Background/Objectives: Hypertension (HTN) continues to be a leading cause of death and disability in older adults, especially in the southeastern United States. A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the relationships among measured, diagnosed, and treated (HTN) in community-dwelling adults participating in student-led health screenings in eastern Alabama. Methods: Between 2017 and 2019, students from health-related disciplines facilitated screenings at 23 community and independent living sites to conduct health assessments, including measuring blood pressure (BP), obtaining medical history, and evaluating current prescriptions. Statistical analyses including chi-square tests, t-tests, and backward stepwise linear regression were performed. Results: The current sample includes data from 357 adults aged 60 to 99 years (mean age 74.6 ± 8.7), who were 70.9% females, 60.8% identifying as Black/African American (BA), and 36.8% residing in rural areas. The majority of clients had a prior HTN diagnosis (71.1%) and/or currently measured HTN (78.7%). Forty-three percent of adults screened had measured, diagnosed, and pharmaceutically treated HTN, while 31% had measured but untreated HTN. Black clients had higher measured systolic and diastolic BP and were more likely to also have been diagnosed with HTN (p < 0.05 for all). Linear regression indicated that lower systolic BP was predicted by not living alone (p = 0.003), White race (p = 0.004), and previous HTN diagnosis (p = 0.012), while female gender (p = 0.079) and decreasing body mass index (p = 0.053) had marginal predictive value. Conclusions: These results indicate that awareness and screening of HTN in this population are noteworthy, though management of the disease through ongoing screening and referrals is essential to reduce disparities. The sensory quality of black tea is intrinsically linked to cultivar genetics, yet comprehensive characterization of flavor compounds in emerging northern Guangdong black tea (NGBT) remains limited. This study employed high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) and headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with GC-MS (HS-SPME-GC-MS) to analyze non-volatile and volatile compounds in five NGBT cultivars—Jinshahong (JSH), Danxia No.1 (DXY), Danxia No.2 (DXE), Yingde Black Tea (QTZ), and Yinghong No.9 (YHJ)—alongside sensory evaluation. Orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) identified key non-volatile discriminants (VIP > 1) ranked by contribution: total catechins > simple catechins > CG > EGCG > ester catechins > EGC. HS-SPME-GC-MS detected 97 volatiles, with eight aroma-active compounds exhibiting OAV > 1 and VIP > 1: Geraniol > Methyl salicylate > Linalool > β-Myrcene > Benzyl alcohol > (Z)-Linalool Oxide > Phenethyl alcohol > (Z)-Jasmone. These compounds drive cultivar-specific aromas in NGBTs. Findings establish a theoretical framework for evaluating cultivar-driven flavor quality and provide novel insights for targeted breeding and processing optimization of NGBTs. Full article

Disparities in Treatment Outcomes for Cannabis Use Disorder Among Adolescents

Background: This study examined treatment outcomes for cannabis use disorder (CUD) among adolescents (12–17 years old) in the United States. Methods: Data from the 2018–2021 Treatment Episode Data Set-Discharges (TEDS-D) included 40,054 adolescents diagnosed with CUD. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and multivariable logistic regression assessed treatment outcomes and factors associated with treatment completion. Results: Only 36.8% of adolescents completed treatment. The most common reasons for not completing treatment were dropping out (28.4%) and transferring to another facility/program (17.0%). Males and Black non-Hispanic adolescents had lower odds of completing treatment (OR = 0.79, 95%CI: 0.75–0.84), while Hispanic (OR = 1.13, 95%CI: 1.08–1.18), Asian (OR = 1.56, 95%CI: 1.3–1.86) and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander adolescents (OR = 2.31, 95%CI: 2.04–2.61) had higher odds of completion compared to their White counterparts. Independent living arrangements, homelessness, arrests in the past 30 days and younger age (<15 years old) decreased the likelihood of treatment completion. Adolescents with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders also had lower completion rates (OR = 0.79, 95%CI: 0.77–0.86). Referral from schools/employers and treatment settings were associated with a higher success, particularly with stays of 4–6 months and 7–12 months. Conclusion: This study highlights the need for targeted CUD treatment programs that support at-risk adolescents, especially those experiencing homelessness or facing legal issues. High dropout and transition rates suggest a need for continuity of care and program integration between facilities. Strengthening coordination among public health officials, community organizations, and stakeholders is essential to developing culturally responsive treatment interventions that address social determinants of health, substance use, and mental health in this vulnerable population. Background/Objectives: As high-acuity vision is limited to a very small visual angle, examination of a scene requires multiple fixations. Simultanagnosia, a disorder wherein elements of a scene can be perceived correctly but cannot be integrated into a coherent whole, has been parsed into dorsal and ventral forms. In ventral simultanagnosia, limited visual integration is possible. This case study was the first to record gaze during the presentation of a series of visual stimuli, which required the processing of local and global elements. We hypothesised that gaze patterns would differ with successful processing and that feature integration could be disrupted by distractors. Methods: The patient received a neuropsychological assessment and underwent CT and MRI. Eye movements were recorded during the following tasks: (1) famous face identification, (2) facial emotion recognition, (3) identification of Ishihara colour plates, and (4) identification of both local and global letters in Navon composite letters, presented either alone or surrounded by filled black circles, which we hypothesised would impair global processing by disrupting fixation. Results: The patients identified no famous faces but scanned them qualitatively normally. The only emotion to be consistently recognised was happiness, whose scanpath differed from the other emotions. She identified none of the Ishihara plates, although her colour vision was normal on the FM-15, even mapping an unseen digit with fixations and tracing it with her finger. For plain Navon figures, she correctly identified 20/20 local and global letters; for the “dotted” figures, she was correct 19/20 times for local letters and 0/20 for global letters (chi-squared NS for local, p < 0.0001, global), with similar fixation of salient elements for both. Conclusions: Contrary to our hypothesis, gaze behaviour was largely independent of the ability to process global stimuli, showing for the first time that normal acquisition of visual information did not ensure its integration into a percept. The core defect lay in processing, not acquisition. In the novel Navon task, adding distractors abolished feature integration without affecting the fixation of the salient elements, confirming for the first time that distractors could disrupt the processing, not the acquisition, of visual information in this disorder. To address the impact of insulation medium degradation in the arc quenching chambers of ultra-high-voltage SF6 circuit breakers on phase-controlled switching accuracy caused by multiple operations throughout the service life, this paper proposes an adaptive switching algorithm. First, a modified formula for the breakdown voltage of mixed gases is derived based on the synergistic effect. Considering the influence of contact gap on electric field distortion, an adaptive switching strategy is designed to quantify the dynamic relationship among operation times, insulation strength degradation, and electric field distortion. Then, multi-round switching-on and switching-off tests are carried out under the condition of fixed single-arc ablation amount, and the laws of voltage–current, gas decomposition products, and pre-breakdown time are obtained. The test data are processed by the least squares method, adaptive switching algorithm, and machine learning method. The results show that the coincidence degree of the pre-breakdown time obtained by the adaptive switching algorithm and the test value reaches 90%. Compared with the least squares fitting, this algorithm achieves a reasonable balance between goodness of fit and complexity, with prediction deviations tending to be randomly distributed, no obvious systematic offset, and low dispersion degree. It can also explain the physical mechanism of the decay of insulation degradation rate with the number of operations. Compared with the machine learning method, this algorithm has stronger generalization ability, effectively overcoming the defects of difficult interpretation of physical causes and the poor engineering adaptability of the black box model. Investigation of the Distribution of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural in Black Garlic from Different Regions and Its Correlation with Key Process-Related Biochemical Components

Black garlic is a thermally processed product derived from fresh garlic through controlled high-temperature and -humidity conditions. During this process, the formation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a potentially harmful byproduct, is a major quality and safety concern in food processing. This study systematically investigated the distributions of 5-HMF and key process-related biochemical components in black garlic samples from three major production regions in China—Jiangsu, Yunnan, and Shandong. Additionally, correlations between 5-HMF and biochemical components—reducing sugars, amino acids, and organic acids—were analyzed to inform process optimization strategies. Results showed significant regional variation in 5-HMF content, with Jiangsu black garlic exhibiting the highest levels, followed by Yunnan and Shandong (p < 0.05). Partial least squares regression analysis (PLSR) indicated that the key biochemical factors regulating 5-HMF accumulation are primarily organic acids. Among them, citric acid was identified as the most important negative regulator (VIP = 3.11). Although acetic acid (VIP = 1.38) and malic acid (VIP = 1.03) showed positive correlations with 5-HMF, aspartic acid (VIP = 0.41) and fructose (VIP = 0.43) exhibited a weak positive correlation, and arginine (VIP = 0.89) showed weak negative correlations, their effects were far less significant than that of citric acid. Based on these findings, we propose a potential strategy for reducing 5-HMF content in black garlic—selecting raw material cultivars with higher endogenous citric acid levels or exploring the exogenous addition and regulation of citric acid during processing. This study provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the accumulation mechanism of 5-HMF in black garlic and suggests new potential regulatory directions for controlling its content. Global mean sea level has been rising steadily since the early 1990s, yet regional sea level changes exhibit complex spatial variability that frequently contrasts with global trends. Investigating sea level variations in semi-enclosed basins such as the Black Sea is crucial for elucidating regional responses to climate change and characterizing its unique spatiotemporal evolution patterns. In this study, we employ satellite altimetry (SA) data to study sea level changes, spatial variability, and seasonal patterns in the Black Sea over eight distinct time periods with temporally correlated noise, and our results show good consistency with existing studies. The results show that sea level changes are non-linear over time and exhibit spatial variability in the Black Sea. The estimated sea level trend fluctuates over brief intervals, but extended time series provide reduced uncertainty in the trend and more precise estimation over a 28-year time series. The annual amplitude and phase derived from virtual altimetry data (1993–2020) exhibit a distinct seasonal pattern, with peak sea levels typically occurring between November and February. Furthermore, to reduce the uncertainty induced by noise in the sea surface height (SSH) time series, principal component analysis (PCA) was utilized to denoise the SSH data from 1993 to 2020, yielding a sea level trend of 1.76 ± 0.56 mm/yr. Denoising reduced the trend uncertainty by 57%, decreased the root mean square error of the SSH series by 5.06 mm, and decreased the annual amplitude by 23.35%. Full article

We study the charged black-hole solutions of a 2 + 1 nonlinear electrodynamical theory with a cosmological constant. Considered as a one-parameter group of theories (the exponent of the squared Maxwell tensor), the causal structure of all possible black holes is scrutinized. We analyze the singularity character that each theory delivers, together with their horizons and the plausible limitations in black-hole charges. The investigation demonstrates a rich structure of three different groups of theories according to the qualitative behavior of the singularity, horizons and limitations in the geometric charges. For such groups, we study the effect of a scalar field propagating in the spacetime of fixed black holes. All analyzed geometries are stable to such linear perturbations, evolving as usual quasinormal spectra of the black holes calculated for the different cases. Full article

Investigating the Influence of the Weed Layer on Crop Canopy Reflectance and LAI Inversion Using Simulations and Measurements in a Sugarcane Field

Recent research in agricultural remote sensing mainly focuses on how soil background affects canopy reflectance and the inversion of LAI, while often overlooking the influence of the weed layer. The coexistence of crop and weed layers forms two-layered vegetation canopies in tall crops such as sugarcane and maize. Although radiative transfer models can simulate the weed layer’s influence on canopy reflectance and LAI inversion, few experimental investigations use in situ measurement data to verify these effects. Here, we propose a practical background modification scheme in which black material with near-zero reflectance covers the weed layer and alters the background spectrum of crop canopies. We conduct an experimental investigation in a sugarcane field with different background properties (i.e., bare soil and a weed layer). Tower-based and UAV-based hyperspectral measurements examine the spectral differences in sugarcane canopies with and without the black covering. We then use LAI measurements to evaluate the weed layer’s impact on LAI inversion from UAV-based hyperspectral data through a hybrid inversion method. We find that the weed layer significantly affects the canopy reflectance spectrum, changing it by 13.58% and 42.53% in the near-infrared region for tower-based and UAV-based measurements, respectively. Furthermore, the weed layer substantially interferes with LAI inversion of sugarcane canopies, causing significant overestimation. Estimated LAIs of sugarcane canopies with a soil background generally align well with measured values (root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.69 m2/m2), whereas those with a weed background are considerably overestimated (RMSE = 2.07 m2/m2). We suggest that this practical background modification scheme quantifies the weed layer’s influence on crop canopy reflectance from a measurement perspective and that the weed layer should be considered during the inversion of crop LAI. Utilizing the nonlinear effects of black phosphorus (BP), the self-starting threshold and noise performance were optimized in a figure-9 mode-locked fiber laser configuration. Experimental results demonstrate that a mode-locked pulse output with a spectral bandwidth of 8.2 nm, center wavelength of 1033.5 nm, and repetition rate of 42 MHz is obtained. Compared with single-mechanism mode-locked lasers, the self-starting mode-locked threshold is reduced by 100 mW. Regarding noise characteristics, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is enhanced to 68.4 dB and the phase noise is reduced to −115.6 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz to 10 MHz frequency offsets. The root mean square (RMS) of the output power is optimized to 0.9% and phase noise jitter is reduced to 1.9%. This work proves a novel approach to tackle the challenges of high self-starting thresholds and instability in mode-locked lasers. Full article

Background: This study examines disparities in HIV-related healthcare access, support, and treatment adherence between rural and urban Black/African American populations in Georgia, USA, emphasizing structural, socioeconomic, and stigma-related barriers affecting health outcomes. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted using structured surveys administered via RedCap from August to December 2023. Participants (n = 55) were recruited through community-based HIV organizations, healthcare providers, and advocacy networks. The survey assessed demographic factors, healthcare access, adherence to treatment, support systems, and experiences with stigma. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics, version 28.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA), with chi-square tests examining associations between geographic location and HIV-related outcomes. Results: Findings indicate significant disparities in HIV care access and support. Urban participants were more likely to receive family and friend support (p < 0.01), financial assistance through the Ryan White Program (p = 0.01), and timely linkage to care within one week of diagnosis (p < 0.05). Rural participants reported lower educational attainment, income levels, and limited healthcare access, contributing to poorer health outcomes. No significant differences were observed in PrEP or condom use. Conclusions: The study underscores the need for targeted interventions. Expanding telehealth, enhancing community outreach, and reducing stigma through policy reforms are critical to improving HIV-related health outcomes in rural Georgia. Full article

Utilizing the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, two scenarios were analyzed: the WRF Control Run, which maintained unchanged LULC, and the WRF Sensitivity Experiment, which converted 56.5% of forested areas into cropland to assess the impact on storm dynamics. Quantitative comparisons of predicted rainfall from both simulations were conducted against observed data. The control run demonstrated a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 1.64, indicating accurate rainfall predictions. In contrast, the modified scenario yielded an RMSE of 2.01, suggesting lower reliability. The Mean Bias (MB) values were 1.32 for the control run and 1.58 for the modified scenario, revealing notable discrepancies in accuracy. The coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.247 for the control run and 0.270 for the modified scenario. The Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) value was 0.1567 for the control run but dropped to −0.2257 following LULC modifications. Sensitivity analyses revealed a 60% increase in heat flux and a 36% rise in precipitation, underscoring the significant impact of LULC on meteorological outcomes. While this study concentrated on the Black Belt region, the methodologies employed could apply to various other areas, though caution is advised when generalizing these results to different climates and socio-economic contexts. Further research is necessary to enhance the model’s applicability across diverse environments. Full article

Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with significant increases in mental-health-related concerns in adolescents, including eating disorders. Disparities in screening, diagnosis, and treatment impact adolescents with eating disorders. This study aimed to describe the patterns in the prevalence and the associations between eating disorder diagnoses and demographic factors in adolescent patients since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study examining adolescent patients (aged 12 to 21) with an eating disorder (ED) diagnosis documented between January 2019 and July 2023 using Epic Systems Corporation’s Cosmos, a de-identified dataset aggregated from electronic health record (EHR) data. We examined the differences in demographic factors by utilizing chi-square and Kruskal–Wallis rank sum tests. Results: A total of 82,435 distinct adolescent and young adult patients with eating disorder diagnoses were included in the analytical dataset. The overall prevalence of EDs has increased since 2019. The median age of patients with an ED decreased between 2019 and 2023. There was a decrease in other eating disorder diagnoses and an increase in avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) during the study period. There was a decrease in the proportion of individuals who identified as White and an increase in the proportion of adolescents from historically minoritized racial and ethnic groups (i.e., African American or Black and Hispanic). There was also an increase, during this study period, in the proportion of adolescents with an ED diagnosis who were from more socially vulnerable communities. Conclusions: Our study describes the changes in the prevalence of sociodemographic factors in adolescent patients with EDs since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Further studies should address screening, diagnostic, and treatment barriers for EDs in historically underserved communities. Full article

Water and salt stress significantly impact the accumulation of crop biomass (TB); however, the relative contributions of photosynthetic, physiological, and morphological factors remain poorly understood. This study aims to comprehensively investigate the effects of water and salt stress on crop growth physiology and identify the primary factors influencing biomass accumulation. We examined four quinoa varieties (Qingli No.1, Qingli No.8, Gongza No.4, and Black quinoa) under four salinity levels (s0: 0 mmol/L, s1: 100 mmol/L, s2: 200 mmol/L, and s3: 300 mmol/L) and two moisture levels (w1: 30% field capacity (FC), w2: 80% FC). Using principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis, we constructed a random forest model (RF) and a partial least-squares path modeling (PLS-PM) framework to elucidate the effects of water and salt stress on quinoa growth physiology and clarify the adaptive mechanisms of quinoa under varying salinity conditions. The results indicate that (1) salinity has a more substantial regulatory effect on the accumulation of proline (Pro) and sodium ions (Na+) than water availability. Under conditions of adequate moisture (w2), the activity of antioxidant enzymes increased in response to mild salinity stress (s1). However, with escalating salinity levels, a significant decrease in enzyme activity was observed (p < 0.05). (2) PCA identified salinity as a key factor significantly influencing physiological changes in quinoa growth. The RF model indicated that, under severe salinity conditions (s3), intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) emerged as a critical driver affecting biomass (TB) accumulation. (3) The PLS-PM model quantified the relative contribution rates of various factors to total biomass (TB). It revealed that, as salinity increased, the path coefficients of photosynthetic factors also rose, but their relative contribution diminished due to a corresponding reduction in the contribution of morphological factors. These findings offer a theoretical foundation and decision-making support for the integrated management of water–salt conditions in saline–alkali agricultural fields, as well as for the cultivation of salt-tolerant crops. China is the place of origin and main producer of black tea worldwide, with Dianhong (DH), Chuanhong (CH), and Keemunhong (KH) being the famous Chinese black teas. The contents of various odor components in black teas differ with their origins. However, the effects of these differences on the presentation of distinctive odor characteristics in various products remain unclear. We aimed to elucidate the odor characteristics and odor compounds of these three black teas; to this end, we performed a sensory evaluation and multivariate statistical analysis based on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS) results. The sensory evaluation revealed that the odor characteristics of DH were floral and fruity, whereas sweet and herbal-like odors were more intense in CH and QH. A total of 119 volatile compounds were detected, with alcohols, aldehydes, and esters being the main volatile compounds. Among them, 41 volatile compounds were identified with an odor activity value (OAV) of >1, and 24 of them were selected through principal component analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis as marker substances to distinguish the three teas; thus, 24 volatile compounds are important odor compounds of DH, CH, and QH.
