This study aimed to evaluate solid-state fermentation (SSF) as a sustainable approach for the simultaneous detoxification of olive pomace (OP) and the production of industrially relevant enzymes. OP, a semisolid byproduct of olive oil extraction, is rich in lignocellulose and phenolic compounds, which limit its direct reuse due to phytotoxicity. A native strain of Aspergillus sp., isolated from OP, was employed as the biological agent, while grape pomace (GP) was added as a co-substrate to enhance substrate structure. Fermentations were conducted at two scales, Petri dishes (20 g) and a fixed-bed bioreactor (FBR, 2 kg), under controlled conditions (25 °C, 7 days). Key parameters monitored included dry and wet weight loss, pH, color, phenolic content, and enzymatic activity. Significant reductions in color and polyphenol content were achieved, reaching 68% in Petri dishes and 88.1% in the FBR, respectively. In the FBR, simultaneous monitoring of dry and wet weight loss enabled the estimation of fungal biotransformation, revealing a hysteresis phenomenon not previously reported in SSF studies. Enzymes such as xylanase, endopolygalacturonase, cellulase, and tannase exhibited peak activities between 150 and 180 h, with maximum values of 424.6 U·g−1, 153.6 U·g−1, 67.43 U·g−1, and 6.72 U·g−1, respectively. The experimental data for weight loss, enzyme production, and phenolic reduction were accurately described by logistic and first-order models. These findings demonstrate the high metabolic efficiency of the fungal isolate under SSF conditions and support the feasibility of scaling up this process. The proposed strategy offers a low-cost and sustainable solution for OP valorization, aligning with circular economy principles by transforming agro-industrial residues into valuable bioproducts. Ruminant livestock production plays a crucial role in the agricultural systems of Sub-Saharan Africa, significantly supporting rural livelihoods through income generation, improved nutrition, and employment opportunities. Despite its importance, the sector continues to face substantial challenges, such as low feed quality, seasonal feed shortages, and climate-related stresses, all of which limit productivity and sustainability. Considering these challenges, the adoption of natural feed additives has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance animal performance, optimise nutrient utilisation, and mitigate environmental impacts, including the reduction of enteric methane emissions. This review underscores the significant potential of natural feed additives such as plant extracts, essential oils, probiotics, and mineral-based supplements such as fossil shell flour as sustainable alternatives to conventional growth promoters in ruminant production systems across the region. All available documented evidence on the topic from 2000 to 2024 was collated and synthesised through standardised methods of systematic review protocol—PRISMA. Out of 319 research papers downloaded, six were included and analysed directly or indirectly in this study. The results show that the addition of feed additives to ruminant diets in all the studies reviewed significantly (p < 0.05) improved growth parameters such as average daily growth (ADG), feed intake, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the control group. However, no significant (p > 0.05) effect was found on cold carcass weight (CCW), meat percentage, fat percentage, bone percentage, or intramuscular fat (IMF%) compared to the control. The available evidence indicates that these additives can provide tangible benefits, including improved growth performance, better feed efficiency, enhanced immune responses, and superior meat quality, while also supporting environmental sustainability by reducing nitrogen excretion and decreasing dependence on antimicrobial agents. This study proposes an improved YOLO11n-seg instance segmentation model to address the limitations of existing models in accurately identifying mature blueberries in complex greenhouse environments. Current methods often lack sufficient accuracy when dealing with complex scenarios, such as fruit occlusion, lighting variations, and target overlap. To overcome these challenges, we developed a novel approach that integrates a Spatial–Channel Adaptive (SCA) attention mechanism and a Dual Attention Balancing (DAB) module. The SCA mechanism dynamically adjusts the receptive field through deformable convolutions and fuses multi-scale color features. This enhances the model’s ability to recognize occluded targets and improves its adaptability to variations in lighting. The DAB module combines channel–spatial attention and structural reparameterization techniques. This optimizes the YOLO11n structure and effectively suppresses background interference. Consequently, the model’s accuracy in recognizing fruit contours improves. Additionally, we introduce Normalized Wasserstein Distance (NWD) to replace the traditional intersection over union (IoU) metric and address bias issues that arise in dense small object matching. Experimental results demonstrate that the improved model significantly improves target detection accuracy, recall rate, and mAP@0.5, achieving increases of 1.8%, 1.5%, and 0.5%, respectively, over the baseline model. On our self-built greenhouse blueberry dataset, the mask segmentation accuracy, recall rate, and mAP@0.5 increased by 0.8%, 1.2%, and 0.1%, respectively. In tests across six complex scenarios, the improved model demonstrated greater robustness than mainstream models such as YOLOv8n-seg, YOLOv8n-seg-p6, and YOLOv9c-seg, especially in scenes with dense occlusions. The improvement in mAP@0.5 and F1 scores validates the effectiveness of combining attention mechanisms and multiple metric optimizations, for instance, segmentation tasks in complex agricultural scenes. Female cancers such as breast and gynaecological cancers contribute to a significant global health burden and are a leading cause of fatality among women. With current treatment options often limited by resistance to cytotoxic drugs, side effects and lack of specificity to the cancer, there is a pressing need for alternative treatments. Recent research has highlighted the promising role of non-coding RNAs (ncRNA) in regulating these issues and providing more targeted approaches to suppressing key cancer pathways. This review explores the involvement of the various types of non-coding RNAs in regulating key oncogenic pathways, namely, the MAPK, PI3K/Akt/mTOR, Wnt/β-catenin and p53 pathways, in a range of female cancers such as breast, cervical, ovarian and endometrial cancers. Evidence from a multitude of studies suggests that non-coding RNAs function as double-edged swords, serving as both oncogenes and tumour suppressors, depending on their expression and cellular interactions. By mapping and investigating these regulatory interactions, this review demonstrates the complexity and dual functionality of ncRNAs in cancer. Understanding these complex mechanisms is essential for the development of new and effective ncRNA-based diagnostic methods and targeted therapies in female cancer treatment. Full article

Biothiols, including cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (Hcy), and glutathione (GSH), are crucial for physiological regulation and their imbalance poses severe health risks. Herein, we developed a pH-responsive liquid crystal (LC)-based sensing platform for detection of biothiols by doping 4-n-pentylbiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (PBA) into 4-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB). Urease catalyzed urea hydrolysis to produce OH, triggering the deprotonation of PBA, thereby inducing a vertical alignment of LC molecules at the interface corresponding to dark optical appearances. Heavy metal ions (e.g., Hg2+) could inhibit urease activity, under which condition LC presents bright optical images and LC molecules maintain a state of tilted arrangement. However, biothiols competitively bind to Hg2+, the activity of urease is maintained which enables the occurrence of urea hydrolysis. This case triggers LC molecules to align in a vertical orientation, resulting in bright optical images. This pH-driven reorientation of LCs provides a visual readout (bright-to-dark transition) correlated with biothiol concentration. The detection limits of Cys/Hcy and GSH for the PBA-doped LC platform are 0.1 μM and 0.5 μM, respectively. Overall, this study provides a simple, label-free and low-cost strategy that has a broad application prospect for the detection of biothiols. Full article

Bifidobacterium adolescentis is prevalent in the gastrointestinal tract of healthy humans, and significantly influences host health. Recent studies have predominantly investigated the probiotic characteristics of individual strains and their specific metabolic roles, whereas analyses at the population genome level have been limited to date. This study conducted a comparative genomics analysis of 543 B. adolescentis genomes to explore genetic background variations and functional gene differences across geographically diverse populations. The results revealed significant differences in genome size and GC content among populations from Asia, Europe, and North America (p < 0.05). The pan-gene exhibited an open structure, reflecting the substantial genetic diversity within B. adolescentis. Functional annotation demonstrated that B. adolescentis possesses numerous protein-coding genes and abundant carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZys) implicated in carbohydrate degradation and transformation. Population-specific CAZys were identified, suggesting adaptive evolution driven by distinct regional dietary patterns. Full article

Mineralogical and Geochemical Features of Soil Developed on Rhyolites in the Dry Tropical Area of Cameroon

Petrological knowledge on weathering processes controlling the mobility of chemical elements is still limited in the dry tropical zone of Cameroon. This study aims to investigate the mobility of major and trace elements during rhyolite weathering and soil formation in Mobono by understanding the mineralogical and elemental vertical variation. The studied soil was classified as Cambisols containing mainly quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, smectite, kaolinite, illite, calcite, lepidocrocite, goethite, sepiolite, and interstratified clay minerals. pH values ranging between 6.11 and 8.77 indicated that hydrolysis, superimposed on oxidation and carbonation, is the main process responsible for the formation of secondary minerals, leading to the formation of iron oxides and calcite. The bedrock was mainly constituted of SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O, Fe2O3, Ba, Zr, Sr, Y, Ga, and Rb. Ce and Eu anomalies, and chondrite-normalized La/Yb ratios were 0.98, 0.67, and 2.86, respectively. SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Na2O, and K2O were major elements in soil horizons. Trace elements revealed high levels of Ba (385 to 1320 mg kg−1), Zr (158 to 429 mg kg−1), Zn (61 to 151 mg kg−1), Sr (62 to 243 mg kg−1), Y (55 to 81 mg kg−1), Rb (1102 to 58 mg kg−1), and Ga (17.70 to 35 mg kg−1). LREEs were more abundant than HREEs, with LREE/HREE ratio ranging between 2.60 and 6.24. Ce and Eu anomalies ranged from 1.08 to 1.21 and 0.58 to 1.24 respectively. The rhyolite-normalized La/Yb ratios varied between 0.56 and 0.96. Mass balance revealed the depletion of Si, Ca, Na, Mn, Sr, Ta, W, U, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd and Lu, and the accumulation of Al, Fe, K, Mg, P, Sc, V, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, Rb, Y, Zr, Nb, Cs, Ba, Hf, Pb, Th, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Yb during weathering along the soil profile. Non-Invasive Prediction of Atrial Fibrosis Using a Regression Tree Model of Mean Left Atrial Voltage

Background: Atrial fibrosis is a key contributor to atrial cardiomyopathy and can be assessed invasively using mean left atrial voltage (MLAV) from electroanatomical mapping. However, the invasive nature of this procedure limits its clinical applicability. Machine learning (ML), particularly regression tree-based models, may offer a non-invasive approach for predicting MLAV using clinical and echocardiographic data, improving non-invasive atrial fibrosis characterisation beyond current dichotomous classifications. Methods: We prospectively included and followed 113 patients with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) undergoing pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) with ultra-high-density voltage mapping (uHDvM), from whom MLAV was estimated. Standardised two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography was performed before ablation, and clinical and echocardiographic variables were analysed. A regression tree model was constructed using the Classification and Regression Trees—CART-algorithm to identify key predictors of MLAV. Results: The regression tree model exhibited moderate predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.63; 95% CI: 0.55–0.71; root mean squared error = 0.90; 95% CI: 0.82–0.98), with indexed minimum LA volume and passive emptying fraction emerging as the most influential variables. No significant differences in AF recurrence-free survival were found among MLAV tertiles or model-based generated groups (log-rank p = 0.319 and p = 0.126, respectively). Conclusions: We present a novel ML-based regression tree model for non-invasive prediction of MLAV, identifying minimum LA volume and passive emptying fraction as the most significant predictors. This model offers an accessible, non-invasive tool for refining atrial cardiomyopathy characterisation by reflecting the fibrotic substrate as a continuum, a crucial advancement over existing dichotomous approaches to guide tailored therapeutic strategies. Agronomical Responses of Elite Winter Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Varieties in Phenotyping Experiments Under Continuous Water Withdrawal and Optimal Water Management in Greenhouses

Drought stress is a major environmental constraint that significantly reduces wheat productivity worldwide. In this study, seventeen wheat genotypes were evaluated under well-watered and drought-stressed conditions across two consecutive years (2023–2024) in a controlled greenhouse experiment. Twenty morphological and agronomic traits were recorded, and their responses to prolonged water limitation were assessed using multivariate statistical methods, including three-way ANOVA, principal component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis. Drought stress significantly decreased all traits except the harvest index (HI), with the most severe reductions observed in traits related to secondary spikes (e.g., grain weight reduced by 95%). The ANOVA results confirmed significant genotype × treatment (G × T) interactions for key agronomic traits, with the strongest effect observed for total grain weight (F = 7064.30, p < 0.001). A PCA reduced the 20 original variables to five principal components, explaining 87.2% of the total variance. These components reflected distinct trait groups associated with productivity, spike architecture, and development in phenology. Cluster analysis based on PCA scores grouped genotypes into three clusters with contrasting drought response profiles. A yield-based evaluation confirmed the cluster structure, distinguishing genotypes with a stable performance (average yield loss ~58%) from highly sensitive ones (~70% loss). Overall, the findings demonstrate that drought tolerance in wheat is governed by complex trait interactions. Integrating a trait-based multivariate analysis with a yield stability assessment enables the identification of genotypes with superior adaptation to water-limited environments, providing an excellent genotype background for future breeding efforts. Analysis of Calcaneal Fracture-Related Complications—A Retrospective Chart Review

Background/Objectives: The calcaneus is the most commonly injured tarsal bone, potentially resulting in long-term functional deficiencies and disability. The type of treatment mainly depends on fracture type and morphology. Treatment of these fractures can be challenging due to a limited soft tissue envelope and is frequently associated with complications. The aim of this study was to classify fracture types and identify factors associated with in-hospital complications. Methods: Patients with calcaneal fractures treated at our level I trauma center between 1997 and 2017 were included. Demographic data, comorbidities, fracture characteristics, type of treatment, complications and revisions, compliance and accompanying injuries were evaluated. Results: A total of 238 patients (m = 163, f = 75) at a mean age of 40 years sustaining either uni- or bilateral calcaneal fracture resulting in a total of 288 calcaneal fractures. Concomitant injuries were present in 103 patients (35.9%). Traumatic spine lesions were present in 21.9%. Complications were recorded in 59 fractures (20.5%). Open fractures were more likely to develop complications (76.0% vs. 15.2%, p < 0.001). Significant complication (33% vs. 14%, p < 0.001) and wound complication rates (29% vs. 10%, p < 0.001) were found in multiple-injured patients. All open fractures were surgically treated on the day of admission. In calcaneal fractures with a Böhler angle below 0 degrees, more complications were seen (33% vs. 17%, p < 0.05). Conclusions: High complication rates following calcaneal fractures were detected, with an increased likelihood in open fractures and in patients with multiple injuries. A negative Böhler angle was associated with worse outcomes. Full article

Background: Catheter ablation of the arrhythmogenic substrate has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy for symptomatic Brugada syndrome (BrS). However, high-quality comparative evidence against conventional implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)-based management remains limited. Objectives: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of catheter ablation in reducing ventricular fibrillation (VF) recurrence in symptomatic BrS compared to standard therapy. Methods: Medline, Cochrane Library, and Scopus were systematically searched through 1 June 2025. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were independently conducted by three reviewers. Random-effects meta-analyses were used to pool risk estimates. Results: Three studies (two randomized controlled trials, one observational cohort; 130 symptomatic BrS patients) were included. Over a median follow-up of 3.9 years, catheter ablation was associated with a significantly lower risk of VF recurrence compared to standard therapy [risk ratio (RR) = 0.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) = (0.06, 0.60); I2 = 36%, p for heterogeneity = 0.21], with no deaths reported in any group. A sensitivity analysis restricted to randomized trials confirmed similar findings in favor of ablation. Conclusions: Catheter ablation was associated with reduced VF recurrence compared to ICD therapy alone, supporting its potential role as first-line treatment in symptomatic BrS or as an alternative for patients who decline ICD implantation. Purpose: To effectively reduce cancer burden, genetic testing programs should identify high-risk individuals prior to cancer development, when risk-reduction strategies can be implemented. We evaluated trends in BRCA1/BRCA2 testing use after implementation of a publicly funded testing program. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, near population-based study of women who underwent BRCA1/BRCA2 testing in Ontario, Canada, (2007–2016) (n = 15,986). Temporal trends were evaluated using linear and Poisson regression. Results: Although annual utilization of testing increased over time (p < 0.001), mean age at testing increased from 49.9 years (SD 13.8) in 2007 to 53.8 years (SD 13.7) in 2016 (p < 0.001). The proportion of women with a cancer history at testing also increased from 53.5% in 2007 to 66.3% in 2015 (p < 0.001); the proportion of women free from breast cancer did not change significantly (49.2% in 2007 versus 45.1% in 2015, p = 0.90). As a proportion of all tested, those with breast cancer tested within 3 months of diagnosis increased over time (0.39% of tests in 2007 versus 13.6% of tests in 2015; p < 0.001). Conclusions: While the institution of a publicly funded genetic testing program was associated with rising utilization, increasing age at testing and decreasing testing of unaffected women suggest limitations in identifying high-risk individuals eligible for risk-reduction. Background/Objectives: Frailty is a prevalent geriatric syndrome associated with impaired postural control and elevated fall risk. Although conventional exercise is a core strategy for frailty management, adherence remains limited. Virtual reality (VR)-based interventions have emerged as potentially engaging alternatives, but their effects on objective postural control and task-specific confidence in frail populations remain understudied. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a supervised VR training program using the Nintendo Ring Fit Plus™ on postural control, functional mobility, and balance confidence among frail community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Fifty-one adults aged ≥65 years classified as frail or prefrail were enrolled in a four-week trial. Participants were assigned to either a VR intervention group (n = 28) or control group (n = 23). Participants were non-randomly assigned based on availability and preference. Outcome measures were collected at baseline and post-intervention. Primary outcomes included center of pressure (CoP) metrics—sway area, mean velocity, and sway path. Secondary outcomes were the Timed Up and Go (TUG), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC), and Falls Efficacy Scale–International (FES-I). Results: After adjusting for baseline values, age, and BMI, the intervention group showed significantly greater improvements than the control group across all postural control outcomes. Notably, reductions in sway area, mean velocity, and sway path were observed under both eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions, with effect sizes ranging from moderate to very large (Cohen’s d = 0.57 to 1.61). For secondary outcomes, significant between-group differences were found in functional mobility (TUG), balance performance (BBS), and balance confidence (ABC), with moderate-to-large effect sizes (Cohen’s d = 0.53 to 0.73). However, no significant improvement was observed in fear of falling (FES-I), despite a small-to-moderate effect size. Conclusions: A supervised VR program significantly enhanced postural control, mobility, and task-specific balance confidence in frail older adults. These findings support the feasibility and efficacy of VR-based training as a scalable strategy for mitigating frailty-related mobility impairments. Full article

Optimized Ribonucleoprotein Complexes Enhance Prime Editing Efficiency in Zebrafish

Prime editing (PE) has emerged as a transformative genome editing technology, enabling precise base substitutions, insertions, and deletions without inducing double-strand DNA breaks (DSBs). However, its application in zebrafish remains limited by low efficiency. Here, we leveraged PE7, a state-of-the-art PE system, combined with La-accessible prime editing guide RNAs (pegRNAs), to enhance editing efficiency in zebrafish. By co-incubating PE7 protein with La-accessible pegRNAs to form ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes and microinjecting these complexes into zebrafish embryos, we achieved up to 15.99% editing efficiency at target loci—an improvement of 6.81- to 11.46-fold over PE2. Additionally, we observed 16.60% 6 bp insertions and 13.18% 10 bp deletions at the adgrf3b locus, representing a 3.13-fold increase over PE2. Finally, we used PE to introduce desired edits at the tyr locus, successfully generating zebrafish with the tyr P302L mutation that exhibited melanin reduction. These findings demonstrate that PE7 significantly enhances prime editing efficiency in fish, providing novel tools for functional gene studies and genetic breeding in aquatic species. Full article

Proximate Composition, Physicochemical Properties and Concentration of Selected Minerals in Edible Giblets of Geese

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of breed and sex (3 × 2) on the basic chemical composition, concentration of some minerals, and physicochemical properties of edible giblets of farm geese. The study material consisted of edible giblets (livers, gizzards, hearts) obtained from 42 geese from three Polish native breeds (Rypin, Suwałki, Kartuzy) at 220 weeks of age. Edible giblets were obtained during goose evisceration from seven males and seven females of each breed. Each bird was an experimental unit. Goose breed and sex had a significant effect on the chemical composition and physicochemical properties of the edible giblets. Rypin geese had higher (p < 0.05) intramuscular fat content in the gizzard and heart, as well as higher protein content in the heart and lower water content in the gizzard, compared to Kartuzy and Suwałki geese. Kartuzy geese, in turn, had higher content of water in the heart, and higher concentrations of phosphorus, calcium, iron, manganese, sodium, and chromium in the liver, compared to Rypin and Suwałki geese. In turn, Suwałki geese had higher concentrations of phosphorus in the gizzard, and potassium, phosphorus, copper, and iron in the heart compared to the hearts of Rypin and Suwałki geese, while Kartuzy and Suwałki geese higher concentrations of sodium, magnesium, zinc, and manganese in hearts than the hearts of Rypin geese. In these studies, the highest lightness (L*) was observed in the liver and heart of Rypin geese, the lowest yellowness (b*) was observed in the gizzard of Suwałki geese, and the highest pH24 and EC24 were observed in the heart of Kartuzy geese. Regardless of breed, males had higher protein, collagen, and intramuscular fat contents in the heart, a higher water content in the gizzard, higher concentrations of potassium, and sodium in the liver and gizzard, copper in the heart and liver, and phosphorus in the gizzard, and less water in the heart and zinc in the liver, as well as higher (p < 0.05) concentrations of iron in the liver and heart compared with females. The breed by sex interaction was significant for intramuscular fat and water content in the gizzard and heart, and protein content in the heart. Significant differences were also noted for EC24 in the liver and heart, yellowness of the gizzard, and concentrations of most labeled minerals in edible giblets. The obtained results indicate that the nutritional value and suitability of edible goose giblets for the poultry industry vary depending on breed and sex. Due to the limited research on the chemical composition and physicochemical properties of goose giblets, further research in this area is necessary in the future. Full article
