Background/Objective: Sarcopenia is a predictor of poor surgical outcomes in older adults. The Psoas Muscle Index (PMI), calculated from routine preoperative CT scans, has been proposed as an imaging-based marker of physiological reserve, but its diagnostic utility in vascular surgery remains unclear. We aimed to assess the predictive value of PMI for early complications following elective abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair in two European centers. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 245 patients who underwent open or endovascular AAA repair between 2018 and 2022 in Poland and The Netherlands. PMI was measured at the level of third lumbar vertebrae (L3) level, normalized to height, and stratified into center-specific tertiles. Early complications were compared across tertiles, procedures, and centers. Multivariate logistic regression was used to adjust for age, comorbidities, and procedure type. Results: Low PMI was significantly associated with early complications in EVAR patients at the Polish center (p = 0.004). No associations were found in open repair or at the Dutch center. Mean PMI values did not differ significantly between centers. Conclusions: PMI may serve as a context-dependent imaging biomarker for early risk stratification following AAA repair, particularly in endovascular cases. Its predictive value is influenced by institutional and procedural factors, highlighting the need for prospective validation and standardization before clinical adoption. Full article

With increasing urban economic development, some industrial parks and residential areas are being situated adjacent to each other, creating a potential risk of soil and groundwater contamination from the wastewater and solid waste produced by enterprises. This contamination poses a threat to the health of nearby residents. Currently, groundwater pollution prevention and control zoning in China primarily targets groundwater environmental pollution risks and does not consider the health risks associated with groundwater exposure in industry–city integration areas. Therefore, a scientific assessment of environmental risks in industry–city integration areas is essential for effectively managing groundwater pollution. This study focuses on the high frequency and rapid pace of human activities in industry–city integration areas. It combines health risk assessment and groundwater pollution simulation results with traditional groundwater pollution control classification outcomes to develop a groundwater pollution risk zoning framework specifically suited to these integrated areas. Using this framework, we systematically assessed groundwater pollution risks in a representative industry–city integration area in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in China and delineated groundwater pollution risk zones to provide a scientific basis for local groundwater environmental management. The assessment results indicate that the total area of groundwater pollution risk control zones is 30.37 km2, accounting for 19.06% of the total study area. The first-level control zone covers 5.38 km2 (3.38% of the total area), while the secondary control zone spans 24.99 km2 (15.68% of the total area). The first-level control zone is concentrated within industrial clusters, whereas the secondary control zone is widely distributed throughout the region. In comparison to traditional assessment methods, the zoning results derived from this study are more suitable for industry–city integration areas. This study also provides groundwater management recommendations for such areas, offering valuable insights for groundwater control in integrated industrial–residential zones. Full article

Background/Objectives: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is frequently complicated by pulmonary hypertension (PH), which is associated with reduced exercise capacity and poor prognosis. Early and accurate non-invasive detection of PH remains a clinical challenge. This study evaluated whether combining quantitative CT analysis of lung fibrosis with cardiac MRI-derived measures of right ventricular (RV) function improves the diagnostic accuracy of PH in patients with ILD. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 72 ILD patients who underwent chest CT, cardiac MRI, and right heart catheterization (RHC). Lung fibrosis was quantified using a Gaussian Histogram Normalized Correlation (GHNC) software that computed the proportions of diseased lung, ground-glass opacity (GGO), honeycombing, reticulation, consolidation, and emphysema. MRI was used to assess RV end-systolic volume (RVESV), ejection fraction, and RV longitudinal strain. PH was defined as a mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) ≥ 20 mmHg and pulmonary vascular resistance ≥ 3 Wood units on RHC. Results: Compared to patients without PH, those with PH (n = 21) showed significantly reduced RV strain (−13.4 ± 5.1% vs. −16.4 ± 5.2%, p = 0.026) and elevated RVESV (74.2 ± 18.3 mL vs. 59.5 ± 14.2 mL, p = 0.003). CT-derived indices also differed significantly: diseased lung area (56.4 ± 17.2% vs. 38.4 ± 12.5%, p < 0.001), GGO (11.8 ± 3.6% vs. 8.65 ± 4.3%, p = 0.005), and honeycombing (17.7 ± 4.9% vs. 12.8 ± 6.4%, p = 0.0027) were all more prominent in the PH group. In receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, diseased lung area demonstrated an area under the curve of 0.778 for detecting PH. This increased to 0.847 with the addition of RVESV, and further to 0.854 when RV strain was included. Combined models showed significant improvement in risk reclassification: net reclassification improvement was 0.700 (p = 0.002) with RVESV and 0.684 (p = 0.004) with RV strain; corresponding IDI values were 0.0887 (p = 0.03) and 0.1222 (p = 0.01), respectively. Conclusions: Combining CT-based fibrosis quantification with cardiac MRI-derived RV functional assessment enhances the non-invasive diagnosis of PH in ILD patients. This integrated imaging approach significantly improves diagnostic precision and may facilitate earlier, more targeted interventions in the management of ILD-associated PH. Full article

Background: Polygenic risk scores (PRS) have emerged as promising tools for disease risk stratification. However, their validity across different populations remains unclear, particularly for autoimmune diseases, where environmental factors may play crucial roles. Methods: We calculated the population-level PRS for Sjögren’s syndrome using seven validated genetic variants (PGS001308) and allele frequency data from the 1000 Genomes Project Phase 3 for five European populations (CEU, TSI, FIN, GBR, and IBS). PRS values were correlated with published prevalence estimates from a systematic literature review. Statistical analyses included Pearson’s correlation and sensitivity analyses. Results: PRS values varied across European populations, ranging from 0.317 in the Spanish population to 0.370 in the Northern European population. A non-significant negative trend was observed between population PRS and Sjögren’s syndrome prevalence (r = −0.407, R2 = 0.166). Italy showed the lowest genetic risk score (TSI: 0.349) but the highest disease prevalence (58.2 per 100,000), while Northern European populations demonstrated a higher PRS but lower prevalence. Conclusions: No significant correlation was found between genetic risk scores and disease prevalence in this limited sample of five European populations. Larger studies are needed to clarify the relationship between polygenic risk and disease prevalence. Full article

Tunnel construction poses significant safety challenges due to confined spaces, limited visibility, and the dynamic movement of labourers and machinery. This study addresses a critical gap in real-time, bidirectional proximity monitoring by developing and validating a prototype early-warning system that integrates real-time location systems (RTLS) with long-range (LoRa) wireless communication and ultra-wideband (UWB) positioning. The system comprises Arduino nano microcontrollers, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, and piezo buzzers to detect and signal proximity breaches between workers and equipment. Using an action research approach, three pilot case studies were conducted in a simulated tunnel environment to test the system’s effectiveness in both static and dynamic risk scenarios. The results showed that the system accurately tracked proximity and generated timely alerts when safety thresholds were crossed, although minor delays of 5–8 s and slight positional inaccuracies were noted. These findings confirm the system’s capacity to enhance situational awareness and reduce reliance on manual safety protocols. The study contributes to the tunnel safety literature by demonstrating the feasibility of low-cost, real-time monitoring solutions that simultaneously track labour and machinery. The proposed RTLS framework offers practical value for safety managers and informs future research into automated safety systems in complex construction environments. Full article

Background: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) is essential for evaluating older cancer patients, but significant gaps persist in both research and clinical practice. This study aimed (I) to identify the CGA elements that most influence anti-cancer treatment decisions in older patients and (II) to explore the predictive value of CGA components for mortality. Methods: This observational study included older patients with newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed solid or hematological cancers, recruited consecutively from 2003 to 2023. Participants were followed for four years. The data collected included CGA measures of functional (Activities of Daily Living-ADL), cognitive (Mini-Mental State Examination-MMSE), and emotional (Geriatric Depression Scale-GDS) domains. Patients were categorized into frail, vulnerable, or fit groups based on Balducci’s criteria. Statistical analyses included decision tree modeling and Cox regression to identify predictors of mortality. Results: A total of 7022 patients (3222 females) were included, with a mean age of 78.3 ± 12.9 years. The key CGA factors influencing treatment decisions were ADL (first step), cohabitation status (second step), and age (last step). After four years, 21.9% patients had died. Higher GDS scores (OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.01–1.07, p = 0.04) were independently associated with survival in men and living with family members (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.35–2.07, p < 0.001) in women. Younger patients (<77 years) showed both MMSE and GDS as significant risk factors for mortality. Conclusions: Functional capacity, cohabitation status, and GDS scores are crucial for guiding treatment decisions and predicting mortality in older cancer patients, emphasizing the need for a multidimensional geriatric assessment. The varying characteristics of grid-connected energy resources necessitate a clear and effective approach for managing and scheduling generation units. Without proper control, high levels of renewable integration can pose challenges to optimal dispatch, especially as more generation sources, like wind and solar PV, are introduced. As a result, conventional power sources require an advanced management system, for instance, a virtual power plant (VPP), capable of accurately monitoring power supply and demand. This study thoroughly explores the dispatch of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and diesel generators (DGs) through a distributionally robust joint chance-constrained optimization (DR-JCCO) framework utilizing the conditional value at risk (CVaR) and heuristic-X (H-X) algorithm, structured as a bilevel optimization problem. Furthermore, Binomial expansion (BE) is employed to linearize the model, enabling the assessment of BESS dispatch through a mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPECs). The findings confirm the effectiveness of the DRO-CVaR and H-X methods in dispatching grid network resources and BE under the MPEC framework. Full article

Background: Sustainability in supply chain management (SCM) practices is becoming increasingly important as environmental responsibility and social concerns, as well as enterprises’ competitiveness in terms of innovation, risk, and economic performance, become increasingly urgent. This paper aims to identify and prioritize concepts for implementing sustainable supply chains, drawing on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) and green supply chain management (GSCM) techniques. Corporate supply chain managers across various industries, markets, and supply chain segments brainstormed management practices to enhance the sustainability of their supply chains. Four industry sectors were surveyed across five different value chain segments. Methods: A group concept mapping (GCM) approach incorporating multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was used. A hierarchy of practices is proposed, and hypotheses are developed about achievability and impact. Results: A decision-making matrix prioritizes eight solution concepts based on two axes: impact (I) and ease of implementation (EoI). Conclusions: Eight concepts are prioritized based on the optimal effectiveness of implementing the solutions. Pattern matching reveals differences between emerging and developed markets, as well as supply chain segments, that decision-makers should be aware of. By analyzing supply chains from a multi-part perspective, this research goes beyond empirical studies based on a single industry, geographic region, or example case. Full article

Distribution and Ecological Risk Assessment of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Chinese Soils: A Review

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are emerging pollutants of global concern due to their high environmental persistence and bioaccumulative characteristics. This study investigates PFAS concentrations in soils from China through an extensive literature review, covering soil samples from seventeen provinces and the years from 2009 to 2024. It was found that the total concentration of PFAS in soil ranged from 0.25 to 6240 ng/g, with the highest contamination levels observed in coastal provinces, particularly Fujian (620 ng/g) and Guangdong (1090 ng/g). Moreover, Fujian Province ranked the highest among multiple regions with a median PFAS concentration of 15.7 ng/g for individual compounds. Ecological risk assessment, focusing on areas where perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were identified as the primary soil PFAS compounds, showed moderate ecological risk from PFOA in Shanghai (0.24), while PFOS posed a high ecological risk in Fujian and Guangdong, with risk values of 43.3 and 1.4, respectively. Source analysis revealed that anthropogenic activities, including PFAS production, firefighting foam usage, and landfills, were the primary contributors to soil contamination. Moreover, soil PFASs tend to migrate into groundwater via adsorption and seepage, ultimately entering the human body through bioaccumulation or drinking water, posing health risks. These findings enhance our understanding of PFAS distribution and associated risks in Chinese soils, providing crucial insights for pollution management, source identification, and regulation strategies in diverse areas. The production of winter wheat, spring barley, spring oilseed rape, and field beans requires detailed experimental data studies to analyze the quality and productivity of spring barley grain under different cultivation and tillage conditions. As the world’s population grows, more food is required to maintain a stable food supply chain. For many years, intensive farming systems have been used to meet this need. Today, intensive climate change events and other global environmental challenges are driving a shift towards sustainable use of natural resources and simplified cultivation methods that produce high-quality and productive food. It is important to study different tillage systems in order to understand how these methods can affect the chemical composition and nutritional value of the grain. Both agronomic and economic aspects contribute to the complexity of this field and their analysis will undoubtedly contribute to the development of more efficient agricultural practice models and the promotion of more conscious consumption. An appropriate tillage system should be oriented towards local climatic characteristics and people’s needs. The impact of reduced tillage on these indicators in spring barley production is still insufficiently investigated and requires further analysis at a global level. This study was carried out at Vytautas Magnus University Agriculture Academy (Lithuania) in 2022–2024. Treatments were arranged using a split-plot design. Based on a long-term tillage experiment, five tillage systems were tested: deep and shallow plowing, deep cultivation–chiseling, shallow cultivation–disking, and no-tillage. The results show that in 2022–2024, the hectoliter weight and moisture content of spring barley grains increased, but protein content and germination decreased in shallowly plowed fields. In deep cultivation–chiseling fields, the protein content (0.1–1.1%) of spring barley grains decreased, and in shallow cultivation–disking fields, the moisture content (0.2–0.3%) decreased. In all fields, the simplified tillage systems applied reduced spring barley germination (0.4–16.7%). Tillage systems and meteorological conditions are the two main forces shaping the quality indicators of spring barley grains. Properly selected tillage systems and favorable climatic conditions undoubtedly contribute to better grain properties and higher yields, while reducing the risk of disease spread. Full article

Antibiotic residues in poultry pose health and resistance risks, necessitating breed-specific WDTs. In this study, the residue elimination patterns of seven antibiotics in Taihang chicken tissues under free-range conditions were studied and the appropriate WDT was formulated. A total of 240 healthy Taihang chickens aged 100 days were randomly divided into 8 groups, each comprising 30 chickens. Chickens in groups 1 to 7 were administered oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, erythromycin, tylosin, tylvalosin, lincomycin, and tiamulin, respectively. Regarding the administration method, we adopted the highest dose and maximum course of treatment recommended by the Veterinary Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China. Group 8 served as the control group. Muscle, sebum, liver, and kidney samples were collected at 4 h, 1 d, 2 d, 3 d, 5 d, 7 d, 10 d, 13 d, and 16 d after drug withdrawal. Our results demonstrated that the drug residues after drug withdrawal gradually decreased with the increase in drug withdrawal days, and the elimination rate in the early stage of drug withdrawal was significantly faster than that in the later stage. At 4 h after drug withdrawal, the drug residues in various tissues reached their highest values. In most cases, the drug concentrations in the kidney and liver were higher than those in the muscles and sebum; however, some drugs also exhibited concentration peaks in the sebum. On the first day of drug withdrawal, the amount of residues in various tissues decreased rapidly. In general, the elimination rate of various drugs in the muscles, liver, and kidneys is faster but slower in the sebum. Based on the WDT calculation software WT1.4, the recommended WDTs for oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, erythromycin, tylosin, tylvalosin, lincomycin, and tiamulin chickens are 4 d, 5 d, 11 d, 8 d, 13 d, 13 d, and 7 d, respectively. Although Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) offer valuable services, they also introduce certain risks—particularly to individuals on the ground—referred to as third-party risk (TPR). In general, ground-level TPR tends to rise alongside the density of people who might use these services, leading current regulations to heavily restrict UAS operations in populated regions. These operational constraints hinder the ability to gather safety insights through the conventional method of learning from real-world incidents. To address this, a promising alternative is to use dynamic simulations that model UAS collisions with humans, providing critical data to inform safer UAS design. In the automotive industry, the modelling and simulation of car crashes has been well developed. For small UAS, this dynamical modelling and simulation approach has focused on the effect of the varying weight and kinetic energy of the UAS, as well as the geometry and location of the impact on a human body. The objective of this research is to quantify the effects of UAS material and shape on-ground TPR through dynamical modelling and simulation. To accomplish this objective, five camera–drone types are selected that have similar weights, although they differ in terms of airframe structure and materials. For each of these camera–drones, a dynamical model is developed to simulate impact, with a biomechanical human body model validated for impact. The injury levels and probability of fatality (PoF) results, obtained through conducting simulations with these integrated dynamical models, are significantly different for the camera–drone types. For the uncontrolled vertical impact of a 1.2 kg UAS at 18 m/s on a model of a human head, differences in UAS designs even yield an order in magnitude difference in PoF values. Moreover, the highest PoF value is a factor of 2 lower than the parametric PoF models used in standing regulation. In the same scenario for UAS types with a weight of 0.4 kg, differences in UAS designs even considered yield an order when regarding the magnitude difference in PoF values. These findings confirm that the material and shape design of a UAS plays an important role in reducing ground TPR, and that these effects can be addressed by using dynamical modelling and simulation during UAS design. Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice (Oryza sativa L.) poses serious health risks for human, necessitating effective mitigation strategies. This study investigated the effects of Cd stress on iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and Cd accumulation and translocation in rice varieties with high (MY46) or low (ZS97B) Cd accumulation capacities grown in acidic and alkaline soils. Results demonstrated that Cd stress significantly inhibited plant growth, reducing plant height, shoot biomass, and grain yield in both soil types. Cd accumulation increased in roots, shoots, and grains, while Fe, Mn, and Zn concentrations decreased markedly. Molecular analysis revealed upregulation of metal transporter genes (OsIRT1, OsNRAMP1, OsNRAMP5) and the vacuolar sequestration gene (OsHMA3) in roots under Cd exposure. The translocation factor (TF) values of Mn and Zn from root to shoot were reduced in acidic soils, whereas Mn and Zn TFs exhibited an increasing trend in alkaline soils despite Cd exposure. Furthermore, correlation analyses indicated Mn and Zn play crucial roles in suppressing Cd accumulation in both acidic and alkaline soils. These findings provide critical insights for developing soil-specific strategies to reduce Cd accumulation in rice through micronutrient management. Full article

Objective: This study aimed to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of dynamic rod stabilization with and without transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) in patients undergoing surgery for degenerative lumbar instability. Specifically, we evaluated the prognostic value of hybrid systems in reducing adjacent segment disease (ASD), enhancing fusion rates, and improving functional outcomes. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 62 patients treated between 2019 and 2022. Group 1 (n = 34) underwent dynamic rod stabilization alone, while Group 2 (n = 28) received dynamic stabilization combined with TLIF. Radiological assessments included disk height index (DHI) and fusion rates. Clinical outcomes were measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for back and leg pain at baseline, 12, and 24 months. Statistical analysis was performed using Jamovi® software (version 2.4.1). Results: The hybrid group (dynamic + TLIF) demonstrated significantly higher anterior fusion rates (p < 0.001) and greater improvement in VAS scores for back (p = 0.005) and leg pain (p < 0.001) at 12 months. Although operative time was longer (p = 0.002), there was no significant difference in hospital stay (p = 0.635). No significant differences were observed in ASD development (p = 0.11) or pseudoarthrosis (p = 0.396). The hybrid group maintained better lumbar lordosis and higher adjacent segment DHI. Conclusions: Hybrid dynamic stabilization combined with TLIF provides superior clinical outcomes and fusion rates compared to dynamic stabilization alone, without significantly increasing the risk of ASD. These findings support the use of hybrid constructs as a balanced strategy for treating degenerative lumbar instability. Full article

Background: The rising demand for aesthetic dental treatments has spurred interest in peroxide-free color correctors as alternatives to traditional hydrogen peroxide formulations, which are associated with tooth sensitivity and potential enamel demineralization. This systematic review evaluates the whitening efficacy and safety profile of hydrogen peroxide-free color corrector (HPFCC) products, focusing on color change metrics, enamel and dentin integrity, and adverse effects. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science throughout January 2025 for randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and in vitro experiments comparing HPFCC to placebo or peroxide-based agents. The data extraction covered study design, sample characteristics, intervention details, shade improvement (ΔE00 or CIE Lab), enamel/dentin mechanical properties (microhardness, roughness, elastic modulus), and incidence of sensitivity or tissue irritation. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane tool for clinical studies and the QUIN tool for in vitro research. Results: Six studies (n = 20–80 samples or subjects) met the inclusion criteria. In vitro, HPFCC achieved mean ΔE00 values of 3.5 (bovine incisors; n = 80) and 2.8 (human molars; n = 20), versus up to 8.9 for carbamide peroxide (p < 0.01). Across studies, HPFCC achieved a mean ΔE00 of 2.8–3.5 surpassing the perceptibility threshold of 2.7 and approaching the clinical acceptability benchmark of 3.3. Surface microhardness increased by 12.9 ± 11.7 VHN with HPFCC (p < 0.001), and ultramicrohardness rose by 110 VHN over 56 days in prolonged use studies. No significant enamel erosion or dentin roughness changes were observed, and the sensitivity incidence remained below 3%. Conclusions: These findings derive from one clinical trial (n = 60) and five in vitro studies (n = 20–80), encompassing violet-pigment serums and gels with differing concentrations. Due to heterogeneity in designs, formulations, and outcome measures, we conducted a narrative synthesis rather than a meta-analysis. Although HPFCC ΔE00 values were lower than those of carbamide peroxide, they consistently exceeded perceptibility thresholds while maintaining enamel integrity and causing sensitivity in fewer than 3% of subjects, supporting HPFCCs as moderate but safe alternatives for young patients.
