Background/Objective: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the leading cause of death in the ageing male population across the globe, and trace metals have garnered much attention due to their sometimes-dual role in cellular mechanisms, as such contribute to the development and progression of prostate cancer. Methods: This review consolidates the results of case-control studies that investigated the concentrations of certain trace metals—Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) in various biological samples. Results: There are decreased concentrations of Se and Zn and increased Cd concentrations in samples of PCa patients when compared to healthy controls. As, Hg, Ni, and Pb concentrations have proven to be insignificant. Conclusions: There are other variables to consider and limitations that need to be investigated in studies of this nature; however, the results have been consistent in that increased exposure to toxic metals such as Cd, along with a deficiency in protective essential nutrients like Zn and Se, tends to produce a prostatic environment. Background/Objectives: Effective nutritional care is a critical component of oncology treatment. Behaviour change techniques (BCTs) are key elements that drive individual behaviour change and are commonly identified within clinical interventions and implementation strategies. Despite their relevance, the application of BCTs in oncology nutrition has not been systematically examined. This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesise the use of BCTs in nutrition interventions and their implementation strategies within adult oncology care. Methods: A search across 10 electronic databases was conducted from inception up to December 2024. Data extraction focused on intervention characteristics, plus implementation barriers, strategies, and outcomes, which were coded using relevant established taxonomies, i.e., Theoretical Domains Framework, Behaviour Change Techniques, and Proctor’s outcomes framework. Study quality was assessed using the QuADS tool. Results: After screening 4055 abstracts and 165 full texts, 38 articles representing 31 unique studies were included. Nutrition interventions (n = 31) spanned across risk screening/assessment, care planning/pathways, nutritional monitoring, and support guidelines. Among the 19 interventions that incorporated BCTs targeting patients and/or healthcare professionals (HCPs), 20 unique BCTs were identified across 97 instances. Separately, implementation strategies reported in 25 of the 38 articles included 96 BCT instances (18 unique) targeting HCPs. BCTs were frequently observed alongside positive outcomes across patient, service, and implementation levels. Conclusions: Application of BCTs in oncology nutrition practice remains implicit and inconsistent. For clinical practice, more explicit specifications of BCTs may support better integration of nutrition care in routine oncology settings. Future research is warranted to test the effectiveness of specific BCTs and their combinations. This can be supported by standardised reporting of intervention content and implementation strategies which can enable identification of patterns of success and optimise replicability. Full article

Background: Peri-implantitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and progressive bone loss around dental implants, presents a significant challenge in contemporary dentistry. Conventional non-surgical treatments often fail to fully eliminate bacterial biofilms, particularly on complex implant surfaces. Laser therapies have emerged as potential adjuncts due to their antimicrobial and bio-modulatory properties. However, their microbiological effectiveness and suitability for individualized patient treatment planning remain unclear. Objective: Τhis study aims to systematically assess and synthesize the microbiological effects of various laser-assisted non-surgical treatments for peri-implantitis compared to conventional mechanical debridement. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251035354). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating microbiological changes following laser-assisted non-surgical treatment of peri-implantitis, with a minimum follow-up of one month, were identified through searches in multiple databases and registries up to February 2025. The ncluded studies used lasers such as diode, Er: YAG, and photodynamic therapy (PDT) either alone or as adjuncts to mechanical debridement. Outcomes of interest included bacterial counts. Risk of bias was assessed using the RoB2 tool, and certainty of evidence was evaluated via GRADE. Quantitative synthesis used random-effects meta-analysis, with standardized mean differences (SMDs) calculated. Results: Eight RCTs involving 266 patients and 335 implants were included in the systematic review. Quantitative synthesis of three pathogens (counts of Fusobacterium nucleatum, P. gingivalis, T. denticola) across three studies displayed no statistically significant differences between laser and control groups at 3 and 6 months (p > 0.05 for all comparisons). When examining individual study findings, PDT, particularly in patients with diabetes or acute abscess, showed short-term reductions in red complex bacteria (e.g., Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola). In contrast, diode and Er: YAG lasers demonstrated inconsistent or transient effects. The quality of evidence was rated as very low according to GRADE. Conclusions: Laser-assisted therapies, especially PDT, may provide targeted microbiological benefit in selected patient groups, supporting their adjunctive use within personalized treatment planning rather than as replacements for mechanical debridement, which remains the gold standard. Further high-quality RCTs incorporating well-defined patient risk profiles, such as systemic conditions and behavioral factors, and precision treatment algorithms are needed. Full article

Background: Digital technologies are increasingly integrated into circular supply chains (CSCs) to enhance resource efficiency and extend product lifecycles. However, the practical adoption of intelligent circular supply chains (iCSCs) remains underexplored. Methods: This study provides a comprehensive review of how digital technologies enable circular practices across industries. It systematically reviews 95 peer-reviewed articles from WoS and Scopus, identifying 107 real-world iCSC cases. The cases are categorized by (1) digital enablers including AI, Big Data, Blockchain, IoT, Digital Twin, Additive Manufacturing, Cloud Platforms, and Cyber-Physical Systems; (2) alignment with Circular Economy (CE); (3) sector-specific circular practices; and (4) mapping implementations to the EU Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP). This study develops a conceptual model illustrating how digital technologies support data-driven decision-making, automation, and circular transitions. Results: The analysis shows IoT, Blockchain, and AI as the most frequently applied technologies, facilitating collaboration, traceability, sustainability, and cost efficiency. “Reduce” and “Recycle” dominate among CE strategies, while circular transition pathways such as sustainable design, waste prevention, and digital platforms link policy to practice. Conclusions: By integrating systematic evidence with a holistic framework, this work provides actionable insights, identifies key implementation gaps, and lays a foundation for advancing iCSCs in research and practice. Background/Objectives: Mathematical modelling provides a quantitative way to describe the fate and action of drugs in the oral cavity, where transport processes are shaped by salivary flow, pellicle formation, biofilm structure and the wash-out effect of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). Local pharmacokinetics in the mouth differ substantially from systemic models, and therefore a dedicated framework is required. The aim of this work was to present a structured, physiologically based concept that links in vitro release testing with local pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Methods: A narrative review with elements of systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science (1980–2025) for publications describing drug release, local PBPK, and PK/PD modelling in the oral cavity. Mathematical formulations were grouped into release kinetics, mini-PBPK transport and local PK/PD relations. Classical models (Higuchi, Korsmeyer–Peppas, Peppas–Sahlin) were integrated with a mini-PBPK structure describing saliva–mucosa–biofilm–pocket interactions. Results: The combined model captures adsorption to pellicle, diffusion within biofilm and wash-out by GCF. It allows simulation of variable clinical conditions, such as inflammation-related changes in QGCF, and links local exposure to pharmacodynamic outcomes. Case studies with PerioChip®, Arestin®, and Atridox® demonstrate how mechanistic models explain observed therapeutic duration and low-systemic exposure. Conclusions: The proposed mini-PBPK framework bridges empirical release data and physiological transport in the oral cavity. It supports rational formulation design, optimisation of local dosage, and personalised prediction of drug retention in gingival pockets. This modelling approach can become a practical tool for the development of dental biomaterials and subgingival therapies. Full article

Objectives. To integrate clinical and economic evidence on the main non-pharmacological interventions aimed to reduce the burden of caregivers of people with dementia, with specific attention to stated preference measures (SPM), Willingness-to-Pay (WTP) and Willingness-to-Accept (WTA), alongside other cost-effectiveness indicators (ICER, QALY). Methods. A systematic review was conducted on randomized and quasi-experimental evaluations, economic models, and preference studies concerning psychoeducational/coping interventions, activity-centered/occupational programs (TAP), technological solutions and tele-support, and goal-oriented cognitive rehabilitation (CR). For each study, the following indexes were extracted: design, sample size, psychological outcomes (anxiety/depression, burden, engagement), utility per QALY, costs per perspective (the health–social and the broader societal perspectives), ICER, WTP/WTA, and sensitivity results. Results. Psychoeducational programs and CR show consistent benefits on distress, anxiety/depression, and caregiver quality of life; TAP reduces caregiver burden and patient behavioral problems, with favorable signs of cost–effectiveness; results on the effects of technologies are heterogeneous, but online modules with telephone support improve psychological morbidity. QALY improvement is generally modest, but the probability of cost-effectiveness remains high when costs do not differ significantly from treatment as usual, or when, from a societal perspective, the unpaid caregiving time of the caregiver is valued. Preference studies indicate positive WTP for additional hours of home care, health–social integration, and facilitated groups; evidence on WTA is scarcer and methodologically variable. Conclusions. Short, structured interventions with a human support component offer good value-for-money; the adoption of societal perspectives and the systematic use of WTP/WTA can better capture the value perceived by caregivers. Gender discrimination is a pervasive and multifaceted phenomenon rooted in cognitive, emotional, and social mechanisms that operate across individual, interpersonal, and structural levels. This umbrella review synthesizes systematic reviews and meta-analyses published between 2013 and 2024 examining the relationship between gender, stereotypes, and discrimination. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searches were conducted across PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science, yielding 22 eligible reviews after screening 684 records. Thematic synthesis identified two overarching domains: manifestations of discrimination and health and professional outcomes. Discrimination emerged as structural, interpersonal, and implicit, operating through institutional barriers, microaggressions, and stereotyping mechanisms. These dynamics were found to significantly affect mental health, and particularly anxiety, depression, and psychological distress, as well as physical health, including cardiovascular outcomes and maternal morbidity. Professional and social functioning were also impaired, with gender-based inequalities documented in pay, promotion, and role allocation across multiple occupational contexts. Despite consistent evidence of harm, the literature revealed limited consensus in conceptualization and a lack of longitudinal and intervention research. Collectively, findings underscore that gender discrimination constitutes both a public health concern and a systemic social mechanism that shapes individual cognition, emotion, and behaviour, demanding multi-level psychological and policy responses. Predicting energy consumption in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is a complex task due to the large number of influencing factors and their interdependencies. Nevertheless, reliable energy consumption estimation is essential to reduce range anxiety, facilitate route planning, manage charging infrastructure, and support more effective travel decisions that lower operational risks in transportation, thereby fostering wider BEV adoption. In this context, the present study examines the existing literature on methodologies for predicting BEV energy consumption through a systematic literature review (SLR) following the Denyer and Tranfield protocol and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The analysis covers modelling approaches, computational tools, model accuracy metrics, variable topology, sampling frequency and analysis period, modelling scale, and data sources. In addition, this review incorporates a structured assessment of the methodological quality of the included studies and a systematic evaluation of risk of bias, enabling a critical appraisal of the reliability and generalisability of reported findings. A comprehensive classification of modelling methodologies and variables is proposed, providing an integrative reference framework for future research. Overall, this study addresses existing research gaps, identifies current methodological limitations, and outlines directions for future work on BEV energy consumption prediction. Full article

The integration of omics technologies, including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and microbiomics, has transformed sports science, particularly soccer, by providing new opportunities to optimize player performance, reduce injury risk, and enhance recovery. This systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines and structured using the PICOS/PECOS framework. Comprehensive searches were performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to August 2025. Eligible studies were peer-reviewed original research involving professional or elite soccer players that applied at least one omics approach to outcomes related to performance, health, recovery, or injury prevention. Reviews, conference abstracts, editorials, and studies not involving soccer or omics technologies were excluded. A total of 139 studies met the inclusion criteria. Across the included studies, a total of 19,449 participants were analyzed. Genomic investigations identified numerous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) spanning key biological pathways. Cardiovascular and vascular genes (e.g., ACE, AGT, NOS3, VEGF, ADRA2A, ADRB1–3) were associated with endurance, cardiovascular regulation, and recovery. Genes related to muscle structure, metabolism, and hypertrophy (e.g., ACTN3, CKM, MLCK, TRIM63, TTN-AS1, HIF1A, MSTN, MCT1, AMPD1) were linked to sprint performance, metabolic efficiency, and muscle injury susceptibility. Neurotransmission-related genes (BDNF, COMT, DRD1–3, DBH, SLC6A4, HTR2A, APOE) influenced motivation, fatigue, cognitive performance, and brain injury recovery. Connective tissue and extracellular matrix genes (COL1A1, COL1A2, COL2A1, COL5A1, COL12A1, COL22A1, ELN, EMILIN1, TNC, MMP3, GEFT, LIF, HGF) were implicated in ligament, tendon, and muscle injury risk. Energy metabolism and mitochondrial function genes (PPARA, PPARG, PPARD, PPARGC1A, UCP1–3, FTO, TFAM) shaped endurance capacity, substrate utilization, and body composition. Oxidative stress and detoxification pathways (GSTM1, GSTP1, GSTT1, NRF2) influenced recovery and resilience, while bone-related variants (VDR, P2RX7, RANK/RANKL/OPG) were associated with bone density and remodeling. Beyond genomics, proteomics identified markers of muscle damage and repair, metabolomics characterized fatigue- and energy-related signatures, and microbiomics revealed links between gut microbial diversity, recovery, and physiological resilience. Evidence from omics research in soccer supports the potential for individualized approaches to training, nutrition, recovery, and injury prevention. By integrating genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and microbiomics data, clubs and sports practitioners may design precision strategies tailored to each player’s biological profile. Future research should expand on multi-omics integration, explore gene–environment interactions, and improve representation across sexes, age groups, and competitive levels to advance precision sports medicine in soccer. Background: Recalcitrant plantar fasciitis (RPF) is a common cause of chronic heel pain, resistant to conservative treatment in up to 10% of cases. A biomechanical association exists between isolated gastrocnemius contracture and increased tension on the plantar fascia. In this context, gastrocnemius recession (GR) has emerged as a surgical intervention aimed at reducing fascial strain and improving functional outcomes. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and registered with PROSPERO (CRD420251028862). Randomized controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of GR in patients with RPF were included. Searches were performed in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Risk of bias was assessed using the RoB 2 tool, and the certainty of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE approach. Primary outcomes included foot function (AOFAS), pain (VAS), and ankle dorsiflexion range (FDTPA). Results: Five studies encompassing 150 patients were included. Meta-analysis revealed statistically significant improvements in foot function (AOFAS, standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.81; 95% CI: 0.26–1.36), pain reduction (VAS, SMD = −1.17; 95% CI: −1.99 to −0.36), and ankle dorsiflexion (FDTPA, SMD = 0.74; 95% CI: 0.26–1.22). GR demonstrated advantages over plantar fasciotomy in terms of postoperative recovery and preservation of fascial structure. No major complications were reported, and some studies documented sustained benefits up to six years postoperatively. Moderate to high heterogeneity was observed, largely due to variations in surgical technique and follow-up durations. Conclusions: Gastrocnemius recession is a safe and effective surgical option for treating RPF, particularly in patients with isolated gastrocnemius contracture and failure of conservative therapies. It significantly improves foot function, reduces pain, and enhances ankle mobility, with durable long-term outcomes. Introduction: Low vision affects more than visual acuity; it substantially disrupts daily functioning and may contribute to long-term cognitive, emotional, and social consequences. When medical or surgical treatment options are no longer effective, structured low-vision rehabilitation becomes essential, providing strategies and tools that support functional adaptation and promote independence. This review aims to map the current outcomes of rehabilitation services, identify gaps in existing research, and highlight opportunities for further study. Methods: An article search was conducted via PubMed, Scopus, PsycInfo, and Google Scholar. Then, title, abstract, and full-text screenings for inclusion were performed by all the authors independently, and disagreements were resolved through discussion. The relevant outcomes from the eligible publications were extracted by four authors and then cross-checked by the other authors. The results are presented via the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis extension for Scoping Reviews checklist. Results: A total of 13 studies met the inclusion criteria. Most were randomized controlled trials (n = 10,77%), with the majority conducted in the United States and the United Kingdom. Study populations consisted of adults aged 18 years and older. Across the included studies, low-vision rehabilitation interventions particularly visual training, magnification-based programs, and multidisciplinary approaches, were associated with significant improvements in visual function, activities of daily living, and vision-related quality of life. Conclusions: Low vision rehabilitation interventions demonstrate clear benefits for visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, reading speed, and functional independence. However, substantial gaps remain, including limited evidence on long-term outcomes, inconsistent assessment of psychosocial influences, and underrepresentation of diverse populations. Standardized outcome measures and long-term, inclusive research designs are needed to better understand the sustained and equitable impact of low-vision rehabilitation. Full article

Background: Postoperative bone healing can be impaired by systemic factors and surgical trauma, leading to delayed recovery. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) has been proposed as a non-invasive method to enhance osteogenesis, but variability in protocols and outcomes limits its clinical use. Aim: To systematically review and synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating PBMT’s effectiveness in promoting postoperative osteogenesis. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Only RCTs comparing PBMT with sham treatment or standard care were included. Data on laser parameters, surgical indications, and outcomes such as bone regeneration, healing time, and implant stability were extracted. The risk of bias of the included randomized studies was evaluated using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 (RoB version 2) tool. Results: Twelve RCTs were included. PBMT consistently improved early soft tissue healing and reduced postoperative inflammation and edema. Some studies showed accelerated bone maturation, especially in grafted sockets and distraction osteogenesis, while others reported no significant long-term effects on implant stability or chronic lesion healing. Heterogeneity in laser parameters limited comparability. Conclusions: PBMT is a safe adjunct that reliably enhances early postoperative healing and may promote bone remodeling in selected cases. Standardized protocols and larger, high-quality RCTs are needed to confirm long-term benefits and optimize treatment parameters. Full article

Background/objectives: Metabolomics has emerged as a powerful systems-biology tool for deciphering dynamic metabolic alterations occurring during infectious diseases and following vaccination. While genomics and proteomics provide extensive molecular and regulatory information, metabolomics uniquely reflects the biochemical phenotype associated with infection, immune activation, and immunometabolic reprogramming. The objective of this review is to provide an integrated analysis of metabolomics applications across both neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and non-NTD pathogens, highlighting its dual role in biomarker discovery and vaccine response evaluation. Methods: A comprehensive literature-based synthesis was conducted to examine metabolomic studies in infectious diseases and vaccinology. Metabolic perturbations associated with specific pathogens, as well as vaccine-induced metabolic changes and correlates of immune responses, were systematically analyzed and compared across NTD and non-NTD contexts. Results: Distinct pathogen- and vaccine-associated metabolic signatures were identified, reflecting alterations in glycolysis, amino acid metabolism, lipid remodeling, and immunoregulatory pathways. Comparative analysis revealed both shared and disease-specific metabolic biomarkers across NTDs and non-NTD infections. Importantly, vaccine-related metabolic correlates were shown to mirror immune activation states and, in some cases, predict immunogenicity and response durability. Conclusions: This review bridges metabolomics research in infectious disease pathogenesis and vaccine immunology across the NTD and non-NTD spectrum. By integrating these domains, it introduces the concept of “metabolic immuno-signatures” as predictive and translational tools for evaluating vaccine efficacy and immune response outcomes. Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) are crucial for mitigating flood risks in vulnerable ecosystems, yet their effective application remains inconsistent. This study synthesises global literature to systematically map EIA methodologies, evaluate the extent of hydrological integration, and analyse the evolution of practices against policy frameworks for flood-prone areas. A scoping review of 144 peer-reviewed articles, conference papers, and one book chapter (2005–2025) was conducted using PRISMA protocols, complemented by bibliometric analysis. Quantitative findings reveal a significant gap where 72% of studies lacked specialised hydrological impact assessments (HIAs), with only 28% incorporating them. Post-2016, advanced tools like GIS, remote sensing, and hydrological modelling were used in less than 32% of studies, revealing reliance on outdated checklist methods. In South Africa, despite wetlands covering 7.7% of its territory, merely 12% of studies applied flood modelling. Furthermore, 40% of EIAs conducted after 2016 excluded climate adaptation strategies, undermining resilience. The literature is geographically skewed, with developed nations dominating publications at a 3:1 ratio over African contributions. The study’s novelty is its systematic global mapping of global EIA practices for flood-prone areas and its proposal for mandatory HIAs, predictive modelling, and strengthened policy enforcement. Practically, these reforms can transform EIAs from reactive compliance tools into proactive instruments for disaster risk reduction and climate resilience, directly supporting Sustainable Development Goals 11 (Sustainable Cities), 13 (Climate Action), and 15 (Life on Land). This is essential for guiding future policy and improving EIA efficacy in the face of rapid urbanisation and climate change. Full article

Background: Occlusal dysesthesia (OD), also known as phantom bite syndrome, is characterized by the subjective sensation of an uncomfortable or “wrong” bite despite the absence of objective occlusal pathology. This scoping review aimed to synthesize the current evidence on the epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of OD. Methods: The PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched using the terms “phantom bite,” “occlusal dysesthesia,” “occlusal hyperawareness,” “occlusal hypervigilance,” “uncomfortable occlusion,” and “oral cenestopathy.” Studies were screened according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses criteria (2020), and evidence quality was assessed using the Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine levels of evidence. Results: A total of 20 studies were included. OD predominantly affected middle-aged women, with symptom durations often exceeding several years, and was believed to be caused by disorderly central sensory processing or maladaptive signal processing rather than by a primary occlusal abnormality, with high rates of psychiatric comorbidities reported. Current evidence supports conservative multidisciplinary management, including patient education, cognitive behavioral therapy, and supportive pharmacotherapy, and irreversible dental interventions are contraindicated. Conclusions: OD is a complex biopsychosocial condition requiring multidisciplinary care. The current low-quality evidence is primarily obtained from case reports and case series. Therefore, high-quality controlled trials are urgently required to establish evidence-based diagnostic criteria and treatment protocols. Full article
