RRIM) for identifying suspected locations. Third, field expeditions of searching for features of war were conducted through guidance of Global Navigation Satellite System—Real-Time Kinetics (GNSS-RTK). Fourth, the found features were 3D-laser scanned to generate mesh models as a digital archive and validate the findings of DTM-RRIM. This study represents a reverse-engineering effort to reconstruct the planned Japanese defense tactics of guerilla fight and Kamikaze grottos that were never used in Hong Kong. Full article
