The detection of trace chemicals at low and ultra-low concentrations is critical for applications in environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, food safety and other fields. Conventional detection techniques often lack the required sensitivity, specificity, or cost-effectiveness, making real-time, in situ analysis challenging. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful analytical tool, offering improved sensitivity through the enhancement of Raman scattering by plasmonic nanostructures. While noble metals such as Ag and Au are currently the reference choices for SERS substrates, fabrication methods should balance enhancement efficiency, reproducibility and scalability. In this study, we propose a novel approach for SERS substrate fabrication using reactive Aerosol Jet Printing (r-AJP) as an innovative additive manufacturing technique. The r-AJP process enables in-flight Ag seed reduction and nucleation of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) by mixing silver nitrate and ascorbic acid aerosols before deposition, as suggested by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The resulting coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses, revealing the formation of nanoporous crystalline Ag agglomerates partially covered by residual matter. The as-prepared SERS substrates exhibited remarkable SERS activity, demonstrating a high enhancement factor (106) for rhodamine (R6G) detection. Our findings highlight the potential of r-AJP as a scalable and cost-effective fabrication strategy for next-generation SERS sensors, paving the way for the development of a new additive manufacturing tool for noble metal material deposition. Difficult, extreme operating conditions of parabolic antennas under precipitation and sub-zero temperatures require the creation of effective heating systems. The purpose of the research is to develop a multilayer coating containing two metal-ceramic layers, epoxy composite layers, carbon fabric, and an outer layer of basalt fabric, which allows for effective heating of the antenna, and to study the properties of this coating. The multilayer coating was formed on an aluminum base that was subjected to abrasive jet processing. The first and second metal-ceramic layers, Al2O3 + 5% Al, which were applied by high-speed multi-chamber cumulative detonation spraying (CDS), respectively, provide maximum adhesion strength to the aluminum base and high adhesion strength to the third layer of the epoxy composite containing Al2O3. On this not-yet-polymerized layer of epoxy composite containing Al2O3, a layer of carbon fabric (impregnated with epoxy resin) was formed, which serves as a resistive heating element. On top of this carbon fabric, a layer of epoxy composite containing Cr2O3 and SiO2 was applied. Next, basalt fabric was applied to this still-not-yet-polymerized layer. Then, the resulting layered coating was compacted and dried. To study this multilayer coating, X-ray analysis, light and raster scanning microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used. The thickness of the coating layers and microhardness were measured on transverse microsections. The adhesion strength of the metal-ceramic coating layers to the aluminum base was determined by both bending testing and peeling using the adhesive method. It was established that CDS provides the formation of metal-ceramic layers with a maximum fraction of lamellae and a microhardness of 7900–10,520 MPa. In these metal-ceramic layers, a dispersed subgrain structure, a uniform distribution of nanoparticles, and a gradient-free level of dislocation density are observed. Such a structure prevents the formation of local concentrators of internal stresses, thereby increasing the level of dispersion and substructural strengthening of the metal-ceramic layers’ material. The formation of materials with a nanostructure increases their strength and crack resistance. The effectiveness of using aluminum, chromium, and silicon oxides as nanofillers in epoxy composite layers was demonstrated. The presence of structures near the surface of these nanofillers, which differ from the properties of the epoxy matrix in the coating, was established. Such zones, specifically the outer surface layers (OSL), significantly affect the properties of the epoxy composite. The results of industrial tests showed the high performance of the multilayer coating during antenna heating. Full article

To improve environmental sustainability and operational safety in maritime industries, the development of efficient methods for removing biofouling from submerged surfaces is critical. This study investigates the erosion mechanisms of cavitation jets as a non-contact, high-efficiency method for detaching marine organisms, including bacteria and larvae, from ship hulls and underwater infrastructure. Through erosion experiments on coated specimens, variations in jet morphology, and flow visualization using the Schlieren method, we examined how factors such as jet incident angle and nozzle configuration influence removal performance. The results reveal that erosion occurs not only at the direct jet impact zone but also in regions where cavitation bubbles exhibit intense motion, driven by pressure fluctuations and shock waves. Notably, single-hole jets with longer potential cores produced more concentrated erosion, while multi-jet interference enhanced bubble activity. These findings underscore the importance of understanding bubble distribution dynamics in the flow field and provide insight into optimizing cavitation jet configurations to expand the effective cleaning area while minimizing material damage. This study contributes to advancing biofouling removal technologies that promote safer and more sustainable maritime operations. Full article

In engineering practice, liquid droplet impingement typically occurs at an oblique angle relative to the target surface, yet the influence of impact orientation on damage outcomes remains contentious and exhibits target-material dependency. In this paper, a typical single-waterjet-generating technique is applied to liquid impact tests on a unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate, with special focus on the effects of the impingement angle and the fiber orientation. Finite-element simulation is employed to help reveal the failure mechanism of oblique impacts. The results show that, in most cases, the damage caused by a 15° oblique impact is slightly larger than that of a normal impact, while the increase amplitude varies with different impact speeds. Resin removal is more prone to occur when the projection of the waterjet velocity on the impact surface is perpendicular (marked as the fiber orientation PE) rather than parallel (marked as the fiber orientation PA) to the fiber direction of the top layer. A PE fiber orientation can lead to mass material peeling in comparison with PA, and the damage range is even much larger than for a normal impact. The underlying mechanism can be attributed to the increased lateral jet-particle velocity and resultant shear stress along the impact projection direction. The distinct damage modes observed on the CFRP laminate with the different fiber orientations PE and PA originate from the asymmetric tensile properties in the longitudinal/transverse directions of laminates coupled with dissimilar fiber–matrix interfacial characteristics. A theoretical model for the surface damage area under a single-jet impact was established through experimental data fitting based on a modified water-hammer pressure contact-radius formulation. The model quantitatively characterizes the influence of critical parameters, including the jet velocity, diameter, and impact angle, on the central area of the surface failure ring. Full article

Twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels represent a significant development in automotive steel production, characterized by advanced strength and ductility properties. The present study empirically investigated the effects of process parameters on the cutting process and surface quality of TWIP980 steel sheet by abrasive water jet (AWJ) cutting. The cutting experiments were conducted on 1.4 mm thick sheet metal using four different traverse speeds (50, 100, 200, and 400 mm/min) and four different water jet pressures (1500, 2000, 2500, and 3000 bar). Two different abrasive flow rates (300 and 600 g/min) were also utilized. The cut surfaces were characterized in three dimensions with an optical profilometer. The parameters of surface roughness, kerf width, taper angle, and material removal rate (MRR) were determined. Furthermore, microhardness measurements were conducted on the cut surfaces. The optimal surface quality and geometrical accuracy were achieved by applying a combination of parameters, including 3000 bar of pressure, a traverse rate of 400 mm/min, and an abrasive flow rate of 600 g/min. Concurrently, an effective cutting performance with increased MRR and reduced taper angles was achieved under these conditions. The observed increase in microhardness with increasing pressure is attributable to a hardening effect resulting from local plastic deformation. Full article

This study examines the capabilities and optimisation of electrochemical jet machining (ECJM), a component of the electrochemical machining (ECM) production chain. A localised electrolyte jet helps remove material from selective areas; it is a suitable process for contoured parts and hard-to-machine material without inflicting thermal or mechanical stresses. In this regard, the study incorporates details of an experimental layout and variation in parameters in terms of voltage, electrolyte concentration, and jet velocity. The most striking findings indicate that the material removal rate and surface quality are susceptible to parameters such as applied voltage and stand-off distance, and electrolyte concentration and jet velocity (via electrolyte supply rate) fixed. Higher voltages and fixed electrolyte concentrations give higher removal rates, though this might impair the surface finish, thereby requiring a trade-off at best. These results provide insights into optimising process parameters for enhanced precision and efficiency in ECJM. Future research could focus on advanced electrolytes and improving scalability for industrial applications. Full article

The erosion resistance of materials against solid particles is a very important property, especially in the transportation of powders or in aeronautics (dust inside jet engines). There is a strong need to introduce new materials that have higher solid particle erosion resistance than state-of-the-art materials. Thus, in the present work, the solid erosion particles of high entropy alloys (HEAs) based on the Al0.7CoCrFeNi matrix were studied compared to the state-of-the-art stainless steel AISI 304. Furthermore, the effect of the addition of Ti to HEAs on hardness and erosion resistance was investigated. Current research included the development of the chemical composition of a new kind of HEA designed on the basis of thermodynamical calculations performed in CALPHAD, its manufacturing, full characterization involving microstructural and phase analyses, hardness measurements, solid particle erosion tests, and finally, the elucidation of erosion mechanisms. It was found that HEAs showed higher hardness as well as erosion resistance than AISI 304. Moreover, it was found that the increase in Ti content in an HEA resulted in an increase in the hardness and resistance to the erosion of the studied HEA. As the main reason for this phenomenon, the stabilization of the β-BCC phase, suppression of the α-FCC phase, and the appearance of the Ni3Ti phase in the studied HEA were claimed. Full article

The research and development of the next generation of supersonic transports (SSTs) meets economic and environmental problems. An SST encounters critical challenges, including the need for low fuel consumption, low noise, and low gas emissions. Currently, the feasibility of developing SSTs is increasing through the application of cutting-edge technologies, such as composite materials, advanced electric systems, sustainable aviation fuel, and innovative design methodologies. The object of this study was to perform the conceptual design of a 50-seat supersonic transport utilizing general conceptual design methods. In estimating weight and flight performance, statistical formulae were correlated with data from civil supersonic and subsonic jet transports. For wing sizing, carpet plots were created to explore the optimal combination of wing aspect ratio and wing loading. The results suggested that by utilizing advanced technologies, such as the use of a composite material for the structure, the maximum takeoff weight can potentially be reduced while still meeting design requirements. The constraint of climb gradient largely affects the maximum takeoff weight, and it is anticipated that flight performance at low speeds will be improved. Full article

One of the key challenges in commercializing proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer technology is reducing the production costs while maintaining high efficiency and operational stability. Significant contributors to the overall cost of the device are the electrode catalysts with IrO2 and Pt/C. Due to the high cost and limited availability of noble metals, there is growing interest in developing alternative, low-cost catalytic materials. In recent years, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs), such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and rhenium disulfide (ReS2), have attracted considerable attention due to their promising electrochemical properties for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). These materials exhibit unique properties, such as a high surface area or catalytic activity localized at the edges of the layered structure, which can be further enhanced through defect engineering or phase modulation. To increase the catalytically active surface area, the investigated materials were deposited on a carbon-based support—Vulcan XC-72R—selected for its high electrical conductivity and large specific surface area. This study investigated the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of six catalyst samples with varying MoS2 and ReS2 to carbon support ratios. Among the composites analyzed, the best sample on MoS2 (containing the most carbon soot) and the best sample on ReS2 (containing the least carbon soot) were selected. These were then used as cathode catalysts in an experimental PEM electrolyzer setup. The results confirmed satisfactory catalytic activity of the tested materials, indicating their potential as alternatives to conventional noble metal-based catalysts and providing a foundation for further research in this area. Three-dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as a transformative technology in dental splint fabrication, offering significant advancements in customization, production speed, material efficiency, and patient comfort. This comprehensive review synthesizes the current literature on the clinical use, benefits, limitations, and future directions of 3D-printed dental splints across various disciplines, including prosthodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery, and restorative dentistry. Key 3D printing technologies such as stereolithography (SLA), digital light processing (DLP), and material jetting are discussed, along with the properties of contemporary photopolymer resins used in splint fabrication. Evidence indicates that while 3D-printed splints generally meet ISO standards for flexural strength and wear resistance, their mechanical properties are often 15–30% lower than those of heat-cured PMMA in head-to-head tests (flexural strength range 50–100 MPa vs. PMMA 100–130 MPa), and study-to-study variability is high. Some reports even show significantly reduced hardness and fatigue resistance in certain resins, underscoring material-specific heterogeneity. Clinical applications reviewed include occlusal stabilization for bruxism and temporomandibular disorders, surgical wafers for orthognathic procedures, orthodontic retainers, and endodontic guides. While current limitations include material aging, post-processing complexity, and variability in long-term outcomes, ongoing innovations—such as flexible resins, multi-material printing, and AI-driven design—hold promise for broader adoption. The review concludes with evidence-based clinical recommendations and identifies critical research gaps, particularly regarding long-term durability, pediatric applications, and quality control standards. This review supports the growing role of 3D printing as an efficient and versatile tool for delivering high-quality splint therapy in modern dental practice. Full article

The enduring manufacturing goals are increasingly shifting toward ultra-precision manufacturing and micro-nano fabrication, driven by the demand for sophisticated products. Unconventional machining processes such as electrochemical jet machining (ECJM), electrical discharge machining (EDM), electrochemical machining (ECM), abrasive water jet machining (AWJM), and laser beam machining (LBM) have been widely adopted as feasible alternatives to traditional methods, enabling the production of high-quality engineering components with specific characteristics. ECJM, a non-contact machining technology, employs electrodes on the nozzle and workpiece to establish an electrical circuit via the jet. As a prominent special machining technology, ECJM has demonstrated significant advantages, such as rapid, non-thermal, and stress-free machining capabilities, in past research. This review is dedicated to outline the research progress of ECJM, focusing on its fundamental concepts, material processing capabilities, technological advancements, and its variants (e.g., ultrasonic-, laser-, abrasive-, and magnetism-assisted ECJM) along with their applications. Special attention is given to the application of ECJM in the semiconductor and biomedical fields, where the demand for ultra-precision components is most pronounced. Furthermore, this review explores recent innovations in process optimization, significantly boosting machining efficiency and quality. This review not only provides a snapshot of the current status of ECJM technology, but also discusses the current challenges and possible future improvements of the technology. Full article

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) antennas and antenna arrays have gained significant attention due to their pivotal role in emerging wireless communication, sensing, and imaging technologies. With the rapid deployment of 5G and the transition toward 6G networks, the demand for compact, high-gain, and reconfigurable mmWave antennas has intensified. This article highlights recent advancements in mmWave antenna technologies, including hybrid beamforming using phased arrays, dynamic beam-steering enabled by liquid crystal and MEMS-based structures, and high-capacity MIMO architectures. We also examine the integration of metamaterials and metasurfaces for miniaturization and gain enhancement. Applications covered include wearable antennas with low-SAR textile substrates, conformal antennas for UAV-based mmWave relays, and high-resolution radar arrays for autonomous vehicles. The study further analyzes innovative fabrication methods such as inkjet and aerosol jet printing, micromachining, and laser direct structuring, along with advanced materials like Kapton, PDMS, and graphene. Numerical modeling techniques such as full-wave EM simulation and machine learning-based optimization are discussed alongside experimental validation approaches. Beyond communications, we assess mmWave systems for biomedical imaging, security screening, and industrial sensing. Key challenges addressed include efficiency degradation at high frequencies, interference mitigation in dense environments, and system-level integration. Finally, future directions, including AI-driven design automation, intelligent reconfigurable surfaces, and integration with quantum and terahertz technologies, are outlined. This comprehensive synthesis aims to serve as a valuable reference for advancing next-generation mmWave antenna systems. Full article

This paper reports on a preliminary experimental study on binder jetting 3D printing of biomass–fungi composite materials. Biomass–fungi composite materials have potential applications in the packaging, furniture, and construction industries. Biomass particles (prepared from agricultural residues) act as the substrate of the composite materials. The filamentous roots of fungi intertwine and bind biomass particles together. In this study, the biomass (hemp hurd) powders used had two distinct average particle sizes. The liquid binder used contained fungi (Trametes versicolor) cells. T-shaped samples were printed using a lab-designed binder jetting setup. Printed samples were kept inside an incubator oven for four days to allow fungi to grow. Afterward, loose biomass powder was removed from the T-shaped samples. The samples were then kept inside the incubator oven for eight more days to allow further fungal growth. The samples were subsequently placed in an oven at 120 °C for four hours to terminate all fungal activity in the samples. SEM micrographs were taken of the cross-sectional surfaces of the samples. The micrographs showed a significant presence of fungi hyphae inside the printed samples, providing evidence of the binding of biomass particles by the hyphae. Full article

Waste to Biofuel: Process Design and Optimisation for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production from Corn Stover

Addressing the urgent need to decarbonise aviation and valorise agricultural waste, this paper investigates the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from corn stover. A preliminary evaluation based on a literature review indicates that among various conversion technologies, fast pyrolysis (FP) emerged as the most promising option, offering the highest fuel yield (22.5%) among various pathways, a competitive potential minimum fuel selling price (MFSP) of 1.78 USD/L, and significant greenhouse gas savings of up to 76%. Leveraging Aspen Plus simulation, SAF production via FP was rigorously designed and optimised, focusing on the heat integration strategy within the process to minimise utility consumption and ultimately the total cost. Consequently, the produced fuel exceeded the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) limit for the final boiling point, rendering it unsuitable as a standalone jet fuel. Nevertheless, it achieves regulatory compliance when blended at a rate of up to 10% with conventional jet fuel, marking a practical route for early adoption. Energy optimisation through pinch analysis integrated four hot–cold stream pairs, eliminating external heating, reducing cooling needs by 55%, and improving sustainability and efficiency. Economic analysis revealed that while heat integration slashed utility costs by 84%, the MFSP only decreased slightly from 2.35 USD/L to 2.29 USD/L due to unchanging material costs. Sensitivity analysis confirmed that hydrogen, catalyst, and feedstock pricing are the most influential variables, suggesting targeted reductions could push the MFSP below 2 USD/L. In summary, this work underscores the technical and economic viability of corn stover-derived SAF, providing a promising pathway for sustainable aviation and waste valorisation. While current limitations restrict fuel quality during full substitution, the results affirm the feasibility of SAF blending and present a scalable, low-carbon pathway for future development. Numerical Modeling on the Damage Behavior of Concrete Subjected to Abrasive Waterjet Cutting

Abrasive waterjet technology is a promising sustainable and green technology for cutting underground structures. Abrasive waterjet usage in demolition promotes sustainable and green construction practices by reduction of noise, dust, secondary waste, and disturbances to the surrounding infrastructure. In this study, a numerical framework based on a coupled Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH)–Finite Element Method (FEM) algorithm incorporating the Riedel–Hiermaier–Thoma (RHT) constitutive model is proposed to investigate the damage mechanism of concrete subjected to abrasive waterjet. Numerical simulation results show a stratified damage observation in the concrete, consisting of a crushing zone (plastic damage), crack formation zone (plastic and brittle damage), and crack propagation zone (brittle damage). Furthermore, concrete undergoes plastic failure when the shear stress on an element exceeds 5 MPa. Brittle failure due to tensile stress occurs only when both the maximum principal stress (σ1) and the minimum principal stress (σ3) are greater than zero at the same time. The damage degree (χ) of the concrete is observed to increase with jet diameter, concentration of abrasive particles, and velocity of jet. A series of orthogonal tests are performed to analyze the influence of velocity of jet, concentration of abrasive particles, and jet diameter on the damage degree and impact depth (h). The parametric numerical studies indicates that jet diameter has the most significant influence on damage degree, followed by abrasive concentration and jet velocity, respectively, whereas the primary determinant of impact depth is the abrasive concentration followed by jet velocity and jet diameter. Based on the parametric analysis, two optimized abrasive waterjet configurations are proposed: one tailored for rock fragmentation in tunnel boring machine (TBM) operations; and another for cutting reinforced concrete piles in shield tunneling applications. These configurations aim to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of excavation and tunneling processes through improved material removal performance and reduced mechanical wear. Full article
