Rapid pavement repair demands materials that combine accelerated strength gains, dimensional stability, long-term durability, and sustainability. However, finding materials or formulations that offer these balances remains a critical challenge. This study systematically evaluates two polymer-modified belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) concretes—CSAP (powdered polymer) and CSA-LLP (liquid polymer admixture)—against a traditional Type III Portland cement (OPC) control under both laboratory and realistic outdoor conditions. Laboratory specimens were tested for fresh properties, early-age and later-age compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strengths, as well as drying shrinkage according to ASTM standards. Outdoor 5 × 4 × 12-inch slabs mimicking typical jointed plain concrete panels (JPCPs), instrumented with vibrating wire strain gauges and thermocouples, recorded the strain and temperature at 5 min intervals over 16 weeks, with 24 h wet-burlap curing to replicate field practices. Laboratory findings show that CSA mixes exceeded 3200 psi of compressive strength at 4 h, but cold outdoor casting (~48 °F) delayed the early-age strength development. The CSA-LLP exhibited the lowest drying shrinkage (0.036% at 16 weeks), and outdoor CSA slabs captured the initial ettringite-driven expansion, resulting in a net expansion (+200 µε) rather than contraction. Approximately 80% of the total strain evolved within the first 48 h, driven by autogenous and plastic effects. CSA mixes generated lower peak internal temperatures and reduced thermal strain amplitudes compared to the OPC, improving dimensional stability and mitigating restraint-induced cracking. These results underscore the necessity of field validation for shrinkage compensation mechanisms and highlight the critical roles of the polymer type and curing protocol in optimizing CSA-based repairs for durable, low-carbon pavement rehabilitation. This paper presents a comprehensive review of dealuminated metakaolin (DK), a hazardous industrial by-product generated by the aluminium sulphate (alum) industry and evaluates its potential as a component in cementitious systems for the partial or full replacement of Portland cement (PC). Positioned within the context of waste valorisation in concrete, the review aims to establish a critical understanding of DK formation, properties, and reactivity, particularly its pozzolanic potential, to assess its suitability for use as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), or as a precursor in alkali-activated cement (AAC) systems for concrete. A systematic methodology is used to extract and synthesise relevant data from existing literature concerning DK and its potential applications in cement and concrete. The collected information is organised into thematic sections exploring key aspects of DK, beginning with its formation from kaolinite ores, followed by studies on its pozzolanic reactivity. Applications of DK are then reviewed, focusing on its integration into SCMs and alkali-activated cement (AAC) systems. The review consolidates existing knowledge related to DK, identifying scientific gaps and practical challenges that limit its broader adoption for cement and concrete applications, and outlines future research directions to provide a solid foundation for future studies. Overall, this review highlights the potential of DK as a low-carbon, circular-economy material and promotes its integration into efforts to enhance the sustainability of construction practices. The findings aim to support researchers’ and industry stakeholders’ strategies to reduce cement clinker content and mitigate the environmental footprint of concrete in a circular-economy context. The following investigation presents concrete cement obtained with the Viterbo O’Reilly Diaz method, introduced to quantify the concrete mixture by using an aggregate gradation method. This research uses this procedure to decrease the amount of cement in the mix, thus reducing the CO2 footprint and production costs, which directly impact the environmental and economical sustainability of the material. The formulations used structural and general use Portland cements. As aggregates, fine sand and 3/4” gravel were included. Several characterization techniques were used, including granulometry testing for the aggregates, compression strength testing for the concrete samples, and granulometry testing for the raw materials. Compressive tests were conducted on samples after 28 days of curing, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to understand the microstructure. The results revealed the optimal amounts of water, cement, and aggregates. Combinations of fine and coarse aggregates were determined as well. The main novelty in this manuscript is the use of the Viterbo O’Reilly mix design method to innovatively enhance concrete mixes by analyzing material properties and behavior in detail, an unexplored method in the literature. This research considers not only strength but also durability and workability, using mathematical tools for data analysis. This data-driven approach ensures effective aggregate gradation towards sustainability when compared to other traditional methods. Full article

This paper evaluates the synergistic effect of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers and nanosilica (nS) on the mechanical behavior and deformation properties of engineered cementitious composites (ECCs). ECCs have gained a reputation for high ductility, crack control, and strain-hardening behavior. Nevertheless, the next step is to improve their performance even more through nano-modification and fine-tuning of fiber dosage—one of the major research directions. In the experiment, six types of ECC mixtures were made by maintaining constant PVA fiber content (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0%), while the nanosilica contents were varied (0, 1, 2, 3, and 5%). Stress–strain tests carried out in the form of compression, together with unrestrained shrinkage measurement, were conducted to test strength, strain capacity, and resistance to deformation, which was highest at 80 MPa, recorded in the concrete with 2% nS and 0.5% PVA. On the other hand, the mixture of 1.5% PVA and 3% nS had the highest strain result of 2750 µm/m, which indicates higher ductility. This is seen to be influenced by refined microstructures, improved fiber dispersion, and better fiber–matrix interfacial bonding through nS. In addition to these mechanical modifications, the use of nanosilica, obtained from industrial byproducts, provided the possibility to partially replace Portland cement, resulting in a decrease in the amount of CO2 emissions. In addition, the enhanced crack resistance implies higher durability and reduced long-term maintenance. Such results demonstrate that optimized ECC compositions, including nS and PVA, offer high performance in terms of strength and flexibility as well as contribute to the sustainability goals—features that will define future eco-efficient infrastructure. Quality requirements for mineral aggregate for concrete used to construct pavement for busy highways are high because of the fatigue traffic loads and environmental exposure. The use of local aggregate for infrastructure projects could result in important sustainability improvements, provided that the concrete’s durability is assured. The objective of this study was to identify the potential alkaline reactivity of local greywacke aggregate and select appropriate mitigation measures against the alkali–silica reaction. Experimental tests on concrete specimens were performed using the miniature concrete prism test at 60 °C. Mixtures of coarse greywacke aggregate up to 12.5 mm with natural fine aggregate of different potential reactivity were evaluated in respect to the expansion, compressive strength, and elastic modulus of the concrete. Two preventive measures were studied—the use of metakaolin and slag-blended cement. A moderate reactivity potential of the greywacke aggregate was found, and the influence of reactive quartz sand on the expansion and instability of the mechanical properties of concrete was evaluated. Both crystalline and amorphous alkali–silica reaction products were detected in the cracks of the greywacke aggregate. Efficient expansion mitigation was obtained for the replacement of 15% of Portland cement by metakaolin or the use of CEM III/A cement with the slag content of 52%, even if greywacke aggregate was blended with moderately reactive quartz sand. It resulted in a relative reduction in expansion by 85–96%. The elastic modulus deterioration was less than 10%, confirming an increased stability of the elastic properties of concrete. Full article

The increasing demand for sustainable construction materials has driven research into low-carbon geopolymers that mitigate both cement-related emissions and plastic and glass waste accumulation. This study explores the development of geopolymer concrete incorporating fly ash (FA), slag (S), and FA + S blends, with 10% recycled crushed glass (RCG) and recycled plastic waste (RPW) as partial coarse aggregate replacements. Compressive strength testing revealed that FA + S-based geopolymers (25FA + S) with 100% ordinary Portland cement (OPC) replacement achieved a 7-day strength of 24.6 MPa, representing a 98% improvement over control specimens. Slag-based geopolymers demonstrated water absorption properties comparable to OPC, indicating enhanced durability. Microstructural analyses using SEM, XRD, and EDS confirmed the formation of a dense aluminosilicate matrix, with slag promoting FA reactivity and reinforcing interfacial transition zone (ITZ). These effects contributed to superior mechanical performance and water resistance. Despite minor shrinkage-induced cracking, full OPC replacement with S or FA + S geopolymers outperformed control specimens, consistently exceeding the target strength of 15 MPa required for low-impact, single-story housing applications within seven days. These findings underscore the potential of geopolymer systems for rapid and sustainable construction, offering an effective solution for reducing carbon footprints and repurposing industrial waste. The construction of concrete pavements has increased due to their better durability, lifespan, and lower maintenance costs. However, this has resulted in the increased consumption of Portland cement, which is one of the major contributors to carbon emissions. Consequently, the research on alternative binders such as geopolymer concrete has increased in recent times. There are several research studies that investigate the feasibility of geopolymer concrete as a construction material, with limited studies exploring its application in concrete pavements. Therefore, this review study explores the material properties of geopolymer concrete pertinent to the performance of concrete pavements. It also discusses the potential of various industrial and agricultural waste as precursor material in geopolymer concrete. The findings of this paper show that most of the studies used fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) as precursor material in geopolymer pavement-quality concrete, and there is a vast scope in the exploration of other industrial and agricultural waste as precursor material. The mechanical and durability properties of geopolymer pavement-quality concrete are superior to conventional pavement concrete. It is also observed that the drying shrinkage and coefficient of thermal expansion of geopolymer pavement-quality concrete are lower than those of conventional pavement concrete, and this will positively benefit the long-term performance of concrete pavements. The results of fatigue analysis and mechanical load test on the geopolymer pavement-quality concrete indicate its improved performance when compared to the conventional pavement concrete. This study investigates the effects of incorporating recycled concrete powder (RCP) as a supplementary cementitious material in Portland cement composites at replacement levels of 5–30% by weight. A comprehensive characterization using isothermal calorimetry, electrical conductivity measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy revealed that RCP modified the hydration behavior and microstructural development. The results showed a linear 16.5% reduction in the total heat of hydration (from 145.38 to 121.44 J/g) at 30% RCP content, accompanied by a 26.5% decrease in peak electrical conductivity (19.16 to 14.08 mS/cm) and delayed reaction kinetics. Thermal analysis demonstrated an increased stability of hydration products, with portlandite decomposition temperatures rising by up to 10.8 °C. Microstructural observations confirmed the formation of denser but more amorphous C–S–H phases alongside increased interfacial porosity at higher RCP contents. The study provides quantitative evidence of RCP’s dual functionality as both an inert filler and a nucleation agent, identifying an optimal 20–25% replacement range that balances performance and sustainability. These findings advance the understanding of construction waste utilization in cementitious materials and provide practical solutions for developing more sustainable building composites while addressing circular economy objectives in the construction sector. In this study, the thermal effectiveness of thermally conductive concrete pavements (TCPs) using silicon carbide (SiC) as a fine aggregate replacement was investigated, compared with that of ordinary Portland cement pavements (OPCPs). The most important purpose of this study is to improve the thermal performance of concrete pavement. Additionally, this study utilized improved thermal properties to enhance the efficiency of pavement heating to prevent icing and snow stacking. Both mixtures met the Korean standards for air content (4.5–6%) and slump (80–150 mm), demonstrating adequate workability. TCP exhibited a higher mechanical performance, with average compressive and flexural strengths of 42.88 MPa and 7.35 MPa, respectively, exceeding the required targets of a 30 MPa compressive strength and a 4.5 MPa flexural strength. The improved strength was mainly attributed to the filler effect and partly due to the van der Waals interactions of the SiC particles. Thermal conductivity tests showed a significant improvement in the TCP (3.20 W/mK), which was approximately twice that of OPCP (1.59 W/mK), indicating an enhanced heat transfer efficiency. In winter field tests, TCP effectively maintained high surface temperatures, overcoming heat loss and outperforming the OPCP. In the site experiment, thermal efficiency was clearly shown in the temperature at the center of the TCP, which was 3.5 °C higher than at the center of the OPCP at the coldest time. These improvements suggest that SiC-reinforced concrete pavements can be practically utilized for effective snow removal and ice mitigation in road systems. Full article

Optimized Design of Low-Carbon Fly Ash–Slag Composite Concrete Considering Carbonation Durability and CO2 Concentration Rising Impacts

Fly ash and slag are widely used as mineral admixtures to partially replace cement in low-carbon concrete. However, such composite concretes often exhibit a greater carbonation depth than plain Portland concrete with the same 28-day strength, increasing the risk of steel reinforcement corrosion. Previous mix design methods have overlooked this issue. This study proposes an optimized design method for fly ash–slag composite concrete, considering carbonation exposure classes and CO2 concentrations. Four exposure classes are addressed—XC1 (completely dry or permanently wet environments such as indoor floors or submerged concrete), XC2 (wet but rarely dry, e.g., inside water tanks), XC3 (moderate humidity, e.g., sheltered outdoor environments), and XC4 (cyclic wet and dry, e.g., bridge decks and exterior walls exposed to rain). Two CO2 levels—0.04% (ambient) and 0.05% (elevated)—were also considered. In Scenario 1 (no durability constraint), the optimized designs for all exposure classes were identical, with 60% slag and 75% total fly ash–slag replacement. In Scenario 2 (0.04% CO2 with durability), the designs for XC1 and XC2 remained the same, but for XC3 and XC4, the carbonation depth became the controlling factor, requiring a higher binder content and leading to compressive strengths exceeding the target. In Scenario 3 (0.05% CO2), despite the increased carbonation depth, the XC1 and XC2 designs were unchanged. However, XC3 and XC4 required further increases in binder content and actual strength to meet durability limits. Overall, compressive strength governs the design for XC1 and XC2, while carbonation durability is critical for XC3 and XC4. Increasing the water-to-binder ratio reduces strength, while higher-strength mixes emit more CO2 per cubic meter, confirming the proposed method’s engineering validity. Full article

This research evaluates the mechanical properties, environmental impacts, and cost-effectiveness of Hub Coal fly ash (FA)-based geopolymer concrete (FAGPC) as a sustainable alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete. This local FA has not been investigated previously. A total of 24 FAGPC mixes were tested under both ambient and heat curing conditions, varying the molarities of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution (10-M, 12-M 14-M and 16-M), sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide (Na2SiO3/NaOH) ratios (1.5, 2.0, and 2.5), and alkaline activator solution to fly ash (AAS/FA) ratios (0.5 and 0.6). The test results demonstrated that increasing NaOH molarity enhances the compressive strength (CS.) by 145% under ambient curing, with a peak CS. of 32.8 MPa at 16-M NaOH, and similarly, flexural strength (FS.) increases by 90% with a maximum FS. of 6.5 MPa at 14-M NaOH. Conversely, increasing the Na2SiO3/NaOH ratio to 2.5 reduced the CS. and FS. of ambient-cured specimens by 12.5% and 10.5%, respectively. Microstructural analysis revealed that higher NaOH molarity produced a denser, more homogeneous matrix, supported by increased Si–O–Al bond formation observed through energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Environmentally, FAGPC demonstrated a 35–40% reduction in embodied CO2 emissions compared to OPC, although the production costs of FAGPC were 30–35% higher, largely due to the expense of alkaline activators. These findings highlight the potential of FAGPC as a low-carbon alternative to OPC concrete, balancing enhanced mechanical performance with sustainability. New, green, and cheap activation solutions are sought for a new generation of more sustainable and affordable FAGPC. Full article

Abstract
Electrochemical treatment by means of direct current (DC) is usually used as a measure for steel rebar corrosion protection, e.g., cathodic protection (CP), electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE), and re-alkalization (RA). Electrochemical treatment by means of direct current (DC) is usually used as a measure for steel rebar corrosion protection, e.g., cathodic protection (CP), electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE), and re-alkalization (RA). However, the passage of an electrical charge through the pore system of concrete or mortar, coupled with the migration of ions, concentration changes, and resulting phase changes, may alter its chloride penetration resistance and, subsequently, the time until rebar corrosion activation. Porosity changes in hardened Portland cement mortar were studied by means of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and alterations in the mortar surface phase composition were observed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD). In order to innovatively investigate the impact of DC treatment on the properties of the mortar–electrolyte interface, the cathode-facing mortar surface and the anode-facing mortar surface were analyzed separately. The corrosion of steel coupons embedded in DC-treated hardened mortar was monitored by means of the free corrosion potential (Eoc) and polarization resistance (Rp). The results showed that the DC treatment affected the surface porosity of the hardened Portland cement mortar at the nanoscale. Up to two-thirds of the small pores (0.001–0.01 µm) were replaced by medium-sized pores (0.01–0.06 µm), which may be significant for chloride ingress. Although the porosity and phase composition alterations were confirmed using other techniques (EIS and XRD), corrosion tests revealed that they did not significantly affect the time until the corrosion activation of the steel coupons in the mortar. Geopolymers (GPs), as promising alternatives to ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based concrete, have gained interest in the last 20 years due to their enhanced mechanical properties, durability, and lower environmental impact. Synthesized from industrial by-products such as slag and fly ash, geopolymers offer a sustainable solution to waste management, resource utilization, and carbon dioxide reduction. However, similarly to OPC, geopolymers exhibit brittle behavior, and this characteristic defines a limit for structural applications. To tackle this issue, researchers have focused on the characterization, development, and implementation of fiber-reinforced geopolymers (FRGs), which incorporate various fibers to enhance toughness, ductility, and crack resistance, allowing their use in a wide range of structural applications. Following a general overview of sustainability considerations, this review critically analyzes the structural performance and capability of geopolymers in structural repair applications. Geopolymers demonstrate notable potential in new construction and repair applications. However, challenges such as complex mix designs, the availability of alkaline activators, curing temperatures, fiber matrix compatibility issues, and limited standards are restricting its large-scale adoption. The analysis and consolidation of an extensive dataset would support the viability of geopolymer as a durable and sustainable alternative to what is currently used in the construction industry, especially when fiber reinforcement is effectively integrated. Cement production significantly contributes to CO2 emissions (8% of worldwide CO2 emissions) and global warming, accelerating climate change and increasing air pollution, which harms ecosystems and human health. To this end, this research investigates the fresh and hardened properties of sustainable concrete fabricated with three different replacement percentages (0%, 5%, and 10% by weight) of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) using rice husk ash (RHA). The hardened properties were evaluated at 14, 28, 60, 90, and 120 days of water curing. In addition, data-based models were developed, validated, and optimised, and the models were compared with experimental results and validated with the literature findings. The outcomes reveal that the slump values increased (17% higher) with the increased content of RHA, which aligns with the lower temperatures (12% lower) of freshly mixed concrete with RHA than the control mix (100% OPC). The slopes of the stress–strain profiles decreased at early ages and improved at longer curing ages (more than 28 days), especially for mixes with 5% RHA. The compressive strength decreased slightly (18% at 28 days) with increased percentages of RHA, which was minimised with increased curing ages (8% at 90 days). The data-based model accurately predicted the stress–strain profiles (coefficient of determination, R2 ≈ 0.9950–0.9993) and compressive strength at each curing age, including crack progression (i.e., highly nonlinear region) and validates its effectiveness. In contrast, the optimisation model shows excellent results, mirroring the experimental data throughout the profile. These outcomes indicate that the 10% RHA could potentially replace OPC due to its lower reduction in strength (8% at 90 days), which in turn lowers CO2 emissions and promotes sustainability. Study on the Sustainability of Carbon Emission Reduction in China’s Cement Industry

Recycled concrete fines (RCFs) have the potential to serve as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) after carbonation. Traditionally, carbonation of RCFs results in calcium carbonate primarily in the form of calcite, which significantly limits the development of RCFs as an SCM. In this research, a wet grinding carbonation (WGC) technique was introduced to enhance the reactivity of RCFs. The research indicates that RCFs after WGC exhibit a finer particle size and a larger specific surface area. The carbonation products include calcite with smaller grains, metastable calcium carbonate, and nanoscale silica gel and Al-Si gel. When RCF-WGC is used as an SCM in ordinary Portland cement (OPC), it significantly promotes the hydration of the cement paste, as evidenced by the advancement and increased intensity of the exothermic peaks of aluminates and silicates. RCF-WGC can significantly enhance the compressive strength of hydrated samples, particularly at early ages. Specifically, at a curing age of 1 day, the compressive strength of WGC5, WGC10, and WGC20 samples increased by 9.9%, 22.5%, and 7.7%, respectively, compared to the Ref sample (0% RCF-WGC). At a curing age of 3 days, the compressive strength of the WGC5, WGC10, and WGC20 samples showed even more significant improvements, increasing by 20.8%, 21.9%, and 11.8%, respectively. The performance enhancement of the WGC samples is attributed to the chemical reactions involving nanoscale silica gel, Al-Si gel, and calcium carbonate in the RCFs. When RCF-WGC is used as an SCM to replace 5%, 10%, and 20% of cement, it can reduce carbon emissions by 27.5 kg/t, 55 kg/t, and 110 kg/t, respectively. Large-scale application of RCFs as a high-value SCM can significantly reduce the life-cycle carbon emissions of the cement industry, contributing to the achievement of carbon peaking in China’s cement sector.
