The Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (POEMMA) is a proposed dual-satellite mission to observe Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs), increase the statistics at the highest energies, and observe Very-High-Energy Neutrinos (VHENs) following multi-messenger alerts of astrophysical transient events, such as gamma-ray bursts and gravitational wave events, throughout the universe. POEMMA–Balloon with radio (PBR) is a small-scale version of the POEMMA design, adapted to be flown as a payload on one of NASA’s suborbital Super Pressure Balloons (SPBs) circling over the Southern Ocean for more than 20 days after a launch from Wanaka, New Zealand. The main science objectives of PBR are: (1) to observe UHECRs via the fluorescence technique from suborbital space; (2) to observe horizontal high-altitude air showers (HAHAs) with energies above the cosmic ray knee (E > 3PeV) using optical and radio detection for the first time; and (3) to follow astrophysical event alerts in the search of VHENs. The PBR instrument consists of a 1.1 m aperture Schmidt telescope similar to the POEMMA design, with two cameras on its focal surface: a Fluorescence Camera (FC) and a Cherenkov Camera (CC). In addition, PBR has a Radio Instrument (RI) optimized for detecting EASs (covering the 60–660 Mhz range). The FC observes UHECR-induced EASs in the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum using an array of 9216-pixel Multi-Anode Photo-Multiplier Tubes (MAPMTs) imaged every 1 μs. The CC uses a 2048-pixel Silicon Photo-Multiplier (SiPM) imager to observe cosmic-ray-induced HAHAs and search for neutrino-induced upward-going EASs. The CC covers a spectral range of 320–900 nm, with an integration time of 10 ns. This contribution provides an overview of PBR instruments and their current status. Full article

Plants secrete a heterogenous population of membrane-enclosed extracellular vesicles that harbour an incredible diversity of molecular cargo. It is the complexity of the molecular cargo encapsulated by plant extracellular vesicles (PEVs) which facilitates the fundamental role PEVs play in mediating communication and signalling. PEV molecular cargo is composed of a diverse mixture of lipids, metabolites, proteins, and nucleic acids. Among the nucleic acids, the microRNA (miRNA) class of small regulatory RNA can be viewed as one of the most biologically relevant. Plant miRNAs regulate the expression of genes essential for all aspects of development as well as to control the gene expression changes required to drive the adaptive and defensive responses of plants to environmental stress and pathogen attack. Furthermore, recent research has shown that specific miRNA cohorts are selectively packaged into PEVs as part of the molecular-level response of a plant to its growth environment. For example, PEVs are loaded with a specific miRNA population for their targeted delivery to sites of pathogen infection in the host plant, or for cross-kingdom delivery of host-plant-encoded miRNAs to the pathogen itself. Here we outline PEV physical properties, compare PEV biogenesis pathways, detail the composition of PEV molecular cargo, and go on to provide detailed commentary on the role of PEV-delivered miRNAs in plant development, environmental stress adaptation, and pathogen defence. We conclude this article with a proposal for the potential future use of PEVs and their miRNA cargo in agriculture and aquaculture. Full article

Plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PEVs) have emerged as a promising area of research in biotechnology with enormous potential in drug delivery, skincare, and functional foods. Currently, PEVs are obtained primarily from fresh and dried materials through soaking and extraction; however, little is known about the differences in their contents. Using Portulaca oleracea L. as the research object, this study firstly employed a method that combined differential and ultracentrifugation with membrane filtration to separate and purify exosome-like nanoparticles from dried material (D-PELNs) and fresh material (F-PELNs). Then, multi-omics analysis compared the small-molecule metabolites, lipid profiles, and protein expression patterns. Both D-PELNs and F-PELNs showed typical cup-shaped morphology, with mean particle sizes of 139 nm and 186 nm, and mean zeta potentials of −16.015 ± 0.335 mV and −6.29 ± 0.19 mV, respectively. Both types contained diverse small-molecule metabolites. Among them, terpenoids (e.g., caesaldekarin e) were more abundant in F-PELNs, whereas carboxylic acids and their derivatives (e.g., citric acid) were predominantly found in D-PELNs. Both types had abundant lipids. D-PELNs exhibited greater lipid diversity than F-PELNs, with notable enrichment in phosphatidylcholine (18.48%) and ceramide (17.02%). F-PELNs mainly consisted of functional neutral lipids, such as monoglycerides and triglycerides. Proteins involved in plant morphogenesis and secondary-metabolite biosynthesis were also identified. Proteins from both Portulaca oleracea L.-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (PELNs) were localized to intracellular structures, including the cytoplasm and mitochondria of the cells. D-PELNs had a higher protein content related to carbon metabolism, whereas F-PELNs were more enriched in proteins related to secondary metabolite synthesis. In summary, D-PELNs and F-PELNs were successfully isolated and characterized, and their compositions were analyzed and compared using multi-omics approaches. These findings identify the specific chemical components of PELNs and offer new insights for comparing the compositional differences between exosome-like nanoparticles derived from dried and fresh plant states. The growing integration of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) into microgrids presents both challenges and opportunities, particularly through vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services. This paper proposes a dynamic horizon optimization (DHO) framework with adaptive pricing for real-time scheduling of PEVs in a renewable-powered microgrid. The system integrates solar and wind energy, V2G capabilities, and time-of-use (ToU) tariffs. The DHO strategy dynamically adjusts control horizons based on forecasted load, generation, and electricity prices, while considering battery health. A PEV-specific pricing scheme couples ToU tariffs with system marginal prices. Case studies on a microgrid with four heterogeneous EV charging stations show that the proposed method reduces peak load by 23.5%, lowers charging cost by 12.6%, and increases average final SoC by 12.5%. Additionally, it achieves a 6.2% reduction in carbon emissions and enables V2G revenue while considering battery longevity. Full article

Ovarian cancer (OC) is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage, contributing to its high mortality rate. The presence of concurrent bacterial infections in these patients is a common clinical observation, and the mechanisms by which this coinfection influences tumor progression are still not fully understood. This study investigates the role of polydisperse extracellular vesicles (PEVs) secreted by OC cells in response to bacterial components, aiming to elucidate a potential communication pathway between OC and the bacterial microenvironment. We stimulated a human OC cell line in vitro with a fraction of E. coli. Our results show that this bacterial stimulation significantly increases the secretion of PEVs by cancer cells. A subsequent proteomic analysis of these PEVs revealed an enrichment of proteins, including filamin A, filamin B, alpha-enolase, and heat shock cognate 71 kDa protein. In addition, the PEVs displayed protease activity (on fibronectin and gelatin) and phosphatase activity against para-nitrophenyl phosphate, indicating their capacity to alter cellular signaling. This represents a novel mechanism through which bacterial coinfection may influence the biological behavior of OC if bacteria interact with tumor cells, potentially contributing to their aggressiveness and the challenges associated with their treatment. Our work highlights the importance of studying the interplay between the tumor and its associated microbiota to better understand ovarian cancer progression and identify new therapeutic targets. The MoonRay project is carrying out a concept study of a permanent lunar cosmic-ray (CR) and gamma-ray observatory, in view of the implementation of habitats on our satellite. The idea is to build a modular telescope that will be able to overcome the limitations, in available power and weight, of the present generation of CR instruments in Low Earth Orbit, while carrying out high-energy gamma-ray observations from a vantage point at the South Pole of the Moon. An array of fully independent modules (towers), with limited individual size and mass, can provide an acceptance more than one order of magnitude larger than instruments in flight at present. The modular telescope is designed to be deployed progressively, during a series of lunar missions, while collecting meaningful scientific data at the intermediate stages of its implementation. The operational power will be made available by the facilities maintaining the lunar habitats. With a geometric factor close to 15 m2sr and about 8 times larger sensitive area than FERMI-LAT, MoonRay will be able to carry out a very rich observational program over a time span of a few decades with an energy reach of 10 PeV allowing the exploration of the CR “knee” and the observation of the Southern Sky with gamma rays well into the TeV scale. Each tower (of approximate size 20 cm × 20 cm ×100 cm) is equipped with three instruments. A combined Charge and Time-of-Flight detector (CD-ToF) can identify individual cosmic elements, leveraging on an innovative two-layered array of pixelated Low-Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) sensors, with sub-ns time resolution. The latter can achieve an unprecedented rejection power against backscattered radiation from the calorimeter. It is followed by a tracker, providing also photon conversion, and by a thick crystal calorimeter (55 radiation lengths, 3 proton interaction lengths at normal incidence) with an energy resolution of 30–40% (1–2%) for protons (electrons) and a proton/electron rejection in excess of 105. A time resolution close to 100 ps has been obtained, with prototypal arrays of 3 mm × 3 mm LGAD pixels, in a recent test campaign carried out at CERN with Pb beam fragments. Full article

After a just tribute to Guido Barbiellini, we show how the notion of a maximum force (Fmax=c4/4G3×1043 Newtons) present on the event horizon of a black hole (BH) can be used in conjunction with the Wilson area rule to obtain the surface confinement of the mass of a BH analogous to the surface confinement of quarks. This is then translated into the central result of the paper that PeV scale protons exist on the surface of the Kerr BH residing at our galactic center, a result in complete agreement with the HAWC Collaboration result of a Pevatron at the galactic center. We conjecture that the supermassive BHs present at the center of most galaxies are not born out of a galactic collapse but that they must have been present since the formation of their hosting galaxy. This study investigates how university students adopt large language models (LLMs) for online consumption of sustainable products, integrating perceived value theory with the technology acceptance model (TAM). Cross-sectional survey data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) and artificial neural networks (ANNs). SEM results reveal partial mediation. Performance expectancy value (PEV) and information quality value (IQV) directly shape continue using intention (CUI). They also influence CUI indirectly through perceived ease of use (PEU) and perceived usefulness (PU). Green self-identity value (GSV) influences CUI both directly and via PEU, while trust transfer value (TTV) and green perceived value (GPV) affect CUI only via PEU. ANN findings confirm this hierarchy, as PU (86.7%) and PEU (85.7%) are the strongest predictors of CUI, followed by GSV (73.7%). Convergent evidence from both methods indicates that instrumental utility, effortless interaction, and sustainability identity congruence drive sustained LLM use in the context of online consumption of green products, whereas credibility cues and sustainability incentives play secondary roles. This study extends TAM by incorporating multidimensional value constructs and offers design recommendations for engaging and high-utility AI shopping platforms. Full article

This study examines how memorable tourism experiences (MTEs) influence tourists’ intention to recommend coastal tourism destinations. Using a quantitative approach of PLS-SEM analysis and a disjoint two-stage approach, this study examines MTE as a higher-order construct (HOC) with its seven dimensions and the moderating role of coastal destination competitiveness (CDC) in structural relationships. Data were collected through purposive sampling from 339 tourists who had visited Likupang, one of the priority tourism destinations in Indonesia. The results show that MTE plays a crucial role in increasing perceived economic value (PEV) and place attachment (PLA), and it is directly related to the intention to recommend the destination (ITRD). In addition to the prominent mediation role of PEV, these findings reveal that the CDC can strengthen or weaken the influence of these factors on tourists’ intention to provide recommendations. Specifically, the CDC can strengthen PLA influence towards intention to recommend, whereas, in contrast, it weakens the PEV in driving these intentions. The findings of this study expand the horizon of managing coastal tourism with an understanding of tourist behavior, particularly through a focus on improving MTE from the dynamics of its seven dimensions in encouraging promotion through tourist recommendations while optimizing the natural competitiveness elements of Likupang. This study reports a successful selective waste collection initiative led by UFSC’s Araranguá campus in a municipality without a recycling system. The initiative, named “Recicla UFSC Ara”, was structured around three main components: (i) the installation of color-coded bins for recyclable waste (including paper, plastic, metals, and polystyrene) and non-recyclable waste in indoor and common areas; (ii) the establishment of a Voluntary Delivery Point (PEV) to gather specific recyclable materials, such as glass, electronics waste, plastic bottles, writing instruments, and bottle caps; and (iii) the execution of periodic educational community-focused campaigns aimed at encouraging participation from both the university and the broader local community. Recyclables were manually sorted and weighed during regular collection rounds, and contamination rates were calculated. Quantitative data collected from 2022 to 2025 were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA to assess waste generation and contamination trends. Gathered recyclables were directed to appropriate partner institutions, including local “Ecoponto”, non-profit organizations, and corporate recycling programs. The study also conducted a literature review of similar university-led waste management programs to identify standard practices and regional specificities, providing a comparative analysis that highlights both shared elements and distinctive contributions of the UFSC model. Results demonstrate a significant volume of waste diverted from landfills and a gradual improvement in waste disposal practices among the university community. Targeted communication and operational changes mitigated key challenges, improper disposal, and logistical issues. This case underscores the role of universities as agents of environmental education and local sustainable development. Full article

In the context of emergency management, individual or household decisions to engage in risk mitigation behaviors are widely recognized to be influenced by a benefit–cost perception (perceived applied value (PAV) vs. perceived economic value (PEV), respectively). To better understand how such decisions are made, we conducted a mail survey (N = 211) of households living in the Red River of the North Basin, North Dakota, in 2018. The survey is aimed at understanding the overall experience of households with flooding and their behavior toward advanced protective strategies against future floods by analyzing household PEV—their willingness to pay for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Satellite Enhanced Snowmelt Flood Prediction system. This paper presents a mediation model in which various predictors (flood risk, experience, flood knowledge, flood risk perception, flood preparedness, flood mitigation, and flood insurance) are analyzed in relation to the PAV of the new Satellite Enhanced Snowmelt Flood Predictions in the Red River of the North Basin, which, in turn, may shape the PEV of this product. We discuss the potential implications for both the emergency management research community and professionals regarding the application of advanced risk mitigation technologies to help protect and sustain communities across the country from floods and other natural disasters. This paper provides a greater understanding of the economic and social aspects of sustainability in the context of emergency management and community development. Full article

Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs), composed of protons and atomic nuclei, are accelerated in sources such as supernova remnants and pulsar wind nebulae, reaching energies up to the PeV range. As they propagate through the interstellar medium, their interactions with dense regions like molecular clouds produce secondary particles, including gamma-rays and neutrinos. In this study, we use the Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit to simulate secondary particle production from GCR interactions within the Perseus molecular cloud, a nearby star-forming region. Our model incorporates realistic cloud composition, a wide range of incidence angles, and both hadronic and electromagnetic processes across a broad energy spectrum. The results highlight molecular clouds as significant sites of multi-messenger emissions and contribute to understanding the propagation of GCRs and the origin of diffuse gamma-ray and neutrino backgrounds in the Galaxy. Lorentz invariance is such a basic principle in fundamental physics that it must be constantly tested and any proposal of its violation and breakdown of CPT symmetry that might characterize some approaches to quantum gravity should be treated with care. In this review, we examine, among other scenarios, such instances in supercritical (Liouville) string theory, particularly in some brane models for “quantum foam”. Using the phenomenological formalism introduced here, we analyze the observational hints of Lorentz violation in time-of-flight lags of cosmic photons and neutrinos which fit excellently stringy space–time foam scenarios. We further demonstrate how stringent constraints from other astrophysical data, including the recent first detections of multi-TeV events in γ-ray burst 221009A and PeV cosmic photons by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), are satisfied in this context. Such models thus provide a unified framework for all currently observed phenomenologies of space–time symmetry breaking at Planckian scales. Full article

Extracellular Vesicles Profile and Risk of Venous Thromboembolism in Patients with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma

Thrombosis is a common complication in cancer patients, with a substantial impact on morbidity and mortality. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and other aggressive lymphomas carry a high venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have gained attention in recent research as a new potential biomarker for VTE development. To determine the profile and association of EVs with VTE in patients with DLBCL, we conducted a prospective cohort study on 62 patients diagnosed with DLBCL. A total of 11 patients (17.7%) developed VTE. The concentrations of platelet-derived EVs (PEVs), E-selectin+ EVs, P-selectin+ EVs, tissue factor (TF)-positive/CD20+ EVs, TF−/CD19+ EVs, TF−/CD45+ EVs, and TF−/CD20+ EVs were significantly higher in DLBCL patients compared to healthy controls. In contrast, the concentration of TF− PEVs was significantly lower in DLBCL patients compared to healthy controls. No statistically significant differences were observed in the concentrations of the EV profiles among the DLBCL patients with and without VTE. Using Cox regression analysis, we found that none of the observed EV populations demonstrated an association with overall survival (OS). In conclusion, patients with DLBCL have elevated concentrations of distinct EV populations—in particular, PEVs, E-selectin EVs, P-selectin EVs, TF+/CD20+ EVs, and TF− DLBCL/B-cell EVs (CD19, CD20, CD45)—compared to healthy controls. DLBCL patients exhibit a specific EV profile, which is not significantly related to the risk of VTE and OS outcomes. Our data provide an intriguing insight into EV profiles in patients with DLBCL. Bovine pestiviruses, namely bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and HoBi-like pestiviruses (HoBiPevs), are endemic viruses in Latin America, and the disease causes significant losses in the agricultural sector. The present review aims to perform a systematic assessment and meta-analysis of the prevalence of bovine pestiviruses in Latin America and their risk factors. Notable heterogeneity was observed in the analyzed groups, with significant prevalence variations based on age and country. However, no differences were found between temporal trends, production systems, or models. Identified risk factors included age, breed, location, reproductive practices, animal purchase, farm management, and biosecurity measures. This systematic review and meta-analysis of BVDV in Latin America provides critical insights to inform decision-making and strategic actions for disease control in the region. The high serological prevalence of bovine pestivirus across Latin America underscores the urgent need for standardized surveillance programs, biosecurity reinforcement, and targeted vaccination strategies. The presence of HoBiPev further complicates current diagnostic and control measures. Future research should focus on disease transmission dynamics, economic impact assessments, and the effectiveness of intervention programs tailored to the region’s diverse livestock production systems.
